Milanese is always available to help students through email and office hrs. However, she tends to contradict herself and if she tells you something you wrote is good one day, it doesn't mean she will think the same thing the next day. It is hard to determine how she comes up with her grades at all and the grammer and pop quizzes don't help.
Love her! She's amazingly helpful! Office hours are the best. Some of the readings are dry, but she loves group discussion. Just say a lot and she's like you. And she's pretty funny sometimes.
Amazing! Loved her class. Passionate about her teaching, very helpful in office hours and cares about your well being. Not an easy class that you can slack off and get by in - but I actually learned something. I feel like my writing has improved! Group discussions are amazing and she leads them well. One class a week I looked forward going to!
Tough grader, but fair. Hilarious and really caring- really notices who talks in class and takes students' theories seriously. Got o office hours just to chat. This lady is INSANE. Has a deep and true love for The New Yorker. I always look forward to going to this class for hte discussions and the madness.
She's fantastic! Very helpful during appointments and is always upbeat in class. Encourages class discussions and actually challenges your writing in order to make you improve. She's a harsh grader but you leave the class with tons of improvement.
Marisa is amazing! Tough grader, but if you go to her for help about topics she will really help you get a better grade. Always do the re-writes. Extremely helpful and fun. Really cares about her students!
TAKE ANY CLASS YOU CAN WITH THIS WOMAN. She's fun, cute, and easily excited. She has high standards and makes you want to work hard to live up to them. My writing improved more during a semester with her than a year in AP English.
Absolutely wonderful. I use to hate/dread writing assignments and now I enjoy writing. Hard class though, but go see her in the writing center and she will clear all of your major writing issues. Do the readings so you can stand out. very nice and spontaneous
absolutely phenomenal teacher- her insights are fantastic, the socratic seminar style perfected, and while her class may not be the easiest one ever, her conferences are always so mind-clearing, writing the paper suddenly becomes one of the best assignments ever- also, she UNDERSTANDS where students are coming from and what they have to deal with.
Professor Milanese doesn't teach boring material, but even so, she can always make things interesting. She's a tough grader, but is always fair and gives awesome insight...I learned so much! She's a wonderful teacher- take this class!
She is a really awesome person and a huge help. She is indeed a tough grader on papers but if you go talk to her, she will give you more than enough help. If you really participate in discussions and show her you care, you will get a good grade, despite her tough grading on papers. HIGHLY recommend her class.
She's a great professor and really engaging. She's funny and cares about the students improving and gives great advice on how to increase your writing skill. Writing is an extremely dull subject, but she makes it interesting. Take her class!
She is a tough grader on papers but she is AMAZING when you ask her for help. She never shuts people down when they have an opinion- even if what you say is stupid. She's a great writing professor. Make sure your rough draft and final draft are worlds apart because she's really into having big improvements between the two.
Milanese is one of the most kindest, caring and insightful teachers at Boston University. If you can, definetely take a class with this admirable teacher.
Really wonderful professor. Such a genuinely nice person and a great help for improving your writing. Does not grade extremely easily but is very fair. I highly recommend any class with her.
She's an amazing professor. She's really engaging and she knows what's up. I had a lot of fun in her class despite the fact I really dislike writing as a subject. I never dreaded going, which is saying a lot. Take any class you can with her.
This class was a treat during the week even though it was hard. Marisa is DEFINITELY a tough grader but if you take advantage of her office hours and the writing workshops she provides, she's very helpful in telling you where you went wrong. She expects a lot of her students though so unless you're an exceptional writer, don't expect to get that A.
What a wonderful teacher! Difficult (I found myself celebrating B's), but absolutely knows her stuff- she'll have you engaged by the end of the class, too. Workshops and Office Hours are very valuable- make good use of them and watch your writing get better, fast.
Dear freshman, TAKE MARISA's WR100 or WR150 class. She is a professor who truly cares about her students both inside and outside of the classroom; she wants to see you exceed. She is not the easiest of graders, but her feedback is terrific and will help you develop and strengthen your paper and topic even more. Her class will be your favorite!
She is amazing. She is always helpful. She is hilarious. She is engaged. She is excited. She really wants to hear what you have to say. She's blunt and tough but that makes you stronger - and if you go to office hours and writing tutors, you're sure to leave that class a better writer.
I think she is an incredibly caring woman, always offering excessive office hours and conference meetings. On the other hand, her class was very tedious. If you have any interest in having challenging intellectual conversation, it won't happen here. we spent the entire class paraphrasing what we read for hw.
Awesome class. I learned so much. Such a helpful, fun, and smart woman.
Very charismatic down-to-earth teacher. Passionate about the topic of the course (education), which makes it more interesting than I thought it could be. The readings were easy and everything was discussed thoroughly in class. She does not pressure to contribute in class discussions. Her class had a very chill, relaxed atmosphere.
She's very enthusiastic about what she talks about and occasionally tells you funny stories and lets you joke around. She's strict about attendance (5 absences lowers your grade). But she helped me improve my writing.
She is one of the greatest professors I've ever had. Asks you to call her by her first name and will chat with you during office hours. She is incredibly helpful and passionate, and makes you passionate about the topic too. I thought I was a really good writer before this class, but she made me so much better. Absolutely take this class!
She is incredible!! Definitely take this class...It was the first writing class I took at BU and I have nothing bad to say about it. Lovedd her
Amazing professor, extremely helpful and considerate, especially during her office hours. I once told her that I was worried about my grade, and she actaully graded and sent it to me the next day, a week before everyone else! Her grading is strict though.
Marisa is incredible. She has a personal stake in each one of her students, moreso than any teacher i've ever had, and this was just a freshman writing class! Our whole class LOVED her, she's hilarious, fun, passionate and intelligent. DEFINITELY take documentary film with her if you can get into it!!
Her doc film class was not the easiest but she made it so unbelievably fun and interesting. She is so upbeat and passionate about the subject which makes you enjoy it just as much. She is very helpful & genuinely cares for her students not just academically. She is always there to help with conferences or by email. I highly recommend her.
She is actually a beast. I really really enjoyed the class. She is funny and really smart ad invested in her students.
I LOVE her!! She is by far the best writing professor I've had at BU so far... in fact she's probably my favorite of all time. Love Love Love her, I grew so much as a writer and as a student. She made it so easy to approach and ask questions, get engaged in the class where normally I'd just chill in the back. I recommend her 110%!!
amazing teacher! she's incredibly helpful and approachable. she made the class pretty interesting. she's a hard grader but she definitely made me a better writer. TAKE HER!
Absolutely loved her! such a fantastic teacher. she is always willing to help you and she really knows and loves what she does. she is a difficult grader, but go to office hours as much as you can she will really help you with your writing. she likes to see you develop throughout the semester. definitely take her if you get the opportunity!!!
If you can, take her class. She is AMAZING! She wants students to do well and understand the material. She's incredibly knowledgeable and always willing to help! On top of that, she's freaking hilarious. She also just genuinely cares about the subject and the students. Do not pass up the opportunity to take her class!
She is GREAT! She really cares about her students and is always enthusiastic. I highly recommend her. She is a hard grader but her class in definitely worth it!
I had Marisa for summer at BU. She is GREAT and HELPFUL. I am an international student so WR100 is kinda a challenge for me at first. I dont think I can go through this without her help. Marisa the BEST <3
A very helpful teacher with a bright attitude. She takes great care of all her students and encourages them at her best effort. Yet, she is very strict about attending class and turning things at time.
She is a nice professor to be in class with. I admit her classes were very fun very useful and she helps students a lot. However I thought she was a really hard grader. She even said she'd raise a letter grade if you participate in class and I did that so much yet it didn't make a difference. that angered me as I think i deserve a better grade
Marisa is hands down the BEST PROFESSOR I've ever had. She is SO interested in helping you do well, she's fascinating to listen to, and she's about the nicest person you'll ever meet. Spots in her class get taken extremely quickly, so if you have a 9 AM registration time, DON'T EVEN HESITATE- Take this class. You won't regret it!
Amazing Professor! Really gets to know the students and actually cares about them. She breaks down that Student/Teacher barrier. She's always willing to help and is great during office hours. She is a bit of a tough grader on essays though. Overall loved this class and really built an interest for documentary film.
Professor Milanese is an amazing teacher. I loved going to her class and even though it involved a lot of reading and screenings, I was excited to participate. She's super helpful with writing papers, and really wants you to succeed. Love her!
Professor Milanese is one of the best at BU. I had her for Global Documentaries and it was one of my favorite classes at BU. Milanese is very enthusiastic and makes her classes interesting and enjoyable. You watch really great films for the course.
Wonderful teacher and fantastic class. Global Documentaries is very interesting. It's a lot of work and she grades pretty hard, but it's worth it.
She really tries to help you if you ask for it. She wants you not only to pass, but really get better at your writing as well. I believed I had no writing skills going in, but she really made me feel more confident in my writing by the end of the semester. Her class is easygoing and she makes it interesting and fun. Great personality.
I adore Mar-ee-sa. The class was very interesting (films, readings, discussion) and challenging (a good challenging, you want to approve... you learn a lot). Definitely one of the best choices for writing. She was very enthusiastic and connects with every student and funny and inspirational. Take the class.
If you like challenges, if you want to get the most out of WR100, if you love documentary films, then she is your first choice!
This is my first time of rating a professor. Professor Milanese is very passionate about her job of teaching, documentary films and research. She helped me a lot with my paper. She gave good advice and even showed me the articles that she find helpful to my paper. Her class is very fun if you are interested in movies.
Professor Milanese changed writing for me, and she helped me so much to finding my major at BU. Super engaging and genuinely interested in helping and hearing her students out. Grading is fair, might not be an easy A, but as long as you put in effort and talk to her, she won't grade you poorly.
Great teacher. She is very enthusiastic and engaging. Her methods of teaching and in-class discussions make class exciting. No final exam.
She is the BEST teacher I met in BU. You won't regret taking for class, whether for credit or for interest. The workload is big, but all your hard work is worth it.
As a transfer student I was annoyed that BU denied many of my courses, including my college comp. course. I later discovered that Marisa was the one who denied my credit; however, by the end of the semester I found myself glad that I was forced to take her course. She's just that good. To anyone who is considering her course I say take it!
I love Professor Milanese. Her classes are very well thought out, there is a specific learning objective from each class. Quite a lot of homework though, but she gives detailed feedback on your papers and is very encouraging too. Your writing will definitely improve through this course!
Easily one of the best professors at BU. You can clearly tell she's passionate about what she does. She genuinely cares about the students whether it's in or out of the classroom. She will make you want to write papers. Global Doc is great because you get to pick your own topic for the 2 papers and she's very open to ideas. All around great person.
AMAZING! she explains everything well, and loves what she does! respect her work and she will respect yours
One of the best professors I've had here, try and she'll meet you more than halfway
Hands down the best professor I'll ever be lucky enough to have. She really cares about every one of her students, memorizing all our names from the first week. You can really see yourself improve. She is very clear on what she wants us to do. I can't say there isn't a lot of work to do but they're all worth it.
I love her so much and she's always open to help you on your papers and gives amazing feedback. Even if you couldn't go to office hours, she would find other ways to help you. She makes class extremely interesting and overall, she's an amazing person and professor.
Honestly, I chose this class because I thought I would be reading fewer books, but in the end, it turned about to be one of my favorite classes. She made every aspect of the class interesting and engaging, and her seminars were amazingly helpful.
Professor Milanese is a phenomenal professor to have. She sees every student as an individual and cares for everyone's success. If there's any way you can get her as a professor, do it!
She is the absolute best! She helps, and is caring and super chill. She will change the way you think and write, and is honestly the writing teacher I've ever had. Super knowlegable and is just wonderful. If you can, get her!
She is fantastic. I've taken her for wr120GloDoc and wr152CultofColl. There are small homework assignments due before every class, but it's graded on completion. 2-3 essays during the semester. Very helpful in office hours, definitely helps to improve your grade. If you put in the work on the major assignments, you will do very well in this class.
She is so so sweet and super relatable. She tries really hard to make class fun and is very approachable. Her workload is super manageable with 2-3 small assignments per week that lead up to bigger assignments such as papers. She is not a difficult grader as long as you put in the work and follow along.
Marisa (as she prefers to be called) is an absolute gem. She's comedic and beyond qualified, so class is never a drag. The WR152 workload is a bit heavy but Marisa lays the entire class schedule out in the syllabus and sticks to it. She's responsive to student feedback as far as deadlines and needing help or extensions (only 2 one-day extensions)
Milanese is an amazing professor, she cares what she does and you can tell. I took her global documentary WR120 class and generally expects us to finish a movie within one to two class periods and write a reflection. She gives some of the best writing feedback but you will have to work hard in this class, very hard.
Professor Milanese is amazing! 100% take her class! It's not an easy A ... you have to work for it by really taking her feedback and going to office hours if you want to do well. The topic of this class is super interesting - I was never bored and always excited for class! My writing has really improved so much thanks to Prof. Milanese!
Marisa is great! She does contract grading so youre guaranteed a B+ if you do all the assignments on time. And you can do extra labor units to bump your grade up, so I ended with an A. Shes so compassionate and understanding as well. A great professor overall and I would HIGHLY recommend taking her if you can.
Marisa is a great professor who genuinely cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. She utilizes contract grading which helps reduce stress greatly and allows you to have more creative freedoms. The extra labor opportunities for a higher grade are very fair and doable if you want to get above a B+. Overall, an amazing experience!
Prof. Milanese is one of the best professors at BU! I took Global Documentary. As long as you do your work, you are guaranteed a B and if you do the extra credit, you can get an easy A+. Always willing to help and her classes are so interesting that you want to go every time. You're graded on a two papers, a TED talk, and couple mini assignments.
Prof. Milanese is absolutely wonderful. Global Documentary was super interesting and we had two papers and a ted talk as our projects. She is very caring and makes sure that every student feels comfortable in her class or talking to her. Contract grading guarantees every student a B+ and with extra credit, it can be raised. Very low-stress class.
Global Documentary is incredible! light reading, mainly watching films. there is a grading contract with a guaranteed B+ if you do all the assignments & some extra projects to get an A. she wants to see her students succeed & is intelligent, passionate, & down to earth. you will adore her & her class!
global doc has got to be the best wr120 class. Milanese is super caring and understanding, and really just wants everyone to succeed. grading is very clear, and since you only have 3 major assignments it really helps take the stress out of writing and help you improve. class material is also SUPER interesting as well.
Prof. Milanese was great! I took WR120 Global Documentary and it was probably my favourite class. There is a lot of work though, pretty much a mini-assignment due every 1-2 classes, but I always looked forward to going to class. The rubric is very clear and as long as you meet the criteria, it's a guaranteed B+ and you can do extra credit for an A.
She is the best professor for Wr150, although she uses grading contracts. But it is moderately easy to meet the criteria for grading contracts. Just do what she called "community service (form a writing group, exchange drafts with your peers, etc.)." SHE IS AWESOME! The class is fun and engaging.
She was absolutely incredible and made going to class exciting. Do your homework on time and build a relationship with your peers for an even better experience.
SWEETEST professor I've ever had at BU. Gives you a B for doing the bare minimum, really encourages you to do a little extra work to get an A. She got my op-ed published (I'm not a strong writer). She truly encourages each and every student and gets to know them on a personal level. Made going to class worth it and interesting! TAKE HER CLASS!! :)
Professor Milanese makes an A achievable for all. She cares for every single student and tries her best to encourage taking risks. She's the definition of a great professor and I've had so much fun in her class. Her essays and assignments are all super easy and it's easy to do well. If you're looking for the best WR15x professor, she is THE ONE!
Best writing professor ever!!!! Take her for any writing requirement class. She is one of the professors who actually cares about students and their personal lives. She gave good feedback and encouraged everyone to participate in class. She is AMAZING! I want her to be an Econ professor so that I can continue to take her classes in the future.
One of the best professors at BU. She knows everyone's names after the first week and always wants to learn more about their lives. She provides a safe and comfortable environment. I recommend her 120 class to COM students...or at least those who find the subject interesting. I found myself uninterested at times, but she still made it enjoyable!
Marisa's great, she's so nice and chill, and her feedback really helped me realize my strengths/weaknesses and improve my writing. I feel like its totally possible to succeed in this class regardless of how good your writing is. The grading contract was a little annoying but gives you lots of options for getting your grade up.
Hands down, the best English class I ever taken. She really cares about every single students, and will go far and beyond to make sure everyone is succeeding. The "community credit" may sound dumb, but it truly helped me transition into BU a lot smoother, and learn more about both BU and Boston
Prof. Milanese is one of the sweetest professors I had at BU. She established a genuine connection with every student and made sure that everyone felt seen, which is especially important in a class like public speaking that can be intimidating for many people. The course was a lot of fun, just make sure to stay on top of assignment deadlines!
Very chill and fun professor! Wrote rec letters for me too. Very helpful too when it comes to class assignments. I loveeee Marisa
Profesor Milanese is genuinely the sweetest ever. Her class, "Attention, Please!" was so much fun, and she found ways to make the class engaging even when the content wasn't as fun as the rest of the course. She cares so much about each and every one of her students, and really takes the time to meet with us individually! Highly recommend!!!
