EASY TO UNDERSTAND, NO SUPRISES
Great teacher and really interesting!
wonderful class, need to come every day and study, easy tests, fun project
Easy class if you pay attention & study
great class
Very Cool & Hip Teacher
Professional, personable and inspiring. Great class.
You'll love it, don't be absent often, if so, you must befriend good notetaker.
Great class. Wish I could take her again! Clear, interesting lecture style. Fair grading.
She only wants to see art majors pass. Do not take class if your looking for an easy A.

The class is was very interesting, but if you don't take notes...Good Luck!
You can tell she loves art, and it rubs off.
Dr. De Koning is a superb instructor who truly knows a great deal about art and explains it well. She makes art fun and interesting, and allows free thinking up to the student. She is a MUST for beginning and experienced art students! Take her!
Excellent instructor! She really knows what she's talking about and makes class fun and interesting.
Best teacher I've ever had!! Makes one want to learn :) She is demanding but, provides one with everything one needs to know. Is always willing to help ouside of class. Show up to class and always take notes. She's really nice, and knows her history!! :)
I love all the slides she shows! A great look at historical art pieces w/ a great narrator. More like a fun museum trip than a class. Pay attention and take really, really good notes. The oral/visual tests are fast paced but not too hard.
MEMORIZE EVERYTHING...ALL TESTS ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT (3 TESTS + FINAL). 8 PAGE PROJECT DUE AFTER A 5 HOUR MUSEUM VISIT. THIS IS PROOF THAT SOME GENERAL ED TEACHERS WANT YOU TO BE A MAJOR IN THE FIELD THEY ARE TEACHING...WHOOPI
Marion De Koning is a wonderful teacher. Once you know how she likes the tests done, you'll do fine. Very nice lady. A+. I wish she would also teach art 141.
Great teacher, always happy. For the most part intreasting. Tests are strait forward. If u need this class take her.
Very easy instructor. If she were younger she'd be pretty hot. Some outside work takes time and effort, but I fell asleep half the time and got an easy A.
One of the BEST teachers I have ever had! She is fun, informative and really knows her subject. She loves what she teaches and makes you love it too. Tests are a little hard but you will always leave her class learning something new.
Loved her class, learned alot and kept it interesting. I hightly recomend her to anyone who is interested in Art.
I've taken another instructor for this class and droped because I fell asleep in every lecture. I took her class this semester and loved it. Her lectures are very interesting. Need an art credit? Take her.
It was easier than I thought, as long as i stayed and listened to the interesting lecturers. She also has a good sense of humor.
I thought this class was great. I wasn't looking forward to taking an art class, but I am really glad that I did. Her lectures are usually interesting. Yes there are some tests and a project; but nothing that you would't expect in a college class.
Do not take this class if you don't wanna major in this. Class is hard as hell. INCLUDE A 7 PAGE RESEARCH PAPER (come on! this is not English 120). if mess up one of the test, then you are DONE! way too much projects and presentations and report writing..
Great class! Great teacher! She really knows what she is taking about. Creative Project is easy ( DONT DO THE ESSAY ) Tests are fun as long as you read a little and like art.
This teacher is excellent. She knows so much and she will make you love art history. I strongly recommend her class.
Horrible! Miss one day of class and she hates you and it shows when she grades you! She expects everyone to be an art major.
Excellent teacher. Her classes are not too hard as long as you show up for all the lectures, write down what she tells you to(she tells you exactly what will be on the test), and make the flashcards. She's definitely the best professor in the department.
very helpful and smart
Not a hard class if you stay awake really hard to because the lights are off the whole time and her voice isn't that exciting but she was really nice and the test pretty much essay questions and then some on actual art work to memorize, then a art project
she is such a good teacher! I like her lecture a lot. But, the test is hard!! you should take a note each time. I recomend you should go to her office before the test, and show your eassy to her. She'll give you some advice.
hard class, i learned alot though. Her "weeding out" process is extremly obvious. most of the tests were after the drop date and i started getting A's, where i was getting D's with same grasp of material before )
don't talk her class, she is a horrible teacher i have ever had.
very nice, very helpful, very informative. Make sure you go to every class you can because you will be way behind if you dont. She doesnt really use the book too much you could probably get by without it, as long as you go to class. She suggests to use flash cards, and i would highly suggest it.

DOn't take this class if you arn't an art major. Its boring and she plays favorites. De Koning is by far the worst teacher I have had at grossmont. What kind of teacher tries to weed out her own students?! F this teacher
She is a great teacher, she really knows what she is talking about. make sure you are truley interested in art history before taking it or you'll be bored.
Great talent for Lecture. Difficult class, but very influencial and momentous. She is probabally too smart for most of us, but I liked that. Talk to her about philosophy, her thoughts will light fire to your brain. If you are a true Artist you will identify with her as I have.
I hate this class. It is so boring and everyone has trouble staying awake.
amazing and inspirational, but very difficult. only take her if you're looking for a fun and challenging course. preferably good for art history majors. she is so well-educated and very helpful!!
horrible teacher!!! I was so interested in art before I took this class. She is very difficult to understand. The tests are in written essay form and they are extremely long. It really takes up the whole time alotted for the test in order to complete it. I do not reccommend this professor.
she takes art seriuosly, and the tests are long and a hard if you dont take and study your notes.if you want to be bored out of your gore, take this class.
She is a wonderful teacher who really enjoys her job and has a passion for art. Very helpful and her lectures are interesting.
I really liked this class and ended up learning a lot about art, as well as some history and philosophy. The prof is nice and cares about students' success. The tests were some of the tougher I've taken at Grossmont, but they're do-able if you attend class and study. If you miss class, get the notes--much of the tests are based on lectures.
De Koning is a great teacher. Her classes are interesting because she goes "beyond" the book and you really learn a lot of stuff about different religions and cultures. Make sure you ALWAYS attend class because the tests are based largely on lecture. If you want to take an easy art class, do not take this one. Her tests are hard & detail oriented.
This class bored the hell out of me. i am an art major but i wanted to fall asleep every class. she lectures the whole class. tests are easy but she is very unclear about them. other than boring, the class wasnt that hard.
Eh, I agree with everyone else. If you're an art major, take her class. She's very serious about art and she turns it into a hardcore subject instead of an enlightening one. She can be unclear about certain things like due dates and whatnot, so pay attention from day 1 and hang on to your syllabus like it's your lifeline.
Great instructor! Friendly, insightful, and fun. As long as you pay attention to her handouts and make flash cards, it is difficult not to receive an A in her class. Cares about art, passionate about teaching. Always do the creative project! I think she even prefers it to the tedious research paper she offers. A must for art students.
pretty easy, lets you do re-writes and is understanding. She is sometimes funny and always nice. Come for lectures, take good notes and you'll be good for the tests there arent even that many.
Bad. She doesn't make an interesting topic exciting to learn. The tests are very easy, but her prep. isn't clear or very helpful.
This teacher was terrible. She was very unclear about what she wanted on the homework and unsure of herself. Having previous knowledge about art, proved to be a plus, but the class was still lacking in teaching the basics of Art History. I would not take this professor, or recommend anyone else to take her either.
Overall you'll learn A LOT about art. she LOVES art. The tests are very easy except for the essay part, she never tells you what exactly she wants so you'll never know. DONT miss class, she does in class essays on random days.
I took this class thinking it would be an easy A...it WASN'T!! Although i did end up getting an A, it took a lot of work. There's lots of homework, random in class essays, and a final assignment that includes a trip to a museum, along with a research paper or an original work of art (you get to choose). Take DETAILED notes, and attend ALL classe!!!
She's a good professor and very clear on what she expects of you. Be respectful, though.
She is extremely knowledgeable and if you have any interest in learning, you can get an A easily. For those who want to sleep through class and still manage an A without studying, this class is not for you, no matter who the teacher is.
I really enjoyed this class and she was a great teacher. yes you have to work for what you get in the class, but if you're interested in art history then its no big deal. She is always willing to help students, they just have to ask.
GREAT TEACHER… I have taken Art 140, 141, and 143 with her. She knows what she’s talking about and will teach you anything and everything she can. DO NOT MISS CLASS!!! Her tests are based solely on her lectures and you can’t pass if you don’t attend. I’ve never actually bought the textbook though… I look the pictures up online and study my notes. Y
her test are retty hard unless youre good at memorising things and her final project is really involved, but she is very helpful, passionate about her subject and interesting. Take her if you get the chance!!
Her tests are extremely hard and terms MUST be used to get a good grade. Very art major oriented and using words not associated with art on tests result in bad grades. Its all tests and a final.A little stuck up and high and mighty
I find her lectures really interesting. But she is extremely unreasonable when it comes to the tests. If you don'r spit back what she gave you word for word, she'll fail you. (Ex: She gave me a 30% on the first test and I attended all classes and already have a minor in art history.) I would never sign up with another class with her.
Dr. de Koning is one of the best Art History professors I have ever taken. Her enthusiasm is pretty awesome and really makes you interested in the subject. Take serious notes and memorize your dates and you will do well on her tests. Make sure to do the creative project too!
Very knowledgeable, but the test are unreasonable. If your an art major, maybe you'll pass, but if you want to take a class to emjoy art this class is not for you. SOOOO much to remember, who, what where, when, why, how (color, type of painting, style) for who, why was it importent, how did it influence later art, each test cover 40ish works of art
She's alright, but the class is waaaaay to long. seriously, and i took it at night, so it was majorly boring. if you are really into old buildings, and loooong lecutures, this class may be for you
LOVED the class... if you are interested in learning about the world in terms of art you should take the class. you have to pay attention, take good notes, and respond to her in class, she likes that. tests are hard though, but if you pay attention you will get an A, and the final is fun =]
This class is incredibly hard! She is a great teacher, very very informative, very enthusiastic, which is great- but I've read all the other reviews and I'm going to support the fact that she picks favorites and also weeds out her students. The tests are incredibly hard, I have managed to fail each- and I studied my tail off.
Professor DeKoning knows her art history and to do well you need to echo back what you hear in class so take good notes. There's a class project, either a paper or a creative project. Either way expect to spend some time on it.
she's a nice woman but you really do need to study the flash cards she makes you do in the beginning of the semester and the essay questions in exams you MUST study they have the most points!
She was knowledgeable; and you can tell she loves the subject. I probably would take her again. This class can be challenging. Exams are based on notes and pictures/artwork. Take great, thorough notes. Use vocabulary on tests. Study. You'll do fine. I earned a B.
I took three classes from her, Art 140, 141, and 142. This was ten years ago (I cannot believe it's been so long). But in all my studies, Prof. de Koning is still one of my favorites. She is passionate about what she teaches, and loves her students. She cares. I thoroughly enjoyed all three semesters with her. She taught me so much about art.
Not the easiest. She loves detail way to much she marks down if you don't describe everything down to the smallest thing for her on tests. O some tests she didn't even write comments to say what I did weing but she still managed to subtract points.
Oh, quite excellent! Yes yes, perhaps a wee bit meticulous, but is that not why we are in school? To study the world in detail?
A lot of reading, but easy as long as you make your flash cards. If you don't study you won't pass, but the flashcards make it easy. She gives you the option to do a hands-on project,or a research paper.GET YOUR WORK DONE ON TIME! She does not accept excuses for late work, but you shouldn't need them because we have loads of time to get the work done.
Thoroughly enjoyed her 140 and 141 classes a few years ago. Read the book for background info, but you must take good notes to do well on the tests. You must do a project, either research a work of art or create your own, this is your chance to shine. Professor de Koning knows her s@#$, so come to class and let her enthusiasm open your eyes.
you have to pay good attention at all times!! and take good notes she is really picky on her tests and a hard grader..
i had her and at first she wasnt my favorite very strict about cellphones and being late. but otherwise she has a structured class very detailed in lectures which allow you to take better notes that you need on the exams only thing is you better have a good memory to pass those exams she is very into class interactions nice woman tho just strict
Fun Class! If you didnt like studying artwork before you will now! She is very clear about the art pieces and really shows a passion for whta she teaches. I never really used the book but taking notes is a MUST! Flashcards are an extreme help also. =] Good luck!
Dr de Koning is a great teacher. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about her work. Not a super difficult class, but expect lots of studying. Make flashcards. There is a project that is either creative or a paper, but it was fun. I truly enjoyed both classes I took with her. Best art history professor. Take her class!
Dr.de Koning is so helpful. She is nice and very good at what she does. She gives you all the information you need for the tests all you have to do is study it. Class requires a lot of studying so be prepared to work super hard. If you're planning your schedule make sure all your other classes are easy like P.E. or Film Analysis.
Absolutely an amazing teacher. Not a lot of home work assigned, but a lot of studying is mandatory if you want a decent grade in the class.
Class is an easy A. You dont even need to pay full attention. Just show up. She practically gives you all the answers to her exams. And choose a creative project vs paper. Much easier at getting an A
Helpful professor, class isn't hard if you pay attention and study. Easy A if you work hard enough. Make sure to take lots of notes, your in-class notes will end up being more helpful than the textbook.
Very informative and well versed in artists, artwork, and relative importance to the class and art history in general.
Definetily not an easy A course, you have to take really good note in this class in order to study for your test.A good memorization of the artworks and terminologies is required.Don't even try to take this class unless you major in art, because it's pretty hard for people who have no interests in art.She is better than Serrano, but is still strict.
She is an awesome teacher! Very clear and to the point. If you show up to class, take notes, and do the homework (just like any other class) you will be fine. She doesn't like disruptions and teaches by her syllabus religiously. You will never be surprised by an assignment as she gives out the entire work load at the beginning of the semester!
She is a good professor. Has her doctorate and basically expects respect because of it. Is helpful and clear, just not the easiest class. Super hardcore about assignments if you miss one. GL passing if you miss it. MUST study throughout the course to pass with even a C. I got an A so it's possible, just apply yourself.
Don't miss class! Take notes on EVERYTHING she says. Only like 5 graded assignmentstestsfinal throughout the semester. Pretty tough if you don't at least attempt to study.
First off, dont take an Art history class unless you're an art major. If you're doing it for a credit req, skip this one. She is a great teacher, but goodness is she a hard grader. She expects you to regurgitate EXACTLY word for word what she has taught. Ex: "It's a history painting, not historical painting, if you wrote that, zero credit."
This is NOT an easy A class. People who aren't interested in art or art history better stay away and take some easier classes for your GE. You're expected to take really good notes in class, and none of the questions on the exams will surprise you because they're exactely related to her lectures. There's no reason to fail if you attend every class.
Fun class. Talks a lot. Take GREAT notes. Hard to get a perfect score on tests. Tough grader.
Marion De Koning is a wonderful Art History professor. She is passionate about the subject and gives fantastic lectures. There is a lot to remember, but she makes her expectations very clear. It's not hard to get an A if you put a good amount of effort into the class, but don't plan on skating by.
The best art history teacher I've had! Very clear in her expectations of her students. Work hard, score high! She also offers a great opportunity to either write a research paper or go to a museum and then create something based on the piece you saw. Text isn't really used. Whatever is lectured on will show up on the exam. TAKE HER! You'll love it!
Don't take her class unless you are an art major andor have taken her class before. If you skip more than two classes she will dropfail you. She expects you to have taken her class before so her test guidelines are not clear unless you have.
It's an intro to art class, you'd think it'd be easy but it's not. Semester project requires a lot of time, a lot. 4 grades given in the entire class. Better be prepared.
Dr. de Koning is very straightforward with her lectures. I cannot stress how much attendance matters. The questions she has on her exams are come right from her lectures, so make sure you organize your notes. If you would like to survive her class, it is necessary that you: MAKE FLASHCARDS! FORM A STUDY GROUP! ASK QUESTIONS! And, Good-luck!
This is the easiest class i have taken. you can easily get an A on every exam, All you have to do is show up to class. She basically gives you the answers to the tests in her lectures so definitely take notes. She is not the friendliest person but as long as you do your work you will be on her good side. textbook used for hw and classwork
The work is NOT hard. She gives you literally everything you need to pass the 4 tests. I mean she LITERALLY has you write down everything she wants you to write on the test. The semester length project does take a lot of time but really, this class is an A if you are a good student and will put in a little effort. You will seriously learn a ton.
Took this class thinking it was gonna be easy but it was the complete opposite. Homework everyday and lectures are long. Make sure you're very specific when it comes to tests, spelling and grammar is important! One big project that includes going to the museum and either doing a hands on project or a report on it.
If you are NOT an art major DO NOT take her class. She expects you to know some stuff already just because you are in that field. She also expects everything to be perfect.
She will mark you off for just about any mistake you make, but she allows for corrections on the homework. You have to do the homework, but it isn't difficult. 3 tests. Do the creative project, not the research paper. I did the research paper and it took hours upon hours. My friend's creative project took him 30 minutes. We received the same grade.
okay so basically what you do in this class is you do a lot of home works and for each hw she grade it out of 3, 5, or 6. She is really strict. she will mark you down for every mistake you make. For example if you miss spell a word she will mark you down. She also expect you to know everything. she want you to write all the details in the HW.
Professor shows a real passion for the Arts. With this in mind she will make you work in class, as in there will be a good amount of reading, writing, and definitely studying. Not an easy A, but if you show up to class and take good notes you should be fine. Material itself is not too difficult, you just need to put in the time!
Lots of effort but you'll end up failing!
I've always been passionate for art & history but the way this professor grades DO NOT represent your knowledge of the material. She has no mercy for mistakes. No late work & no extra credit. You won't pass the test if you miss the lectures. You have to be highly skill taking notes, a lot of the questions in the tests won't be in the book.
I don't need a lot words, only a few. Enjoyed this class, loved the lectures, very supportive. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't hesitate to do so.
There are 4 tests and a project (do the creative project!) The textbook helps reinforce what she is lecturing on, but passing the tests will likely more rely on what she said in class. LOTS of memorization
Wonderful caring professor. It is art history, so prepare to study and memorize. Make your cards ASAP! I learned a lot and had fun doing it. You will get a lot out of this class if you are willing to put in the work. Don't just come to class unprepared and expect an easy A.
Honestly an amazing professor, i never write reviews but i had to do one for this specific prof. Shes really nice and super caring, she wants you to get the best grades and also goes easy on you. Lectures are very fun and overall would 100% recommend this class and most importantly the professor.
LOVED Professor De Koning's class. Took an 8-week course so lectures were long and attendance was mandatory. Super organized about her lesson plans so turn in quizzes and read the textbook on time. Recommend only for good notetakers and people willing to study. Really awesome and interesting class if you put in the work!
I really enjoyed having this professor she definitely knew her stuff and gave great lectures and provided helpful learning resources and handouts that made the class easier to follow along
I loved her; she knew so much about every artist she showed us, and then some. I really enjoyed her class, especially the assignment we had to do, going to the museum and replicating an art piece we saw with our own twist to it. Mine wasn't very good, but she immediately recognized the inspiration and which museum it was from. She's the best!
