Deliberately makes curriculum harder to pick out potential TA/Grad students. No regard for the rest of the class who come out having learned nothing and a horrible grade.
Hardest class i've taken at Georgetown. he's a nice guy, but the material is hard, and he makes the tests even harder. not a course you can bs your way through like the econ principle classes.
Good class if youre into econ. Watch out for the "Schwartz Swallow" where he takes excessively large sips of water.
he makes funny hand motions and drinks a lot of water
Schwartz is smart but too smart to teach well.
He's very entertaining, what with all the gesticulating, hopping about, drinking water, and telling truly horrible jokes. He's incredibly smart and incredibly excited about econ, but in order to do well, you need to do a lot of work outside class (hint: practice midterms!).
Complicates the hell out of Microeconomics.
He's entertaining because of his random jokes and yes, the water sipping, but lectures are still really boring and his notes aren't very helpful ...compared to the other class he made things complicated, but his tests are fairly easy b/c they pretty much replicate the practice midterm he gives us.
This course is "Principles of Microeconomics", yet he teaches the same stuff as his more advanced courses. He gets mad at people who have to leave when class is over (he regularly runs 5+ minutes ove r the end of class), and tries to cram so much stuff in that he won't even let people take notes.
If you like geometry you'll love this man. If not, you are warned. Econ for him is a matter of shapes and triangles. It is actually a really fun class but almost impossible to follow. Thank God for TA's.
Very animated lectures. Still, the material is dry. He is fun to watch lecture and does a good job of providing real life examples to compare to the subjects at hand. I wish he taught more by example than he does, though.
Forget the book, just come to his lectures and take notes and take the practice exams and you're good. Very good lecturer.
Very entertaining lecturer and always willing to help, but sometimes makes the material seem so easy in lecture that you are surprised by the difficulty of the exercises and midterms. Study for them! Book unnecessary; just show up for lecture.
He's a very funny and entertaining professor, unfortunately he has the power to make an hour and a half seem like four. Despite this, you learn a lot, but don't really know how to use it unless the TA tells you. A good TA is a must for this class.
very hard if you are not familiar with the subject matter and not mathematically oriented.
You think you're all set in this class until you take the final. It is impossible. The first two tests aren't bad if you look at your notes and the practice exams, but the final is like nothing you've ever seen. He also manages to get a work out every time he lectures from all his dancing around.
Prof. Schwartz is probably a very brilliant man, but not such a brilliant teacher. The curves make getting a good grade easy (just memmorize his practice tests for mid-terms and expect to feel like you failed the final). I'm not sure I learned anything though (I slept through most of class). Beware
The lectures get very boring, but the workload isn't bad. The TAs don't speak English or teach very well, so you kinda have to teach yourself. The midterms are almost identical to the practice tests, so just memorize them. The final is the most difficult test I've ever taken, but he curves it.
good TA is a must, schwartz knows his stuff just can't teach it
Couldn't explain anything, not interested in teaching, and not very nice either
He is a fantastic professor. He cares so much about what he teaches, and makes you want to care too. Not a lot of work throughout the semester, just make sure to take advantage of all the study opportunities he offers.
one of the few good things about this class is watching marius dance around the podium... hes a brilliant guy but a lousy teacher... he also seems like a pretty nice guy- except if you're a microecon student-- and he seems to be pretty disdainful of everyone in his entry level classes... hes pretty funny though. but his lectures are incomprehensibl
Prof. Schwartz is certainly interesting to watch, as he runs around the front of the classroom, and he and his many odd idioms are even the subject of a facebook group (Marius Schwartz Appreciation Society). The positives end there, however. His lectures are incomprehensible, and he is almost universally condescending.
I took Econ in high school and find his lectures VERY unclear. He talks too fast, does not explain concepts well, and although will crack jokes every so often, has a higher-than-thou, superior attitude. Unless you're great at Econ and will do well regardless of the prof, AVOID AVOID.
Professor Schwartz is unapproachable, condescending and impatient. His lectures are confusing and he rushes through them anyway. He stresses the use the aplia program: DO NOT RELY ON IT! It is much MUCH easier than Schwartz' tests. His weak jokes will garner a laugh or too, and his accent is occassionally entertaining, but otherwise AVOID him!!!!
Schwartz is a rather hilarious guy, but I don't find him very clear or helpful. He seems to think going over 1 example for 10 seconds will make all of micro just click on in your head as he stares at you and says "hookay?". I had AP Micro in HS and it was comparatively a much better experience, but the class is funny to be in.
unless you are already good at econ, don't take this class- don't expect to learn anything from schwartz. it's hard. do the practice exams over and over- they will help you the most when it comes to the midterm and final. only take this class if you already are confidant w/econ- otherwise, STAY AWAY.
Fortunately, I'm pretty good at econ. But I learned nothing in class, I had to teach myself everything. The Aplia assignments are a good way to boost your grade. Other than that, practice the sample problems for the midterm and final.
Econ is just a really hard class - Schwartz is not that bad. There are 3 assignments and lots of aplia. The midterm is basically the same as the practice one he gives you. The final seems hard but the curve is really generous. He tries to be entertaining and really wants the class to like him. He's a nice guy but the class in general is just hard.
l see a bunch of horrible descriptions and then a few really good ones- I think he got on and rated himself because I dont know how anybody could possibly give this professor a good rating. He's funny and seems nice (until you talk with him) but he is arrogant, short-tempered, and incomprehensible
Hated him, hate him more now cause the final was RIDICULOUS. Why throw curveballs at us about concepts that were never explained well in the first place? If these negative reviews won't convince you to NOT take Schwartz, I don't know what will. TAKE LEVINSON. Econ is abstract and can be hard to understand; a good professor is absolutely essential.
You start off thinking that this guy is ok, b/c he's really funny and energetic. Then you realize that he doesn't really teach you anything and then gives you tests that don't really pertain to what he talked about in the lectures. The final was completely ridiculous. Only take his class if you love Econ and are prepared to work your ass off.
This should summarize Marius pretty well: I gave one of the problems on the practice final to a graduate student from GW, and she said that not only did she see that kind of problem in Micro Theory, she also simply couldn't do it. Great. Now I was really looking forward to the final (which turned out to be five times harder than the practice final). I had a flat out A all year, but since the final is worth 50%, my final grade was dragged down to a B+ Bottom line = if you want to finish with a B+ or higher, either ace everything else all year, including the midterm, or invite yourself over to Marius's house for dinner and steal the final.
Super Marius really isnt as bad as everyone makes him out to be. He is amusing in class and there isnt too much work. The Aplia isnt hard, and the midterm is just like the sample. The final is difficult, but the curve really helps.
Professor Schwartz is GREAT! At first I though the class was a little boring with the simple econ basics, but he goes way beyond that. He is amusing in class, and teaches the concepts very clearly with many examples. If you really want to learn a lot about Econ take Schwartz. His tests are hard but I was able to get an A without working too hard
I agree: Schwartz must have gotten on and rated himself - why else would there be such starkly contrasting reviews? Avoid him if you can, he is terrible. The fact that the reviews vary so much is saying something - Econ with him could work for you, or make it your worst class.

i dont think hes that much worse than all the rest of the econ teachers, but all of them kind of suck. its not an easy class, but it IS possible to do alright if you're good at math or want to put in work. homework exercises are impossible, but get a tutor to help you do them. i never knew what the hell was going on during lecture
To be fair, I believe Prof. Schwartz does care about his students, he just does not realze that we do not all automatically 'get' econ. The problem sets are manegable, but do not reflect what you will see on the exam. Very difficult, coming from a 'non-mathy' person. If you get him, you may want to become bf with your ta...
He's nice, but struggles to explain material that he gets, but you don't
Very difficult class -- professor assumes you "get" econ, but the class is extremely curved in terms of grade. Mid-term completely reflects the practices tests --but final does not. The final was the most difficult exam I have ever taken in my entire life.
So most of the ratings for Schwartz here are from freshmen who are just not cut out for econ. Most likely, they are stupid MSB kids. Schwartz is funny, dynamic, knows his stuff, and always wants to help.
Very good econ professor. Cracks jokes to keep things interesting. Slows down the class to cater to the idiot business school kids.
Reeaaallly tough course for freshman year (coming from someone who loves econ) but he's a good teacher and just cuz he makes you work for the grade isn't a bad thing. Don't take him if you really hate the subject and know you'll never use it. But can be enjoyable and enriching otherwise. Plus his personality is hilarious.
A really condesending personality, and leaps across around the class room, drinks way too much water and his TAsdont know anything. DO NOT TAKE HIM aplia has nothing to do with test, and final is 50 % of grade Very hard class, he would never finish a lecture and would always be playing catch up!!
Im not a freshman and have taken other econ classes. Take my advice, DON'T take his class. He sends about 7 emails a week, dances around and the TAs are sophomores. He says he gives a hard final to find out who the "geniuses" are and its impossible! I actually started laughing/crying 20 minutes into it and wrote only random things/graphs
i'm pretty surprised by the ratings here. i think the lectures are pretty helpful - although the tas are sometimes rather lost. literally half ot the problems on the midterm were on our review sheet (w/answers handed out as well.) i have never had to read the textbook at all, and have an A in the class. however, i am a math person and enjoy eco
He very clearly explains everything, making it relevant to the 'real world.' He's funny and smart and extremely willing to help you out. His TA's are pretty decent. Aplia is helpful in understanding basic concepts, though irrelevant to exams. Exercises/exams are fairly simple if you pay any attention in class.
Schwartz isn't as bad as some people say; his class is hard, as is all econ, but doable. He only gives one midterm, compared to Levinson's two midterms. Class can be amusing. TAs are USELESS and I regretted the 50 minutes of my life I lost by going to recitation. Final is impossible, so make sure to study for it. Don't skip his class.
Very difficult class. Would not reccomend at all for people who are not good at math, specifically thinking geometrically. Lectures are very confusing, and while you can get by on the Midterm, the final is pretty scary.
While it's difficult to get an A in Schwartz's class, it's really not difficult to pull off a B. He's an amiable guy, always in a good mood and he makes the class light and at times humorous. He's really good at posting lecture outlines online before class which REALLY helps. Recitation helpfulness depends on TAs, some of which are USELESS!
He tries to get students to pass. He is really working for the students and tells lots of interesting anecdotes that keep class fun and invigorated.
He is a great prof. who makes attending lecture a joy for those interested in economics. He is very funny, and his animation is priceless. You will get used to a lot of movement from him during the lecture. His tests are difficult, but he goes over every type of problem you will face in class. The TA I had was a waste of my time. Take him.
If you have never taken econ before you will most likely die in this class, but Schwartz himself is hilarious. He treats the front of the room like a stage and basically dances around the board. Don't buy the book; it won't help you for his exams. Just take meticulous notes in lecture. Go to office hours. He gives all the answers to assignments.
His midterm and final don't reflect what is taught in class and he is very difficult to understand. He makes things frustratingly complicated and the practice aplia assignments don't help any. Micro-Econ shouldnt be this hard, but if you take him, prepare to do a lot of work by yourself or with other people. This is not an easy A (or B for some)

Frustration- that's the only thing i feel right now after just checking my grade. I had an A- on aplia and problem sets (25%), A- on midterm (25%). Went into the final (50%) feeling pretty good about the material, left feeling like i had gotten hit by a truck. Final grade: B-. similar stories from friends in the same class. ****.
to the person below.. ia gree. i had an A goign into the finall.. and i ended up with a B-. this class sucks
THis class was ok, but it sucks grade-wise. I went in with a solid A with the midterm, and came out with a B+ after the final. Final is the most difficult, and most rediculous, test I've ever seen.
Professor Schwartz has really amusing mannerisms but teaches an "upper-level" Microeconomics. Weekly Aplia quizzes take awhile; there are three exercises that the tutors go over. The mid-term is exactly like the practice, very straightforward. Make sure you know your stuff for the final. Grades are on a bell curve so it really is not that bad.
Study the Practice Midterm for the Midterm and study the first exercise. The final is ridiculous. You will fail, but there is a fairly significant curve. The best way to protect your grade is to make sure that everything is high (grade-wise) going into the final. He is not a very good teacher, though he certainly knows economics. Book is worthless.
Midterm - ok. Final - impossible. Curve - Ridiculous. Lectures - terribly boring. Assignments - few, hard, work in groups. I learned little, and probably got an F on the final with a B+ in the rest of the course. Came out with a B- for the semester. Shouldn't complain because I slept through or missed many lectures. Schwartz' mannerisms - hilarious
Very, very difficult. I've had 2.5 years of econ and I still got a B. The exercises, midterm, and Aplia assignments are all very easy, but the final is a **** (apparently...it's not like we get them back). Very mathematical treatment to the subject...a great course for prospective econ majors.
The problem lots of people had with the final was that it really requires you to think and understand the stuff. Exercises and Aplia were lots of regurgitation, whereas the final really required you to understand and know how to apply it. This course was a LOT easier because I took economics in high school.
Go to tutoring; they'll give you most of the answers for the problem sets. Some answers will be wrong, but better than what you'd get on your own. Study for final (and midterm) off sample final and homework, NOT Aplia. Shop around for TAs until you get a great one; a good TA will save your life.
Schwartz is ridiculously condescending and somehow manages to never actually teach anything throughout the course. He flies through lectures, doesn't provide good examples of the material, and doesn't adequately answer questions. Aplia questions are easy, and collaborate on the exercises. Midterm isn't bad, but the final is completely absurd.
This was a waste of a class. The midterm is straight from the review packet and then the final is from left field. He thinks it is his job to discover who should be an econ major instead of actually teaching the class. I had a genuine interest in econ and got a B- because I taught myself. You learn more at a community college.
Disastrous! His explanations were not clear at all. TA's were not much help either. The midterm is exactly like the sample, yet the final was the most outrageous thing. Lectures will help but if one wants to do well one must also seek a lot of outside help for this course!
Schwartz is really not as bad as everyone says he is. Midterm came straight from the practice test and the homework, and aplia was a joke. I personally didn't think the final was that bad, but I actually enjoy econ. I admit, his approach to economics is heavily math based. I would recommend for econ majors, but maybe not for non-econ/math people.
This class is not very difficult, and there is almost no homework. You don't use the text book so I would reccomend not buying it.
This class is genuinely interesting, and Schwartz does a great job of providing real-world examples of economic concepts. He covers a great deal of material with clarity. Although you learn a great deal, the class is not difficult. Unlike some of the previous raters, I had an “A” going into the final and came out with an “A.”
A bright economist and personable guy, but has little interest in teaching an intro class like Micro Principles. Assigned reading has almost nothing to do with graded events in the class, despite the fact that you will learn from it. If copying down carelessly drawn chalk graphs and regurgitating them on exams appeals to you, take this class.
Lectures are actually not that bad although a bit hard to follow, always moving around the room so you stay awake. Hw a bit difficult, Aplia fine but useless. Midterm off the hw, Final not so much.
The midterm is straight from the sample exam and problem sets, the final is hard. For problem sets, ask the TAs, they're usually helpful.
I luckily come out with one of the better grades in his class, but his final truly comes from left field. It makes no sense and, while his accent is very entertaining, his final is ridiculous and fifty percent of your grade. TAKE YUN! If you can't get him, wait to take this class or take it over the summer at home.
Utterly incomprehensible, class is straight forward except that the final is impossible. TA's are horrible. Doesn't help students. Don't take him.
Schwartz packs too many concepts into his lectures, especially towards the end of the semester. He is also extremely unhelpful and refuses to go over anything but the main points during office hours. The final, however, tests you on most concepts and is ridiculously challenging. Avoid Micro with Schwartz.
Schwartz's lectures are very hard to follow...he bounces around a lot of ideas and tries to cram a lot into one lecture...the exercise packets are not that hard, especially if you look back on notes, or ask TAs...overall, I would avoid this guy...try levinson, i've heard he's a little better
AWEFULAWEFULAWEFUL. Ruined my GPA. DO NOT TAKE!!! At all costs. This guy is soooo hard, and all of the stuff you are required to learn will not help you on the tests or exercises because it is literally all application, no theory whatsoever. Even if you love Econ, and are insanely good at it, you will not get a good grade. AVG final score was 32%.
Schwartz is a great guy and a great prof to boot. He knows everything there is to know about antitrust economics and I.O., and it shows in his lectures. Tests are difficult, but homeworks are doable. Study hard and show some interest, and you should be good. Take Schwartz if you're a major! Avoid him otherwise ...
Average Professor... Midterm is straight from practice exam and homework is ok especially since he takes your top three out of five grades... but the final exam IS ACTUALLY THE ANTICHRIST... take ANY other econ professor... it is NOT worth going through the hell of his final
The midterm was straight from the sample packet and the exercises... i did not know this until after the midterm... got 32% --- it was barely a D- with the curve... the spread was 98%-15%. You should do all exercises so then you will know what sort of problems to expect on the final.....well.. until you see the final. it will be your worst test eve
the final was hell... but then somehow i passed even though i wrote random numbers
The exercises were easier, as was the midterm, but even though I studied a lot, I felt completely unprepared to take the final. The final was very difficult, especially because of its length and multiple parts to every question. Would avoid him if at all possible.
Everyone whines and complains about this course but it turned out alright really. I happen to like his lectures and yes, I had a great TA, but MS makes sure u get all the exercise help u want anyways.... his midterm was ok and his final is known as the scariest thing ever.... its true but if u study ur ass off it wont kill ur grade too much
Love Marius as a man, not so much as a professor. Tough to understand his style of teaching. Final is tough but because it is on a curve should not kill you as much as below posts claim. Make sure to get the exercises perfect this will bring up your grade and study the concepts rather than trying to memorize applications and final is fine.
Unless you're an economics genius, don't hope to do well in this class. If you have some math background it helps, but this is the only class I didn't get an A in this semester, I got a B-. The final killed my B+ average, and I did study for it. He gets angry if you ask questions. Good luck if you're stuck with this course.
Micro was a weird class...I felt totally lost, but no work and I did fine. Schwartz is likeable; he loves his subject and is charismatic and funny. It's still hard to stay awake in lecture. Don't buy the book. Go to class. Exercises are graded tough; check answers at recitation/tutoring. Midterm's not too bad, EXACTLY like exer.'s and sample.
I felt lost through much of the course, still landed up with an A. Advice if you have Schwartz for micro? Attend lectures. Study regularly. Do the exercises ON YOUR OWN and not in a group. My TA was pretty useless (awesome guy, but useless TA) so you're basically on your own. It's not as bad as others make it out to be -work some, and you'll be ok.
The final's not as hard as some people seem to think, and I was really bad in class. Definitely go to lecture--he's funny, and it will help you on the exam. Also go to the tutoring sessions after you've done the exercises because the TAs will explain everything.
Marius Schwartz is obviously a brilliant economist but is unclear, unhelpful, and sometimes downright rude. I did all the homework and ultimately did fine in the class but that was only after attending every class and not understanding and then finally studying over 20 hours in one week for the final. Take Levinson if you can!
Be warned: this class is tough! Go to lecture- Schwartz actually explains Micro pretty well. Do all the problem sets (they WILL help for the midterm and final) and utilize your TA's and Schwartz's office hours and review sessions. Overall, you WILL learn your stuff if you take this class, just be prepared to work. I recommend it!
Nice Guy, confusing lecturer. You don't have to go to class, or even buy the book, just study his lecture outlines (which make more sense than he does) carefully and make sure you can draw the graphs.Do the problem sets, the Midterm is exactly like the sample exam, and know Lemon's Law really well for the Final.
I had him for an upper level class and really liked his approach. We learned and then got to decide whether to take a final or write a paper.
Worst Econ professor I've ever had. He is confusing and hard to follow. He asks the class if anyone understands, pauses awkwardly as he is greeted with blank, bewildered stares, and yet continues to move along. For your own good, take Levinson or Jun (Yun?.) The average on the final for Schwartz? 96...out of 200.
Professor Schwartz is amazing! I took microecon with him and i've learned a lot! It's not true u have to be an econ genius to pass his class, I had never ever taken economics before and ended up with a very good grade. If u want a good grade go to every class (and pay attention, sleeping does not count) and study! good luck
Prof. Schwartz is really awesome. He definitely knows what he's doing, and he explains micro really well. You have to go to class, pay attention, do the homework, AND study, but since when as this been unreasonable for a CLASS you're taking in COLLEGE? He's great, I definitely recommend him.
Not that tough; if you read over the handouts and go to the review sessions you can do well without really going to class. Hard to get an A-/A though.
his tests are much more specific than his lectures...you really need to closely study everythingg in the outlines...class does have a good curve though, so your grades dont end up being as scary as they first seem...definitely be ready to work hard
Underrated.
Not nearly as bad as people make him out to be. Go to lecture, study before the tests, and go to his office hours if you need help on the exercises and you'll do fine
Economics can be a very hard subject to grasp, and many people unfairly blame econ professors for the difficulty. A teacher can only do so much. Prof. Schwartz is really all you could ask for: well-organized, fair, clear, and a energetic and interesting lecturer. That doesn't guarantee you'll do well, but be fair: he's a very good teacher.
If you are only vaguely interested in Econ, stay away. He's absolutely brilliant and a funny and engaging lecturer but his class requires an inordinate amount of work. Overzealous freshmen and suck-ups will thrive in this course, so if that describes you, sign up!
Do not buy textbook, just go to class. Tests and homework are fairly difficult, but curve is in your favor. Very knowledgeable, heavy accent, sometimes boring lecturer, but good in-depth exploration of the subject. His mannerisms are hilarious...
avoid if possible
SPARE YOURSELF A HEADACHE AND DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR SCHWARTZ. If you have no prior experience with economics, you will have a terribly difficult time understanding him. I'm retaking Microeconomics now with a different teacher who is SO MUCH CLEARER and actually COMPREHENSIBLE. I wish I had listened to what everyone told me: DO NOT TAKE SCHWARTZ!!!
Schwartz is a smart man who is unable to explain introductory economics. If you have not taken Economics before then you will be owned by this class. To pass you will have to teach yourself from the textbook and then attend every lecture to translate econ into the Schwartz-speak the exams are written in.
Schwartz is very underrated - I would HIGHLY recommend this professor and I hadn't had ANY econ classes before this. He is interesting, explains economic concepts better than any other teacher I've had. Go to class, do the homework, ask him questions, and you will get a good grade. Schwartz is wonderful!
Before Professor Schwartz, I had no interest in economics, and now it is my major. While it might take a little bit to catch on to his particular style, he is consistent, clear, and fair with exam material and grading. Plus, he acts out graphs bodily and dances/pelvic thrusts during lectures, and I mean what else could you want?
Very boring, hard to pay attention and curve is ridiculous which shows difficulty of class. Take a different prof
He doesn't make you buy a textbook. His tests are exactly like the practices he gives you. He is not nearly as hard as everyone says. You are subject to a curve anyways so you might as well choose a professor who wills ave you so me money!
Professor Schwartz is a good professor, but his talents are best suited to teaching higher level economics. He makes complex topics very clear, is willing to slow down and answer questions, and his teach-by-dancing style will keep you awake, even at 8:50 am. However, he is tough, and his midterms can be brutal. If you like economics, take him.
Professor Schwartz gets a bad rap. He is definitely better teaching higher level econ courses, but he genuinely wants his students to understand the material. As an econ major, I thought he was great in Int Micro. DO THE HOMEWORK EXERCISES AND KNOW THEM WELL FOR THE EXAMS.
Don't take this class!
Professor Schwartz's upper level classes have been two of the best I've taken at Georgetown. They are challenging but he is also a fair grader and will give you as much help as you want. He actually worked in the field always keeps things interesting with personal stories and examples. Highly recommended.
Great professor!! Sometimes a little hard to follow in class but offers tons of help outside of class. Go to office hours with any questions and you'll love econ and do well! Extremely nice and funny too
Very effective educator. If you have trouble following, he puts the outlines online. Extremely accessible, with review sessions and extra office hours before exams. This class's material is maybe medium difficulty so he makes his tests the same. He tries so hard to explain he even uses his hips while talking. Passionate, funny, sincere professor.
Very unclear and disorganized. Lecture outlines are helpful, but when it comes down to it, he makes concepts that should not be tough, so confusing. barely any practice problems or application. He is a nice guy, but not a good teacher
Don't be discouraged by the comments below. Professor Schwartz is clear in his lectures and genuinely wants you to understand the subject/do well. He is very available to offer extra help and responds to email questions in light speed. Do the homework exercises and you'll be fine for the exams.
Great professor! Anything that is confusing in class can easily be cleared up in the tons of office hours and review sessions that he offers that are so helpful! Very nice and very funny
Really really really hard class. Class would be way better if he didn't cover all of the material so hastily! He is a really smart man and knows his stuff and is overall nice, but boy his tests and homework sets are soooo hard! Lectures can be really sleep-inducing. If you take the class in the morning - bring coffee!!!
Tests are impossible. Homeworks are also hard and very time-consuming! He lectures very quickly and is very perturbed when people ask questions in class.
Schwartz is great if you have to take Int. Micro. Yes, it's hard but if you are taking upper level econ there really isn't an easy way out. Weekly exercises are manageable. The exams are rough but there is a heavy curve so in the end the grades are not bad. Schwartz is a nice guy and a good professor.
Professor Schwartz is really good. The class itself isn't easy, but he makes it manageable for sure. He's helpful at office hours and very fair on tests. A good teacher to take for int. micro.
A very rewarding and interesting class. The material is difficult but Prof. Schwartz is remarkably helpful during office hours. He is an expert in the field and his passion for teaching the course really shows.
definitely more suited to upper level classes. If you're interested in Industrial Organization or competition, he's the right prof with a wealth of experience in the FCCDOJ. His handwritten notes for higher level classes aren't intuitively clear so go for the classes. I got on fine with just the notes for ECON 101 but needed the lectures for 461.
Really good guy who is probably the smartest econ professor I've had at Georgetown. It's not an easy class but if you put in the work, you will be fine. Highly recommend... industrial org is a fascinating subject!
I personally liked him as a teacher. Yes, the class is hard, get used to it. I think he does a great job of laying the foundation and expecting you to make the extra step. Probably your best bet for Intermediate Microeconomics. Attendance is absolutely a must, if you miss one lecture it'll take a lot of time to catch up!
Great class, very difficult but really interesting if into micro/IO. No textbook, go to class. Generally clear, but material difficult so hard to follow if not current. Review material outside class to prepare. Very tough tests, but 70% A. Extremely helpful in O.H. Contagious energy. Fun mock trials. Real world relevant. Loved it.
Professor Schwartz is probably the best professor in the econ department. Yes, antitrust law and regulation is not the most exciting thing. But the guy is so animated and helpful that you'll get through it. Real solid class if you can get it. The exams are hard for everyone so thank you econ curve.
If you're taking intermediate micro, Schwartz is the guy. His expectations are extremely clear. Sure, the material is hard, but if you really take the time to get ready for the lectures, pay attention, and understand the exercises, you will invariably get an A. I cannot stress enough the lecture outlines' importance.
I really enjoyed Prof. Schwartz. He's a renowned economist and a great lecturer--not always a common combo. The tests are hard, but the curve is a life saver.
Totally awful. Mostly, he is just overly detailed. It seems he is mostly in covering material rather than teaching. His wastes half an hour and 10 slides on cases that could be summarized in 10 lines. A bore lecturer who consistently misses the important points.
Schwartz is one of the best teachers in the Econ department. As a senior econ major, this is the only econ class I have been engaged in. Schwartz dances all throughout class and knows so much. While the class is not easy, it is very manageable and he is a really great teacher. Highly recommend him over the typical 400s. No textbook though.
No respect for students time. Goes overtime in a 2.5 hour class every single week, schedules exams on non-class days, and requires meetings outside class. Avoid
The class material is v challenging, but Prof. Schwartz makes it understandable. If I did not attend class I would've failed, because his explanations during lectures were crucial. He dances around sometimes which is odd, but he's a really nice guy that cares if his students are learning. The curve is a godsend, so overall not bad! Would recommend.
It was definitely a really really hard class but in the end, I got a good grade (thxs econ curve). Questions on exams can be tedious and random at times but the final was relatively straightforward. Don't really have to work constantly (just midterms and finals, and 9 exercises (3 don't count)).
Marius is an engaging, funny lecturer and this class isn't as hard as everyone says. There isn't a lot of practice for the exams, but if you really understand the few problem sets you have, you'll do well on them. Not that hard to get an A with the curve. Would take again.
Easily the best professor I have had at Georgetown. Engaging lecturer, cares about students and wants students to succeed. A highly respected economist and passionate about the field. Class avg for exams is 65% because material is difficult, but econ curve obviously helps. Cannot recommend enough
Marius is the best choice for intermediate micro. He is SO funny- he always throws jokes in class and keeps everyone entertained. The class is gonna be hard no matter who you take it with. Prof. Schwartz is the only econ prof that I've ever liked and felt like I actually understood the material. Would highly recommend.
An excellent professor and a great choice. He is extraordinarily engaging and also will go out of his way to help you in office hours or over email. You definitely want to know the shortcut equations going into the tests--the tests are too long to fully run through the models to answer questions.
Great lecturer-can keep you engaged with tough economic theory even before 10am and he is funny, sometimes on purpose. The class will probably be your hardest econ so far but it's still doable if you put in the effort. Review exercises before tests-the questions are similar. Available in office hours. Would definitely take again.
I've taken Prof. Schwartz's course for three semesters now (Micro/Topics/IO). IO was the worst of those three. The course was structured poorly, lectures were convoluted, and as with all his courses, there was little means of preparation for the exams. Unfortunately, he's the only professor at Georgetown that teaches in the antitrust space.
Professor Schwartz's IO461 class was a very good class. While his lectures and problem sets are challenging, he is very helpful in office hours to guide you through the material. Overall, he is super smart and makes his IO class (essentially the foundations of Antitrust) interesting & engaging. Go to office hours ahead of HW and tests!
Professor Schwartz is an engaging lecturer who really knows the material like the back of his hand. Funny guy too. IO is a good class especially if you like antitrust stuff, but you will have to put in the work for the midterm, final, and mock trial. Would recommend.
The topics covered in class are interesting. Doesn't help that it's really early in the morning when everyone is tired. There's a lot of content covered and there are given print-outs, but no lecture slides so you need to go to class. People do horible on the exams, so you don't need to do well to get a good grade.
Professor Schwartz and his Topics class are very fun. His exams are tough but he curves them a lot. I thought the classes were generally interesting, but it was hard to pay attention for the entire time. He expects you to attend office hours and constantly confirm with him that you understand.
Great professor, makes learning tedious microeconomics somewhat more enjoyable. His hips don't lie.
Professor Schwartz is arguably the best professor in Georgetown's economics department. His IO course is difficult, but he is accessible outside the classroom during office hours. He breaks down rigorous homework problems and complicated topics in ways that are easy to understand. Above all else, he is caring and committed to his students.
good professor, really accessible outside of class -- the class material is still hard but he is not the reason
Tough class with Schwartz, but he explained things well and used real-world examples (articles) that connected class material to the actual economy. His exams were super hard, needed lots of studying, but he was always there to help outside class. Grading was just on problem sets and exams. Overall a great prof - you just need to put in the effort
Schwartz is amazing, my favorite econ professor at Georgetown - in class, he peppers in anecdotes to make things interesting, often from his firsthand antitrust experience. He is extremely helpful in office hours, and just wants you to put in the work. IO is very challenging, but it's graded on the econ curve - meaning the grades are fine.
It's a shame that Professor Schwartz is retiring. He is by far the most accessible and caring professor in the economics department. He is also a first-generation scholar, so he is extra supportive of FGLI students. He is an engaging and inspiring lecture, and his quips keep the class alive. He will truly be missed by Georgetown!
Professor Schwartz keeps you engaged with his humor and clear explanations, even in the tough econ material. While the workload is high, using unstuck AI and review exercises can help you ace the class.
