Dr. Koether is very nice and helpful. some students think that she is hard because maybe they dont study. do all the hw that she assigns! HOMEWORK is the keyword in this class. there are 5 tests and they are somewhat hard. she is a tough teacher but chem 1212 is not very easy. very very smart.
I graduated several years ago and Dr. Koether is one of my worst memories of KSU. She made us memorize the periodic table which was a waste of brain power. I got a 79 in her class which made me lose my scholarship and when I asked for her help, she told me to use it as a "learning experience". cruel
The WORST teacher I have ever had in my entire life. She will not do anything to help you. And if you ask her a question in class she makes you feel stupid. I have not meet one person in my class that likes her at all!
Many may compalain about her teaching still or unwillingness to help but I disagree. She curved the overall grading scale of the class and also calcualted your grade three different ways, giving you the highest grade of the three. My guess is the people who complained did not study the material.
I don't think that she wants to be a teacher. She skirts about answering questions with, "you should know this..." and such answers. She mumbles while facing the board. Memorize the ACS book, I did and got an A after having Cs and Ds on the other test. A on final=A in course.
VERY HARD!!!
I thought she was really nice! She is quiet but she enjoys teaching and she wants her students to learn the material. :)
I dropped her course at the very last minute, because she was so hard to follow. Her notes were all over the place and never cared if we did not understand!
She is VERY FAIR and VERY helpful-if u put forth effort. BUT SHE IS NOT A PPL PERSON!! She gives out TONS of work/homework. If you dont do it, then she WILL FAIL YOU. Disagreeable temperment. U'll take notes the WHOLE class.
Dr. Koether is really a great teacher once you get to know her. She has a tough outer shell to break through, but she is really a good teacher. I learned EVERYTHING I know in chemistry from that woman. She knows her****.
I had her a year ago for 1212. If you're a student who's too lazy to do any outside work for a class, then don't bother. I got an A in her class and Organic 1 (my first semester) because of her. If you need help in something she will help as long as it isn't something that you should have read from the book or learned in class. That's on you.
Dr. Koether is my favorite instructor at KSU. She wants all her students to do well. EVERYTHING I learned in Chemistry is credited to her. She is a wonderful, caring, & warm person when you get to know her. I wish I could have taken all my chemistry with her. I don't just want to pass with an easy out, I want to learn the material for later tests.
She is a very hard instructor. She gives a lot of bonus/extra credit because her test are a killer. If you don't fully understand Chemistry, don't take her class.
Very good teacher. she is willing to help at all times. she is very clear in her teaching. Her tests are very hard though, but if you attend class and study you should have no problem.
What! this teacher is so awful, its not even funny. You have no idea, what the heck she is talking about, and she makes no sense! I studied so hard, but her test are VERY HARD, I didn't pass any of them. She is sooo RUDE to her students too!!! For real, DON'T TAKE HER!!!!! I am a A/B student and I struggled soo hard!! Some how I got a C,idk how!!
I had her for the KSU learning community Seminar class. The class is VERY EASY, lots of busy work tho. easy A. jus do the mindless work.
she tells you exactly whats on the tests and the test questions are the same as the quiz questions if you fail her class it's becuase you didn't do the assignments she told you. she's really helpful when you go to her office
Watching her work problems out on the board for an hour and fifteen minutes twice a week was almost as painful as pulling every hair out of my head... one at a time. Not approachable. Never bothered to learn names unless you sucked up. Tests were not very easy (hardly a , and there was almost daily (graded for accuracy) homework. DON'T TAKE!!!
She's hard, but fair. Her class requires a lot of work, but if you do it, you'll make the grade. Ask her for help! She loves it!
Her lectures were useless. She's too smart to teach because she can't bring it dumb it down. Stay home and read the chapters and do the WebCT assignments. Tests were hard, but the final was a breeze if you bought the study guide(it was the standard chemical society one) and it replaces all grades lower than it.
She is the professor that you want to take for Quant. If you don't understand something she'll sit down with you in her office and explain it to you until you get it. She makes herself very available to her students and wants them to succeed! Her tests are very straight forward and she practically gives them to you in her study guide!!Great teacher
Horrible teacher...I had to drop it again. I was supposed to graduate this summer but because of her, not anymore...
If u need quan to graduate, I'd suggest you don't take anything else except Quan for 1 whole semester or else you'll have to drop this class and retake it. Dr. Koether is an ok teacher but she'll give you lots of works & take over your life. She lets you replace your lowest test score w/ the ACS final. She's helpful, but I'm not recomend her.
Class requires lots of reading/problem solving. Be prepared to have your life taken from you. You will live quant-for real. Im not joking. Its crazy. However, those seeking to learn chemistry will enjoy her. Her students do well on the ACS exam (Which is the final) because of her requirements for class. Good luck.
I had Professor Koether for 1151 Lab in Summer 2011. She was really nice and very helpful. She grades fairly. She made the lab notebook so much easier than other teachers I have heard about, perhaps because we had a shorter semester. I would recommend taking her for Lab.
Dr. Koether is a professional and she expects her students to be professional as well. She will set you up for the future with deadlines, homework, and projects that are relevant. She is a hard teacher to take but chemistry is not an easy subject in the first place and if people think it is you need to pick another major. She is a great teacher.
Dr. Koether is a nice prof and straight forward. Her study guide is the test without the answers, also 90% of her test questions are from the Sapling online homework and vista quizzes; do them nd you should be fine in class
Dr. Koether was a wonderful professor for this class. If you need an easier upper level chemistry take this course! It is a lot of work and you have to actually open the book, but the amount of information you learn in this class is amazing. I didn't think I was going to like the class, but I am definitely glad I took it and she was the professor.
Excellent Chemistry teacher. Very strict and very hard, but you will learn everything you need to know about Quant. Work hard and use every bit of information she gives you.
Dr. Koether is a great professor. I took her for quant (2800), pharmaceutical analytical (3030), and adv. analytical lab (4310L). She is a fair grader and offers help when asked. Her tests are extremely easy as she gives an outline of the test as a study guide. Lectures are kind of boring but thats okay. I would definitely recommend her.
I took Dr. Koether for adv. analytical lab, as well as quant, environmental chem, and pharm chem. I have heard other students say that she is brash or unapproachable. In my experience, this could not be farther from the truth. Ask INTELLIGENT questions, be prepared, do the work. She is an invaluable resource as far as professors are concerned.
Her class is ridiculously hard for what the subject is really about. This shows her lack of awareness of a student's time and brings no relative and viable information for students to advance in analytical chemistry. Probably the worst course based on the professor and uselessness of the videos in class. This class was the biggest waste of time.
Sure, she teaches the material and she is understandable, but she's paranoid of people cheating. I am an AB student. I have never plagiarized in my life and I never intend to, but I was working on my homework with a class partner and we calculated a molecular weight incorrectly (by 1 digit) in order to do dimensional analysis-boom, cheating.
Does not teach. You would learn more if you would just spend reading the book for hours. She made me hate Chemistry and Chemistry is my major and I loved it prior to this class. She stated that you will need to drop classes for this class. I should have dropped her class instead.
She starts off the semester really strict and is rude to all of the students. After the last day to withdraw, she gradually becomes much nicer and easier to deal with. I believe this is her strange means of evolving the student population (i.e. only the strong finish). Go to her office and STUDY. She seems terrible at first but she's kinda cool.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER TAKEN. She is rude, sarcastic, has a temper, doesn't teach, and treats you like an idiot. I took her for lecture and lab and I honestly believe she is the worst "teacher" I have ever encountered. She doesn't even teach. She signs groups questions and doesn't go over how to get the answer. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Worst professor I've ever had. She's extremely rude. Every lecture was spent doing workbook pages which are based on material that she never teaches. She gives 6 exams, some of which are impossible to complete (e.g. 27 short answer questions to be completed in 50 min). Gives 1-3 homeworks/week each taking 2-5 hours to finish. Do not take her.
Grades tests out of 50 points, so miss more than two questions, boom, automatic B. That said, her tests are easy B's-C's. 6 tests, which sucked, because it was basically one every 2 weeks. Her study guides were the test. Final sucked too, so make sure you have a solid grade before it. Very nice and helpful in her office hours. Do not expect an A!
Counts attendance for a grade, 13 hw assignments the whole semester, and a test almost every 2 weeks. Not a hard class, but lots of memorizing and busy work. Tests are not hard to pass, but they are hard to get A's on. Our whole class only had like 3 or 4 A's, but A LOT of B's and C's. You will pass if you take her, but you won't learn much.
You'll hate her at first, but she'll grow on you. Bad professor, but she's nice if you go to her office hours and talk to her. This class was more about how much can you memorize from the study guide, not about actually learning the material. Final sucked, but if you put in the work, you will be okay.
This class is just hard period. It is an extremely difficult class to teach and I think Dr. Koether does her best. This class will consume your life if you want to pass. As long as she can tell you are trying, she will help as much as she can. She is socially awkward, so if she seems like she is being rude, know it isn't personal. Gives study guide
I had Ms. Koether years ago and she was tough. I still liked her class because she tried very hard to make it interesting. When I got my grade and found out I was only 2 points away from the next letter grade that I needed to keep my scholarship, I asked to do extra credit and she said "No, but I should use it as a learning experience". So hateful
I missed one class because I had a an interview, she gave me a 1/10 for participation. I do not know how that correlates, especially since I attended the rest of them. She is harsh grader and is rude when you do not do something her way. I heard that she treats you better when you try and go to her office hours.
Koether is one of those professors thats hard to make an A with, but VERY easy to make a B or C with. She doesnt curve exams or bump you. If you had an A before the final and then a very high B after the final, you WONT get bumped. She hates teaching, but is super friendly in her office. Take if you're okay with a B or C, but avoid if you want an A.
If you remember anything from high school chemistry, you should be fine with a little studying. She does not teach in the class. Makes you read a book then five minutes later you're expected to answer questions on TopHat, graded for accuracy. She does give 5 bonus points each test for attendance though. Be ready to teach yourself the material.
Do not take if you're bad at chem! Explains almost nothing. Test are short answer and there's no study guide
If you took high school chemistry, the POGIL book she uses for her honors classes should be enough to get you through. It was not too difficult if you put a few hours of studying in. She does not really teach that well, but is fine if you are an independent learner. I would recommend that you take her if you are confident in chemistry.
She isn't good at explaining concepts; if a student asks a question she responds rudely. She expects her students to come into her chem 1 class already knowing half of the course material. Her tests were very difficult and there was a lot of work that didn't help with understanding the material. I learned all of chem 1 from the class TA.
Koether is very smart but would probably be better for higher level chem students because she doesnt explain anything. She just works problems out to herself and mumbles half out loud and half in her head. The only reason I survived was bc i went to the TA's office hours for 3 hours a week. When she does explain, its the hard way to solve smthng
it was a 4 week class, we had multiple retakes, she could improve by better explaining some things, but really i have very few complaints, she was fair and overall a good professor. her grading scale was simplistic and very helpful.
Please be prepared to teach yourself! This class will truly test your patience, she lectures using tophat with paragraphs copied and pasted straight from the book, and still mess up while solving example problems on the board. You will have to help her and yourself.
She is tough because summer chemistry is rough. Prepare to work hard and dedicate a lot of time. She goes through problems quickly and can come off condescending if you ask questions. With that being said, her grading methods are geared towards helping your grade and I cant thank her enough for how well she prepared me for the ACS exam and 1212.
She is very smart and knows what she is doing, but does not know how to explain things well. She sort of mumbles and half way explains things on the board. Do not take her class if you are not comfortable teaching yourself or being in the SMART center most of the time. She can also be condescending when asking questions. I would not recommend her.
Would not recommend if you are a first year student at all. She is the epitome of a stereotypical college professor. However she is not a hard grader, she gives practice tests, and sometimes smiles.
At first, I was terrified of Professor Koether. However, as the semester went by, I realized how much she cares about her students and about her job. Koether went out of her way to help my lab partner and I pass this course and was very helpful when we didn't understand. Definitely take her! I have never felt more valued by a professor in my life!
She's one of those people you'll either love or hate. At first she's intimidating and grades very harshly, but as the semester goes on and you get the hang of it, she let's her guard down and shows a caring side. If you do as she says and ask for help, no way you can fail. Hard A, but easy B/C for lab. For lecture, I dont know since I had lab w/her
For lab she's tough but fine. In lecture though, I DO NOT recommend her at all. She does a weird system where your lowest letter grade average becomes your grade. Example, let's say hw average is 82 and test average is 99. Even though that's an A, your grade will be a B because HW average was a B. Only 1 A in our pharm chem class b/c of this. Awful
Listen here. If you are unable to teach yourself then she is not the professor for you. She gives you a little bit of info and tries to teach everyone the hard way. I had to self-teach myself, and find the easy ways all fall semester. The only good thing was that she gave you study guides that we're very similar to the test. Don't take her class!!!
A lot of people in class complained about her but she ws great. Lots of graded material. 5 tests (retake on each one), homework sheets (like 5 questions each), online homework (easy), extra credit, and the NCS final. she gives every opportunity to succeed in her class. she seems a bit stand offish but rly she's pretty funny and cool.
After reading reviews about Koether on here I assumed I would do VERY well in her class... Little did I know I was SO wrong. Personally, chemistry has always been something I've enjoyed but after taking her class I HATE it. I didn't learn a thing in her class and did not do well. She doesn't know how to teach at all. DO NOT TAKE HER.
I enjoyed this class, even though some of the sources used and instructions could use some updating. Don't procrastinate, and stay organized. Discussions use the PACCA method, which was hard to understand at first, but was fine once I got use to it. Essay, instead of a final. Quizzes were difficult.
We had 8 tests in her class which was like back to back. You pretty much have to teach yourself in her class because she sucks at explaining. If you want to save your GPA then don't take her!
She goes through the lectures quite fast but explains well and if you take notes - you will be fine. She cares a lot about your grade, always says to take the extra credit opportunity, which is there A LOT of, and always reminds to do homework. Homework online very easy as long as you pay attention in class. Taking her for my chem 2.
Tests are the study guides, but they won't teach you much of the course :/. Gen chem 2.5 , or call it precise gen chem. She can be mean/condescending at times. I heard her extra credit is department mandated (total this semester was 5.3%). Has retakes and 8 tests. Goes too fast through ppts. Overall felt pointless.
Goes through the lectures very fast. Homework assignments for extra credit which can help your grade in the end. Gave attendance quizzes that counted toward our grade. Five tests total and the final exam. She gives multiple opportunities to help your grade through homework and attendance.
if you look at the tags I chose lots of papers, but what I really mean is lots of tests. Specifically she gives 8 tests and a final, 7 of the 8 tests have retake opportunities for grade recovery. So in this class youre in a constant state of studying . She gives study guides out before each test that give you a good heads up for the test. Hard B
OK so if you can take literally any other professor for Quant, do it. Dr. Koether barely gives extra credit and doesn't give graded homework, quizzes, or anything of the sort. 8 exams each ten percent and an ACS final worth twenty percent. You can get some extra credit here and there. The overall experience was just bad.
Just goes over powerpoints but doesn't properly explain them. Makes faces/gives a sarcastic tone when answering questions. Assumes we already know what she knows so she just skims through everything forcing you to read the textbook and learn everything yourself. Stay away.
She does not explain the powerpoints she turns to the board and read word for word and goes to the next slide. When she does practice problems she zooms through them like we are supposed to know what she is talking about. She goes through the powerpoints fast as well. She does give an opportunity for extra credit though. Do not recommend her.
She "teaches" off of a single VERY large powerpoint for the entire semester. She will read word-for-word from slides and when she goes through a problem she ZOOMS through them. If you care about both passing and actually learning the material I would not take her.
she read off a PPT word for word & very fast as well as sped through the practice problems. I stopped going to class when I realized it was a waste of time since I could teach myself everything off the ppts & online resources. She made very rude and sarcastic comments a lot. She allowed exam retakes but only allowed you to earn up to 70%
So she is overall an ok professor, however, she can be a little nonchalant and rude at times when you ask her a question or would ask you a question as an answer to your question. She provides you with a study guide for exams but 9/10 you'll find something on the exam that was never mentioned in the study guide.
She was the worst teacher I've ever had she was rude to students, flew through powerpoints not exaggerating, not understanding of students during the COVID-19 shutdown. Do not take her if you want to learn and get a good grade
I am currently about to finish the semester with her. We used an online platform to turn in our assignments. We wrote random essays all semester and GRADED EACH OTHER. In class (was a hybrid), she gave us pointless worksheets from even more pointless powerpoints. DO NOT TAKE HER if she can be avoided. Waste of a class that I was excited about.
Tests and quizzes are nothing she says they will be. If you have a hard time focusing during tests, don't take her. She screams at everyone who comes in the door and accuses them of having their phone in their pockets WHILE WE TAKE THE TEST. She also makes you put your belongings in the front like middle school. She doesn't teach, she just reads GG
She is rude, begs us to come to class (all she does is read a PP), and threatened that she knew our IP addresses. She told us the first quiz was over the first 30 elmnts. The quiz was NOTHING about ANY elmnts, AND the next class, she couldn't even recite the first 10 elmnts from memory. She is a CHEM PROF. Can't learn what the teacher doesn't know.
If you are looking for a professor who will yell in the middle of you taking a test, because someone has something in their pocket, she is for you. She just reads from slides rather than actually teaching it, so if you want a teacher who doesn't even know her own subject, she is for you. If you plan to take her goodluck cause you'll need it
If I were you, I would not choose her, or make her one of your last choices because she makes you work for your grade. She does give extra credit opportunities, but it's because she knows everyone is failing in her class. I missed quiz 2 because my grandma passed away, but she would not let me retake it, so I had a 0. She also reads off the PP's.
She is a horrible communicator. She cannot convey her ideas to her students. She can be very rude and reads from her powerpoints literally word for word. I learned all of the material myself, as she was no real help.
Very strange and paranoid lady. She goes as far as checking IP addresses for online assignment submissions to make sure that no 2 students worked together. In class, she's a horrible lecturer and very paranoid about srudents cheating/copying work from others. She's okay for upper level classes, but for gen chem, stay FAR away. Tough grader too.
Honestly, I probably did so well because I have seen this material before, but she's okay at explaining the concepts she just moves through lectures/presentations too quickly. Tests were easy if you studied using MasteringChemistry and Knewton. She gives lots of homework but gives you two attempts on them. She does give LOTS of extra credit.
Read her ratings before I took the class and wanted to drop so bad but couldnt because I was in an LC. PLEASE LISTEN TO THE OTHER REVIEWS. Its probably even worse online because all she does is post work, youtube videos, and adaptive chapters that does not help. I love chem but I hate it now and its my major. KSU should do some reevaluating ASAP.
Be ready to do a lot of homework!!! She does not play, and you have no room to slack. Make sure you study. Lockdown Browser is always enforced. She allows retakes, normally a week after, but does not drop grades or give much extra credit. You have a lot of homework every week. So please don't slack the first week like I did.... It does not go away.
Took her for pharm chem and it was an okay. I was very interested in the topics but she made me hate the class with how much tedious homework she gave out. Also her powerpoints were boring and she just read them in class. Tests were all free response. If you asked for help in her office she would just tell you go review powerpoint and book, no help
I made the mistake of trying to take this class online, the workload is indescribable. She gives quizzes to see if you are learning the information, but the questions are ridiculous. She will say her dogs name in a video and expect you to know it on the checklist quizzes. Her only good side is that she grades SUPER easily and there is a huge curve
Do NOT take her. I took her for an online class and she posted absolutely zero recordings/lectures. She posted some slides and gave assigned readings, then had us grade other students' work. She really stretches the definition of the word teacher, because she taught us nothing and I learned nothing from her class. Lots of essays and busy work.
Professor Koether is very tough. I will say she did provide a lot of resources to help improve performance. There were practice quizzes that were kind of a replication of the actual quiz. Overall this is a fast paced class and requires 100% of your attention, especially with this professor. She is a tad bit rude! Take only if you can commit to it!
Dr. Koether is unfit to be a professor as she uses her personal issues as aggression towards her students. She is clearly miserable with life. Nothing further to say positive. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Dr. Koether's very old school, and sometimes can be condescending, but overall is a decent professor. 2 exams, 2 assignments, 5 quizzes, and a final. The 1st assignment and exam were rough but everything else was fine. She tells you exactly what's going to be on the exams so just study. Topics were boring. Class wasn't too bad. Attendance is bonus.
This is an online class. Nothing bad i can say about Dr. Koether. She answered the emails quick, very informative when you ask question. The class itself is easy, she does kritik which i hated from the beginning but i got used to ,quizzes and final exam. Very easy to get an A if you have the book! Good luck !
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! There is homework every night with little to no help at all. To get a good grade, you have to be willing to sacrifice everything other than this class, and you will have to attend constant tutoring unless you already have extensive background in chemistry. She is nice, but I would not recommend.
Better than average professor. Can go a little fast in lecture sometimes but there is a lot of content to cover so this is understandable; just means you have to pay attention and take good notes. Grading policy is pretty generous with grade replacements available and some low grades dropped. Can be tough but that's just the nature of the course.
She was quite quick.
Please don't take her, if she's the last available just take chem next semester! Really mean, goes really fast through lectures and working problems. I will say I liked her grading system, but you literally can't see your grade throughout the whole semester. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'll miss quizzes, no makes-ups doesn't matter situation.
I am a Biochemistry major and love Chemistry she made reconsider my major. Constantly gets made when you ask questions. She goes through everything super fast and expects you to already know everything. Always talks about her granddaughter and waste time that we could have used. I repeat DO NOT TAKE HER IF SHE IS THE LAST CHEM TEACHER AVAILABLE.
I'm not going to lie, this is a tough professor. However, it's kind of bittersweet. She goes hard in class, but its beneficial because the tests seemed easier than the actual classwork. Attend office hours and study the textbook material before class, it will help a lot. She's a great professor and she is going to make sure you know the material.
She cares about her students. She has take-home homework and quizzes after every lecture but is very helpful when it comes to the exam. She also reviews past exams in class (they are incredibly similar to the actual exam).
If you did not take Chemistry in high school, then you might consider taking her, because she does assure you learn. However, if you don't like chemistry, or already know it, this professor will eat 10 hours of your time a week doing monotonous homework.
She provided many resources for us to use. We had classwork, homework(worksheets), and quizzes(homework) everyday. Her power points are literally the textbook. I thought this course was pretty hard.
She did a very good job explaining the material and provided many examples that she worked through with the class so that material was understood. Lots of opportunities to get good grades. Attendance is very important though.
Although this course was difficult, Dr. Koether did her part in ensuring our success. There is tons and tons of practice, which is graded, but this provides us with quick feedback. Doing the homework is paramount, because the exams are often very similar to it. However, you need to read the textbook or consult outside sources to be successful.
She gives a lot of classwork and homework, but that makes it so that you do not have to study too much for the test. Overall good lectures and will answer any questions you have.
I took her 2 years ago. We called her "Killer Koether". She would scream the whole class period about not missing her class and cheating. She would stop mid-lecture, read an email from a student who said they were sick and then say, "I don't care if you're giving birth, you're not missing class!" She had to give extra credit just to get attendance.
The entirety of this class is answering questions in the textbook, and then grading your peers submissions. There are quizzes for each chapter and a big review article that your have the whole semester to work on. It can be an easy A but you have to be strict on not missing due dates because she will not reopen anything.
Worst professor. Don't take for summer classes I don't recommend that since she gives lots of homework, daily home quizzes/ class quizzes, and weekly exams. It was really tough for me because it is a course that goes fast, and she makes it really hard! Wish you good luck if you going to take her.
Professor Koether is a very knowledgeable professor and does a good job at showing her passion for chemistry. However, the way she teaches some concepts makes too many assumptions about her students. She often would teach the class like she would a grad student class, which, paired with her speed of lecturing, left many concepts lacking.
Professor Koether runs a challenging but rewarding class. Lots of daily work, but it prepares you well for the exams. Using unstuck study and the free textbook made studying more efficient.
