Great guy, definitely would take again. His lectures and slides are very organized. The webassigns and tests are straightforward, almost identical problems as whats in class so you know what to expect. Hes a fair guy and offers lots of resources. Hes also really chill and makes the class laugh. Best professor Ive had in the chem department.
He has trouble with consistency in terms of difficulty on the test. First test was hard, second test was super easy, third test was even harder than the first so he had to curve it by 3. Other than that, offers extra credit. Did his webassigns in lecture cause its just him talking. I went over the slides by myself cause its much more effective
Pretty standard lecture class. He was super helpful when I went for office hours and I felt like he really wanted me to get it. Nice guy
Gave extra credit thorough top hat. Tests were a little hard but it is a harder level of chem. His lectures are very clear. I would suggest going to office hours, because he explained things better. Do the in class examples, back of the text book and you'll be fine! He is also nice and very understanding! The multiple choice was partial credit!!
Exams are too different from each other so it's impossible to expect what he will ask about on the next test. His final is too hard and too different from the midterms in format, way of asking stuff, and things he asks about. skipping class is not a problem. his class is too boring. I feel like he doesn't really care how his class does on exams...
This was his first semester at State so the exams were pretty inconsistent in terms of the format and difficulty. He gives partial credit for multiple choice questions and is really good about answering questions during lecture. Attendance isn't mandatory but he offered extra credit through TopHat. Only HW is one webassign per week.
Poor class, very monotone and didn't explain how to do problems very well. He went too fast and tests were not consistent.
As far as chem professors go at NC State, Dr. Martin is probably one of the better ones. Biggest downside was that his tests were very inconsistent and worth most of the grade. Even though his powerpoints were thorough, it was hard to keep up with the speed of each lecture. Extra credit is offered but requires participation and going to class.
Dr. Martin is a pretty good professor when it comes to chemistry at NC State. I suck at chemistry, and his tests were I consistent in terms of difficulty, but Im sure with time they will straighten up. I didnt try nearly as hard in 201 as I did in 101, so I cant blame him. Practice homeworks, your turns and do the top hats and youll do great!
I thought he was pretty good and fair. Lectures were helpful and homework was easy. Definitely will have to study a lot for tests and the final, but I thought all tests were fair.
Dr. Martin is very monotone. He also teaches at step 6 and expects you to already know steps 1-5. We used tophat during class, and when the entire class would get a question wrong, he would do a poor job explaining the concept even the second time around. Definitely take notes of the main topics and then teach them to yourself outside of class
Had him at Furman, and owe it to him to write a good review for the NC State students. Loved the guy, knew a lot about chemistry and relayed it to the class very well. His notes are very detailed and go over all the essential test information. These notes, along with his practice problem handouts, are essential to success. Def recommend to anyone.
Dr. Martin is a great professor. While the subject he taught is difficult on its own, his lectures do a good job of making the course material easier to understand and relevant to the world. He's extremely smart and has a passion for chemistry that's evident. If you study for his class, show up, and do the homework, you should pass no problem.
Dr. Martin is a really good professor, he actually knows what he's talking about. But, the only downside is he goes very fast, which is because there's so much material he has to cover in little time. I went to him for office hours and he was really helpful and slowed things down for me. I am not a chemistry person, but he makes it understandable.
Dr. Martin is definitely one of the better chem profs at State. He goes over everything you need to know for the test in class. If you ever get confused you can always refer back to his slides, which are better than the textbook and super easy to understand and work through.
Dr. Martin is a pretty good professor. Although his lectures are pretty monotonous and boring, he is great one on one. The class was not too difficult, and as long as I payed attention I found that the homework was easy to complete and I did well on the exams.
Dr. Martin is one of the best CH101 professors you can get. His lectures do go pretty fast as other people have said but he explains everything very well so you don't have to teach yourself much. Only five WebAssign homeworks per unit and they're typically not overly difficult or long. Taking him again for CH201 and highly recommend.
Dr. Martin is a generally fair prof. You have to study for his tests but they are doable. Often the way he explains things doesn't make sense but there are plenty of resources online. Does a lot of tophat questions. If the class does poorly on a test he curves it and gives an extra credit assignment. replaces lowest test grade with exam
Easy class with extra credit for every test
Solid professor; pretty standard for an intro chem class. Use the review problems in the textbook to study for the tests. Our class had one big semester-long group project, so choose who you sit with in recitation carefully. Tests are fair and not too challenging, other than the time constraints.
The webassigns are pretty similar to lecture questions and it isn't hard to get 100s on the hw. There's one group project and it's super easy. If you just study the homework, lecture problems, and recitation problems the tests shouldn't be too difficult. There's clear expectations and he curves tests. His class has the best reputation for CH 101.
Dr. Martin taught the topics well but the lectures can be boring at times. The tests are manageable and are curved based on the class median. If you pay attention in class, do the WebAssigns, and study you will be fine!
one of the worst professors at state.
This is the second class I've had with Dr. Matin and he was a great professor in both classes. His lectures can be boring, but he's very straightforward and makes his class easily accessible for anyone willing to at least try. I had Dr. Martin during the coronavirus pandemic, and even then he continued to be a great professor and a resource.
really good prof take him
inconsistent in difficulty of tests but always comes through with the curve. never needed to read the book because he goes over everything in class.
OTHER THAN EXAMS, HOMEWORK, AND TOPHAT PARTICIPATION POINTS ARE THE ONLY GRADES SO IT IS IMPORTANT TO GO TO CLASS TO GET THESE POINTS. EXAMS COUNT FOR A LOT BUT THEY ARE FAIR AND I FOUND THE BEST WAY TO STUDY IS GOING OVER WEBASSIGNS AND TOPHAT QUESTIONS BECAUSE THESE TEND TO BE VERY SIMILAR TO TEST QUESTIONS. TESTS ARE VERY FAIR.
Dr. Martin was a decent professor and explained things very well. However, his lectures consist of him primarily reading from the powerpoint he posts online, with some small quips here and there, and answering questions. Grading is based heavily on the tests, so make sure you study up. He includes a mix of multiple choice and free-response. (CH201)
Great professor, explained things well and was very accessible outside of class, even when we went online. Would recommend taking 201 with him. Tests could be difficult but not impossible if you study and go to class. Very fair grader and wanted students to be successful in the class. Definitely to office hours if you need help!!
Dr. Martin is a really cool guy. Mainly teaches by examples rather than content. Make sure you know how to do the end-of-chapter exercises and homework problems as these make up a majority of the test questions. Overall a good pick for CH 201.
Martin was one of the best chem professors. Hes a good lecturer and all his notes are available online. He used top hat at the beginning and throughout class as a participation grade. HW and participation dont count for much but his tests are straight forward. Review the HWs and top hats
TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN. Tests are super fair and similar to homework and tophat problems. I had him during COVID and he was accessible in person and when everything went online. Posts notes online and they include everything you need to know, so no need to read the book. Very caring and overall a great professor. Would take him again without a doubt.
This was my second time taking Chem 101 at State and the first experience was horrible so I didn't have high expectations entering this five-week summer class. Despite the fact that I was basically taking notes and doing homework almost every day, the work I put in paid off and showed in the test scores.
Hes funny and relatively understanding. Tests arent super hard and he curved them, but you definitely need to study. Top hat participation required.
I took this class over the summer online. Dr. Martin is a very caring prof. I highly recommend going to office hours, because he'll spend as much time as you need to make sure you understand how to do questions. He also will stop and explain questions that people get wrong in class. Overall, very good experience.
Dr. Martin is amazing. He clearly cares about his students, and if you send him an email needing help he will make sure you get that help. I've gotten multiple responses within five minutes from him which is amazing. Also he played jazz while we were joining the zoom which is hype
Dr. Martin is a great professor! I didn't do very well, but it wasn't cause of him - I just suck at chemistry. Lots of hw, but manageable. Tests are difficult, but if you study a lot, you'll do fine. Recitation is amazing bc you are put in a group of like 3 other people, so it helps a lot with learning the material. Super funny & fire music taste!!
Dr Martin is a beast!! Super relatable and kind to all of his students. Knows the material very well and is always willing to take the classes opinion into consideration when making decisions. Great guy, would definitely recommend.
Dr. Martin has been amazing, playing music before class and while we waited for breakout rooms to open. He starts every lecture by going over ways to get help and encouraging us to use the resources provided. He stays after every class for questions and always goes above and beyond to explain things. He genuinely cares about students learning.
Dr. Martin genuinely cares about his students. When classes went online, he pushed back tests and hw to make sure everyone could finish everything. Always takes student input into consideration. Checked up on our mental health in the semester. Lectures were extremely clear, gave interesting and useful examples. One of the best prof I've ever had.
Dr. Martin is really awesome but don't expect an easy class. I have failed all the exams, but all my other grades brought me up to a B. He truly cares about his students' success and wellbeing and his transition to online learning has been really awesome and makes it much more manageable for students. Highly recommend taking CH101 with Dr. Martin.
Definitely take him. Show up to class because he tracks the attendance using an app. Tests are fair enough, everything from the test is just him using the webassign hw and tophat questions. Tests are curved and he is always available to help students either during the office hours or he allows students to ask questions after each class ends.
Dr Martin was hands down my favorite professor this semester. He made chem extremely understandable and he was super organized even in the midst of online learning, I made sure to take him for chem 201 next semester. He was very understanding and helped us out when everyone got kicked off campus. 100% recommend!!
Tests get more and more difficult as the semester progresses, but if you go to lectures and do the homework you will be okay.
ayyye dr martin was the best, tbh I studied very little for the tests and had an 80 on the first one than 100s and 90s on the others. i thought they got easier but some people may disagree. his lectures are veryyy helpful in my opinion. love this man. take his class if you wanna understand chemistry and get a good grade. also really good at emails.
Mr. Martin the G. For first-year chemistry, he's the guy you want. Chill, laughable, knowledgeable on the topics, etc. Glad I could have him. Do your work and attend the SI sessions for assistance if you need and you will be fine. :)
No matter who you take, CH101 is a lot of work. Dr. Martin's class wasn't an exception, but all the work assigned helps you learn the material. Dr. Martin listened to our feedback and adjusted how he did his lectures accordingly. The lectures were very clear and well explained. He also played great music before every class!
Really good professor overall. Continually gives you opportunities to practice the material. It is A TON of work so be prepared to do multiple hours a day. Overall the test difficulty ranges.
Dr. Martin is super chill and he is easy to work with. It's chemistry so it's kind of a grind but watch his lectures and you'll be fine.
Dr. Martin was a good prefessor for basic chemistry. He was super chill and felt very accessible to get help outside of class. The tests felt very fair to me, many of the questions were based off homework and in-class assignments. The lectures are not exactly exciting, they get to the point and allow you to do practice problems with the topic.
Dr. Martin is luckily a very understanding professor- he wants his students to do well. I had trouble following his teaching style sometimes (he does flipped classroom- watch lectures outside of class and do practice problems in class). The workload wasn't too bad in my opinion, make sure you are on top of your assignments!
At end of semester I found out I didn't need this class anymore so I stopped trying, but he's a great teacher. Genuinely cares about students' wellbeing and makes sure he does everything he can to make his students understand.
Dr. Martin is a solid professor. The class itself was not hard in my opinion and his tests are pretty much straight from the hw and lectures so not too hard. I had him during COVID but he seemed like a super fun professor to have in person. 3 exams and 1 final with web assigns that were due on Fridays. Doable and easy class, just put in the effort
Dr. Martin is a great person and the best professor I've had so far. All of his assignments are intentional and actually prepare you for the tests. He explains everything in depth and does several practice problems for each topic. If you study his review and pay attention to lectures then the tests are not that bad. Take him if you get the chance.
Easy professor, but not very intelligent. I aced the tests and sat on my computer pretending to pay attention while he wasted most of class. Maybe it is just because this class was online, but he spent way too long going over a few problems, it seemed like he isn't really all there and the University is just sort of putting him in charge of Quant.
Hes an okay professor. I wouldnt plan on learning too much from him, youll have to teach yourself before you show up to class. My other friends didnt like him because hes boring, but thats the nature of these weed out courses.
Not a fan, personally I thought he was too into feeling like he was the alpha to hear students concerns, I wouldnt recommend taking him at least for 201 if you can avoid it. You will have more assignments than necessary and it becomes overwhelming, especially because he doesnt pace the lectures (more like recitation) very smoothly. Good luck
My boyfriend and I took him at the same time since were in the same track, we both thought he was okay as a prof but didnt really understand teaching as much as he probably does studying... maybe hes a good grad student, but I felt the class stressed participation more than actual learning. If youre better at listening than doing, youll b okay
Prof Martin seemed very unenthusiastic about quantitative, Ive heard he was okay in gen chem but if you take him for chem 201 youre basically teaching yourself
Dr. Martin was fine. You basically teach yourself with preclass videos, and spend class time going over problems. We had webassign homework due on Fridays, and also a packback. Tbh the packback was so completely useless, but you could easily get a 100 on it and boost your grade.
Dr. Martin did not really appear to care about students, did not give me any vibes of interest towards chemistry, and seemed upset that he is teaching at all. Im glad I dont have to take him again
Dr. Martin is honestly a great choice for quant chem. He gives you tons of practice problems through WebAssign homework, textbook problems, and even problems to work on in class. The homework and PackBacks were super tedious, but it ended up boosting my grade quite a bit. Exams were a bit tough but problems from the textbook helped a lot.
Not advised. The examiner has not been held to the standard necessary for proficient instruction at this institution.
Really a poor professor. He really lacks any teaching ability and just does problems on a board. The class was flipped so I'd watch the lectures and feel confused afterward anticipating guidance in class. Because we were expected to "know" the material before class, he'd skim over things and leave me even more confused and stressed. Lacks eympathy.
I think Martin is one of the best chem professors to take here. You do a lot of the work on your own outside of class, but he is very invested in helping students really learn. He can also be pretty entertaining which is nice. His tests are not too difficult and you can do very good in the class without getting an A on every test.
Martin basically relies on his pre-recorded lectures to teach. Most of the time you are teaching yourself the material. The tests are not too far off from the practice problems. Overall I would say he is just okay. Nothing special but not terrible.
Dr. Martin was always available for office hours and had tons of resources available for you when you needed them. Overall very helpful and always willing to answer questions. The outside of class lectures and pre-class assignments got annoying but I honestly think they helped in the long run. would def take again!
Dr. Martin's course is only easy if you show up already knowing all the material. If not, you are expected to teach yourself the material, and then show up to lecture three times a week with a full understanding of each new concept. Your best bet is to focus most of your time on the e-book.
He offers a ton of extra resources like SI, office hours, and tutoring that are very helpful if you take advantage of them. You will have to teach yourself a substantial amount of material as his lectures don't cover enough, but he makes videos that do cover everything. Tests are very similar to the practice problems he posts.
Dr. Martin does not go enough in depth into the material that you are tested on. The problems he gives in class differentiate too much from the problems on the exams to be useful, and the textbooks information goes above and beyond the content on the exams. This lack of consistency between exam and course content heavily harmed my grades.
Dr. Martin is as good of a professor you can get for 50 minute classes 3x a week. However, I always watched Dr. Petrovich's lectures videos which helped understand the material A LOT better; they're a bit longer than the videos Dr. Martin does but I always ended up scoring higher than the class average:)
He's an ok professor, but he teaches flipped classroom, so you need to do a lot of work outside of class. He teaches really fast IMO, and I wasn't a fan of the "flipped" classroom style, so I didn't really like his lecture compared to what I had heard about the other profs. But, he was very efficient at answering any emails or moodle questions.
Dr. Martin is a great professor and provides many of resources. His lectures skim over material, but he posts online videos of himself teaching the material in depth. If you do not watch the pre-class videos you won't pass. Tests are all multiple choice, but still difficult. You have to be in class or watch the live because he grades participation.
Dr. Martin is a great professor. If there's one thing I took away from his class, it's to READ THE TEXTBOOK. Lectures are posted on Moodle and you should always watch them before class. If you don't put in the work, you won't get the grade you want. Dr. Martin is also great at replying quickly. He genuinely wants success for his students.
Martin is a good teacher and his tests are representative of the material. Make sure to review and study on your own. He only gives you the material to learn the bare minimum. USE THE TEXTBOOK and do practice questions. Don't fall behind on the lectures either!
Dr. Martin was probably my best professor from this semester. I had never taken a chemistry course before in my life, so, while there was a lot of homework, I always felt really prepared for each test. Participation and homework points make up a decent amount of your grade, and he is really easy to understand and will answer any questions you have.
Attendance is graded but you can always join the class online and still get the credit. Overall he's a pretty good teacher and he organizes the lectures well. Make sure to pay attention to the lectures as they're very important when it comes to exam material.
He teaches using a flipped classroom, which may not be great for some people. However, I had some experience with chemistry going into the class from high school, so it worked for me. The tests aren't that difficult and there's not too much homework to worry about.
Lots of opportunities to bring up/cushion grades; If u do your homework, u will have lots of these extra points. His lectures are clear & taking notes/participating in tophat is important. Lots of homework but all of it is helpful/essential(no busywork). If you know how to do the TopHat participation/WebAssign questions, you are good for the test.
Dr. Martin is a great teacher for a tough class. You might struggle if you don't like flipped classroom but he's very helpful and has lots of opportunities for extra credit. You can tell he cares. Test content tended to be harder than the study guides but was still manageable. He's chill but still be prepared to put in the work for this class.
Dr. Martin is a good professor. He s very good at explaining things and offering hours to help other students. A lot of the class is just making sure you study well for the test and the Webassigns will help you prepare for them. If you do practice problems, it will help you. Be prepared to put the work in as you would for any chem class.
hes super nice - tries to help even when he doesnt have to. i missed a deadline to turn some missed work in and he still raised my grade. as long as u work, u genuinely will do good. i had petro last sem for ch101 and hes so much better. his grading is super fair and he has a lot of ways to gain points so the tests dont completely drag u down.
Love Dr. Martin!! I took him for 101 and 201. It is a flipped classroom so you take notes before lecture and then come to class and do practice problems and work with your peers. Definitely go to class, it helps :)
I found this class difficult because of the way tests were formatted. They were all multiple choice but that meant that there were no opportunities for partial credit. He did seem to care about his students and weighed the tests so that they would not completely ruin your grade if you did poorly. Going to class makes a difference!
HE IS AMAZING FOLKS HE IS A BETTER TEACHER THAN MOST PEOPLE IN THE DEPARTMENT
you do a lot of work on your own in this course. all you really do in the class is do practice problems. preclass assignments are very helpful when reviewing and so are the practice exams. exams are very long but are based on the material. if you do the homework and assignments then you will do well. required discussion posts are useless.
This class is flipped so you learn the material before coming to class. Honestly, in person lectures weren't useful but attendance was mandatory. Make sure to keep up with the video lectures- do not fall behind; this class is a lot of hard work. Tests were fair and reflected class material accurately. Would recommend taking Dr.Martin for CH101.
He was a great teacher with very helpful videos in which he did the lecturing. During class he would review what you learned from the videos. He is a very nice guy, answers questions well, and makes pretty easy tests. I would highly recommend taking my boy Martin.
Pros: homework and other activities notably count towards one's final grade, so there's a lot to buffer low exam scores. Tests were ok, final was brutal. Cons: Nothing was really "taught" in this class. Quantitative slide content was just read to us. Class time was just doing problems. Felt like groundhog's day. Weekly homework took forever.
He does not teach anything in class itself, instead does example problems. The majority of the class got the problems incorrect, and he still does not further explain them. He gives an insane amount of homework each week. If you are super good at chemistry, you'll probably be fine, but if this is a subject you struggle in, DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dr. Martin's CH201 course is designed to help you pass. The course is not exam-heavy, thankfully. Some lectures, he really makes class interesting (he will provide real-world applications). As for Dr. Martin himself, he is such a caring person. I misjudged a HW's due date and he gave me an extension without me even asking. Take him, he's great.
This is probably my least favorite class out everything I have to take in Human Bio. I would rather take 4 more organic classes than this. His lectures are oh so boring. His voice remains the same tone no matter where he is talking. I can't learn anything. This is coming from someone who got A's in both orgo and biochem. Avoid this boring class.
Oh lord where do I even start with this man. Great dude, is willing to help you out as needed. However, he can not and should not be allowed to teach. Terrible lectures, crap ton of homework every week. If you get stuck with him, all I can say is good luck.
1. All material is posted on the first day 2. Attendance is mandatory and is counted as a grade 3. You will only spend class time doing busy work or practicing problems 4. All tests are multiple-choice, so there is NO redemption if you did the work right 5. Teaches as if online 6. If you have the choice, please do NOT take him!
Dr. Martin is great, my problem isn't with him. It's with his flipped classroom set up. Some people do well with it and I did in CH101 so I didn't think it would be a big deal. I was wrong. If you have a heavy course load, the flipped classroom style will NOT help you out. It just means you have to take more time outside of class to teach yourself.
He expects a lot outside of class, but goes over it anyways the next day. He grades notes, and doubled down on how strictly he graded notes at the end of the class. For a qualitative chemistry course, he tests too much for concepts. You need to pay $30 for a subpar AI grader that can easily be cheesed. It wasn't hard tho, so he's just ok at best.
Would give a 0 if possible
I was only in his class for a couple of lectures before I dropped so take this review with a pinch of salt. It seems that everyone is mentioning the same reason why I dropped- the course layout. He's an incredibly sweet guy, but the flipped classroom was hell. So much pre-work packed in, alongside long laborious Webassigns. Terrible lecture videos!
Right away you can tell Professor Martin means well but the way he goes about everything is wrong. He tries to give you every single bit of information but it ends up being more confusing because he talks around the point. He asks that no one use electronics during class but then uses tophat for participation and attendance throughout the class.
Would recommend, but be ready to do a lot of pre-class work (learning the material via his online lectures) before coming to class. Otherwise, you will have a hard time following along in class. Tests were all multiple choice, but you still need to know how to do the math for everything. Overall not bad but you need to put he work in.
He seems like a really nice guy but this has got to be the WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN! The "flipped classroom" model was more of an excuse for you to teach yourself everything. His class was so boring and monotone. Unless you are really strong in chemistry and are good at teaching yourself chemistry with his "tools," good luck to you.
I second the last post. Dr. Martin is so nice, but the preclass material was ridiculous. Not only was it a TON of work, but the lecture videos were so unclear. I came out of CH101 with an A+ and STILL struggled with his class. The only saving grace was the inclusion of Petrovich's videos in the preclass work, which were amazing. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
At least for my CH 201 class Martin had a flipped classroom set up that just personally doesn't work for me, but it may work for you. Seems like a good person and he can have fun moments in the lectures. The lecture were just running through examples and there were videos that you were supposed to watch before each class.
Martin is a good guy but his class is genuinely awful. The flipped classroom style is an excuse for him to not teach. I hate the way he teaches and his pre-class assignment videos make no sense whatsoever leaving me more confused than I was to start with.
This class takes up ALL of my time. The flipped classroom makes it nearly impossible to learn anything, he does not teach very well in the videos. I have learned most of the material in this class from youtube. Attendance is mandatory and tests are worth 40% of your grade. If you want to teach yourself for an entire semester, go for it.
If I would've known that this class was flipped, I would never have taken it. The class takes up all of my time, with pre-class assignments, textbook readings, and homework. I had to teach myself the majority of the topics through youtube or the textbook. While the professor himself is very nice, his teaching style is very difficult.
Dr. Martin is a great person who definitely cares about students well-being and success, however the flipped model is completely ineffective in this case with 100+ students. Preclass videos are not helpful, lectures are mandatory but were useless; no material is taught during lecture, only TopHat questions. Tests and homework were very reasonable.
If you can handle a TON of work, and a flipped classroom, then go ahead. While Dr. Martin is a good person, his teaching style made things really difficult. If you get behind, you are lowkey screwed. I could not catch a break this semester, and while my mental health rapidly declined I continued to drown in the overwhelming amount of work.
Dr. Martin was an amazing professor and I loved this class! He uses a flipped classroom style for teaching which was very helpful for me! Attendance and top hat participation are important so show up and focus! The tests are pretty straight forward as long as you do the work, participate, and study!
Nice guy but the flipped classroom is pretty awful. This class took up 50% of my time as the pre-class lectures and assignments were mandatory, but useless, so I had to teach myself everything anyways. Homework and tests were fair, but the timing of exams sucked (day before fall break, day after Halloweekend, and Monday after Thanksgiving break).
Dr. Martin's class either works for you or it doesn't. Personally, I enjoyed the flipped classroom setup. It kept me constantly exposed to the content, and him working out example problems in lecture (with explanation) was helpful for those topics I was confused on. If you can handle a flipped classroom setup, definitely take Dr. Martin's class.
My main problem was with the set up of his classroom. He does flipped classroom where you have to watch mandatory lecture videos and take a quiz before lecture. Then in lecture, he goes over practice problems. End up doing chemistry every day, anywhere from 1 to 3 hrs a day. If you get behind, you have work 5x harder as the class moves very fast
He's a good guy who means well, but his class is just horrendous and he has no respect for your time. There are hours of busywork assigned each week, including pre-recorded lectures. He assigns those as an excuse not to teach in class. his lectures are completely useless, with him rushing through questions without explaining anything.
He is a great professor who taught really well and would stop the class to answer questions. He does care about people's opinions and sent out a survey to help improve his class mid semester. I learned the material really well (without having to read the textbook). The only thing I didn't like was that he assigns videos to watch before class.
The class was a flipped classroom, where you teach yourself with complicated videos that make no sense. In class, he reviews about 5 questions where you don't understand anything. The preclass videos are also very time-consuming.
He uses a flipped class style where you learn the material on your own. Most days he used ONLY practice problems. I don't do well with this type of teaching as I need walk-through examples before I can confidently do problems on my own. Wouldn't take it again, but if you can learn on your own on top of other courses go for it.
Flipped class which did not help, test did not always reflect what was taught.
Dr. Martin was a very approachable professor, but the flipped classroom style was not my favorite. Most of lectures were just example problems which were not too bad as long as you kept up with the pre-class assignments.
Martin's flipped classroom creates a lot of pre-class assignments next to the actual homework which is a chore. He's a funny dude, cares a ton, and the exams are reasonable. Even if you're not good at chemistry and the exams get to you, keep up with the assignments and you'll be fine. Definitely difficult but with some forgiveness in grading.
Does a flipped classroom style, which I personally didn't hate. A lot of assignments outside of class. The packbacks are so unnecessary but they count towards your grade. He did a lot of practice during lecture. The actual homeworks were harder than the exams itself IMO. The exams were pretty straightforward only 30 questions- all multiple choice.
The only reason I got a B+ is because I suck at Chem and was more focused on Calc. Dr. Martin is amazing and always willing to help!
Dr. Martin is very kind and pauses frequently to make sure students know the material. Sometimes he goes so slow that it can be irritating how little is covered in a lecture. He provides a lot of time for practice problems in class. He is not flexible with the final exam. I didn't get much out of the lectures because I could do TopHat remotely.
This is a great guy and overall is very understanding. I legit forgot to do an assignment that was due at midnight and was prepared to cook up a good story of why I didn't do it and went to him the next day and said, “Hey I'm sorry I didn't get it done and-” he interrupted me and said, “I gotchu.” He gave me an extension immediately.W man.
Lectures are pretty boring, the pre class assignments take up so much time. But overall its manageable
If you're not chem minded DO NOT take this class. It was a swapped classroom and students were not made aware of that until the first few days of class. He was super nice at the beginning of the semester but quickly got a terrible attitude by the end. Overall I hated that class but if you're good with science and learning VERY quickly go for it.
Dr. Martin is a very nice professor, however his class is quite boring. He teaches in a "flipped classroom" where you have a pre-class assignment due before every single lecture and the mandatory lecture is kinda pointless. All of the homework is CH101 work, and sometimes is different to what he teachers.
The professor uses a flipped classroom style, which can be hit or miss. Assignments and pre-class work are time-consuming, but the exams are reasonable. Consider using Unstuck study and other resources to supplement the material if needed.
Dr. Martin is awesome! He's extremely caring about his students on a personal level. He teaches via pre-class videos, then does practice problems in class. The videos took around 30 minutes, 3 days a week. He explains content very well and slowly-paced. Tests and homework were fairly easy; it's not hard to earn an A so long as you try!
Goes over content partially in class however a majority is doing practice problems so you often have to learn through textbook. He is able to help you whenever you ask him before or after class. Pre class assignments can be tedious but not difficult, just pay attention to vids. drops lowest test for final if higher. good prof overall though!
the actual worst person i have ever met, told me to learn how to write faster when i asked if he would upload the slides after class (since he refused to previously)
Cool guy. Flipped class room so it's normally 3 videos that you watch the night before class that are 3-9 mins long and then you view that same material in class from lecturing and practice problems. Test are all multiple choice
Flipped classroom that does not benefit most people. His pre-class lectures are decent which leads to not being prepared for certain subjects on the test. Also, you will only go through roughly 4 examples in a 1h 15min lecture but most of that time is you solving it, not him going over it. Overall, you spend a lot of time for nothing in return.
Really nice guy! Class is just difficult. He does a flipped classroom, so you watch videos outside of class and do practice problems in class. Gives helpful extra practice and old exams to study with too. Study hard!
CH201 is a difficult class itself. He's one of the better professors, compared to other CH201 teachers. He has a chill vibe but can't explain topics in a simple manner, which can be difficult. Had an extra credit opportunity to increase HW grade. Grade consists of many categories, not just tests. Test are MCQs. Flipped classroom. Practice-heavy.
not only is he my advisor, but we literally teach ourselves outside of class and all we do in class is spend 50 minutes working on practice problems, lectures are done by ourselves online and he spends more time on tophat than actually teaching. do not take this class, the only thing saving me is that I took ap chem in high school.
This class is primarily taught through an online learning program called REAL CHEM. There are no physical lectures, just practice problems based on what you read. Be prepared to teach yourself. Super nice guy though.
Very knowledgeable on the subject, but dismisses students' questions as "stupid questions." This is especially tough in an intro class - most students don't have prior knowledge of chemistry. The textbook was dense and explained problems in a different way than he did. Though Prof. Martin does seem to care about his students personal wellbeing.
This is another flipped classroom, BUT his exams were just like the practice tests. He went over examples in class that he put on the exam, and truly loved cracking jokes to all of us. It was more daunting in my head than in real life. Really enjoyed the class time. He did many out-of-classroom activities, but honestly, BS it.
If you took CHEM in high school, you will be fine and if you didn't, you will still be fine just may need to study a little more. Lectures were posted. Gave practice tests. I don't think he is the best professor for explaining things. Recommend going to David Clark labs for extra help. When studying for tests make sure to study the TERMS.
