Pay Attention to detail, Read ques carefully or you will miss them
His tests are hard. Read questions carefully
Nice guy, Tests are hard, questions on quiz u learn after u get it wrong
Holy Lord, this class sucked. I pity anyone who still has to take it.
Quizzes and tests are very tricky. The hardest classes I have taken.
Great teacher, just lots of homework and rough tests. learn the stuff though
Tests are a bear. Actually, I'd rather mess w/ a bear than the tests.
Buckle downYou will learn, but he weeds out the weak. Do homework!!
Quizzes tough, tests even tougher
GOod proff, class is SO hard, but i learn alot
Tough class but he made it tougher then it needed to be by not being available.
The Devil.
Best Acc prof! Take him if possible!!!
Good prof. He makes class hard, but you learn alot in the process.
Very hard...Almost impossible to relate his teaching to the book.
nice guy but tests stink. Steer away from the man
oh my horrible!
This guy can NOT teach Introductory ACC. Read the book, don't go to class.

He's a nice guy, be he's hard to follow. Avoid if possible
terrible teacher avoid do not take him you will hate him

see by the ratings.. he's good at 300 level classes, can't teach entry level
What is he talking about? He is defintely misleading. Hard class
This guy is not good at all. He can't teach the class, learn on your own!!!
Great Prof to take if you dont want to go to class just read the book
No Comments
Very fast paced class he is vague at times.
terrible prof
Can't Understand, Talks to fast, Tests hard, jumps around, confusing, aweful!!!
I started off strong, then struggled and there is no guidance on his part. BADDD

Doesn't understand that 212 is the BEGINING accounting class
He can't teach, he would be better as a consulor
He is a good accountant, but a bad teacher.
the guy just isn't a very good teacher. smart, bad teacher
Just horrible......seriously dont take him....take danko
has no clue that he as the duty of teaching intro. accounting
Very analytical, somewhat obsessive compulsive, can't teach
Course has does not flow at all. it jumps around to many different concepts of accounting. Very difficult to follow.
he's one of the reasons I decided not to major in accounting - if that says anything
Great teacher. Made me want to go into accounting. You'll need to read before class. He just re-states what the book says and tries to make it easier. Don't go into class with a mind set that he'll teach you everything you need to know. You have to read!!
If you read the material and do the assignments you will get an A,Project was easy.
Can't understand him, and the class is boring but he will take the time to help you.
Fairly easy class, however very boring. Final exam is 50 of the 250 review questions he puts on blackboard. If you have to take this class, try to look for a more interesting prof, but don't worry if you get him.
not good. do not take...bottom line
Can choose which assignments to be graded. Closely match what will be tested. Homework and tests were graded fairly. Some of the multiple choice can be hard, but he curves those. Explains much of the material in class. One of the better profs at GVSU
If you are a lazy student, don't sign up for him. If you do the assigned readings and homework problems you will see that it is very easy. Its college. Great professor.
avoid this man, going to class does not help one bit, read the book, and you'll be fine, huge curver because no one understands what he's trying to teach
This class was so incredibly boring that I couldn't stand it. And the accent didn't help. The man seems nice, but I don't think he was meant to teach. Just dropped this class
Great prof. You have to work hard in the class, keep up on readings and homework and you'll do fine. Prof is helpful if you ask, makes you work hard and think a lot. Good class & prof.
pretty much goes over homework and then goes on and on about nothing - if you can teach yourself then you will do fine, if not find another prof
Not clear at all. Cannot understand his accent. He talks to you like you are an accounting genius. Don't recommend. Wait for a different prof before taking him.
A nice guy, but class was difficult because it was not clear at all and info he gave for tests was not right, tough class
In class, he really doesn't do a lot of teaching, he basically reads the powerpoint slides and gets off track a lot. If you do the homework, read, and study a lot you can do well, but expect to teach yourself from the book.
He is probably a good accountant, but he is not a good teacher. Plan on teaching yourself most of the class. He does not communicate well at all.
He's a nice enough guy, but cannot teach at all. Thinks you know anything and everything about accounting. I'm now reconsidering my major...if that says anything.
Tough. Tough. Thought a 73 was an outstanding class average. Tough.
He is not easy, but is helpful. Be prepared to come ready to go to work everyday. You will be amazed at what you can learn from him.
Bar none, the worst professor Grand Valley has ever employed. I am weeping now, just thinking about this man.
Subject material is very difficult. I wouldn't blame the professor. He is very concerned about your career and wants to help. I enjoyed his class.
There is a lot of material to cover in a very short time in this class. It's not really the prof's fault that the class is difficult. He tries to make the class easy, with points for things other than tests.
Kicks my behind on a daily basis. Nothing better than a 65 average, at least according to him. Nice guy, bad professor.

This class is impossible, you can study all you want and it won't help because his exam problems are not like any you have done from the book. He scribbles on the board, doesn't do a good job of explaining topics. Read the Book and do the exercises!
Doesn't explain topics well, seems to teach to those who already "know" the material. Final grades are curved, which was really needed. Wouldn't recommend taking him.
All i have to say is thank God i passed this class and don't have to take it again. If you have him, i STRONGLY suggest taking someone else or waiting a semster if you don't want your GPA to go down and if you want to understand anything.
Very nice guy! He is more than willing to help you out and give you advice on your career. Very hard material. The only way to survive this class is by studying before you go to class everyday. Read the material and do ALL the exercies & you will be ok
No Comments
Class does not start for another 4 weeks and he already gave us chapters to read and assignments.
Knows the material very well, but he sure can't teach it!!!
Terrible teacher. GV needs to overhaul its accounting department faculty
Good prof, makes you study, but you really learn a lot in the class. also, very helpful during his office hours and willing to help you one-on-one.
Bad professor. On top of a tough subject, he's of no help. Doesn't explain things well, and bores you with his lectures. You have to be dedicated in order to do well in this class. Get someone else!
I thought that the class was alright. I unfortunately learned more from reading on my own than from going to class. He is a nice guy, but doesn't present the material very well. He talks the entire class period, but I feel like I walk out each day with nothing. The class takes time and motivation.
You know I don't know what everyone's problem is. This is an upper level class and it shouldn't be spoon fed to you. This professor is very knowledgable and helpful. I do agree that his lectures are dry, but if you apply yourself and are dedicated to learning you will do just fine.
His lectures are fairly dry and seem unplanned. The book is the key for passing the exams. His lectures, for the most part, do not pertain to the exams at all. Study the textbook and just review the lecture notes. Would not take again.
Hard class, but if you see him outside class, he'll help you out.
Dubruine is OK. Our class was really small so that probably affects my rating. He was helpful as long as I or someone in class asked for clarification but if no one asked questions then his lectures would not be helpful.
Debruine is just not a good professor. He tries but he is not talented when it comes to, you know, teaching anything. His accent takes getting used to but is tolerable. READ THE BOOK. It's your only avenue to an A. He doesn't write his own tests so he barely knows what is going to be on those. He is just an overall underqualified professor.
Just plain bad.
He's not a great teacher....and he's hard to understand at first....his test are straight from the book and he doesn't teach from the book....and he likes to ramble on about nothing...if you can get someone else....do try
this class would be awesome if you were a rabbit...then it would be easier to follow all the dang rabbit trails he goes on. its really cool how the exams have nothing to do with what he talks about. i would rather set my hair on fire then take another class with him. however, outside of class he is really nice. ask for a study guide.
Hard prof!! His lectures are nothing but ramble. He tests right from the book and is very specific. Know all details!!
He is a really nice guy, but gets a bad rap since the material is extremely difficult. He will help you if you let him. I spent quite a bit of time outside of class chatting with him, and did very well. He will help you get a good grade and pass the class if you let him. However, expect a lot of work outside of class to do well. I mean a lot!
very, very poor teaching skills
He was very hard to understand at first and once I learned what he wanted us to study for the exams it wasn't hard. You have to do the exercises he "assigns" for the review because 75% of his m.c. problems come from knowing the exercises. And you have to know them for the "essay" part. Just do that and you can do well...good luck!
Course material is very difficult to understand and this professor does little to clear things up. Lectures were based on conceptual ideas and very few examples were demonstrated in class. Lectures seemed very irrelavant and thus students must teach themselves. Aviod this professor.
A nice guy, but lectures too much on concepts and doesn't do a lot of examples. It's a tough class and this guy just makes it harder and more confusing.
Pretty hard class. I'm not sure if any professor could teach this class in a way to make it easy.
A nice and very smart guy who means well, but is far too analytical and narrow-focused to be effective at teaching. Seems to focus far too much on the details without touching on the big picture or practical application of what he's teaching. Spends hours on formulas without doing in class examples. Only prof. for this class so good luck!
This is THE WORST prof I have ever had. GVSU should be ashamed to have given him tenure. He does not teach..and 311 is the hardest class in the program, you cannot teach yourself. Ended up failing, dropping, and taking with a different prof. Take my advice...avoid him!!
He is an ok person, but he is definitely not a teacher. Basically disregard everything he teaches or says; literally it's more beneficial not to listen during class, only turn Hw in. Study the book chapters THOROUGHLY, look at the exercises. Pay attention to the the review guides, and study the whole topics that are described. Good luck it sucks.
Worst ACCT Prof I've ever had. Teaching style made concepts unclear, and rushed through with few examples, leaving the entire class behind. And then he was "disappointed" when we had class averages of 50% on the exams. Glad I took the W
TERRIBLE PROF.!!! Avoid him if you can. He is from another country so he tries to speak perfect English which makes the lectures sometimes hard to understand. His examples do not help and JUST STUDY THE BOOK!!
Extremely difficult material with very little demonstration.
Listen to the warnings. He is a nice guy and is a fair grader on papers, but his tests are nightmare. He is "angry" when more than half the class fails half the M.C. questions. Maybe you are doing something wrong? It is a tough class, but he made it more confusing. Teach yourself, read everything, do the problems. This is from a 3.5 gpa student.
Professor Debruine is a good professor. He is more compassionate than most!He offers to come in on his days off to have a study session before each test. His class is based more on test scores than anything else, but he does make it so that you can do well if you try, and if you care about the class and put time into your work and ask for his help.
Hard to understand and difficult tests
Marinus is a nice guy, but NOT a good teacher. He's very knowledgable in the material, but again, NOT great at helping you learn it. Tests are very hard and his "hint sheet" is a joke. Study the book and pay attention to the CPA exam review questions following the chapters. Homework assignments were little to no help in learning towards the exams.
Excellent prof! Its a tough class, but DeBruine is helpful throughout the process. Study hard, work through the CPA exam practice problems, pay attention in class and you'll be fine.
Debruine is nice guy and a pretty good prof. The material itself is very tough and he does a good job of explaining it. The exams are very hard but there's plenty of points from online homework and the project to boost your grade. He's dutch but his accent isn't too bad. There's 3 exams, a research project and presentation and online homework.
Classes are hard to follow, and don't seem relevant to exam. Exams are very difficult. Gives a review sheet that he follows from the textbook, but then half of the exam is from the project done in class. Gives you a chance to "buy" a formula for part of a question for a one point deduction; I suggest you use it, if you do end up taking this class.
The class has the potential to be a interesting one, however Prof DeBruine wastes that opportunity. He is hard to follow and not clear on expectations for the projects. He teaches way theoretical that makes it hard. Many people just sit and class and don't say anything because he makes it a waste of time to go to class.
Unfortunately, this is a mandatory class. I did not learn much of anything and was unclear on many of the assignments. Many of my classmates and myself felt very confused during and after exams. Many acronyms were not explained in class, just thrown up on the board.
ACC 311 is a hard class regardless, but Debruine struggles hitting it home with explaining topics. He really does mean well, but he is so hard to follow when he is writing notes on the board. I just looked over example handouts to take exams. He basically says turn everything that is required and you will get the minimum of a C-
People don't give him credit. If you're having trouble (like I was) go to his office, he helps you until you understand. His speaking sometimes gets confusing but he will repeat if necessary. Take notes as he will reference them! His exam reviews and suggested homework? DO THEM if you learn them you will do alright on exams, if not you will fail
Clarity in lectures and in class problems was severely lacking. After a few weeks I stopped taking notes in class and learned close to nothing despite trying to pay attention. 99% of what I learned was from reading the textbook, doing connect problems, and textbook problems. Do not depend on DeBruine to teach you. You have to take initiative.
I don't know why people dislike DeBruine. He is easily the best prof for 310 and 311. These classes are just difficult classes, but he makes it much easier. He is very knowledgeable and knows what happening in the accounting world (GAAP updates and whatnot). Tests are kind of difficult. His accent isn't bad. Take him for your intermediate classes.
While he may be easier than other Intermediate teachers I did not learn much from him. His lectures were all over the place and just briefly talked about topics here and there. You are responsible for teaching yourself. With I class like this it would be better to have a teacher who explains things more. Decent grade but not enough learning.
Professor Debruine is easily the worst professor I have had so far being at GVSU. He means well and seems like a nice person but the class lectures are very hard to follow. He doesn't seem to touch on the important material but just rambles the whole class period. He is a very tough grader and the exams are very hard. Take another prof if possible.
Cant say it enough how important reading the book, doing the selected exercises, and studying the test examples are for doing well in this class. Other than the tests (300 out of 700 points), the project and cases are graded fair. Overall, Do the CPA questions, online quizzes from Connect, and exercises to help understand the topic completely. GL!
One of the worst professors I've had a Grand Valley, he is a nice guy personally, but does not teach the material well. I had to teach myself before taking the exams to get a decent grade. Homework and exams are the biggest portion of your grade, exams are challenging but he gives you a hints on what will be on the test. Overall, bad class.
There are no words I can use to adequately prepare you for the horror you are about to embark on with Debruine as your professor. Be prepared to teach yourself complicated accounting topics and get ready to sit through confusing and misguided lectures. May the force be with you.
Very hard grader. Questions on exams are CPA level and exams are short so losing a few points greatly affects your grades. Easy to get full credit on projects and homework as long as you do them which will ultimately save your grade. Nice guy and clearly knows his stuff but sometimes seems to forget that his students are undergraduates.
DeBruine is a really nice guy and does want you to do well, but this class is tough. Class consisted of 700 ponits. 300 were tests, the rest were HW/project points, but you will most likely receive almost all of those points. If you come to class and show that you care and are trying, he will pass you with the C- you need.
The class is tough no matter who you take it with. But DeBruine will make sure you pass, as long as you do the work. His exams have an average of like a 50%, with a curve. But don't panic! As long as you do the rest of the work with genuine effort, his grading scale is designed so that you'll pass. My best exam grade was like a 58% and I passed.
Hard hard hard class no matter who you have. Saying lots of connect hw is an understatement. Utilize the hint sheets early on and you will be fine. DeBruine is the best option for the class.
I've taken this class twice, had DeBruine the second time. Definitely my top choice. His lectures might seem a little irrelevant/confusing, but he makes up for it with reasonable homework expectations and a solid curve for tests. You'll have to study a ton outside of class to understand the material either way, so take DeBruine
Professor Debruine is a nice professor. This is an extremely hard class and requires lots of studying outside of class. His lectures can be confusing at times but he goes over the material and shows examples. His tests are extremely hard so go over the hint sheets when studying. Make sure to do the homework and the other projects.
This is a hard course regardless of who you have. This is easily one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Chapters are 50 pages. DeBruine was a decent teacher; his lectures were fast and covered a lot of content, but what else is he supposed to do with the volume of content he's supposed to cover. HW is a lot, and tests are harder. Good luck.
310 is a tough class but Debruine didn't make it any easier.... He excepts you to just read the chapter in the textbook before class and know how to do it. His lectures are so disorganized and confusing. My notes are just random numbers that I don't know where they came from because he goes so fast.
He's a nice man, but professors are meant to be good at their jobs. He is the worst professor I've ever had in the history of my academic career. Sloppy writing, very unorganized, just jumps write into notes that you don't know if you should write down or not. I don't recommend taking his class. Be wary of what you do.
ACC 311 is just as hard if not harder than 310. Professor DeBruine wants you to do the best you can in this class. His lectures are complicated but he hands out note sheets. Taking notes is essential. The tests are extremely hard, so be sure to use the hint sheets while studying. Do the homework and try hard on the tests and you will survive.
This is a hard class (which is why many people give him bad reviews) but DeBruine is your best option. He always makes himself available to help (especially before exams) and he tells you what to expect on exams. He is a kind professor and cares a lot about his students. Show him you are working hard and he will get you through it! Take him!
Prof DeBruine was very nice and caring for his students and offered help whenever it was needed, homework assignments were a breeze. Read the topics and do the study assignments BEFORE class so you can follow what he teaches, being very familiar with the material before lecture really helps you follow his lectures. Also had 3 tough exams.
Professor Debruine is a great accounting professor. He really cares about each student and wants everyone to pass. He makes himself available outside of class for review sessions and has a good mix of projects, homework, and tests that are not too much. His lectures may be all over the place, but pay attention and come to class, and you'll do well!
Prof. DeBruine cares, but if you care about grades, do NOT take his class. Every test we took had a 65% average, including the curve. After everyone failed the first test, in the next class he did the math on the board and said "See? You all are still capable of getting a C." If you go to class, study hard, and do ALL homework, you might get a B.
Professor DeBruine is a hard professor but is willing to help in any way that he can. He gives lots of easy homework for points that add up and help your grade in the end. He helps students to make sure that they pass his class
This class was very tough with DeBruine. He seems to care about students, however, this class is difficult with a lack of explanation. Most of the time I ended up teaching myself. He doesn't go off the textbook very much, so you have to watch lectures. However, the lectures really don't clarify anything as he doesn't explain or give clear answers.
Do not fall behind! Pay attention to his lectures and don't skip lecture or recording!
This class sucked, but overall DeBruine isn't your worst option. You end up teaching yourself everything, but he curves every exam by 20-30 points. The amount of work isn't super overwhelming for this class, either. There's a semester long group project, but it was fairly easy. He really cares about his students, and won't let you fail his class.
HE IS THE WORST PROF YOU WILL HAVE IN THIS PROGRAM. HE HAS ZERO IDEA ON HOW TO ACTUALLY LECTURE. He makes his own handouts that are boarder line gibberish. The tests are the hardest part about this class and you will be teaching yourself everything. he makes GVSUs program look like a joke as he is the ONLY option for intermediate 2. just the worst.
Professor Debruine is a very caring guy. I believe he knows everything about accounting but I found it very difficult to actually learn from him. His lectures seemed very scattered and I felt like attending class did not help teach me very many concepts. Overall, he is very understanding and just wants to see his students succeed.
DeBruine wasn't the worst. He generously curves exam grades and provides good direction for the semester long project (easy). However with that being said, the lecture handouts were terribly messy and hard to follow. the Exams were very difficult, but he is open to changes. You will end up having to teach yourself via the textbook, Connects, etc.
Lectures leave much to be desired. Questions are often not thoroughly answered in ways that are clear and concise for undergrad students. Exams are the toughest out of any course I have taken to this point. With that said, he means well, is a good person, and is highly knowledgable. Know that if you study hard youll do okay.
He is the worst professor I've had in my 146 credits of classes. His lectures/lecture packets are so disorganized to the point that it looks like they were written by Martians. In my ACC 310 and I learned more about accounting in 1 week than I've learned with Debruine's 311 this entire semester.
The worst prof I have had at GV. Doesn't provide answer keys for studying so you never know correct material. Notes and lectures were so unorganized that going to class made me more confused. You'll have to teach yourself everything, he also blames students for not trying enough.
ACC 311 is just a TOUGH class and when students struggle they blame the prof. But DeBruine makes himself accessible for his students to get extra help, grades heavily on a curve, and gives several EC assignments. His handouts are complicated but if you follow along they make sense. Dont get behind, pay attention, and ask for help when you need it.
Only option for ACC 311, which is the hardest undergrad accounting class you have to take. That being said this class is very hard and demands a lot of work. His handouts are very confusing for his lectures and are often hard to stay on track with what he is saying. This class is a grind and many people drop the class because of this
The only reason this prof isn't getting a 1 is I somehow got an A in this course. Lectures were confusing, I was genuinely angry for attending class every time but you have to because he teaches differently than textbook. However, he does provide a TON of extra credit because most people don't pass the exams. PLEASE take someone else if you can.
Prof Debruine makes himself very accessible to students, with plenty of opportunities for tutoring sessions and extra credit. He also curves exams pretty heavily . Ask for help, stay engaged, and he will make sure you pass. I feel he just gets a bad rep because the material is difficult. Be prepared to put a lot of time and effort into this class!
This is an incredibly difficult class no matter who teaches it, but Marinus does his best to teach extremely dry and complicated material. He really wanted you to succeed and did everything he could to help. Exams are hard, but fair in comparison of what you go over. Lectures, grading, and communication were clear and concise. Would take again.
He is a very caring and responsive professor. He is very available outside of class and responds very quickly. His teaching style was not my favorite and his outlines had a lot of filler information. The class is very test heavy and the tests are difficult but doable but curved, but he wouldn't tell the right answer unless you had it right.
Easy class if you put the time in. Rambles in his videos but if you just skip the rambling and focus on the example questions you'll be good plus he aways makes himself available outside of class for meetings.
