She is tough. But very intelligent. She has definte opinions and expects you to express yours and back them up. She challenges students, and I think it's great. She is easily one of my favorite professors here.
I like poetry and really enjoyed the class. She pushes you to appreciate the subject.
I went into the class with negative feelings about Shakespeare, we are half way through and I'm definitely starting to understand so much more than I thought I would. She is absolutely brilliant and challenging.
He is by far the hardest and most demanding teacher i have had. However she is also the best teacher i have had. She lives lit. and has a vast wealth of knowledge on the subject. If you can't write well avoid her, she will make you write, but she is good.

Very fun teacher! Leads interesting descussions and challenges the whole class! Tough class, but if you keep up you'll really love it!
Lange provides time for open class discussions and goes into in-depth analyzations and background info that's helpful to understand the reading better, and keeps the class interesting with digressions too. The bi-weekly reading journals are not so fun.
my favorite professor ever, dr. lange is the most brilliant person i've ever met. she will challenge you. she will make you back up statements. she will catch you if you plagiarize. she will make you think & help you learn more than you thougt possible.
She is a wonderful teacher. You better know your stuff when you go to class or she will not tolerate you. She definitly knows what she is talking about even if she comes off as extreamly tough.
Very abrupt, but easy to get along with once you get to know her. She expects a lot from her students, and grades as such, but she gives a lot in return. She is fair when it comes to assignments and grading. Don't hesitate when you want an extension or think you might need one. The answer is always 'yes' so ask early!
I am not sure, but I feel like she doesn't like men. BE PREPARED TO WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE, AND WRITE MORE!!
Hard but very nice once I sat down to talk to her, then she was alot of help when it came to writing essays.

more writing than i thought possible, there is no pleasing her, she will let you re-write but you better make it perfect, nothing seems to be good enough for her
She'll kick your ass three ways from Sunday, and at the end, if you don't thank her for it, you're beyond help. Yeah, she's as tough as they come, but she's brilliant and she KNOWS HER STUFF!
She comes off abrasive, but she is not; she is actually a nice lady.
She has a clear passion for poetry which makes the class interesting!
She TERRIFIED me when I was in school, but she really knows her stuff. She will challenge you to keep up and really work at her classes. I had classes with her all three years I was at WOU, and she was a hard grader, but it was a lot more rewarding to know that you really earned good grades from her.
my favorite teacher while at WOU. knows her stuff. WOU is lucky to have her. inspired and helped me beyond belief. always there for the students. if you think she's too difficult -- then you aren't getting it and don't want to learn. thanks Dr. Lange.
She was very helpful and flexible. She gave you every chance to get it right and when you didn't get it, she'd go over it again--in and out of class. What ever it takes. I plan on taking as many classes from her as I can, she makes it fun but makes you grow as a writer.
This teacher is a nice person but seems to be impossible to please. I didn't like the class to begin with but I also didn't think that someone that cares so much about detail that she'd knock a letter grade off for tabbing wrong even existed!!!
The professor takes this class entirely too seriously. She gives no instruction whatsoever before setting us to do our assignments, only telling us to use the models in the book. When our assignments are turned in, she scrutinizes and picks apart our pieces, making sure to leave no error unmarked. She's also extremely unorganized. Don't take!
Shakespeare became alive. Reignited my interest in history. Very knowledgable and interesting but tough. Do not take if you are concerned about grades. Do take if you want to learn tons.
She has an interesting style to her teaching. She has no problem swearing to make her point in class. I like that she really tries to keep our attention in class by making connections to present-day examples.
Dr. Lange you are a wonderful educator who is passionate about your subject area. I am very honored to have taken a class with you, and I am grateful that you push all of your students to do their very best. Thank you for what you do! Also thanks for your dedication to Sigma Tau Delta.
Curses like a sailor and has the temper of a Post-menapausal old lady. Also one of the best english teachers I have ever had. Gives hard assignments/papers and a lot of reading, but is easily accessable and answers emails promptly.
Fall 2009. Her class was rather difficult, but she is an amazing prof and very inspiring. Literary analysis is not my strong point (I'm a CS major) but I enjoyed her class nonetheless. I would recommend her to anybody who wants to really learn literature.
Just to be forewarned, she does have attitude. They could almost give her a reality TV show, but she's not quite that extreme. She won't sugar coat any critical comments. She's not a bad teacher though. If you're an overly sensitive type though, you might want to look for another option.
Dr. Lange's assignments were very difficult, LOTS of reading. Her class though, was awesome. She has a crazy (but amazing) personality. She is hilarious, cusses, has the best stories, and tells it like it is. The class discussions are brilliant, and she really knows her stuff. You will learn a lot. My favorite professor at WOU so far.
Dr. Lang is a hypocritical paradox, but a knowledgeable one. She'll be late most days. If you are, she'll publicly, and loudly, inform you that you get an F for the day. She will lose your work, assignment prompts, anything capable of being lost, and then make up totally unbelievable excuses. She will accept no excuses from you, and stamp an F on all late work. But you will learn--a lot.
Marjory Lange is an amazing educator! If you're easily offended and like teachers who spoon feed you (like in HS) don't take her. Class discussions are AMAZING, and she knows her material. You will learn a LOT from her; even on things not related to the course material. She cares about her students, especially if they're willing to work.
Professor Lange expects way too much from a 300 level course. The amount of work and the quality she expects is not inline with what businesses run today. She had a rude demeanor and makes writing not as fun as it used to be. If you need the class and she is teaching it, wait for another professor.
Lange expects way too much for an LACC course. Entirely too hard for a freshmen level class. A 100 level class should not be this hard. Lange is often rude and unpleasant. She should not bring her personal stress and issues to class with her. STAY AWAY!!!
She is a horrible teacher. She is rude and complains about her life too much. As a former new york "cabbie" she is hardly qualified to teach traffic school let alone a college course. She expects too much from freshman. It is near impossible to have good attendance when she is as unpleasant as she is.
She's very passionate about Shakespeare and very opinionated about it, so differing opinions aren't really accepted. She makes Shakespeare really fun and easy to understand, I love her class! Her essays on the other hand, are super hard. They are very difficult to master, so if you aren't a good mind-reader, avoid!
Outwardly she seems nice but her comments on the papers I received back were harsh and out of place. She makes harsh assumptions about students and their work ethic and abilities. I did very well in all of my other English courses and after having her I have lost most of my self esteem regarding my abilities. Avoid her at all costs.
If you're a freshman and/or you aren't an English major, your comment is totally not relevant. She is a horrible person, but hilarious, and the best writing professor I've ever had. She will make you work, HARD. An A from Marjory Lange is like a Pulitzer Prize, but when you've earned it, you know she's made you a better critical thinker and writer.
She's rude and standoffish. She writes really mean comments on essays and expects way too much out of assignments. So much more difficult of a class than it should be for a 200 level. She speaks her mind and doesn't sugarcoat anything. Not very helpful, just rude in her criticisms. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS.
She will take any chance to publicly humiliate you. She doesn't care if you have illnessesfamily issues that caused you to miss class she expects everyone to be there because when she has problems she still goes. If you're late more then once she will mark you down. She gives plenty of feedback but is very blunt by ripping your work to shreds.
Do not take this professor. She is straight up mean and degrading. She writes mean comments on papers, she doesn't explain anything properly, she makes up lecture material as she goes. I tried 110% in this class and still am barely passing it. She's not helpful at all and won't listen to students when they ask for help.
DO NOT take this professor, she is straight up mean and will not help you with your assignments at all. She will humiliate you if given the opportunity. If you take her, DROP IT IMMEDIATELY. If could give her all zeroes I would.
Assignments are unclear yet graded like there were clear requirements expectations. She also does not have enough knowledge of science or nursing to be grading or 'teaching' a class like this so getting comments on papers are frustrating because she has her own outdated ideas of the healthcare field. Would recommend her to stay in english. not sci
The Good : Funny The Bad: Harsh Grader, All class discussions are pointless and won't help you on the test, Publicly shames every student in the class whenever she can, Doesn't give clear assignment guidelines. I passed all my writing intensive classes with A's, the highest grade I got on a paper in her class was a C. Even English majors will fail
She made me cry multiple times during the term because she is so rude and gives mean comments that don't help. She will call you out in class and crush your dreams of ever being a good writer.
She publicly shames every student in the class whenever she can, Doesn't give clear assignment guidelines. Even English majors will fail Assignments are unclear yet graded like there were clear requirements expectations. She makes harsh assumptions about students and their work ethic and abilities that she will keep all term no matter what
Literally the opposite of the ideal teacher. She talks down to students, refuses any kind of help, and is flimsy at best with assignment guidelines. English majors, beware. And LACC-taking students, steer clear as well.
She made me question if I wanted to be a writer--and an editor--which has been my goal since I was just a kid. I wondered what I was doing with my life and if this was even what I wanted to do. After I talked to the Writing Center though they told me most students don't pass this class and to major in language and minor in ENG/WR (just FYI for you)
She is very funny, and when we get off topic in class, she's almost enjoyable. But she is definitely not equipped to be teaching freshmen. She expects way too much, and we don't have nearly enough time to go over material, because she assigns so much in a short amount of time.
Unclear about what you're supposed to be doing. Funny in class, almost fun at times. However, she gives out way too much material for homework, you don't have time to really get in to it and enjoy it. Essays are harshly graded if it isn't exactly what she's looking for.
Worst teacher I've ever had. I want to become an English Writing teacher, but I almost gave up on my dream of becoming a teacher because of her class. She does not explain the work well, and when you ask questions or want help, all she does is respond with a question of her own. If you want to pass without having a mental breakdown DO NOT TAKE HER!
Flat out awful. Toughest grader on the planet. Horribly unclear assignments. She is a MEAN lady and she enjoys taking the opportunity to humiliate students. Pathetically unhelpful. Stay as far away from one of her classes as you possibly can.
The class is time-consuming. Just be prepared to read and write several pages of summers of about 500 words.
Dr. Lange knows what she is talking about, but she can be extremely critical. She doesn't offer specific critique, but instead, she offered us vague criticism and didn't let us know what grades we got on our many tests throughout the term. She has certain strong suites, but the negative atmosphere made me not want to take any more courses from her.
She cares a lot about what she teaches but for someone who is taking it for a LACC it is a tough class. She forces you to learn and understand the material. She can often come off as rude but dont take it personally.
She is a tough grader. She will call you out in front of everyone for nothing reading the poem right. She is rude and mean and doesn't really care about anyone but herself
This lady is just plain RUDE. very belittling of students, will call a student out in front of everyone. She will let class out early and then will not let students approach her afterwards although class is still technically in session. Refers to your concerns as "crap". For example, "I don't have time for this crap"
If you're an English major, she's definitely the professor for you. She responds to e-mails promptly and is very observant; she'll ask if you're doing okay or if you're tired and gives you some leniency. THERE's A LOT OF READING, so be prepared to do that and write intense, critical-thinking essays. Only take her class(es) if you absolutely have to
She's frank: straight to the point regardless of your feelings that may want more coddling. Read, be in class, be engaged. After 3 courses, I promise that while intimidating in severity, this "tough-love" is just that: tough love. If your paper sucks, she'll show you why so you understand. An advocate of education willing to support your success.
She is one tough cookie but she knows her stuff. Lots of bark, some bite, obviously cares and will help you if you ask but she makes you work for it. Time-consuming, but very effective.
I also had her for 321. I get the impression that Lange is misunderstood. Yes, she does want you to work hard, but as long as you respect her and her deadlines, she will respect you. At the beginning of class she expressly says that if you are struggling, just email/communicate that to her and you can sort it out. I've loved her classes so far.
If you are an English Literature, Writing, or education major with a concentration in Lit, you need to take Lange. This class with kick your ass, but let me tell you... I learned more in this class than in any of my English/Lit classes thus far. You will work harder than you're used to, but it is absolutely worth your time
The amount of people upset that a teacher challenges their abilities is hilarious. Yes, college is for learning, and in Lange's classes you will be forced to LEARN. And THINK. And GROW. Don't go to her classes to check off a box on your to-do list and pretend you can enter society as a valuable educator. Come to learn, not pad your ego.
You learn in this class. If you are taking it for an LACC credit find another professor. My advisor as well as multiple other past students have told me to avoid her class. You need the textbook, and most of your free time is lost because you are reading poems all the time. Her tests are incredibly hard. You cant miss more than 2 classes.
Not recommended for LACC. She can be very rude and blunt and offers the vaguest of criticisms. Will call you out for even being sick in class and call you out for doing something wrong in the class IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. Really should have listened to other students and my adviser and just skipped the class to take it with someone else
I wouldn't typically expect an entry level class to be so difficult. I found this class extremely frustrating sometimes and really challenging to stay on top of however I learned a lot, and will be attending more of her classes. If you are looking for an easy grade, don't take this class, only take her if you are willing to challenge yourself.
Rudest prof I have ever encountered. 10/10 avoid like the plague
If you have to/or are interested in poetry-avoid this professor at all cost. Its not hard to get a good grade in the class if you show up. Attendance is mandatory but the class is miserable. I took this on my 3rd year of school and it was harder than any upper division course Ive ever taken. Would highly recommend not putting yourself through it
Most of the reviews that I read about Professor Lange are from students who honestly think they deserve to pass without putting in the work despite knowing what they're getting into. That's entitled af. Lange is upfront about being blunt and a tough grader. A lot of her bluntness is humor. She is a hardass but you will learn to be a better writer.
Lang is not for the faint of heart. At least once a class she'll call someone out for something, even the smallest mistakes. Make sure and check your email, DO NOT miss a deadline even by a second. I never got below a B on a paper until Lang, and as much as I hate to admit it she did help me improve my writing. Don't take unless you have to.
I've taken Lange 3 times due to requirements, and each time I made sure to down my Xanax with vodka before class just to make it through 2 hours. She excuses her bluntness because "she's from New York," but it's bs, honestly. Be prepared to cry from her feedback and and get yelled at for not thinking critically like her. Good luck!
Very rude and scolds you in front of the class. Very strict on deadlines, so don't be even a minute late. You have to read her syllabus carefully since she didnt accept one of my papers because I forgot to put a required statement in my email that I didn't cheat. Not friendly to get help from. She is not for the faint of heart so tread carefully.
I cannot fathom how this person is an educator. The class is only about passing, as she has not taught us anything. She belongs in a different field, maybe retirement? WOU has many amazing English professors, with even tougher work, but at least you come out knowing you learned something. I didn't get a bad grade, but it was a waste of money & time
Lange is one of my favorite professors! She has always cared deeply about her students and their well-being she's also very critical of subpar work. She's a no nonsense prof. and if you're here for an easy A, you've got the wrong woman. Frankly, there's no limit to what you can learn from her. If you're an English/lit major, she's the one.
This professor is heartless. She will make rude comments about you in front of others. She is also very disorganized. She clearly cannot do online teaching. I haven't learned a thing from her and she makes me scared to come to the zoom meetings. For some reason she cannot set up Canvas so she has you email her your assignments which gets messy.
I've never had a professor resist teaching me before. I emailed her outside of class asking for extra material so that I could understand the concept we were learning in class. She simply accused me of not reading the material, and I always did the readings. In my 5 years here, I have never had such a grouchy rude professor.
DON'T TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER. She appears to be going through some manic episode and has a "god" like complex about her. She is unable to control a zoom meeting and will jump topics unrelated to the class. Want to get a straight forward answer from her? NO CHANCE, it is almost like she has no idea what is going on in the class. Absolute garbage.
So rude I literally did what she asked for in an essay and said I did not she cannot even spell my simple name correctly and sees it in emails and on zoom and wants to give me crap... uh no I think NOT! She makes me feel like a failure I have never had an issue in my LIT classes with my writing ability and she makes me feel like it is worthless.
Very cool content and discussion. The most difficult and mentally stressful class I've ever taken. I normally do well in my LIT classes, but I felt like I should give up on my degree and go live in a cave. I read, re-read, and saved every comment, prompt, and bit of the syllabus. I still was told I didn't know what I was doing. 10+ hours a week.
Marjory was an overwhelming professor who made the class more stressful than it needed to be. The material was a lot of reading and the online environment that she created was uneasy. My one suggestion for this class is to find someone else who is taking it because if you have questions, Marjory will not help you. Overall, she did not do a good job
Literally the rudest professor I have ever had, lacked empathy and was the toughest grader ever. Attendance is only mandatory because otherwise no one would show up. This class truly tainted my love for reading. Professor is not empathetic to disabilities at ALL.
I don’t understand why WOU allows to have teachers like this. Don’t take this class with this teacher. She is rude, she doesn’t care about students.
Don't take! She destroyed my confidence as a writer & as a student overall. She's bias & rude, especially over emails. She shuts down students comments & questions in class. Her comments on papers were not constructive; they were mainly her opinions & nothing to help you do better. You will never know what she wants! She needs to retire. Terrible.
She is quite rude to students and her feedback is not very constructive. She will openly complain in class when a student is not present and complain that they are wasting hers and their time being enrolled. Prepare to question yourself and your abilities as she will make you feel horrible by midterms. Would not recommend.
You purchase four textbooks + an outside book and expected us to memorize every author and every poem in every book(closed book/notes on the midterm and final)She also hardly uses canvas and will give your paper an F if it is emailed through a pdf format. Blames attitude on being from NYC. Does not care about accommodations from ODS. wrecked my GPA
What a great class. She really helped me improve my writing and my understanding of literature. Her comments on my papers were constructive and fair. I would definitely recommend her classes to anyone who truly wants to learn and improve.
She is the rudest professor I have ever had. Even people outside of the class are shocked when I show them the emails she sends. She acts like she could care less about our learning and progress. She also assumes constantly. She will call you out in class in front of everyone. DO NOT TAKE!
Lange is abrasive -- she used to be a New York cabbie -- and the feedback she gives your your essays is brutal. She can be condescending. But if you don't let the crustiness wear you down, she's an intelligent woman who expects her students to put in the work and wants them to be their best. High expectations, high rewards.
Lange made me feel completely incompetent as both a writer and a reader if that was even possible. She's a tough grader, doesn't supply constructive feedback, and is rude. She's also very close minded. Lange doesn't use canvas and everything must be done through email. Aka, I had no idea what my grade was. She was super frustrating to work with. :T
Do not take this class. She is disrespectful to students and gives unhelpful and condescending feedback.
She is an extremely difficult grader and VERY strict. You are expected to talk and participate every class or else you will get 0 credit. If there was an option for 0 stars, I would give it lol.
As a critic she is harsh, unforgiving, and sometimes boarderline cruel. Her standerd for even a B is astronomical. As a teacher she is inept. Takes a long time grading, admonishes and de-motivates students, grades on criteria not presented in the rubric, gives assignemts not in the syllibus, and waits to give grades until after the class drop date.
Sure, she's mean. However, I think she's also simply an ineffective educator, which is even worse, since you're paying for time with her. She's probably at that point in her career where her proficiency and attachment to her field actually hinders her ability to properly reach students, instead of helping. In short, don't waste your time with her.
You are gonna have to read more than you ever have in your life
Lange is clearly knowledge about her field, but is a poor educator. She is often rude and disregards students' thoughts. She acts like her students didn't take her class-and school in general-seriously. I dreaded going to her class because I never knew what to expect.
If you value your mental sanity then run. Wou need to have her either retire or offer some of the required classes be able to be taught by anyone but her. This being that you can only seem to get some of these classes through her. Either they are missing enough staff or she has scared off anyone more competent than her through her being herself.
she's harsh but teaches well
I have had nothing but a good experience with her class. I think everyone else has been a little too harsh on rating Lange, while she is a harsh grader and says things very literally, I don't think that negatively impacts her teaching. People just take what she says too personally. She gives good constructive criticism!
