OMG I DUNNO HE WAS OKAY, MADE THE MIDTERM REALLY HARD AND FINAL EASY. TOO LAID BACK FOR MY LIKING....
If you listen he'll tell you all the questions on the midterms and finals.
omg, this guy is so bad! you can barely understand him in class! avoid if possible! his final had nothing to do with chemistry!
Pay attention when he plays "How it's made" this is what the exam is on. And if you have questions... tough, hes not answering.
Really nice guy. Go to class! He'll often get you to star things in class -- very likely will be on final. Had him for a 4th year and a grad class. Not bad. Could be more to the point & have better notes, sometimes his examples aren't 100% clear/complete, but with a little extra reading, you can fill in any gaps.
I know a lot of people hate on Mario but I actually really like him! He writes all his notes in class on the board, and if you attend class he pretty much tells you everything that is going to be on the midterm and final. They are easy is you go to class and listen as the questions are straight from the notes.
Notes unorganized and full of contradictions and mistakes. No online resources. Very nonchalant about course which can be frustrating for anyone trying to do well in it. Don't expect to receive any acknowledgment of questions or reliable office hours.
Jesus..where should I start..His notes are disorganized the only time you can really ask questions is after class. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD..would it hurt him to respond to an email? My advice try to avoid if you want to actually learn useful stuff and not random stuff, I would suggest Lori Jone as a superior pick.
Terrible.
Worst prof.
WORST PROF EVER! notes are useless and disorganized. goes off topic and talks about random things he claims are examples. then randomly will refer back to those "examples" in future lectures. IF THERE ARE ANY (and i mean ANY) OTHER OPTIONS FOR A PROF, TAKE THEM OVER MONTEIRO!
Horrible prof. Do not even think of going to his lectures. It will be a waste of your time!!!
Horrible lecturer. Completely disorganized. Hated his class.
Very difficult to understand. Lecture notes are unclear, yet somehow repetitive.
avoid him
Sounds like he'd be a good upper-year prof, but I found it was VERY hard to follow along with Monteiro. His notes seemed really unorganized, and it was very hard to tell what the key points were all year. I attended every class, yet struggled on the quizzes. Ive been going through Baker's notes, and they are absolutely gorgeous. Go for Baker or Jones
Unorganized, doesn't help you out, no office hours, uninterested about students, never know whats on exams
Although Dr. Monteiro was at times unclear, I actually enjoyed going to his classes. His notes are a little unclear but the nice thing was he was writing it down, instead of just talking off of a powerpoint, which helped me follow his thought process better. He has done a lot of work with the chemistry department and he does care about his students
Probably the worst prof I ever had. So unorganized, uncaring, unclear. Wouldn't allow equation sheets but wouldn't teach them either. What a joke.
Unorganized, unclear lectures. Unclear exam questions (you will always find errors on the questions). Stupid examples. Acts as if he cares for students who come to class. I wouldn't recommend taking chem with him.
GREAT Professor. It is clear he wants his students to do well. Tells you exactly what is on his exams. 3 midterms instead of 1 so you don't have to cover as much material each exam. You have to go to class as he does not post class notes that you copy out (which makes learning the material easier). I highly recommend this prof :)
He's a good prof, though he did get a little off topic sometimes, he always gave major hints to midterms/final. If you completed the questions he suggested you got nearly perfect on everything.
Tells you EXACTLY whats on the midterms, all you have to do is go to class and copy the notes and memorize them and you will do fine. I have a feeling the final is gona be hard though...
Go to class, copy his notes and memorize them. He gives millions of examples for things that are going to be on midterms/finals, and if you practise those then you'll do well. I promise. The people who said you never know what's going to be on his evaluations obviously didn't go to class/bother to write down the stuff he said to pay attention to.
Easy midterms which don't prepare you for the incredibly tough final. No office hours. Hand written notes. Unfortunately, still probably the best chem prof at UoG...
Lectures are a little rambling, and incomplete—they're good enough to get your 75, but not enough for 80+. Always cross ref notes with text. If he says "know for final" he means "memorize for final." Some questions will be "what is X," and expect you to give X verbatim. He gets that being a student is difficult, and is more sympathetic than Jones.
Worst prof I've ever had. Unorganized, terrible tests, unclear and repetitive notes. Didn't make any accommodations after missed lectures due to 6 day hospitalization. He made a few good jokes, but avoid him at all costs.
He does not even have the course website and his handwriting is awful. He does not show respect to students at all, when you ask some questions and have different opinions he always says:" who cares". If I there were more than one class that I could choose, I would have not chosen his class for sure, terrible teacher.
Worst teacher....
Ridiculous grading rubrics. Very picky on students assignments
Monteiro tells you exactly what you need to know for the midterms, and his midterms are seriously straightforward and very very easy. You do have to go to class because he doesn't post notes, but he writes them out and explains as he goes. By far the best chemistry prof in my opinion.
If you go to class and take notes then you can easily pass this course. Yes his notes are handwritten, and yes he does not post them BUT he only does this because those who go to class know exactly what is going to be on the midterms. Anyone who gave him a bad review never took this class with other profs. He is makes this course do-able
Overall a really good and clear teacher, even if he can be a bit hard to understand sometimes. His midterms are concept focused and easy compared to the final (which is all problem solving), but he tells you pretty much exactly what's going to be on the exams and which questions you should study. His handwritten notes are easy to follow.
Conceptual midterms and practical exam, which were extremely fair. Only thing that brought my mark down was the wet labs, which he had no involvement in. Lectures are slightly disorganized but easy to follow if you're paying attention! Lots of class examples applicable to midterms and exam.
Midterms are easy but finals are deadly I Repeat finals are deadly
This course was great. 20% presentation, get 100% for participation. Take home midterm for 20%, easy 90+. Monteiro is great. Pretty messed up final though, like reallllllly messed. But otherwise cake.
Never responds to e-mails, is VERY vague about certain material (no explanation given, no clear answers to questions), and goes off on tangents while he's teaching. It's like he doesn't even care, he gives us some material, does an extremely poor job of explaining it, and is barley reachable when (not if, when) we have questions.
Handwritten notes which are extremely easy to follow. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. In the notes, he stars everything that's on a finalmidterm, and he won't trick you or lie to you. Midterms are very easy multiple choice, final is a lot tougher and all problem solving. But he goes over the exact types of questions on the final so it's very doable.
Hilarious and tells you what is on the midterms. Can be a bit vague sometimes but just ask when you don't understand! Simplifies a lot of things so it's easier to understand unlike reading the textbook. 100% recommend a class with him!
Monteiro is a great prof and actually cares if people do well. Make sure to go to class as all his lecture notes are hand written. He doesn't give too much homework like i 1040, just the basics to help you understand. Also he pretty much tells you everything that is going to be on the midterms.
Amazing! Is a great prof. Teaches with passion and truly teaches for understanding, not just throwing everything at our face and telling us to memorize. Is considerate and understands what it's like to be a student and help a lot. Go to classes and you'll love chemistry and him at the end! I would take this class over and over again if I could.
He is the funniest prof I've ever had and probably my fave. he writes the lecture notes in class as you go so it's VERY easy to follow along!! doesn't give out a lot of homework because he kind of dumbs it down a bit so you're not using big terms and confusing diagrams that no one understands. tells you exactly what's on the tests.
Go to class and you'll be fine. Well worth it. His lectures are very clear and condense the textbook material to make it understandable. He will tell you what's on the exam, to the point where if you only take time to know the material he says is on the exam, you'll get at least a 75 on it. Not a difficult class at all, he goes at a great pace.
Very awesome teacher, actually cares about his subject and tries to make topics relatable. While, if you go to class, yes you will get the "What's on the exam" questions, but you will also get a lot of questions that are not. When you go to his office hours, if you're prepared, he is more than willing to help. Tough marker. His midterms are easy.
He's such a cutie and i loved when he got off topic and shared some of his life stories about his kids and wife. He writes out his notes so you can easily follow along. Wish we had a course link. Other than that, I enjoyed his class! Midterms were fair and all mc, the exam was all short answers and little challenging so really study his notes!!
He writes out all his notes by hand during class, so attendance is not optional. I had to retake this class, since I failed it with Jones and found it made so much more sense the way he taught it. He only tests on theory during the midterms, and then the final is painful. I have no idea what happened for my mark to drop so drastically.
I enjoyed Monteiro's lectures more than lots of other core science courses. He used real-world examples and made it clear what was expected.
THE COURSE DIRECTOR (who sets material&LAB) IS THE HARD GRADER! Dr. Monteiro really wants everyone to pass but only has control over HOW he teaches and midterms(These is my observations for this course) He has strong values&strong head, interactive&is not afraid to pick on students. Not so good at hierarchical flow but Read His LIPS &you'll pass.
He gives you numerous hints as to what will be on the midterms and exam! Definitely have to go to class to get the hints, he is more than willing to help.
I LOVE HIM. Had him for CHEM1050 and CHEM/TOX3360. He is honestly hilarious and makes morning classes bearable! He is clear, concise, gets to the point, and makes it clear what is expected of you. All he wants is for you to come to class!! Highly recommend not missing any, as he hand writes his notes every class and there is no course link.
Had Chem 1050 with him for F16. Nice person, but as a prof I found him really hard to understand and found that I was just memorizing material to pass his midterms and exam. If you read his lips and study EXACTLY what he tells you, you will do well. But it becomes negotiable as to whether or not you actually learn anything.
Worst prof I have ever had and ever will have. DO NOT PICK HIM. Teaches strictly by hand written notes (No actual slides available whatsoever). Does not explain theories in depth and covers about 1/3 of the content that Lori Jones teaches. His work in vaccines does not mean he is good at teaching. The prof cannot teach and doesn't help you asked.
Very unorganized, hard to follow in lectures. Does not complete examples, and does not post any slides or information online. Would not recommend. Even if this is a required course, drop it and take it with another prod.
He's a very nice person but is clearly one of those profs that wants to research and not teach. He switched from PowerPoint slides to writing on lined paper with a Sharpie. So the quality of resources is terrible. Tests are way beyond the scope of CHEM1050 material - not at all reasonable. GO TO every single SLGs & office hrs! MEMORIZE Qs from lecs
To ace the class with Monteiro DON'T rely on the textbook. Go to his lectures as his in class examples will be on the exam. Pay attention in class. Do his homework questions. His lectures are god awful but you will fail if you do not practice his in class examples like a religion. Don't trust when he says he will give you free marks for dry labs.
Great prof and made lectures fun to attend. Explained things clearly and tests easy. I would recommend him as a professor.
Lectures were always clear and concise, lets you know exactly what is expected of you
Great Prof. Super clear about what you need know, as long as you attend the lecture you are set to do well on the midterms and final. During his lectures he will tell you problem that will be on the midterms and exams. He keeps class simple and easy to follow. One of the best profs.
Dont get him if you have to take this class. Take it with someone else If you can. Hes very unorganized and is restricted to handwritten notes. Also he doesnt make the textbook a reliable source in any way. He makes everything about himself. So clearly its his notes.
Professor is unorganized with his thoughts in teaching. Tends to go on tandems halfway through lecture. I would not take his course again. Nice guy but tends to give his opinion on non chemistry matters when we are all there for chemistry not life advice.
It's clear that students who rate this professor negatively don't show up to class/ do the homework. The grading criteria couldn't have been more clear. He even gives you midterm and finals questions in the lecture! So show up to class, work hard, and you'll be just fine.
Go to class! He tells you questions to know for all the tests. Goes off on tangents but I found them amusing. Almost all questions on the midterms/final were from his notes, or the book, which he told us to know multiple times. People who did poorly in this class either didn't go or just didn't listen! Listen when he speaks and you'll be just fine!
If you don't go to the lectures, you will most likely fail! He goes off in a lot of tangents, but I find it funny and endearing. Though, you should note that his tangents might be included in the MT or the exam. He tests you on the title of the labs so know that too. For the exam, it isn't MC but he clearly gives the problems. I GOT AN 89 AFTER.
Whoever makes the quizzes and labs really wants you to fail ngl.
This professor is a joke, if you need to take a required course absolutely do not take it with him. I understand that during covid things have been difficult for professors but I literally selected the course for the virtual lectures. And I was given only slideshows and textbook readings, this is completely unacceptable and would not suggest taking
He's hilarious, barely gives homework, and if you do all the homework questions you're guaranteed an A. the labs are a struggle. He's very understanding, and the midterms are super easy if you pay attention in class
A breath of fresh air going to his lectures!
Moves at a pace that's easy to understand, provides real examples and always makes jokes! Lectures and class notes are EXTREMELY helpful, he provides lots of example questions and gives MAJOR hints about what to expect for tests. Easy to get a good mark if you do his examples and follow class notes (labs are worst part but are NOT made by profs).
Midterms and exam don't use respondus and so far haven't been difficult. He can be hard to understand and gets sidetracked/disorganized. His slides are particularly bad. He's pretty funny though. The labs are hard but he didn't make them so I can't fault him for that. Seems pretty chill just isn't my favourite prof.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Mario is super chill and caring; he is respectful of his students and wants us to succeed. Attendance is not mandatory, however, he gives exam questions in class which makes the course a breeze. Absolutely hilarious guy. no respondus etc. Not finished the class yet but have an 86. Labs hard; Midterms easy :)
He will answer any homework questions you have.
He told us what would be on the assessments and clearly cared about helping us understand without making the course difficult, but I found the lectures very boring. If you already have a strong chem background, you'll probably feel bored in class. I also found it hard to organize myself because his lectures weren't very structured.
His passion is admirable but his skills as a teacher are limited. No textbook, and no reference materials. The only source of information were his handwritten notes that are nearly impossible to organize into coherent sections. Going to class does not clarify what he is writing down as he goes off on tangents. Felt like a waste of a class
do his lectures make sense? no. do his slides? no. But Mario is that guy. After he had trouble grading the first midterm he made the next and the final online open book. he also made himself available to anyone with questions. his teaching style Is a little wonky but you can't say he doesn't care.
Mario is that guy. Do his lectures make sense? Not really. Do his slides? no. But he is a very funny prof who does occasionally go on random tangents about who knows what - but It keeps you entertained. After he had trouble grading the first midterm gave everyone 100 then he made the next and the final online open book. Questions? He'll have answrs
Really great guy, if you go to lectures he basically tells you what will be on midterms and final. Attendance isn't mandatory but I def suggest going plus he's really funny and you can tell he cares and wants everyone to succeed.
Amazing
he is a very nice man overall but I found his lectures to be a mess and his slides can be really hard to follow, even if you're going to lectures. he doesn't give practice material or any resources and he's very vague when telling us the textbook problems we have to do to practice. i also found communication with him a bit difficult
great prof
He cherry picks contents out of his slides in his lecture contents, at the same time he tells you what content will be on the tests. He will have you meet him after class to discuss questions.
Excellent prof, is willing to give you extra help if you need it. I recommend attending his lectures, since he doesn't post any content online. He's such a nice guy, by far one of the best profs I've ever had.
Mario is nothing short of a fantastic professor. I was excited to go to class and pay attention. He would link everything he taught back to real-world examples and life applications. It is clear that he loves teaching and loves his students. He was always happy to answer questions. 10/10. Amazing prof.
Such a happy guy, he loves teaching and is super easy to learn from, make sure you go to his lectures and youll do good in the course (except for the labs they suck but that not on him). Monteiro is an amazing prof. if you get him for chem you are so so so lucky.
Don't expect to perform well by skipping lectures, many questions on midterms/ exams were pulled directly from quotes, jot-notes etc. during lectures. Very entertaining, and talked about real world examples and applications for the content. Taking his Tox class because of how awesome he was
Some may not like him; but to that I say "don't hate the player, hate the game". His presence is known whenever you see him on campus, this guy walks with enough style to compete with models. His tangents are very entertaining and you may end up learning more life lessons than course material. If I was stuck on a deserted island I would bring him.
you can barely understand his teaching he has no resources posted no textbook to study from bad teacher don't recommend taking his class weird guy
Lectures were entertaining, alot of questions on midterms were taking from stuff said in class. Midterms and final were online
Lectures will help on all exams. Not always very clear with his explanations but exams were very fair and doable if you went to class. Interesting and entertaining, sometimes confusing though.
I took him for CHEM1040. I liked the prof. If you go and take notes you'll be good for the midterms and final. Do some extra reading that he suggests, it is usually pretty light. He knows what he is talking about and clearly cares that you understand the material.
Nice guy but can't teach. Posts almost nothing but some readings online so you need to go to class. Goes off on tangents, is super scattered and only uses the chalkboard. Didn't learn anything useful. Midterm grading was harsh, he expected specific answers without telling us what he wanted. Take this with another prof if you actually want to learn.
Ignore the last review. This was a highly memorable course. He definitely puts his own spin on it, which is more orgo heavy. I felt like I was learning at a proper level 3000, the exams involved drawing/naming structures for different processes. Sure it's tough but he literally gave us all the answers in class. Go to class and enjoy his jokes!
