He is a very interesting professor. His lectures can sometimes be long and monotone, but he is always willing to have discussions with you. His final involves answering two essay questions. As long as you can back up your opinion, he will give you an A or a B.
Good lecturer. Was willing to facilitate classroom discussion about various issues. Textbook was necessary for the final exam. Required a 7-10 page paper, or a visit to a government meeting (plus an oral report).
Great story teller! haha
This professor was incredibly nice and gave good lectures. I would recomend him to anyone. He let people make up each test if they missed and does not grade too hard. Also his willingness to negotiate due dates and grading curves are open. Take this professor!
Class was very easy. Prof goes on a lot of tangents but gives gigantic curves on test and project is super easy and 40% of grade. A on project usually means A in class. Just make sure you go, he takes att.
Go to class, and the test reviews. You can shoot him straight on essays he likes the up-front honest answer, no BS type. Great Teacher teaches the stuff you need to to know.
Easy professor. Hardly used the book. It's wise to take notes down during his lectures. Tests pretty easy. Knows his politics. Easily recommended and easy "A".
He usually takes attendance, but not always. Get the text book simply because he will occassionally let you use it for a test. I enjoyed his class and got an easy A. Make sure to pay attention to what he says but don't take anything personal-- he's very blunt about the bad things certain races have done in the past.
Awesome teacher/also a teacher at UTSA!! Only two test and a group project. Attendance is a must due to the other garde you recv is frm a notebook of class lectures and handout. Its very open discussion he is will to answer ANY question even if off topic. Also I wld invest in the book-he sometimes allows open book tests.
He reminds me of Kramer. He is a good professor but his exams are extremely hard. Do not go by what everyone says. His exams are very difficult and at least for my class the average grade on the exams were in the 50s. He curves a little depending how bad the exam grades were. The only way to get a hold of him is a few minutes before class.
very blunt, smart, good teacher. didnt take attendance in my class and posts recorded lectures on webct. i took him for topics-civil rights and you could tell he is really passionate about the subject. 2 tests, final, project. none very difficult.
Took him for Civil Rights. Group project worth a lot of points. Kinda boring to listen to him talk, but the content is interesting. He repeats stuff day after day after day. Felt like going to every class was a waste of time. Easy tho, didn't get much out of it except an A.
He is a TERRIBLE teacher. He gives power points that are vague and it is POINTLESS to come to class. Basically just read the entire book if you want to do well. Is a nice guy but horrible teacher.
He has a lot of personal experience in Texas politics, mainly as a former SA city councilman which makes the class relevant. Lectures follow the powerpoint slides posted on WebCT EXCEPT for the beginning of the semester before the first test. Curves generously, assigns no homework and attendance is not mandatory.
Good professor and is more concerned with what you learned rather than trite facts. Teaches above level but provides examples that make it easy. You will learn a lot and not be bored. Teaches about the details rather than the prevailing views.
Only slackers tend to think he was bad. He is the best
It is impossible to fail his class if you prepare yourself. He gave us three exams, all open note/open book. If we were satisfied with our average after the third test we could exempt the final. All of the material is posted online on Powerpoint so attendance is not really necessary except on test review days when he tells you EXACTLY what will b
It's impossible to fail if you prepare. There's 3 exams, all open note/open book. If you like your avg after the 3rd test you can exempt the final. All the material is online on Powerpoint so attendance isn't really necessary. Go on test review days when he tells you EXACTLY what will be tested on. I went to class about half the time and got an A.
He knows his material extremely well. If you read the book and look at the power points, you will do just fine. He cares about the topic, and his class is extremely easy. If you had an A or B you were exempt from the final if you wanted to be.
very easy tests.... take him
i was excited to take this course because of a pre-existing interest in the topic. killed that pretty fast. WORST lecturer i've ever had--just browses through websites during class remarking "oh, this is interesting." knows his stuff but makes NO attempt to have any semblance of organizational structure/theme in his class. easy A, but a waste of $.
EASY EASY EASY. Gave out powerpoints and allowed us to use our notes on the test. Test were easy to begin with. You can even opt out of the final, no matter what your grade is. TAKE PROF SALAS!
Prof Salas is the easiest teacher ever! Like they said, he lets you use notes, books, and laptops on the tests, and since he puts the notes online there is no need to go to class except for about the first three weeks! if you are a CAP student take him! It will def. raise your GPA!
Really intelligent guy, basically hands out A's, really easy going if you are able to get a couple of good test grades with his curve and turn in like 2 workbook assignments. Class is really short most of the time but its not really mandtory to go..
EASY, although DO the review if u want to have a high grade in the tests, he LOVES TEXAS and emphasizes SAN ANTONIO , repeats himself, do ALL THE WORKBOOK HW
PRofessor Salas was awesome i really enjoyed the material from the first test he really gets into the "Real" Easy A just make sure you do all your hw they counted as test grades.
Professor Salas is a very easygoing instructor. All tests are open book and it's an easy A if you do the workbook assignments and do well on the tests, which like I wrote before, are open book.
Salas is a very educated, interesting man and I agree with a lot of his viewpoints. I just wish he would have shared more of his knowledge with the class this semester. True, his class is an easy "A," but how much information was the class exposed to?
Salas is a very knowledgeable prof. He knows what he's talking about. Although I thought his class was going to be more about how the U.S. and Texas government officials have interacted with international leaders over history, but in actuality he focused more on civil rights movement and slavery issues. Open book tests/final. He's great!
This professor is an extremely easy A. However, his class is extremely boring and a complete waste of time.
All of the work books required are written by him, so your basically paying him double. He was easy, but terribly boring, almost to the point of not making the class worth taking.
Great professor. Class is interesting if you actually listen, get a seat close if you want to... ( some people are rude and talk in the back of class) learned A LOT. kinda a lot of note taking, BUT you can use them on all of the test, and the final. If you come to class, take notes, and listen, this class should be a very easy A. :) take him!!
You have to take notes because everything he writes down will be on the test! EASY A! you could trade notes with people too and test are open note! homework's are easy. Share a book with someone because you barely use it and hmk is typed up.
People, go to class and take notes. The OPEN NOTE TEST questions come STRAIGHT from what he writes down. Seriously, don't be a annoying on Blackboard and ask everyone else for notes... It gets old. This is college, and if you can't get your self up to go and copy exactly what he is writing, then you are just too lazy. Super easy class.
SUPER EASY BUT MUST GO TO CLASS!!! All test were open note/book! I believe there were about 2 homework assignments and for the most part if you turn it in on time you get 100, well at least I did and that was half a page worth for each question of bull (usually 2 questions per homework). Highly suggest this professor!
Civil Rights: Excellent course. We hardly used the books, but it's a must have to do the homework. The lectures are posted on blackboard, so if you miss a class, you can watch it later. You must take lots of notes. Open note exams. several short essays count the same as exams. Does not take up too much time from other classes. Some effort for A.
Even though this class was extremely easy and homework and test were pretty easy, I learned so much from this class on the truth of the blacks and other famous historical events. I'd take it if you are interested in that kind of thing.
Salas seems like a nice guy, but rambles 30% of class time and gets super boring. He still lets us out early most of the time too. Tests are open note, and he sometimes adds curves. If your out of options, take him. However, there are better fish in the politics professor sea.
He gets grumpy if you ask him to repeat something but is also pretty nice. His exams are open note and if you take notes in class the exam is almost exact to the notes.
All tests/final = open notes. it's still kinda hard to get an A though cause some aren't found in there plus the notes are very unorganized. He rambles on and on and wastes time by showing us websites, but he's a nice guy and is very passionate about POL. the man wrote his own textbooks for god's sake..
His notes are highly unorganized and thats the only resource you have for the tests. His personal books do not help at all on the last 2 tests (only used on his first test). I went to office hours and he was rude, he belittles his students and seems to assume everyone is a slacker. I wouldn't take him if you want to learn anything or be respected.
Nice guy, sometimes lectures are boring, but I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. He intergrates a lot of history into the class which was cool. He gave a curve on two of the tests and also gave extra credit opportunites and every test was open note/book. He is also very passionate about politics and history, which made the class engaging.
Professor Salas is BAD. He is very boring, and rambles about things unrelated to the class. He doesn't post any resources online so you better go to class every single day. He requires an online paper. He never posts any grades except tests. He also requires several online modules that are unrelated to his notes. I hated this class and dropped.
Unorganized and jumps back and forth between his notes, which he does not post and does base his 3 MC exams on. So, you must attend class and take notes. Exams are NOT open note/book, but is non-cumulative. You also have an online essay and chapter homework from the book. Study the notes based on his oral review and you will get an A or a B.
Tests-closed-note & straight forward.HIS REVIEW-given the class before every test(If you never go to class, ATTEND THESE!Very helpful).Easy Midterm essay-2 months to prepare. Online e-book-needed for assignments and book. Lectures-powerpts.Once admited that all you needed for test was the review,no book.
He's a very knowledgable person, but it's incredibly difficult to pass his class. There are few assignments. The questions on his tests are really tricky. There are extra credit assignments, but they're worth little points. I wouldn't recommend taking him.
Most of the time, he just talks about stupid things that aren't helpful at all. Exams are based on notes but his lectures are really unorganized and confusing. Exams are hard - questions are really tricky.
While he does ramble a lot and get off topic often, all you need to do is go to class, copy all of his notes word for word, pay attention to the examples he uses, and attend class the day before the exam for the review. There are also online quizzes which come from book. Study and do all of that and you should make an A.
I took Salas during one of my first semesters here. He was a great prof. You are able to use your notes during the test, so be sure to sit up front so the rude people in the back won't distract you (most of the time you could never hera him talking b/c of these ppl) Q's come right out of the notes... EASY A, good prof.
so boring and all you do is take notes. literally. thats all you do. all class long........
Professor Salas was probably the most interesting teachers out there. He shows another side to Pol 1133. tells you some of the craziest stories that you would not believe! come to class! take good notes, and ATTEND THE CLASS BEFORE THE TEST! TRY and you will get an A
Currently taking his online class. He is never there at his office hours - 1st he skipped, 2nd problems with blackboard, 3rd went out for lunch. 3 times is a pattern. Extremely unhelpful, rigid and unwilling to accept new ideas. Very bad with technology and extremely forgetful. You are just one student to him among thousands. does not care
Worst professor I've ever had. From the moment I tried contacting him to join the class all the way through the ridiculous final he gives, he is useless. He was late distributing both online exams on time and the final PowerPoint is more work than he ever put into the class. He is the worst online instructor ever.
worst professor ive ever had. Nothing makes any sense, no class structure, never has anything right or graded on black board. This prof is a complete mess and is going to ruin my gpa. Quizzes that use the text but testslecture are all in class. Nothing makes sense!! Dont take him
Mr Salas is an interesting teacher and most of his lectures are fascinating. If i were a US history major or something similar, I would WANT this guy to be my professor. He does not offer that much help though and he hardly responds back to emails. Attendance is not mandatory but if you want to pass his class then attendance is mandatory.
This class is straight garbage. The quizzes and test are straightforward, except you cant ever succeed. Horrible class do not take. GPA ruiner
Professor Salas likes to talk about his past experiences while he's lecturing. The point scale he uses to determine your grade is a little confusing but you takes some time to getting used to. All exams are from his lectures but pop quizzes are from the book. Notes are needed to pass.
You never really know what your grade is in this class. Pay attention and come to the lecture and you'll pass. literally everything he says is on the test. No homework at all besides online quizzes and the electoral college thing. pretty easy other than that. Oh and he likes to go off topic sometimes
He's a cool teacher. No need for a book. He tells you his tests are straight from his notes. Go to class or get the notes from someone and you'll be fine. His test reviews tell you exactly what is going to be on the test. He cracks jokes throughout the entire class. Great Attitude. Would definitely take again.
I found the class interesting cause he gave us a better understanding of what politics actually is, with things most other professors don't want to share; especially since he used to be a city councilman! Only thing is he repeated himself a lot, which pushed us back, causing due date confusion.. Tests are straight from his notes/review though!
Taking an online class right now, the work load isn't horrible but the final seems a little crazy compared to everything else, he is kind of harsh on making sure you hit deadlines, he takes things down like lectures after a certain time and he makes you buy HIS book he wrote along with the We The People book it's 60 bucks, but you have to for exams
Not rude or mean just speeds through his lectures and makes it extremely difficult to copy notes. Refuses to post power points online so even if you come to class everyday and actively take notes but miss a few things, you won't be able to access that information ever again. Very easy to get bored in this class/fall asleep.
He is decent professor. Take good notes in class, mostly lets you take pictures of the slides. Verbal reviews given in exam before test. Boring lectures. Uses TopHat and gives 10% for attendance. Not too bad. I would take him again.
Great professor, very insightful, just sucks that he wont post lectures online and that he speeds through the lectures. Easy exams, straight from the reviews/lecture notes. Very nice guy, if you do happen to need a slide of notes or a sentence, you can just ask him for it after class and has no problem letting you get what you need from the lecture
If you want to do good on the exams, YOU NEED TO ATTEND THE REVIEW SESSION BEFORE THE EXAM!!!!! Key to success. My advise is to finish all the online quizzes ASAP, they're tough, and 5 questions each, don't sweat it, they don't weigh that much on your grade if you do horrible.
Lectures are long and hard to follow. I couldn't hear a word he was saying for the first 2 weeks of class and I sat in the middle of the room. Im sure a small class with him would be great but his larger lecture classes have very few grades and no help. If you struggle in the beginning you are ruined. Powerpoints are just long paragraphs he reads.
I had him for Texas politics and honestly it was the worst class for that semester. His lectures were hard to follow and he would consistently run off on tangents. Half the time it felt like he was not even teaching Texas Politics.
Dont listen to the other comments. I took Prof. Salas last sem for Tx Politics and it was by far the easiest class I have ever taken. Literally I walked into class got the top hat code and left , never took notes, never read book. Before every test he gives out a ppt review, which straight from the test. Study the review 100 on the each test.
Professor Salas's class was not a hard one to pass. If you go and take notes, and then show up to the review sessions right before the test, you're golden. I'm the worst at any social science and I still managed to get an A in the class just by memorizing a few simple concepts.
Lectures are not very interesting, but content is very important. Only two exams with a lot of lecture content in them. Gives extra credit opprotunities sometimes.
Professor Salas is a very good man with some very important historic information you won't other classes. Yes, he does drag on and is boring sometimes, but his knowledge speaks for itself. I would take him if you want a relaxed political science credit with a bit of a twist.
Salas is a funny/sarcastic professor. He does discuss ALOT in lecture but also posts online. This class is honestly very difficult. In order to pass, you need to attend SI sessions. He goes over so many topics that it is hard to study for a test
He is really funny, you just need to attend class because sometimes he will do an attendance grade but that is rare
His grading system is complete garbage. You can only miss 8 points from all your quizzes and tests, which means 8 questions from any of the following any more then 8 and you can not get an A in the class. Being that all of his 3 tests are 50 questions and 14 quizzes with 5 questions each means it is nearly impossible to get an A.
Salas has the most boring lectures. He rants on and on about things that usually aren't dealing with politics. He gives a review the class before the test but they're very vague. He goes through his notes/slides super fast so you have to go back on your own time. He doesn't teach the material very well so you have to rely on the test review!
Prof. Salas usually rants and goes off topic. This was fine the first week of class, but please save yourself from thinking its okay to sit in a freezing cold auditorium to listen to this man talk. He tries to force you to buy his book, BUT DON'T DO IT. Online quizzes that are assigned should be done ASAP. The answers are online. SI sessions!
I took his class online this semester. He requires you to purchase two textbooks. One of them is written by him and the entire book is just a bunch of ramblings and obscure facts. His grammar for posting descriptions is poor, his due dates arent clear and his tests are erratic when it comes to how to study and prepare. Wouldnt recommend his class
Requires you to buy two text books. Both are overpriced, one of which is his. His book basically is filled with his opinions on Texas history. The class wasnt that difficult, but what brought down everyones grade was the final. His answer choices were extremely ambiguous, which makes you miss a lot of questions.
very strange way of teaching the class but has a lot of knowledge of history. But the exams were poorly written. Never gave actual study material and didn't properly grade exams. Machine is suppose to grade scantrons not the professor
Nice guy, however I feel he knows too much and get excited in his lectures, so much so that nothing flows. Information is simply scattered. He is definitely into himself and his accomplishments, and most of his work can be biased. His grading ratios be off and when you try to confront him about his mistakes he's offended. Test are ambiguous.
Forces you to buy at least one book, which he wrote and is his own ranting and opinions. His lectures are the exact same: either listening to him read off his slides (which he says he'll post, but rarely does), or watching videos on topics that are usually the same. Has you do discussion post every week on the same three subjects.
This professor was good in he was able to give the information for the tests. The book is not needed because the tests come from his lectures and PowerPoints which he puts on BlackBoard. Even though he provided this material, it was very difficult to listen to him. He was very biased and stated his opinions like they were facts.
Very boring but also easy. If you have common knowledge of politics then this is an easy class. Showed up to half the classes and when i did go i wouldn't be listening half the time and still managed to get a B+. He post the slides online so all you have to do is study that and do the responsive "attendance" posts and its an easy grade
This class is hard to fail. The attendance he sends out are on Blackboard and they last for around 3 days so you don't have to show up to class to get the points for attendance. Also, all the lecture notes he posts on BB and he tells you exactly what will be on the test. The notes are in the same wording as the exam questions.
THE. MOST. BORING. PROFESSOR. EVER. The subject matter (TX Politics) isn't exactly riveting, but he makes it even more boring. Reads from PowerPoint, when he teaches -- the rest of the time, he's off-topic, rambling & telling stories - most of which relate to his time on the city council. I wish I had registered for a class with another Professor.
Honestly, I has my professor switched 3 times in the beginning of the semester and I, along with many others, ended up with Professor Salas. He is OK. You definitely do not need to attend his class, just show up for the exam and you'll do WONDERS. (Just make sure you do study, cause your grade will consist of 3 exam grades.)
If I could give this professor a zero in difficulty rating, I would. Posts the terms you need to know before the exam online. Only grades are 3 exams. Study the terms, you'll do fine. No point in showing up to class unless you feel like boring yourself to death listening to a lengthy lecture.
What can I say about Salas? Hes a cool guy and tests are generally easy, but I never showed up to his lectures because all he talks about is sidewalks, roads and how he hates community colleges. More or less if you need to take Salas he isnt bad, takes a while to get to critical information, but mostly talks about sidewalks and not to park on em.
There's only 3 tests; attendance is online and only 5% but you don't have to be in class to get the credit. There's online quizzes from the book but they're really easy. He does a review before the test and goes over most of it but you have to study because he words the questions to make them tricky, he curves them a lot though.
While the professor might not be the most interesting at lecture, as long as you read posted powerpoints youll definitely pass. Overall such an easy class. I never attended class and still got a good grade. As long as you study youll do great. Very understanding sweet professor that unfortunately gets a bad rep for being boring.
I think I stepped into his class a total of 4 times. Once for the first day, and the rest for tests. His voice puts you to sleep, does not take attendance (which really shows later on in the semester as only 20 students show up out of 150), and you can cram for the test an hour beforehand.
Honestly if you need to take politics take it with him. The tests are super easy and you can study one hour prior. You dont have to show up to class because attendance is done online once a week by posting a discussion. If you are pre-med, stem, etc.. with more difficult courses this is the class for you.
Prof. Salas is a great choice for POL 1133.I took it online Don't buy his book that he wrote you wont need it except for like 4 questions. He only has 10 posts and 3 tests but his tests are all in the PowerPoints and he puts a review sheet out before the test. He only opens the test for like a 90 minute window.. only gives solid letter grades.
His lectures are long, boring, and he gets off track. His exams are pretty easy though as long as you study. He posts all the powerpoints so it isn't necessary to go to class. Not very hard.
At the beginning of the semester, there was a technical issue and a lot of students were upset that we couldn't reach him. At first, I was as well but when he explained that he was completely unaware I feel that he handled the situation well, and accommodated everyone as best as possible.
His lectures consist of him occasionally reading off the slides (which are on BB and depending on the day cover sections of one of the two textbooks that are required for the class) but its mostly rambling. Easy 100 every week via discussion post. Skip class iyw but when he gives you the test review really research the terms and youll do fine
There is one group project, but it is a powerpoint, and he is lenient on the assignment if you guys are knowledgeable about what you researched on and if you're somewhat close to the time requirements. The book is used very little, only for a few questions based on the tests, but better to be safe than sorry. He puts out a review for each test.
Mr. Salas is very difficult to understand. I love history but could not understand the basic summary in his lectures. The worst thing about this class is the fact that you must buy 2 books. Why? good question but it is interesting to note that Mr. Salas is the author of one of them. Save yourself $150. Find another professor.
His lectures are scattered, but if you listen he does say interesting things that he experienced and ties it into the class material. There are posts every week, but they're super easy. The class before the exam he offers a review too. If you do choose him, please attend his class, you can tell he gets sad seeing his class empty. He's a gem yall
Class is difficult, going to lectures is kind of pointless, all he does is ramble. The power points are what help the most. There is only 2 tests + final and discussion posts that your grade consists of, so hard to try and redeem yourself if you're not doing too hot. Reading and studying the test reviews is what will help you pass
Salas's lectures usually have nothing to do with our tests, he is heavily opinionated. We have two discussion posts each week (make sure to do them). The best part of his class is that he puts out a review before each test. If I skipped every class I could still to pass. He makes you purchase 2 textbooks for 100+ dollars (including his own book).
Professor Salas is extremely boring and his tests didn't correlate with the reviews given. Each week your attendance is taken by doing 2 discussion posts and it they are an easy 100. Discussion posts and exams are the only things graded, there is no extra credit. I don't recommend this professor, he doesn't teach, only reads off of the slides.
He may be old & boring, but his exams are extremely easy & there are reviews for them. You don't have to show up to class. You can do the discussion posts during that time and not have any hw. If you want an easy A definitely take his class. You also don't need to buy the 2 books he tells you to buy so save yourself hundreds of dollars
Easy Class, moved online cuz of corona...I preferred in-class, just pay attention easy A
Very unorganized. Did not have reading list and threw everything together not by section. Exam reviews just a list of possible subjects and had some questions on exam that were not on lectures or reading. Had to purchase his expensive books. Threatened class many times has forensic proof for cheaters and just felt uncomfortable.
Not a good professor as he is disorganized and does not have a good flow to the class. Politics are second to his opinion and he makes you buy a book he wrote that is very expensive.
I took Salas for a summer online class and it was so easy. We have 2 tests and a final and I don't think he could make them any easier, along with 15 discussion posts for the whole course. Do NOT get either of the textbooks, everything is from the material he posts and 99% of it is in his reviews. Also only does letter grades so you just need a 90.
I took Salas for a summer online class and it was so easy. We have 2 tests and 1 final and I don't think he could make them any easier, along with 15 discussion posts for the whole course. Do NOT get either of the textbooks, everything is from the material he posts and 99% of it is in his reviews. Also only does letter grades so you just need a 90.
Worst professor ever. He is extremely disorganized and his tests were so confusing I couldn't get anything other than B's. His discussion posts are super easy but they hold almost no weight in your final grade so they seem like a waste of time. Don' buy his overpriced book filled with is own opinions. Take a different class!
Essay were graded so easy If you did the study guide for the test you will get an A
Okay first off he makes you buy his stupid overpriced book filled with his own opinions. It is filled with grammatical errors and the profit goes straight to his pocket. Do not take his class he is super unprofessional and you could just take another class. Save your money! If you don't buy the book it is hard to answer some questions.
If for any reason youll need to talk to the professor, take someone else. Also, be aware that he has specific times that he allows for exams for his completely online classes. On Thursday of all days. They arent stable either (two at 5pm, one at 1pm). If you dont need to speak to him for any reason, his setup isnt bad. 3 tests make up 90%.
Dont waste your time with this professor. Extremely unorganized. Tries to profit off college student by having you buy his OWN, POORLY written book. Pop up quizzes constantly that requires you to read his book. Pointless to attend class because he lectures over nothing the exams or quizzes cover. Never was happier to be done with a class
Great professor
Taught about things most of u don't know
Great professor.
Learned a lot from him
Lazy students and extremist conservatives won't like him
Had a few disruptive students in his class but we didn't pay them any attention
Best professor ever
Knows his subject
We learned alot
His book was great
It's entirely busy work, he doesn't teach and his grading format sucks. 5% of your grade is a PowerPoint, 5% of your grade is 8 essays, and 90% of the remaining of the class is exams (3 exams). Exams are based on his book that he wrote that is filled with grammar errors. I do not recommend you to take this course at all. No extra credit no makeups
If you actually decide to read the 5 chapters that the test is over along with the 10+ documents posted in BB before each exam you will realize that this class is A LOT OF READING. 2 tests are worth 60% of your total grade and the final is worth 30. The reviews help drastically if you do them and know how to use Command F.
Overall, the content of the course is useful to know. However, he puts every single piece of material into one folder making it impossible to sort through it unless u use ctrl + F. Best way to succeed online is to copy/paste the power points into a word doc and search thru it for exams. completely stopped giving lectures after the middle of the sem
Very few things you needed to do in this class (exams and discussion posts). If you couldn't afford the MHEducation textbook, don't sweat it. He posts all the content you need in powerpoints. He's an overall entertaining instructor based off his panopto videos and tries his best to make the classroom an inclusive and respectful space.
This class was a mess. It was easy to finish if you were able to find the readings he's referring to. We started online and he was extremely rude to students, blaming us for his disorganization. In person, he's better but he just talks nonsense that doesn't pertain to the class.
Discussion post are due weekly and there are 2 exams, plus a final. My only problem was the disorganization of the content, It made it very confusing where to look for things.
Professor Salas is a good professor and knows his material. He's incredibly passionate about what he teaches as well. Some of the readings were a little difficult throughout the semester, but there weren't too many assignments. Just as long as you read and do the work, you'll definitely pass.
Easiest class so far. The only assignments were 10 discussion posts and the tests were very easy if you watched the lecture and took notes. He is an actual human who enjoys his weekends, so he is unreachable on Saturday and Sunday.
Regardless of how you do on discussion boards, most of you grade comes from 3 tests. He requires you to have the textbook but just rent it from the library, trust me it's not worth buying it. The content were very disorganized, with the material for everything made available in only one folder and lectures feeling like a run on sentence.
The online class was mostly self-taught, which made the whole experience a little tougher. But the study guides Prof Salas provided were VERY good in terms of listing which topics to study. Keep in mind he writes his own questions so there will be a few mistakes here and there. Argue for points back if you think you are right, he's willing to talk.
There were only exam grades and discussion posts grades so if you messed up there was not a lot of wiggle room to fix it. His online network was also not that easy to navigate but watch the lectures, take notes, and do the study guides and you will be good.
Pretty disorganized, I felt like I was wasting my time watching the lecture videos, which were usually around an hour, because he would just read off the slides. He provides study guides for every exam, but they're not perfect. Syllabus wasn't clear which chapters would be on the exams. Good thing they're not proctored. Do NOT buy either textbook.
Liked this course. Learned a decent amount. He's passionate about the subject. It's graded by the exams(MC). Also, discussion boards (easy A). A little disorganized, not much direction, but wasn't bad. Can easily get a high grade, and you can get a really high grade doing the reading/lectures. As a summer course, workload high, so consder that.
Great class and very easy to follow. I just want to write this to let anyone interested in taking this class - DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. It was around $90 and I legitimately did not open it once. He posts all the content and readings on blackboard. I got almost 100% on all exams without the textbook.
DO the study guides and go over the PowerPoint and exams that are easy to pass. 8 essays are all one page and you have a week to complete them. Pretty long lectures but if you miss class just go over the content on blackboard. Also one group project and you must participate for full credit.
Professor Salas wants you to put in the work at your own pace. He provides all the lectures in the first week, and you have until the end to finish. He will not teach you the course, more of self taught. I highly don't recommend if reading and self learning is not your strong suit.
You have 3 tests and 10 discussion posts... thats it. The class is so disorganized and you have to buy the textbook that HE wrote himself but the class is so easy and he is a good man. Take the class, it is not stressful whatsoever and very understanding.
This course was pretty interesting and fun, you might enjoy it if you like political theory and writing/reading. I am not a fan of how he requires students to purchase his book considering it's RIDDLED in grammatical and technical errors, so please, don't give your money to this professor. Besides that, good guy and good class for credit.
This class was fairly easy, but it did require writing lots of papers. The subject itself was not too interesting to me but at the end I found myself intrigued with what we were learning, and it gets you thinking. One thing I will say is DONT buy the textbooks!!!! I survived the semester without them so trust me.
For POL2503 - Online only Asynchronous. VERY easy class. Most difficult part was prof errors w/ due dates in Canvas. 3 modules, 3-4 reflection (your thoughts unless stated otherwise) essays per module about a specified topic, min 2 pages per essay double spaced, 1 test per module. Only accepts assignments via e-mail & is responsive to feedback.
You will have a 2 page essay due every week, but they are extremely easy! He is relatable and gives so many chances to make up work. There is no way to fail this class unless you simply do not go. The tests are so easy; he literally goes over the questions to prepare you. He is EXTREMELY knowledgable and hilarious.
The class is easy if you stay on top of the self-paced content. The professor is knowledgeable, but the course is disorganized. Using unstuck AI and the free textbook can help navigate the material effectively.
Professor Salas was funny at times, and his class was easy, in my opinion. You have eight essays on Supreme Court cases and two exams on the lectures and topics discussed in class. His lectures can be boring at times.
There was a lot wrong with this course that made it frustrating. The dates in Canvas were different from the syllabus, many of the questions on the quizzes were marked wrong even tho I put the answers from the textbook. Exams had multiple incorrectly graded answers that weren't even fixed, he just gave us points back on the NEXT test.
I took this class fall 2024 semester. Do the discussions, they are due the day they come out. Don't miss a single one because it could ruin your grade. The assignments are easy and open ended, however the tests are poorly formulated. Vague wording, loaded questions and opinionated answers are all present in the exams for this course. read the book.
Good professor, you can tell he knows his stuff especially Texas civil rights and history. This class is EASY, but you'll make it hard for yourself if you have high expectations for how online materials and quizzes are organized. I've taken this professor two other times and never scored below an A.
This class is Texas politics in name only. The real curriculum? Reading the professor's self-published rants, guessing what answer he wants on vague exams, and pretending this isn't a one-man echo chamber. Facts won't help you—just memorize his worldview, play along, and don't ask questions. Critical thinking is not welcome in this course.
This class was pretty easy if you did all the work on time. There were 8 discussion posts, and half of them were opinion-based, which was easy. There were 2 tests and 1 final, each of which had 30 questions. He did mess up the syllabus in the beginning, but it wasn't a big issue. His presentations are a bit messy, but tests aren't proctored.
Class was decently easy. The discussions are easy A's as long as you put some effort into it. However, the tests consist of vague questions and things that weren't taught in the PowerPoint. The tests are HEAVILY weighted in your final grade. Each test (3 total) is worth 25% while all 8 of the discussions are the last 25%. No extra credit.
He provides a textbook that he wrote and other materials. The topics on the exams included things that were not given to us. Beware, he locks his exams so you cannot see what you got wrong. But it was open for one day, and we found out the quizzes were graded incorrectly. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
The grade is only based on discussion posts, 2 exams, and the final. There was a book you were expected to buy, but you could get by without it since he also posts PowerPoints. The main downside is he isn't very clear about stuff and the questions on the exams are VERY ambiguous and sometimes just flat out wrong.
Yes you'll need to buy his book. Knock out the discussion board ASAP just because it's due like 3 months just DO IT. Save you lots of time & stress. Exams are actually really easy not proctored. Only got a 94 cause I didn't use a direct quote from the book🤷🏽‍♂️.
He says the textbook is needed but he posts powerpoints based on the textbook so you don't really need it. His study guides didn't include half the stuff on the tests. Your only graded on discussions, 2 tests, and the final. Somethings on the tests might be wrong but he'll fix your grade if you email him. Tests weren't proctored.
I took this course with Professor Salas and had a decent experience. He is kind, understanding, and very responsive when students have questions or concerns about assignments. The course was thought-provoking, though some assignment instructions were unclear at times. Overall, I enjoyed the class and appreciate his dedication to his students.
