Actually the best professor at Western hands down. Very inspirational and clear. Every lecture is a treat. Very good at explaining complex topics. Can't say enough good things about this man.
Keywords were limited, here are the extras: Amazing Lectures Caring Beautiful Hair And Beard Loves Physics more than life Cares so much about his classes he will miss Disney Land to teach
best prof i've ever had
Easily the best prof I've had yet. Cares very much for his students. Lectures are always clear and enjoyable.
Best teacher i had at western
Best Prof I've had, ever! He understands how to teach the content and is thoroughly interested in the topics he teaches. You will Love taking any course with him because he genuinely wants you to succeed.
One of the bests if not the best prof I've had in Western. He cares about the understanding of his students so much that he will do all he can to provide you with proper materials. He provides notes as well as in person and over email explanations.
Mark is a real gem! He does an excellent job at teaching difficult concepts, and is extremely thorough. He uses very clear language and displays a level of enthusiasm that makes you want to go to class every day.
Really happy I got the opportunity to be taught by Prof. Baker. He cares a lot about his students and their success. He is always available to help his students when they need it. His lectures are very informative and in depth, he gives a deeper understanding than just what is needed. You can tell he was very enthusiastic about what he teaches.
Baker emphasized understanding the material and the significance of it's applications which made a dry subject much more interesting. His lectures are engaging to say the least. He made a point of learning every student's name within the first two weeks of class in a class of 60+ people. He is extremely helpful when answering student questions.
took this class as an elective and it was one of the best classes ive ever taken. baker is the coolest prof ever, very enthusiastic and loves teaching. lectures were easy to follow and good to attend bc baker is hilarious and good at teaching. content is straight from the textbook but lectures are worth it to attend for better understanding
Great prof! Genuinly loves what he does and it honestly allowed me to do better when I took his class. Inspired me to actually like physics lol.
Baker is honestly the best instructor i have ever had in my life. He is an amazing lecturer, presenting complainted concepts in clear way and makes learning a fun and fulfilling experience. If you have the chance to take a class taught by Baker take it! It will be one of the best learning opportunities and experiences of your life! DUDE IS AMAZING!
The professor put in extra effort to type up lecture notes for the course that helped a lot in understanding the course material. His lectures are both informative and enjoyable. He is a great professor for first/second year courses as he understands whats important for students to take from these courses that will help them in the future.
Mark is a great instructor - delivers very clear lectures and tests concepts at a reasonable level of difficulty. Would definitely take any course he teaches.
Here are the additional tags that I wanted to click but the site doesn't let me: Inspirational, clear grading criteria, hilarious, amazing lectures, caring. Lastly: I'm a chemistry major since first year chem courses were the most enjoyable. Now if I had Baker for my first year math or physics courses, I would've gone into applied math for sure.
The best professor I have ever had period. No debate. Extremely passionate, skips the balogne, great teaching strategies, and fair evaluations. Best course experience so far.
Baker is very enthusiastic about teaching his students. He actually cares about his students and their success. He makes himself available to his students and lectures extremely well giving a much deeper understanding of the topics. Do not pass up on an opportunity to take a class he is instructing.
Such an amazing person and an even better professor. He takes the time to type out his own notes for each lesson and explains the concepts clearly in his own words. His lectures are always entertaining, so even if you skip class you'll be sorry you missed one of his lectures. I wish he were my professor for all of my undergrad courses.
Mark is an outstanding professor that puts in a lot of effort into his lectures. He also makes himself available for extra help outside of class. His lectures were informative and easy to understand. Overall, he was the best math professor I had in Western.
Mark Baker put more effort into the classes I took with him than any prof I ever had. I did not miss a single class, not only because lectures were very useful, but also because I was genuinely excited about learning the physics he was teaching. He truly inspired me to be passionate about physics, which is something a lot of profs can't do.
I didn't miss a single of Baker's 9:30 classes nor was late to any bc I didn't wanna miss out on a second of those WILD lectures! His great passion for physics and AMAZING teaching skills was like no other. One of his derivations in particular, gives me goosebumps to this day. "Good physics comes from the heart" and he is proof of that! :)
I feel like Prof. Mark Baker really teaches us the stuff that matters in physics. Classes are always interesting and informative.
Mark Baker is a total gem. A legend amongst teachers. He is extremely charismatic, laid back, and funny, but also really cares about teaching. He loves to see people learn and succeed-- and you will do that in his courses. He does not want you to be miserable, so show up, do your work, and you'll have no trouble.
Hands down without a doubt the best professor I have ever or will ever have; Baker is in tune with each of his students and goes above and beyond to make sure every student is seeing the big picture in lectures and in the course. His assignments and tests are set up so that you are actually learning material, not just memorizing. Amazing job Baker!
Baker is truly an outstanding professor, he really fulfills the complete definition of a teacher by always making sure everyone understands. Every class was made memorable and joyous in one way or another. His quirky personality, caring nature, and of course amazing beard will always make your day better. Even when I had other midterms, I attended.
Mark Baker is outstanding. The lectures and notes he provided during the 3 classes I've had with him were all extremely clear and in-depth. He was available for help even outside the course, as he helped me get a summer research job. He brought a contagious enthusiasm to every class and inspired me to want to become a better physicist and teacher.
Baker did a fantastic job with the Intermediate Calculus course as well as the Oscillations & Waves course. His love for Physics is obvious in his lectures. Unlike most professors in Physics, Marks main focus was on teaching/inspiring students as opposed to personal research interests. Thank you Mark for inspiring me to pursue Physics further.
Professor Baker was great, super knowledgeable. If you are interested and want to learn he will make sure you do. He makes the lectures enjoyable and digestible. Zero regrets taking his class.
Baker is an outstanding professor. I would take another one of his classes without hesitation, given the opportunity. He truly goes above and beyond all expectations to deliver engaging lectures and get to know all his students - Baker is a rarity among profs. He really wants everyone to do well, and is clear with what he expects. Take his class!!
Baker is hands-down one of the highest quality instructors I have encountered. His enthusiasm for the subject matter (in my case, relativity and covariant electromagnetism) is infectious. He types his own very clear, very high quality notes which really help you follow the lectures and prepare for exams. He is really approachable and kind. 100/100.
Mark Baker is my favorite Physics prof. He goes out of his way to check in on his students by walking through our building, stopping, and asking how we're finding the course. He's approachable and relatable, and offers extra review sessions. Overall he conveys the course material with passion leaving his entire class excited to be learning physics!
Great professor. If there's anything that you miss in class, he will literally throw himself into your schedule to offer any help that you need. He was very clear as to what he expected. Walking into a class full of classic rock and other oldies was awesome, but keep him away from your chalk, unless you like it shattered off the board.
Baker somehow managed to make a 9:30am physics lecture entertaining and really helpful. He wrote and distributed all his own (really clear) text notes and taught the lectures in a way that made all the concepts much easier to grasp. I have never had a prof who puts so much effort into his students and classes. Definitely recommended!
wish I could use more tags. very enthusiastic about physics. His enthusiasm inspires students to learn. Reaches out to ensure all students are keeping up and understanding material
ABsolutely Amazing teacher. He was born to teach. He really wants to help you understand the material and do everything in his power to help you learn. Great guy overall
Most dedicated teacher Ive seen at any institution. Types out his own lectures posted online that are engaging, so well written & concise that you wouldnt need the textbook published by multiple authors & editors. Assignments usually incorporate real life applications & spark interest. Always has the time & care to help. Very down to earth & nice
He really goes out of his way to make sure the course is accessible to everyone & will reach out to you individually to discuss how youre feeling about the course & how he can help you with any aspects you struggle with. The passionhe has for the subject & his down to earth vibe really rub off & make an excellent atmosphere for learning & success.
Mark Baker is a fantastic teacher. Baker is able to take complex notions in math and physics and distill them down so that they are comprehensible to everyone. Baker focuses on the fundamentals, emphasizes rigour, and highlights the important concepts, explaining why they are essential. He is an absolute gem who has greatly inspired me.
He was the best professor I have ever had. His lectures are always engaging and he explains things really clearly, even if it is a difficult subject. He goes out of his way to help his students and is very accommodating to those who need it. He is also a genuinely nice man who clearly cares for his students' success.
Prof Baker is easily the best professor I've ever had. Lectures were always clear despite the course material being very difficult, Prof Baker is able to take the most difficult of concepts and explain them is such a clear and insightful way. The amount of dedication Prof Baker has for any course he teaches is astounding. A fantastic professor.
By far the best prof Ive had! Knowledgeable, prepared, insightful and genuinely good person. Would definitely take another class with him!!
Outstanding professor. Most inspiring experience I have had in an undergraduate course. He is so passionate about what he is teaching and it rubs off on his students making them passionate about doing well in his course. I would take every course with him teaching it!
he is a REAL teacher , must be one day the head of department and that is all due to the combination of real knowledge and passion
Mark Baker is the best physics teacher I ever had. I had been into the subject before but he inspired me to dig deeper and discover a world of physics wilder than I had ever dreamed in his second year fundamentals course. I still use his notes in my upper year classes and his life lessons have continued to support me through tough times to this day
makes physics interesting
Prof. Baker is an amazing prof who genuinely cares about his students and the content he teaches. His lecture notes are so good that attendance is not needed but he's a great teacher making it worth it to go. He tries hard to teach in a way that you really understand the concept not just how to do problems and is the most inspiring prof I've had
Engaging lectures, great sense of humor, and a look that makes you feel like you're learning from someone truly enlightened. Highly recommend.
Great prof and his lectures are great. He makes me want to go to my 9:30 physics lecture, and it shows from the attendance. Very good notes and makes learning physics fun
Baker is arguably one of the best professors at Western. He takes a challenging course and makes it both engaging and easy to understand. He is very considerate, recognizing that students have other classes to focus on, and he adjusts his lectures accordingly. While attendance isn't mandatory, his teaching style makes you want to show up.
Long hair, long beard, a cane, and no socks, an image of wisdom itself. They said PHYS 1402 was a beast, a relentless storm of equations and confusion. But under his guidance, the course became a gentle breeze. He didn't just teach; he enlightened. He saved us from failure and made us fall in love with Electrical Circuits. The Physics Messiah.
Great Prof! Lecture notes are clear and you'll rarely be surprised by anything going into exams. He also comes to class barefoot a lot, which is strange but pretty funny.
Physics Jesus.
If you get this professor once in your life, life is so good. He is the GOAT of physics and knows how to explain it so well that you don't even got to watch extra videos just to understand what is going on. He is funny, passionate, and really cares for the students. Always answers questions and keeps students during lectures. GOAT!!
He teaches in a way that makes everything easy to understand and he actually wants us to enjoy learning. Best prof ever. Would create a religion based on him.
Best professor I've ever had
When this prof says the tests will be on the lectures he is not lying! Best lecturer I have had this semester and actually made going to the 9:30 lecture fun. I really appreciated his approach to teaching, he wants us to understand the theory more then just understand random practice problems.
Honestly, at a loss for words. This is why I went to university, professors like this make it all worth it.
If there were Grammys for profs, I'd give them all to Baker. If you ask any eng kid what's the hardest course they will either say physics 2 or calc 2. Physics 2 has such a bad rep but Baker made it the best course. Not only does he teach wonderfully, but he makes sure his students are doing alright and adjusts small things for our comfort. GOAT!
Boy oh boy. Baker what I would do for you. This is the reason that Western University is the school I choose to learn at. His lectures make you feel like you are AT an institution. A community to learn. Baker could turn anyone to enjoy Physics even if thats not your favourite course. Regardless of the mark I get, his tests are what he says they are
My one and only rating ever, and it goes to Baker. If you have him, Jesus Christ's incarnate is there to make life that much better.
Great guy!
Amazing professor, answered every single question asked of him and more. Extremely passionate during the lectures and makes sure the TAs and tutorials are great. The exams and midterms match the content covered and are at a fair level of difficulty. Also, very helpful and answers emails quickly, and helped with figuring out the physics dual path.
There's a lot of amazing things that could be said about this professor, Most notably his lectures and how easy he makes complex concepts seem. He makes sure that he knows who to pick as passionate TAs for tutorial sessions, and has made my passion for physics-related courses exceed beyond what i imagined at first. 10/10 professor.
Baker is the best. He is the most passionate professor you will ever find, and he and the TA team work very hard to make this class as enjoyable as possible. Unfortunately, I did not like the course content at all, but he made it tolerable at least. I do wish there was a little more math though, as his lectures are very theory-heavy.
For reference, I went into this class wanting to do a dual degree in chemical engineering and biomedical engineering, and just because of him I have changed my mind and want to pursue electrical engineering with a double major in physics. The GOAT of Western's Physics & Astronomy Department
The lecture notes can be dense, but if you do some pre-lecture prep then lectures are amazing. Baker shows nothing but compassion for his students and lots of devotion to physics itself. Have fun and enjoy baker because he is truly one of a kind (goated)
Dude is the holy grail of physics; literally looks like Jesus. He is such a great teacher and knows how students think which is super helpful and awesome. He does this mandatory tutorial, which helps understand content super well & doesn't let you fall behind. Lectures are a bit of a snooze fest the odd time, so keep adding daily gifs Mr. Baker!!!
This is genuienly the worst class ive ever had, do NOT take him. His lectures are so insanely confusing he doesnt use number and there is no practice at all so all you can do is review it and hope. The only review he gave us was the assignments and what are we supposed to do with one question on projectile motion. Slides and slide notes all useless
as someone who's never taken physics in high school and joined an introductory physics course, this was the HARDEST class i have ever took. i've taught everything to myself, his lectures are pointless. he doesn't use numbers, only letters and lecs are so confusing to understand. no practice problems & no textbook, only assignments here & there.
He is so good at teaching. As a person who have never taken high school physics, this prof was goated. He explained every single concept in a way that even a 3 year old could understand. If I could take his course again, I would definitely take it.
I think this professor thinks we are in engineering or something because why are integrals even being mentioned in this course...
It's a bird course if you took physics in high school, if not you're cooked. He overcomplicates easy concepts and explains things in the worst way possible. There's also mandatory tutorials, biweekly assignments, yet no practice problems. I've met so many people who are struggling/teaching themselves - hes nice tho and midterm was easy
Physics God. Live laugh love baker
Made me fall in love with physics because he is so passionate about what he teaches. Obviously the content is rather difficult to wrap your head around but he explains everything in a way that made me want to understand more. Accessible outside class. Physics Jesus.
Overall a good prof. He is very passionate and while some of his explanations can be complicated, they are generally easy to follow. It is clear that he cares about his students' success.
The goat, couldn't ask for better.
Best first year professor. Extremely passionate about physics, focuses of overall understanding of concepts rather than specific questions. Answers any questions and cares about students success
Good Prof. Love.
Before this literal goddess I was very stressed about physics since I never took it in high school. But he changed my mind! He is genuinely the best prof I have ever seen in my life. Makes concept so much easier and teachers under the impression that you never physics I literally look forward in attending class since they are so fun
Best prof ever! Comprehensive lecture notes, relevant assignments, reasonable exams, and he's always there to answer any questions you have. Also, he's super sweet (always reminding us that physics is hard, but we just need to do xyz..). He has me questioning if I should minor in physics
Genuinly an amazing prof, went out of his way to make the lectures engaging and fun to listen to despite it being a hard course, told life stories and life advice, had fun bits that made it engaging. very cool prof but can lowkey be a schizo sometimes. 10/10
Right now it's not looking good but let me see after the exam and i'll be back because he lowkey locked in randomly
Ok honestly as someone who's never taken physics this is the best description I can give. Super nice guy, works hard to give students as many opportunities to get their grades up, etc. his lectures are really confusing because he only does like gen formulas not examples. Get yourself a study group or tutor you will need it to understand the content
Great guy! Baker is a master at teaching great ideas in physics while making it enjoyable, understandable, relatable, and even philosophical at times.
This professor is completely theoretical and barely gives practice problems. He is very transparent with what will be on the exams but is very difficult if you have never taken physics before, I barely passed. I recommend getting a tutor right away as it is an extremely shocking way to teach first year physics.
Very conceptual making it difficult to study. Engaging and kind professor and explains concepts pretty well
Loved his demos in class and is a super nice guy. If you keep up with the lecture notes you'll be fine.
THE GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT 🐐🐐🐐🐐
Awesome prof! I'm a very math/physics-weak student, but he made every lecture enjoyable. His stuff is easy to follow as long as you keep up with your work. Physics is a hard subject for many... but I enjoyed having him as my prof! (lowkey chill guy too, the GOAT 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐)
Baker is a great guy, eclectic, and obviously really passionate about what he teaches. Provides in-depth lecture notes, which are basically word-for-word everything he says in lecture, so you'll be fine reading those instead of going to class, but he's so funny you'll go anyway. only issue is he explains things conceptually rather than w/ examples
The most amazing professor Ive had, would take any class he's teaching.
Didn't take physics in grade 12 so I was extremely scared to take this class but it ended up being my favourite. 10/10 class, 10/10 prof, u can tell he enjoys what he teaches and he always made lectures so so so fun. def one of my fav classes. and also MAKE SURE u study + understand conceptual/theoretical stuff for the midterms/exams!!!
If you have the opportunity to take a class with Dr. Baker, please take it! I have never taken physics before, so I was a bit anxious that I would not understand the content, but Dr. Baker's lectures were clear and his explanations thorough. You can tell he really cares about the students and he puts in so much effort into his lectures.
Dr. Baker is a fantastic physics professor. His lectures are engaging, using GIFs and physical objects to explain concepts. He is almost always available after class to answer any questions from the lecture.
Genuinely one of the best teachers I've ever had. I thought i'd fail physics but he makes it near impossible. Always makes sure to post the clearest lecture notes the day before the class so you can read and familiarize yourself and he does an exceptional job explaining concepts. His classes are engaging and very enjoyable to go to.
Beautiful human from teaching to looks. Amazing teacher, and is actually concerned about every single student's performance outside of class. Constantly engages with students through email and has original assignments like his "Art" project. Love the bare feet stick combo too! Wizard physicist.
Very fair prof; he tells you explicitly what will and won't be tested. He cares about students' success and is available after almost every class if you have any questions.
He's a good guy and cares about his students. His exams are hard. The course says that physics is not a prerequisite; it 100% is. This is a rigorous course with lots of theory. If you relied on math to do physics, be prepared to struggle to understand his lectures. Overcomplicates calculations. You can do well in class, but you have to lock in.
His lectures can honestly get pretty confusing and hard to focus on but his lecture notes are amazing for studying. While he doesn't offer practice questions/homework his assignments and tutorials are great for that. High school physics isn't a requirement for most programs that take this intro class, but I think it's impossible without grade 11.
This professor made physics 10x harder. He only focuses on the theory part of physics and explains it in the most confusing way possible. His testing did not make sense with the lecture and there is so much material that does not connect together.
Very funny prof and lectures are very enjoyable, but getting a high grade takes a LOT of work. 70% is easy to get from knowing how to do all problem types and basic knowledge, but the last 30% is based on niche physics topics from his lecture NOTES that aren't covered in lecture deeply. Annotate lecture notes to get that 4.0 (600 pages total)
