Great class for both history majors and people looking for a writing intensive core. Three papers, midterm and a final. If you go to class and stay on top of the reading, this class is a breeze. Pop quizzes aren't fun, but easy if you have read. Make sure you participate in class, this gets you on his good side.

Class was probably the most boring i have sat through in a while, that being said if you read the book attendance not really that important, just 2 pop quizzes and he hints at when they will be. Overall a nice guy but extremely boring class and the final was pretty challenging, only couple grades so hard to recover from low score too

Though you may be bored by his lectures, he is an extremely intelligible and helpful teacher. Don't be fooled by his monotone lectures, if you pay attention you'll actually be quite amused at his humor. I would very highly recommend him to someone who has interest in the subject previously. At least in some sense.

BORING, but intelligent... is the best way to sum this guy up. He is crystal clear (at the risk of being TOO regimented)in what he wants from his students. Lots of reading, none of which I did, and still pulled off a B in the class. 1 5-pg paper, 1 10-pg paper, and two exams. Not a hard class, though easy to want to skip.

Mark Allee is SUPER into his subject and is extremely knowledgeable of it. His problem is he talks straight from his notes(which are in great detail) and no one ever knows what to write down. Tests are essay and map (which is super hard) and his voice WILL put you to sleep.

Professor Allee is a great guy and a relatively lenient grader. Attendance is not mandatory, thank goodness because lectures are BORING and hard to take notes on. I can't say I would recommend his classes, but for an easy A or B he might be worth the painful lectures.

Yes, his voice is hard to listen to but he is extremely knowledgeable. You don't necessarily need to pay attention to his lectures because all he does is assign lengthy papers. Demonstrate your writing ability and your understanding on the texts and it's an easy A--so long as you're not dumb. Best prof for HIST299 hands down.

He is very knowledgeable about Asian History, but it is very hard to stay awake in that class. There are 2 pop quizzes and weekly in class writing assignments on articles that he posts in blackboard. The midterm and final are essay questions with maps that you have to memorize. Overall, in my opinion, VERY BORING CLASS..sorry

If you want a class to fall alseep in every time you enter, this is your class. Professor Allee is very smart but his lectures are a pain to go through. I learned more by reading the textbook than going to class. However he has two pop quizzes in the semester each worth 5% of your grade so attendance is indirectly mandatory. Overall decent class.

Really boring... It's clear that Dr. Allee is extremely knowledgeable -- and he is a fair/lenient grader. However, giving a midterm and final over a 300 page textbook and providing no guidelines for what will be covered nearly gave me an ulcer. Literally dedicated 16 weeks of my life stressing over the midterm/final. Its not worth the suffering.

Boring lecturer. Went into the class already interested in the material and with a strong knowledge of Asian History, which made the class easier. For a writing intensive, it is fairly lax. Go to all classes so you don't miss an in-class assignment. But you can zone out for lectures. Just make sure you understand major concepts from the book.

Mark is passionate about history, especially China. He smiles when you answer a question. It's quite adorable. You don't have to participate but you have a writing assignment each class. You can use your laptop during class. It's not a hard class. I didn't get the book. Beware of "um." He will say this word 400 times a class. We counted.

Very knowledgeable about the subject and history in general. More of a traditionalist about what he wants out of students, interested in making students think for themselves, which was appreciated. Fair grader and the easiest choice for Writing Intensive. Recommend for history majors, less so for people looking for core credit.

He knows a lot about history, but I disliked the class because it was so lecture heavy. He does have power points, but they don't have words so much as images and dates of things that he's talking about. It's not a bad class, and he knows his stuff, it's just very all over the place. But, for writing intensive, it's super easy.

Allee is hands down the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. To his credit, he's clearly very knowledgable about the topic of Chinese history. This class made me want to drop out of Loyola. Research paper has ridiculous requirements and is better fitting an assignment for a grad student who actually specializes on the topic. Worst!

The content was amazing. I enjoyed learning about East Asia. However, the book and his lecture style are awful. His slides do not contain much, he reads everything orally and goes into great detail you will fall asleep. But if you can handle long readings and take good notes by hearing detailed inf without pictures/segmented slides then take him.

He's not as bad as reviews may lead you to believe. He's a very nice grader . His lectures are very dry and last the entirety of class. If you don't already enjoy history, stay away. This is a writing heavy class despite not being a "writing intensive." Tests are essays and map questions, so your grade depends on your ability to write and memorize.

Allee is a great professor to take if you want to learn more about Chinese history. The man has an answer to any question you could ever ask. There aren't a ton of assignments, but they're almost all written and he's not a particularly harsh grader.
