Dr. Vogel is very nice and an awesome person to get to know. HOWEVER, her class is incredibly hard. Her tests are nothing like her power-points, and there's more physics than you would think for this course. Definitely not an "easy freshman class" like everyone says.
Reading quizzes on a book weekly, occasional quizzes over the text, quizzes are weighted heavy to help inflate grades. This lady is weird, lectures are boring, and when people don't understand her explanation, she says that "This is college, & u need to use your logic." She's really nice, just very smart & struggles teaching at an elementary level.
Here's the deal: I'm a business major having to take this class, which already sucks. Dr. Vogel is obviously very knowledgeable in her field, but she is so scatterbrained. There are weekly readings in a normal book that are not too bad, and we are quizzed on the chapter at the end of every week. Only 2 tests (1 normal and a final), & canvas quizzes
A lot of people don't like her but I honestly didn't mind her. I was annoyed by the random and confusing way she teaches but if you pay attention and you'll be fine. Her quizzes are worth a lot but also sucks if you forget one which is likely because they are randomly spaced and she gives no notice or warning. Do not get the textbook, its useless
Doctor Vogel is very knowledgeable in the field she teaches, and it shows through in brief intermissions in her lectures where she'll relay some recent events to the things being taught, which helps you better understand their significance. As someone who took the course as an elective, it never felt like a waste of time like some other courses.
She is a geology teacher. She is never wrong, so if you disagree with something she said, don't even bring it up. She is very nice, though, and loves to talk about geology. Also, we came from jello apparently.
I enjoyed this class and thought Dr. Vogel did a great job teaching it. She goes over a lot in her lectures, you can tell that she's a genius in her field. There are only 2 tests, but if you go to class and take time to learn the materially you will do fine. She expects you to work for your grade.
Dr. Vogel just isn't a good teacher. She was never clear on what would be on tests and would also dance around questions and would never give a definitive answer. It's geology so it's a super easy subject but if you can find a way around taking her, I highly recommend it.
Dr. Vogel is wonderful! I took Honors Sustainability my first semester here at Auburn and enjoyed the content so much that I'm now planning on minoring in sustainability. She does an excellent job of giving relevant examples and discussion is a great time to go into more depth about the interesting points of the lecture. Would absolutely recommend.
Overall Dr. Vogel is a great professor and a really nice person too. Most of the class is lectures but they are also on canvas to look over. The tests are easy and the bulk or your grades are in quizzes and the weekly reading questions on Fridays. The textbook isn't ever used but you will need the book for the weekly readings. Overall: not bad
Honors Sustainability. Dr. Vogel encourages you to put your best self forward and gives good feedback. She makes class discussions interesting and relevant. Class is challenging in a good way.
Just took my first test for this class... it sucked. My friends and I studied about 8 hours for it, made two different versions of the study guide she provided, felt prepared for the test because of our knowledge of the study guides, and still all borderline failed the test. I have never studied that long for anything to get that low of a grade.
If you are picking your science based on the lab, dont do any with her over it. She created the quizzes and finals which made up 60% of our grade and they were ridiculous. Typically never what was went over in lab or in the book. The TA that taught the class was really nice and fair, but the way she has her lab set up sucks big time. Avoid her
I liked Dr. Vogel. Very interesting and funny lady. Your grade is made up of 2 exams and a final, weekly readings from a book and online textbook quizzes. Her class is not hard but there is a lot to keep up with but she has extra credit opportunities
Dr. Vogel is is really sweet and genuinely cares about geology and her students. Attendance isnt required but it is taken once a week via an in class assignment. These assignments are only 2 points but end up being a hefty portion of your final grade. Dr. Vogel can be hard to follow sometimes and her slides are very hard to decipher on your own.
Shes clueless and all over the place. Doesnt know how to run a class at all. Never take her.
Very simple class. She truly loves the subject matter, and I feel bad that most of her students don't share the same enthusiasm, but she handles it well. Plenty of opportunities for grades and extra credit, so you have a fair chance to do well. She's great at explaining, though my own disinterest with geo made the class a little boring.
This class is a very simple, doable course! If you put in the time to do the work and watch the lectures, then you should be fine! This semester we had around 3 tests, a few quizzes, and a book club assignment every Friday (all of which were very doable). She is very understanding and willing to work with you! I really enjoyed taking her class!
I had a personal medical situation(related to the COVID-19 Pandemic) which every professor at Auburn was very accommodating toward, all except Dr. Vogel. She refused to help accomodate my medical situation, showing her lack of compassion for students. Do not take her if you can avoid it. Her approach as an educator was contrived and arrogant.
She seems nice enough and decently enthusiastic. The material, for me, was just all over the place and very unorganized. I couldnt figure out how to best prepare myself for tests, and had trouble finding things in the textbook.
Dr. Vogel is incredibly passionate about what she teaches and is excited about sharing that knowledge with others. I think she is fully conscious that this class is taken by students whose expertise is not science, so she tries to explain it so that students will understand. Her lectures can occasionally seem to drone on, but she means well.
This is one of my few contributions to this site. If you are at Auburn and need to take Concepts of Science, do what you can to be in Dr. Vogel's class. It was a fun semester and we had plenty of projects and activities in class. The homework assigned was relevant and she enjoyed discussing the homework topics in class.
This class is extremely hard! After hours of studying I still don't know half of the material. The PowerPoints aren't accessible and there are little study guides which don't help. I wouldn't recommend this professor as this class was extremely hard for not reason.
Gives really interesting lectures. She focuses on teaching, not making the class hard. You will come out of the class learning some really interesting things that may or may not be related to Geology, regardless of if you like Geology or not.
Dr. Vogel is very passionate about geology, which makes her lectures much more enjoyable. She explains concepts in a fun and educational way, and her quizzes/exams take mostly from her PowerPoints. She also puts her additional commentary from class into the exams. If you keep up with work and study well, it'll be easy to get an A.
I. LOVE. THIS. WOMAN. By far the BEST teacher I've had at Auburn. Not many people really care about the class, and people tend to make jokes, but she handles it well. Makes an effort to learn everyone's names. Tests are similar to weekly lecture quizzes. Just look over them and you'll be fine. Super funny and caring. I wish I could take her again!
I took this class online asynchronous. The lectures helped summarize the textbook readings, and the reading checks had three tries with feedback. Five cumulative quizzes and a midterm and final. Labs took awhile since some were interactive and others required deep thinking about the material. Dr. Vogels responses to emails could have been quicker.
I took Dr. Vogels online SCMH. Her lectures were always all over the place. She also would grade things very slowly, and her feedback and directions never made much sense IMO. If you get covid be ready for no extension and for your email to get ignored when you ask for help during that time. Also assigns way more than 4 hours of course work.
Vogel is very into her job and her lectures are a little scattered because she goes on rants about random things so you don't really know what is on the test. There are very long lectures but the quizzes and tests were not difficult espiecially if you take the course online. She is not a tough grader on labs but follow directions and you'll be fine
I took this class online and it was so easy. Blow off class for me. You did have to put in a little bit of work because she does assign quite a bit of stuff. Mostly everything can be found online. You do have to rent her textbook and lab manual online though. Overall, not hard
Dr. Vogel's lectures were very hard to follow, but class is not mandatory. Tests and quizzes are taken at home, so you never have to go to class if you don't want to. The lab is really boring, but if you have a good TA its not the worst. Super easy, just remember to do your assignments.
This professor was hard for no reason. After countless hours I felt as though the exams were still very hard. The exams are open-note, but nothing is on quizlet. If you want an easy A this is NOT your professor. I received a 0 on the final exam when I followed the directions and submitted it on time with no explantation.
Professor is hard. However, she responds to emails very quickly and is willing to help you in any way she can. Which is very nice. Although I studied for hours, I feel as though it was hard to retain any information. I would not take this professor if you are looking for an east A, but if you want to learn, she is there to help.
If you aren't a science person, this class is for you. Attendance isn't required, and tests weren't in person. There are barely any assignments and the class doesn't require much work at all. The lab is stupid easy to the point where it feels like a waste of time, but better that than it being impossible.
Really enjoyed taking her class. It was required by Auburn to complete my science sequence as a transfer student. Sad to see so many low ratings, but I suppose that comes with the territory of teaching freshman classes to kids fresh out of highschool. As a recent graduate, I was looking over my old courses and remembered working with her fondly.
She is a passionate professor, but she is very scatterbrained and unorganized. She can't really teach well and rambles too much. The lectures are very lengthy, confusing and hard to retain information from. The study guide doesn't correspond with the test. It's hard to know what information to you need know for the lectures quizzes and tests.
Very unorganized, hard to follow. Cares a lot about the subject but took this class to get an easy A and ended up being one of the classes I had to really focus on for this semester which sucked. Long, lengthy lectures and tests were impossible. Wouldn't take this class again
Lectures were tiresome and I stopped going to class pretty quickly. Lecture quizzes account for 28% of the grade and they can be worded confusingly. Sometimes the answers aren't in the notes or the textbook and they are too specific to lookup. Exams were the same way and the study guides were not much help at all.
The people complaining just didn't show up to class. This is not a hard course and the amount of bonus available is ludicrous. On top of bonus, the midterm and final are such a small portion of the final grade that you can do poorly on them and still make an A. She cares a lot about the subject & students; just show up to class. It was a cake walk!
If you can help it, DO NOT take Dr. Vogel. This class will not be easy and you will not know when things are due because there is no kind of organization. Don't even bother completing the study guide because none of that will be on the test. She is harsh and her lectures and powerpoints are extremely hard to follow.
She is very passionate about science but she is not good at teaching it. Her power points are impossible to decipher unless you already know the topics. She goes off topic in class and rarely covers material that is on the exams. Her exam questions are random details from her slides and pictures of things we looked at for ten seconds in class
I hated this class. Lectures felt like she was just speaking gibberish and not teaching at all. Wanted to waste time doing meditation instead of science. Tests did not line up with her study guide at ALL. Not to mention the countless reading quizzes every week. Lab was nice with Lauren Talkington as the TA
Overall, I enjoyed Dr. Vogel. Her lectures were not very helpful, but you can tell she loves what she is teaching. As long as you come to the lectures and make sure to read the textbook, you can do well in the class. She has also been very gracious to the class, and she is very understanding.
This class is the same as 8th grade science. I didn't go to class all the time and still did very good. Class is not mandatory but labs are but they are very easy my TA was amazing
Lectures consisted of her rambling about choice subjects which would not help prepare you for the following tests. Test questions were very ambiguous and nothing like the study guides that she would provide.
Lectures are not mandatory and you definitely don't need to go to class, because tests don't mean anything. She provides study guides that have nothing to do with her tests, but her tests don't mean anything as long as you do good on lecture quizzes.
So I had Dr. Vogel for Dynamic Earth last semester in person and now I'm taking her for Life through time and I think the structure of her class just works way better online. Her in-person lectures were always confusing, but online it's a lot easier to understand. The way she does labs too is super easy, just sometimes can take a while.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! Lectures were extremely boring and she would go completely off topic. Made us study guides but then would ask questions on the test not relating to the study guide at all and completely impossible. The lab was easy, but the test portion was awful. If you are taking this as a required pre-req, find a better teacher!!
If I could go back to the time when I make schedules, I would not take her.
If I could go back I would not take this science class again. Every week you do something different and lectures never make sense. You can study all week for tests just for nothing you studied to be on the study guide, it's really hard to get a good grade in here.
Her lectures are confusing and unhelpful. The whole seems unorganized and the tests don't usually follow the slides or study guides. She has made a lot of false promises of extra credit and she has gone against what it says on her syllabus multiple times.

This professor is all over the place. So far my least favorite at Auburn. Extremely strict with Auburn's excused absences. She doesn't give good lectures, never answers emails, and makes an easy class become a big hassle. If you read this professor, I hope no one takes this class. I am extremely happy to never listen to your odd words again.

She's a little odd at times but ppl saying it's "impossible" to get a good grade aren't telling the truth. Most of the questions on the tests come straight from the reading checks, study those and you'll do fine. The study guides aren't the most helpful and I'm terrible at science usually, but I studied the night before all the exams and got an A.
This lady is a nut job. She goes on random tangents during class and i never learnt a thing. Luckily all the quizzes and stuff are online and relatively easy. The tests are really hard but do not weigh heavy. Its an easy b and if you put in the effort an A. I really disliked this class but if I had to I would take it again

Dr. Vogel's lectures are all over the place and not really relevant to the material. The first half of the lab quizzes were nearly impossible to make a good grade on. Reading checks are multiple attempts. Study the reading checks and key points of the textbook and you should be fine. The tests are insane but they don't weigh heavy.
I am not sure why she has such low reviews. A little accent-heavy but really nice and this class is super easy. Everyone ik has As. I wouldn't trust the other reviews and I would take this class. I have barely studied and been to class and I got an A. Very common sense. All the bad reviews are from Concepts of Science. Take weather class trust.
I took concepts of science online, and that was the best choice. The work is easy and manageable online, but I think it would be harder in person. She gives you lots of chances to fix your work if you missed something. Her emails can be sassy, but she will usually help you. Definitely take this class online if you can.

The teacher is all over the place in her lectures and does not give you any clue as to what will be on the test. textbook is extremely difficult to navigate and poorly put together somehow made it the most confusing textbook I've come across. even if you make 100% on the lab quizzes they will revert to 0% if you miss or fail the lab activity associated with them. Worst online class I've taken thus far, terrible instructor. very confusing labs activities.

She's cuckoo as Coco Puffs, but the class isn't terribly hard. It's more entertaining than frustrating. With few exceptions, the work that gets you credit is mostly open-book so you shouldn't struggle if you keep up with the deadlines. I haven't finished the class, but I have a 99% with almost no effort.
Dr. Vogel loves geology with her whole heart, which is wonderful. The only complaint I have is how difficult it can be to take notes in her class sometimes. She frequently changes slides very quickly in all directions, but she's very knowledgeable. Her exams have study guides, and she loves to answer questions and see cool rocks you find!

Lectures are nonsensical, unrelated tangents. Gives a study guide but only about 30-40% of it is what's on the exam. Also, her materials look like they were written when she was drunk. An example: "What are colors and how what are some aspectss of organisms' handling of visible light on earth?" Be ready to have to just figure it out.
Never been so confused in my life. So many side tangents and so hard to stay focused on what she is trying to teach. Nice lady, but I would not take her for a science.
I've never been so confused. Her first exam had questions that didn't even make sense nor relate to the content. Everytime I come to lecture, I regret it. I cannnot understand what she's talking about. She's talking about history and atomic bombs right now, and our war with Japan. I'm scared for the Exam on Thursday.

This class was honestly a mess. The lectures were random and unorganized, and she could not stay on one topic. Most people stopped going because it felt pointless. The tests were extremely hard and often unrelated to what we learned. She is smart but really needs to organize her thoughts and her class better.

I don't understand all the hate towards her! I do not find it hard to take notes in her class and she is very lenient with assignments and due dates. Clearly very passionate about geology and maybe a little eccentric(gets off on geology rants a lot) but is very accommodating if we get behind and moves exams to later dates. Go to class!
She just is really passionate about rocks!! Go to class and actually listen. She gives a study guide for the test, be able to fill it out thoroughly. The material is not necessarily hard, but it is not common logic. She is quirky but she cares about her students. Exams are not heavily weighted so it is not a big stresser.
Nobody goes to her lectures because they're pretty hard to keep track of and it's not really worth it. You can do well by just keeping up with the work. She gives so much extra credit because everyone fails her tests.

She seems to really love Geology. Her notes are extremely hard to follow and her lectures are all over the place. In addition to this she tries making charts on the board and no one can read them because of her handwriting. She bases the majority of her test off the Reading Checks. I would avoid taking this class with her.
I thought this class was going to be easy but it wasn't. The lectures are so boring but she is a little quirky which makes it slightly more interesting. I stopped going midway through and did about the same on exams as I did in the beginning. The study guides aren't actually helpful for the exam so that sucks. I did not like this class.
I would avoid taking her if you can, the lectures are all over the place and she frequently gets off topic and you have no idea what she is talking about. The tests are almost impossible because they have nothing to do with the lectures but they don't account for much because of all the other assignments. If you can pick someone different I would.
Even though I ended this class with a good grade, Dr. Vogel does not teach material on the exam. I have tried every way to study for this class and nothing worked. Every in person exam had a failing class average, which says a lot. The other assignments in the course makes it possible to get a good grade in this course.
Her lectures are all over the place and class is rarely productive, she just talks about things that interest her. Whether you go to class or not will not determine your grade. The exams are impossible but they don't count for much and she tries to give you opportunity to get points back. You'll end up with a fine grade but hate the class.
She is nice, but this class is terrible. They tell you to take geology because it's easy, but it's the most challenging class. The lab quizzes are awful. The entire class is just a lecture, and it's so boring. Would not take again.
For people not in geology or science, I can definitely see how this class would be tough. I'm a science major, so I personally loved her and the class, but the lectures were hard to follow, and the exams were kinda hard. THE TEXTBOOK IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. Attendance is sort of enforced; no strict policy, but iClicker quizzes are sometimes used.
Three exams, and most people struggle on them. Lectures aren't very helpful, so going often feels pointless. Lab grades, extra credit, and assignments carry the class and balance out the low exam scores. Lots of football players take it, which says something about the class.
Lectures are long and boring and have nothing to do with the content you are learning so going to class seems pointless. Exams are extremely hard to prepare for and lots of students struggle on them. Reading checks and other online assignments help balance your grade so it is very possible to pass the class with a strong score.
Overall not a good professor, her lectures do not teach you anything relevant to the exams. A lot of your grade comes from reaching checks and textbook quizzes which will carry your grade if you read the textbook.
