This guy sucks. He is rude, arrogant and makes it painfully obvious that he doesn't enjoy his job. Avoid at all costs!
He was not very helpful, he came across like it was a burden for him to teach our class, rude, and belittled you when you asked him a question.
Horrible teacher, makes numerous errors while showing sample problems, not helpful when you ask him for help, doesn't review homework, rarely teaches for the full class period but ends class as soon as hes gone through the notes w/no time for questions.

do not take his class he really sucks
This is the worst math teacher ive had. He tries to finish a section in one day and doesnt like answering anyones questions. He doesnt seem like he wants to be there. He ends class as soon as he can. If you can Avoid taking his class.
He seems kinda shy, but he's really nice and tries to help if you talk to him.
one major problem i had with him is when he assigned little projects (minitabs) he never explained how to do them. and then everyone in the class (literally) gets a 50 on their projects. Also, his tests have alot of errors on them.
I dont like him
Doesnt ever explain WHY you get a bad grade on a project, doesnt even explain how to DO the projects. doesant check his emails, doesnt notice a PAPER hanging by his door for a week. completely worthless
He is the worst math teacher i've ever had.. he doesn't explain anything, seems like class is a waste of time for him. everyday he was late to class. he gave of four particular kinds of tests and then switches for the last chapter with out any mention.
He is not an educator. He seems to think everyone should just get it and if you don't it is not his problem and you should go to the Math Lab and they will teach you.
He was a cool teacher he is just quiet thats all I did fine in his class, and so what if he makes mistakes, he only human for christs sakes!!
I hadn't taken a math course in ten years, did poorly on the placement tests, but he did well refreshing everything I learned long ago. He does expect you to study on your own and ask questions if you don't understand.
While he seems to be a very nice guy, I'm not rating his character or integrity. Mr. Scribner's class always left me confused and a little less confident with my own mathematical ability. I think that his understanding for the subject sometimes blinds him to the needs of his less astute students.
I passed the class, but barely.I did all homework, went to the math lab, even tutoring, but he never stated what to expect on tests(nothing, not even vaguely).Only 10 problems on tests and hardly any partial credit.Poor explanations of lessons.Never used an entire class session or offered help.Very hard
mmm...not too crazy about him. Don't take him if math isn't your best subject. Not very clear on expectations or tests, not good at explaining. Just used powerpoints and zipped thru them too fast. I auffered thru and made a C in his class. I left more confused than enlightened.
i think he did a great job explaining things and was very clear about how to do problems. also he gave good short cuts for things.
He wants his students to pass;however, he is not very good at explaining math. If you like math than i would recomend this teacher. If you dont like math then do not take this teacher.
This is the first math class and first class period I've ever had this much trouble with. He is a very nice guy, and keeps the class open to questions. The problem is the only grade is on tests, and the tests are horribly difficult. On top of that, there is no calculators allowed on the tests.
I took him for Math 04, which was my first math while at this campus. I would not take him for anything higher than Math 04. If you ask him to clarify something, he'll do it. He's a nice guy, but his math classes are difficult. If you like Math, take him.
Always available to answer questions. Presents material in a way that is clear and easy to understand. We could use calculators and tables from the book on tests. He gives excellect review sheets. He gives easy assignments during the semester and they can help your grade if you do them.
I thought he was a good teacher. He gives great notes and plenty of examples for us to look back on, and in class assignments so that if we dont understand he can go over it with us. I would recommend him, i think he is a good teacher.
Horrible emailer.
I'm currently taking his class online, and after only two weeks,I can already see this is going to be tough, even for me,and I like math.He doesn't post anything on Bb,but instead makes us go to his own web page which is entirely too confusing to go through. No prep given for quizzes or tests either. Find a teach w/out minitab in the lesson.
I like him, but he can teaches to fast. He is smart and knows his math. He dosent get to know his students and you can not make up test in his class. Other wise he seams like a nice person, just a fast teacher.
The material in this class can be difficult, but he explains it very well. The tests are not easy, but he give a lot of extra credit.
Im taking scribner right now. He's a really nice teacher. His teaching skills are not that great, but his class is pretty slack. Be attentive, or else you'll have trouble. All in all, if you pay attention and ask questions, youre straight. Really nice guy!
In my opinion he does not know how to teach. We are students that were giving him most of the answers in class. How did he become a math teacher because none of the students say anything good about him especially me. Now I have to repeat this course but glad I have a different teacher
Very good teacher
He teaches to fast and if you don't understand the work he looks at you like your stupid. but over all just keep up with the homework and you should understand, but even if you don't understand the homework you'll prolly spend a lot of time in the math lab. you don't have to turn in homework either.
Mr. Scribner is nice, but he doesn't know how to teach. I learned more from my friend's dad then I did in class. Reviews that he gives before class are great, if you get extra help and are able to solve all the problems. Overall great guy, but he needs to show that he cares about his students learning and needs to learn to teach better.
Do not be discouraged by the rating this prof. has, these students do not know how to recognize a good prof. when they're taught by one; anyway, he's a good prof. he teaches it very well and clearly and will easily stop to help out with questions (even elementary ones) his tests are only tough if you do not do the hmwk nor study, I highly recommend
I feel bad when I see professor that only make life more dificult to students. When you go from precalc to calc is another game your sucess will depend on your proessor teaching skills started around 22 students finished like 7 students. If you want to learn take either Mr.Gallo or Mr. FU
He was a pretty decent teacher. He wasnt has good as others but he seemed like a good person.
This teacher was some days helpful but mostly not. He is a bad teacher and doesnt really know how to explain things so other can understand. His class was really easy but im sure thats just due to the fact it was math 2 and basic addition/
Great Teacher for calculus. Do homework and ask for help and you will get an easy A.
the teacher is greath, really helpful. do ur homeworks and u will get a good grade.
This man is not a good math teacher. He does not teach clear and his tests do not coincide with his lectures. I failed his class n Im taking math 4 over now and Im getting A's on tests. The teacher has alot to do with a grade
pretty good teacher. he is really smart and knows his math, but may move really fast but will answer any questions. and when did dismiising class early become a bad thing?
excellent teacher. taught the material well and was there if you needed any help.
He is the worst professor I have ever had at TCC. I am fairly good at math and had the worst time in his class. He's not helpful at all, his tests are ridiculous and we didn't do any form of review for his final. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone. If you do, expect to live in the math lab. Run away.
I had him for college algebra at Wesleyan. He was the only professor who could get me to understand math! He grades hard and there's a lot of homework, but hey, this is college.
He sucks. He expects Mathzone to do all the teaching for him. Take someone else, seriously.
Horrible is an understatment. I've never had this much trouble with a class and I'm a B average student. I would really just pass on this teacher.
hes great! really clear and he will give you a challenge. i would mos def take him again for a higher level math!
As long as you pay attention, take notes, and study, you'll pass his class. He gives good notes.
okay so attention to all!!do not take him for statistics at odu! he is hard as hell and he doesn't help you at all. he gives reviews that look nothing like the actual test. on tops of that..he doesnt take attendance you cant read his handwriting and he talks so quietly that you cannot understand anything he says so your left confused and aggravated
Nice enough guy, but he always seemed sort of ticked off to be teaching the class.
Mr Scribner was a nice guy, but is very out of touch with his students. He really didn't seem to care if you passed or not. His test were not too hard, but he takes off points for every little thing. I also found that he moved very fast. Like i said, he is a good guy, but not a great teacher. I wouldnt take him for upper level math. JMO
a lot of people dont understand his method of teaching, but then again you have to pay attention as well. i think hes basic, but if you have the courage to ask for help, he'll guide you well..when i say courage, i mean, care enough about your grade & have the maturity to ask.
i think hes an amazing teacher. he lets u out early and makes the work really easy, im taking math three as a refresher, and im def goin to follow him in math. i like that he uses coursecompus its impossible to not get 100 on it :)
The comments below are probably Mr.Scribner himself. His class = dreadful. He is good @ mth but not @ teaching. My class is confused all of the time. He is not a good teacher. If U have accomodations DO NOT take him unless U want ur test back 4wks L8r. Most of the class teaches themselves w/the book. He is the WORLDS WORST instructor. Ull Regret it
Seems to be in his own little world. When you ask him a question answers you as if u should have known the answer (VERY SARCASTIC). He reads straight from the text u basically have to teach ur self to pass. His idea of reviewing is any specific questions if you wanna just practice good luck...he won't do it. Doesn't seem to care if u pass or not.
Mr Scribner is rude and completely unorganized. He rushed through everything and then spent a ridiculous amount of time on the last section. He doesn't seem to know what he's doing every day, he came in and taught the same thing as the day before for ubtil we told him. He takes FOREVER to return work/tests and NEVER responds to e-mails.
I FELT THAT THIS CLASS WAS EXTREMELY HARD.
Finals are over, Im still waiting for my grade. He never returned 3 assignments I took months ago, so I have NO clue what my grades are. He is extremely lazy and rude.He has NO people skills. His class is hard. Take French @ Chesapeake or Pugsley @ VB. Scribner needs to be fired. Im supposed to graduate this week and Im waiting on him.Not worth it!
I dont have all of my assignments either.I am also supposed to graduate and I dont know my grades. His class is really hard. I wish he offered extra credit that would have made me feel better. We do homework on the computer which is aweful.I like to get to know my teachers so they know i care about my grades but i dont think he likes students 2 much
the worst teacher ive ever had. if you need to take some upper level mathematics, STAY AWAY. took him for calc 2 and had to drop it. retook it with dr french from the chesapeake campus and got an A.
Ummmmmmm yeah he sucks. Avoid him. He makes you do homework online wtttfffff this is math class. I don't wanna do math on a computer smh
writes on board word for word out of textbook, i can read, so teach another example... takes points off on test for EVERY THING... got all the answers right on one test but made an 80 because I did too much work?????? computer hmwk sucks..especially if u cant afford internet. I want to be a teacher and his class made me want to drop out of school
Teaches out of textbook word for word. I recomend you dont take this class. Homework is on the internet and is difficult.
This man is the laziest teacher I have ever seen!! Good luck if you have more than one question about something, anymore than that & he will all but ignore you. He takes off for EVERYTHING on the tests, I clearly had the right answers, but he took off for any extra information. Ive had to teach myself to understand the material. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!
Everything that everyone has said about him on here being negative, is true. He makes you feel stupid if you ask him a question and takes off a ridiculous amount of points on tests that are only 10 questions to begin with. He doesn't teach so you're forced to try to teach yourself from the book the whole time.
I did not like this class at all! He thinks that if you need help that's your problem and he's not responsible for helping you. I could not comprehend anything he taught because he taught straight from the book. Do not recommend!
He is the worst teacher ever! Taught from a powerpoint and didnt help at all during class. He made me feel stupid when i asked questions and his tests were pretty hard.
MONOTONE!! BORING!! UNHELPFUL!! CONDESCENDING!! DIFFICULT TESTS!! Don't take his class.
He was the best math teacher I have ever had! I hate math and really don't understand it, but he makes it very clear
A ton of homework and quizes for a developmental class (A TON).
BEST math teach ever! I suck at math so naturally, I dread it. Mr. Scribner though is awesome. He will explain it to me 10 times over happily until I understand. Hmwk and quizzes are all online at home (which I loved b/c I can seek more help) and tests in class match what he just taught you. Plus he is super laid back and nice.
Beware! This guy is lazy and doesn't teach. Was extremely disappointed with him.
I do not see why everyone on here thinks Mr. Scribner is so bad! He is a great teacher and a very nice guy. I took him for Calculus 2 over Summer 2013 and got a B. I highly recommend Mr. Scribner for any high level maths. Don't be intimidated by what other people are saying on here, he truly is a great professor and is willing to help you.
I have no idea why everyone on here is saying he is condescending. I struggle with math and he explains everything so clearly and has never made people in my class feel stupid for asking questions. He is the best math teacher I've had. reasonable amount of homework and tests are not hard if you do the homework.
He's very detailed in course .As long as you do your online homework/quizzes you are good . Very approachable.
Beware! Dont take this teacher. I love math but he made my experience horrible. Very disappointing....
Teaches very fast. He may ask for questions, but doesn't give you enough time to even think of your question! You'll think your doing wonderful, but his teaching can fool you. He shows up exactly on time and dismisses 10 to 15 minutes early. He may act like he cares, but it seems to be an act. I would never suggest anyone to take his classes.
I wish I could give him I higher rating but he is just not helpful in after class assistance. He asks if there are any questions on a topic, but his explanations are rushed. Teaches directly from the book, which is good if you understand a math textbook. Lots of my math lab homework so be prepared. All of the quizzes are online as well.
I had taken Mr. Scribner the Fall of 2014 and should be given more credit and appreciation from these reviewers. Mr. Scribner taught the class very well and was very knowledgeable of the topic. He explained everything in detail like step by step that even I could understand. Thanks very much Mr. Scribner.
I took his class and failed because he READS RIGHT FROM THE BOOK and IS RUDE TO YOU IF YOU ASK QUESTIONS. I came to class everyday and am a pretty smart student and still failed. I'm here to warn you if you are a person that struggles in math then DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. There are many other great teachers at tcc that would be way more helpful.
He NEVER lectured for the full time we met and if you can't take notes I wouldn't recommend taking his class. He gave test reviews, partial credit on tests, and a lot of chances for extra credit. If you work on homework religiously, study for the tests, and participate in class, you will pass. I felt like he went the extra mile for his students.
I hate math, but Scribner is amazing. One of the most kindest teachers, super understanding, and great at explaining. His lectures start with him explaining a method, then doing many examples. Would take for 163 but he doesnt teach
A really great teacher and will answer any questions you have to ask. He gives lots of credit for homework and if you study and do the reviews then you'll easily pass!
I am currently enrolled in MTH174 (CalcII) with Mr. Scribner and he has been more than helpful. I approached him before class on the first day and let him know up front that I took Calc I ten years ago, but that I had been reviewing on my own to prepare. He specifically makes sure that I understand what's going on and always answers my questions.
Oh man, where to start. Hardest class I've ever taken in my life. Test are stupid hard. HIGHLY recommend taking like 12 credits, MAX with this course. I love math and I struggled with him. NO drop test. Your resolve and future ambitions will be tested with this man. Best advice, take someone else.
He is a great professor. Very, chill and laid back. He goes through each problem with us and if there's something we don't understand, he will break it down more and explain. Lots of homework on Pearson lab but only a few tests throughout the semester and the subject itself isn't too hard.
hes a good teacher, im just terrible at math
A great math professor! I've taken a class with him previously, I recommend him for the more advanced mathematics. Open for questions and clarification and he structures graded work well. Keep up with the workload and you should know what kind of questions you'll see on tests and quizzes. Very kind and caring professor, he is a natural in his work.
5 test overall but he drops the lowest one. If you do the homework with the topics covered in class, you will have a greater chance of a easy A. Dont wait till the end to do all the hw.
I took this class during the summer semester. There were a lot of material to go over in a short period of time. Homework was provided, but not required. After class he made himself available to answer questions regarding the homework.
Only grades are tests and quizzes. He grades very hard.
Where to begin. Does not explain material thoroughly. First day of class became frustrated with a few students because they needed further explanation. Told them if they need additional help then what he was teaching to consider dropping the class. After two weeks I dropped his class and luckily taking it next term with a math teacher who teaches.
The only thing that is graded is the tests and quizzes and homework is not graded. He drops the lowest test score depending on your final exam. In his tests calculators are not allowed which sucked and no formulas were given in the tests you have to memorize everything. He rushes the lecture all the time and does probably 5 examples on each section
I absolutely would not suggest him. The material itself isn't hard, but he's a terrible professor. Every class is just lecture heavy and there's no interactive learning or anything. He doesn't give out physical worksheets, so good luck having good notes to take home and practice. Save your energy + time... do NOT take him.
Mr. Scribner was a good choice for Calculus I. He gives homework but does not collect it for grades. Grades are based on quizzes and tests. He goes over lots of examples in class where you can take good notes. He was always available after class for questions.
cool guy but explains stuff hard to where u would not understand and is hard to read his handwriting
What is this English class he just writes definitions on the board all class.
He is a funny cool guy but when it comes to teaching he takes everything out of the textbook gives unnecessary hard problems on test and grades very hard.
Only take Scribner for Calculus I if you know your algebra/trig, and have good study habits. He teaches most of what you need to know to do well on tests and quizzes. Quizzes are easy, but you need to have a clear understanding of the material if you want to get an A on the test. Showing your work matters a lot on tests.
There was no sense of organization. I took his class for an easy A because I had taken the class before. He made the material extremely difficult although it was suppose to be easy. Says he was available, but gave off the vibe that he did not want to help. I would not take him, if I did not have to
Professor Scribner is a horrible professor. DO NOT TAKE HIM. If you end up in his class because of an overide like me, I recommend going to a tutor that is the only reason I passed. Do not take him if you struggle with math he will make you feel stupid. He lack s communication and being a decent person.
You have to put in the work to achieve a good grade with Scribner (Calc 1). His lectures are pretty good and provide MOST of what you need to know to succeed in exams. To know all you need to know for an A's on tests, you must try/do all the homework problems. Lecture attendance is mandatory.
MTH263 Calculus I, I would advise against taking this class unless it is last resort, only at that point he might be decent. Taking this class feels like its an asynchronous class when its not, scribner makes it very hard to focus in class. All the homework is due at end of semester, I highly suggest not getting behind in it.
Professor Scribner does a great job you just have to attend, pay attention, and study. His tests are easy and multiple choice. Just attend class and pay attention. Participate in class and you will do fine. Sometimes he even asks me at the end if I think his lecture was easy to follow, as some students struggle to keep up with his pace.
Very good teacher, but Pre-Calculus is a hard course. If you do the work and pay attention, you should pass no problem. The class is fast paced, so be ready.
(Calc I) Mr. Scribner has a very basic teaching style of explaining the lesson and working out example problems from the textbook. If you have questions either about the lesson or theory behind the lesson, he can confidently answer those questions. Partial credit is given on assessments, but getting an A is an accomplishment.
never responds to emails.. like ever, and tests very heavy. it's easy work just extremely time consuming. very sarcastic & jazzy professor and can make you feel bad if you ask too many questions or if you do not understand something he is teaching. 4/10 recommend.
If you skip class you definitely will not pass. A ton of homework, but it is needed practice to truly learn and perform well on tests/ quizzes. Gives partial credit for the math you do correctly even if final answer is not correct. Good teacher, tough class. His overall rating is unfair in my opinion.
He is a pretty funny teacher, homework every class. VERY fast writer so you need to know your stuff, but he'll always answer your questions thoroughly. He doesn't ever respond to emails though, and if you miss class you won't know whats going on
I feel like past reviews really undermine the kind of prof Mr. Scribner is. Calc 1 was my first math course taken at a college, and it was a breeze. He does give hw after each class, and even though it is due by the end of the semester, he reminds us to finish it while the knowledge is still fresh. Study, do hw, ask questions and you'll do great!
Took Calc I this 2023 spring. seems to teach fast at the beginning of lesson But will elaborate further in next lessons. addresses questions so don't just mumble or mope in your corner. Ask questions to slow down lessons. gives extra credit work to compensate for low grades in tests. Do your hw and ask him about it. will walk you to the process.
He is a very fast talker and writer, He writes each problem on his board but if you're not writing fast enough you will miss it. He overall is a good professor but wasn't a good fit for me personally. Homework every week!
Mr. Scribner is a decent professor when you understand the material. When you dont understand something is the problem. I was using the school provided tutoring, paying for out of pocket tutoring, buying books, going over the homework constantly. All he said was to review pre calc. He skips over steps when going over equations. Id pick someone else
Professor Scribner is a very respectful and kind professor. Sometimes his classes feel like information overload, but he does do a lot of examples in class. NOTES ARE A MUST (at least for writing down examples)
Professor Scribner's style of teaching is very long lectures, but he does tons of examples and goes into depth with explaining. Homework is easy as long as you're paying attention. He is willing to stay later for in class help as long as you communicate. Communicating is key with him! Notes are definitely needed.
Professor Scribner has a straightforward teaching style, but staying engaged is key. The homework is due at the end, so use unstuck ai and the textbook to keep up. With effort, you can do well in this class.
I've always struggled with math, and this was the first A I ever received in the subject, the textbook is the key, he pulls straight from it, so you always know where to look. Answers any questions thoroughly and takes the time to make sure you understand. Incredible teacher. 10/10 absolutely would take his class again.
Class can be very fast paced, so prepare to review a lot. HW was online and wasn't due until the last day of class. HW was 25% of the grade, so make that a priority (I failed to do that). There were 4 quizzes and 4 tests, with an optional final to replace your lowest test grade. The class was fine, just not the most interesting or engaging.
He writes in cursive. You need to buy the textbook to access the homework. Its cheaper to buy the textbook from the website than the bookstore. You cannot have a calculator for tests or quizzes. Do your best to keep ahead of the class or up to date in homework. Have a solid understanding of Pre-Calc and Trig before taking this class.
This teacher taught the material clearly and made the class more enjoyable than most other professors I have encountered. If you put in the time to attend class, understand homework, and ask questions, you will do well in this class.
