Tests are a bit confusing and she gives alot of reading
Must read, LOTS of details, explains nothing in lectures, pointless group work
Very easy with summer classes, easy A.
this lady really sucks. As a whole i learned nothing that will benifit me in life. I have never taken a test that was formatted in such a foolish way. i ended up getting a B in her class, but every day i was so bored i felt like blowing my brains out.
awesome teacher, one of the best i've had here so far.
Dont actually have to show up to class to get a good grade. 2 take home tests and one presentation plus a personal project. kinda boring but really nice woman, very passionate about subject
I liked her at first, but she is an unfair grader, i feel like this class was a huge waste of my time
Awful teacher. Don't take Prisons in America with here, you will regret it.
take it during the summer..the films are cool and she knows so much about CJ. the workload is really reasonable and lots of XC.
kinda interesting class but she is boring - tests are cool format but hard

Awesome teacher. Knows what she is talking about. tests not hard, and you get to choose what you want to do(essay, multiple choice.)
this teacher is the worst... she isn't all that helpful to her students. her test are hard and structured badly. class isn't as interesting as it may seem. don't take her word for anything, you will regret it in the end! DON NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER!
I think she is a wonderful teacher. If she thinks you dont like her class, she notices. Teaching about domestic violence is something is passionate about and I think you have to admire that in somebody.
Relatively easy if you take her during a minimester. No readings required. Somewhat egotystical, and a kinda hard grader. Likes class participation, but isn't responsive or insightful to questions and comments.
She is awesome. Very talented woman. Extremely smart. Tests are fair and not too hard. Classes are interesting, not boring. Has a sense of humor and a personality. Can talk to her on a personal level as well as a professional level. Highly recommended.
great professor, but hard class, only take the class if you have to. She is really nice and helpful they are just hard tests
I had her for a minimester course called Black-White Relations in America. I thought that she was a pretty cool lady and very fair with the grades. She doesn't like you to just sit there and listen. She notices if you don't participate.
Her tests are a little hard, but she's a pretty good professor. The material wasn't too bad, and she made class interesting. This isn't a class just to take for fun though because there is so much material to be covered. Also, there's a lot of reading (2 books)
great teacher!! knows A LOT about what she is teaching. for theories, she laid everything out for you. very easy to follow. three exams and a paper, if i remember correctly. her test can be a bit tough, but if you go to class and read you will be fine. no trick questions.

Doesn't take attendance but you must turn in a summary after basically every chapter assigned. You have to read to novels and write papers on them too. The classes and lectures are boring and go nowhere, you will be sure to fall asleep.
Teacher is awesome. She's laid back and very knowledgeable. She has a lot to share and is just overall a great teacher. Def recommend taking her classes.
What a waste of time! Class was very unstructured and I didn't get much out of it... I'm going into the DV field and I feel like I have nothing to show from this class
She is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She knows alot about the subject and makes class interesting. The only thing I didn't like was that she's too preoccupied with participation. She was always trying to get everyone to speak up and it took away from the class.
Wonderful lady, very passionate about teaching. She is one of the most intellegent individuals I have ever met in my life. Have taken every class she teaches except one (that I am signed up for next semester). I especially recommend her Domestic Violence class. Not an easy A but you'll love her.
CJ and films is such a boring class. Even though there are no tests, it seems pointless to come to class. She puts a movie in, leaves the room, then comes back at the end and asks us to write 5 "real" things and 5 "reel" things. A few projects and papers, but I am not learning anything! A ditzy lady
You would think Criminal Justice and Film would be an easy one right? well, maybe... she is very knowledgable on the topic and the movies are fun to watch. But she is simply unclear about what she wants. there are 2 papers, she does give tuns of e.c. and NO TESTS!!! oh, and dont forget the popcorn!
second class I have had with her, she is same in both Prisons and Writ.Tests are easy if you study. You choose what parts of the test you want to do.Papers are easy, one a week from text and a few larger projects like police report and legal brief.Lectures seem pointless and off bubt do help on test
lets you resubmit papers. tests are pretty easy because you pick which questions to answer. memorize all the definitions in the chapters and your notes from class. lots of extra credit. easy A if you are a pretty good writer, do all the assignments, and are good at memorizing.
Unless you know her or have taken her a lot, dont expect a fair grade. I busted my butt, but didn't get any papers back. We didn't take any tests, so I assumed I was getting an A. Wrong, B-. With no explanation. Don't waste your time
Very passinate in the Field of Criminal Justice. I have taken both Prisons in America and Women in Crime from her. If you do the work as she tells you you'll do well. She's an excellent source for information.
the class itself was semi-easy. except for the fact that you have a paper due every week and 3 major papers. she doesn't teach at all or know what she's talking about. it seriously is a waste of time.
Most unclear teacher Ive had. No explanations or guidelines on projects, assignments or grades. Displays a lot of attitude. Made an interesting class a pain to go to. Acts like she knows everything
I feel she is an excellent professor! You should be warned that she expects self-motivation. She will not give you exact instruction b/c she wants you to have freedom. You have to read the text as she doesn't lecture on it, but tests the material. She brings a lot of real-life examples to ampilfy the lecture. Also she is the extra credit queen!
I took this class during the minimester and was able to get an A-. Had an 1.5 hour presentation plus 5 five page papers. A lot of work in so little time, but well worth it. Interesting class. Had many speakers. Teacher doesnt lecture, however, huge femenist!
i heard really bad things about her, but she is actually pretty cool. she just doesnt like the typical towson kids who do nothing. has very stong opinions and is interesting. she could be a bite clearer about what she wants. hard to contact. great class thou
PROS: Overall a good class. Learn many interesting things, and subjects were kept fun with group discussions. Also, work is not terribly difficult, but makes you think all the same. CONS: Will overwhelm you with hardcore feminism. Syllabus and tests are incomprehensible, and she doesn't seem to understand this. Thinks others opinions are insane
8 small papers, 4 major papers, 3 tests, and a final. Throw in the fact that she barely teaches at all, and it makes it rather tricky. I don't want to give her a negative rating, because it actually wasn't too bad. Her grading must depend on what mood she happens to be in because it is very inconsistant. Overall, not too bad.
Great teacher. Took her for Special Topics in Domestic Violence and learned much more than I thought. Three tests (which are easy if you actually study the information she gives), two critical analysis, and a group project. Highly recommended.
One of the worst Criminal Justice professors at Towson. She has 3 papers, 1 presentation, 1 book report, 2 test, and a final. She does give alot of extra credit which was the only reason people passed this class. There is so much work you feel like your back in high school. Doesent teach anything but the whole textbook is fair game on tests.
Took crim. justice outside the classroom with her and it was boring as hell. There are no tests but just a service project which is community serive-that is all ur grade. Didnt learn anything, vague about what she wants, and a pointless class. Dont take it! Crim Just n Film, I heard was easy and to take it in the summer.no tests/just movies.
Crim n Film: doesnt teach. just a movie every night, write a paper about it. Annotated Bibliography takes forever to do and group proj. Not a bad class just time consuming. plus she is very moody
no tests, you watch a movie every night and do a paper on it. Half the time the movies are outdated and boring. Pretty much expect to be there all night. Powerpoint lectures are pointless. Group project a pain, you have to write a individual 10-11 pg paper but and do 10 min presentation. Prof. very moody and NOT clear at all.
Took prisons and women&crime with her. DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU ARE MALE. If you have a phallus, she does not like you and everything you say is wrong. There are some exceptions if you admit to her that your gender is evil. Tests are nonsense and she will tell you your opinion is wrong on essays requiring it unless you are female, then you get a B
Tough class, however its a great class and a great teacher. Take it if you want to learn, you just need to put effort into the class.
She's tough but if you put effort into the class, your grades will show. THE most helpful prof in the entire college.
No clue why everyone says shes moody. Shes pretty straightforward about what she wants and as long as you give it to her you'll do ok. I'm taking her again for Dom. Violence in the Spring. She teaches half the CRMJ dept so you will probably take her eventually. Two critical analysis, a handful of quizzes, and two exams, also gave extra credit.
women and crime: she a cool prof highly opinionated but who isn't. She does not come down on males, but to a male I guess it could seem like it. she does teach a lot of crmj class so get over it, you'll prob take her. She not bad at all. Clear on what she wants, and gives a few xtra credit assignments
A nice and funny teacher. Not a whole lot of work and it is not very difficult. Most of the tests come from readings but you can pick what you answer. She also likes you to relate your papers to your reading, you will get a better grade.
required 2 in class presentations. 1 midterm .1 final. and a couple papers. one is a critical analysis of a book. didnt like the class presentations once a week becuase my classmates were teaching me, instead of the teacher teaching .
required 2 in class presentations. 1 midterm .1 final. and a couple papers. one is a critical analysis of a book. didnt like the class presentations once a week becuase my classmates were teaching me, instead of the teacher teaching .
Very nice teacher. I agree with the presentations not being useful.. we had a presentation once a week provided by the students. Discussion is mandatory. will also allow you to re-submit papers for a better grade. it's hard to come across teachers who actually care about their students grades. Thank You Cockey
This class was a waste of time. This professor is not helpful, does not get you interested in the class, and does not help you connect the films to your readings. The idea is...go to class, watch a movie, go home and read, and write a paper. I did not learn a single thing from Professor Cockey.
10 analyses, 2 activity papers, 1 oral presentation, 1 annotated bibliography, and a final (does not go over what will be on it). She can be nice, but she's also a very harsh grader. Would not take her again.
She expects a lot of her students. The lectures are pointless. The textbook is basically just statistics of domestic violence and your peers teach you about the chapters. Nice professor. Confusing class.
Very knowledgeable of the course material. Harsh grader but as long as you cover what is asked, you will get a good grade. Very helpful outside of class. No-nonsense kind of teacher. 5 current event papers (2 pages each), 3 analyses of books, and one final. Pay attention and you get good grades. Love this teacher!
One of my favorite classes I've taken at Towson was Crime & Film with Professor Cockey. I enjoyed going to this class every chance I got. I saw some of the most intersting films. The text book is mandatory so make sure you read it when you are doing your analysis on the films. Chill class and nice, helpful professor.
This class was easy, attendance not mandatory, you write three research papers based on three novels. You make up the components your midterm and final and decide what you want to get graded on. Easy grader. I learned A LOT in the class
Very nice and very knowledgable about the topic, however class is very loosely structured. Half the time you can't tell what is important info that will reappear on the test and what is simply anecdotal. She's also not very specific about exactly what she expects in the 3 papers, but she's very helpful if you meet her in office hours.
I'm taking Cockey for the third time right now and I love her. She can be intimidating, but if you make an effort it's fine and she's extremely nice. She knows the subject and is there if you need her! She also lays out her expectations very blatantly. There are no surprises.
Absolutely hated her. Her syllabus is very unclear and she always came across as a snob. I struggled really hard in that class and she knew it but wouldn't do anything to help. VERY harsh grader and I would avoid at all costs.
Class is interesting BUT you will hardly learn anything in class that is on the tests. No lecture, she just tells stories. You have to read the entire book if you want to do well. A lot of papers. She's a fair grader and lets you rewrite if you don't do well. This class requires a lot of work and studying so if you want an easy A, don't take this.
She is a very fair grader. I honestly believe everyone who didn't like her probably didn't put in as much effort as they believe they did. She likes you if you try hard. Take her classes. You will learn a lot if you are a serious student.
Took her twice and am taking her again for domestic violence in the summer (1 week long course from 9am-5pm). BEST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD.. EVER. At first she's kind of intimidating but after you get over that I swear you'll really enjoy your time with her. Classes aren't challenging as long as you just do your work.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! She is no BS. Knows so much about all things criminal justice. Cockey is so inspiring and just an all around great teacher. You will learn a ton and if you give your opinion, you will get an A. She appreciates participation. Had DV over the summer, WELL WORTH IT! Two papers, no exams- use textbook.
I've had her for Interpersonal Violence, and CRMJ and Film. Interpersonal Violence class was more challenging for me. It required some group work,an informal group presentation, and writing. She encourages class discussion. She assigns papers based on the book and articles. Overall I enjoyed her CRMJ and Film Class, but not Interpersonal Violence.
Pretty easy A or B. She does require papers but gives no busy work. Mid-term and final are take home. No other tests or quizzes. She requires reflections (about 1-2 pages a piece) but most of the reads are easy, informative, and interesting. I've taken her twice and plan to take her again!!
I love her! I'm a horrible test taker, but the way she sets up the exam was SO fair. I have never said this before but I enjoyed taking her tests. I knew what to study and what to look for. If you do your work, and are a good student, you will do great.
Amazing teacher! Kept class interesting! Would take again!
Coolest Prof ever, easy tests and papers, and interesting and relaxed lectures. Have taken tons of classes with her and she's awesome.
she expect you to write all the details about what every she asks on the test. i swear, i usually don't write ratings on rmp but this class.. well the way how she grades and teaches is so bad and so hard. if you are not a good writer, do not take.
Take her! She's on of the BEST teachers at Towson. Some people don't understand what she wants--- and FAIL TO ask-- so they come on here and bash her acting likes she's so hard. Don't listen to ratemyprofessor with this teacher. She's like that 1/10000000 that's actually really good and not ridiculously hard as she's made out to be!
6 quizzes (your lowest quiz is dropped), Midterm, Final, One ECA on a book and a Create-a-criminal paper. Class is out of 500 points. Quizzes are 20 points a piece and everything is else it out of 100. I got a C in the class though, only because I didn't do one of the papers.. She's my fav teacher so I'm a little bias lol.. She's the best.
Cockey comes off as intimidating, but if you talk to her outside of class she is really not intimidating at all. She tells it like she sees it-- no fluff. You need to be a good writer to get a good grade. If you get a bad grade on your first paper, go and see her and she will give you feedback.
Cockey comes off as timid at first, but once you get to know her, she is awesome. I took her criminology class focusing on Victimology and it was very eye opening. She has a lot of personal experience with working in all parts of the corms system. She assigns two big papers, and has two tests, along with portfolios. I recommend taking her.
Cockey is honestly one of my favorite professors at Towson, shes intimidating but if she can see your effort in the class, she'll do anything to help you. She respects students with opinions and encourages everyone to speak their mind in class. I've learned so much from her and this class has been really eye opening. TAKE HER IF YOURE A CRMJ MAJOR!
I'll be honest, I hate Towson University & I wish I never transferred here. Mostly because the professors are fake (they CAN lie to you & even if you have proof, nothing happens.) That being said... Mrs. Cockey is as real as it gets. She wont lie to you, in-fact she'll be quite frank with you.
Took this class first summer session 2016 , cockey is a great teacher.. you just cant be lazy
Makes sure you read the book, she does NOT go over the readings in class. She's extremely unclear about what exactly she wants from her papers but she's willing to help if you ask questions.
Best professor ever. I had her for CRMJ 348 and CRMJ 353. I am going to be taking her CRMJ 331 next semester. She will give you so much help if you go her and her class is easy as long as you pay attention and participate! Definitely take her if you are a Criminal Justice major.
For the most part she is an easy going teacher, she's not big on quizzes/tests but you do ALOT of reading and papers. As long as you can handle that her classes are an easy pass!!
Professor Cockey has a different teaching style. She doesn't use powerpoints and just lectures from memory which was hard for me. 2 papers, 6 quizzes, midterm and a final. There is a lot of writing in this class, no multiple choice questions - ALL short answer!! Overall, she knows what she's talking about & I learned ALOT
Shes funny. Ill give her that. No technology, besides email, so essentially you never know your grade :). You can write a full essay (12 pages), with valid citations and still receive a D or F because idk. Her tenure has seeped deep in her veins by this point. If you want to graduate NEVER and I mean EVER take this class. Destroyer of confidence.
Prof. Cockey is not an easy professor. She may low key insult or offend you she's just very blunt. You read 3 books and do ECA reports which were so hard for me but I did better on each one. I began the semester with a D and somehow managed to pass with a B. Show up & take notes bc she's not into technology.
shes a really nice professor! she worked in a prison most of her life so she has some good stories to tell. Doesnt really use tech and is a very laid back, independent class in my opinion. She tells you what she wants, and you basically teach yourself like you would in a real life job setting. She doesnt baby you and take you step by step.
Cockey doesn't use powerpoint or blackboard which is certainly stressful but she is extremely knowledgable and engaging when she lectures, she encourages participation and will acknowledge that later when grading. I took the once a week, 3 hour class and passed with an A from showing up and kind of trying on assignments
She has been teaching at Towson for close to 50 years and has tenure running through the veins and comes off as intimidating but she is extremely knowledgeable in Criminal Justice. She is not tech savvy and uses no textbook or blackboard. Coming to class is a must to get notes but overall the class is not difficult, just have to put in the effort.
I took her for theories and film and both times she was a tough grader. Films: heavy papers weekly, two exams. Theories: weekly quizzes, three papers, and two exams. You will learn a lot but if you have a stacked course load dont take her. For films I was writing 10 pages papers weekly. For films I was taking quizzes weekly.
Don't take this class worst professor ever she is really petty to begin with. seems just like another old school petty professor. does not provide students with resources from a book nor do we use a textbook. she goes based of PowerPoints she makes and they are not useful with a lot of mistakes. really rude, does not give you the grade you deserve.
If I would have known this professor was going to be like this from the jump I would have rather not have enrolled in this class it was a waste of my time and effort. Don't even bother enrolling in her classes you'll just struggle and regret it. Don't say I didn't warn you smh.
Worst professor ever and Does not even know how to use technology. Harsh Grader Shouldnt be teaching and should Retire. Does not respond to emails so unprofessional. Even if you give it your all she still prevents you from getting the grade you want takes off points for the fun of it.
Great teacher! Professor Cockey cares about your grade but will also let you fail if you arent participating/turning assignments in. Turned in a paper almost every week but had two papers become optional for a break.
