Online class was terrible. No Instruction combined with difficult material. I'd advise against this one.
Dr Barth needs to learn to proofread her work. The course work consisted of worksheets, you do not get a grade for doing these, the worksheets are to help you understand the material. Several of the answers were wrong, even on the exams some of the answers were incorrect. Many times the instructor was late in putting up the assignments for us.
This was a fairly hard class, especially online. Be prepared to devote alot of time to it. Dr. Barth is very helpful though and will respond quickly to questions emailed with very detailed answeres. She's a very smart lady and a great teacher, but it's tough material.
It's an online class so obviously there's not much teaching involved. But she's pretty clear in the videos, and the material is not too challenging. She's VERY helpful if you have any questions.
I am horrible at chemistry so I was terrified to take the course but following her guidelines landed me an A. Since this is a difficult course and is online, do prepare to devote a lot of time taking this course.I had two jobs while taking it and still well but left me with very little free time to enjoy summer.
I took CH 121,122,123 accelerated summer series. I needed 8+hrs/day of studying to keep up. W/ the amount of material,self-study,very easy to get behind or confused.Anytime I emailed Dr. Barth w/ ?s she responded same-day w/ TONS of info & great explanations.Very friendly. If u do better on final than midterm, midterm score replaced w/ final %score
Hardworking Professor with compassion. The course work is plentiful and both labs and homework take hours. However, material is consistent with text and overall I was confident and did well on exams. Need more Professors like this in the math department.
Very clear lectures. She explains the concepts so that they make sense.
Dr.Barth was a great professor, she was passionate about chemistry. Overall great class and I wish she taught 232 and 233.
Her reviews are good. She makes sure you know what's going to be covered on the exam. Even the final.
Barth is really helpful and super nice. Her class was pretty similar to the one on campus in terms of grading, which was very fair and gave lots of wriggle room. Notecards allowed on exams, good practice exams and practice problems. Great professor!
Marita is a really good teacher. She makes helpful instructional videos and made the material so much easier to understand. She keeps you up to date with everything, and is well organized. I was really impressed with her teaching over distance education.
Some teachers are just really well organized and it makes the biggest difference for loaded subject matter. She also apparently has an army of teacher aides who help respond to questions thoughtfully. She gives weekly announcements letting you know where you should be in the material and lets you know the class average on the exams.
has powerpoints with fill-in lines which you can print out- very helpful. these powerpoints from her lecture are detailled and easy to understand that you don't have to read the book. she's really nice so don't hestitate to ask any questions- people do their hw during her office hours. don't need the book unless you actually want to read it.
Dr. Barth was always available with feedback and helpful suggestions. I particularly appreciated her understanding of busy schedules and administering an efficient course. She did a great job of fostering class participation and engagement between students. TAs were available and lab checks really boosted my grades & understanding. Thumbs up!
Took this class online her instructional videos and practice tests provided were very helpful. She was always available to answer questions in the discussion board, but you had to ask for the help. I took 122 and 122 with her and will be taking 123 online with her. It's a lot of work and reading. the tests are hard because they differ from the HW.
She is very accommodating if something unexpected happens and is very clear as to what she expects. Provides lots of study material which is helpful since chemistry is hard for most. The lectures she had posted were not all hers but all were helpful.
Dr. Barth is an awesome teacher. She answers email really fast. She makes everything so organized that makes it easy to follow the course. Really recommend you to take her.
(Online class) Homework and readings are not short but can be done. If you read and master the homework, tests will be a breeze. Gives fantastic feedback and breaks it down so everyone can understand chemistry. Labs are fun, and if finished before the due date, you can get feedback and correct your mistakes. Plan on taking her for all my chems!
Marita Barth is an excellent chemistry professor; she clearly explains complex concepts by breaking them into their fundamental components and works with you to thoroughly understand their connections. Unlike other OSU courses, Dr. Barth assigns a doable amount of homework and grades fairly. Her responses are prompt and I love her videos!
I've taken both 121 & 122 from professor barth and I've rarely had a teacher so involved and helpful. This class is hard and if you don't put the work in you won't pass, but it's fair and the help is there. Be prepared to work, but you couldn't ask for a much better professor
Very difficult material to cover. She does a great job at helping, answering questions, posting video lectures and having tutoring available. Makes it clear she wants her students to succeed. Doesn't take away from the material being HARD and the tests are NO cake-walk, even if there is a note card or formulas provided!
Tough class, but she made it easier by giving good feedback in a timely manner. Expect to spend a lot of time doing homework. If you do the homework and the labs, then the midterm and final will seem easy for you. Time management is important if you are taking this class online.
Took online, course work is done very well by Prof Barth, tests are proctored/timed. Not for slow test takers or have problems retaining a lot of info. It is a very test heavy class, not a lot of tests, but lots of points towards the few tests. Had a an A up to the final, after the final, my average was a D.
Dr. Barth is very helpful when asked for clarification. Her lectures are easy to listen to, and the homework is graded on a "did you do it?" basis. She makes chemistry simple!
Chemistry is by far one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. With that being said Dr. Barth makes it bearable. She provides endless resources and grades on a slight curve. If you put the time in (which is a lot) you will pass the class. Prepare for a lot of practice to fully understand the class.
I took her online class and the lectures were great and she explained everything very well. The subject was difficult but I feel she allowed for success with her teaching clarity.
I took Dr. Barth for both CH 122 and CH 123 and she is truly a wonderful professor. She responds to emails quickly, gives great feedback on the discussion boards (on which she is very involved!), and she is a fair grader. If you watch her videos, do the worksheets, and the midterm/final practices, you will do great.
I took CH 121 online through eCampus with Dr. Barth. This is a 5 credit class (which is a lot...) She said to expect 15 hours of work per week and was right. If you work full time (or more) like I do, prepare to do nothing but homework in your spare time. This is very mentally draining and I DO NOT recommend it. Both textbook and codes are used.
I could not have passed this class without Professor Barth's cheerful instance that students can ask ANY question ALL the time. Also, at the beginning when I felt like quitting, she sent me a long supportive email. It gave me the courage to try, and I passed the class!! I will HIGHLY RECOMMEND Professor Barth to anyone taking Chemistry.
I had Dr. Barth for CH 121, 122, and 123. She is strict but fair and really cares about students learning. The videos she created to supplement her class were the difference between a pass and a fail (literally... I had to retake CH121 and the next attempt she had the videos and they REALLY helped). Very tough topic for non-math people.
Great professor. Took the class online & though it was challenging I look forward to taking Chem 2 with her next quarter. The class was taught w/another professor, & the videos they post are super helpful. There's a good amount of reading, & the tests aren't easy, but if you do the reading, homework, & study you'll be fine. Give's great feedback.
This professor was available for help at all times. Her responses were concise and prompt.
ASK QUESTIONS! Dr. Barth and her TAs are tirelessly helpful and very responsive. Dr. Barth is serious about chemistry, but she has a sense of humor too, and she really wants her students to understand the material. The virtual labs are interesting: be prepared to spend some time on them. In general, ask for help before you get overwhelmed!
Dr. Marita Barth is my favorite teacher at OSU so far. She is tough but fair. Is understanding and helpful. This class is a lot of work and you must study for it.
Taken online* CH 121 had very little lectures so it was very difficult to teach myself. CH 122 is a "little easier" in that there are SO MANY videos to watch. This helps immensely. Online feedback sometimes takes an annoyingly long time to get a response. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. She offers a "suggested timeline" this is no joke. Follow it!!
Get ready to WORK! Took this class online, hoping that there would be an abundance of lecture materials to reinforce learning, to compensate for the class being online. There were only a few short videos each week. While the professor may be great, the lack of depth of teaching was disappointing. The online labs left much to be desired also.
Marita was a great professor. She actively participated in the online discussions and provided great feedback throughout the course. I noticed that we were quizzed on topics that were necessarily in any of her recorded "pencasts" which led me to feel that material may have been missing. I recommend reading the book! Fair grader and cares for class.
For starters, I have been out of chemistry for 2 years before finally coming back to finish the last class in the series. I was very nervous to take chemistry online as I felt as If I would not have enough resources to succeed. I was WRONG. Dr. Barth is an amazing professor as is very helping. She provides great lecture videos and worksheets.
I've had a rough relationship with chemistry at OSU, thus I have been taught by every teacher that teaches the 100 series. Out of everyone Barth is the BEST. She is SO thorough in her videos and makes sure the class understands the concepts inside and out. Watch every video , do every worksheet, do the exam study guides and you will pass :).
She provides so many materials that are extremely helpful. Every week she provided us with an optional worksheet and answers. Before our midterm and final she made us mock tests to take. Everything we read about in the free textbook was matched with an instructional video. I definitely recommend having her as a professor.
Marita is really helpful and understanding. Her study guides are great, and she genuinely cares about her students success.
This was an online class, so professor accessibility and feedback is critical when its a tough subject matter. I took all 3 Chem classes with Dr. Barth, and while I'm not a chem major, I would take another course with her in a heartbeat. She was always available to answer questions quickly and thoroughly, and all classwork was great prep for exams.
If you score higher on the final, she will drop your midterm grade. Lots of homework, but she uses Knewton Alta for the homework so it is very informative. I did not use the textbook because it only confused me.
She is really responsive, thorough with her explanations and VERY fair. There's lots of work, but it's easy to keep up. If you do the work you will do well.
I busted my rear in this class all quarter and had 90% up until the midterm. The midterm was so heavily weighted, and the questions on the midterm seemed rewritten and confusing, my overall grade dropped down to a 60%. Super frustrating. :( Test matter more than anything else. Quest/Concerns aren't responded to until the next day most of the time.
Hard course the mid term/final are 55% of your grade. So if you struggle with tests don't take her class. Knewton for homework was good but there is a great deal of homework that doesn't count enough for the effort being put in. Labs are confusing don't seem to match the materials. Had an A, did ALL homework, labs got 100% and test tanked final.
I actually posted to the professor mulilple times to get dirction and aid, i was never given a specific responce. MY GPA for my associates is 3.4. This professor gave me an F. Her tests DO NOT coinsided with reviews, I MEAN That! The review she gives is 100% usless, none of those questions or related qustions will be on the test.
She is very intelligent. Test are done in person. 55% of your grade depends on a Midterm and a Final. I graduated with my associates on the honor roll, I got a D in this class. Be warned, if you are not GREAT in math, this class will kill you.
I hadn't taken a Chemistry course in 12 years & managed to make an A in every online course this Professor taught/oversaw. The study guides provided give clear, concise plans for approaching the course work. Follow them, and you'll be rewarded. Great feedback. Clear lecturer. Courses are test/homework heavy.
Good, responsive professor... works with students and is very caring. If you care for your own success, she will too.
Ive taken chem 123 and 122 in class but the in class lectures were awful and the class was designed poorly. I decided to switch to online and I feel like Im actually learning and its wonderful and I love the way Marita has designed the course! Its fair and you actually learn :)
I was terrified to take this class because I'm bad with math but I actually ended up enjoying it because of the professor. All of her material is organized, thorough, and very clear. It's not an easy class and you have to do the work to pass. But she's a fair grader and will do anything to help you succeed. She really cares about her students!
Just a tip for success on exams: Don't do the study guides and don't spend too much time reading the book. Do ALL of the optional practice questions because her exams don't get much harder than those. On the quizzes make sure you know how to arrive at the answers if you get them wrong. Do the homework. It's more about solving problems than anything
Dr. B is AMAZING! She offers extra credit every week, which honestly isn't really necessary to get a good grade if you put forth any effort at all. She makes things very accessible with practice worksheets, lecture videos, and relevant homework. The free textbook covers the material, but honestly her lectures and homework do a better job.
Dr. Barth is amazing! I've taken her for CH 121, 122, and 123. She and her co-professors put so much effort into their teaching and really want their students to succeed. Her courses are well organized, a free online textbook is used and your software subscription rolls over into future CH classes. Extremely helpful videos and extra credit offered.
Very very test heavy! If you fail your midterm it is almost impossible to pass the final.
Dr. Barth is hands-down the most kind professor I have ever had. Chemistry is a challenging course, but she provides more support and assistance than any professor that I have ever had. The midterm grade is dropped if you do better on the final. She allows a one-sided notecard on exams. Easy A if you just complete hw and labs and put some effort in
She is an excellent teacher and the video lectures are AMAZING. I have had her for two chemistry classes and I wish I could have her for all my chem classes. Highly recommend her if you have the option. Usually 6-10 extra credit assignments too. Also gives practice midterm and final to use as a study guide.
I really liked this professor. She provided students with a clear outline of the course ahead of time, ample resources for reviewing material, and answered questions within a reasonable time frame.
Nice but... Warning: online class is 75% learning by reading textbook, 20% Kahn Academy videos, 5% her videos. No lectures & we learn entirely from the textbook. New topic daily so if u get behind, no way to catch up. My cumulative GPA was 4.0 the past 2 years as a bio major. Hardest class I ever took! I changed my major after taking her class.
I have a 3.8 GPA and I was excited to learn about chemistry before taking this class. Now not so much. This has been hands down the worst educational experience of my adult life. the is all quantity here and little quality. An avalanche of technical jargon and a barrage of indecipherable homework are not conducive to learning. Garbage western Edu.
This is a waist of time. Do not take this class if you funding your own education as you you need to take it again with an affective educator.
If you like paying for services not rendered than this is the class for you. You will enjoy shelling out thousands of dollars to a school so that you can self teach from the text book. This professor may be a lot of things but and educator is not one of them.
Ok so as a professor I think she is great, in the video lectures we have to watch she is very clear and easy to understand. HOWEVER the course layout as an e-campus learner is the worst thing I have ever experienced. You are left ENTIRELY on your own to learn a very hard topic, paying all this money to just read a textbook is disgusting!
As others have stated if you don't like paying for a class that is self taught than stay away from this professor. Textbook is useless. Every test I've done so far has been horrible due to studying what is recommended and on test day none of the questions are relevant to what I studied for. Ill be happy if I can make a C- out of this class.
Chemistry is a challenging course, no matter the professor. I was very nervous to take it but the format of the class makes it completely doable. Instead of 1 or 2 exams, there are 5 so only 2 weeks of material at a time. The class does require a lot of time! I spent 15 hours (at least) a week for this class. I would take Prof Barth again!
I was very nervous going back into Chemistry as I hadn't taken it since high school. Dr. Barth did a fantastic job putting together a course where you can succeed if you're willing to do the work. There are a lot of assignments to complete, but it helps to grasp the subject. Lots of extra credit available and she's always around to help.
I'm not one for writing reviews, but I made an account to post this. The 1 star reviews are correct. The textbook is confusing jargon, videos are outdated and irrelevant, discussion posts are useless. I took the 4 week accelerated version of this class and it is the worst academic experience of my life. Be prepared for midnight homework everyday.
Dr. Barth is an amazing professor. She truly cares about the student and is very quick to reply to emails.
not an educator.
When it comes to Gen Chem it doesn't get better than Professor Barth. Absolute loved taking her classes, she makes chemistry approachable! Would highly recommend. A very caring and helpful teacher as well-- always responds quickly.
This course has a large workload, and the labs are typically unrelated to the content. I did not use the textbook that I paid for and ended up teaching myself through tutors. I think OSU needs to evaluate their curriculum and the way it is handed out.
I thought this was a wonderful course and Marita was an excellent professor. All expectations and due dates were clearly defined. The homework provided multiple chances to be correct and was a great tool for practicing content. Also, you were tested based on knowledge of content, not anything crazy. I would definitely take Professor Barth again.
Dr. Barth was wonderful in my chem class. I did not reach out to her much, but when I did she responded very quickly. She also responded quickly to questions on the general help board and was also willing to explain something further if needed. She was very helpful and it truly felt like she wanted us to succeed.
Best chem professor I have had so far, clear grading and expectations. She also has good prerecorded videos that are easy to follow. If you have any questions it's fairly quick to get a response in the forum.
By far the best chemistry teacher I've ever had. All professors that teach online should take notes from Professor Barth. I am not a math or chemistry person, I failed the one time I took it. But I always get As with her.
The course is very organized, and if you put in effort, you can get a good grade in this class. It is definitely more than 5 hours a week though. I would prepare to spend at least 2 hours per weekday working on this class. There are 5 exams throughout the term, all remotely proctored through Proctorio.
Barth was super understanding with late work and gave plenty of opportunities for extra credit. As long as you keep up on the work, you'll be fine. Chem is scary, but Barth makes it as painless as possible. I didn't even use the textbook, but I know some people did. Sometimes I needed supplemental lectures from YouTube tutors.
Only spoke twice, but was very kind and understanding when I had struggles. Homework has multiple attempts, labs are graded (mostly) on participation, weekly quizzes, biweekly assessments (questions pulled directly from quizzes with new numbers, one notecard allowed). Easy to prepare for assessments, no midterm/final. Easy A if you put in effort.
Taking Chem with Dr Barth was amazing. She's a caring teacher, that cared a lot about student success. She provided material that made understanding Chem easier.
Professor Barth was clear from the start that she was present if you simply reached out in an ideal amount of time. She gave extra credit where even 1 point could make an impact, & overall found ways to make the class easier within her capabilities. She mentioned when things were tough & gave the encouragement to keep moving forward.
I am part of eCampus. Textbook was a free eBook. I had some difficult life events and Dr. Barth was very kind and understanding. There are study guides that are great to follow as you read the eBook. Lecture videos and homework were helpful. It's a 5 credit hour class and the amount of work reflects that. Stay organized and you'll do well.
Barth is a fantastic professor. She does practice problems in her lectures that look exactly like the homework and test questions. The bar sounds low, but not many professors do that! She's kind when you might need an extension and helpful when you ask for help! I would take her classes no matter the topic!
Barth is the best prof I've had at OSU. Everything is clearly stated and due at the same time every week. The lectures include the same problems that are in the homework, quizzes, and tests. This is not a self-taught online class, as other reviews say. Barth is the most attentive and helpful eCampus prof and ACTUALLY wants to help you succeed.
Dr. Barth absolutely lives up to all of her excellent ratings! She makes chemistry very straightforward, and the proctored unit assessments are exactly like the example problems. You can tell that she is passionate about teaching; she even incorporates extra credit and "just for fun" discussions to connect with classmates. Highly recommend!
Best professor at OSU so far! Very caring and offers one extension to be used no matter what. Learning was very doable and exams are easy to study for. Lots of extra credit opportunities and help available. The class was organized and concise and I loved that. She made chemistry very passable and her students are all very happy. Would take again!
Dr. Barth is absolutely fantastic. She is very responsive, provide good feedback and are quick to answer any questions. The lectures are recorded and easy to understand. There is reading, homework and a quiz weekly with 5 unit assessments (one dropped). Material isn't the easiest but she made it so much easier. Textbook is free and digital.
I have taken 3 classes with Professor Barth and would take more if I needed them for my major. She is patient and understanding with students, and reaches out personally when you do well on something. Chem does NOT come easy to me, but her lectures great, and informative. Great professor overall, especially if you struggle with the sciences.
Martia is incredibly willing to work with students and their unique situations. She was willing to open 2 exams early for me to accommodate my schedule and she always responds to emails in a timely matter. She truly cares about the success of her students and offers tons of extra credit opportunities.
I really enjoyed this class though I do not particularly enjoy chemistry. Dr. Barth makes the concepts easier to understand, and she and the class setup is extremely flexible. Watching the lectures helps you to understand the homework well. As long as you watch lectures, practice problems, and study, you will do great!
if you're like me and know absolutely nothing about chemistry, this class will be difficult. There are many lectures/ slides to watch and the homework and online labs are extremely tedious. however, Dr. Barth is still an incredible professor in the way that she is very quick to reply to the Q&A and she is always more than happy to help how she can.
I enjoyed taking Prof. Barth's class, it's pretty lecture vid and homework heavy but for the most part, shouldn't be too bad as long as you do the work and utilize your resources, talk to her if you have any problems, she's always been awesome when I reached out. Beware of labs, and try to access the Discord, it's helped me.
Honestly, I love science. I tend to be more science/math oriented, so I was REALLY excited to take this class. Be warned: I had to look up videos on how to do the material the entire semester, so you'll do a lot of outside research. She only grades lab, hw, and quizzes/tests, so it's hard to make up if you bomb something. Good luck.
Absolutely loved Dr. Barth, she is very quick to respond, with help, trouble shooting or needing more time on assignments. Her videos were great, emails and Q/A discussion boards had easy understand answers. Assessments were trickier than homework- the extra credit will help you. Highly recommended professor
I failed my first ever chemistry class back in high school. I worried about this class, but the course is organized and explained so well that I managed to get an A! I did have to put 20 hours one week into studying for harder concepts, though. She is also respected among other students I've talked to about this class.
The course material was as easy as chemistry can be. The class is very textbook heavy and the homeworks are based on that long with the lecture videos. But SO MANY extra credit opportunities! I highly recommend. I had an A all throughout. Any questions I had, I received an email response quickly, or through the discussion boards. TAKE THE CLASS!
I'm ecampus FYI. I took her class for ch 121 and was super nervous. I never took chem in HS so this was my first class. She responded quickly and was super nice. For me, the tests and quizzes were challenging but I took advantage of the free tutoring. Also there's plenty of extra credit but you definitely have to put the work into this class.
I was very nervous about taking chemistry. At times the content was challenging because chemistry is challenging, but the instructions were clear and there were only 15 question assessments every two weeks, no large midterm or final exams, plus lots of Ex credit. If you are worried about taking chem, take with Dr. Barth! She was excellent!
Great professor! CH121 is difficult but she provides a lot of extra credit opportunities. During quantum week she did an extra discussion board post for everyone's pet pictures, it was great. There were quizzes every week but the big tests were every two weeks over the material covered in that period of time.
Watch the lectures and you will thrive. She is an amazing professor and is willing to help. I wish I had her in OChem.
This is a perfect intro. course for those who are nervous about taking a chem course. As long as you make time to practice the unit problems/quizzes Chem 121 is easy. There's even extra credit to take advantage of. Additionally, Martia is incredibly sweet and understanding. Whenever I had an issue she was always willing to work with me.
a few short videos weekly, read from a textbook (none of the content provided helped me to understand the 50+ content heavy, variable hw questions weekly). Ppl have posted their concerns on canvas- her response- DB for everyone to share pictures of their pets. Im not learning any of the material needed for my sequential future chemistry classes.
Professor Barth was a wonderful teacher and was always willing to help me when I was stuck. She responds to emails quickly and gave very valuable feedback. Each week, there are videos, short chapters to read, a homework assignment, a quiz, and a lab assignment. These assignments were simple, informative, and not overwhelming. Highly recommend!
Chem 121 with Professor Barth can be challenging, but she makes it manageable with plenty of extra credit and helpful resources like unstuck AI. Stay on top of the weekly quizzes and you'll do great. Definitely take this class if you need an intro chem credit.
Marita was a very caring instructor, I had a lot of apprehension starting the chemistry series but her instruction style put me at ease. Around Week 6 I started to feel overwhelmed with courseload so I missed an important quiz. She emailed me to check in if everything was ok, &reminded that the course is set up for lowest test scores to be dropped.
Dr. Barth is an amazing instructor! She was very responsive to students and if she didn't respond, one of the other teachers would. Assignments were a decent enough load, and I loved that everything had the same due date! I love the unit assessments (proctored) more than having midterms and finals. It helped my testing anxiety a lot!
Barth wasn't the worst but if possible I would definitely recommend taking another professor. She was accessible outside of class and was accommodating but her lectures were often difficult to understand and although she responded quickly she didn't offer much help in discussion boards or private emails.
Im back again with another class ! Literally the best professor I have ever had, I wish she could teach at the vet school. She has amazing lectures, simplifies scary math so well! The homework can be lengthy but perfectly prepares us for the tests. Also, very fair grading criteria! Love Dr.Barth!
The class wasn't the hardest class but it was a struggle. You need to read a lot from the textbook and follow her lecture videos and there tend to be quite a few videos. The lectures were sometimes confusing along with her labs. I would choose a different professor next time.
Dr. Barth is an excellent and caring professor. The text can be difficult to follow along with, so I learned that watching Dr. Barth's lectures first helps significantly. She breaks down the topics in easy-to-understand bits of information. I feel incredibly confident because of her and understand concepts much better. Not an overwhelming workload.
She was a very caring professor! I was so nervous coming into the Chem series of courses, but she quickly changed that. Dr. Barth provides a clear understanding of what to expect on the exam content, is highly responsive, and is very kind in a ya'll-can-do-this fashion. Absolutely would take again.
I actually enjoyed the class. I did have difficulty with the online lab portion sometimes, but the homework was reasonable. Some of the equations in the homework don't want to work properly.
