You better plan to study!!! The class is straight forward, but you have to do all the chapter problems and really study. He gives bonus points on each test/quiz. The final exam is a major part of your grade.
In no way an easy class, Professor Hammond was a demanding teacher. There is always a few extra credit points on your quizes and tests so he leaves you a little room for error. You will leave this class having learned more about chemistry than you thought possible...and you might even enjoy it.
The material I understood, the teacher I did not. This professor teaches as if you already know and understand chemistry! I highly recommend you get a different professor if you get stuck having to take this class!
Very hard. The very best teacher I have ever had. I have never worked harder and worried more.
Chemistry is no easy subject. Prof. Hammond's class is pretty straight forward. His tests and quizzes consist mostly on calculation problems rather then literature. He tells you exactly when his quizzes/tests are and what to study exactly. Go to class and do the chapter reviews. the more you practice problems the easier it will be.
Very talent professor, explain clearly, his class is for the student who are smart as him. If you believe yourself as a science person, go to this challenge.
very kind
Absolutely an excellent instructor, loves chemistry and teaching, has a broad expanse of knowledge in physics and math which really helps him get his points accross to his students, but he will make you work harder than you ever dreamed. :-)
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER IF YOU LOVE YOUR GPA. Very hard teach. He is an excelent teacher, but his exames are crazy. You feel forced to study hard. If you had other classes to take he made live really difficult. Also he loves to give bad grades to students. I guess we have only 5 people left in my Chem 121 class and we just had the second exame.
Very brilliant man, knows a lot and has a lot of office hours if you need help, WARNING DO NOT TAKE WITH OUT PREP. OR PREVIOUS CHEM!! I made that mistake and am struggling to pull a B, only tests the hard questions, no easy questions on tests but allows you to redeem yourself come final time. :) You will come out very knowledgeable...
Success Tips in his classes: 1. Do every practice problem in the book/online. 2. ALWAYS put your lab partner's name on the report. 3. Significant figures changes A to B. 4. Ask every question you can in and out of class. 5. Do all the previous year tests and quizzes. 6. Answer every question he ask in class. Harvard has not match for his s
I got an A+ in his class just for getting 65 out of the possible 70 in the final. In the exams and quizzes I got some B's, lots of C's and few D's. But because I studied a lot in the final I earned bonus points and end up with an A+. He gives lots of bonus points like 200 bonus points per semester
When I took this teacher I felt like it was a nightmare. He is super hard, but when I got to Chem 241 I promise that this teacher is one of the best. He is hard , but you learn. I used many of his class lecture to study for the beging of Organig Chemistry. He teachs a lot more than Collins and you will feel more confident.
I took Prof. Hammond for O-Chem 2 over summer. He is great at lecturer will answer any question. Wants interactive learning. Go to office as much as possible ask any questions (LOTS). Do all questions at end of chapter especially *. Has old exams at library do all of them. Take him for LAB. He is the best Chem teacher period. He knows his stuff.
This teacher is good, but really tough. i was able to go up to him and ask questions about anything, and he would help. this course is tough and so is his grading, but if u go to him for help, and get copies of his past tests you'll be able to pass the class
If you need this class in order to enter a limited entry program (and you need an A or a B) do NOT enroll with this teacher. He teaching method involves bulldozing students, reminding them of their ignorance, and he grades extremely HARD. Your efforts will be demeaned, you will "spin your wheels" unnecessarily. Enroll with COLLINS. Seriously.
Super hard but very worth it. He is the greatest. MUCH better than Collins. Entertaining and makes your interest in chem completely skyrocket. I wish I had him for every chem class & lab. The tests & quizzes are hard but he lets you know how to prepare. Use old quizzes and exams in the reserve library & do the problems & you will not only do good, but understand, too.
marion hammond is the most hard teacher i have ever had his test are brutal and he expects so much however this teacher knows his stuff. If your woried about your GPA stay away, If you want to really understand organic chemistry then take him
Hammond expects a lot from you but you will really know your stuff. He also very available if you need help. Take him if you have upcoming entrance exams.
Prof. Hammond is tough, and you'll definitely earn your grade, but he's fair and he knows his stuff. If you need an easy grade, don't take him. If you need this knowledge later, he's your guy.
This class is demanding and requires that you keep ontop of everything! It is hard and he "tricks" you- but i guess if you really REALLY know it- you should be able to get it!On the plus side- he is always available to help you. If you put the time into it- you will do alright! However- he does require alot more than other professors do.
I took Hammond for chem 121, 122, and 242 and got A's on all three. He is a very good professor. He is willing to help if you want to learn. The trick is to study all his reserved material, and ask him for help when you need it.
Hammond is tough.. This class requires ALOT of studying. He moves very quickly through the material so going to the tutorial helps. Lots of Quizes..no mandatory homework. He's a pretty tough greader,He also puts copies of old exams in the library.. those are very useful. Dont get behind or you'll be lost for the rest of the semester.
Cool guy. The work itself is a little challenging. you have to be good at algebra & converting units. go to the lecture because he explains things clearly. you have to keep up though because he goes pretty fast. he's very approachable & has copies of previous quizzes at the library. overall, he was a pretty good teacher.
This guys is TOUGH. No joke. You will have to work real hard to get even a B. He is however very helpful, knows his stuff and is always there to help you. You will learn alot in this class. But its very very hard. He grades very tough for CSN. This is not an easy A or easy B class. You will have to earn and work for your grade. But you will learn .
His class is hard which would not be a problem, but what adds insult to injury is not that he pushes students is that there is no call backs, no return emails, and office hours are a joke! He has all the answers and just hope you know what they are on the exams. Only a few questions with long answers. If you get one wrong, you can't pass exam.
Great teacher exams straight from notes and practice tests and quizes in library. Get the reserve tests and quizes in the library and do them before test day and you will ace each exam. Not as difficult as everyone says on here as long as you show up to class and do the practice exams. Great Chemistry teacher interesting class.
i had him for lecture and lab. He is a tough grader in lab and on quizes and exams. Good teacher, just really hard.
Hammond is not an easy teacher. He grades hard and expects his students to know alot of information. He defintely knows his stuff and will help you outside of class and during office hours. But prepared to work very hard just to pass. He shows no mercy in grading.
I suggest if you get him for lab you have him for lecture also. Trust me it will make things a lot easier. He is really hard, but i still got an A, it was a miracle. I studied hard for it. He is nice and funny, but very tough. Study his old exams and quizes because they are almost the same as the ones he will give you. I never used my book though.
Great teacher! Definitely take him, whether you're good at chem or not. The class itself is difficult because it's a hard subject (be good at math!), but he explains hard concepts really well and is always available for help. 4 tests, 12 quizzes (drops lowest 2) and has practice tests&quizzes that are exactly like real ones-DO THEM! Don't need book
Great professor that tries to make lab fun. Don't expect to get any of your papers back until the end of the semester though. Don't let having no idea about your grade dissuade you from taking him, he's a really solid teacher.
He is very tough! But he gives extra credit on his tests and quizzes which helps a lot!! He also has his old test/quizzes in the library so you can use those to study for exams. It's very similiar so definitely take advantage of it! He also doesn't really show how to do the problems you need to know. Kinda have to figure it out yourself w/ little help. I think he forgets we aren't as good in chemistry as him. Again he's very hard but def. can still pass his class even if you aren't good in chem.
I love Hammond! Great professor! You must be good at algebra to do well in Chem 110. If you are not, don't take the class or get a tutor! Seriously! If you are good at algebra its a breeze. He gives you everything you need to be successful old exams, extra credit, etc. Plus he's funny. I would be sure to read the book and do the practice problems.
Hammond is amazing! He is very helpful although this class is really difficult especially for those who don't have a strong chemistry background. During lecture it's hard to focus because he jumps around a lot in conversation and on the board, but if you go it still helps just watching him go through problems and listening. TAKE HIM!
Mr. Hammond is a tough teacher, however with all the extra credits he gives in lab n lecture made it POSSIBLE to get an A. Attendance isnt mandatory but you don't wanna miss the class b/c u'll have hard time on quizzes n exams. Make sure to get the practice quizzes n exams in library. They do major help!
Possible to get an A if you are good at algebra, can commit plenty of time on this class, and read & understand concepts in the textbook before going to the lecture. He doesn't necessarily explain things in detail so you need to teach yourself or use the tutoring service. The previous quizzes & exams in the library reserve definitely helps a LOT.
Tough teacher but very very knowledgable. He knows chemistry. He's always willing to help and really tries to help students understand. He grades strict but just take notes while he is explaining the concepts. He has a good sense of humor and his classes are fun.
Very poor teacher. Unclear to what he requires, especially from transfer students. Very condescending. Teachers like this make me stop loving chemistry.
He likes to talk a lot about unrelated topics, share personal stories, and compare just about everything to science fiction. If he spent more time explaining things and allowing time for you to absorb material before throwing a whole bunch of other stuff at you, he'd be a great teacher.
He is very goofy :), strict about dress code, very picky about lab reports, tardiness and lab notebook, he's funny and kept the class entertain.
Very good teacher. Best chemistry teacher since High School.
Im in his class this fall for lecture and lab. He is a good teacher and knows the subject well. Attendance ins't mandatory but try not to miss class. The book is only for study problems, which I ended up not buying. I study using a website he provided in the syllabus. 4 exams, 12 of 13 lab reports, 10 of 12 quizzes and a final
Its the class and the concepts that are hard learning so many new things all dependent on the other... Hammond is quirky but funny and very helpful... love his grading style!!
This is the greatest teacher I've ever met! He answers your questions patiencly, explain things clearly. I've struggling in his class but I didn't drop it even though it was tough. He is ready to answer your questions even you are not in the chem class he is teaching. Highly recommended to take his class. Chem is not easy, need to spend time in it.
very hard
Decent teacher but wasn't always clear and moved too fast through the some of the course matter and I was often lost. He also is VERY adament about not allowing a W unless you officially withdraw through the system. And despite what he might tell you that you can have it changed to a W after the class is finished, that is not the case.
Professor Hammond is probably one of my favorite professors I've taken at CSN. He's likely tougher than other professors, but more than fair with grading and provides ample opportunity to do well. I've seen him spend a lot of time with other students, and can tell that he really wants his students to do well.
Professor Hammond took over our class halfway through the semester due to something happening with our former teacher, so things were harder due to that experience. Professor Hammond moved very fast, but was also clear with expectations. Gave practice tests (so helpful) and curved/gave extra points as needed. I would take him for O Chem again!
Prof. Hammond really knows chemistry! He teaches the material well, and shows his students how to work formulas and problems. He sometimes goes too fast with his notes, so some topics were hard to grasp in class. He provides plenty of outside material that will help: old quizzes/exams from library, chem websites, and he's usually in his office.
He is incredibly helpful and obviously knows what he is talking about, the class isn't easy, but if you work on previous quizzes/exams and asks questions, you can ace the class, he's probably the best chemistry professor there.
Great teacher! It's a really hard class and Hammond is really helpful! He knows chemistry like the back of his hand. Fair teacher, he helps anyone who'll ask. Best Chem teacher at CSN. Take hammond for every chem class and you'll be a chemistry whiz in no time
If this is your last chemistry class, I don't recommend taking it with him. But if you are moving on to 181, this is a must-take professor! This class will kick your butt, and at times it may not seem worth it, but when you get to 181 (the "hardest chem class") it will be a piece of cake thanks to Prof. Hammond's class! DO THE ONLINE PRACTICES!
SO HARD!!! I am an A student and I have never studied so hard with little to no results. Good professor, WORST CLASS IN THE WORLD! DO NOT TAKE UNLESS NEED CHEM TO GRADUATE!
If you don't need chem for your profession then don't take this class! Super hard test & quiz. Study a lot & got very little results. His test & quiz are harder then what is explained in class. He does have test/quiz you can copy at the library. He does not use the textbook or online chem lab either. Tough, tough class!
Professor Hammond is an awesome professor. He is very helpful and encourages students to master Chemistry. Gives practice exams and quizzes that are helpful. I highly recommend either Professor Hammond or Professor Ormord for O-Chem. Both are very helpful and challenging. Unlike Professor Ormord, Mr. Hammond is difficult to beat in game of chess.
I really enjoyed taking Hammond's class. He loves Ochem and knows what he is doing, he also breaks it down for students to understand so much better. Ochem is hard but pay attention to the little things he mentions in lecture and do the end of chapter hw problems they help alot. He is always there to help so make sure you ask.
Best professor I have ever had; I changed my major after taking his classes. It's a hard class, but if you study hard and do every problem in the textbook, you can get a good grade.
Expects answers to be very specific. I went to his office hours and had to ask how he wanted each question answered after the 5th lab. I ended up with an A, thank god for the 20 point bonus in lab. Hes a very tough grader but it is possible to get an A. You just have to work for it. Also I want to mention, he doesnt stick to his office hours.
A stickler. Very particular and clear on what he wants -very clear. Not the easiest and not for slackers, but will drown you in extra points: the tests are worth up 14 out of 9 points. The final is worth 80 (out of 1000 course total) bonus points. Without exception, everything you do can potentially bring you over 100% of the grade.
If you did fine in Ochem 1, then Ochem 2 should be no different. Ochem 2 is filled with synthesis and mechanisms. Mr. Hammond is very helpful and will help you score high in the final ACS exam. I highly recommend taking Hammond if you want to master organic chemistry.
He's a good chemistry professor. He offers tons of extra points, and If I had fewer credits I would've gotten a higher A. The final could potentially replace lower scores on the midterms. Use the quizzes and tests from the resource library, because they contain problems that you will see on his tests.
Hands down a great professor. REALLY knows his stuff, especially organic chemistry. Although a great professor, definitely not the easiest. Lots of out of class studying done. Study the questions at the end of each chapter, especially the challenge questions which will sometimes pop up on quizzes/exams.
If you like studying and then failing everything, you should take him.
Horrible! The only good thing I can say is that previous test and quizzes are available to study from at the library. Other than that the class is HARD. Your grade depends on only your test and quiz scores.
He is very strict. Make sure you read his syllabus for his rules while taking exams or quizzes, & do not forget it. Other than that he is an excellent professor. I wish I can take his class for all the chemistry classes I needed to take. His old quizzes & exams in the library helps a lot. Need to practice and do homework to get an A.
This class is not easy and the lectures are somewhat rushed; but, I definitely learned a lot from this class & teacher. As long as you study past quizzes and exams as well as practice in class problem examples -- you'll be just fine. Grading is fair and extra credit points are generously given. Would definitely recommend this professor.
Professor Hammond is concise, meticulous and funny. He knows his stuff well and is able to connect tough concepts to every day life. He will make you curious about the world around you. He has rules and you will need to follow them, especially in lab. Had to work very hard to earn the grade I received. Definitely not an easy A class. Study hard!
He was never prepared for class and wasted so much time that he was always behind other classes and would rush through material with no explanation but then quiz us the very next class, with no opportunity to ask questions. He will also not prepare you for the final, which is a national test. He's also not very intelligent or informed.
Does not use textbook, but has virtually no other study materials. Quizzes and tests in library were missing. Long personal anecdotes cut into class time. Thinks google is listening to his conversations when he leaves a laptop open. Does not allow you to record lectures or photograph problems on board to look at later. Don't waste your time.
He makes chemistry harder than it has to be. His grading policy is completely unreasonable. He enjoys deducting points for any reason. It doesn't matter how hard you try, you will never get a 100% on a quiz, test, or lab assignment.
Hammond is by far the best professor I've had in college. He is in the tutoring center every day to go over any practice quiz and test problem. He will sit and explain any question you have until you understand it. If you're a student that doesn't like to put in the work-don't take him, but you will regret it if you have to take any other chem.
Hammond's lab is the best. He explains them before the start of the lab so you know exactly what you need to do and how to do it, unlike a lot of other lab profs. He gives lots of hints and tips that help tremendously. If you take his lecture with his lab you will be a master in chemistry. Recommend taking if you love chemistry and have an interest
Gives great every day real world stories that make you actually interested in what he's teaching. Grades on a curve and always has time to answer questions. Having the text book helps so you have extra questions to study but it's not mandatory and he has copies of his previous quizzes and tests in the library that are great study tools.
Professor Hammond is a great professor because he knows what he is teaching and makes you learn all the material. He is also a tough professor that gives you the grade you actually earned. I would recommend the future students to use the old quizzes and test as a study guide and don't miss a class because it's so much information each time.
He is an extremely tough professor but a good one as well. No assignments are given. The grade you receive is solely from quizzes and exams. He does give extra points on quizzes and exams. He also drops your lowest quiz. You definitely have to work hard to get a good grade but that is what college is about. You have to put a lot of effort and time.
Prof Hammond is always there if you need help. He gives practice quiztest that are practically identical to ones in class. He teaches it so you understand it, not memorize it. Got over 100% on multiple quizzes bc of extra credit. If you try and you make an effort you will get an A and come out of his class understanding chemistry.
He knows his stuff, but terrible teacher! DO NOT TAKE HIM! he doesn't do enough examples in class and expect us to know things he never talked in class! I just got a B because of his extra credits. And don't waste your time trying to ask him for help.
Easily the best chemistry teacher at CSN, he makes everything seem so simple when he explains it and gives real world examples of concepts, mostly to do with cooking and camping tips. He has previous tests available for you to study at the library along with their answers. Also, if you get him for lab he will actually do the whole lab as an example
Best professor I've ever had.
I took professor Hammond for organic chemistry 242 in summer of 2015. It was hard work, I cried, a lot, but that's the class in general. He was always there to help and encourage. You have to work a lot, and you get what you put into it. Even though I got a C, I still learned a lot with him Working out problems from the back of the book will help!
how do you rate a scientist who isn't? one who says co2 doesn't cause global warming against 100 years of solid science, who says asbestos isn't harmful, and that life is "magical" and violates the 2nd law of thermodynamics. he's a joke.
Tests on file incomplete/outdated. To get copies required a visit to his office and did not correspond with how our tests were broken up, some things in tests were not discussed in class or in the book, always a surprise, never enough time. Did not give practice questions, outside research required. Straight A student expects C.
Is good at explaining the lab assignment before but marks off for everything even by wrong sig figs or if you happen to forget your partners name. Final questions must be completely answered -no short ones. Expects you to learn alone on all calculations. would say to take some one else!!
Chemistry is hard so all chem teachers get neg reviews. Chem is basically half math. Complete at least algebra first, better pre calculus. You will do well. Interesting funny lecture. Fair grader. Made chem my favorite subject. Math is cumulative so do not get behind or think you can slack on that part. It will bite you.
He's a nice professor, but harder then it should have been. I had Chemistry in high school and I did well but was lost in this class. Go to tutoring, get his old exams from the library, and watch YouTube videos. Studying with friends might be helpful too. It's like teaching yourself. He gives bonus points on test and exams. Don't get out your seat
Prof. Hammond is a good teacher. Be ready to put in work, his tests are designed to be difficult but he definitely gets you ready for the ACS exam. He goes through the material quite quickly and gives you quizzes on material he covers the same day. You definitely have to stay on top of your reading and studying. I would take him again.
Tough professor. But fair for the most part. Hard class. But practice quizes and exams are available to use for studying. He takes Chem to the next level of learning and he knows chemistry very well. He gives an extraordinary amount of extra points you can earn and that is very helpful. YOU MUST STUDY! Tutoring lab saved my semester!
Earn as many points as you can. If you have a question, ASK IT! He will help you if you are persistent! Good to have him in both lecture and lab. He will make you think!
You WILL understand the concepts you need to move forward! He is not a "multiple choice" "take a guess" kinda teacher! You will learn. It is best to have him for lecture and lab together. He makes it interesting and all of his previous test are available to study!!!! One of the best professors I have had!
Would never recommend him to anyone. Prof Hammond has terrible time management. He often goes off on a tangent in the middle of lectures about his past years in teaching chemistry. He is obviously knowledgeable, but his lecture style is erratic. He also doesn't bother with technology, hardcopy of test at library, no digital anything, maybe email.
Probably the hardest grader i have ever taken. He hacks a lot of points off your grade. You probably shouldn't take him if you are an engineer major, only take if you really need chemistry in your career. Even though i got an A most people who take him end up getting hurt from lab.
Hands down best Chemistry Teacher at CSN, and definitely surpasses most at UNLV. Most won't get a good grade if they don't put the work in. That being said, take the class with easier ones, you will, however, learn Chemistry properly.
Overall this teacher is tough but not too bad. He gives lots of extra points just in case you miss some questions. The quizzes are good practice for the exam. Study very diligently in his class and go to the science center and ask for Will. He will help you with anything you need. Also if you are able to grab recent quizzes it will help A LOT.
Overall, his class is super hard. He isn't very thorough with explaining concepts and expects you to learn it on your own time. He doesn't assign homework, which sucks because you have to find problems to practice yourself. I would not recommend this class if you aren't confident in chemistry
I would not recommend taking Professor Hammond for Chem 121. His time management and lecture skills are extremely poor. Had a lot of questions on the test, sometimes not enough time to complete them all. I learned more when he would go over the test than and quizzes than I would when he would lecture before them.
The subject can be tough but Mr. Hammond is probably the best chemistry teacher at CSN. He is good at "reading" the class to ensure that everyone is at least understanding the materials. Do all of the practice quizzes and exams and you will ace the test easily. If you're really confused go to office hours or the tutoring center where he is.
He is an amazing professor. This class is very hard, but his is very fair in grading. Do the problems in the book and definitely do his practice quizzes and tests. He is frequently available if you need help outside of class. GO TO CLASS! HE doesn't like the textbook very much, and if you go to class you will know what is important to study.
Prof Hammond will for sure prep you for ACS. A very professional instructor with a big heart !He only sets you up for success! Always there to answer questions, will not make you feel intimidated as O-Chem is already an intimidating subject. He's very encouraging, wants to see his students succeed. That's not very common of Chemistry instructors!
One of the best teachers I have had in general. Ochem is extremely difficult so it will be hard no matter what. He gives extra points on all quizzes and tests and gives you practice ones that are very similar. Go to office hrs. I definitely suggest doing problems out of both Klein and Solomon 8th edition. Spec problems are straight from book.
Make sure you have a good foundation of Ochem 1 (especially NMRs) before you take this class. His lectures can be disorganized at times but he is always accessible outside of class and genuinely cares for his student's success. Tests and quizzes are BRUTAL but he grades very fair. The only way to pass this class is to do ALL the homework problems.
Old school, lots of tests, but professor presents material and expectations clearly. Take his class if you really want to learn chemistry and hard work doesn't scare you.
A quiz practically everyday, and they are not easy. He often gives bonus points but even then you are lucky to get a C. He is very picky and not willing to explain what he writes on the board. If you do not listen for one second you will be lost for weeks.
Marion Hammond doesn't care for the success of his students. If you do not already understand chemistry, don't bother. If you are a girl, he will interrupt you to explain things you have already stated, without answering your question, and then praise a boy for your correct answers. His teaching is mediocre; expect many anecdotes about raspberries.
Professor Hammond has a great passion for chemistry. His lectures are amazing. My tip for taking Professor Hammond is to be one step ahead of him in lecture. Treat lectures as a review session after you've studied off the textbook he's recommended to study off of. OChem isn't easy. You must study if you want to earn the grade you want.
a nice guy, easy to approach. how ever, his lectures are confusing, he has no notes that he uses to organize the notes on the board that's why his notes are always all over the place. he does not follow the syllabus at all so if you miss a class be prepared for a pop up quiz. to take his class make sure you have money and time for private tutoring.
Hes very by the book. He is intimidating and not so easy to talk to. I always felt uncomfortable to ask him questions. Tough grader, and goes off topic quite often. Wouldnt take again.
As a student who struggled with Chemistry, Mr. Hammonds teaching was clear along with fair grading. The material is heavy on math, along with Chemistry basics. I recommend all students to join a study group, YouTube videos, practice problems, and dont miss class. This class is hard work, but with enough study time you can surely pass.
Very tough professor, don't take him if you have other subjects to juggle. He will consume your time and demand your 100% focus and study time. Exams every day, every week, all test are solving NO MULTIPLE CHOICE since day 1. Lectures are very fast and disorganized.
He is a very tough grader. He has weird ways of teaching and if you are not comfortable with them, it is best to teach yourself. He does not like to answer your questions or he will give you a blank stare.
If you're not a chem major I do not recommend this teacher, he goes the extra mile on everything making problems harder than they need to be. Does not give any homework and if you don't study his practice test or quiz most likely you will fail the class. That being said he is passionate about chem and knows what is talking about. Be ready to Study.
Professor Hammond is the real deal. If you put the time in and pass, you will come out of his class and have a breeze in 122. He definitely makes you work for your grade, but there is always opportunity for extra points (he doesnt like to call it extra credit). Study with his old exams that he makes accessible and go to his office or the tutor.
He knows his chem. But 121 is so easy for him, he thinks it should be easy for you too. Gets sidetracked about comicbooks then rushes through lec. Very disorganized on the board. Lectures, then quizzes you on material the same day. Very demeaning when you ask a question and interrupts you. Makes you feel dumb. Overall, poor. Wouldn't take again.
Professor Hammond is amazing. Compared to any of the organic professors at UNLV, Dr. Hammond is an excellent professor. He helps you pass his class and guides you to pass the ACS final. There are 4 quizzes, 4 tests, and 12 labs totaling 1000 points to be had. He is a fair grader and gives numerous opportunities for extra points. Take this class!
He is a genius professor but really strict and if you are not like him then you will surely fail as in get a F. His exams does not have multiple choices.
Ok so I very rarely write reviews on my professors, they all have been just eh! I have written one bad one for a really terrible one in the past at UNLV, and one great one for one of the best professors Ive ever had (also at UNLV). This is quite possibly my 3rd review ever! And its because Professor Hammond is amazing!!! Dont believe the bad!
The worst professor I've ever had. He is demeaning and pretty much calls you dumb when you ask questions. He isn't supportive of his students at all and, while he's an interesting person, he gets sidetracked and talks too much of his personal life sometimes, leaving no time for lecture. He expects you to know the material as soon as he teaches it.
very old school, no way to contact him outside of school. lectures are all over and doesnt do any examples unless asked. even then hell rush it. teaches and then expects you to know it same day for a quiz or next lecture. rushes through lectures because he gets side tracked
Professor Hammond was the worse prof I ever had. He will expect you to be genius like him. His so fast in doing lecture and his exam is super long no multiple choice and there are a lot of topics included in 1 exam. Quiz is hard as well. He is a genius so if you are just average student it will be hard for you to take his class.
Hammond has a very distinct teaching style and is very old school with his teaching ways. I do appreciate that even though he is not a fan of technology he attempted to still help students online. O chem is just a very hard topic overall regardless of the professor. But Hammond will ensure you know your material being his student.
You will most likely hear "Hammond" and "difficult" in the same sentence and you would be correct. But I will say, if you take this class and are genuinely ready to study and reread lecture notes, you will leave this class absolutely understanding organic chemistry. I'd recommend this professor for those that are serious about learning chemistry.
Listen, OChem isn't easy. Hammond is a tough as nails teacher, but he's good. Once you understand his style of teaching, and work your butt off for this course, you'll have a new respect for him and Chemistry. He is intentionally difficult because if you can get through his class then you truly understand Chemistry. Tough but totally worth it.
You need a good chemistry background to do well in this class. Those with weak understanding will be lost, but those with a strong understanding will thrive and grow to love chemistry even more. He's a good guy and the amount of extra credit was incredible. At one point in the class I had a 115%. Only downside is that he will never answer emails.
For his quizzes and tests, you either do it his way exactly (despite him recommending a textbook) or you get no points. Especially for definitions. For one test, I quoted the PERSON WHO CAME UP WITH THE DEFINITION, and was marked wrong because it wasn't the one he gave in class. The lectures are useless and directly contradict the textbook.
Grades and teaches solely based off of opinions. He is a very weird grader. You need to have a clear understanding of chem to pass. He does not give helpful feed back, laughs at you for asking questions or ignores them. Expects you to fully understand something immediately after telling you how to do it. I would highly recommend finding someone els
Dr Hammond has such a confusing way of teaching and his "notes" were all over the place. I often had to erase what I had in my notebook and re-write it because he would always backtrack. If chemistry is a weak subject for you, I would not recommend this professor. He is old school and does not answer emails.
Professor Hammond wasn't great. He isn't accessible at all. He has lectures 2x a week and you will want to show up because there is a quiz basically after every class. There are 4 exams and a final. Thankfully there are bonus points on every assessment which helps a lot with your grade. If you aren't good at Chemistry, take a different professor.
Attendance is extra credit, DOES NOT USE EMAIL (almost as if he is far reached from technology). Like every Chemistry teacher.
Took Professor Hammond for CHEM 122 Lab. His labs go by smoothly. His grading on the other hand is horrible. He doesn't grade till last week and gives no feedback. Would not recommend taking him if chemistry is not your strongest subject. Good luck.
CHEM 121L. Professor Hammond is old school. He doesn't really use canvas, instead, he checks your labs and notebook in class and signs you off. If you miss a lab there's an online one that you can do at home. He also doesn't grade till last week of the semester. Even though he's a tough grader, he can be lenient too. His dad jokes are funny.
He points out what he requires to be answered differently than in book so attend. No homework! USE his practis tests on Canvas! They are the same problems you get on tests. Call or visit him in person (no email). Answers any question in class. Great greader (extra credit for showing solwing steps). Returns tests calculate the final grade yourself.
Hammond is extremely knowledgeable and well respected. With that being said, he is tough. Do not recommend if you are not good at chemistry. Marks things as partially incorrect so you can go back and fix them. Gives some pointers in class if a lot of students are struggling.
He knows a lot about chemistry and he knows he is amazing at it. He is a tough grader, but it's because he wants us to learn the material. I would take him again!
Great if you want to actually learn and retain information for future chemistry courses, not an easy A if you just need to get through CHEM 121/122 for your degree. No homework only quizzes/tests, not multiple choice but they all have extra credit and he does make several practice quizzes/tests which are pretty much identical to the real thing.
Positive: Quality lectures/demonstrations, approachable, you will actually learn Negative: Does not respond to emails, he will kick you out if he sees your phone in lab, slow grader, returns lab reports w/ grades but grades will be posted at the end of the semester on Canvas Overall: I would not prefer him for lecture, but he is the best for lab
He's tough and old school. No emails, no powerpoints, no videos. I LOVE IT! Lectures are so good: real demonstrations of chemistry concepts in class. I fell in love with chemistry because of his class. There are A LOT of quizzes. But he gives you practice quizzes/exams. Just make sure to do those and you'll be fine. Good luck!
Pay attention to how he says he wants things done, he can be very strict and life is a lot easier if you listen. Once you get past that he's pretty entertaining and pretty much forces you to really understand the material, willing to help you during office hours and even gives some extra points at end of semester.
He will make you work for my grade this semester, and if you do you will pass! His practice test for 2020 was so great and helped me mentally prepare for our exams. Use those, he is old school so everything will be memorization, but trust me you will learn a lot if you do not have time to study or cheat wrong class.
He can a little mean so you better have thick skin if you plan on taking his class. But I will say he is an absolutely awesome professor and great at teaching. His feedback is very helpful, but the delivery can be tough. Don't take it personally. He also gives out a lot of extra credit so it's not too hard to do well.
The class had no homework just tests and quizzes constantly but there was a lot of stuff to remember including the Latin names of the elements. He does not give you a textbook so I had to find one but it is not very helpful. I would not recommend this class if you are not good with lecture only based classes that only and many tests to take.
DON'T TAKE LAB FROM HAMMOND. He is rude to students and insults you when you want to ask a question. He is constantly changing the lab manual and gets upset when you dare to follow the instructions. He gives a quiz at the beginning of lab each day but be prepared for trick questions. He picks favorites in class and ignores others. Avoid at all cost
Professor Hammond is one of the few professors that I've had in chemistry that don't read off slides and actually teach well. His class is difficult and very fast paced, if you dont care to learn chemistry dont take his class, if you WANT to learn take his class. 4 exams, 12 quizzes, ACS as final exam. Drops 2 Quiz, offers 50 bonus points for free.
I wouldn't take his lecture class ever again. He clearly knows what he is talking about, but was not teaching in a way that matched my learning style. I kept having to reference my notes from Chem 108 to understand what he was teaching. Also, he doesn't put in grades until end of semester so you don't know what your grade is most of the time.
He is VERY old school. There are no PowerPoints and you can't get a hold of him online. I took him for both lab and lecture. He comes off a bit rude. He encourages you to ask questions but when you do he makes you seem stupid and gets irritated. You won't know your grade until the very end of the semester.
Took him for an 8 week summer course. Was the most difficult course I have taken. He is very old school, no electronics, keeps track of grades on paper, no cheat sheets, and is picky with his criteria, but he is an excellent professor and human being. He starts off scary, but if you stick with him and put lots of time to study you will be fine.
Def one of the best chem lecturers at CSN. You can tell he likes to teach and is very good at it. I took the 8 week summer class and it was not an easy. Make sure you don't have anything else going on in your life and study NMR before you start!
Professor Hammond seems to not realize that he is teaching at a community college. This is not to say it should be easy, it's not, however he acts as though he has won a Nobel prize and should be worshipped as such. No, he deserves only the respect he gives to his students - so - little to none would be appropriate. Example of why Tenure is bad
Professor is old-school with no PowerPoints or online presence, but the lectures are engaging. Lots of quizzes and exams, but using unstuck ai and practice tests helps a lot. Tough but worthwhile if you want to really learn chemistry.
This class was test heavy, no homework. Professor tends to jump around the book chapters. Will emphasise doing textbook problems but it is not that helpful as he throws curveballs at you. Very particular at grading. Allergic to electronics and email. Quizzes/Tests are timed and you will most likely not have enough time to finish. Do not recommend.
Professor Hammond sparked wonder within me from the very first day. His lectures are very engaging; you can tell he loves to teach. Lots of class involvement, does practice problems on the board, and has notes/practice online. Stay involved and you will succeed. No technology in class or notes on tests, but definitely the best professor I've taken.
Do not take him unless you absolutely have to. His grading makes no sense. I went to tutoring for every single lab assignment and I would still only receive a high C, sometimes a B. For the amount of effort I put into this, I did not see that reflected in my grade. He also rambles for the first hour of lab, you will never get out early.
Good teacher but he'll test you on topics he briefly touched on exams. He'll help you if he sees you genuinely care to learn. His class is not for those who want an easy A, take other professors for that. Free up your time and take easy classes cause juggling this class with a job and/or hard classes is brutal. Barely gives enough time for quizzes.
I took Hammond for lab and he's a tough guy to get around. He's very old school. No technology at all. He cares about his students but expresses it through tough love. Once you get past that, he's a very funny dude and I enjoyed his lab towards the end of the semester. He's very passionate about chemistry and a good professor for lab.
Prof. Hammond is so passionate about his teaching. He's very old-school and does a demo of the lab before you start it, so you don't get confused with the instructions. He cracks jokes here and there. He's a good professor and helps out when you ask.
Lecture, quizzes for every chapter (about one every week). Always extra credit on the quizzes and exams so it's not difficult to do well. Provides previous quizzes and exams on canvas which are really helpful when studying. Tough grader on lab reports, always double check answers and prepare for the prelab quizzes. He is tough but willing to help.
Yes, professor Hammond is a tough teacher. Yes, your tests will be harder than any other csn chem teacher. But you will learn much more than you expect. He goes over all of the answers to tests/quizzes and shows you how to get to the answer. He doesn't use canvas for grades until posting final grade. Very old school. Use the practice exams for help
He's very tough on grading. I wish I took someone else for this lab, he explains and demonstrate every lab with some back stories which is good. But he's very tough on grading and does not help us whatsoever to fix any mistake. His quiz on the beginning are most of the time super hard, just take someone different for lab if you want a good grade
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! Lectures are hard to follow Deducts points on quizzes and exams for literally anything. 1 sig fig off = -1 point, since we do multiple calculations for one problem -1 point will kill you on exams. To further stress you out instead of taking a final written by him we had to take a national chem exam HE MADE ME HATE CHEM
This class was extremely stressful and discouraging. From day one, the professor made it clear he was the toughest grader in the CSN, which created fear instead of confidence. Exams were almost every week with harsh penalties for small mistakes. For the final exam, he tested us on the ACS exam, which was insanely hard. Not recommended.
