Very energetic and willing to help you whenever you have time. Tries to explain things clearly using clever analogies but is self concious about her accent being too strong. Not too hard to understand her. Great teacher, makes calculus a little easier to handle.
i love her!! very good instructor!she has this strong ukranian accent that she kept on bothering about!she's really fun! and she makes these "dance moves" during class everytime she explains stuff! she always say that "learning should come both ways. I teach you math, you teach me english!!" oh fun!!i really like her!! and i highly recommend her!
Great teacher, the accent is tough for a little while but you don't even notice it after about a week. If you show her that you want to learn, you will do well.
I would not reccomend this proff, because of the language barrior and her inability to teach the material in a helpful fashion. She does put in the time with her students but lacks the ability to aducuatly relay the informaiton. Digby is a much better choice for this class.
Disregard any negative comments about this prof. She is by far the best teacher i have ever had. She is demanding but conscientious and helpfull, she really knows how to teach unlike the other math profs
Experienced and pretty mathematician. Mariya is great! Best math teacher. I feel smart in the class!!!
Best prof I have. She has a passion for math and is always willing to help you out. She also explains things in a way that makes them seem so easy. Her accent throws you off at first but after a bit you don't even notice anymore.
Amazing teacher. She is the best. She is more of a friend than a teacher. A great indiviual. Always take her if u get a chance too. Really hardworking and dedicated to her profession. Thanks Maria for being a wonderful person.
Mariya is a wonderful prof and a very nice lady. I highly recommend her.
Great prof
Very knowledgable and approachable.
Best math teacher I've ever had!! She cares so much about how the students do, and tries her best to make sure everyone understands the material. She's so funny and uses the best analogies so the material makes more sense. I would highly recommend her for any math class. =)
Wonderful prof, very dedicated to her students! Extremely knowledgeable! Has possibly some of the greatest math analogies I have ever heard. I really appreciate that she focuses more on the why then the simple how of math!
STAY AWAY FROM HER. if you ask her a question, she will get mad at you beacuse she thinks that your questioning her teaching. She is rude and has a strong accent. I wouldnt recommend her to anyone
Yes... she seems to care about her students but her teaching is backward and she assumes we have knowledge that we do not yet posess. She yells at the class for asking questions and does not explain in detail, if at all, new concepts. She is kind and reasonable but not a great teacher.

thanks maria you are the best
She is a great teacher. If you can take Calc with her, do it. She does all she can to make sure her students do well. She's a cutie too. I love her Polish accent.
I?ve taken my calc course with Maria. Now I am in her 3307 class. She is such a good teacher! She explain everything you ask. Go to see her during her OH. She knows how to make everything understandable for students. I am blessed to have her as my instructor again.
Many students recommend Digby Smith for this course. Having had the pleasure of discourse with Digby, i would still recommend Mariya. She has a strong accent that is hard to get used to, and she does frustrate rather easily, but she is by far the best Calculus teacher you could have. She makes great use of her office hours, and always helps. A+++
BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD PERIOD. Yes she kinda raises her voice at you, but it's just because she has a passion for what she teaches. She makes you love the subject along with her and shows you a new style of thinking that makes math in all areas EASIER! Cannot praise this teacher enough! Just go with it, and you'll see why she's so good!
I am convinced that no matter whom you take calculus with, it will suck. However, I am willing to bet that Maria's class sucked less than most. She seemed to explain concepts as well as possible, and seemed cheery and approachable. I will look forward to having her again .
This woman is such a nice lady, she is awesome. Yes, she does have a thick accent and does get a little hyper but it's only because she is super passionate about mathematics, and really cares about her students and their success. If you find her accent hard to understand just go talk to her in office hours I guarantee she will make you understand.
I would give this prof the highest score ever! Highly recommend her! You will not regret.
Respect, madam! The smartest women at MRU.I like her calculus (souds funny, ha?)
THANKS MARIYA
Mariya... She is such an intelligent, talented and nice lady!!Calculus with her is extremely interesting! If you can take calc with her, go for it. She is so helpful and she truly cares..Thank you Mariya!!!
lol... she can be very funny but she is very driven n dedictaed! she is willing to push you till you get it, very strict thou.. which made me get an A+ on a midterm... she might seem hard n diffivult @ first but trust me if you stick with her you would not have any regrets!
Mariya has very interesting ways of teaching calc, she shows you the "slow american way" and then she shows you the fast ukrainian ways to do calc. She really cares about her student's success so she will push you to keep up with the course. Do your recommended problems, because her tests are very similar.
Mariya was one of my best math professors - ever. I haven't taken Math 30 for four years, and attempted calculus two years ago (I had to drop out). With Mariya, calculus was crystal clear, and with regular homework I ended up getting an A+. Also, when you think she is yelling, she probably isn't. Mariya really just wants you to succeed.
AMAZING TEACHER! I have completed both 1217 and 1219 with her and highly recommend her. She is smart and strict, kicks your butt into gear. I have moved on to the U of C now but I am currently trying to get my differential class with her, almost stayed just to finish calculus with her. Take her if you can!
I cant say enough good things about Mariya. She genuinely wants her students to do well and shell push you until you get there. Shes funny and intelligent which really engages the class. if you have to take calculus take it from Mariya!!
I overly critical of north am. teaching methods, refuses to approach math the "spoonfed n american way". Good if one is pursuing phd in maths, but not if this is only a req'd course for a degree.
I guess I know that looser from the previous chat. He couldn?t do any math at all and will fail the course ?that?s for sure. But if you are a looser why blaming anybody else? Maria is a super teacher , she's smart, she wanted her students to understand calc and I deeply appreciate this.
High recommendation for someone going into math field, but not the ideal course if you just want to fill the requirement as she demands absolute understanding in concepts. Keep up with homework list, and pre-Cal will really save a lot of time. No issue with her Ukrainian accent. Awkward moments here and there, but good prof. Study for 2nd midterm!
Work hard, ask questions, be patient with responses. She cares. Don't let style get in the way of someone who will go out of her way to help you. Did I mention work hard?
Mariya is the most amazing math prof you will have at mru. She really cares about you as a student. She may be difficult to understand in the classroom at times but definitely makes up for it if you seek extra help outside of class. I've taken math 1217, 1219, and 3307 all with Mariya and achieved A's in all 3, she's the absolute best!
Mariya is a good prof in the sense you'll learn your material well, but she is a ridiculously hard marker and is a bit difficult to understand. It's also awkward to ask her questions as she it a bit blunt and will basically call you stupid. Bottom line, I wouldn't take another class with her.
Extremely good prof. TAKE HER! Don't be intimidated by first impressions because she is tough and might inadvertently make you feel stupid but don't let that get to you. She teaches very clearly even with her strong accent.Do all the homework and show up to class. Work hard and with her you will for sure get an A! You can tell she cares about you.
Amazing teacher. I have always disliked and struggled with math but I managed to really enjoy this class and even got an A! This teacher is tough but really wants you to do well, and will help you get there. Highly recommend!
She would be a good prof if one has a good firm grasp on mathematics or want a degree in math/engin. She wants you to succeed but views her goals more important than yours. For her tests she picks the hardest questions and uses many, if you make a mistake or dont study enough you wont finish her tests. Dont get her if yo have learning disabilities.
It looks like I am taking the same math1200 course. Her tests are not as difficult I really appreciate her notes if you go through and pay attention to her lecture you will understand the subject. I would recommend her ! Very professional and helpful prof
Mariya is an amazing teacher! She is always there to help and really wants you to succeed! Her lectures are great and easy to understand.
If you're not lazy/have low standards for yourself/hates trying at anything, Mariya is the most excellent teacher one can hope for! I have learned more about mathematics and how everything fits together, than I ever have from any teacher. She's just an avid believer in tough love, but don't let that discourage you!
Mariya is an amazing prof! She will do anything she can to ensure her students succeed, and she is always ready to help. All you have to do is ask. She undertands that Math is not for everyone, and she tells stories about how she was not born with all the knowledge of Math. If you do your part, you will succeed, and she will help you do it
Mariya is a great professor if you understand two things. First, she is going to ride your ass about homework, and two, she is absolutely out to make sure you succeed. She will come off as a tad arrogant and uncaring but she is in truth deeply caring about your success. Would absolutely recommend, and her accent is easily worked through.
Hello, Today was my first day in her class and it was better then i expected however her accent gets in the way of understanding some things. ill update it end of the term.
Mariya is such a nice teacher and for those who mention her accent, I think it only makes the class better. She is very helpful, if you ask for help she will sit down with and do her. She is also very sweet when you are person to person with her. I have been avoiding math courses for years but not anymore with her. She makes math enjoyable.
Very tough course throughout the year, very doable if you do you homework. Her lectures are fun, but busy. She provides tons of help to her students and really does a good job teaching.
Amazing teacher! Take her if you get the chance! A great person and a great teacher!
Maryia is an awesome professor! I would highly recommend choosing her since she tries her best to explain the course material to the class. She made me like math. I believe she does her job 100% during the class but if you want to succeed, you should make sure that you do the homework as often and as much as it is possible.
Very smart mathematician but FAST lecturer. When asked for clarification, sometimes yells at class in exasperation though she will answer the question. You'll need to do LOTS of studying on your own time to succeed... she teaches at a fast pace and I found her to not be very approachable for help especially during lectures. Though she's fair grader
Mariya taught me so much more than calculus. She seems rude and mean the first few lectures, but just tough it out, she will show you how much she really cares if you stick with her. Her sections always average 10% higher on final exams than other profs, however it's not an easy road to get there.
Love Mariya, amazing professor, inspirational and kind. Always ready to help you succeed, doesnt like students who dont put the work in and dont try.
She is a great prof if you are wanting to go into a mathematical field of study sadly her class is a requirement for General Science , many people of which, myself included, have no need for any math beyond calculus 1. She grades fair but berates and disrespects in class when they ask for clarification. Aspiring Newton take her class, otherwise run
She's really kind and really wants you to understand the material which is great but she doesn't allow calculators. Her tests are fair but the course itself is really difficult. You have to get the textbook and do practise questions. If your planning on taking this class with her try taking it with easier classes on the side.
Mariya destroyed my fear of math & forced me to be logical and calm. Ask for help, go to tutorials & the help room, & talk to her. She's sharp, inspiring, determined, & intelligent. VERY fast-paced lectures, but very structured & awesome notes. Can come across as rude, but DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY! She's like a tough trainer at the gym, haha!
When you take a class by Mariya, get ready to jump right in. Also, be prepared to be called out for your errors. It's not nearly as bad as it sounds; Mariya thinks of her students as her children. She knows how to motivate, and she cares A LOT! And she is ALWAYS willing to help you figure something out.
shes extremely fast paced and constantly skips over steps. when asked a question she gets frustrated and tells you off. she has high expectations in terms of teaching yourself, she gives you one example for a whole concept and wants you to teach yourself all other applications. she is extremely smart but not a good prof and isnt very considerate.
Due to covid pushing all classes online, I would strongly recommend not taking any of he classes online or in person. She gets easily frustrated during lecture and if you have any questions she calls you out for not understanding. You must do your calculations that way she showed you or she will make the question wrong.
when I ask her questions she gets mad but they should not I pay for this class and I get the worst teaching ever sometimes learning on youtube is better and easier but you won't get credits instead you have to pay 1k to learn this with the worst teaching professor ever hope mount royal does a better job in hiring cause online classes are hard
I was anxious and terrified in her class in person. She yelled and made students feel terrible about not understanding something the first time. It's hard to learn math when someone is screaming at you, I realized this after I took her class and learned nothing. I then took the same class from a different prof and got an A+.
Mariya is an aggressive teacher. She often gets mad at students for asking questions and speaks in a degrading manner towards them. When teaching online lectures she makes frequent simple mistakes and skips steps expecting students to already know what they are doing. She may be a good teacher in person, I don't know. But online is not for her.
Mariya is hands down one of the nicest professors at all of mru. She cares incredibly about her student's well-being and academic success often stopping constantly to ensure everyone is caught up. She also offers review sessions right before each term test to ensure everyone is good to go. If given the chance I would immediately take her again.
Mariya comes off pretty aggressive at times but I think she doesn't mean it. She adjusts her pace throughout the course to make sure students are caught up and she spends extra time before the tests. Though She isn't very tech-savvy, her lectures are clear and anyone who pays attention and is well prepared is definitely going to be fine.
She is very rude at times and sometimes she can be nice. She calls on her students a lot and gets kind of annoyed when you ask questions. Her tests were fair game and sometimes she went too fast while teaching. But overall you get used to it and its not that bad
She does not assign problems and there is no textbook. Your only resource is her poorly written notes. Her rubric doesn't include dates or deliverables. Avoid!
Does not fully explain topics, frequently skips steps, and will give you 10 questions with multiple parts each on a 1 hour test. Easily the worst prof I have ever had. Will also waste up to 10 minutes of each class asking to see someone's face or for someone to say anything. Do not take if online.
She expects you to give drawn out explanations for 1 hour tests, but will not go into detail on how to answer such questions in class. her notes have errors in order for you to pay attention during class, but goes 50 miles per hour and will get angry if you don't understand. Practice questions also don't reflect the test, so get ready somehow?
Taking her online course. Very reluctant to record. Lectures are very fast but dont like you to ask any questions. When you ask her to slow down, she will reject you for various reasons
I've had her on my MATH1200 before and I can say that she really improved a lot. She takes her student's feedbacks about her teaching style very seriously and tries to improve her lectures. You'll have to adjust to her lectures first but once you got a hang of it, you'll be fine. We had 3 midterms (15% each), wiley asgmts, and 2 blackboard asgmts.
stupidly fast, expects you to know things despite not teaching it... if you took math 30-1 only steer clear from her, literally made me cry multiple times from frustration. this class took up all my study time(until i dropped) because she was bad at teaching/explaining things. she also is mean when answering questions which isn't encouraging at all
Hard to concentrate in her class as she's incoherent half the time. whenever you ask a question, she yells at you violently
She gives lots of homework for practice which is good because its the best way for you to understand the material, very kind outside of class and will help you with any difficult with topics and concepts. She treats her class like her children, she wants you to succeed, her teaching style isn't for everyone, once you get used to her style your good
I never felt so stupid. Get ready for demeaning comments when you do not understand. Thanks very much. That is all.
Beautiful character; wants her students to go above and beyond. If you're needing an in-depth exploration of calc, or someone that'll nurture you to grow and learn instead of simply and mindlessly pressing buttons on a TI-84, then take this class. Don't take it if you're soft. It's a hard course with a demanding teacher; do it if you want to learn.
Online, Mariya is ok. She has really nice handwriting which is good, but the course content is really hard, so you will struggle badly if you take this online. In person she is much better. She has very well structured lectures and very good writing, only bad thing I would say is she can be unpredictable, she gave us a reading week assignment.
Very intelligent but cannot teach properly
I withdrew from the class because her sheer speed was ungodly. But, if you can keep up with her, she is an excellent teacher who tries to teach you understanding. Her teaching style is a little aggressive and harsh at times. But I think if a more fast pace and aggressive teaching style is your thing, then she is an excellent teacher.
She constantly mentioned that this course was easier than Calculus 1, as someone who has already taken it, it's simply not true (At least with her!). I've never had a professor who continuously undermines students' efforts and questions the way she has and believes all of this is somehow intuitive to us. She's terrible but somewhat knowledgeable.
She goes through things very fast, and she will call out the class for not knowing anything, being bad at math, etc. Overall she is a good person who cares about her students, but if you are not good at math or don't like being made to feel stupid I would consider another prof. Her tests are easy if you know what you're doing.
Mariya is a fantastic teacher, she really goes beyond doing mindless calculations and teaches you how to think. She can come across pretty intimidatingly and her teaching style may not be for everyone, but if you put in the work and make an effort you will get a good grade.
Mariya is a nice professor but avoid taking her. She will call you out during lectures. She thinks that everyone in the class is a Math major. Her notes are good, however her midterms and finals are 10 times harder than her in-class example. She marks really hard on tests, it's either right or wrong kinda thing. Mylabs are amolst every week.
AVOID AVOID AVOID She is the worst. Will humiliate you if you ask a question and tell you that this is simple math instead of helping. She has no clear grading. I got a lower mark than my classmates even though we had the same thing. Her marking depends on her mood, and her tests are way harder than her lectures. She gives no part marks at all.
While Mariya does come off quite intimidating, she just cares for the classes education and is just doing it through some tough love. She does start picking on students who are capable but make many small mistakes, and imo in some cases is warranted. She's really improved my understanding of math and I have started to love it more because of her.
She's a brilliant mathematician but not the best teacher. She overcomplicates everything by breaking it down too much and showing all the proofs, which only adds confusion. She insists it's all basic math, but her explanations make it complex. I had to self-teach the whole course using Organic Chem Tutor. Avoid if possible.
She is very smart and rlly like her as a person but not everyone is meant to be a teacher. She cares about her students and yet her classes out of all the other math classes is the hardest one. If you want a good grade definitely not with her. Goodluck
Mariya is an excellent math professor. If you did Math 31 in High School this course will be easier for you since it covers most of the same content. Homework isn't marked but I highly recommend doing it all since she uses the homework questions in her tests. She cares about her students a lot with tough love. Would take again!
Honestly she is such a brilliant woman and such an amazing teacher, I would have never been able to learn this material without her
Mariya is genuinely the best university prof I have encountered. She is funny, she is personable and although she likes to nag at students she does it out of love. Her lectures were my favourite part of the day and although you have to put a lot of work into her classes to succeed, she truly knows what she is doing and is a brilliant teacher.
If you have a hard time with math, this is the prof for you. She may seem tough at first, but she only wants you to understand the concepts and she will take the time to explain it until you better understand. She teaches you to think mathematically, and not rely on just simple memorization. I never thought Id start to like math until this class.
Mariya is a great teacher. She has an accent but it's understandable. Her tests are very similar to homework problems so do your homework. She gives really good feedback on tests. She also really cares that you don't fill your mind with formulas but understand the concept, and you will succeed in the course.
Mariya is an incredible teacher. She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She teaches fast and there is lots of homework involved however if you're willing to dedicate your time to her you will succeed. I struggled so much with math and wouldn't ever imagine finishing with the grade I did but she was the sole reason I did!
shes honestly so rude and the only reason her ratings are high bc rmp keeps removing reviews. shes always yelling at students and is extremely rude. PLS DONT TAKE HER UR WASTING UR MONEY
Mrs Mariya starts the class by yelling and ends the class with yelling. Quizzes are done during every tutorial. You want to pass? do all the homework because the homework is mostly and always on the tests and quizzes and thats nice. Her tutorials consists of quizzes and group work. Her quizzes are 4-5 questions and she only gives you 3 minutes GL.
Svishchuk is a wonderful professor. If you want to actually learn math, this course is for you. It is difficult, but Mariya consistently offers help and will answer each and every question you may have. She grades pretty generously too. If you go to the lectures, do the assigned homework, and ask questions, you WILL ace the course. She's funny too.
guys shes deleting reviews more than 50% probably droppedthe class bc of how bad she is. i wish i saw her real reviews before taking her class
I didn't think I would like her at first, but she really is a kind instructor who genuinely wants everyone to do well. Her experience is clear, and she is quite engaging.
SHES S0 BAD STAY AWAY FROM HER UNLESS U WANNA FAIL all these students that like her are weird asf
