Took this course in term 2 in the summer. Marina is a great prof: really kind, easily accessible via email (seems to reply everyday). As long as you pay attention in class and try to understand the concepts/questions/clickers taught in class, I don't think you'll fail. Do the practice online Q/textbook section Q if you want an A+
Great prof, definitely cares for the students in her class, easily approachable both after class and via email. Some basic work is needed to do well in her class, but a high mark is absolutely possible just by going to class and doing some practice work and the clickers.
Dr. Litinskaya is a very caring prof and her slides contains most of the key information that you need for each chapter. Although the lecture materials in class may be quite difficult to comprehend, make sure you have pre-read the textbook, then you won't find it too confusing.
She can come off as unconfident in her answers at times. She does care for students and is nice to us, but she can sound mean by accident. Her in class worksheets were very helpful, and many exam questions were based off of them.
Professor Litinskaya is very caring and helpful. Although her lectures are quite hard to comprehend sometimes, if you do the pre-readings, it is quite straightforward and gives you a lot of tips. If I get a chance to take any of her classes, I would definitely take it.
PHYS 158 is very hard and dense, yet Prof. Litinskaya explained everything with great clarity and answers questions well both in class, on piazza, and during office hours. She also posts lecture notes and hand written strategies. Midterms are hard but her lectures will prepare you well.
Good with content, the content is just extremely difficult. At times you will feel like you are flying through it. Need to self-study and do all homework and stay ahead of classes to do well. And you need to practice a lot.
Kind, approachable, helpful, and always willing to see students. She knows her subject well, but isn't good at teaching it. She's a little unsure of herself at times and her lectures can get super boring - be prepared to learn on your own. Midterm and final were hard but manageable. She's the nicest and most understanding professor I've ever had.
She's nice but does not know how to teach. I thought I was just bad at physics until I sat in another profs lecture and that was when I realized that the prof DOES matter. I would not recommend taking the class with her unless you can self learn concepts and/or grasp them easily.
She has a very very thick Russian accent. And she holds the microphone up to her face so its basically ASMR physics for an hour and a half which WILL make you sleep. Great prof, the final is not weighted by topic, but by how long each topic was discussed. This would have been important to know before the final :((((
Dr. Litinskaya is a very kind professor, who was always available to answer my questions outside of class. I struggled a bit with the course at the beginning of the term, but if you recognize that you need help early on, she is very helpful.
Very nice professor, often likes to crack jokes. I love how involved her lectures are, it's just like my Calculus class in high school; We'd get a booklet every unit and work through it in every class while taking a few lecture notes on the side. This teaching style is for small classrooms, yet she makes it work for a lecture hall which is awesome!
She is very sweet and calming, sometimes too calming, but she explains everything you need to know and is pretty good. Course overall isn't too difficult but she can explain everything.
Dr. Litinskaya was a great prof for PHYS101. She came to class prepared and willing to answer questions, and the worksheets provided in class were a great resource that really help you succeed in the course. She was clear in explaining how to solve the problems, which is all you really need for this course. She is very kind an easily approachable.
Amazing professor, who works hard to make things easier for students, the worksheets clear your concept well. She is kind, caring and accessible outside class.
Marina is a GEM and has the cutest russian accent. I think hearing her say "RRRHO" every day was the highlight of my semester
Very kind, approachable and explains concepts well. If you generally understand the concepts no need to read all of the EdX textbook stuff- takes up a lot of time- but review it if you have trouble with lectures.
I did well in the course, but not because of this professor. She's a really lovely person, but her explanations are difficult to follow (she's not the best at explaining concepts or how to solve problems.) I would take PHYS 100 with a different prof, if possible.
Best professor I had in first year. Actually listens to the feedback from students when she's going too fast, goes over plenty of in-depth examples in class, and is available outside of class if you need extra help.
Dr. Litinskaya is an amazing professor. She is so caring towards her students and is very accessible outside of class to answer any questions or doubts. Her lectures are very well structured and she does a lot of examples in class and goes through everything step-by-step to make sure everyone understands.
Dr. Litinskaya is an amazing professor. She explains physics topics in this course with a good amount of detailing and makes it really easy and fun.
I really enjoyed Litiskaya's clear lectures and explanations of the content. She demonstrates key skills needed for the midterms and finals for you to succeed, and since the questions she does are quite similar to the exam, if you go to class, you will definitely do well. She answers questions clearly and promptly and expectations are clear.
Great in class polls, explains all the solutions and concepts
Dr. Litinskaya is an amazing prof, and made the topics very clear to understand during the lectures. She also replies to any questions, even on Piazza extremely quickly. Really enjoyed her teaching!
Honestly I think her lectures and material are much better than how the textbook explains things by including a lot of problems we go over together which are super helpful. You can see that she tries to prepare us well for quizzes and the final to the point where as long as you attend lectures, youll be fine.
Dr. Litinskaya's lectures made me enjoy physics more than I ever thought I would! She was very engaging in the online format, having lots of polls and even demonstrations using her face cam. As long as you understand everything covered in the lectures and tutorials you can do super well! The examinations were very fair.
The course is really well designed and delivered. The course information at the end all pieces together like a Lego kit The teaching was great, it made complicated ideas easy to understand and easy to follow. There is almost no ambiguity or confusion when watching the lectures, simply attending lectures and doing homework almost guarantee success.
I love Dr. Litniskaya so much! She is such a kind, caring prof and she always explains things very well and at a nice pace. Whenever I go to PHYS 170, I instantly feel so calm because I know that whatever she explains is going to make sense. Would 100% recommend. I'm gonna miss this class :(
She must be the best professor i have ever met in my first year. I can follow her lecture easily. Love her lecture. Hope i can take her lecture again if I got the chance to do so!!!!!!!!
Professor Litinskaya's lectures are well paced, clear, and always affirmed with great examples. Outside of class/lectures, she goes above and beyond to help students who need support.
She taught this course in second term. She is great and expect what comes in the lecture to be very similar to midterms and finals (I know there s not always time but try to do her extra practice worksheets they complete her lectures' examples). Also, very helpful if you have questions definitely reach out to her !!
Lectures were amazing: well-paced, good examples that represent exams and very clear. Her notes were so good and well organized that I didn't even want/need to write my own. I never read the textbook once because her lectures/notes always covered everything.
Probably one of the best profs in first year. Very clear and easy to follow lectures. Extremely solid prof
Great professor and great course. I dropped PHYS 158 for PHYS 118 and this is a way more enjoyable experience. Her lectures and tutorials are very organized and she posts detailed solutions to worksheets and tutorials. Quizzes and exams were very doable and not too difficult.
Her lecture is so good. make sure understand everything in the worksheet. I got 100%
Great attitude towards students, very accommodating. Had a great experience.
Great lectures, very accessible via office hours, overall great prof and well structured class
Marina is such a good prof. It was a bit hard to keep up during the lecture since there was much to cover, but all the lectures were recorded, so I rewatched them at my own pace. She is very caring, and her office hours are amazing.
Marina is such a caring prof, she really wants her students to succeed. Her lectures are thorough and understandable, and very accessible after class (recorded and posted with both unannotated and annotated notes). Lectures were fast-paced as a result of the dense course content, but she still managed to explain all concepts clearly and well
Literally the best first year eng prof (up there with Dierker). So kind, caring and funny. Cares SO much about her students actually learning, and faults herself if we don't understand, not the students. Super accessible outside of class, walks you through EVERY problem in class, and promotes engagement. Absolute pleasure learning from her!
For engineer students, her teaching can be refreshing. However, if you're in the other faculties and physics is your weakest subject, you will get lost. The terms she uses are very difficult to understand for people who aren't used to learning physics. She seems nice and she is often on Piazza, but often her hints for homework don't give any leads.
I had Prof. Litinskaya for PHYS 170 and PHYS 118, and she's easily my favourite professor so far. She's a super clear speaker, her slides are great, and she's and very active on Piazza. I haven't finished PHYS 118 yet, but her PHYS 170 grading criteria was extremely clear and well-explained. Absolutely take her courses if you can!
Good Prof
Professor Litinskaya is one of the nicest professors I've met. She genuinely cares about her students and will do everything in her power to make students succeed. She always try to make her lectures easy to understand by explaining all the concepts clearly and walking through each problem step-by-step. Would love to have her as my professor again!
Marina is a gem. So many examples in class and they are all relevant to the homework and exams. The grading scheme in this class is terrible though. Love that 60% final.
I love Marina, she is a great lecturer for PHYS 157 and makes things clear to understand. Her lectures are never boring and overall would take her class again!
Prof Litinskaya is the best. Super engaging and enthusiastic lecturer who is friendly and receptive to all questions. 10/10 would take again.
very caring prof and has good lectures. Open to questions in class, after class, office hours, on piazza (basically anywhere as she is very available and is active online).
an angel reborn.
I LOVE Litinskaya, she's like unironically funny in the best way. I had this course in the evenings and skipped the last 2 months, wrote no notes, and didn't watch the lectures yet still ended with an A. PHYS 100 is independent of the instructor, BUT for the few times I did go, Litinskaya was very easy to follow! She's actually godsent
I loved her! Awesome prof! There were a ton of deadlines to keep track of, but there was always help if you needed it.
A great prof with very clear lecture and slides! No issues with content delivery for this course. Is friendly and will answer all of your questions. The course is structured that requires a lot of work, but it prepares you well for exams.
Dr. Litinskaya is a kind and caring prof. She always stays after class to answer student's questions. Her lectures are clear, with many examples that she walks through. She is funny and makes learning difficult topics fun and easy to understand. She covered every topic in detail. I learned very well through both her lectures and homework.
Professor Litinskaya is probably the sweetest human being alive. Her lectures are great and she explains questions and concepts so very clearly. Her slides are always so detailed. She answers questions with amazing clarity too. Her lectures are fun and interactive. I know of friends with other profs in phys 100 that watched her lectures to study!
Probably one of the better few physics lecturers and definitely on the more engaging side. PHYS157 is a centralized course so one's section has no direct bearing on marks. Dr. Litinskaya is a good teacher and cares deeply about physics. Her notes are also some of the better ones provided by lecturers.
She is the best prof I've ever had during first year engineering. She would always stay after lectures to answer students' questions and often stay overtime during office hours to answer everyone's questions. She has great lecture slides and lots of organized practice worksheets on Canvas.
I was not in Dr. Litinskaya's 158 course, but I started going to her lectures halfway through the course because my prof failed to explain the concepts of this difficult course. I regret not going to her lectures earlier to gain a deeper understanding of the materials. She is the best prof of PHYS158. Opa!
Marina is the best first year physics prof! She singlehandedly is the reason I passed all 3 of my physics classes in first year engineering. Particularly for PHYS170 and PHYS158, I watched all her lecture recordings instead of going to my own profs because she explained it so much better.
You can tell how much she cares about her class. She gives AMAZING, organized, and thorough lectures. She has lots of practice integrated into each lecture. She has a super kind and fun personality and makes sure to leave plenty of space for questions, making a great learning environment. I'm sure I would have failed if I were in any other section
So amazing in PHYS 170. I really appreciated that she had examples and gave clear work that was easy to look back at. Was able to cram the entire second half of the course in the afternoon before the final thanks to her good notes
Took this class over the summer as a substitute for 158, thinking I would have an easy way out. Having a full time job and with a day's worth of summer being a week's worth in winter, time management was difficult. Litinskaya tends to go over a lot of practice problems in class, and will answer any question you may ask. Textbook will help.
She is a great professor. Her lectures are effective and she is very caring and helpful during office hours.
She is such an amazing lecturer and makes physics interesting
Marina should be at the top of your list if you are looking for a good physics professor. Engaging, fun, and always working to help you out. She explains complex topics very well, I've never been lost in one of her lectures before. Just two tips, do the reading and either look or do the week's homework questions before the lecture.
so good at teaching and made physics so interesting i changed my major to engineering
Literally my most fav prof at UBC. She was always so helpful during office hours. The only reason I didn't fail 158 was her !!
I took Phys 100 with her. Lectures are pretty much a lot of practice problems. Midterm exam was very very fair.
Professor Litinskaya is an amazing person and a great teacher. I don't think I really understood anything from my past high school physics classes but she explained the concepts very clearly and I think I genuinely learned some things from her class.
Physics was never my strong subject, nor one I was interested in, but Professor Litinskaya made it enjoyable. Her lectures were quite slow but she worked through many examples in class and explained everything in detail. Never got lost a single time during her lectures. Make sure you do your pre class reading
Best professor I had in my first year. Listens to feedback, slows down when there are questions, and makes her explanations engaging and interesting. There are tons of online resources (YouTube, textbook solutions, useful formula sheets) outside of class as well.
Litinskaya does a great job at explaining the reasons WHY certain solutions are the way that they are. As someone who is a visual learner, the models that she created in the accessible notes were really helpful. Attendance is graded, however you can miss 2 classes without being penalized. Slides are always posted, but not vids until lose to exam.
Amazing prof! Is very clear that she understands that PHYS 100 isn't a lot of eng/physics students and wants to make sure everyone feels confident in their physics knowledge. Very encouraging pre- and post-exams and available for help outside of lectures.
Prof. Litinskaya is a great professor. Clicker questions were not marked but were thought provoking and helped me prepare. Funny and good at explaining harder physics concepts.
Marina is an amazing prof. She brings great energy to the class, cares about her students. Her power points are very well formatted with links to them for each lectures, as well as the homework.
She was a very good professor and helped solve any questions that you needed help with. Only thing that took some getting used to was her accent, as it is hard to understand for the first couple classes until you get used to it. Also, she would go very slow at the easy parts and very fast at the hard ones, making it hard to understand/confusing.
Prof. Litinskaya's lectures were so organized, engaging, and helpful. As someone who never took physics in high school, I didn't have a lot of difficulty keeping up with the content, especially due to her elaborate explanations. The course is basically designed for you to pass, with tons of easy 100s.
Best prof at ubc BY FAR!! she teaches difficult courses but she has SO much practice material and her lectures are actually so engaging. 10/10 would take her again
I have taken two classes with Marina now and she is easily one of my favourite profs! Such a nice lady, lectures very well, very understanding of workloads. As someone who was a bad student (ie I didn't try very hard/didn't do homeworks/etc), it was impossible to fail her classes so long as you showed up because she makes learning so accessible.
Very engaging and detailed explanations of important concepts/theories. Cares about the success of her students and works hard to deliver good lectures and comprehensive notes. When problem solving, she likes to go through a step by step process that helps to simplify the question; Expectations for homework and exams are made clear.
Amazing prof, the best prof at UBC for first year engineering kids, saved my ass for physics 170 and 158, shes the real GOAT, watch her recordings, you wont regret it!
Amazing professor, genuinely cared so much for her students and had amazing lectures for both 158 and 170. 10/10 goat
The best prof I had this year! Marina explained all the concepts incredibly clearly during lectures and was always willing to provide extra help after class.
Solid prof! Not the best I've ever had (imo she's overrated a bit and not as clear/concise as she could be) but much better than the alternatives.
Taught the course really well and I was even playing brawl stars the majority of her lectures and still got an A+, never had to rewatch any lectures or anything. I recommend doing the extra worksheets and not falling behind though, its like 1 hour of extra work a week.
Incredible prof. This course is challenging, but Marina makes everything super easy to understand. Marina is somewhat sassy in lectures (iClickers), and it's quite entertaining to watch. Before tests, Marina gives some inspirational words before we begin, and it honestly made me feel better while writing.
Marina is awesome, the class is just difficult
Genuinely one of the best profs I have ever had. She will take material that is very difficult and unintuitive, and then boil them down to very explainable and simple concepts. Her lectures are always engaging, paces properly, and exciting. Was always so happy to go to her classes
Undisputed GOAT of first year engineering. I started attending her lectures after doing poorly on MT1. Then I got 20% higher on MT2 despite the class average for MT2 being 10% lower than MT1.
She is the best 1 year prof I had and her classes are honestly a relief after stressful chem lab coming to her classes was so nice! Her teaching is amazing and makes the course content simplified and understandable
Dr. Litinskaya is a wonderful woman and explains things very clearly. However, the lectures are very boring and very few people actually pay attention to them the whole time. If you need help she's great, but if you don't, things get boring quickly. Some of the exams also get kinda sketchy on the questions but generally follow the homework well.
For PHYS301, good class
This course was very difficult and I essentially had to self-study using the lecture notes last year. Marina may be kind at first but becomes rude quite quickly after I had to correct her on a mistake she made. I don't get all the hype around her. I am putting this as a warning for all the 1st years who are taking 158 with her this coming semester.
Dr. Litinskaya is my queen. She teaches the material well and really emphasizes what is important to remember. The exams are easy to prepare for as the FRQ's are similar to past and practice ones. Also I love her accent and she's super funny.
