Great guy! He was one of the best teachers I've ever had!
Mark is a wonderful dude. He maintains a straight-forward, no-nonsense approach to everything (including teaching), and does it with a great sense of humor. His exams (which he calls "experiences") begin with Bruce Lee quotes.
I had Mark for several classes and loved him! He is a great teacher. He is really enthusiastic and makes challenging subjects easy to understand. If you get the opportunity, take one of his classes!
Ainsworth has been my favorite teacher at central!
Very enthusiastic and clearly loves teaching. Passionate about Biology, which made it even more fun to learn from him. Mark explains everything in a concise and easy to understand manner. Classwork is mostly pre-labs & lab worksheets. "Experiences" (exams) are easy if you're well prepared and do the readings daily. Easily my fav class this quarter!
Mark is extremely enthusiastic about the subject matter and clearly loves teaching. Its not hard to get an A in this class if you keep up. He is a fair grader and makes the lectures worthwhile. He even bring a little sarcasm to the table which is hard to find these days.
mark is such a great teacher. in lecture he is crystal clear and makes subjects easy to understand. hes a nice guy and i can tell he cares about teaching and he cares about his students. plus mark is really cute.
Mark was an excellent teacher. Always passionate and eager to share what he knows. He even took time out of his schedule to help me with bio info for another class. Would recommend his class in a heartbeat!
He is a very good intructor. took time to plan for the next lecture, answer questions. very hard grader. need to spend lot of time in class.
Teacher with an energy of an atomic bomb...hehehe. You will never get bored in this class - great experience and a great teacher!!! .....just get ready for a high pace, on the go..w/ lots of notes..notes..notes :)
I LOVE his enthusiasm!! He loves what he does and it shows. It's so nice to have a teacher who WANTS you to fully understand what he's teaching.
Hands down, one of the best teachers I've had during my entire college experience. Mark's enthusiasm is contagious, and I hope I get an opportunity to take another of his classes. He's not bad to look at either.
Excellent teacher...was very helpful and fair. Loved technique and how he was able to make information relevant.
I hated Mark's class at first (even if he is the hottest instructor I've ever had). But after getting through his nerve wracking exams & giving up my social life for that 4.0, I realized how much I gained from his class because he challenges u to learn & apply what u know in different ways. His class really prepared me for my other bios like A&P.
He is a dynamic speaker first and foremost. His passion and knowledge for biology is contagious so whether you enjoy biology or not, you cant help but enjoy his class. His class is hard but worth it, he pushes you to study hard.
Mark will definitely give you motivation to attend class, he is the cutest teacher ever! He is passionate about the subject &makes it very interesting. I enjoyed myself a lot &learned a lot. Make sure you can devote the time and effort to succeed.
I don?t really understand what some student wrote about easiness to get A, I don?t know what they talk about when I was in his class overall students grad were very down. Is it easy or what the answer is for u guy who want to take his class, but I cannot deny one thing that he is smart but his test ( experience) is terrible and has 100 point each(3
Mark is one of the most enthusiastic and engaging teachers I have had during my time at Seattle Central. He is genuinely excited by his field of study - it shows and it's contagious! Although his class is a challenge overall, it is absolutely worth it - I learned so much!
Great teacher and has very thorough lectures. Read the book and take good notes, study of course and you will get a 4.0, easy. One of the easier science classes i've ever taken. When you finish the class, you'll realize then you learned so much.
this is going to be the best biology class you'll ever take at Seattle Central if you're going with Dr. Ainsworth. compassionate, engaging, knowledgeable, and dorky in his own right , Mark single handedly changed my entire perspective about science and the world in general during the quarter I had him. great professor, amazing person.
The greatest teacher I have ever had, I have had him for two classes now and one more coming up this summer that I cannot wait for. He is the most helpful and caring teacher I have ever met. Amazing lectures great labs, and he is extraordinarily nice.
Great teacher, knows what he is teaching.Enjoyed his class but his exam (experiences) are really hard, be prepared to give up everything for this class. I recommend do not take any other class or a very easy class like karate that you don't need to study, get a very big binder NOTES!!!1 you will be ok.
Mark is an amazing teacher to say the least; he is definitely the best I've had thus far. He is ridiculously nice & helpful. His class site has many resources to help you in your study. He is very enthusiastic about biology which makes his class fun. I wish he taught A&P!
Mr. Ainsworth is a fantastic bio teacher. Prior to taking his class i had little interest in bio but his enthusiasms and curiosity is contagious. He is fun but yet still keeps it challenging and he is also very understanding. I missed a lab one time due to having a doctors apt and he just excused me from the whole lab.
Mr. Ainsworth is very helpful. I hadn't liked Biology before taking his class. There are many resources on the class website that help you a lot. He is reachable on the website, email as well as appointment. Lecture is very clear. There are a lot of works need to do in this class but it really pushes you to learn.
Great Professor and mentor
Loves teaching and biology, very helpful, sense of humor. This won't be an easy class. Most of grade is tests, midterm, final. Very little homework. Tells you what is expected knowledge for tests, but you need to know it very well to get 4.0. I spent about 6hrs per week on just my lab notebook. I would definitely take him again, however!
Phenominal. You HAVE to take a class from him while you're at Central, he's absolutely amazing.
Such a fun teacher! He creates the fun out of Biology especially for someone who is a starter. His class lectures are boring but he tries his best to teach it in an energetic way. His "experience" exams are HARD! But it shows you how rough biology can be. He is very helpful in terms of office hours and being available for students!
He is an awesome professor! He explains well and he cares. He is one of the best professor I have ever taken!
Mark is a great professor! He was so enthusiastic and easy to explain the material. I'm not a science person and it is not even my major, but I'm really glad I took his class. You need to spend a lot of time preparing for experiences, they are really HARD, he also has quizes every week, but it is worth it! very fun! I wish all the profs be like him
Hands down the best teacher I have EVER had. His class is a challenge but absolutely worth it regardless of what your education plan is. He gives you all the information he expects you to know so study your notes!!! His passion for biology, learning, and teaching is what makes him an incredible teacher.
Teacher is awesome and expects you to know the things he is teaching you. Tests and exams can be a bit of a struggle but learning takes effort, he teaches that very well!
Extremely difficult subject, but he does the best he can to help you understand. Very friendly awesome guy.
Awesome Biology professor. He is enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable. He doesn't give "tests", he gives "experiences". As long as you are willing to do some studying and regularly attend class, you will do well. What a nice guy!
Mark is a GREAT professor. The content isn't difficult, it just requires time to study. He doesn't assign homework, and recorders the lectures and slide shows which are posted on Canvas. This is a weedout class, so only take it if you're serious. The waitlist is always full and by the final about 20 people drop. Only take 212 is you're committed.
Listen up. If u are taking his class he is a very straight forward teacher where if u try, study, and attend class regularly there is no way u can fail. He only wants u to learn. I am not going to sugar coat it his tests are kind of hard but has all his notes, supplement info online. He makes it clear wht is goin to b on th test so study it u'l pas
Most helpful professor I ever had in SCCC, not a easy class but you'll learn more than expected.
Best teacher I've ever had in my whole life. Very Clear, Very Reachable via e-mail,office hours, etc. Difficult subject but if you try you will get a good grade. He is the ideal teacher who honestly wants you to learn. Hated biology until I took his class, and 4.0 the rest of the series. Biology is now my major.
He absolutely deserves the best teacher in Seattle Central. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! You don't wanna study in Seattle Central if you decide to drop his class at the first day lol
He's amazing. Once you take his class, you won't be able to turn back. I can't describe this teacher with words. He's simply amazing.
Omg, He is the BEST!! No more words to say. He does everything he can as a teacher, and the rest depends on yourself.
His passion for biology is contagious and he'll get the class going. Exams are HARD and you'll need to keep up with his daily online lectures for his weekly quizzes. One of the best teachers SSC has so if you can take him, absolutely do! But get ready to study your bum off and put your social life on hold for the quarter.
He is so amazing and makes learning biology so fun. I loved his class. He is probably one of my fav teachers ever.
One of the best teachers ever. Definitely take him if you want to learn. Study hard and you will get a good grade.
Most definitely the best instructor in biology dept. As per expectation, this course involves lots of college level reading and memorization so be prepared to work hard and ask Mark questions when you don't understand something.
he is the best teacher ever. very funny and smart. his tests are tough but the resources (his video lectures!) he provides is more than enough.
He gives extra credit. He is respected by students. He is the best professor EVER. I would take him again. I miss him right now.
great!
Take from him if you can! Lectures are all posted online and live video, so it is like you are in class all over again when you review. I did lousy on the first couple of tests, but by the final, scored a 100% with the extra credit questions! If you study, you will do amazing. He gives you all of the tools you need. And an amazing reading list! XO
The best biology class I've ever taken. Mark records lectures online for us to listen to outside of class and spends class time answering questions we have about the material. The textbook we used was free, online one. He is very passionate about biology and makes the class super fun and interesting.
His exams were really hard. Each exams has 10 pages + final was 15 pages. He doesnt give "lecture" in class, he gives lectures online, in stead. That was the hardest class I've ever taken...
He is a good teacher, but his exam was hard. Every week we need to take 3 quiz(Random Choose one as weekly quiz score for each week). Lab may be a very interesting part. Like I said, nice teacher but hard test.10 page test with only 5 or less multiple chooses).
Mark is an excellent professor and person! This is a tough subject to learn, there are a lot of terms you need to know in order to see the bigger picture(s). Mark does a great job at organizing all the information coming at you. Even though the exams were challenging, I don't think they were impossible by any means. Take him if you need biology!
He's easily the best teacher I've ever had. There's not much more I can say, he's amazing. Take him if you can! People on here are saying his tests are too hard. I would say the tests are an appropriate level of difficulty considering the material. If you keep up with the work, you will do fine. And he gives plenty of extra credit to make up too.
Take it if you want a online class. The lecture usually wasn't about the material in the exam. Worked my ass off on reading and memorizing. Survived with tears. He seems very caring though. A nice person indeed. Just don't take him if you want a easy A. It's not happening.
Sorry to be the voice of dissent but I do not like his grading methods. He is SUPER nitpicky about you knowing every little detail in the essay questions on tests. I thought I nailed one and he gave me 16/20. He treats the class like it is 400-levelhe makes you read primary literature, and wants you to have a deep understanding of the labs.
I went into this class with no biology experience and this teacher helped me understand all the materials needed by providing the class with his notes, lectures, and time. By far one of the best teachers. He is very helpful in helping you understand the course and is very generous with grading the exams and labs. One more thing, EXTRA CREDIT!
By far the greatest teacher I've ever had.
One of the greatest teacher I've ever taken in my life. There is only one thing I don't like about his way of teaching is he doesn't give lectures in class. U must access online video lectures he made which don't have clear explanations for ppl who take biology 1st time. In this class to get 4.0 means u know everything you learn through this class.
By far one of the best teachers Ive ever had, he makes the class so interesting and fun youd wish it was longer
Mark Ainsworth is an excellent professor. He is extremely engaging and passionate about the subject. His teaching style is inverted, which means that you need to read the material BEFORE coming to class. Come to class with questions. Pay attention in labs and write EVERY detail down. His videos are very helpful so make sure to watch them.
Online lecture videos, daily quizzes (on non-lab days), experiences... The key to success in his class is to not fall behind! Watch the 1-2 lectures for that day and be prepared prior every class or lab session. Dr. Ainsworth is awesome, caring, funny and very intelligent! I would take other biology courses with him if he taught them.
Get ready to work hard for this class!
Gives well explain lectures. He is very helpful.
You should attend class for understand the material. Nothing too demanding from him, I mean, you need to have certain understanding or nothing to pass the class with 4.0. Just try to complete as much assignment as you can.
His class was easy. His grading system is out of a certain amount of points and there's a clear diagram on how many points you need to get a certain grade. Getting these points was extremely easy, you would have to do simple tasks like a vocab quiz, Labsters, homework, etc. Go to Zoom classes if you wanna learn, if you simply want to pass, no need.
Very unorthodox grading method; you essentially grade yourself and defend it at the end of the course. Put in the work and you will get the grade you want, but if you are only looking to put in the minimum effort you are going to struggle.
BEST PROFESSOR AT CENTRAL. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Mr. Ainsworth was amazing. The content was difficult and there was A LOT of stuff to cover, but his canvas class was really well organized and easy to follow. The labs were also laid out really nicely. He was funny and extremely passionate about biology, something every teacher should be in their subject. He was very nice and graded fairly.
One of the best professors I've encountered! I highly recommend taking his classes! He's helpful, organized, understanding, and kind. You need to put a lot of time and effort into this class; the workload is heavy, so be prepared!
Mr. Marky Mark is a man amongst boys, he does an amazing job at keeping you engaged and makes it fun to learn Biology. Very lenient with grading and offers very accessible course material. I would recommend him as a professor to 11 out of 10 people if I could, don't miss out.
Great, hilarious teacher. Honestly not as hard as a class that some people make it seem, as long as you watch the videos twice and do the Quizlet, you're all set for an A. Do not slack during class, this is a class that is engaging and fun. Try your best to spend around an hour daily thinking about biology for an A.
Pay attention to his lectures!
I've only watched his lectures on YouTube and emailed him. I've never actually taken his class, but from what I got out of them, they were fantastic!
Aside from being a hilarious teacher cracking dad jokes here and there, Mark was one of the best professors I've ever had. He truly cares about his students and you can see how passionate he is about biology whenever he speaks. My biggest tips are to use the Quizlet, stay on track with the class, and ask questions!
He is one of my favorite teacher in Seattle Central Colleges
He is a very passionate teacher about science! He wants you to watch his youtube lectures before coming to his class and ask questions when you come to his class. However, I haven't been taking biology for 12 years. On the second day, all of the sudden he wanted us to draw atom and cells on the board that he did not even teach!
all the reviews are pretty accurate so there's not much to add but I do think for you to genuinely enjoy this class you'd have to somewhat be interested/passionate about biology. not rly the teacher's fault, the material is just extremely difficult and requires a lot of memorizing. teacher makes the class bearable but just be prepared to struggle
You want this man to teach you Biology. The people have spoken. It's a complicated subject, so either you love it or you're just scraping the surface for your lil' premed degree. Mark loves it, and it's apparent in the quality of his presentations and the extra unrelated but fascinating science reads he makes available to everyone for inspiration.
Dr. Ainsworth was by FAR the best professor I have ever had. The class was difficult but not so difficult that it was demotivating, it was at a perfect level which made learning new concepts feel incredibly satisfying. His grading method is perfect, it gives wiggle room while still giving you motivation to try. I learned so much! Highly recommend!
Biology is never an easy subject, as always. However, Mark is so nice and enthusiastic about what he teaches, so I think his passion has inspired me and made me want to study harder. (Just don't let him be upset, he deserves better!)
Dr. Mark is a really good reacher. But you have to watch his online lecture vedios and well prepared for each class and lab, which means know what you are going to do and class concept. Bring what you don't understand to class, and he is very wellcome for questions. You have quiz for each lecture, if you prepared for classes, you are good.
This class was flipped, with lectures being pre-recorded and in-person class time for discussion and questions. I am not usually someone who does well with the inverted class model, but was able to succeed thanks to Dr. Mark's excellent teaching. He genuinely cares about his students and their comprehension of biology. Lots of extra credit offered!
Best teaching I have ever seen, and NOT just marginally. Material is dense and he helps you enjoy learning it. Frequent quizzes will motivate you to stay in synch. Do that little bit of work every day and you will score high. Extra credit / generous grader. Class and lab time is engaging and well spent. Beware you might like to transfer to science!
The best biology professor! His lectures and labs are very active and motivational. I was always struggling with science but Mr. Ainsworth knows how to teach! Extra credit is available. I would take all biology levels with him but he only teaches 160 and 211 :( If you're looking for entertaining, easy-going classes, take this! You won't regret.
Mark was a great teacher very passionate about biology, his lectures were online not that many in person lectures which was a con. He has 3 exams plus 1 cumulative final, his exams are 10 pages long, which is very draining. And his final is 16 pages long. No notes on exams btw. But overall learned a lot and had a great time in labs.
Dr. Ainsworth is the best professor I've had. Incredibly kind and caring, and so passionate about his field. He is very clear about expectations; the 'guiding questions' worksheet provides the framework to earn a 4.0 in this class. Experiences (exams) are beyond reasonable. One research project optional, but required to earn 4.0. Take 211 with him!
Dont make my mistake and take bio 160 if its not required for your major as it was a ton more content then other bio classes. Professor uses good analogies, is helpful and organized. Although lectures a bit slow. A good grade is achievable. Fun labs.
Fantastic lecturer, Mark is inspirational in the way that he makes connections to other concepts in the curriculum and invites students to think big thoughts about the bio-dogma. Some of my favorite times at SCC were in this classroom. I learned more from his lectures than I expected, filling my notebook each time.
Took Mark for BIO260 - rare case where learning and understanding is the true goal of a course. Tests were extremely generous with up to 10pts extra credit, labs were engaging, lectures were posted online in addition to in-person. You want this guy to teach you microbiology. He has a tattoo of the progenitor Archaea on his arm. I'm serious.
Truly a great professor and just a great person in general. Mark reignited my passion for biology and helped me learn so much! He is extremely understanding and caring while also caring deeply about his students learning. I only made this account so I could give him a good rating, he was really that great!
verrrryyy fast goes thru lecutres like hes being timed... took this class for 260. manifesting that A+. so far he is going thru things so quickly, i need to ressearch everytjimng on my own time. i want to use my wrist as a barcode scanner
Mark is a great person, but the problem is that sometimes he forgets that we're students and don't understand the material like he does (he forgets to simplify/introduce new terminology) his study guides are soooo long and there's just too much information to practice for this class,it's beyond comprehension.I feel like 4 a micro class its too much!
Everyone in the reviews is LYING. This Prof did not care about learning and only wanted you to FAIL. he says "im looking for ways to give you credit" NO, this is a completely lie. You have to memorize everything he does and if you do not, on the experience's you will fail because you didn't memorize anything he said. LECTURE HEAVY. Lots of memorize
Absolutely the best! EVERYYY lecture day has a quiz on pre-recorded videos you watch the day before. Labs are interesting. This class is "work extremely extremely extremely hard to get good grades". Decent amount of extra credit. Lots of content but he explains really thoroughly when you ask him. LOTSS of memorization but doable as he has quizlet.
Mark is a good person as a human and Professor, but he is memorize heavy. He makes you memorize 11 weeks of work on the final with nothing except your brain which that is just too much. I just hate his way of teaching, you need to listen to the online lectures and retain all of that info from it to even do the quizzes he gives in lectures.Dont take
amazing professor! I took him for micro and the class definitely has a lot of material but you just have to be willing to learn it. exams and lecture are heavy, but there are clear study guides on what's needed to know. lab was fun and you work with your table mates. just study hard for the exams and u will be fine
very good professor
Took him for BIO260, hard class but he is pretty good at getting a good base for you to be able to build microbio knowledge off of. You can tell he genuinely cares!
One of the best professors I've ever had. Focused much more on learning and growing as a student rather than only on grades. Very forgiving and clear expectations. If you are passionate about biology he is very good at nurturing that.
I took Mark for microbiology and loved it! If you watch the lectures online and fill out the study guide as you go, it is pretty much impossible to not get an A. I had a particularly tough quarter and Mark was extremely kind and understanding and accommodated me while still ensuring I learned the material. 10/10 person and teacher.
