Don't read the book. In fact I suggest only using the book as a reference. Talk to him after lecture to clarify things. He is very kind and patient and willing to help you. I also found the internet to be useful. Many of his test questions come from the notes. Make sure you understand the concept entirely( seriously.) He did curve on some test.

the class is challenging. you need to attend every lecture. i learned that if i just studied the notes from class and looked up anything i was unclear about in the book, it worked the best. i did much better by just knowing my notes from class. if you put the time in you can make a good grade.

You get out of this class exactly what you put into it. Buy a digital recorder, sit up front, write down everything from the digital recorder, know the practice tests. This class will be the bane of your existance as Mark said the first day of class. I got a 58 on first test, 92 on 3rd and trust me, I earned the 92!

He has been my favorite professor at UT so far. You do not need the textbook if you go to the lectures and take good notes. For physiology, he teaches a morning class where the tests are only multiple choice or a night class where you only 2 exams consisting of essays (which he tells you what they are) with mult. choice and short answer.

Don't just memorize the answer, but look to see what the question would have been if the answer were one of the other choices...make sense? GO TO CLASS and make sure he knows who you are!

Even if he says in wont be on the exam.

I have nothing good to say about Alston. He overtly favors women, and he could care less how well anyone does. If you can get his old tests from someone, there is no need to study. He either: a) uses versions of old test questions or b) makes questions that have no base from his actual lectures. Thinks he is a know-all. Avoid him if you can.

Mr. Alston's class is a waste. You will be required to learn the material, but will not enjoy this class no matter how much you like physiology. I had him for physiology, and it was difficult, but if you study everything he says in class, it's not impossible. You can't cram for this class. If you learn the material as you go, you will be fine. The lab was an easy 100 and he gives about 20 extra credit questions on the final to buffer low test scores. Take good notes and don't cram.

Do not take this class with Dr. Alston. He only lectures the whole class, and the only technology he uses is the projector to display figures from the book, which he poorly explains. He even hand draws some figures, which are messy and hard to follow. Your grade is from 4 tests and lab. Take this class at a community college!

I loved anatomy with Prof. Alston, go to the extra lab times and go to his office hours if you can. Do not leave lab early because you really do need that time to grasp all the models and do well on lab exams. You have to work for your grade but if you do like he says in the beginning you will do fine.

It is possible to study the material for weeks and still fail his tests because they are purposefully made to trick you. his teaching style is hard to follow and the notes he gives as "study guides" are hard to follow.

I'm a graduate NE student, and it was by far my most difficult class this semester. 4 multiple choice exams, but he likes trick questions. *BEST ADVICE: Go to office hours (he gives answers here) and FOCUS ON FIGURES AND TABLE IN THE TEXT. Material from class is just a *guideline* for studying.

Alston likes to make topics extremely confusing so that you have to go to office hours so he can waste more of your time and pretend to care. Tests pull from material he never talked about, but he will claim he did. Lab is teaching yourself; I had to go 2 extra times a week. You can be very on top of things/intelligent and still not excel.
