Piles on a whole lot of work. A whole lot. A bad choice if you aren't down with english, but if you have any interest in writing she's really supportive.
she says things once & either you get it or you dont... have to rely on other people in the class & Come to a consensus of what was meant when she said it. as long as you write half descent papers you'll do fine.

This class needs 2 W's. I have never had to write so much in my life. It requires so much work that I feel like I can only do my english homework. Forget about any other class.
She gives a ****load of ****in work. nice lady and good teacher just gives way too much work for people who are not at all interested in writing.

DO NOT TAKE HER! this lady is horrible! she makes ou write about all you inner thoughts and stuff...it is horrible...too much work for a 100 level class...
much to hard, by far the worst english course i have ever taken! She will grade you on how you grade/correct other peoples papers, this is good for someone becoming a teacher, but almost everyone in the class is not a education major. WARNING: AVOID HER
Do not take her. I hated her class, very boring and tests are hard. Lots of essays.
The class itself was rather easy, but her final was a b**ch. After the 2 hour time slot allotted, only 5 students were finished with it. The entire thing was essay, and required comparison and contrast of poems that have nothing to do with each other.
One of the best classes I ever took at LHU and I was sorry I didn't take it or others taught by Maddox-Haffer sooner. The class was interesting and really prepared me for the PRAXIS exam. If you are English Ed- take it! It is AWESOME! :)
Don't take this course with her, impossible amount of work and boring as anything. Don't do it to yourself, I wish I had known..
Too much like an INtroductory to Literature class. Hardly any useful time spent developing ones writing.
This lady is insane! she gives way too much work for basic comp. and expects everyone to write like her and you have to teach each other, she does nothin If you don't write the way she does, don't look for a good grade. My advice don't take her for comp!!
i consider myself hard working, creative and intelligent. i got an A in this this woman's class. But I'm Warning You - Do Not Take Her.
If you are serious about really learning -- great Professor!
She has very high expectations of her students. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone who cannot take a little bit of criticism. She can truly tear papers apart. I did very well in her class but I would honestly recommend taking someone else.
Prof. Maddox-Hafer is an exceptional teacher and talent! She is patient, understanding, and extremely helpful. She goes above and beyond what other professors do to help you. I wish that I had found her earlier in my college career! She is one of the best teachers at LHU!!

Go way to fast and sometimes very confusing
She is a cool person, but she treats us like we are 10 and i hate that!
I think she was a wonderful teacher, but if your not going to show up for class do not expect to pass... she knows who goes to class and who dosnt and she is willing to put forth effort for you if u do back.. i would say take her...she makes things interesting and i didnt like lit before her
Terrible Professor.**** is uninteresting with her. Graded my Essays really hard and I put some time in them. Do not take her avoid her at all costs.
class is a real pain in the butt. i hate it how she makes us critique other people's essays, and she real unclear about what is going on. if u take her make sure to look at your syllabise all the time
Professor Maddox-Hafer is an excellent teacher, who is incredibly enthusiastic when it comes to what she teaches. She makes you think and is very knowledgable about what she teaches. Her dedication and brillance makes her one of the best teachers not only at LHU, but one of the best I have encountered in my college career.
I've taken workshops with MMH for three semesters now, and I have enjoyed every single one. She is dedicated, knowledgeable, and supportive of all the students who are eager to face the challenge of learning and changing. With her guidance, I have grown as a student, a writer, and a person. She has made my years at LHU unforgettable; many thanks!
Professor Madox-Hafer really was a great teacher. She allowed us to expand the classroom ideas and discussions into group presented projects. Our input about every item that was brought up was incouraged. Exams, though lengthy, were clear and thought out. I really enjoyed the class and hope to have her again.
As a first semester freshman she was my best professor. The class isn't a cake walk but its not soupposed to be. She does everything she can to give you the best grade possible. Her syllabus tells you exactly whats due and when. Shes always willing to help, all you have to do is be a little grown up and go and talk to her. Im taking her again.
Professor Maddox-Hafer is a good teacher. She teaches you what you need to know and how to improve yourself as a writer. She cares about the students and wants them to do well in her class. As long as you look at the syllabus and come to class your grade should reflect that you did.
The class requires a lot of work, however professor Maddox is always willing to give extra help when you need it. Dont be afraid to go see her in her office!
I was very hesitant to take MMH's english course due to my lack of interest in the subject, but she really got me more motivated to write better papers. All of the work we did on revising has improved my writing skills tremendously!
I loved her class and she was alwasy willing to help with any problems
Professor Maddox Hafer is an extremely competent and insitefull professor. I would highly recommend her for any classes.
Highly recommended. With much encouragement, MMH managed to both reignite my interest in writing as well lead me in the right direction in order to improve my writing. I would strongly urge anyone with an interest in writing to take this workshop. Both competent and personable, I look forward to attend more of MMH's classes.
Dunno what to say but nice outfits!!!
Will take this one again.
Perhaps the most impressive professor i've met in LHUP. Highly recommended.
What a great professor, doesn't take attendance, but notices when you aren't there. Tries her best to get the class involved in everything. Wonderful lady, very helpful, lots of extra credit. Tests are hard, but it is college... a lot of out of class requirements though... but all in all a great prof!
MMH was an exellent professor she made learning easy and fun and interesting. I learned so much and had a great time. I would highly recommend this professor to anyone who wants to have fun while learning alot. She is one of my favorite professors of all time.
This was the poetry workshop. I felt like we got a whole ton of work and that a lot of it was simply busywork. Take this class if you have a lot of time to dedicate to it, or you're really good at making up stuff.
I love love loved her. She is super nice as long as you show her respect. There is kind of a lot of writing involved, but she is very fair in grading. I'd def take another class of hers
Prof. Maddox-Hafer is a great professor. She expects a lot out of her students, so be willing to put a bit of time into a 100 level course if you take her. She grades tough on quizzes but there's a lot of busy work to keep your grade up.
If you are not that great at writing then dont take this class. Some of the assigments are easy but she grades very hard.
Ridiculous amount of work for a gen ed class. 50 min class periods so it's next to impossible to finish the tests when you have to write a 2-3 page essay along with everything else.
she is extrememly helpful as long as you ask for it, shes very understanding and an all around sweet lady. you write a lot of essays but then again its a composition class, so dont expect anything other than that. I actually enjoyed it though :)
definately knows what shes talking about, but talks at an extremely high comprehensive level. if you're good at english, go for it. if you hate english, or hate coming to class, you won't like hers
she is a good teacher but study the vocab for the test's
Professor Maddox-Hafner is a great teacher to take for a writing class, if you want to learn quite a bit. Her classes are loaded with work, but it's worth it in the end. I recommend her if you want to gain quality to your writing.
I had your class for Composition in the spring of 2008. I just wanted to e-mail you to thank you for making me such a better writer than I ever could have imagined. I still have the St. Martin's Handbook, and I live by it. If I ever have any doubt in my mind about something grammar related or a citation, I just pull the book off the shelf.
Prof Maddox-Hafer was a wonderful Professor. She did everything to make the class more exciting, including bring in Authors. She was very fair on her quizes and tests, and very fair with her extra credit events. I enjoyed her class very much! ANyone intersted in writing will see that she loves what she does. I would recommend her class.
She is an awful professor. She treats her students like high school students and overanalyzes every piece of literature you read in class. For her exams, just write her opinion and you'll be fine. She has you attend outside of class "readings", which are just as boring as her class.
I had Professor Maddox-Hafer for ENGL110 and ENGL100 for a 2009 semester. I am pretty good at English, and now secondary english education is my major. I loved both classes, especially intro to lit. Both classes involve lots of work, especially Comp. She is an amazing teacher, and makes class so interesting. My favorite professor, by far.Take her!
good teacher, bad taste in literature.
She is not helpful at all. She doesn't teach in class. She just tells you to do in-class editing and edit each others' papers.
Dont read the comment below. I took her class and wasn't at all excited but I loved her. She's great at keeping the discussion going and making things interesting. A writer herself, she is very passionate about literature. She is kind and understanding and very helpful. A great teacher whom I would recommend to anyone and everyone.
She may be a very nice lady, but dont let that fool you. She gives tons and tons of unnecessary work. She treats this class as if it were your major, when it's only a gen ed requirement. Find another class if at all possible.
Bad teacher. Gave tons of 'busy' work, half the class didn't understand anything, and while she taught no one listened. She's very boring. Really was a waste. And her exams were terrible! She required so much work. Most of the class went to the exams 10 min early and left 30-40 min after the exam 'finished'.She treated the class as if it was yur major
She means well, but she gives so much busy work you're drowning in it. Expects you to love English as much as she does and gives a D2L post at least twice a week plus quizzes! Unnecessary amount of work! She is a nice woman, just not the best professor.
There are a lot of discussions on d2l and although the class seems easy, her tests are hard. It took me about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Her tests are usually writing short answer and essays so be prepared to write!
I had her a couple of semesters ago. She loves her subject, and I thought she did a great job teaching it and letting us know what was expected of us. I'm not a Lit fan, but I tried hard and did well. She is fair; you just have to put forth the effort.
great teacher and her class was very enjoyable
Dr. Maddox is a great teacher who is good at what she does. However, be prepared to work. She requires you to put forth effort to succeed, but the work is manageable. I enjoyed her class, but I am glad it is over.
The best professor I have ever had. I learned more in her class than I have ever learned in any class. Also, this is the first class since middle school that I actually read the assigned books. If you get the chance to take class with her, definitely take it. You will not regret it. I know I haven't.
She's nice enough, and the essays are pretty easy. Picks favourites-- stay on her good side. Class presentations are alright, but she likes to interrupt. Does online quizzes and never talks about them-- annoying, really. The midterms/finals are way too long. (Takes 3+hours for the final.)
I thought Professor Maddox's class was a lot of work and she was never very clear on the assignments. The tests would take longer than the class period and were a ton of writing. The Presentations she would give us like a week to prepare for, and we presented in groups. One of the most boring classes i have sat through.
Very unclear about directions, very objective, HAVE FUN.
She was helpful when you needed help but the class was very boring. She loves to make the class teach instead. If you take her class you do not have to attend class but she will deduct points after a few missed classes. It is more helpful when you actually attend her class because she explains things. She also loves using D2L!
Although not the most fun and English isn't my forte, she's a good TEACHER, but not a fun teacher. She's very nice though if you don't give any attitude and try hard. Reading the books makes it 10x easier. Be nice and she'll be nice back. People expect an easier class but it is an honors level english class.
This professor is a nice person, but gives extreme amounts of busy work. two to three hours of homework after each class. Weekly D2L assignments, and poems due every week. But the thing that is most worth knowiing, is that she is INCREDIBLY unclear in her directions and expectations. Often tmes half the class did not know that something was due.
Get ready to dedicate 2ish hours before each class and even more for essays. So much busy work from D2L responses, critiques, online quizzes, essays, and whatever else you have to do. Aside from the work, she is a very nice person with great intentions and will no doubt help you if you need it. Good luck and NEVER EVER skip a class.
Very nice lady. Just one of the hardest Professors i have ever had. nothing is perfect to her. she tore apart a New York Times article because it had things wrong in it. She tears apart your essays also. she expects a lot out of you. No matter how hard you try its not good enough for her
The absolute worst professor I ever had. She picks favorites so if you aren't a favorite don't expect her to help you with anything. I only took this class because it was mandatory. She acts as if it were a class for your major. She's very stuck up & expects everyone to love literature as much as she does. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR
Prof. Maddox-Hafer REALLY likes English. Be extremely wary of your grammar mistakes. Generally gives enough time to get essays done, but still a lot of work. Gives a large amount of busy work on D2L. Many times does not announce exactly when things are happening. USE YOUR SYLLABUS. Leaves lots of comments on graded essays.
Maddox-Hafer LOVES English. Her class isn't hard. She gives you a syllabus in the beginning of the semester which tells you everything you'll be doing throughout the year. It's all straight forward. Make sure to do the D2L's and readings because those are a big part of your grade.
Be prepared to do a lot of homework, and study hard for her tests.
Had her for a fiction workshop, which she doesn't normally teach. Spent a lot of time reading and responding to readings online, and doing a lot of in-class material. Is a tough critic for your writing, so you should have a thick skin or develop one quickly. Not a fun professor, but one that makes you work for your grade.
The Professor is very unorganized and unable to convey the structure of the class to students. She gives feedback, then teaches you to do the exact opposite the next day. The class is not structured for students to succeed. I really would like a different professor to help her make this class better, so I could learn more.
Loved this class. Learned a lot!
You have a reading response to do twice a week. DO NOT make eye contact with her or she will randomly call on you to answer a question infant of the class. She makes you read out loud to the class, you have 3 group projects to do. You only have 2 absent days (excused OR unexcused). I would not recommend her, her voice is annoying too.
Surprisingly, this was interesting and fun.
I really enjoyed comp with Professor Maddox-Hafer, but I had a lot of writing skill from high school. If you are not a strong writer, you will know pretty quick. She will call on you to read out loud or talk, which can be annoying. You also take tests on different writing techniques throughout the semester, and they are nothing but a grade dropper.
Wow. This class was a trip, and not the good kind. She constantly posted quizzes onto D2L that was hard for us to pass, and was always assigning papers. If you're not a good writer you might struggle.
Be ready to be constantly reading and typing essays. There are at least two discussions essays a week that are always over 600 words if you want to get full credit. The exams are awful and you are not given enough time to finish them. If I were you I would stay away from this professor.
She is big on groups. She has her schedule planned out before class starts and she follows it exactly
Its a poetry class so expect to write a lot of poetry and there are readings you have to do out of the book. It's an Easy class if you let it be.
It was an Honors Comp course but it was still A LOT of work for a 100-level class. I never managed to get an A on any assignment and I am a great writer!
Might have been the worst English class I have ever taken, she doesn't understand that most people are only in her class because they need to be not because they want to be. Makes you schedule around her times, try to leave a gap after her class as her tests normally bleed into the next session and she doesn't care if you have a class after.
This professor is very heavy on writing essays and discussion posts. The essays themselves are not that hard to write but be ready to learn about top twenties (grammar rules) and grades them very tough. There are some pop quizzes towards the end of the semester for top twenties. There are times where are you work in groups, but it's not terrible.
She was one of the worst professors Ive ever had. Her criticism wasnt constructive, it was objectively harsh and demeaning. She offered barely any support. Avoid her class at all costs.
ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!!!! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
Great experience.
My favorite gen ed class. Talked about ideas that matter.
Class atmosphere and involvement were great.
