He only gives 3 exams and attendance is a must. But you better know the information or you will bomb. He is clear, witty, and enjoyable to listen to. We will tell you what you need to know for the exams. Great instructor, just don't underestimate him.
Semere in himself is a cool guy but the class is hard to follow and what you will be tested on is NOT straight-forward. I am normally a A/B student but I was happy to pull a C in his class. I don't recommend his class at all.

Semere is a very good teacher. His tests are hard and you do have to know your material for the tests. Basically you have to take good notes and study them hard. It is hard though because you have to earn your grade purely through 3 tests.
This class is not as hard as these comments make it seem. If u take notes and can study them u will do fine. There are only three tests and I got 2 high B's and 1 low B, but he still gave me an A in the class. If u cant study, then u should not take this
He's a great teacher. Knows his stuff. He's been all over the world and seen all the things he's teaching. But it is strict lecture. He encourages questions, but no one usually asks. This is the class for you if you're very lecture oriented. Take notes!!!
The class is easy if you study the lectures and if you have a question, save it for after class or he might embarass you right then and there in front of everyone. This guy does know what he is talking and has cool slides of being all over Europe museums.
THE Easy "A" for ART 1 prolly the best teacher for Art 1. Take notes, notes, notes, if u miss a class then copy someones. Notes, lectures, look at some pix in the book then u can Ace the test cuz tests are easy.. GOOD TEACHER
Semere's a great lecturer, good teacher, tops my best teachers list. He is witty, clear in lectures, you learn fast in this class 'coz he is easy, enjoyable to listen to, if you are lecture-oriented.keep track w/notes and those awesome slides, you'll do ok.
TAKE THIS DUDE, HE IS KEWL AND EASY. DO WHAT UR SUPPOSE TO DO and VERYGOOD well happen
Very interesting lectures. NOT an easy A. expect 1 to 2 pages of note taking a class.Try to stay awake in his class because he talks non stop, bringing forth new material every slide. Tests are difficult but if you study hard enough you might get a B.
Great teacher! Not the easiest of tests, but if you study your notes and a bit of the book, u'll get an A, but must STUDY!
Very tough tests. True and False questions are difficult. Out of 100 students only 5 students got an A. Good lecturer but tough tests.
Professor Semere is one of the most intelligent teachers I have ever had. He is always available during his office hours to answer questions. He's really attractive in a "distinguished professor" sort of way. U will learn a lot!
Gettin an A is pretty hard. but easy to get a B. He is roman. He has a Big nose~ talks in accent. u will fall asleep, but dont' pay attetion to what he says it's important, take notes. then ur fine
GREAT Teacher if you're serious about learning. If not, take someone else.First of all,you have to study, attend every class, and take good, DETAILED notes. If you don't read the book, you'll be lucky to get a C. Semere is an expert.
His class was very hard, and you have to take notes, but if your an art major then take it if your not then dont
He's a really good teacher. No push over though. If you're not an art person, you have to study, or else. But it's educational none the less. Good to take with a buddy.
He knows his stuff. I hated art, but after going through his class I have a much better understanding and appreciation for art. DO NOT MISS CLASS! tests are mostly his notes and the slides u see in class. Sometimes lectures can be boring.
Amazing, enthusiastic teacher, interesting but dense lectures. You must do the reading carefully, and you must take extensive notes. A lot of "trick" questions - just be aware, pay close attention, put in the time and you'll be OK. Exams are pre
I took Semere's class in 1997 and because of his enthusiasm and thorough knowledge of art history, he inspired me to become an art history teacher. As a practicing artist, Semere explains every artist's technique so clearly when you look at the art slides
Slideshow + Dim lights = 2 hours of heavenly sleeping
He is a charming old gentleman from Italy. His lecture was fantastic and he is really good at making students laugh. His class is like a TV show to me. BUT the tests are hard. You need to take note carefully and read textbook well.
If you ask him for help on something you don't understand. He really makes you feel stupid. Sometimes you can't understand what he said.
This professor reminds me of a general in the army. He's not very approachable. As a female he acts very Italian chauvanistic. He doesn't smile much. I know there is a kind man somewhere deep, deep somewhere. Maybe with his mother in Italy. Test are tricky. I study 4 hours a day to get my A's
He gives great lectures..really knows how to explain. He really knows his stuff! Best storyteller!! Only has three tests..no papers. Tests are not that difficult as long as you study. I managed an A without having to study everday...just a few days before the test will be fine.

I took his class in 1997 and I called him the "Nazi professor"..He ironed his jeans!! But I LOVED his class. He had a dry sarcastic humor that I loved. I got an A in his class, but you needed to study well. However, if you take notes and pay attention you will be fine. (Shapa and Walker are easier)
His class isn't easy-but great lectures. Very knowledgeable-uses his own slides so you know he knows his s***. You'll learn a lot, he's into art with women breastfeeding. If you get A's he loves you. If you've seen his artwork, I wouldn't exactly call him a "gentleman"...Psychosexual. Great class
semere is such an incredible professor, he completely knows his stuff and gives you incredible history background on the art. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! he may appear intimidating at times, and yes he irons his jeans, but his class is NOT that difficult. getting an A is VERY possible!
At first I thought to myself, "How am I going to pass this class?" Boy was I wrong! His lectures are interesting, plus he adds humor into it. Its an easy class to pass, as long as you do the reading. But other than that, its a very interesting class, as well as himself.
loooooved him!
his class is interesting and i like his humor. but the dark auditorium with slides all period equals to ....ZZZZZ. he packs too much info. on one test. studying for his class made me go insane. there were too many things to memorize.
B4 taking this class I could care less about art. He makes the class interesting and you will appreciate art MUCH MORE. Tests are difficult. GOTO CLASS!! take a note of all the slides he shows in class (star it in the book while he is lecturing) and take EXTENSIVE notes. GREAT CLASS and GREAT PROF
A Fantastic Teacher, I HIGHLY encourage you to take him for an art history course he has. He makes an otherwise boring subject very intersting and fun. Great sense of humor.
Not as hard a class as other students have said. Semere gives you an extensive study guide that covers a lot (verbatim, but not all) of what's on the test. Immensely boring, but clearly passionate about his discipline. So vague about what he wants that I went to his office several times. Easy exams.
very hard class, exams are hard, you gotta study very hard, however the class it self is very informative, and fun, and he is humorous.
Great Teacher! He is helpful, passionate, and hilarious. IF you don't do well in his clas it's because you didn't show up or pay attention. I have done very little studying outside of class and I have recieved "A's" on both tests thus far.
exams are not hard at all. he actually tells students answers before exam. you need to be in the class for the review before exam.
I'm repeat art2 with him because I didn't study at all last time when I took this class. He is by far the best professor I've met.He knows his stuffs, the class is very informative.I really enjoying this class. The exams aren't that hard if you study. No homework just 3 exams.the first two exams consisted 40%of the final grade.
I took art2 in the fall n art1 in the spring, and all i can say is that art2 was way easier. in art1 semere focuses more on the ancient history and less on the art. anyone who takes semere should go to class and take extensive notes. do not miss his test review class! read n study the notes for n A
He is an amazing professor. He knows his subject. Make sure you don't miss his lectures and be on time b/c he starts a minute early. Take notes and read the book. I took Art His. 1 w/ him and I study so I got a B, but I know I slacked on one of the test. There are 3 test and thats it. There is not paper, or homework. His class is fun. Easy Class
Great professor. There are two midterms and the final. You can get a c in the first midterm, a b in the second, and if u get an A on your final you will pass the class with an A. Just make sure you study.
Read the book. Attend every class. He does start early. Every slide is his own photo of the art! He is interesting, not afraid to talk about art's relationship to sex :-) honest about subject. Went to Egypt (spring break) I could hold my own w/da Egyptologist! Semere is that good! In N.Y. at Met Museum,I understood Greek vases!LOVE art now.Easy A.
he's by far the best professor I'm taken@smc he is an art expert tho I only got a C in his class it's because I'm lazy...
one of the best if not the best teacher i've ever had, informative, passionate about info, helpful, but doesnt mess around. He's hilarious. If you study, you'll pass. Test arent hard, but are the sole basis for grade. Final test is 60% of final grade. Take him if you can.
He's probably the best professor at SMC!He knows his stuffs...and getting better and better each semester!!take him if you really wanna learn about art history!!!I so wanna go to Euro after I took his classes!!!
he is a very sweet teacher, but dont be mislead by the comments on this page...study very hard!!! i have never studied so much in my lifetime! i took art 1 and art 2 with him and got an A in both...but it was difficult! he is very passionate when it comes to art... and sex! :]
gives lots of information, you need to remember alot of stuff for the test. he gives helpful test reviews though. you need to be there on time and try not to skip class. take good notes if you want to pass the class. he loves blonde babes, so to the blonde ladies out there if you take the class make sure he notices you, use it to your advantage. i lucked out, brunette, but i got A's in both classes.
No one can teach Art History with passion like a native Italian!...Lots of nuance and insight. Accent is charming, never an issue. This man has class and professionalism. Arrive early for his lectures. READ The Book!..it will help a great deal with the tests. Highly recommended.
AWESOME professor, maybe the best i've ever had, take him if you can, focus mainly on notes, book is cool, but focus more on every single thing he says, that'll help you get a's in his class
Fantastic teacher! His lectures are inspiring and his accent alone is enough to make you continue coming to class. Study the lecture notes and make sure you come to his reviews. I found it helpful to underline every word he spelled out and wanted the class to remember because every single one was on his exams. Highly recommended!

He's an extremely nice guy and will help you if you need to clarify some information. But, this was a really difficult class! The tests were very hard and worth a lot of your grade! The first two are each 20% of your grade, and the final is 60% of your grade! Only take this class if you are actually interested in art history! Definitely not easy!
I've taken both of his classes, and this is what I can tell you: A very detail oriented class led by a charismatic professor who can produce a funny and interesting story at moment's notice. The only thing to worry about are the tests, which shouldn't be a problem as long as you take good notes. Good note-taking is a MUST for Art History 1 and 2.
currently takin,Guy knows wat he's talking about, shows all slides entire class which r his own. 3tests,2midterms & 1final. Alot notetaking, pay attention& underline everything he spells out.Basically gives u midterms Q's & A's. ALOT of memorization. Not easy but not hard. Attend every class,Sugg:take a later class.Very passionate and grreaat teacher.
wonderful professor knows what hes talking about gives you some really cool info that you probably wouldnt of learned anywhere else.if i could id take his class again it was very enjoyable!
PEOPLE semere IS NOT HOT! EWW!!! anyways class pretty interesting if u pay attention. I suggest taping the lectures. It will probably help a lot more bc he goes REAL fast. Funny guy. Nice pictures. But tests oh man, STUDY!!!!!!
Terrific teacher and all-around brilliant man when it comes to anything related to art. Semere is a nice distinguished professor type guy. If you study and do the reading you will do fine in this course. Make sure you buy the book and read the sections that are assigned to you. Don't be lazy!
Best class I've ever had at SMC. Semere is very knowledgable about the subject and has an excellent teaching style. Funny, passionate, serious. Loved going to class. Extreamly hard tests. Make sure you know EVERYTHING: notes, book pictures, dates, people. Never studied so hard in my life. If he knows you're trying hard, he'll cut you some slack.
Pretty hard class until you figure it out. I got a C on the first midterm, failed the second one. For the final I taped the review and what do you know...all the questions from the review were on the test..im talking 75%..if i would of taped both the reviews for the midterms, i would of got an A. I got a C in the class cuz i didnt figure it out til
Very good teacher. I took his class during summer and it was great. His lectures are great, and to get a good grade, read the book, and take good notes. He has reviews in class before the test and most of what he reviews is on the test. Very fun teacher. Got out with an A. Best teacher for Art history classes. Highly recommend him. 100%.
I LOVED that class. He isa funny and chill teacher. He's a very smart guy, and dresses very funny. But yea, read the book and take notes...esp. when he goes over what's going to be on the test. I would've gotten an A but I took him in the morning and was too sleepy and numb to put enough effort in taking good notes and listening...still got a B.
Think of those movies where the students are filled into a lecture hall and the prof flips from slide to slide without really talking to the students, and you have this class. Show up pay attention and you will do ok, don't however expect him to know who you are or care who you are.
Semere IS the renaissance man he speaks of so avidly in class. He uses slides and his lectures are precise. Pay attention, take rigorous notes, and you might not even need to read the text. Three exams, nothing else. Also, his witty observations would make anyone laugh. I'm definitely looking forward to another class with him. The man is brilliant.
Tape recorder comes in handy. Tons of things to memorize unless you're into history.
Easy class if you have a voice recorder with you when he reviews the test. Slides are a bit tough to remember. Very helpful and gives you valuable hints during the exams. Interesting Class.
This guy is awesome. His class is based off of three tests and he gives you all the answeres before hand. if i went to the class i would have gotten an A!! lol. He's hot, his accent is sooo sexy!! it makes me want to paint him nude!!!
Amazing professor, very passionate and full of information. On some subjects he gives too much info and on others he's very vague so read the book. The class isn't difficult, you just have to attend class to know what artworks he's using on the tests. The slide identification is easy, he doesn't ask for many dates, and the muliple choice is simple.
He is a good teacher and is funny. Don't miss the class because you will never catch up again.

Has a sense of humor. The class is fun and he definitely knows his stuff. But I hated his tests. Most of the Qs being T or F. Really need to know the 'history' aspect & how to relate one piece to another. Final = 60% so make sure to get it together by then, it'll basically give you your grade. Got a B but was really close to an A.
His class was definitely very tough, cant be late for even a min, or else you'll miss all the potential clues and topics for the exam. However, i absolutely loved attending his lectures, very organized, clear, and INTERESTING!!! Cream de la cream... P.S. Not an easy A! Prepare for a lot of studying materials, which u can only get in-class!
A very good teacher, but not an easy A... please take good notes and attend every class. He goes over all the potential test materials in class lecture... Therefore, class attendance is very important if you want an A ^.^
I came into the class with only a little interest in the subject, now i have tons!! hes an interesting guy, make sure to take good notes and pay attention, lectures are key. tests arent easy though, study details, maybe use a tape recorder. either way great class, great prof, semere has great witty stories for every subject & i love the accent!
He repeats alot...kind of funny
Full-time speedy lectures; mostly names/dates/and terminology. Art-1 is topped with extra chapters from Art-2,just because! Each of 3 tests has ~110 Q & slides designed to trick U instead of finding what U know. So, if U’re good with computing lots of blank info U’ll do fine - maybe. I got B as I got board & enraged with the stupid robot method.
he is really fun awsome guy. realy knows what he is talking about. he is funny. he is very intersting. the tests are easy if you take good notes. he even gives you answers to some of the questions prior to the test. awsome guy best art history teacher i have ever had!
awesome instructor, one of he best ive had, he's just awesome. write down everything he says in lecture, and youll be fine, he's great.
Possibly one of the best teachers I have ever had. He's passionate about the subject and gets more in depth than the book (but it's for you, not for his tests) 3 tests, no homework, no papers....& the tests are super easy. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND him. He's super funny too...
It's not the easiest class. There is a lot of memorization that comes with it. Semere is a great lecturer and prepares you well for the tests through his lectures. the Final is SUPER easy. He pretty much gives you the answers.
Doesn't he look like Dracula? I keep wondering if all that lore about vampires and daylight might be wrong, or has he developed some technology that allows him to exist in sunlight. anyway, he clearly knows his stuff and enjoys teaching. Reccomended.
great teacher!!!!class is very easy, anyone who doesnt think so shouldnt be in college!!!3 test review sheet covers most of the exams u only have to memorize a few pictures...
Professor Semere is a great teacher. He is passionate in teaching and has a great sense of humor. He is quite easy with effort and attending class, showing up for the review, listening to lecture will help you out ALOT. I recommend buying a Digital voice recorder so you will be able to hear the review questions becuase they will be on the tests!!
Prof. Semere is a pretty amazing professor. He has wit and makes the class laugh often. He pretty much reads the test to the class before the actual test day so that takes a load off, but it still is a lot of information to memorize; make sure you have a recorder! Textbook is vital.
Professor Semere is definitely one of the best Art History professors at SMC. I am an art history major and loved his class. But even if you aren't that major, he is still a great lecturer. Read the book, attend class, and study for his tests, and you should do find. Highly recommend his class! :D
he is far off the COOLEST & funniest art history teacher. he knows what he is talking about, and he speaks i think more than 4 languages.he is straight out awesome, you will NOT be bored in class if you take him.
Not my favorite teacher. His lectures are somewhat boring and his slides are not always that great. Don't even think about asking a question in class or he'll give you a lot of attitude. He does, however, want you to do well and gives away a lot of the exam questions, so it could be worse
You cannot fail his class! His reviews are the test answers, don't take notes but record it-he goes super fast. Definitely recommended for non majors.
This guy is a machine! Its pretty incredible that he went all around the world and brings us original photos of every famous masterpiece. Passionate, interprets the art, points out a lot of nuances. Its like watching a good history channel documentary.
BEST ART HIS TEACHER EVER! This guy is so good. He knows soooo much about art his it's crazy. He's really been to all the places he talks about so he really knows his stuff. He really funny to. He makes little funny comments and uses funny words. Has the whole class laughing. Makes stuff way more interesting. Tests are hard so study!!! Take mario!
He's knowledgable on the subject and holds very clear lectures accompanied by photoslides. The class was very straightforward: 2 tests, and 1 final. No homework, quizzes, nothing else. It is true that he vocally reviews most/all of the test questions prior to the simple true/false exams. Bring a voice recorder for them.
He is THE best art history teacher ever! He makes you appreciate art so much, he is so intelligent and he traveled so much <- you will see him in his slides. He is passionate about his teaching and he actually wants his students to ACE THE CLASS. EASY A!
The best Art History teacher! Slides are from his own experience & camera, has humor, and is willing to help students. Be sure to attend class. BUT unlike what all the previous raters say, from this semester he doesnt say all the test Qs and answers anymore. Know your material.
Professor Semere is so funny and intelligent! His lectures are really entertaining. He gives some test answers prior to the test, but only about half of them, so make sure to read over your notes carefully. He doesn't enforce attendance strictly, but it's important to attend lectures if you want an A.
What a wonderful class! I never thought I would like Art History, but Semere brought it to life for me. Although it is hard to stay awake in his early morning class (with all the lights dimmed for slides), Semere is an elegant and incredibly knowledgeable lecturer, with the Italian accent to match. Not an easy A, but worth the work.
LOVED this class. Great art history class for the non-major. Not an easy A, but again it's worth the time and effort. Very intelligent professor who knows his stuff. Makes the class fun with his great sense of humor. Attendance is mandatory and you WILL need the book. Tests based on lecture, take good notes to ace the class. 2 tests, and final
Great class. If this is a required class for you TAKE HIM! It is not easy but he literally tells you what is on the final a few days before. I highly suggest recording his lectures. He is awesomee!
Typical art history class. He often makes dark/sarcastic jokes that most people wouldnt get during the lecture, but I find that pretty amusing. He is very easy going. Just make sure you take notes and study for the test. His lectures are very clear and easy to understand. Great teacher
If you need to take Art History for your GE, take him. He is clear and passionate. The information is compact and fascinating. Lots of it though - don't miss a class and take good notes to ensure an A. Your grade is only based off of 3 tests. But it's a great class, definitely recommend him.
Literally the ONLY downside of this teacher is that his voice is very calming and relaxing. The content is fascinating, but its hard to resist napping to his voice. Just bring a coffee to class and you'll be fine. Fun fact: Most slides are from his summer vacations, and he compares his height to the monuments. He's hilarious!
His class is pretty interesting if you're actually interested in the material. Pretty humorous guy. 3 Tests, which include midterm and final. Attend class and take notes and read the book!
two exams 20% and one final 60%. your grade depends on the final. very knowlegable he knows his stuff and his slides are from his trips over the countries. i realy liked this class. if you like art you will love it. you need the book and take notes. not easy but managable. got A
Take him, he is amazing! Fun, intelligent, he knows what he's talking about, he has been there! If you want to boost your GPA, take him. EASY A.
He is really great. Every lecture is full of passion. all the slides are personal photographs. no homework. just three tests. weighted at 20% 20% 60%. very little overlap. the test is fairly easy. its mostly True or False. Overall he is a great professor just dont talk in his class.
He is a great professor! I would take him again. No HW, 3 tests which are only true or false questions, slides are personal pictures. Ridiculously funny and a sophisticated teacher. Pure awesomeness!
Great professor! I would take him again. Changed my life - major is now Art History! 3 tests (True/False & Multiple Choice & Slide Identification). Well traveled, incredibly knowledgeable, funny and very accessible. Highly Recommend!
really great class. but you gotta study study study. no homework only three tests count for entire grade. I got a C but i really didnt study enough.
Semere is awesome. Anyone who does not get at LEAST a B in the class doesnt attend the lectures. Getting an A is pretty easy as long as you dedicate a day (8 hrs)of studying before tests. There are only 2 tests no hw and 1 final. The class is so interesting and he is so funny. Be at every lecture buy the textbook and use it when you study.Take Him!
This is not an easy A. His lectures are not organized well in my opinion. Grade is composed of 3 tests but you really do have to study for them and read the book.
I've never enjoyed learning so much from a single teacher before professor Mario Semere. He's not only a great teacher but he's also a great person in general. And he's also very well traveled which makes his lectures even more interesting. My suggestion is for you to bring a some sort of a video recorder to class - not audio, but video. Good luck!
Be sure to take good notes and bring your book with you to class to remember what pictures he showed. He tells you what will be on the test a couple classes before. Do not miss a class. You need to study to get an A. exam 1-20% exam 2-20% final-60% He is a good teacher and knows A LOT about art history.
Semere is a great professor overall. His lectures are very interesting, he is passionate about teaching! Do not take him expecting an easy A only because there is no homework and there are 3 Exams. Attendance is a must because he covers A LOT in his lectures and you must read the textbook in order to pass. Take him if you want to challenge yourself
Pretty miffed at how this course went. He is hard understand at times and just lectures, no real opportunity to ask questions or raise concerns. In hindsight, I would have not taking this course!!
Hate Art History and Semere did try to enlighten me on it, but to no avail. Would not recommend him to anyone who doesn't love art otherwise you will fall asleep in class. HA.
Don't recommend him at all. Grade is based on 3 exams which sounds good but are really difficult because they barely relate to lecture. Easy to fall asleep in class and no chance to ask questions or anything. Wish I hadn't taken this class because I ended up with a C. Take any other Art History professor if you can. You can thank me later.
I learned a lot fast, and was interested at all times. my personal life was a little chaotic, but he worked with me. Art history was fascinating, most of it. mind you, I took gd 1,2,3, lettering, & art history 1 2. I still to this day use what I learned in lettering. He was a good guy.
I was surprised to find that Semere is still teaching. I took Commercial Photography at SMC back in the 1970's and took every art class that I could. Semere got me excited about the history or art, because it excited him. I was a Vietnam vet and I ate up all that I could get as I was driven to learn all that I could. I also liked his art work.
