Professor Avalos class helped me learn a lot about research, rhetoric, and writing that I didnt learn in high school. Theres a lot of homework and writing drafts, peer reviews but he is ok with late work as long as you do It. Always willing to talk and listen. I had a hard time this semester but he was understanding and helped me pass. Take him!
He is amazing. You will love him.
Professor Mario was amazing. If I could have him for all 4 years I would. He takes time to get to know about his students and cares about them. Gives you a lot of freedom for projects and class work, and very understanding and forgiving. Has fun assignments and engages with his students. Always had a good time in this class, you won't regret it.
Professor Avalos was a passionate and compassionate professor with a noticeably vast knowledge of his field. His voice was majestic and soft like angels singing in harmony. With flexible and accommodating office hours, every student felt as though they were heard and cared for. 10/10 would recommend.
Mario Avalos was a wonderful professor to have. He made sure that the class was always comfortable and engaged. There is no way you can fail this class unless you dont try at all. We had several group projects which allowed the class to get to know each other creating a safe space where you wanted to share your work and learn. BEST PROFESSOR!!!!
If you can take this class with Professor Avalos, do it. This class was incredibly easy and he made the course very interesting. He is extremely flexible with assignments and even gives students their own creative freedom which I liked. Definitely recommend him!
This class is an easy A if you do all your assignments. He assigns about one per week. He's flexible and understanding; accepts late with no penalty. Theres 3 major papers. Prompts are fun and creative, you can write about what you want. He grades on time with good feedback. No complaints! Take him, trust
professor mario is the best!! he's so kind, understanding, and always willing to work with you! he gives everyone creative liberty and always makes class engaging and fun! the prompts are fun, and he's super accessible outside of class. he doesn't give penalties w/ late work either. id take him every year if i could. highly recommend!!
Extremely nice and willing to work with his students if they dont understand something
Prof Mario is the best!! He truly makes an effort to get to know his students. I loved his class because of how interesting he makes it and the creative freedom he gives you. He's super accessible outside of class and willing to help you with late work. If I could take him each year, I would 100% Definitely take him!!
Writing was not my favorite subject before this class. Still isnt but I enjoyed the assignments Mario gave us. I was able to talk about things I like like music albums and movies while learning how to apply those skills to other sources like articles and books. I feel I improved a lot in my writing. 10/10 would take him again for any class.
Professor Avalos enjoys seeing students in class; he is very accessible outside of class, replies to emails quickly, and provides helpful feedbacks. He's not a tough grader; there's three major projects and 1-2 assignments every week. I would take him again in future ENC courses without a doubt. 10/10
Amazing professor , his class is very easy just do your work and pay attention. He's super nice and understanding I definitely recommend taking his class.
Honestly very kind professor, allows creative writing and loves to interact with the class! Highly recommend taking this course with this professor! Thank you Professor Mario.
Professor Avalos was very kind and accessible. Your grade is entirely based off the 4 major essays you take throughout the course. Very simple and easy work! No tests or exams just the projects and assignments.
Professor Avalos was overall a great teacher, I really enjoyed his class most of the time and he always made us feel welcomed. He gives off peaceful vibes and he lets us speak freely about things we're interested in, he's a very cool dude & I hope to have him for 1102
Professor Avalos is a great instructor who wants to see his students succeed. Class work is easy, just stay involved in his lessons. He also gives you a lot of freedom with most assignments and projects. This class is definitely worth taking.
Took him in Spring of 2023, genuinely one of the nicest professors I have ever had. Super easy to talk with and very understanding over late work. 10/10 would recommend
He was honestly one of the best professors I ever had in my entire life. He cares about his student's success and is 100% great. I would take him again!
Best prof ever. He really cares ab his students. He makes the classroom really comfortable and accessible. There were a couple writing assignments due every week and 3 major essays which he walks you thru. Nothing crazy but I would take him a million times again. Hes lenient with his grading and provides great feedback.
You better take him. I'm sorry but you will not find a better professor. He's great because he cares, so show you care too. There's a major project that's done throughout the course, but it's split into sections to make it easier. He isn't a tough grader, and he provides thoughtful and open-minded feedback. He's also super lenient with late work.
From the very first class Mario tries getting to your level and gets to know you. Never really had a professor like that. Likes hearing people partcipate and share their writing. Lot of group work so you get to know your classmates and make friends. A lot of busy work but it all helps with the big projects in the class so not too bad. Awesome prof!
What can I say about professor Avalos? I don't think I would have passed this class without him. Not that it was super hard but I had alot come up this semester and he would check in often and let me turn things in late. Most professors won't do that. Just talk to him if you are struggling. He's so nice and understanding. Thank you so much Prof!
Beyond kind and considerate. Very understanding and wants you to succeed. Makes the assignments feel relevant & accepts multiple mediums not just essays (podcasts, powerpoints, etc). Literally the best professor I've had at FIU can't even put into words how much this class means to me. So sad he only teaches 2 classes & cant wait to take him again
Excellent professor, incredibly understanding, and never marked me late (often late). I will only say that I took his class, ENC 1930, during the summer term, and it was a lot of work, with 5+ assignments each week. They weren't tough, just time-consuming.
Took him in the summer, so it was very fast-paced. A good amount of work, but he's very generous in taking late work as long as you talk to him about it. He is very clear about the assignments he gives and how he grades. Overall, a great teacher and you can tell he listens!
I took him for ENC 1930 during the summer semester, and honestly couldn't have asked for a better professor. He is super easy going and laid back. There are a decent amount of assignments and writing but thats expected from a summer English class. Overall a 10/10 its an easy A, 100% will take him for 1102
Cannot emphasize enough how awesome this professor is. His class was enjoyable, and the assignments were engaging. It was summer so the work was a bit much, but he never took points off for late work (I turned in a lot of late work). We talked about whatever with him and made the three hours shorter. THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! :)
One of my favorite profs at FIU hands down. He cancels class every once in a while especially because of holidays and you have to miss class for any reason, he is super understanding about it. Gives about 2-3 assignments per week usually due Friday or Sunday. Overall super friendly and great guy, reminds me how much our high school teachers cared.
Prof. Mario has been nothing but amazing in the time that I've had him as a teacher. I have come to him outside of class in the CEW and he always gives great feedback about anything. He loves movies and MCR, super friendly. If you have to miss class he is very understanding about it. We usually get 2-3 assignments per week due on friday/sunday.
Awesome professor. I often felt bad my classmates wouldnt answer his questions so it was really just me and a few people talking during discussions. Sometimes others would respond too. But that's a 7 AM class for you. He did a lot to keep us engaged as possible. Very flexible with due dates. Funny and v nice guy. Would take again but not so early.
I'm thankful for Prof Avalos this semester. Where so many things went wrong. I had a lot going on this year that made me fall super behind on school and my other classes I'm probably going to fail. But he checked in on me every week and reminded me I could always make up late work so even now in the last week I'm catching up and will pass. Ty Prof.
Took Mario for ENC1102. Very unlike any professor I've had in that he's not trying to make things hard for anyone. He really wants to see everyone pass. Makes funny comments during lectures. I enjoyed the projects. It's a lot of writing obviously, but it's all manageable. Very lenient with late work too. Happy I ended up in his class. Take him.
I've never been a very confident writer but Prof Avalos helped me gain confidence in my writing. Looking back at some of the work he had us do, I didnt think I could do a good job on these research logs but I did thanks to his feedback. I feel I'm way better prepared to do more research using academic sources in future classes. Great patient guy.
Amazing professor, definitely take him. Attendance is mandatory, but he is very understanding if things come up. He cares about his students and is very helpful + lenient. There are projects and smaller assignments throughout the course. Many assignments give you lots of freedom and creativity to work with. Hard to find a professor like him!
Professor Avalos is by far the best professor at FIU. I had him at 7 am and to be able to say that he manages to make the class so entertaining and fun at that time says a lot. He cares about his students and genuinely wants you to succeed, provides extended time and is understanding. If I could take him for every class I would. TAKE HIM!
awesome guy. super chill, friendly, knows how to connect with people. made the atmosphere in the classroom pretty good, noone was stressed or worried bout this class. he's lenient with assignments, you can submit them late as long as you let him know. overall a swell guy.
Genuinely one of the nicest people I have ever met, he is beyond understanding I had him at 8 am and he understood the traffic so if anybody was late he would not cause a huge scene because of it. As long as you communicate with him about your situation he will give you extensions on your work. The lectures are super engaging and never boring.
Super funny guy, doesn't care about late work at all, simply loves to have conversations with students, and a super easy grader. All in all, an amazing professor.
The greatest professor ever. He is so sweet and super understanding. He does not care about late work, as long as you turn it in before the semester ends, he will grade it with no points off. His lectures were never boring and are engaging. He wasn't strict with the attendance. Just take him he's awesome.
Professor Avalos is definitely one of the best professors at FIU. TAKE HIM !!! He is very caring, super chill, and friendly. This class was also super easy and not stressful at all. He isn't strict with assignments but do turn them in on time. Though if you let him know ahead of time he'll allow you to turn them in late. Overall he is the BEST.
His score speaks for itself. He is awesome. I felt like he actually cared about what I had to say in class and you could tell how excited he would get when students participated. He just wants everyone to succeed and have fun. Really cool we got to chose our own research topics and spend all semester learning about it. Nothing felt like busy work.
P1: Fun, engaging assignments and lectures. Individual and group projects across the semester keep things interesting. Not usually into groups but the projects were fun and it was okay if someone slacked off cuz they were doable alone. Professor is very nice. Funny in a nerdy way. I am happy I took him for this class after a bad 1101 experience.
P2: I had to leave a second review. My ENC1101 professor really ruined my confidence as a writer even though I passed the class. I was very insecure about passing ENC1102 but Mario was always willing to meet throughout the day to discuss my concerns and go over drafts. He is a tutor too and just a great writing professor. Take him. He's an angel.
Took him for the summer b term the class was great. He accepts late work and makes writing fun. Not the typical class where you turn in essays 24/7.
Awesome professor! Very patient with his students and with late work. Class is fun and something to look forward to. Without a doubt my favorite class this semester because of the classroom vibe. It's always a good interesting conversation and less of a boring lecture. Best ENC professor out there!
Honestly the best ENC professor I've ever had. If you want a class that feels like a comfortable environment to express yourself and your work then this is the class! Prof.Avalos is so dedicated into what the course is, he helps with amazing feedback but is also caring in the way he doesn't mind late assignments and is genuinely there for students
Avalos is the best professor ever, he provides a lot of good and helpful feedback. He is flexible with due dates and is always trying to help the students out in order to succeed. Definitely recommend taking him, great person and teacher.
Prof. Avalos is the best professor I've had here at FIU. He cares about his students and wants you to succeed in life. My class was his 8am and he was always there with a smile on his face ready to go and give his best. Thank you professor!
Loved having this professor, he is a really great person and wants his students to succeed. The lessons are good and the tasks are all fairly easy. You have to put in the effort to complete everything, but in case you miss something he doesn't mind giving extensions or receiving work late. If you can take this professor :)
I loved taking this class, and the professor is a great person, he wants all his students to succeed. The lessons were nice and the tasks were fairly easy. You do need to put in the effort to complete everything, but if you happen to miss something, he has no problem giving extensions or accepting late work. Definitely take this professor!
Professor Avalos is a real one. I did fall behind on his class and stopped showing up but he reached out and told me to talk with him. We came up with a plan to get caught up and do the work and honestly. It wasn't as bad as I thought. He broke things down for me in a way it didn't seem so impossible. Nicest guy ever I wish I could take him again!
Awesome guy. He was funny and really emphasized the importance of these research skills outside of just research papers. It's all basic life skills too. He wants everyone to be informed about the world around them cuz there's a lot of misinformation out there. Cool class! Even cooler professor. Take him, you won't regret it.
King!! I loved the freedom we had to pursue our research on. Mario made it clear research isn't always limited to papers. We made websites, PowerPoints, speeches. Research can be fun and its so important to be aware about the sources you're reading because there's a lot of biased info on the internet. Thank you for everything! I recommend him!
I don't think every single assignment was necessary. There was often a lot of busy work on top of the projects. It felt like a lot. Easy but the work takes time. I would say he is great though. Subtly one of the most hilarious professors I've had so far. Some of his side comments. Hilarious if you're paying attention. Very nice and approachable.
I didn't think I would pass this class. I stopped showing up after Spring Break...stupid reasons but I fell behind on all my classes and was embarassed to show face again. He encouraged me to go back to class the last few weeks and just do the work. I didn't think it was possible but I got a B! I came to him during office hours a lot. Nicest prof.
First semester at FIU and couldnt have asked for a better ENC professor! He made the assignments fun by letting us do videos and podcasts. Assigned lots of group projects so I made a few friends very early on and was always happy to go to class. Very cool guy. Sweet. Patient with everyone. I would take him every year if possible. :)
Great professor. Really enjoyed his lectures and in class activities. But too much homework. I was taking 5 classes and somehow this was the most demanding of all of them even my major classes. He was nice enough to give extensions if you asked but I felt bad asking after a few times. It does get easier towards the end though I will say at least.
Great professor! Explains things clearly and is super kind and chill. He assigns a lot of projects (can feel overwhelming), but he's very understanding and lenient with deadlines. He gave extra credit for the SPOTS survey. And he's an easy grader for real. Occasionally cancels class on perfect days. As long as you manage time, he's worth it!
Can't recommend Professor Avalos enough. First time I have ever been so invested in a research paper. It's technically one long project but you complete it in small parts over the semester. It all comes together in the end. Lots of philosophical talks about AI and fake news, the concepts of information literacy. Loved this class.
Awesome class. It was my second time taking it, but my friends recommended Mario so I rolled the dice. I learned a lot more this time around. He assigns cool projects and really gets you to understand why research matters in school and in life. You don't realize how much fake news or bias is out there until you take a class like this. Take him!
I respect how he is able to teach these concepts without getting political or personal. We are talking about ideas like misinformation and bias a lot and he brings in current events to make it relevant. He is clever with his wording so as to be neutral when he talks about things idk how he does it. Very important class. I learned so much from him.
Lots of work but overall the big projects all mostly build off each other which is great. Cool guy. Good lectures. I'd take him for every writing class if possible.
He is super down to earth and respects his students. This is an easy pick if you are trying to get English out of the way
The best professor! I hope to take him for 1101 and 1102 in the Fall and Spring! He actually made me enjoy writing when I hated it in high school. Lowkey still do but his projects were very fun and I learned new skills doing them which I can apply in other papers. Overall great class.
He was amazing!! I took him for Spring and he made the class enjoyable. There are many assignments but he is very understanding and gives extensions when needed. He is available outside of class and will do anything to ensure you don't fail this class. Take him, he is the best!
I'm a bit late to rate him, but this teacher is a Godsend! I had to retake his course because I took an overwhelming number of classes the other time, but going with him a second time was the best choice I made. He's very understanding and posts 3 assignments a week, just talk to him if you need an extension. He's also a really good person to know!
Professor Avalos was a great teacher and would make the class interesting. He promotes conversation between the students and overall makes great connection to his students. I would definitely take again.
Couldn't have asked for a better professor my first semester at FIU. Class was always fun and we were always excited to see what activity he would have us doing. I made some great friends in this class which made the transition to college so much easier. He just makes learning fun. Seriously the best teacher you will ever have.
I'm still working on my final project but I want to say he didn't have to let me pass the class. He's very kind and flexible about due dates. I have been a major procrastinator all semester and he has always worked with me to still be passing. It's like he actually cares about the fact we have lives outside of school. Awesome and patient professor.
Mario is my favorite professor this summer! He made me enjoy writing about things I cared about like Bad Bunny's music and some of my hot takes about Love Island. I definitely feel more comfortable writing now. He gives lots of group projects so you get to know people in the class very well. Would take him again if possible.
You're gonna write a lot in this class but that's kind of the point. You're gonna write about things you actually care about which is a nice change from writing based on testing prompts. Mario is really down to earth and approachable and made me for the first time in my life feel like, maybe I'm not such a bad writer after all.
Great professor. Gave 4 assignments a week and they were all kinda repetitive which made them annoying. Will give extension if ask. Nice teacher lectures weren't too boring and he engaged with the class a lot. Lets us work together for pretty much all the assignments. Took forever to grade though.
This professor is honestly the best. Im ending class with a 98-99% and all I did was show up to class and participate. If you're not lazy this class should be a breeze and you'll end with the same grade. Attendance is graded so just show up. I would take him again and again and this is coming from someone who hates going to class and doing work
I accidentally put level 5 difficulty on my last review but i meant 1
Reallyy great guy. Lectures are interesting and make you think about the world around you and how you can be more information literate. Whole class is one research project broken up into parts. Let's you choose your own topic so that was really helpful. Overall, awesome profesor.
Can't recommend Professor Mario enough. Taught us how to research in much more innovative ways than high school would have you think. Lots of work every week but it all helps you understand your topic as much as possible and from all different angles. Awesome teacher, stays on top of you to make sure you don't fall behind. 10/10
Get this man a raise the way he came in every day at 7 AM with a smile on his face. He was sooo sweet and understanding with late work when I needed extra time and that was often. I would say don't be afraid to talk to him he wants to work with you to make sure you get the work done even if you fall behind like I did. Best ENC profesor ever!!!!
Cannot recommend Professor Avalos more. He makes his classes engaging and truly cares about his students. If you ever need an extension on any assignment he is more than understanding. He is an awesome teacher and lets you choose your own topic of research for the semester. If you put in the work this class will be a breeze for you.
Professor Avalos made my first semester of freshman year so much better. I started with no friends and feeling really out of place, but his group projects like the campus scavenger hunt brought our class together. I made real friends I hope to keep after the semester. So he's not just a really great teacher he actually cares about you as a person.
The most down to earth guy ever. Lectures felt more like deep conversations. Yes assignments can be repetitive but they help when it comes to do the bigger projects so it's not for nothing. Attendance was mandatory but after Thanksgiving it was always half empty which was sad to see cause you could tell it affected him. Take him but don't skip!
Mario Avalos is an amazing professor. A 7 AM class with him is genuinely the most chillaxed thing ever. I talked with him a lot during that time, and he's pretty awesome. If you are worried about turning in work late, he is pretty flexible. He is also extremely understanding. The 7 AM may seem horrendous, but it is worth it with him.
One of the best professors I have ever had. He is patient, caring, and deeply committed to his students' success. He explains every assignment step by step and never leaves us confused. His teaching style is clear, organized, and encouraging. He inspired me to become a better writer. I will always remember him.
Take this professor
Professor Avalos never makes you feel dumb or like your ideas are stupid. I wanted to do my research on something that wasn't really academic but through his teaching I was able to still gather sources on my topic and make a final podcast I was proud of. Very motivational teacher. I can't thank him enough for the semester.
Without a doubt the best ENC professor at FIU. He's hilarious, smart, caring, and goes the extra mile to make sure everyone is in track. Just makes the class a place you want to show up to. He gives stickers away, brought candy on Halloween. Little things most professors don't really do. He's the coolest. I'd take him again if possible.
This is an easy class if you put in the effort. Most of the work starts in class and can be finished for homework. Professor is very lenient and patient with his students. Yes it's a mandatory class but I learned a lot and had fun with it.
Excellent class, amazing professor. I wish I had a teacher like him back in high school maybe I would have liked writing from an earlier age. I keep a journal now and I've been writing my thoughts on movies and music more. It feels good. I owe that to Mario and the kinds of things he had us writing about all semester and the confidence he gave me.
Prof. Mario is nothing short from excellent in what he does and he is a great guy once you get to know him. He loves music, film, karaoke, and food! He will always care about your progress in class so feel free to reach out to him whenever. Choosing him as your professor will be the best choice you'll make while being at FIU.
