Very big on class discussion, good reviews for tests, grades papers a little tough... at times a little confusing. Definetly helps you if you fall behind. Goog guy!
Nice guy, easy class. Mostly lecture will large group discussions. No real homework, mostly just reading and keeping up with class discussions.
Dr. Smillov is a character. Class discussions are interesting. He is not your typical liberal college professor, this guy actually thinks beyond the democratic party. Class participation is a must, so don't tale his class if you're shy.
hard to tell what he is thinking because stuff just comes out of his mind. nice guy. test are fairly good but over all take him if you really need it
What a character! Smart guy, open minded, hence LOTS of class disscusions. Few book work if any. Loves to help you if ask for help. Smilov is foreign with a strong accent, wonderful person.
He was great! Good discussions even if i didnt agree with all of his views. Made ethics seem fun, and gave notes for the tests.
Awesome teacher. To pass? Although helpful, you don't even really have to read, just participate. He'll sum. the reading. When he is going over info and not discussion, take notes. Also used tests from previous class'. Was open note/book, but may chan
teacher is HOT!!
Definitely changes your world view! Classes center on group discussion. Lots of personality and opinion exchange. Reading book is helpful, but I usually didn't read until after discussion, Some readings are difficult to get. But, you can probably get by without reading at all. Great class!
great class, interesting discussions, totally hot teacher. tests are easy, papers a bit more difficult but far from impossible.
His class was great! Be awear that there are lots of class discussion. But his lectures are very interesting and he altered my perspective a lot. Besides he let u use the book and notes on his midterm n final! Great teacher, I got an 'A'
He's a cool Bulgarian.
as a whole class is pretty easy, class disscussion is essential to a good grade though. what lots of people may perceive as him being antagonistic in discussion is actually making you think of ways to defend your argument. whether he agrees or not he will always take the other side and agrue for it.
Class can be boaring if you don't get into the whole discussion
Great teacher! All you do is 2 papers and 2 tests (mid-term & final. Class is just discussions. Really interesting and thought provoking class. Defiantly take this PHL2600 from him.
Does not give many assignments
This is the greatest professor i had at Santa Fe. He is clear, helpful, and extremely nice. He gives sample quizes for tests and his lectures are interesting not boring.
very smart teacher!! if ur gonna talk u better be able to back it up. just reading for homework then class discussion the next day for the whole class period. 2 tests and 2 papers, in class participation, and dont miss class! easy A if u pay attention very interesting class, time goes by quick! i would definitely take him again!!
great and funny
VERY HOT! You will walk into his class the first day and be absolutely intimidated. It seems much harder than it really is. As long as you pay attention in class, you will do fine. He likes to humiliate people who show up late, and he doesn't like when people make unfounded comments. I really loved this class and you will too.
Prof.Smillov is beyond wonderful. When you take it you will see what I mean.
He is an amazing professor that will make you analyze your way of reasoning. I was not the same student as I was before I took his class. The class is base on discussion and reasoning. He is by far the best professor at Santa Fe. There are only two papers and midterm plus final exam.
pretty easy...he lets you use your notes and the book on the tests and the two essays are graded really fair
This guy has an enormous knowledge of the subject. I was able to learn many new things about myself and life. His english is very good with some exception on occasion. Lets you use your notes for tests. he understands it is a fundamental class for humanities. Neat clean appearence. I really enjoyed his class and I recomend him to all.
has a wide knowledge on the subject matter, hes really cool and knows his stuff.
He is extremelly intelligent with the subject matter. He is interisting and not bad to look at. He frowns when people do not come to class. He is easy to work with just talk to him and let him know what is going on. He makes class fun. His tests are on-line. You do two papers, he is not a strict grader, you do what he asks and come to class you pas

Awesome professor. Definitely knows his stuff! Highly recommended!
Mr. Smillov is a great teacher! He really knows what he is talking about and really wants to be there!! I had a wonderful time in the class and wished I would have taken it during the regular semester so I could have had him longer!! I'd reccomend him to everyone!
Mr. Smillov is a great guy and I recommend him 100%. His class is interesting and he makes if fun with the discussions. The tests, quizzes and assignments are all online and he gives you plenty of time for completion. The class is a breeze and Smillov is great.
He's not the most interesting person, but he knows his stuff. He tends to go on rants on what he believes in, but he won't mark you down if you disagree with him.
Attendance is important to him. If you attend class, pay attention and participate the quizzes will be easier. Making your overall experience easier.
wonderful teacher! attendance is very important but the class is interesting enough to where its not a hassel to be going. he knocks out the sterotype that ethics is supposed to be a rediculously hard class. i would def take him again.
Like everyone has said, coming to class is not an option. But he's fun and the subject is pretty cool, so no worries. I disagreed with a lot of stuff he said and he loved having debates over it. No homework, no real reading, just come and make sure to speak up...he likes people who talk! Would definitely take him again!
Just pay attention and everything else comes super easy! I loved this class!
REally great class, good arguments, take notes on the philosophers for exams.
Great teacher...he keeps it fun with interestig stories. take good notes and come to class and you will do just fine!
TAKE THIS CLASS!! dude is awesome! tests are all online and class is fun and laid back. prof is very open minded to anything!! TRUST ME, take this class for a good grade!
Awesome class! Easy! He gets on tangents and you don't learn a lick of logic but it is fun!
I took this class just to satisfy that section. I took Smillov because my boyfriend took him for Ethics and told me that the quizzes were exactly like the test, which ended up not being true for Philosophy. Attendance is very important to him. All you have the whole semester is 2 quizzes online, 2 tests online, and 2 papers you submit online.
I took him in the summer and he was great! I never brought the textbook and I got a B in the class. The online quizzes and test are not hard. If you come to class and remember what was discussed, you will do good on the test. Easy grade!
Dr. Smillov... is one the best philosiohers in our time. He's very knowledgeable when it comes to what he's teaching. Have fun, have an open mind, share your thoughts concerning what he's lecturing, ask questions... and I gurantee you'll increase!
Like Pr. Smillov, very easy instructor.
If you are a liberal, this is not the class for you. You will get offened very easily. Dr. Smillov is very conservative. He will fight you to the death on contravertial issues. Its an easy class. As long as you can give a well thought out argument to support yourself, then you'll do just fine.
The most boring professor I have ever had. My friend and I read the Alligator, texted, and did crosswords every single class and I got a A. It was an absolute easy class because the tests were open book and online. There were 2 papers that were really short and he did not grade too hard. Attendance is mandatory.
He is one of the best teachers. He makes all of his points crystal clear, and also fun. I took him for Summer and it wasnt a hard class. Great ways of teaching, def. would recommend him
Awesome teacher. Keeps everything interesting. He is very conservative but even being a self described liberal I had no problem with that.He is always respecteful and makes sure students are as well. The in class discussions are fair and lively. This class has made me more intersted in philosophy a topic I previously had no interest in.
Great professor. I became very interested in philosophy after taking his class. He is pretty funny too.The class is pretty easy, but attendance is mandatory.
He has a genuine love of philosophy, but more then that I believe his main goal is to loosen the bind of structured rhetoric and allow his students to think critically and seriously about the subject matter. He is conservatively minded, both in religious matters and political, but he is open minded and non-judgmental at the same time. Even given hi
I'm not a fan of philosophy, and the class was a little boring. Mostly because I was one of 3 people to talk. Just do the reading and pay attention in lectures. Try not to take early, as some topics are kind of dry. Essentially, the more you participate the more he likes you, and the easier he grades on your papers.
For a Bulgarian teacher, He's frickin hot, dude. Wow... It was good enough sitting in class all semester looking at him. I have no clue what he said/talked about. The class was pretty simple. It involves a lot of talking. I didn't ever read the book once and got a good grade in the class. He's a cool person. I'd take more of his clases
It is a verry eassy class. There are two exams (Midterm and final) both are online. He gives you plenty of time to do the exams. Most of the questions comes straight from the book. I didn't read any chapters, but i still got an A. Participation is important. I would take him again!!
He has a real passion for philosophy. You can tell he really tries to make a difference in your life and make you think. Participation is a must in this class. The more you express your opinion the more he likes you. There are only 4 grades so you dont have much for mess ups!
Informal Logic with Smillov is a boring yet pretty easy class. 3 papers and 2 tests (a midterm and final). Tests are pretty challenging, but are taken online. He rarely lectures, and instead lets students debate and discuss various viewpoints of controversial subjects. If you don't talk, class is boring. He's a good guy, and loves what he does.
GREAT professor. Very laid back and wants your feedback on things talked about in class. 2 papers and 2 tests, all online. very possible to get an A
Dr. Smillov is very friendly and loves teaching Philosophy. He likes groups discussions and feedback. He treats everyone fairly and runs the class very professionally. I couldn't recommend this guy more. There are two exams and two papers plus 6 points or so for attendance (although not mandatory).
Professor Smillov is great! He is very wise. He cares a lot about attendance but if you go to class and participate he will love you and give you the benefit of the doubt! There's only two papers and two tests. Definitely take his class he's great! I also loved his accent, makes the class soo funny!
I'm kind of on the fence with this guy. He likes teaching Ethics, that's for sure, but he's too stuck on his own views. Class discussions are basically him trying to persuade you to join his side of the argument and his views are quite conservative. He's nice and all, and it's a somewhat easy class, but I can't really say I learned anything.
Professor Smillov is a really nice guy. He cares about his students and wants them to do well. You have to be willing to put in the work though. Not many grades, but if you try hard and come to class regularly, he will make sure you pass. His class was also interesting. Participation is good. I recommend him!
Awesome teacher. Simply awesome. 2 easy papers. 2 easy tests. All online. The class is essentially a discussion/debate on issues. He loves to hear feedback from students. I came in thinking "wow ethics, SO boring." Prof Smillov gave me a whole new perpspective on ethics. I took this class Summer A at 8am and looked forward to it everyday. GREAT!
The class is very easy, the lectures are boring, but you get used to it. He is a very good teacher and this is a good class. I would recommend him.
The best teacher ever!!!! 2 of the easiest online test ever. Easy, straight forward (2)papers. I took it in summer A and it was amazing! Easy A. He made the class interesting!
I took Logic with Smillov and it was awesome ^_^ He's a really neat professor, very intelligent and interesting. He's got a lot of examples to make it easy to see how what you're learning applies to every day life. Read the book and his notes, the tests are easy, I got a 100% on every essay just check your grammar. Would recommend him to anyone.
Eh... I hate philosophy, I barely understand half the stuff he is talking about. He is ok.
Dr. smillov is very knowledgeable, allows students to debate openly and will support or critique your thoughts in a professional manner. very interesting conversations and fairly easy at grading.also very understanding and very human.
Great professor. An easy class thats very interesting. Just do well on the few essays he gives you and you'll do great. Smilnov ROCKS
His class is very easy, but you have to do well on the few assignments that he gives you, because there are not many. He can get pretty funny at times and he keeps it interseting and loves to have class involvement. Good Teacher to take philosophy with.
Super interesting class. Such a nice person. Class discussions are interesting. You will learn a lot and enjoy it in the process. You MUST come to class. He doesn't like it if you miss class.
He's a really good teacher. Take this class if you like debating, because this is what you end up doing most class days if you have strong minded people in your class. Tests are easy and difficult at the same time. Make sure you show up to class and participate. Overall he's a good teacher and this is a good class, take it if you need the credit.
He is kind of dry, but sometimes he lightens up. He doesn't help you very much because he feels like students are "spoon fed" material too often. Makes the subject relate to real life situations to help you better understand the main idea. A good Honors class to take!
Dr. Smillov was probably one of my favorite professors at SFC. He is understanding if you have a good reason to miss class. Theres a mid term and a final and two essays but those are your only grades. Attending class is a must and you will learn a LOT from him.. Listen to the man he knows what he's talking about. strongly recommend him.
THIS IS BY FAR my Fav. Teacher. If you wan to have a better life, well, take ethics with smillov. So so fun. Really interesting, don't miss class.
I love Smillov. He tells it like it is and there is no forbidden ground in his class. He's been incredibly understanding toward me. The most important thing to him is the intellectual discourse, not paperwork; very few assignments, lots of thought provoking dialogue. He's very intelligent (and at times opinionated, which is cool). One of my faves.
Awesome teacher. 2 papers and 2 tests. I will say he is able to open a new world view for students that are willing to learn. He is conservative and will argue his views. Great class, just show up ready to learn, and have fun. Dr. Smillov provides theories and arguments and leaves you to be the judge of them. I learned a lot. Highly Recommended
Great professor. He was very helpful if you have any questions. All of his tests are online and he lets you pick your own topic for essays. No homework.
Took him for Into to Phi. Very smart and open, yeah he's religious but don't listen to these jerks saying he only cares about Christianity, not true, he is fair and doesn't beat you with a Bible, listens to everyone's opinions. Funny and thought-provoking! Great class.
Dr. Smillov is an awesome professor. While he can be opinionated, he knows what he is talking about, and he loves to bring up though provoking topics which makes class very interesting! He is pretty easy, only 3 papers, a midterm and a final. If you pay attention and study, you should have no problem getting an A!
Mr. Smillov is a funny guy, and while I may not have been interested in the class material, he is a very generous man
BRILLIANT! GREAT TEACHER!!
Do not take this class if: you think gays should get married, hate Fox news, or think it's great that women have entered the work force. This man preached all semester that: gays marrying and adopting will ruin the country, a woman's place in in her home, and all the other conservative bull you hear on Fox. I was SHOCKED and saddened. DROP IT!
Dr. Smillov is a fantastic teacher who has a great understanding and perspective on life. He will challenge you to think for yourself. He may come across as conservative but is willing to discuss just about any topic at all. Just come prepared with intelligent thoughts, and you will do fine in this class.
Smillov is a great professor. The class was very interesting and there were a lot of discussions. Not much work, 2 tests, 2 essays, and 1 class presentation. Overall, it was probably my favorite class of the semester. Highly recommended.
Very easy class, but he does cherry pick which ethical problems he agrees with and which ones he will discuss to the full extent. Instead of allowing us to choose for ourselves, he preaches in class as well.
Awesome Teacher. Easy class if you pay attention and take a couple notes. 2 papers, midterm, and final (which are both multiple choice online)! Interesting topics and he tries to spark a debate. I looked forward to going to this class.
He is a very good teacher. Even if you do aweful on your exams, as long as you pay attention in class and try to debate, you can easily get an A.
Prof. Smillov's class is extremely interesting. The whole class is a discussion, but you need to read the reading list - it will be one the exams. 2 papers to write ans 2 exams... and that's it. Take this professor he's a very interesting guy.
Dr. Smillov is hilarious. He mostly just lectured us, but he ask us, "What do we think about all the philosophy." There were 2 tests on Angel and 2 essays. The two essays were MS format. Attendance was not mandatory but he said that it make a difference if you came to class, from a C to a B. He told to us read about the philosophers in the book.
Pay attention, show up, do the work = receive an "A". It's not difficult. He's funny, easy on the eyes, interesting, intelligent, and you don't have to agree with him to enjoy his class. Question everything; don't be afraid to learn. Take his class; you'll be glad you did.
LOVE.THIS.GUY!! He's an awesome all around. Easy grader. Just always respond to him in class & do the work he assigns (which is 2 essays for the whole semester and then a midterm and final) and show up for class. He's super interesting and HILARIOUS. Took him for philosophy and now biomed ethics. Easiest A ever. He knows what he's talking about.
You learn a lot in this class. However, there are only two essays and two tests. If you are not a good test taker, or a good writer, this is not the class for you. The phrasing on the tests was difficult to understand.
Mr. Smillov is a very good teacher. His class is extremely easy, there are only 2 essays and a midterm and final exam. The class is very interesting and I recommend taking philosophy with Mr. Smillov.
I've been at Santa Fe for two years now and he is BY FAR the best teacher I have ever had here. Not to mention, he's funny, intelligent, and quite good looking too... He makes class very interesting by encouraging debates about current events, ethical issues, etc. He is very clear about what he expects from his students.
HE NEVER STAYS ON TOPIC...take this class if you want to be harshly judged and degraded because your religious beliefs do not match up with this sophist. this man is rude and opinionated, not like a philosophy professor should be.
If you need the credit, this is an easy class. Be prepared for some sexism ideals. Go into it open minded. It can be frustrating if you disagree with his arguments because he makes it difficult to share your side. He isn't sexism himself but often leads the discussion that way and the class runs with it. Just keep calm and listen openly.
LOVE THIS GUY!!! He's funny and really nice. He doesn't assign homework and all of his exams (including the final) are on angel. All you really need to do to get an A in his class is show up for class and participate in the class discussions. He does have his own views on different topics but he likes to hear other views as well which is the point.
I absolutely loved his class!! The discussions were very interesting, and Dr. Smillov is fun to listen to. He keeps the lecture fun. The class is easy to pass as long as you are willing to put forth the effort. There are no homework assignments, there are a few essays and a couple of tests. He wants to see you succeed. I highly recommend him!!
The discussions are fun, he does have his own opinions,if you're easily offended good luck to you in all aspects of life. He keeps things interesting and welcomes the opinions from others. He is open minded. You pretty much have to try to fail being as how attendance, a couple essays, and tests are all that's required of his students.
Marin runs a laissez-faire classroom, and is a bit prone to tangential conversations; but overall, he really wants his students to succeed. He accepts challenges to the ideas he presents, but make sure you have a valid argument; he also teaches Logic. I would have liked a more indepth take on the subject, but there were a lot of voices in the room.
Tests are online. Attendance is mandatory. Three essays, one midterm and one final. His lectures are really more supplementary towards the reading. Some class lectures felt empty but I feel like I learned something from this class.
Smillov is a wonderful speaker and professor. Although attendance is mandatory, the class is worth going to. 2 exams and 2 papers that he is an easy grader on. Highly recommend.
Dr. Smillov is a good professor. He really wants his students to learn and understand logic. You really have to think deeply about what he says. Go into the class with an open mind and you will learn more.
Awesome professor with a sense of humor. I loved this class, the discussions were very interesting and fun! 2 easy papers and 2 tests which he gives a study guide for. Lets you retake tests. Take him!
Great Professor very knowledgeable in the field. Easy grader 2 essays and 2 Test. For Test you can use notes and for the last test if not satisfied with grade you can retake the final which has the same questions as the first time you take it.
Highly recommended. He is a great professor and cares for his students. Attendance and participation is mandatory. Expect 2 tests and 2 papers. No reason not to get an A.
Hilarious, tests are open book and note, book is needed
Mr. Smillov was an awesome professor and there was only two tests and two papers. Definitely buy/rent the book because he lets you use it on tests. Also attendance is graded! He was sooo funny and nice, would 100% take him again.
Awesome Tacher, always willing to help and cares for his students.
Professor Smillov is a good professor. He's funny, and he makes his classes all about participation which makes the topics easier to understand. He's willing to help you when needed. Although I didn't agree with half the things he said, I still learned a lot. Attendance is graded, there are only two papers and two tests. Overall, a good choice!
Wonderful professor ! Two test and two essays . Open book and open notes or any reference you can use . he's a easy grader just looks to see if you put in effort . Grades attendance so you should show up its 5% of your grade and helps a lot if your not a good test taker ! I managed to get a b+. You barely crack the book , just pay attention!
Do multiple revisions of the two essays assigned before turning in to Turnitin. Send him parts of your essay over Canvas if you're unsure about your writing. Bring your essay to class. Participate in lecture. It's actually fun! Scrape all PDF notes and print them out to bring to midterm and final tests -- they are harder than the essays.
Dr. Smillov is such a great guy and teacher. His lectures are so interesting to listen to and hear about different ways of life. He genuinely wants you to do well and learn the material. Attendance is a grade. Very little work to do, 1 midterm, 1 final, 2 papers, and thats really about it.
An amazing professor to say the least. He made philosophy real life relatable. His lectures draw you in and are actually interesting and eye opening. The best part about this class is the light workload. He wants you to actually learn, not just obtain a grade. That's exactly what happened for me.
His lectures are very interesting. Easy class + tests are open book. Made me more interested in philosophy. Essays make you think but are not too difficult. Be prepared to answer questions and talk.
You are required to take two exams and write two papers. He gives you all of your notes so all you need to do is listen. Loved this teacher would take again!
Professor Smillov is an excellent instructor for several different reasons. His lectures although long are very well spoken and easy to follow along. He is very opinionated and gives the students room to debate their opinions on the topics as well. Professor Smillov balances the seriousness of the study with humor along the way.
You have a mid term and final exam and they are open book and open notes and all the notes will be on Power Points in canvas. You have 2 paper double space and 5 to 6 pages but the topics you can choose and they arent diffcult to write about. Just do good on the essays and the lowest you get on the exams are a C and youll be fine. Go to class!
This wasn't a very difficult class to begin with, but Professor Smillov was a good choice for it. His lectures really go into the controversies of ethical theories and decisions. You have to do all of the assignments (there aren't many) to get a good grade and attendance is taken and graded, but overall a good choice for ethics.
Dr. Smillov is a great professor !! I would strongly recommend him for any class. His tests are hard, you have to really study in order to get a good grade. In the essays, just do it with effort and you'll be fine. He is great! he cares
Prof. Smillov makes lectures fun even though it is an 8am class. He is funny and really knows how to relate the topics to our everyday lives. Tests are open book /notes but they are timed so be prepared for that. I highly recommend this professor!
very interesting class. Loved it
Great Professor! He has his own opinion but never pushes them on you. He allows you to draw your own conclusions on which theories and ways of life you want to live. He loves hearing what you have to say and asks individuals what their thoughts are. The Midterm and Final are open not open book, and he may give extra credit. Chose him.
Only graded on Attendance, 2 papers, and 2 tests. Class was super easy A. Tests all open notes with E.C., lowest grade for papers was like a 80%. Not great at being open to other people's input. Literally late every single day to class. Likes to call on people asking for their thoughts but really just wants yes-men to nod their head. Very ok class
Personally hate the subject itself, but it was at least bearable with him as the prof. He is very understanding and will work with you in most instances. He called on me a lot so be prepared to get called on! Make sure to really look over the powerpoints for exams. His lectures often go awry. Still hate the class though, but still passed!
I actually really enjoyed Mr. Smillov as my prof. He knows the material he is teaching & never gives homework. We write 2 papers throughout the whole course and he doesn't grade strict. If you engage in the discussions in class he will love you. Ps ALL TEST are OPEN NOTES/OPEN BOOK. If you get below a B in his class you tried to fail.
I really enjoyed listening to him. He doesn't push anything on you. If you don't agree with his views, he likes intelligent feedback. Open note and open book tests. Some papers
I was told to take this class because it was easy. But I still have no idea what the class was actually about. There were no tests except the midterm and final and those were open book and open note. That and two papers were what the grade consisted of. That makes it so hard to get an A. He also just expected you to know the material beforehand.
Buy the textbook! The tests are open note/book so print out the power points/notes. Two papers which were somewhat easy (3-4 pages and the 5-6). Class has a lot of interesting discussions but can get boring at times. DON'T SKIP CLASS. I missed twice and my overall grade went from 100 to 92.
He is a good teacher! Will help you if you need it! I enjoyed the class. Just make sure you listen and having the book is necessary.
The class was all lectures, 2 essays, and 2 Tests. The tests were open notes/book; however, they followed his lectures and the book directly. The 2 essays were straightforward and as long as you addressed all points you received a good grade. Professor Smillov is an excellent professor who ensures you learn without having to worry about grades.
He's a nice guy and throughout the course there's very few assignments. The class is based on 5 grades: Attendance, 2 papers, a midterm and final exam. Because of this, it is easy to make or break your overall grade. Course is fairly easy, but listening to his lectures is EXTREMELY hard. You will find lecture uninteresting, long and uneventful.
Professor Smillov was an interesting professor, who gave interesting lectures. The class is based on two exams, and two papers. He's a fair grader, so just take the time to study and put the work in and you'll do fine.
Hes a real down to earth guy. He understands people have more than just his class. Reading the book and listening to his lectures was key to doing well in the class. Hes also a very funny person.
Hilarious human being! I would def take him again! He cares about others opinions. He will ask about yours so try not to be shy in that class! His grading is not bad but at least do the work. It's only a page worth which should be easy for college students. There was a research paper at the end of the term but he gives you ideas to write about.
This professor isnt a bad professor he is really nice, funny, and understanding However I still have no idea what the class was about There are only 2 one page papers and 2 exams Everyday i was lost in his lectures since all he does is speak for the entire class period Rarely uses powerpoints and documents Dont take this class looking for an easy A
Dr. Smillov allowed me to gauge the realities of healthcare through this class. Granted, his lectures can be a bit dull, but he accepts this and tries to throw in some funny anecdotes here and there.
Dr. Smillov was a great teacher that had some very interesting lectures. This class is an easy A as long as you go to class and complete the 2 papers, and tests. Both tests were open note/book.
A really funny and interesting professor. He likes to get to you know your name and ask for your input on a topic. Only 2 essays that are graded easily and 2 open-note tests. Easy A :)
Interesting style of teaching. Hilarious and knows his stuff, but very little actual learning. Two VERY easy open note midterm and final exams (take good notes) and two easy graded papers. Easy class but no point in going. Harsh but wants you to succeed. Overall good but too simple and not enough teaching. take for easy a, don't for learning.
I loved Dr. Smillov's class. It was interesting, wasn't too lecture heavy, and always looked for comments and discussion starters. 2 Really easily graded papers, and 2 really easy exams. I learned so much from his class and i'd take him again in a heartbeat. The students do determine how much you get from this class, so hope for a talkative class.
Great professor! No homework in this class, he only gives quizzes online based on the lectures he gave over the week. If you do well on the quizzes you won't have to take the midterm or final. He's funny and actually hopes to inspire his students to be more ethical.
Participate in the group discussion and you will pass the class. Only two essays and he may give the option of 5 weekly quizzes which can account for your exam grade. You will read chapters in the book. He emphasizes them so you can be prepared for next lecture. However his lecture goes over the book contents. Accent isn't thick but it's there
This is one of the easiest classes you can take if you just show up, weekly quizzes are easy and can replace an exam grade with the average. The exams are fairly easy with a published study guide and lets you retake them as well. Definitely a great lecturer as most classes are open discussion with reference to the course material.
Attendance is part of your grade. He will explain why. He is a great teacher. There are only 2 papers that are a good portion of your grade so make sure that you spend a good amount of time on those. Other than that a very easy course that he makes enjoyable. Also don't bother with the book he usually takes things out of his lecture notes.
I loved Professor Smillov! Lectures can be a bit pessimistic but he had a good sense of humor and kept them entertaining. He was really generous with my grade, and the only reason I did not receive an A was because I missed a few of his weekly quizzes which are super easy. Do those and you should pass with an A.
Professor Smillov is one of the smartest professors I had a Santa Fe. I took him in 2016 and I have thought about his class recently a lot, and I remember it well. He was reasonable with quizzes and his lectures were very clear and well-organized. I would take him again if I could.
I took Professor Smillov for Bio Medical Ethics and his lectures were very interesting! Always kept the class engaged.
All of us gave up taking notes in his class; it's easier to participate. he's passionate, and does a pretty good job of presenting all sides of things - until he gets to the things he's really passionate about, but that's understandable. A Little arrogant, but VERY accessible outside of class. Use his study guides! It's copy and paste for the test!
I often sat in class and wondered why I was there, what he was trying to say, and why I bothered taking notes. It's not what I expected based on the description of the course. Easy A for sure but wish the class was structured better. Didn't learn a thing.
This professor is definitely well educated and knows his stuff but lacks a good way to teach what he knows. Cant complain though, hes an easy grader and there are very little assignments! Take this class if you need an A.
PASS. I actually enjoy philosophy, but Smillov's class got old fast. Content was fallacious, misogynistic, superannuated. So conservative and NOT in an interesting or thought-provoking way. I'm NOT even "PC," but this sucked lol. Easy-ish A, if you're down to be condescended to by by a low-key racist prof who can't back-up his position. tbh, basic.
Pretty easy, he said buy the book but I havent used it at all this semester.
The attendance is optional due to COVID, so most people didn't show up. If you actually come to class he'll be easier on your grades because it showed effort. He cares about his students being inspired and becoming better people rather than making them memorize things. He gives a weekly quiz (10 questions and discussion (2 paragraphs) no exams
The class is lecture-heavy, but he tries to make them interesting and he knows what he's talking about. He can come off as a bit rant-y at times and when he's passionate about certain topics but I didn't really care. As long as you pay attention in class you should have no problems. Weekly quizzes and a short response question. One essay at the end
A professor that harbored discussion in the class, he wants people to participate in the conversation. He relies on two graded ethics papers, I was able to submit a paper I already used for a CCJ class for this class. He is very accommodating.
Professor Smillov is one of the best professors I have had. He made class very interesting and went into great depth while explaining course material. We only had one weekly assignment and one weekly quiz due on Sunday every week. Our final was a 7-9 page paper formulated around a number of different topics to choose from. I definitely recommend.
Weekend quizzes and journals that are all based on lecture. If you paid attention or took notes they are easy. Journals are easy if you pay attention. If you don't try on the journals you won't be able to do the final paper. If you make slight effort and try to think a little bit on your own it is all doable.
I loved taking Informal Logic and the lectures from Dr. Smillov himself. He is very genuine and he explains the material very well. Not enough people are familiar with Informal Logic, and more people should definitely take any of his Philosophy classes. You are mainly graded on ten weekly quizzes and one final research paper. Highly recommend!
Professor Smillov has been one of the best professors I've had at SFCC. I took his BioMed Ethics class first and I was impressed with how the course was structured and how much I learned from the material I decided to take his PHI2010 course too. I highly recommend professor Smillov to anyone who needs to take a philosophy class he is the best SLS.
Easy notes but often times I fell like he doesn't go too in-depth. He likes when you participate and will call on students randomly. He's not too serious and likes to joke sometimes. The assignments are easy. But, he can be very opinionated which could effect any journals you submit. Also you don't use the textbook at all unless you study with it.
Great anecdotes during lectures. People think he is opinionated in his teaching but, it's just the way he talks, he presents the theory how it was made and asks people to talk about it and he'll defend the point of all of the theories and make you think about it deeper, sometimes he forgets to bridge a point and will get mis-interpreted. Hes cool!!
Great guy, wants his students to pass.
cool guy great professor. cares about his students and wants everyone to pass.
This class is graded based on attendance, weekly quizzes based on the textbook, weekly journals (2 paragraphs) responding to the lectures, and a final paper that is worth almost half your grade. While attendance isn't a huge part of your grade, he openly admits that he's more lenient on the paper and journals if you have good attendance.
I enjoyed Professor Smillov's class very much. He is passionate about what he does, and he teaches things how they are and doesn't insert his own personal beliefs into the material. He also encourages open discussion, often asking for feedback at various points in his lectures. Very smart man, would recommend him for anybody.
Interesting lectures, you can really tell he cares about the class discussions and his students passing. The work is easy and he barely touched the textbook all semester. If you can get past the blatant misogyny then he's a great teacher, unfortunately, I could not.
It was sometimes difficult to understand him since he does have a think accent. Overall, there was 2 assignments a week, a journal and a 10 question quiz. He does grade the journals somewhat hard but he grades the final paper easy. Attendance was taken as a grade and he does increase final grade if you have good attendence. Overall an easy class.
Enjoyed the class, highly recommended.
Take this class he is the best .I really like his class you learned a lot and you have homework on Friday-Sunday which is good but he likes for you to explain and explore in your essays.
Marin's class can be a mixed bag. While he has great anecdotes, he can be opinionated. The workload is manageable, but feedback is lacking. Using unstuckstudy and the free textbook helped me stay on top of things. Overall, an engaging but uneven experience.
Definitely one of my favorite professors. The man is so intelligent and truly loves hearing new ideas. I'd recommend taking his class. The workload is easy, and the class is interesting, more importantly though the professor is amazing! Easiest 10/10 rating of my life!
He has an accent but he definitely knows what he's talking about and I can tell that he really enjoys philosophy. Kinda funny. Attendance is taking for a grade, there is a weekly discussion and quiz! Hope this helps
Professor Smillov is an amazing teacher! He explains philosophical concepts very well, and he is overall a super nice guy who is passionate about philosophy. Lots of writing for the class, and our exam is a 5-6 page final paper. Come to class, pay attention, complete your work on time, and you'll do great in his class!
He is maybe the funniest professor I've had. He does not like it when people do not show up to class, which happened often. The assignments are very easy and manageable. As long as you participate he will like you and you will be fine. Great guy who loves learning and is so interested in the world and in people. Have great conversations in class.
At first When I was taking this class, I was juggling both of his phi and ethics classes. Both classes had wonderful topics as well as clear criteria and he genuinely wants people to do better and encourages honest behavior. Quizzes are fairly easy, I consistently got around 8/10 and he is very knowledgeable about what he speaks on.
attendance is mandatory but if you email him before he will excuse it. Wont give you higher than a B on any written work.
Professor Smillov was a funny guy, but he doesn't have many assignments throughout the semester so the ones he gives, you NEED to get a good grade. He rarely gives out grades above a B. You can tell he cared about what he was saying, very opinionated, but if you zone out for even a second you could be lost for the rest of the class meeting.
Great teacher, very knowledgeable with amazing lectures.
I loved his class and would 100% take it again. You can tell he's actually interested on what he's talking about which makes it easy to listen to and overall just a great guy
Professor Smilov was great, he taught me intro to philosophy. Best way to get a good grade in this class is to immediately review the slides after class because the material does frequently come up on weekly quizzes and journals. Put your heart into the final paper, he appreciates a student who is passionate about the topic.
Dr. Smillov is an amazing professor, he knows what he's talking about and gives very good insight to things we discuss. Attendance is graded each class session and is majority of your grade. He also likes when the class participates in discussions after analyzing various topics.
He follows ideologies not common to most if you don't believe them you will fail. You can follow all of his rubric and still fail if you do not agree with his perspective. I will never take him again he gives no feed back on anything.
