Very easy class.... he goes very in depth to the subject matter and as long as u take notes, you'll do fine in this class. Tests are all multiple choice, and every friday he shows a video and has an open note quiz on it... easy points!
VERY EASY CLASS. He's really into his subject, will take as long as you want to explain something. On Fridays, you watch a video, fill out an outline, then do a quiz on the video, and you get to use the outline. Very easy class as long as you show up and take decent notes...never used the book once.
Super easy. He is a funny nerd dude that is super into Bio, I was amused greatly by him. Really easy stuff, loves his subject and will explain stuff as long as you need. Easy weekly video quizzes, exams are about 80 multiple choice question. Easy stuff, funny goofy guy.
A very smart man, he is organized and entertaining. If anyone has an elective left I wouold HIGHLY reccomend one of his classes. I am a History major and greatly enjoyed of the science.
A very helpful prof. He is always ready to help you during his office hours and returns your emails very quickly. I would definitaly recommend him for BIO 111.
Prof. Sturtevant is quirky funny and very intelligent! The class was mostly power point lecture and test were m/c and t/f. A few lab reports all done online. Class was very informative and he makes you WANT to learn and LIKE it. How rare is that? I recommended that any taking BIO take him. You'll love him!
Class was pretty boring, half the students dropped after the first test. curve is great but this class is a lot of work. start studing for tests weeks in advance.
Very very boring. take someone else. he moves quickly and says "any questions" but doesn't answer any. His humor is very dry, but I think that's a science prof thing. NO CURVE, long tests. He gives you extensive study guides, so you should study those a lot. wants you to know every little detail, even if not lectured over.
boring and i didnt understand a thing and i love biology
This man has the sloppiest writing and hand writes all of his notes & does not put anything on Moodle.... If you ask him a question since you can't read the sloppy writing, he will blow you off. He doesn't answer relevant questions, but questions totally off topic he talks about for ten minutes! Take someone else!!! :-(
I am not a dumb person. This man is insane. He expects you to know every little detail of everything he teaches. I sincerely think I am going to have to retake this class. However, he is moderately entertaining. That's my only compliment...
I'm not sure what these other people are talking about. This professor is great! Yea lecture can get boring, but his Hawaiian shirts are hilarious! He posts all his notes online and gives thorough study guides. He presents the information very clearly and if you need help, he is very useful during office hours. I defiantly recommend him!!
He is super boring....the tests are moderately hard. Probably dont need to show up to class and you can still get a passing grade. He also curves at the end of the semester....
DO NOT. DO NOT. DO NOT take this professor if you want to pass this simple bio 111 class. exams are ridiculously hard, he offers no extra credit. he expects you to know every little detail about everything he teaches. very boring. find another professor!!!!!
He is monotonous, and you NEED to be able to stand lectures that may be dry. Yet, he is funny once you get used to him. He has a real passion for the subject, and makes himself open for help outside of class. He prepares his students to the best of his ability, and he is not against curving like some teachers. I would recommend him to others.
Most clear, understanding, and straightforward prof of any in the dept. Tests are extremely doable. His powerpoints are online, as are extensive study guides. For the 1st exam, he posted a few sample questions. No other prof does this. Anyone who fails Sturtevant just plain didn't study. He makes a traditionally hard class extremely doable.
Honestly Professor Stuartvent is one of the best at OU teaching bio. As long as you study the notes the test's EASY and the labs are VERY easy! (easy 15 pts.!) Plus he curves on tests & the final grade! (what more could you want!?!?) EASY 4.0 class!
He wasn't the most interesting guy, but he obviously loves biology and does his best to make it interesting. He was very clear with everything. I took 2 years of high school biology and there was a lot of overlap. There was more detail, but nothing impossible. Notes are all power point based, which is great. Perfect English, Highly recommended.
Probably comparatively one of the better biology profs at OU, however, his lectures are extremely boring, he reads right from a powerpoint, throws A LOT of curveballs on his tests, and doesn't like to answer questions. Know your stuff in and out, study the study guides, and you'll do fine. Find a study group or go to the SI, that's what saved me.
great teacher. knows everything about biology. the study guide is not enough to do well on the test you must study your notes and his presentations.
Okay teacher. His class is pretty easy but he isn't very good at explaining something when you ask him. Nice guy though. Exams are not too hard but you really need to study. Web labs are really easy too.
super boring class, i recommend taking good notes and reading the book. the tests are really hard and confusing. asks more than he teaches in the class. have fun :)
Very nice guy, uses Power Point presentations which are effective. However, it is important to attend the lecture because he goes into more detail than just what is on the slides. Assigns web labs which are really easy. Tests are hard, you really need to know the material.
He gave out study guides before every exam and pulled questions from it for the exams:) This made it very easy to study for them. He also explains the material extremely well yet doesn't when you ask him questions. Overall he was a great BIO teacher take him 4 sure if you need to ever take BIO 100!
Good teacher, but tough class. My advice is to attend class and attend the SI classes. (Supplemental instruction). I had the best SI instructor-Darlene Stark and she cut my study time down tremendously! It became easy after attending the SI classes. I got a 4.0 in the class because of the SI class. Professor Sturtevant is very enthusiastic about BI
very boring. make sure you read the test questions CAREFULLY! as long as you study HARD you'll get a decent grade. he really isnt so bad. i liked the class : )
i really enjoyed his class. i thought he was very clear in his lectures. everything is posted online too. he made himself very available for questions as well. i got a 4.0 in the class..all you have to do is attend lecture, study for tests, and do all the labs. i would take him again.
Classes were boring for the most part. I thought his witty remarks and extreme interest in biology were funny though. I stopped going to class after the first couple weeks. All you need are notes and the book. Notes are online. I probably would have gotten a 4.0 if i went to class but i got a 3.5 without ever going...i can live with that. STUDY!
I took class over Summer, LONG, BORING classes, but great professor, very clear, only tests based on notes, great notes, a LOT to remember, but I got a 3.4, wasn't too bad. I would highly recommend him if you're looking for clarity. I graduated from high school 8 years ago and this class is what I needed to get on track with the BIO.
Professor Sturtevant is a fairly decent professor. He tries to make the class interesting, but he unfortunately often falls flat. However, if you show up to class every time, take down his notes, and study before the test, you'll do fine. This class was not the best biology class at Oakland that I have taken, but it could have been a lot worse.
BOOOOOORING!
This dude is legit, BEST BIO TEACHER CURRENT AVAILABLE. you NEED TO STUDY. I slept alot, big boring lectures, not much work. STUDY FROM OLD TESTS (get them from previous students) go to SI the day before tests, it was very helpful for studying. Didnt try very hard, got a 3.2
he's pretty much monotone. nothing he says makes sense. he'll mess up test grades and not man up and fix it, even though there's proof he messed up. he's not the slightest bit helpful, over half of my class failed.. what's that tell you?
If you are not interested in Bio, do not take him. He will make you hate it and makes no sense in teaching at all. I took this as elective, and boy was that a bad idea! Got a 3.0 while studied my ass off with a tutor. He will nickle and dime you on the smallest thing possible in the labs and mark you off. Avoid this Hawaiian shirt guy at any cost!!
Wow! It is sad to see how lazy people are! This class was not that bad, as long as you take it seriously (because yes, this is college) you will do fine. I was actually enthralled to find out he teaches BIO 300, I can't wait to take him again!
this guy is totally crazy, you have to study hard, study untill you pass out, still cant make an A. I am taking this class right now, I have and average 3.5 but I have D in this class, which he considers F. Dont take this class, this guy is very very hard. I hope I dont have to retake this class.
omg I never cared for BIO but he def. made me hate it! talks in a monotone voice. bores you straight to sleep. marks every little thing wrong. even studying as hard as you want makes little difference. doesn't respond to emails or questions. just an overall bad class! don't take it as alternative, elective, or gen ed requirement. you will fail.
Dont take this class unless you have no other option. I am taking this class as a gen. ed. class. very very hard class, the tests are made to fail. very hard class. help your self and try with take this class with another professor.
Don't bother, if you think you are interested just get the workbook. This class is just busy work, with a quiz every week! wasn't worth it!
I took this class as an elective and as it wasnt the hardest class ever, sitting through it was. He is completely monotone, he has a passion for the subject but he cannot convay that passion to the students at all. As mentioned before he is a hard grader on the labs, he deducts points for incorrect table headings not on the lab work it seems.
This professor has a passion for Bio, but his lectures are a bit boring. Grades pretty tough on minor things on the labs. Test are ok but doable. I highly recommend attending the SI's They are very helpful! Plus Our SI lead rocks! The final is moderately easy. He does curve grades. I recommend that you take this course w/< diff. Classes and STUDY!
Great choice for a writing intensive class since the class requires about 5 pages of writing for the entire semester. The class was essentially a less in depth review of BIOs 111 and 113, the tests were very basic and included five extra credit questions each. Not the most exciting class, but a quality choice to knock off some requirements.
HE IS SOOOO BORING! It is the longest class that you will ever sit through! Tests were tough and he grades hard on labs. I strongly do NOT recommend him.
you are setting yourself up to fail if you take this professor. yes he may have passior for bio, but is the WORST professor in the world. his lectures makes you fall asleep. and they have no thing to do with what is really on the exam. his exams are extremely hard, and hardly managable. would not recommend this class unless its a pre-req.
Wonderful!!! I wish he could've taught all of my classes at Oakland! 4 exams, no cumulative final - just study you will be fine! - Very little writing involved, just two media labs. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Mark, he loves teaching! Science/Health related majors will LOVE him!! I actually enjoy going to class, take him!!!
Boring lectures, he doesnt go as in depth as the book does, tests are ok, final exam is fairly easy. Grades hard on weblabs.try and do ur best on the quizzes cuz they are like free points. pretty easy overall class,i almost failed exam 2 and i still got a 3.9 overall in the class. just make to to STUDY and u will surely get a 3.5+
Very boring lectures, but he's passionate about what he teaches. However, he presents everything as absolute fact...but then tells us things in science are not fact and are open to debate. Does NOT have an open mind. I felt like he tried to brainwash us. His tests are hard also! This guy just sucks.
Dr. Mark is a fabulous teacher. His lectures were long, but I enjoyed going. He loves what he does, & he knows this stuff isn't easy so he goes through everything step by step. He gives practice tests and study guides. He is really funny too. You do need to study, because there is a lot to know, but I got a 4. I would take another class with him.
very hard to understand sometimes. quizzes are very important and can help your grade a lot. exams are pretty straight foward and weblabs are impossible to get a 20/20 on. overall easy class. oh and hes a DR........
This is a TOUGH class. YOU have to put in the effort to do very well in the class. I got a 3.0 with his curve in the class. He covers all the material that is game for the tests and he is always willing to answer emails and meet with you for questions. It's just a tough class, but he breaks down material. Work hard& youll do well.
Boring professor, but easy class. He curves each test and DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! you print out powerpoints and fill in the answers during lecture, so attendance helps a lot.
Excellent teacher and a very nice person! Loved his class. The lectures can be a little long but VERY interesting and he is very passionate about what he teaches. Is happy to answer questions and is very fair. Although some of the topics are controversial he is respectful and presents logical information. Would HIGHLY recommend!
Definitely take him for BIO111. The subject material is hard but he makes it as easy as possible for you to understand. Curves every exam and gives study guides and practice exams before. Exams are based off of lecture so if you go to class you dont need to buy the book.
I dont know what these people are talking about. I took AP BIO in high school so i know my biology, but didnt take the test. big mistake having to sit through his class. he is very boring, and monotone. in my eyes a terrible prof. literally at least 60% of my class recieved at 0.0 gpa. not worth the $1200 paid.
1 word...BORING. All he uses is PowerPoint and he just drags the class out, if the class was only 1hr long I would take him again just bcuz you don't have to come but now I stay away from his classes! DON'T TAKE IT. No matter if the time is perfect or not!!
Had him for Bio 111. Best Bio 111 prof you can get. Lectures are all online, but you still should go to class. Studyguides and pratice exams are given, he is very clear and makes sure you understand things. Wake up though people, its college, you have to put the time in, its a college level Biology class, it isnt a "Easy A." Really nice guy too!
I liked him. He explains things in terms that are very clear. He is a bit monotonous though. 3.4 was highest in the summer II class. It wasn't easy and req'd a lot of studying.
Amazing Prof, not an easy class, its Bio 111, so its a weeder class. He gives you all the tools for success though! People who are rating him bad on here, wake up and focus. Its college!
I hated him. I had to withdraw because what he teaches and what he puts on exams are very different. He doesn't know the text book he assigned us to use at all. He's rude and monotonous. His online quizzes are hard, only 5 questions so you're screwed with 1 or 2 wrong. I use to want to major in science, not anymore-- he helped me realize this.
He didn't teach. He has TA's which are clueless as to what they are doing. The quizzes are hard but only because they don't really tell you what will be tested. Stuff tested on may not be from the book either. The book tells you to consult another book to answer questions! No clear direction
The only grades in the class are 4 exams and 2 media labs. The media labs are super easy and his exams are decent, too. The exams are his lectures, all i did was make notecards and got no lower than a B. The final is not cumulative. Easy class, just take lots of notes through the boring lectures.
If your GPA means anything to you as far as nursing/med school/etc., avoid him. Seems to be amused by tricking students on in-class iClicker quiz questions, as well as throwing curveballs at students on exams. Gives you exam review sheets to fill out on your own, but then asks things that you've never seen/heard of before on his tests.
Class average was 71.5%. 'Nuff said.
I planned on majoring in Bio until I had him. I had taken several Bio classes in high school and still only a low B. His tests have information he's never even talked about and his study guides are pretty much useless because he doesnt even give an answer key. The iClicker questions make up a huge part of your grade so plan on attending all classes
This guy loves Biology and is a very good instructor. His tests are multiple choice and fair. For those who complain that he doesn't give study guide answers...at least he gives one (and a practice exam). Unless you are lazy, you will learn a lot and benefit from this professor (and probably get a good grade too).
Very, very, very BORING lectures, but if you can stand the boredom and his lovely flamingo shirts he actually is a decent professor. Definitely passionate about bio, just not in helping students outside of class.
Do not take this class with this teacher. Even though he curves a lot at the end, the tests and quizzes are fill in the blank and hard. Avoid him at all costs.
Hardest 100 level course I've ever taken. USELESS outside of class. Doesn't answer email.
controlling, insecure, he enjoys trick questions, non-helpful, overwhelming amount of work, not fair with all students, favors some students, names you an animal, no curve, have to beg for help or extra credit....take any other teacher!
horrible prof, gives entire class an animal name, takes attendance by using iClickers, boring, can't keep class attention, wears Hawaiian shirts every day, uses trick questions
If you trying to get into nursing or pre-med avoid him!!I'm a 4.0 student and my final score was 95, he gave me a 3.8. He's not good with questions, he'll give you a quick answer and look at you weird if you still didn't understand. his class alone lowered my GPA.
This was a very interesting class! He posts all of the powerpoints on moodle, just memorize those and you will do fine. As far as 300 level bio classes go, the exams were pretty easy. I Notice a lot of BIO 111 students complaining on here, if you can't handle bio 111, you won't be able to handle upper level bio classes, start looking elsewhere.
Took this class with Hosch did awful, 1st day of this class I learned more/ and understood more than the whole semester of Hosch, focus on the lecture notes, practice exams are very similiar to exams, some even have same questions. I only use the book if I don't understand something, lecture notes helpful even though lectures may be boring
Very interesting evolution class. You can tell this guy really loves this stuff, and exams were pretty fair as long as you memorized info from the book and his powerpoints.
This profesor is very monotone. He makes this subject very boring and i cant count how many times i fell asleep. I have never skipped class and i studied my butt off and never got better than a C+ on an exam. I dont recommend him. His 5 minute timed online quizes are hard. you either get lucky or you dont. doesnt offer a lot of points
Not helpful with questions. He always seems poorly prepared for class. He has very vague power points with poor grammar. He does not know the difference between affect and effect. Not straightforward about material. He uses a lot of "seems to be", "may be", "could be" statements which is frustrating when it comes to studying for exams.
Very dry and boring class. He teaching completely through powerpoint which at times he goes through so fast you dont even have time to write/copy the notes down. Class avg on tests was never more than a 74% even with the extra credit on the exams he offered. We had 10 easy writing assignments throughout the class to do. Hard to get a 2.5 here
Prof. is very knowledgable about evolution & makes the class interesting. However, he is disorganized, powerpoints are vague & posted after lectures...sometimes takes a week to post. Exams are difficult - nearly all fill in the blank and short answer. Class average about 70. Overall really enjoyed the professor and the class; hated the exams.
This is not an easy class! Material is really difficult. I worked my butt off and got a 2.8. But I would definitely take Sturtevant if you can- he is very willing to help and such a nice guy.
He's pretty straight-forward. He lectures, he asks a couple questions in-class for points, you do some online quizzes, some online labs, and 4 exams. It's a tough class, he warned us to take a lower level science class if we only needed a gen-ed credit, I would recommend the same. He knows what he's teaching pretty well though.
Nice guy,but very weird. All he does is read right off powerpoints, hard to stay awake. Monotone and very boring. Goes over material way to fast and talks very quiet. You have to pay attention and study to get a somewhat good grade.
He is the worst professor I've ever had.
Pretty easy class because the professor was pretty laid back. Just being he doesn't spoon feed you, doesn't make him a bad professor.
Absolutely avoid if possible. Horrible, horrible professor for this class. Brilliant, but awful when it comes to giving his students the chance to succeed. Tests on material from his knowledge rather than his notes. Also useless when you want to ask him a question; he will get sarcastic&redundant. Dry lecture at 8 am? Don't do this to yourself.
Come to class and take notes. He tells you the exact information that he wants you to have in your research paper. Group presentations are long, but pretty easy. As long as you attend class and pay attention, its pretty hard to not get a good grade.
I would not take him. Hes the worst professor at Oakland University. He accused me of cheating on a lab which I didnt and didnt care. Hes a boring teacher and his exams are hard. You will probably fail with him
This guy takes the cake, without question, for being the most boring professor. I had to force myself to even care about this class. If he wasn't so damn boring, this class wouldn't have been all that bad. I would probably try to avoid him if you can.
Ok the tests are not nearly as bad as people say on here.. The class takes a ton of study time, but if you study you will do great. He is really nice, but uses bio 111 as a weed out class. Needs to realize this is an intro class. Way too deep into molecular biology, people were dropping like flies lol.
Yes, this class is boring, but its college he's not supposed to tap dance and entertain. The info. is straight forward and to the point. The problem is it's a ton of material crammed into a bunch of slides. Not an easy class, but I learned more in here then any other class. He's an ok guy , he just needs to realize it's a freshman class.
Probably the worst teacher I have ever had. He is not easy and reads the whole time, very boring. Never gets the class involved except with i clicker. I would NEVER take him STAY AWAY! he is a nice guy just can't teach. unless you don't work and have maybe one class besides this you will fail.
THIS IS A FRESHMAN CLASS! he acts like you are going into a BIO major. AVOID! he is horrible. hard tests & never gets classed involved. Unless you only have this class and don't work I would STAY AWAY!
He has a brilliant mind and is a wonderful person.. sooo nice.. however, his teaching skills need some work, and he needs to realize his audience are not grad students. This is a basic class that he makes extremely difficult. p.s. Don't buy the book you wont use it. Tests are off his slides. It was the hardest earned B I have ever received!!
Don't buy the book!!! All tests are from the slides. Attendance is mandatory because of the iclicker. Tests are full of trick questions. He does provide a study guide and is available outside of class. Very difficult for a general bio class. Tons of time spent studying. Class averages for exams are around 70%.
Nice guy, but his teaching methods are dreadful. He incorporates trick questions into exams & asks very specific questions over topics barely covered in the notes or lectures. He provides study guides, but no answer key. it's a proverbial treasure hunt trying to find the correct answers in the book. Be prepared to cram all semester.
STAY AWAY FROM HIM! awful, just awful. I am a 4.0 student and got a 2.3 in this class. His tests are ridiculous and tricky.Literally the worst teacher at OU. He told me I would never make it in the real world. I laughed in his face.
Very difficult. Took this class during the summer semester and it was a 3.5 hour powerpoint lecture with one 5 minute break. I'm a Dean's List student and struggled to get a 2.5. His tests are designed to trick you and he admits it. Its a freshmen level class but teaches like its a senior level course.
Besides all of the negative feedback I received prior to taking his class, I think that he turned out to be a wonderful professor. Every question I had he could answer and explain to me in his numerous office hours. The exams were lecture-based from power points that he puts online. Overall a great teacher and a funny guy.
Terrible teacher, makes the class much harder then it needs to be. Doesn't look up to answer questions, timed weekly quizzes. Have to really work for your grade. DO NOT take bio 111 with him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He grades harshly, throws random questions on the exams, counts Iclicker answers by correctness, and is just an awful professor. He goes off on random tangents about material we don't need to know and skips over material that will be on the exam. He's unclear and vague about important subjects. Do not take his class.
You will get the grade you deserve. I could have worked harder. A's are do-able. I honestly learned something in the class which I liked. He makes sure you understand the important points of the material well.
One of the best bio professors I have had. A lot of people complain about bio 111 because it is a tough course, but he gave out study guides and did everything he could to prepare students for exams. Classes can be a little dry, but that is just the nature of a bio class. Overall, great teacher.
Class is entirely based on fruit flies that i know nothing about, he is in love with them. Tests were very specific, know the material he tells you to know. Grades hard, presentations are easy and boring. Last few weeks is all food, presentations and each section of your research paper that you do as a class. Don't know how i got a bad grade.
He is a really boring teacher and reads straight from the powerpoint so i basically have to teach myself. He rarely asks any questions to the class so he doesn't know if we are understanding it or not. He just talks at his desk the whole hour. Not really a fan of his teaching he is very old school.
The thing that saved my grade in this class was the iclicker questions and the 12 minute quizzes we have with every chapter. Exams are difficult, labs are online. The material is tough, he doesn't even engage with the class, he just lectures nonstop. Unless you're really good at biology, I would not recommend him. Attendance is needed for iclicker
very enthusiastic about the material
This was a fantastic class. Dr. Sturtevant is a great professor and I would definitely take this class again. The class if very easy if you pay attention. Powerpoints are the best put together I have seen in all 50 college classes I have taken in my life. Subject matter is extremely interesting. Very friendly, open, helpful, kind, and intelligent.
He definitely prepares you for exams and gives you all the powerpoints needed for the class. He gives you practice exams and study guides which are really useful. If you try, you'll pass. Utilize everything he gives you.
All of the materials you need are there, he posts all of the powerpoints for lecture so you can print it or whatever. He also posts practice exams and study guides which you should definitely do. You get the grade you earn
Super nice, a great lecturer, all his PowerPoints are online, and he'll help clarify if you ever need it. If you go to class and take notes (somethings arn't on the powerpoints) and review the night before you'll easily get an 80% or higher. Books were only used for some clarification (everything's on notes) but they're really interesting.
Worst professor I have ever had! Do not take this class with this professor unless you want to teach yourself everything throughout the semester. Never repeats anything and is very unclear to what he wants!
he honestly knows the material and is clear in lecture but his lectures are so boring and the iclicker questions are counted heavy on your grade. he is understanding and willing to help however his grading is intense. I worked my butt off and tried really hard, plus biology is my thing not to mention, and i only got a B. seriously reconsider.
Lots of people are always saying mean things about Dr. S. I couldn't disagree more. As a Biology major I've taken him for multiple classes, and will be taking him every chance I get. He's very laid back, and all his tests are based almost exclusively on the power point lecture slides. If you show up and pay attention there is no reason to not pass.
Dr. Sturtevant is an extremely intelligent man. He knows a lot about the material covered in this class and it seems to be one of his favorite fields. If anyone should be teaching this class, it should be him. He's also very clear on what he will test you on, be prepared to write a lot on his exams though.
Dr. Sturtevant is a great professor. Second class I've had with him at OU. Though he can be a bit boring and monotone at times - he is super friendly, always willing to help, and a very thorough professor. Go to class, review powerpoints online & complete his reviews and you'll pass with no problems!
What a great professor! I hated Bio in high school, but Mark made it very interesting. Lectures are short, and he is very clear cut. Always offers to help students outside of the classroom. Although, I'm not a big fan of his clicker system.
One of my favorite bio faculty. He takes content & really makes it his own, explains concepts well & is clearly very passionate about the what he teaches. Not a cakewalk class, but as long as you are paying attention for the most part in class & review powerpoints, you'll do fine. 495 was easy, since he split up the paper in sections. Take him!
Cannot skip this class. Participation is through Iclicker points. Many quizzes, few labs. Lectures aren't long but are very boring. Wish he would've explained the concepts a little more clearly but if the notes and powerpoints are studied, exams are not to bad. Funny and passionate about what he is teaching.
this is not a blow off online class, get ready to work for your grade. there are connect activities and quizzes for every chapter, a few online labs, along with weekly moodle forums, quizzes and lectures. he does an incredible job making an online classroom and he is always available via email and willing to meet during office hours to help.
Sturtevant is an awful professor and should not be an educator. Every time I would ask him a question he would be extremely rude and TRY to make me feel like a fool for speaking. This is the worst trait a teacher of any kind could have, it disappoints me that there are professors like him. The class is extremely easy, just taught horribly.
A professor that does not like you asking questions, vague and dismissive responses.
Lectures were very long and boring. A lot of material covered in a sort time period and he doesn't make it interesting. Don't waste your time with the study guide. If you do the practice exams you'll be fine for the exams. If you're confused he is happy to help and answers his email fast. Overall not too bad you just have to put in the work.
He's really nice. I learned a lot through his lectures so I would recommend going to all of them. Exams were tough but I couldn't make it to the SI provided so that could be why. Otherwise, you have quizzes and labs to help boost your grade.
This professor I personally thought was very clear to understand. His power points are all given to you which I love! Take notes during the lecture in addition to the power point because he goes into it more in depth and points things out as he goes along. There are online labs that are pretty easy. connect quizzes and he takes iclicker questions.
He is very knowledgeable and passionate about biology. A lot of studying is needed to do well on tests. I would strongly recommend attending SI.
Awesome professor, he's really into what he does. That being said, sometimes his lectures are a little boring, but his questions on exams are directly related to his slides and the things he teaches during lecture so I suggest that you go and pay attention. There are Iclicker points during every lecture. Overall, an easy A class.
Boring lectures, and mandatory attendance. Expects you to understand more than he explains. Make sure you do the online connect assignments, they help way more than trying to decipher his notes.
Loved this class! Everything he says in class is what is on the exam. His power points are well put together. He is passionate about the subject and it really shows. He'll tell you what to focus on for the exams, this class isnt easy but he makes it doable. Take evolution with him!
If you want to pass, attend every lecture. Make sure to do the study guide questions because the tests come straight from those questions or something he said would be on the test while he was giving his lecture. If the study guide seems hard, google the question. I used quizlet for questions I had a hard time answering since I didn't buy a book.
Mr. Sturtevant was an awesome professor. He's passionate about biology so he kept it interesting. I LOVED the way he taught (power point notes), DO NOT buy the book right away!! I spent $200 on the book and i never used it! Give it a few lectures and if you don't like his teaching methods, then buy the book.
He is an understanding professor who is really passionate about what he teaches. Although there is a lot of material covered in a little timeframe, the class is definitely passable if you are willing to put in the work. I highly suggest reading over the notes after every chapter and then doing the Connect reading and questions that follow.
you have to go to lecture to pass. all the questions he has on the study guide are what is on the exam so if you study those youll be fine, gives in class questions for points and some are extra credit. DONT BUY THE BOOK everything you need to know is on his powerpoints
Never used the book, but you do need the access code. Super understanding, let me take online quizzes during office hours with extended time. Know his powerpoints and go to lecture and you'll pass. You will need an iclicker. Tests are straightforward, if you studied his powerpoints youll do well.
BIO111 was a fairly easy class. Lectures can be a bit boring but are super easy to follow. Just print out his power point slides before class then take notes on them. This class is just a lot of memorization. His only quizzes are timed and can be a bit annoying. He has 3 online labs throughout the semester that are actually pretty fun.
Overall a pretty easy class the lectures are pretty dry and make sure you are attending class for iClickers. Professor Sturtevant wasn't the most approachable person throughout the semester and there were times I asked questions after class which he gave either vague or condescending answers for.
Professor Sturtevant was by far the worst educator I have ever encountered. You can study as hard as you want for his exams, but at least half will consist of topics you have never heard of. A very unapproachable individual, he does not welcome questions. I am a 4.0 college student, and was forced to withdraw from this class before failing.
Best teacher at OU!
Dr. Sturtevant is an excellent professor. I recommend individuals to definitely take his class, although he is quite boring at times but he is overall competent. Attend lecture, take notes and you'll get an A. Those who complain about him are the ones who will be selected out of the Biology program because they are blind of what a good professor is
Absolutely wonderful man. He really cares about what he is teaching and does care about his students. He handles questions amazingly well and is willing to explain things a different way to better understand. If you meet with him one on one he is wonderful. He is very sweet.
An amazing professor. He is passionate about biology and wants his students to do well. Exams are based off the powerpoint lecture slides. Go to class! You need the access code class, but you really do not need the book. Take BIO 111 with him. Anyone that says anything bad about him clearly did not put in any effort or go to class.
Dr. Sturtevant is a fair professor. Exams are lecture based- he kind of goes along with the text, but throws his own stuff in there. I wouldn't waste your money on the book. Study guides posted for every lecture are KEY to passing the exams- as long as you know everything on them you will do fine :)
im A Rate my P Addict and faithfully use this site to find teachers. This is my first review and for a good reason. had sturtevant fall 2016 bio111. BEST decision ! Got A 4.0 No book needed ,study guide and slides Got me That 4.0 with tutoring and the Si. I did indeed study 10-15 hrs A WEEK and used youtube to get through it !Highly Recommend
This professor is very good at explaining, but you really need to see him outside of class to strengthen concepts. He will work problems with you over and over during office hours until you understand. Very patient.
Lecture was very boring, and his exams were pretty hard. You need to go to class to understand the material.
Though he expects a lot from you, you actually learn A LOT about evolution. If you want to do well, then attend every lec & record him (only way you'll get most of the answers on the study guides).
This ya boy J. Da homie Dr. Sturt keeps it 100. Go to class because the powerpoints don't have all the answers sometimes. The study guides are really helpful for the exam. If you do that and know the material in the powerpoints well, you'll do well in the class.
Sturt is a great guy, really knows what he is talking about and is approachable after class or during office hours. BOOK IS NOT NECCESSARY for evo bio. He lectures off of power point but showing up to class is helpful bc not all the info is on the pp slides. Has study guides on moodle that are an immense help for upcoming exams so def utilize them
Dr. Sturtevant gives interesting lectures, but don't skip out on class or you will have a difficult time understanding the material. He tells you everything you need to know for exams right in class. He gives extra credit sheets, but only for those who attend that day. Overall an inspirational and interesting professor! Loved the class!!
His capstone class is pretty unorganized. He just talks off in tangents. Not comfortable talking to him in general because he cuts you off and doesnt hear you out about anything -statement, question, etc.
Took him for my bio capstone class. Not really organized. Not too sure what were supposed to get out of the class, either. Not appropriate when answering questions-doesnt want to teach, but wants to be right (talks over you, kind of makes you feel dumb)
Dr. Stur is truly a smart man but I wouldnt take him ever again. I sent 5 days studding for each exam and I still only managed to get a c on them. His exams are so hard, he does it on purpose. His lectures are boring and long and this online labs and quizzes r the only good thing about him( do quizzes in a group). DONT TAKE HIM If u struggle w BIO!
Not organized at all. His website is all over the place. His exams r ridiculously hard and he does it on purpose. If u struggle In Bio DO NOT TAKE HIM. DO URSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I thought Professor Sturtevant was an outstanding professor. I took this class as a freshman in college and I think it was a great learning experience and I truly learned a lot from his lectures. If you go to each lecture and actually pay attention, then you shouldn't have a problem passing the class.
The class is pretty easy if you go to lecture. All his tests and quizzes are based on the lecture. You wont have to read the book if you pay attention. If you have never taken bio in high school before you will have to put in more effort into the class. He is very helpful and answers any questions if you go to his office hours. Great professor!
PowerPoints are mostly images meaning that you have to take note of everything he says, which is never repeated twice. Tests are difficult and he asks things not discussed in class and is a picky grader. He isnt that nice either and very monotone. He does explain well, however its hard to keep up. I dont recommend taking this professor
Mark is an interesting man, tends to go off topic and reads directly off of the powerpoints all class, he's very boring and monotoned, not my favorite professor, don't recommend taking him, his exams are also IMPOSSIBLE! Hours of studying go to waste bc he ends up putting stuff on the exam that was never even talked about
Dr. Sturtevant can be monotone during lectures, but he is VERY passionate about science and research. This class was interesting, one group project, two exams, and one research paper. Dr. Sturtevant tells you exactly what he wants to see in your projects and paper so listen to what he says! Be sure to attend lectures, it really helps.
He does not teach from the textbook the PowerPoints hold all the information for the exams and quizzes. Always bring your iclicker, thats how you get participation points.
I liked this professor, but the only annoying thing about him is that his tests are very tough. I tended all lectures and took notes, but always thought the exams were very challenging. But, he posts lots of practice exams from moodle and some questions are sometimes repeated!! Therefore, always do those!
I loved his class. Pay attention to lectures and you'll be fine. Really smart guy, lectures weren't boring. Curves tests. Easy A if you pay attention and read the chapter.
Lectures were long & boring. Most of the time he'd go off topic about a completely unrelated topic to the chapter and almost half the class is wasted b/c of it. I went to every lecture and took notes. I did more reading on my own than attending however he uses iClickers now for points so you have to show up. Never answers questions. Never again..
Was a funny man but classes were lecture heavy. I taught myself more than he taught me and barely passed the class. Tests were reflective of the lectures and online labs +iClicker helped boost grades as well.
AMAZING! he's so caring. He's willing to help.
First exam was rough, kept telling the class to ask him for study tips so i decided to ask and that was the best idea ever. Tells you what you need to study for and how to study it. I dont really use the textbook, i use more of the resources he gives us. Just dont be afraid to ask him for help and youll do great in his class as long as you study
There was nothing I liked about Mark. His lectures were painful to sit though and he explained things very complicated. I had to read the book after all my lectures to teach myself the subject. When I visited him during his office hours he was very rude an unhelpful. Exams are difficult as well because a lot of the questions are critical thinking
No homework or projects or group work. Just lectures quizzes and tests.
He is one the best bio teachers I ever had. He gives good hints on the test. His activities are very helpful for he tests that are multiple choice fill in the blanks and essay, though the second test was statistic problems which was also on his class activities. He makes evolution fun. :)
His lecturs were clear and he gave good hints as to what would be onthe test. His tests were great and straightforward from the lectures.
He really understands students and speaks their language especially with the power points that make a lot sense in how we relate.
His class is cool and he really understands the students.
His lectures are easy to follow through and understand and his study guides are very helpful.
This was the easiest evolution class I had ever taken in my entire life. Sturtevant is the best.
Every activity that done in his classes and every video he wants you to watch at home are very helpful as they always on his tests.
He really cares about his students anything you miss in his class you can come to his office and he is really happy to help you.
He teaches the right stuff his power points are great and are very helpful he really knows what he is teaching. I love this professor.
He is a teacher that can teach it all. Master of evolution.
He makes his 400 level class work like a 300 or even a 200 class, but he still wants you to know the stuff.
His biology class was the easiest biology class ever.
He knows what he is teaching and gives good activities that help for the exams.
He makes his 300 class more like a 100 class. I loved it. He made the class great.
Really good guy. He helps you prepare for exams.
I was nervous as I am not good with bio, but when I took his class and did well on my first test I was relieved.
I love biology now thanks to him. It was hard for me but I managed to understand with his hielp.
Eassiest 400 level class that I have ever taken in my whole life.
He makes us do activities that warm us for his tests. His tests are really easy. He gives us a list of things that could be on the tests.
His class was the easiest 499 bio class I had ever taken.
His class is very doable. Every big activity he hands out in class is on his exams which are easy and not cumulative.
Best Bio Class I have ever taken. A friend strongly recomended me to him for a 300 level class and he was right
Bio was boring until I took his class.
When I first took his class. His class for Bio100 it was awesome. I have been trying to take his class ever since as some of the bio teachers in course he does not teach are not that great, but Mark he is amazing.
Extremely mind numbing professor.
The is was the easiest 400 level class that I have ever taken.
Basic Bio Evlituon and Rewading they were fun and easy classes with this guy teaching.
Looking at the recent reviews, it seems to look as if he is writing the reviews himself, his class is not easy and his exams do not come straight from his powerpoint so be careful.
Professor Sturtevant is a God. He wears a Hawaiian shirt to class everyday, makes you use answer multiple choice questions during lecture for a grade using iclickers, and his test are aight. As long as you pay attention during class and study, you'll be fine. Professor Sturtevant is Oakland University.
Exams are impossible to do well on. He's the only one that teaches Evol Bio. Check out the grade distributions for prior terms. Only like 1 person gets an A "ever". The bulk of the students get a C in the class. GPA killer. It's a shame that he grades so hard. This will be the most interesting class you will do so poorly in.
Funniest Bio course I have ever taken in my entire life. Trust me he is the best.
He made evolution so fun. God has blessed me given such an amazing professor. I loved Sturtevenat. His in class activites his easy tests. What more could a student ask for.
Sturtevant js the great all time favorite. He has a sheet of questions you can answer in your notes from class in class activities that help for the exam. His tests are some of the best.
Worst Professor Ever..
He has a set of questions for you to do which you can answer from your notes in class. They're really helpful. He does in class activities to make sure you know what is on his tests.
Every activity he does in class is on the exam. He gives good hints and makes sure you. He is very helpful in office hours.
His class is good but you must show up or go to his office to answer the questions he gives you. His in class activities are very useful for the tests especially the the p and q genetic
Thereading this class is really straightforward. This teacher is helpful and really friendly. For almost a 500 level class it is really easy.
His exams are the best h e is very friendly. His in class activities are amazing. The activities help prepare for the exams.
Professor Sturtevant makes biology make sense. He gives you all of the tools you need to succeed, and wants you to do well. Exams are very fair, he posts practice exams for each one they are very helpful. Hes a nice, funny guy who is really passionate about bio.
I love this man, he's the best professor I've ever had. He makes bio make sense.
If you have Dr. Sturtevant for Bio 1200, you should at least get a B- or over. Most of the people who have below a B- don't pay attention. TRUST ME! His class is 10 times easier than a regular bio class in High school. For the exams, all you need to know is the general stuff. In my opinion, the class is easy but I don't think that it'll prepare us.
Overall, for me the class was really hard. Theres a lot of material in the chapters and he goes by it very fast and you need to always stay caught up or youre screwed. Overall, hes a very nice professor though and he offers help on the material and reviews. Its just hard.
Bio was a ton of material, however he gave lecture outlines that were really helpful for the exams. Iclicker questions can be tough. While his lectures can be a lot, he did give 15 extra credit points at the end of semester, and labs are super easy. (The shirts he wears are interesting:)
Such a sweet guy! Attendance isn't mandatory, but has daily iClicker questions that count towards your grade (easy points) which are only available in class. Tons of thorough lectures and exam resources. Need to study from your lecture notes and his exam resources provided online to pass exams. Prior knowledge will help, but won't pass you alone.
Clear, compelling, and interesting lectures. Don't buy the physical textbook, as you only need online access for his online quizzes (which are harder than you think they will be) and his online labs. Study study study because he prepares you pretty well, you just need to be really confident in the information. He seems really approachable as well.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED HIM. All his classes are lectures and he uses iclickers as points to see if you are there! Quizzes and labs are done online. Tests are hard. His class isn't that hard but it just depends how much time you put into it! He is sooo patient about biology its amazing! He is very approachable and nice!
Only take this professor if he's one of the last options. His class seemed easy the first couple weeks as his quizzes were all online and also online labs. But right when his first exam came around, suddenly everything I thought I knew in the class, was NOT on the exam. iClicker questions are a huge grade in the class too, hard exams. Cool guy tho.
He's okay. I think he sometimes makes certain concepts more difficult than it needs to be, and his powerpoints alone aren't helpful. He makes lecture outlines which are nice. I just wish that he'd do a better job of explaining certain concepts. Overall, he could be confusing at times, but he's still a really nice guy.
He is SO AMAZING!! He explained concepts well and was very clear about what would be on the exams. He really wants his students to succeed and loves to talk to them and help in office hours. Lectures were boring, but he gave us practice exams, extra credit at the end, and easy iClicker question points. Exams were just like the practice exams.
The lectures were very interesting to listen to concerning evolution. The exams however were a bit difficult to grasp, but luckily, he provides study guides on moodle and they help A LOT with the 4 exams given. There is no final exam and there is only one option for extra credit and thats being present during lecture to work on a worksheet together
Gives really great lectures and is easy to talk to. He gives many hints about test questions during lecture so although it is not mandatory you should definitely show up. The material covered is difficult but he gives great tools for studying.
I only recorded his lectures to listen to them at night because they help me sleep faster. This guy is obnoxious and very picky about EVERYTHING. His PPT are just pictures and you have to create your own notes, and whatever you put in as an answer will always be WrOOoooNNNggg just because your words are not in HIS answer key. TAKE someone else !
Prof. Sturtevant does not give a crap about his students. A girl in his evolution class stated that he hated teaching Bio 1200 which is actually really funny. His exams are pretty general. Don't need to read the textbook. After taking his class, a lot of students were happy bc his teaching style was pretty bad and you can tell that he didn't care.
Freindly guy. He was really helpful druing the pandmic. HIs class may have been tough though but he made things easier.
Dr. Sturtevant is a great professor. Very friendly, teaches very clear and efficiently, and is always accessible outside the classroom. Dr. Sturtevant does his job to make you succeed. He is very helpful and it was a pleasure to have him as a professor.
I took him for BIO and he was great! He offers extra credit, his homework is easy, he curves every exam, and his lectures are easy to understand. He is very quick to reply and super understanding. I would take him again in a heart beat! Hes an awesome professor!
I LOVE STURTEVANT! He is so, so passionate about biology and he genuinely does care about students and he WANTS to help- you have to make the effort to reach out to him. He is a tough grader but everything on the exams are straight from his lectures. Do not hesitate to take him! The only warning I have is that he does pick out very specific things.
Bombed the first exam. Reached out to him for help and I only improved. Timely email responses. He loves when students reach out so contact him early!!! Your GPA will thank you. Didn't read a page of the textbook. Offers extra credit. Labs are very easy.
Show up for classes do the work and you'll be fine. He is very helpful and is clear on what he is teaching.
Professor Sturtevant is mediocre. A majority of the class failed exam two and he offers no help to students outside of the lecture. Exam three came along and he was more than happy to help all of a sudden when he realized the majority of his class was failing. His teaching is disorganized and he explains simple concepts in difficult terms.
I took the class on line, the material available was complete. There were weekly team assignments and quizzes. Nevertheless, all the work done really helps you to understand the materials and prepare for the exams. Tests, were hard and material can not be absorbed one day before the exam. Dr Strutevant is very approachable and ready to help
He is a very great professor! You have to take your own notes, and good ones. If you do that and study them along with the Power Points I don't see how you won't get an A. The topics are not difficult, but if you don't take notes the Power Points are pretty useless because they are mostly just pictures and he goes into them in class.
Professor Sturtevant is hit or miss, but if you engage with his teaching methods, the class can be manageable. The exams are challenging, so using resources like ChatGPT and unstuckstudy AI for study prep can be really helpful.
I think ppl that complain about his teaching style/class probably did not take advantage of all the resources made available to the class. If you listen, show up, and do the work you will pass. Study guides = exams so record lectures & actually do them. He will give you all the advice/help needed if asked, he truly wants students to do well.
I actually made profile for this class/professor. Very clear information, very clear with grading. Everything on lectures was on exams. His outlines are easy to follow and are not busy work by any means. If you listen to lecture, fill out those outlines, study and turn on work in time, there is no reason not to get an A.
