Dan is a good teacher. His first midterm was extremely easy. His second midterm however was kinda ridiculous, it asked very particular questions. He gives a ton of hints and essentially free marks so I recommend going to lecture.
Dan is a ton of fun and makes class enjoyable to attend. His exams are relatively easy and has thorough reviews a week prior to each. He enjoys making the class laugh. He has 2 random pop quizzes for easy marks so be weary. I highly recommend this class for a GPA booster but also for the level of interesting material as a non major.
Easy class to get a good grade. Even though you'll carry a C throughout the entire semester, you'll end up with an A- because he'll curve the marks. Can't understand a word the man says, but he basically GIVES you marks at the end of the semester.
Rocks for jocks is literally that. I learned nothing in this class, and Georgescu is not the best prof. He gets very off topic, but he's definitely a character. I don't know how I passed, I literally learned nothing that was on the exams. Paying attention in lectures won't help you. Avoid this professor.
Great teacher, worked super hard to get very clear mineral pictures! Makes class enjoyable to go to cause he throws in funny stories and jokes. He makes sure that he is clear on telling the class about topics that are most important and what topics are not. He also throws in short breaks if he notices to class is getting bored.
Amazing professor, don't join this class just because he makes it easy but because he is super interesting. He tries very hard to keep the students happy and I don't see how anyone can leave negative comments about such a cheerful soul. Absolutely recommend this class !!!
If you attend every lecture, you should do extremely well on his exams. During lectures, he constantly reiterates what's important to understand, and what's not. He practically gives away answers to questions during lectures and the review sessions. Georgescu is a great prof, and keeps you engaged via his cheesy-but-funny sense of humour.
took both of his geology courses for my mandatory science courses and it was fun. i liked his little jokes. i actually enjoyed going to class. one class had online tests so i HAD to buy a textbook.. the other one i just relied on slides and lectures. i obviously did better on the class i bought a textbook (B- vs. C+) requirements were reasonable.
Wonderful teacher, he really cares about what he is teaching. I highly recommend him! Just go with the flow, and don't criticize him if he makes a mistake; he is very fair. Careful when he says take a 5 minute break, he often starts earlier than he intends. Dan, if you are reading this, it was a pleasure being in your class!
Incomprehensible accent. Bad jokes. Horrible teaching method. Study all you want... you will still have NO idea about anything on the exams. Just, don't. Awful.
THE BEST PROF IN UNI. I always looked forward to his lectures cuz i learned so much and actually enjoyed the material. The first midterm was really easy so he made the sexond one a bit harder. Just attend his review lectures before every midterm and you are good to go . LOVED THE COURSE. GPA BOOSTER.
Great Professor! He's funny and enthusiastic about the material, which makes it easy to stay engaged. He is thorough and has reasonable expectations on his students to learn the material. Go to class and read the textbook - you'll do great. I loved this class and recommend this professor.
He is a good teacher. He tells you what will be on the test and if you study you can except to do well.
He genuinely cares about his students and provuded great pictures! If you don't attend lectures, read the textbook and his online notes. Tons of memorization, but I thought he made it interesting.
I would definitely go to his lectures because he gives lots of hints for the tests which are not hard! I found him to be extremely kind, clear and helpful. You can tell he loves his job and wants everyone to do well overall. The textbook is a must! He takes a lot of questions straight out of it. I would recommend this prof!
I enjoyed going to his class, he tries his best to keep the material interesting and is very concerned with the well being of his students. I reccomend his class to anyone considering taking glgy 209. he uses the textbook alot and many of the questions on the final came straight from the textbook so make sure you get it!
One of the best profs at U of C. Consistently shows enthusiasm for the material and makes lectures fun. Class is definitely worth attending for the numerous hints he gives you and his funny jokes. A+ class.
Excellent Teacher. Enthusiasm shown for the material is contagious. Very concerned for well-being of students. Would definitely take another class with this prof if available.
What a guy. His stories and jokes make what would be dry lecture material enjoyable. Lecture tests are pretty much blind memorization and are not too difficult. Almost every lab needs to be finished outside class time as there is a lot of content. Lab exams are difficult because many samples are very similar to each other.
Georgescu is a great lecturer, he keeps things very interesting. Was always available for help and genuinely wanted everyone to succeed. My only gripe is that he sold his self written textbook for $100, a textbook which had very little use in class. The textbook also isn't being bought back by the bookstore, massive waste of $100.
Dr.Georgescu, is a big beauty. His lectures are always entertaining. I have took 2 classes with him now as an option. Everything you need to know is what he says in lecture and his slides. The textbook is waaaaay to extensive compared to what he teaches. Lots of memorizing FYI; he hates dinosaurs.
MUST GO TO CLASS, but sometimes it's SO hard to understand what he is saying, gives ALL the info you need. MUST write down what he says so I suggest a laptop. But he helped us in soo many ways, the stuff is interesting, and George is the man. Highly recommended.Though you only need the text book twice, it counts for a LOT on the final
So much love for Dan! Instructors at the University of Calgary need to take a couple pointers from this guy. You must attend every class, and be sure to get down EVERYTHING he says. If you have trouble understanding him, GET HIM TO CLARIFY, he will have absolutely no problem doing so. Rather than memorizing, try to LEARN the material and have fun!
He is a very clear prof in what he expects and the course is not overly difficult. It is by no means a write off, but a decent grade is pretty attainable. That being said, he is not very helpful. He is actually quite rude, but the help is not that necessary since the course is fairly easy. Bottom line: NOT A SUPER HARD CLASS WITH SUPER RUDE PROF
This course is a waste of time with a next to useless prof. DONT BOTHER. If you need an easy A there are lots of other classes where you actually learn interesting information and don't have to deal with a rude prof.
This class is boring and does not live up to the "Rocks For Jocks" reputation. NOT an easy A with a very boring, sometimes rude, professor. If you need a GPA boost I would suggest you look elsewhere
Not helpful at all
He is good instructor. The class is required to pay attention to lectures slides and textbook!! He does review lectures 2 days before midterm. He is very funny and has nice jokes :)
This class is not OVERLY difficult, but it's like studying.. Rocks... very boring. There are much easier classes with much more interesting material IMO. I agree with some of the past posts; he can come off rude and can be very boring. I would not take this class again if given the opportunity.
Don't waste your time... Just don't...
He's a funny guy. Exams are tough. Pretty boring material. Over all decent class though.
Not a great class. If I could go back in time and not take this class I would...
This class was a lot harder than I expected. I also found the prof was pretty unhelpful and seemed quite disrespectful at times...
He is a good prof with some UNREAL pictures of minerals. So good. Anyone wanting to take this class, be prepared for the greatest pictures of minerals. Major props.
If you're not a major in geology-- do NOT take this class! it is very hard and time-consuming, especially if you didn't take GLGY 209. Also, you need a textbook! he does not cover all the material in class, some of his questions can be found in his textbook. The class is HARD, but the prof is funny and wants everyone to pass. LOTS of work however
I took GLGY 307 before I took this class, so I find 209 really easy, but this class is NOT for lazy students. This is university people. You have to study, read the textbook and come to class. Dan is an amazing professor! If you're serious about your studies, give him a shot. You won't regret it.
Not a hard class if you consistently show up. Georgescu is very passionate about his field of study, which is helpful, but he is also very pretentious. Some people had problems with his accent, but I found it to be clear for the most part. Reasonable exam questions.
good prof. must attend class as he gives out questions and things to pay more attention to. textbook is mandatory bcuz he doesnt go over everything in class. the only bad thing about him is that he talks too much, but very funny + passionate about his field. MUST go to his "exam review" classes!
I love Dr. Georgescu. He is a great prof and his lectures are very interesting. Attendance is mandatory b/c he tells you what we need to know for exams also he let's us use the textbook so it is required as well he cracks up with nice jokes. Dan is really funny and makes lectures interesting! I recommend him because he rocks :D
Dan is a funny and entertaining guy but his teaching style can be hard to follow, he just reads powerpoints every lecture and they can be hard to follow at times. The tests were generally easy and he wanted everyone to do well
Definitely not the easy A rocks for jocks class that I was expecting. Sometimes hes hard to understand and he covers a lot of material. But he will also often hint of exam questions and most questions are within the textbook.
Once again it has been another amazing semester with Dr. Georgescu! Dan is awesome! If you're a non-geology major looking for a good science credit, TAKE THIS CLASS! I'll be honest it wont be easy, but Dan is so passionate, helpful, and he makes class fun! He is one of the best professors I've had at UofC.
Really enjoyed this class! Dr. Georgescu was very clear on what material was important to know. Kind, and funny prof. His tests were very fair. This isn't a hard class as long as you study. Don't expect to be able to do nothing and get an A. The textbook is written by him so everything is relevant.
He's the best prof, he is very funny and engaging and interesting so he keeps the class fun and the material is very easy he puts all his slides online and you can just read the textbook since he wrote it all the relevant material for tests and such will be in it
He is a great prof who cares if you do well. You don't really need to go to class because absoutely everything he tested was from the textbook that HE WROTE. You need to read this before the midterms and exams, but other than that it was an easy A.
Passionate about the courses he teaches, and does his best to make class interesting. He gives a lot of hints to what is on the tests during class, so attend every class if you can. Straight forward material, but some of his questions can be left open to multiple answers. Also, the pictures he uses are awesome. 10/10 would see slides again.
Don't waste your time. If you're looking for an easy GPA boost this is not it. The prof is mediocre at best and can be quite rude to students... not helpful at all.
Has amazing pictures of minerals
Georgescu is an amazing prof! His lectures are very interesting and he makes it very clear what you have to know for the lecture exams. My only complaint would be the lack of information received before any of the labs. They are quite tricky, so I recommend getting a textbook to help you along with all of the morphology.
Lot of memorization , but he's enthusiastic and exams are pretty fair
Dan is a good guy. Very enthusiastic, enjoys what he does. Makes a very dry class semi-enjoyable. Entire course is memorization, so brace yourself. Thankfully his tests are very clear and fair. Also, pretty funny guy, he'll occasionally go on tangents and tell stories. Gives the class a fun atmosphere despite the material. Overall great professor.
Dan is a good prof. He makes an otherwise boring topic interesting with his enthusiasm and many pictures. The tests are fair, based only on information in his slides, which is all memorization. He gives a breakdown of specific topics covered on the exams which is super helpful. The lab tests can be hard, but not too bad if you study the samples.
Georgescu was an interesting prof to say the least. He tries to make lectures entertaining by cracking jokes and he has a lot of enthusiasm. The lecture slides were very unclear however, and so were the expectations for both the midterms. He basically forces you to buy the textbook he writes as well.
Good prof! Sometimes difficult to understand. But he knows the topics well and is very funny! I'm not much for Geology but if I had to take another Geology course I'd take his class again for sure. Loved the first lecture for GLGY 307, very interesting. He has exam review classes for each exam and lets the class vote on exam dates.
SUPER boring and is not the GPA booster that it apparently used to be. I found that trying to talk to him after class or during office hours was very difficult; he offered little feedback or guidance and was actually fairly rude. Still, you can do ok in the class (its an intro). In hindsight I wouldve taken a more interestingeasy intro class.
Prof is passionate and funny. You WILL need to attend lectures since his slides are sparse and he takes almost all of his exam questions from lectures. Since he wrote the textbook, it pretty much follows the notes from class, but there is some extra info in it so get it for that and for clarification. Pay attention in class and exams will be easy!
Georgescu is an awesome prof! He teaches the lectures with such passion and enthusiasm, although he tends to get off topic often. His tests are based straight off of his slides and he even tells you the breakdown of the test in terms of material covered! Lab exams are a bit more difficult, but if you take the time in the lab you should be good. A+!
Taught with enthusiasm - great prof!
Required an unedited, unreadable $100 book written by himself. Here's a prime example: "The beginning of the cold cloud rotation resulted in the dust and gases concentration cloud's central portion and in a number of concentrical rings around the center." Talked through midterm on the mic; explained nothing; worst prof ever. Teach yourself instead.
This was the first time in my life I take Geology. Lectures were very interesting. Very helpful professor . He helps student to pass with good marks. Respects students faiths and beliefs, especially the course is about evolution. The only thing that bugged me that he does not roundup the final marks. I only needed 0.30 though.
Honestly his class is the only A+ I've ever received in a class! He's super funny, and very passionate. True, you must attend lectures if you want to do well, but if you do it's an easy A. He literally breaks down the tests and tells you exactly where to find the answers prior to. Amazing Professor!
Was not helpful. Don't ask him for help, he shows little empathy for his students. Really wish I never took this class.
Georgescu is hilarious and is very clear about what you need to know for all the examinations. I would recommend this class for sure.
This class is NOT the GPA boost it used to be. Not only that, I've never dealt with a prof who could be so disrespectful to students. Really regret ever taking this class.
started off unfairly difficult then did a complete 180 after the class avg was so poor on the first midterm. afterwards gave tons of hints for the exams and exactly what he would test from the textbook. even bumped everyone's grades up before the final exam. he makes his lectures very interesting, make sure you take notes if you want all the info.
He is a genuinely nice person and always is looking out for his students. His main concern is his students success. He isn't the type of professor to throw curveballs at you and make your life extremely difficult.
Really good guy teaching a class for non-majors, so it's a breeze. Attendance is optional, although the review lectures before the exams are highly recommended as he flat out tells you what info he will test. Tests require studying but are very clear and fair, just memorization, no real thinking involved. Can be a bit long winded, but also funny
Absolutely fantastic prof, very funny and knowledge able and incredibly open to questions. Lots of memorization but exams are fair and fairly easy. He posts lectures online but would recommend going to class as some of the things he says outside of the notes are testable. Would definitely recommend to anyone even slightly interested in Geology.
one of the best professor I had, he made those horrible Latin names very interesting and easy to understand the course. I enjoyed each and every class although I have never thought I would ever enjoy geology!. I highly recommend Dr. Georgescu very clear and helpful lectures.
Dr. Georgescu gives a lot of hints during lectures on whats going to be on the midterms and finals. His lectures can sometimes be hard to follow but pay attention in the review sessions (VERY HELPFUL). Its all memorization, no tricky application questions. I wish I took more geology courses with him (i.e. Geology 209).
The class is pretty good, but I would have to say that the mineral pictures presented in class are some of the best I've ever seen
good prof. attend review lectures. I think he is secretly mr. bean.
Dan has very nice pictures of mineral specimens.
Great guy, thoroughly enjoyed his lectures.
has a great collection of mineral photos.
He made class fun. He had funny stories and showed pics of his cats. He goes over what will be on the midterms VERY thoroughly and wants you to do well. He tries to engage the students and begs them to ask questions to get some chatting going. Overall my favourite prof I've had 10/10 honestly.
Dr. G is a pure cinnamon roll
Dan is an amazing professor, he is so sweet and kind! He always tries to be funny and keep lectures interesting! His photos of rocks and minerals are also amazing! Would recommend to non-science majors and anyone looking for a GPA booster! He only gives 2 mid-terms and a final (middy's worth 25% and 30% & final worth 45%)
His mineral pictures are dope
His lectures rock
Awesome professor, not easy but not hard. Lectures are a must as he says things that are not in power points and tests on them. If you go class, write notes and study 2/3 days before it is a easy exam. Bonus is that he is really funny and he has the most amazing pictures of minerals and other geological specimens!
What a great Prof. Really wants his students to do well and gives them the tools to succeed. Is very funny and makes the lectures enjoyable. Highly recommend!
Taught a topic I was worried would be boring with enthusiasm. Very fair, assigned reasonable amounts of reading and always made sure students were well prepared for tests. He spent the entire lecture before tests reviewing the material that would be covered. Powerpoints have little info, so make sure you attend class. Excellent mineral pictures.
Really wasn't looking forward to this class but he's so enthusiastic and interesting that he made the class bearable. Mark is based on 2 midterm's and finals, if you study what he specifically tells u (everything in his slideshows, book isn't important) you can get a really high mark. Best prof to take for glgy 209. Really funny and sweet
Professor Dan made geology extremely interesting. He's refreshing and absolutely hilarious! He's so accommodating, that when I asked him to share pictures of his cat, he shared them with the whole class. He has all the students best interests at heart. There is a decent set of reading and learning to get through the tests but it's engaging.
This is no longer "Rocks for Jocks." If you're looking for an easy A there are way more out there. Dr. Dan can come off rude and is pretty unaccessible- he really made my experience in this class unpleasant TBH (kind of demeaning to some students). Maybe the class would be better with another prof. But IMO don't waste your time.
Seriously have no idea why this guy gets any good reviews. Tough class and has no respect for the students. Clearly just teaching this course as a prof requirement. Brutal.
Tough to understand. Super unclear on expectations. Don't expect to get an A with no work. You'll learn more from the text than from him.
If you are looking for an easy A, look elsewhere! They have made some serious changes to the course since it was rock for jocks. I found the course very dry and very boring. Lots of interesting and easy science options out there; don't waste your time with this one.
He taught me '307 - Geological History of Life', which wasn't really an easy subject. Full of species, their Latin names, the periods in which they're found, & some basic anatomy. He tries 2 help u get a good grade. The final was 50% taken straight from the previous midterms, & 50% from the last 1/3? of the semester; got one of my few As from him.
Amazing prof, and very well educated in his field. If you attend lectures he will always be clear on what is on the exams. Would recommend for sure !!!
He has an accent that is difficult to understand. He is also a little bit rude to students in class which made me scared to ask questions. He sent out practice questions and used those on the midterms which was nice, but you have to buy a very new (and expensive) textbook and there are not a lot of used copies floating around..
His passion for geology, zest for life, quirky sense of humor, compassion, and excellent teaching skills made me excited to come to class to learn. Textbook helped clarify things. Memorize and study for the exams- wording is tricky and you need to know the material to get an A. He gives exam question hints and highlights what is important to know.
Must work hard for your midterm marks as you get mostly tested on slides as well as some stuff he says verbally. His accent is brutal and you need to understand what he says in order to get an A. I tried asking him a question if a concept will be on a test and he gave such a brutal and disrespectful response. Beware final is brutal!! Expect curve!!
Amazing!!!
Dr. Georgescu is a funny prof who really cares about his students and is very passionate about geology. While it's true that the course is no longer "Rocks for Jocks", you will get an A if you work for it. If you attend lectures, take solid notes, and don't miss out on his review classes, you'll do very well in his course. Would recommend.
Prof. Dan is amazing! Go to class and take good notes. Study those notes, 1 day before the exam and you will get an A+. DO NOT SKIP Review lectures !! Even if you have to skip some classes, don't skip the Review classes. Textbook was useless. Wasted my money. However don't depend on lecture slides. You need to take your own notes in class.
Georgescu is really funny and passionate about geology. You can most definitely go off the textbook for the entire course, just pay attention to which topics he puts on the slides as your guide. Never went to class and still aced the course.
Barely went to class, but from the classes I DID go to, I thought the class content was delivered REALLY WELL. Either read alot of the textbook, or just go to class and textbook isn't needed. Dan is SO PASSIONATE about GEOLOGY and he's just an awesome guy. Managed to go to the final review sessions and come in clutch with a decent overall grade. 3
HE IS THE MAN THE LEGEND THE MITH !!!!!!!!!!!! He wants every student to get a good grade in this class. Go to class and follow up with the Power point slides and you are laughing !! I got a A in this class and I had a lot of fun with him. He is the man.
Super funny guy! GAVE A 10 MINUTE LECTURE ON HIS CATS ONE TIME. Great class to take for random option.
Professor Georgescu is a really genuine guy and loves what he teaches. He has a sort of endearing sense of humor that grows on you and makes the lectures bearable when the content gets dry. This is a pretty easy course, but you can definitely fall behind if you don't keep up to date or if you skip. Good GPA booster and a fun class to attend.
Dan is a great prof and the lectures are very interesting. You can mostly go off the slides, but definitely go to the review lectures as he tells you what content is important. Sometimes he tests off of what he says in class. He also gave away a ton of freebie marks.
It was actually ROCKS FOR JOCKS in 2014 when I took it!! Wrote his own book for the course.
Georgescu was an amazing prof, would highly recommend! When he found out that the bookstore raised the price of his textbook, he boycotted it for the semester and we were only tested from his powerpoints! In addition, he gives so many bonus marks on the exams. The exams are fair, you have to study but he is clear with what is going to be tested on!
He's great at giving lectures but lots of attention needs to be given to small details and clips you watch in class. Exams are very oriented around content that is briefly covered in class, and not usually in the textbook.
Great professor overall. One of the most passionate lecturers that I have encountered in university thus far. This course is no longer rocks for jocks - you must put in effort and go to class, but with a decent level of effort an A is easily attainable. YOU NEED TO GO TO CLASS TO DO WELL. 40% of exams was slides and the remainder was from lecture.
Would highly recommend for a science option. The class was straightforward but required careful memorization of slides and lectures. If you put in the effort it's an easy A. Gave a weighted 5% bonus after the second midterm and yet some are still whining that he didn't curve the final haha.
Interesting and engaging professor - entertaining lectures. Would recommend for any science option.
I can't believe the reviews below me, Dr. Dan must be rating himself three times a day everyday. This class wasn't BRUTAL. Not a clear communicator. And certainly not an easy A like everyone thinks. Guy was rude to his students and you learn exclusively from the textbook. Would NEVER reccomend. Check out other GPA boosters and SAVE YOURSELF!
Very easy GPA booster class, he said the final was hard but it was really easy. If you think this class is hard you should really just quit school....
Dr. Georgescu was the highlight of my semester. He is clearly passionate about the field, but understands the point of the course and the needs of the students. He has a great sense of humour and lots of stories. Showing up at class is important, though, and paying attention to details is required. For a science option, GLGY 209 can't be beat.
Dr. Dan is extremely rude to students and doesn't even show up for office hours. This class does not seem like a priority and that is reflected in how boring the material and lectures are! The tests were not as easy as most 'GPA Boosters', but you can get through it (if you can stay awake studying). There are easier classes with more involved profs
This class is atrocious. Boring content. Poorly presented. Unhelpful and unclear prof. There are much better classes, for the money... don't waste your time here.
Georgescu was good. Went off topic a lot in his lectures, and i would space out so many times. Powerpoint's could use more clarity. He posted them all online so really no need to go to lectures. Exams are fair, just have to study for them. Other than that, an easy mark if you put in some studying.
Super boring. Tough to understand at times. You learn more from the text than you do from him- the class is tougher than most junior options IMO. I would not reccomend this course unless it's a last resort.
Nothing good to say about this class- tough tests, boring lectures, unhelpful prof who is hard to understand.
worst prof. Lectures are useless, notes are illegible, exams have nothing to do with anything, just a terrible professor. Avoid this like the plague or you will regret it within the first month.
Georgescu is really passionate about geology and science in general. He can go off topic during lectures but he always tells you what will be on the test and what won't be. Going to class is very important as there is some things he says during lectures that aren't in the notes. If you put in the work the class is an easy A.
I don't get why there are bunch of negative ratings, probably little salty kiddos didn't attend class and expected an A+, lol you guys deserve it. This class is easy and the prof is funny, the notes are so helpful that I only used notes to study the exam. I got an A- and I wasn't even trying. :)) This is easier than middle school.
Class is not THAT bad. You can figure out the content (it's not easier than middle school though). Dr. Dan is not that good though. I could see how some people don't like him since he can come off pretty rude to his students and is often not around during office hours. His notes are all over the place and he tends to ramble too...
AVOID this class like the plague. This is the worst class I've ever taken. Georgescu is absolutely terrible. 0/10 DO NOT RECCOMEND
Dan was a super nice guy and man did he have some jokes. we weren't required to get a textbook because of a mix up, knows what hes talking about but kind of rambles off topic sometimes but class was easy. Went over midterm answers after grading and the final was 40 questions from the first 2 midterms and i believe 40 more from the last section.
Easy mark if you put the effort in. Nice prof, can come off as rude, but thats just his humour. He's funny. Gets off topic a lot. Tests were easy enough if you kust reviewed your notes and did some memorizing.
So funny!!! Lectures were great, he is very entertaining. He's extremely passionate about his class and really loves to teach. Best part was the end of the course, where he showed us pictures of a wax museum tour he went on with his wife. Great guy.
Pretty good, hes funny and passionate about foraminifera and radiolarians lol, usually pretty entertaining but some topics are just boring and not really his fault. Sometimes hard to understand but he tries to clear it up if you ask, wont say beach though lol. Makure to read the textbook because he will definitely question you it during the exams.
Dr. Georgescu is absolutely hilarious! I love going to his lectures because I could listen to him talk all day. He is incredibly passionate about his work, the passion really is contagious. Yes, the subject itself is a little dry, so lectures can be a little content heavy and dry. He makes it very clear what he will be testing.
I really enjoyed this class, he is funny and extremely knowledgable. The only bad thing is that the grade is based purely on exams, so be prepared to study. I didn't find his exam questions that challenging. If you showed up, read his slides and the required sections in the textbook then you should be well prepared for it.
Georgescu is hilarious and is very passionate about geology. It is not an "easy A" course as many seem to think, you still need to show up to lectures and pay attention. If you take good notes and review his textbook it's easy to do well.
Dr. Georgescu is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about most of the content in this class. The test are not easy because he actually expects you to learn (shocker) but if you go to class, listen and review your notes you shouldn't have a problem. If you don't care, you'll probably fail. Great professor though, I really respect him!
I respect Dan as a professor and I do not think he is a bad one at all. He clearly tells you what he is including on the tests and is willing to answer any questions. However, I am not good at science do this class will be somewhat difficult if science is not your strongest trait. Sometimes he goes off topic in lecture but still a good prof.
This class is definitely not as interesting as the course description makes it appear. Georgescu's notes are all over the place - this is especially apparent when you try to make sense of them when studying for exams. I would recommend attending lecture and writing down everything he says - many slides consist only of images, very little text.
Clearly passionate about the material and kind to students. I would recommend attending all lectures - there is a lot he says that isn't in his lecture slides. He wants his students to do well, and gives you plenty of opportunity to do so. Huge review sessions before exams, tells you what he wants you to focus on. Nice guy, but boring course.
Dan is a great prof! This class is an easy A but you need to memorize a lot. Do not have to show up to lectures - just the week before a test because he tells you what's gonna be on it. Try to get exams from previous years, he recycles them. He's funny too!
Easy A ff you show up to class and read the textbook. He wrote the textbook so if you do miss a class it's really easy to catch up, and the book is a very simple easy read. He will basically tell you what to study and memorize and what not to (if you are in class). He's really funny and really wants his students to succeed!
His lectures were fairly boring, but you'll do better if you attend them as he comments lots on slides during lectures, and those comments are not posted anywhere later. He cracks jokes once in a while, but can go on some long tangents. I found him to be rude and disruptive during his exams.
Dan is very passionate about what he teaches but for a class for non-geology majors it was hard!! Have to go to class as his slides sometimes have just pictures on them and he talks about them in class. Lots of memorization of species and different classes of animals. Puts questions on tests that are ridiculous just to make sure no one gets an A.
Worst professor ever, incredibly rude and purposefully puts ridiculous questions on tests to ensure no one does well. Despite reading the textbook and attending lectures and studying weeks in advance, the exams are designed to make sure students fail. If you need a science option, I cannot emphasize ENOUGH on never taking a class with him again.
Like to cry at night because you know this non-science major option class is going to tank your GPA? Then this professor is for you - because he makes tests unrealistic and are designed for students to fail
An unnecessarily hard science option class for first years. Definitely would not recommend him because he doesn't explain concepts easily, moves through slides way too fast and is rude to students questions. Don't take if you need a science option because he designs tests to ruin your GPAs
Toughest professor teaching a class for an intro level science option. Doesn't reply to student's inquiries, rude, designs tests that ensure no more than 10 people get above a B+. Would not recommend taking at all
Took this class for a science option and it was a terrible mistake. He is quite rude and doesn't answer student questions. His textbook is also expensive and is very poorly written. There are many grammatical errors and at some points it does not make sense at all. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM EVER. I would rate him at 0 if I had the option
The textbook is incredibly expensive and does not adequately prepare students for his midterms. He does not test on concepts and theories, rather he designs tests to trip students ask. He asks small details and tricky info that most pass over. Tests and class are not designed to learn. DO NOT TAKE for a science option, will ruin your GPA.
I took 209 as an elective and thoroughly enjoyed it. Material was entry level but communicated with enthusiasm (his lectures were very good), tests were straightforward and had multiple (!)in class(!) review lectures beforehand. Set up the tests in such a way that only those whom didn't review or attend did poorly. Great prof, would recommend.
He said from the beginning that this class was no longer "rocks for jocks" and he was correct. However if you show up, take notes, and thoroughly study the textbook passages he assigns during test review lectures, you will do fine. Don't assume that it is an easy A, cause it is not. This class involves effort, independence, and studying to do well.
Talking to other students that got crappy marks, they all had one thing in common they didn't put much effort towards studying. This is an average level class all i had to do was show up, take notes, read the textbook, and review his notes to get an A. Not sure why other students think they deserve good marks when they put in no effort.
His exams are really easy if it comes to you actually studying and reading the textbook. His lectures are straightforward and sometimes even interesting, all while the professor also lights up the mood a bit. He might have a bit of an accent but he tries his best and loves what he teaches.
He's a really great teacher and knows the stuff. An easy course if you make notes and study the textbook with it. He makes it clear what he expects you to know so as long as you show up you will be fine.
In general he was a very fine teacher. I enjoyed showing up for most of his lessons as they were interesting and he was quite funny. Our tests were really easy, like finish 60 questions in half an hour easy. there was a lot of textbook readings but he would tell us before the test only 5 questions were from them so I didn't waste my time with them.
Took this as my science option and regretted it. Textbook is expensive, written by him with plenty of grammatical errors to keep you interested through the masses of text... 2x multiple choice midterms that include plenty of "pick the best answer" type questions. Interesting subject, not a great prof.
Hard to tell what in his lecture is and isn't important. Has his own textbook that fails at giving proper definitions and is ripe with paragraph after paragraph explanations and a lack of guidance. Has made up his own concepts and definitions WHICH HE WILL TEST YOU ON. And don't bother asking questions because he'll just reel you out. Blames studen
Makes sure no one gets an A. I took this as a GPA boost, but it's been the opposite. Go to lecture too because he doesn't put any words on his slides, just pics and tests you on it. Write down everything he says in lecture, he'll test you on it too. He is extremely disrespectful and full of himself.
Exams get pretty specific - either you studied enough or you didn't. His exams are MC and basically impossible to reason / guess your way through. Known to berate students for asking what sorts of material the exam will cover, to the point where he threatens to take away marks for asking such questions. Learn the details and you will do well.
Awesome proff. His lectures are clear and delivered perfectly. his expectations are very fair. asks you to mark the important part, which will be on test. simple mcqs. just read the textbook and ATTEND REVIEW class. you will do great. Everyone complaining here, doesn't go to class or read the book. best science options for non majors. AWESOME CLASS
Great prof for an intro geology courses. As long as you put in the time and read the textbook you will be fine. Lectures can be dry but he will tell you what you need to know for exams, he sometimes includes stuff from lectures that is not in the textbook on tests.
He wrote his own textbook so if you don't like his style of teaching, just follow the powerpoints with his textbook. His accent and his excitement for geology can make him hard to understand at times. Midterms are hit or miss.. First one was HARD as he used pictures for 3 pages as questions. Gives extra points. Uses midterm 1 and 2 q's for final.
Very easy class b/c of the bonus marks. I got 69% for 1st midterm, but he gave bonus 5% to our overall grade which boosted me one letter grade. And it is impossible to not do well in the final, you have 20 free pts, then the exact 40Q are from midterms on D2L, the rest 40Qs are from 3rd part of lecture. Got 60% on last 40Q but still ended w/ A-
Attended the intro lecture, decided I didn't like his teaching (his jokes get old real fast..), so only went back for exams. His lecture slides are vague, but if you follow his textbook - whose grammatical errors lead me to believe he literally sold his soul to get published - along with the slides, you'll be fine. I'd avoid his course, if you can.
This is a pay2pass class. You have to buy his textbook since he takes all exam questions from there. Slides are not important and going to class isnt needed if you just learn the textbook. Final is super easy since 40 out of the 80 questions he takes from past midterms and solutions for those those are on d2l... I thought he was joking about that.
Class is super easy, barely studied for final but you get first 60% pretty much for free. I did bad in midterms but he also gave bonus marks. Textbook is not needed if you go to the lectures, I didn't even buy the textbook. Why spend dozens of hours struggling to get an A when you can get an A- with barely any effort and zero stress ; )
Easy A, great GPA booster. All his midterms are online, he uses the same ones every year. His midterms and finals are also based off his own textbook which is a pretty easy read so you dont really have to attend. You can skim over it and pass with an amazing grade. For the lectures I did attend, hes very casual and funny and an overall good prof.
Don't bother going to lectures as everything was in his textbook. Some good practice questions from the back of the textbook that will help with the MC tests
Lectures arent mandatory since everything he talks about is from his book. Only go to class where he reviews what's gonna be on the exam. But some other lectures he'd tell you things that wont be on the test. 50% of the final was copy and pasted from last midterms which answers were on d2l. easy A if you read the text, it's small too. just memorize
Worst prof ever. For someone who is teaching a class that specifically outlines it is for non-science majors, this guy goes out of his way to ensure students fail. If you're wanting to tank your GPA, I would definitely recommend this guy. Trust me, this is an incredibly tough class not material wise, but because the professor is absolutely horrible
I have 3.86 GPA - Unless U have a science background, this course is not easy. It wouldn't be too hard if the test focused on the fundamental principles of geology, but it instead focuses on your knowledge of the periodic table. Also, his slides and textbook (which he wrote) are CONSTANTLY interchanging terms and/or in conflict with each other.
TERRIBLE prof! DO NOT TAKE GEOLOGY 202 WITH HIM. His slides are so unorganized and his tests are all over the place. He makes fun of other profs and is very condescending about students and profs. Definitely would take Glgy 202 with Quinnie instead.
He should say at the beginning of his classes that he lectures from his textbook and not the required one for the course. His lectures were confusing, and his slides were all over the place. His tests are quite unfair, because the other section had a midterm average that was 10% higher than his section.
Tests were more like trivia than an actual exam and often notes given directly contradicted what was said in lecture. Stated that "an easy test is not a test worth writing" and the other lecture had tests that were much easier and as a result I had friends in the same course doing much better because of having different tests even if they did less.
Georgescu is a good professor; very caring if you attend lecture (especially the last optional lecture on BSD where he talks about what to expect from each lecture *hint-hint*). Pay attention to what he says, as slides can be unclear, and take good notes. He can seem a bit rude if one asks questions that aren't relevant to lecture, but means well.
GLGY 209 with him was a great experience. Passionate, knows his stuff, and does his best to make lecture interesting. People who go in with the "rocks for jocks" mindset typically fail. If you study the textbook and slides you are guaranteed an A. 5% bonus at the end. One of the better entry-level options for sure. If you don't like rocks, good luc
Class is straight memorization of minuscule details from the textbook. Despite being a class for non science majors the class requires a background knowledge of chemistry and some physics. Prof is rude to anyone who asks questions. Take this class with a different prof so you can get 10%+ higher of a grade.
It is not an easy A class, you have to work for it. If you show up to all his lectures and read the textbook then you will do fine. Dan is really nice and tells you exactly what you need to know.
He was a bit hectic with his lecture style. His midterm was very hard and was on heavy on content that he told the class they wouldn't need to know details about or remember. His final and lecture assignment were at good levels of difficulty.
He's definitely not as bad as a lot of these reviews say. For a science option specified for non-science majors, GEOL 209 is harder than you would think. There is a lot of material to cover, and a lot of it, especially content for midterm 2, is hard. However, it is definitely possible to get a good grade if you work for it.
This class is supposed to be for non majors yet he heavily tests on tiny details and memorization. The organization is hard to follow on its own let alone with a heavy accent involved. You need to have a science background because details of chemistry, biology and astronomy are constantly brought up and also tested on. Dont take this class. Rude.
Class was supposed to be for non-major, but he taught it like every student aspired to be a geologist. Constantly contradicts himself and his text book has numerous mistakes that he does not correct. If something is not up to his standard he blames the students and says its their fault. Test on topics/details he said would NOT be tested on. RUDE.
Very comprehensive material, that can only be done well with care taken to study text, power-point lectures, and verbal lecture info, to connect yourself. People complain because they heard this class was an easy "rocks for jocks" and are upset they have to work and study for the class. Very clear on what needs to be studied. It is a dense course.
What an amazing prof, passion really manages to rub off on non-major students. A lot of people take this class expecting an easy A, but that certainly isn't the case for GLGY 209. I read the entire textbook and went over any possible content as the tests can throw some curveballs your way. Take this prof, he is intelligent and passionate.
What he does very well is present vague lectures that do nothing but waste time, where real learning is to be done in reading. But, alas, Dan does not believe in posting reading schedule and by god, why would he make a course schedule? I hope your ability to read minds and follow along are great because his lectures are drab, boring and useless.
No consideration for students, can't even reply to emails in a timely fashion. Terrible professor.
Easy to tell he is passionate about his work. Teaches this 307 class like we all have had prior knowledge. His textbook was obviously edited by a blind man. Horrible teaching style, vague lectures & the tests are all multiple choice with 5 possible answers. Stay away from this class if you are an arts student who needs a science option.
Terrible prof. Do not. DO NOT take any classes with him. This was supposed to be an option class for non majors and he freaking treats it like we're doing a masters degree. Terrible book (written by himself that is 100$) terrible tests and a guaranteed fail. AVOID HAVING HIM AS A PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS.
Great Prof, always learned a lot in this course To succeed is literally use class notes and read thoroughly the textbook! People find it hard because the lack of effort they put in, but with effort can be a fun and enjoyable and learn a lot with this class! But taking glgy 209 before this glgy 307 helps a little bit too!!
Honestly, the way this class is taught is horrible. We aren't all PhD's... You know there is an issue when you curve an exam by giving a starter of 40% and its avg is still low 70s.
This is not 'Rocks for Jocks' and should not be treated as such. People who give him bad reviews clearly don't try hard enough and think they can just show up and get an easy A. He is not perfect and isn't the best communicator but his 3 tests are fair if you actually read the book and come to class. As an Arts student 209 was fine science option.
Lectures closely match textbook, so make sure to read through it once before ur exams. Attend his review lectures if nothing else as he will say exactly which sections you can skip when studying. 40/80 of the final questions are copy/pasted from midterms 1&2. This class is not hard, but you do need to prepare for the exams.
Yes, his lectures are vague & he can be difficult to understand, but if you put in the work you can do great. Get the textbook because that will save your life for studying. I rarely attended the lecture & just taught myself the material from the textbook (super easy). He does tell you what will/won't be on the tests. And he's hilarious.
Dan's a real gem. Although this course was extremely demanding and is arguably one of the harder science options, Georgescu made it fun. He's extremely caring and will go out of his way to ensure that students get the best marks possible(ie;giving startups/pre-exam review sessions). His accent's not heavy at all. Attend lectures and read the book!
Dans a real gem! Hes always willing to stay a few minutes to answer questions after class and does stellar review days. His lectures sometimes goes a bit fast, but its always clear.
honestly this prof wasn't that bad, but his lectures are very confusing and all over the place. I did better by not attending and reading the text at home. Only good part is that he gave tons of bonus marks, making it possible for non-science kids like me to succeed LOL.
GLGY 209 taught by Dr. Georgescu is a fine science option especially for non-majors. The textbook is quite useful (he wrote it) and is worth purchasing. Like any natural science class the lectures can get boring but he usually is good with being concise and often ends them early. Class is easy enough and he often gives our grade boosts.
This class is very enjoyable. The lectures are interesting and the prof has a great sense of humor. The textbook lines up really well with the lecture material presented. This makes studying with the textbook super convenient. The textbook also has practice exam questions at the back. The exam format is very straight forward.
He is a nice person, however, it can be hard to understand his accent at times - hence, making it harder to understand the course material. He is very enthusiastic about the content, however, the course is very lecture focused and doesn't make sense if you don't have a strong understanding in science.
Super good prof. Easy to follow lectures and he posts his slides on D2L. The tests are super easy if you put a little bit of time into studying. The textbook isn't needed, although i found it very helpful. Make sure you don't skip lectures otherwise it can be a little difficult to know what to study for the tests.
absolutely terrible prof. told the class on the first day to NOT go to his office hours or ask him questions after class. thought this was a joke so I went to ask him a question after class and he yelled at me and told me to ask someone else. Very confused about why someone who seems to hate their job would choose to teach students.
Won't speak to students outside of class, and won't answer emails, literally says he doesn't have an inbox for his email. Tells you to memorize certain things for tests, then doesn't test on those things, instead focusing on tiny details he mentioned in lectures that aren't even in the textbook or lecture slides. Absolutely horrible.
Good lectures, obviously knows what he's talking about and works to make them engaging. Things emphasized in class may not be emphasized on the quiz. Seems kind of unapproachable.
If you're not super sensitive, he's a pretty funny guy. But since this class is mostly for non-science majors, the class is pretty difficult. Attend classes because he will tell you which parts of the textbook you don't need to read. Otherwise, read the textbook often because its hard to get used to that thick Romanian accent.
First off, the course is not near as easy as it is said to be-- this course must've gotten harder in the last couple years. Second, he is not helpful at all! No response to e-mails and was rude in person when you ask for help.. just tells you to e-mail him. There are easier classes with more responsive (and nicer) profs. 0/10 would not recommend.
He curves his marks a lot, so even if the class is really tough, all you have to worry about is doing better than the class average and you'll have a fine mark. He is not for everybody! If you're looking for an easy science option this ain't it. But if you're up for the challenge, I'd recommend him.
The rudest prof to students, when you ask a question he is condescending and asking you to email him but never answers his email. 2 midterms, 1 final. Never went to class and only read the textbook and did fine. Impossible to fail the class but doesn't mean you'll enjoy it.
Professor Marius (Dan) Georgescu is hard to understand in lecture, he talks very fast and he makes specific question on the test about stuff he mentioned once in class that was not in the lecture slides. This class is very important to attended as the lecture slides don't even contain important information. On test day make sure you listen to him.
Took Geology 209 for spring, very easy course- 2 midterms and 1 final, no assignments. I still learned a lot and found the course interesting and the prof is fair.
Super unapproachable and won't answer questions if you email him. Told us specific things to study for the tests then didn't put those on and instead tested on things he told us NOT to study! Curved the grades a ton, which is good I guess, but also shows he doesn't know how to teach at all since most people failed.
You should take it if you love Geological History. He do not write much on his lecture slides, so prepare to take notes. He have a very strong accent, and and since I'm an international student, it was a little bit hard to follow.
Don't have enough time to finish the test. The test for online course is much much harder than the regular one. You are forced to buy the book and try to find answers on the book. You can't download the book, and the user interface of the website is bad.
I'm grateful that I took this class online as I was able to rewind the posted lectures as many times as I needed. I might not take one of his classes in-person as it is sometimes hard to understand the names for species without multiple hearings and the open textbook. Overall I very much enjoyed his enthusiasm and he is very clear about exams.
Pretty cool prof. You definitely have to pay attention to the audio recorded lessons (kinda wish there was an option to read what he says) cause they show up on his tests. Only 3 tests for the class and they are doable if you read the textbook and pay attention to what he says in the recordings. The readings aren't bad though, not super dry.
Dr. Georgescu as a man is very nice and it's not his fault but unfortunately I am paying for this class and want a good grade and so, I found it was very hard to keep up with him and write my notes because of his accent. I had to keep playing the same section over and over again just to write down one sentence of notes.
His class is an easy one for non-science students who need science credits (even easier when it's online). Only 3 tests and no assignments. You don't really have to pay a lot of time on this subjects. Just memorize all the vocabulary and you will do a good job. However, I found the class really dry and I learn nothing.
You can see how passionate Dr. Georgescu is about what he teaches The only problem I had was with the textbook. The app for it barely worked
Prof was an alright guy. Did not seem to be very engaging and did not seem to want to answer questions you might have. course material was very interesting and covered a variety of topics. Class was pretty easy if you had your notes from his lectures. He does talk very fast!
You could skip all the lectures and zooms, just read the textbook. Hilarious guy but often curt and a little unforgiving. Only 3 Exams, so study up!
This course is not a GPA booster, he is very passionate in what he does. But is hard to reach through emails. The course is harder than you should expect. Funny man, but in order to succeed you will need to buy the textbook. The content on the midterms & final can progressively difficult.
Pay attention to the lectures and do your readings. Tests were open book and you will succeed if you listen to the lectures and especially read the textbook.
Awful. Never again. Terrible professor, does not respond to emails. The exams are harder than any nursing courses I've done. NOT A GPA BOOSTER. Save yourself time and money and do not take this course.
This class is described as a "GPA booster," yet it is far from that. Only three tests determine your total grade, and they become more challenging as you proceed. His exam completion time is absurd; you will not have enough time to complete the exam. He doesn't react to emails, and his exams are constantly filled with problems.
This class is incredibly straightforward and an easy A so long as you do the bare minimum. All exams were open book, answers could easily be found, and he taught very well in his lectures. All the people complaining don't realize it's a university course, and expect an A without effort like its high school. Great prof, would take again.
The people complaining are such wankers. This class was so easy everything is open book and multiple choice. Dans one of the longest teaching profs at this school and with good reason, hes a great teacher. You need to do very little to get an A. If you didnt get the grade you wanted thats on you
Took this course as a science option but I'm an arts student Found content a bit difficult if you don't rush through lectures and read textbook thoroughly a good grade is very achievable I suspect it's easier if you're a science person Lectures sometimes hard to follow Tests were fair minus a few questions per test Prof tried to make interesting.
Dr. Georgescu is very sweet and caring. His classes tend to drag on, but I found he presented it interestingly enough to keep me captivated. He is extremely passionate, and very accommodating for online classes. He often showed us his "little helper" (his cat). His tests were very straightforward and the textbook was an easy read.
There's only a handful of tests for this class but the test questions are HARD even though it's open book. I put only a moderate amount of effort in and still did pretty well, but if you're looking for a mark in the 90s you're going to have to put the work in.
He's so into Geology its very endearing. His passion for teaching and learning makes it so much easier to want to learn too. He's kind of vague when he teaches though, probably a side effect of forgetting that not everyone's as smart as him. Such a sweet guy though pls be nice 2 him.
Seriously wonderful prof!! I had to take this course to complete a science requirement and was VERY nervous. Dr. Georgescu was so kind!! He was always willing to give his time to help, and was extremely encouraging the whole course! I vocalized to him how nervous I was and he went out of his way to simplify concepts and offer encouragement.
Had this as an async class but in person exams. He gives good tips in lectures but material is a lot. There is a lot to memorize. Bute he's quite generous with marking however there are only 3 assessments the entire course so if you do bad on one of them it'll be hard to improve it. Accent quite thick.
Super fair guy, loves his rocks. Took this for my science credit and it's probably one of the best options out there for my fellow arts people. 3 tests open book and he wrote the textbook so pretty easy. Without watching any lectures, you chould prob get at LEAST a B+, higher if you actually read the textbook
I had Dan for online GEO209, lectures were easy to understand. He does have an accent if that throws you off. He has a cute cat, I paid more attention to the cat than the class. Decent prof, easy science class for the credit.
There's a lot of material you need to memorize and you must read the textbook. He asks SPECIFIC questions that depend on you memorizing a random sentence in the TB. The lectures a bit hard to understand. He teaches this course wanting it to be more than a beginner course, so do not expect the easy "A" that everyone says it is.
The course is heavier for non science majors - but I still really enjoyed the class and learned a lot. This class requires effort to do well but is totally doable if you read the textbook, attend lectures and take notes. Prof. Georgescu is very passionate about the content and wants students to do well, this comes through in his lectures.
Amazing prof. Took for a science credit and the prof made the material very easy to understand. Being online he released the lectures in modules and was very clear on what would be on the exams. During recorded lectures he would give mock exam questions so you knew how to prepare. Does use his own textbook but other than that a great prof!
I switched from a philosophy class to the online lecture of GLGY 209. I enjoyed the material and liked that there were only two midterms and an open book final. With that being said, you have to read and review the content from the textbook to succeed. I wouldn't call this an easy A class but it was interesting!
I found his attitude was condescending and this took away from the content. The course is not as easy as it was made out to be and his attitude (for which he has a reputation), made the course terrible for me. Some people like him some find him rude... I found him to be the latter. Anyway -- I don't recommend it to anyway. Boost your GPA elsewhere.
Hes a great guy, easy course 2 midterm and a final
He does the most to ensure his students are excelling in his class. He's clear with what material will be on the midterms and exams and wants nothing but the best for everyone. His exams are quite easy if you have studied the material - he is also very easy to talk to if you are having issues with the course. I would absolutely take another class!
Dan is very passionate about his profession and shows it through his lectures, he had online lectures on d2l so you don't have to worry about missing a class. He really wants his students to learn and tries his best to help. It's an easy class if you go to his lectures and read the textbook
Dan is super passionate about his field and has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to geology and geological history. He is also very nice and makes lectures enjoyable to attend. I came out of this course with a newfound interest in geology and now want to take more classes for it.
Super passionate and knowledgeable, really fun guy, and super clear about exams. Attend lectures and read the textbook (his textbook is really good) and you'll do fine. You're marked by two midterms and a final (he can get a little stressed on these days).
Dr. Georgescu (Dan) is a wonderful person. His great passion for geology makes the lectures worth attending. He is very fair in marking. I hope to take more classes with Dan in the future.
Dr. Georgescu is very knowledgeable and passionate about geology. The course is centred around 3 tests, however if you study and read the textbook, they are very fair. He cares for his students and is willing to help outside of class. Would definitely take another class with him!
Dan Georgescu is so amazing you will love him dearly. He makes science so interesting and his tests are fair and quite easy if you read the textbook and show up to the lectures. He has cute cats, and an amazing sense of humor, take a class with this guy and see every single fantastic trait that I can't possibly fit into 350 characters.
Dan is an awesome professor, and made geology very enjoyable. As long as you follow and study the material, you will have no problem with getting a good grade. He is always clear with his expectations through his emails and d2L updates, and simply wants nothing but success for his students.
Lectures are interesting and stuff are not that hard. Got no homeworks and all test are mc. Just get the textbook and revise the stuff in it and you will get a nice grade.
His lectures are good but can sometimes turn extremely condescending and disrespectful.
He's very passionate about what he teaches. His tests are open book and easy if you studied the textbook and reviewed the lectures. He's funny during lecture but sometimes can come across as rude or blunt when talking one on one, don't think he means any harm by it. Says a lot during lecture, must write notes and/or read the textbook to do well.
Dan is a greate prof, if you want to be successful study the textbook terms. His slides give you the terms but not always the details so your text book is your bff. He cares about you doing well but expects you to do the work needed to get there. His tests are reasonable and fair. We had 2 midterms and a final.
Prof Georgescu is awesome. We had three assessments and they were all open book! He is so funny and very knowledgeable about the material. I took this as a science elective (being a non-major) and I was pleasantly glad I chose this as one of my classes. Would recommend for non-science majors:)
He's a nice guy, made all the exams open book....
I love him so much. So sweet and funny. Attendance isn't mandatory but would definitely benefit you. Makes half of his tests open book and half of the final is old questions from midterms you've already written. READ HIS TEXTBOOK and you are golden.
He was really rude and unhelpful. Myself and many of my fellow classmates felt he was passive aggressive. I have no clue how he has such a high rating. He is very hard to understand when he speaks and he mispronounced words often which is confusing. Also many of his text questions are worded very poorly. This course was ridiculously and just bad.
He is awful. And makes you buy his textbook which has many mistakes in it. He also tests on material he doesn't go over and isn't covered in textbook. BEWARE THIS GPA DROPPER!!
I only gave him 3 because of how interneresting his lectures are . However, If this is not the case, I would give him 1 bcz he was rude and condescending when I dealt with him personally.
50 min for 50 Questions on the exam and you need to fill up the Scantron sheet within this time limit. This is what happened in MT2. The exams are open book and so you know what level of details you are expected to know for open book exams. The only good thing is he provides deferral even for those who missed exams with no legitimate reason
One of two courses I have regretted talking throughout my 4 years of studying; the other one was 500 level science course. The content is pretty much heavy and you are tested on memorization of specific and tiniest details noted in lecture and textbook and final is cumulative. He is an Eastern European so expect a tough and very strict.
worst class. worst prof. save yourself a ton of stress and dont take this class
Just the worst class ever. Prof is rude and it's WAY to hard for a Introduction non-major stream science course.
I did not enjoy this course. I wish I had never taken it. You can not show up to classes and pass but dont expect the prof to be nice or helpful
I don't know what this professors issue is but he is SO passive aggressive and rude. One time someone asked him to repeat himself in class and he flat our refused. Bro, your accent is brutal, be willing to repate yourself. He is rude and not helpful. Doesn't care if his students succeed or not.
Not a fan of the course or of the prof. I wouldn't take the class again or recommend it to anyone.
Mandatory textbook (he's the author) purchase, can't even find pdf for it and the textbook literally has tons of typos. He tests so many small things that non-majors shouldn't really know. Rude to all students and never answers emails. Horrible accent and overall not helpful and a bad prof. Avoid taking his courses.
I regretted taking the course with him and I will never take a glyg course after this course. Do not trust many of these positive reviews. The course is not a GPA booster but it will let you cry like a rooster.
Man gives me mixed feelings if he cares about students or not based on class and personal experience but I lean towards the later. The content is so Much heavy and you some questions tests on the most tiniest details that you might miss.
Wouldn't wish this course on my worst enemy. Not an Easy A. Avoid it if you can.
Awful and rude prof. Not an easy course at all, especially for it being for non science majors.
Bad class, difficult class.
Taking his class is the greatest regret that I have in my degree. Absolutely is not a GPA Booster at all. Prepare to have a professor that is incredibly condescending and dismissive toward students. During the final exam, he didn't print enough exams for the class and later blamed the class when there weren't enough exams to go around. Do not take.
Professor georgescu is definitely overhated and I personally found his exams fair. He does have a thick accent however which sometimes leads to miscommunication. Read the textbook as everything in it is fair game on exams
All his questions were based on the textbook, he even helped out to outline specific dates and info.
He wrote the textbook for the course. Any and all test material is pulled directly from it or his presentations. He gives all info you need to succeed in this class. When I had him the tests were open book. To succeed all you need to know is the gist of a topic where the information is found.
The arrogance of this guy to write a textbook in his second language and not get a proof reader is hilarious. He charges 150 dollars for it and it can almost be hard to read because its so poorly written. This being said, if you study the content and PAY ATTENTION TO THE SMALL DETAILS, you will do well on his tests.
He's a really nice and funny guy. His tests are open book and the class averages have been high. I find that reading the textbook and taking notes based on that is the best approach. The workload is manageable (only 2 tests and one final), and hes passionate about what he teaches and really wants us to do well and learn. Love him
Highly recommend taking his class if you want an easy A. We got cheat sheets for every exam (3 exams), he wrote the textbook you use for the class too, so if you do the practice questions in the textbook they'll most likely show up on the test. only problem is that there is no answer key for the practice questions.
He's really nice and passionate about teaching geology. He doesn't try to make it hard for anyone but he does have certain standards and expectations. If you show that you care, he's super awesome.
Dan is a very passionate and knowledgeable professor. He posts his videos on D2L, making it easy to keep up. I have never had a bad experience with him or his grading, and he truly wants his students to do well. He makes jokes and is very understanding.
Great professor teaching an interesting course, would recommend it to anyone looking for a science option. The tests will be textbook-heavy, that is to say, you won't get higher than a B- without studying the textbook. He records his lectures on D2L which means you can skip a few lectures and still get away with it. Overall would recommend him.
Dan is one of the kindest people I've ever met. He went out of his way to be at the university on a day he wasn't originally planning to be there just to let me look over my midterm. He then raised my midterm mark by 10% because he saw me coming to class consistently and I got a low mark. He is so funny and I looked forward to his class every day.
Very good prof and made it easy for us to get a good gpa in his class. He would make zoom calls where he'd tell the class where they should put their focus on before every midterm which made it easier to understand his exams. He also provided us with a chance to make our own cheatsheets and gave a starter boost prior to each midterm. Rly good prof.
nice guy genuinely wants to see everyone succeed, enjoyed the class a lot
a very lovely man who has perfected a great easy science course. all you need to do to succeed is get the textbook, but i recommend going to lectures consistently to actually understand the content. as an arts student, i thoroughly enjoyed this class. tip: get the textbook from the library and book it strategically during the week of the midterms!
Dan is an amazing professor who genuinly wants his student to suceed. His exam are very easy and hes is very gicing when it come to tools/ Bonus marks. True Rocks for Jocks.
Georgescu's good. He's funny & he knows his stuff. His exams are big, but they're all open book. Don't assume that this class is a GPA booster, though! You'll need to study, show up, and do readings to do well. If you don't, you'll fail and the prof won't care. A lot of people made this mistake in my class, hence all the 1/5 reviews recently.
This course is fair game. Can get very specific with the test questions, mostly from the textbook. Overall, a good and interesting class. Really liked the times he showed off his cats tho.
I love you
Professor Georgescu is a good prof. You can tell he is very passionate about what he is teaching, which makes the lectures very enjoyable. The class is test heavy, but his lectures and slides are all you need. I'd recommend him to anyone looking for an interesting senior level option.
take glgy 305 with him. just do it and thank me later. great guy and great course, loved him
This is NOT a GPA booster. It took a lot of work to do well and I had less for other classes. The tests use very tricky wording and it's easy to get a B or C in a class that is advertised as an automatic A. He wasn't happy with how well the class was doing on the midterms, so he made the final extra difficult. This is not like psyc 203 or soci 201.
Georgescu is a great prof and I had a lot of fun in this class. The content was very clear, and was separated into 3 parts for three exams. No other assignments or content was used for grading.
Professor Georgescu is amazing. The class is very interesting, and you can see that he is incredibly enthusiastic about what he teaches, you can tell he loves what he does. The class is very test heavy but thats expected, overall phenomenal prof and fun class.
I guarantee that the majority of bad reviews are from students who took Dan's class thinking they could an easy A without ever going. Questions are taken from the material on the slides, he offers numerous review sessions, gives 2-page cheat papers, and start-up points for exams. Dan is awesome and so caring, but he won't do the work for you.
Absolute gem of a professor. it's sometimes hard to understand him due to his accent, but once you get past that his lectures are very straightforward and easy to understand. Wonderful dude who very much loves what he does, exams were easy and he allowed for 'cheatsheets' for both midterms and the final. Very lecture heavy though, try not to skip.
Professor Georgescu is a caring and engaging instructor. The workload is manageable, with open-book tests and a helpful textbook. Unstuckstudy AI is a great study aid alongside the class materials.
Come to lecture, he gives a lot of information that isn't straight from the textbook that will be on the exams. I had him for Earth 209. The only thing graded was 2 mid terms and a final example, not cumulative and got cheat papers for each. The way he teaches you can tell he cares about his students and he is passionate about what he teaches.
His lectures were super simple and he often went off an random rants about the funniest things! For every test, he spent a full week reviewing exactly what should be studied and allowed us to use multiple cheat papers for each one! He took the time to get to know the class and asked us feedback on lectures throughout! Great class and great guy!
prof was awesome although in my opinion his lectures can be quite dry. however hes a rlly good guy who rly cares about his students and even gave cheat sheets for all the exams.
His lectures were super engaging and very easy to follow. All tests were MC and he allowed for cheatsheets on every exam, and went through a week of review on prior to every test. Quite a thick accent but was still fairly easy to understand. Love this guy.
Answers students' questions with great detail. Helped the class get as high marks as possible- and prepares students for tests well. A little stern at times but this is a good thing as it guided the focus of the class to stay on topic. I'm not someone who likes geology but he made this course interesting for me.
An amazing prof but he does put a lot of things from lecture into his exams that aren't in the slides. He does give you cheat sheets with multiple pages for every exam and a 6% average boost at the end of the course. Overall good prof, some boring lectures but he is very passionate about geology
Lectures are sometimes boring but honestly, not that hard if you try enough. the textbook is pretty straightforward but i wouldn't say this is an easy gpa booster. Pay attention, study with the textbook, and all should be decent.
He seems nice and it is a very easy class since it's all online but his lectures are very hard to understand due to his accent and the live Zoom meetings he gets very distracted and can't get to the point or answer anyone's questions. I've definitely taken better online classes.
Genuinely no clue how anyone gave this guy less than a 4, grading criteria was very clear and questions on the assessments were very easy, in the lecture recordings he highlights when a concept will show up on the next assessment. On top of that, he's a really nice dude who's truly passionate about the subject.
