Hes very helpful, talks very fast, so pay attention. Watchout though, he gives extra credit but you have to ask him for it. Go to all labs, and his exams are hard, but he has review sessions usually the wednesday before class. GO to them!!!!
He's very clear both in lectures and labs. He's an overall good teacher, but not a cakewalk. His reviews are very broad while his tests are very narrow so to do well in exams, study each chapter thoroughly. Also uses more than multiple-choice, be careful.
He's a nice guy but his tests are way to hard. His tests consists of fill in the blank, m/c, and 3 essays! Its impossible to make a solid "A" on the tests. Im good at Bio and i made a "c" in his class. if you want a challenge take him.
Mr. Barnby maintains a positive and helpful attitude. This course covers alot of material and is difficult for some students. Mr. Barnby speaks very fast so pay close attention and ask questions!
getting a good grade on the exam takes LOTS of studying! so study everything!! he is really cool but a little reserved if you talk to him one on one.
Mr. Barnby is a excellent teacher -- knowledgeable and responsible. If you want to learn, taking his class benefits your whole life.Of cause his class is not easy to pass unless you work very hard. His lab is very clear and interesting.
He sets up his class so even if you aren't the best at Science, you can still pass. Tip: do ALL CD's, show up to every lab, and do the trip report. (All are somewhat easy)If you do that you can still get a good grade even if you don't do well on the tests
Dr.Barnby is a great teacher. The class is 4 units so it is hard. He makes it as simple as possible. You have to spend around 8 hrs studying for the test. He is good and will help. 50 extra credit points are also available. I got a A.
Excellent teacher with great and fun personality. I've learned sooo much from him,but I had to study a LOT and was well worth it!I just loved have him as my teacher and what a great learning experience!
Dr. Barnby is an excellent teacher. The subject is fascinating and he knows alot. He expects students to do the work and show for class. he has no time for slackers. He will help you if you do your part as well.
i dont like slide shows :(
Great teacher, hard course. I got an A, but be prepared to work for it. He is very helpful and fair. He is also a really interesting and intelligent guy.
WELL JUST LIKE EVERYONE SAYS HE WILL WORK YOU SO HARD THAT YOULL WISH YOU DIDNT SIGN UP FOR HIS CLASS. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS HE SPEAK WAY TOO FAST AND HE PROBLY TEACH TOO LONG THAT IT DOESNT INTEREST HIM NO MORE OR HE THINKS THAT EVERYONE IS A GENIUS AND EXPECT WAY TOO MUCH FROM. BY THE WAY I GOT A B
talks way to fast. but he knows his stuff. always willing tohelp if you ask. he himself is a real cool guy. keeps the class laughing.
Dr. Barnby had more than enough energy and intelligence to keep our large class interested.Be prepared to put in a lot of study time... but don't be fooled by his constant bragging as to the hardness of this class, if you just stick it out there's tons of extra credit at the end. I got an A.
hes very nice and full of energy, dont take the class if you hate Biology cause it is friging hard. I have a C+ right now, but he is fair and more than generous when it comes to grades.
This man is FIRST RATE. He knows and likes his material and is excellent with his delivery of a very difficult subject. Like a lot of people, I am having difficulty in this class, but he does let us earn extra credits. Dr. Barnby is an EXCELLENT instructor; Ohlone should hang on to this one.
Very good teacher. Interesting, makes you work hard, but you will learn alot. Do not take anyone else but him for the LAB part of the class though, he gives answers that you will find helpful.
Dr. Barnby is cool and really knows his stuff. However, this class is really hard. Expect to get a lot of assignments and CD labs. If you really want to succeed if your majoring in Science... you will learn a lot from him... But pepare for a lot of hardwork and difficult exams!
Dr. B is cool. He is a good teacher but tests are hard because IT IS BIOLOGY!! If people think Barnby is hard wait till you guys take Dr.Baxter. I heard Baxster is worse for Bio 101A. But it is easy to get a A/B/C in class if you do ALL Hw, labs and Extra credit. Work Hard in any class you have to!!
Dr. Barnby is a cool teacher.. But he is really really hard.. I would think twice on taking this class first... Take him only as a last resort!!! Because this class is really hard!!! So be prepared for tons of CD labs and really hard exams!!! Goodluck if you do!!!
Very hard teacher.think twice.his tests are krazy hard.50% of his class failed last semester. very boring aswell. talks way too fast
He talks way to fast, even the lady there to type what he was saying for the deaf students couldn't keep up.
Are you kidding?... What extra credit?... He doesn't even give out any extra credit... And if he does, he probably just give it to the students who are really doing good... I mean.. He should have more compassion to those who are actually failing the class.... THINK Twice if you are gonna take HIM..
Great teacher, he loves teaching and loves the subject, very enthusiastic. Keeps the class interested. Did all the extra credit and passed the class with 103% because he grades on a curve. It is very possible to pass this class with an A.
Good Teacher... Knows his stuff and very smart... Helpful at times.. But he talks way to fast during the lectures... and His CD Labs are so impossible to finished... But nevermind that... The EXAMS includes about 9 to 10 chapters all together... VERY DIFFICULT!!!
He knows his information and hes really nice and funny. His tests are ridiculously hard though and cover a lot of material. But if u do all the labs and CD's u can prolly pass!
professor barnby really knows his stuff. he does talk fast, but i just tape recorded his lectures and did fine.
Never had him as my lab instructor...so cant help much there. But in lecture, he is very organized. He can throw you off or you could lose him based on certain concepts you dont understand. But if youre able to keep up with him, he knows what he's talking about. Tests arent easy, but its not difficult either. If you do JUST enough, you can pass...
He is the most excellent professor I've ever had in Ohlone. Very difficult class. he loves teaching and never get boring in his class 'cause he keeps u busy. If u are biology major-take his class. There are extra credit if u ask him to give u extra report work such as collecting spicemen of plant, or he sometime gives u in lab if over of all grades
Don't take him. His lectures are all over the place. He is disorganized and doesn't help you know what to prepare for on the tests. He covers so much stuff for each test it is impossible to know everything.
Easygoing guy, willing to help students out. Sense of humor is sophomoric but some people seem to love that. (not I) Tests have relevant study guides, not too difficult. If you want a basic understanding of bio without getting very deep, take him.
he's a great teacher and his lectures r never boring. his tests r hard and i failed the first 2 but in the end i got a B which couldve only happened if i did well on the last test and final. the labs are interesting and he'll help u if u ask. many people say that his class is hard but im glad i took it. in general he's a nice prof n 1 u can talk 2.
He is a very knowledgeable professor, but he doesn't break material down enough for some students to understand. His lectures are all over the place and if you miss a minute you will be confused as to what he is talking about. His tests are difficult (and they make up 55% of your overall grade) so the test scores pretty much dictate your success
The worse of the two BIO-130 profs offered (Watanabe being the other.) His lectures seem like you're learning a lot, but when the test comes around you'll be lucky to recognize half of it. He tests you on inconsequential details, and his lecture tangents are neither useful nor entertaining. His attitude is that of hostility to students. Watch out.
To add to the rater before me; Barnby knows the stuff inside out. Like the person b4 me said, his exams are frekkin hard, he makes it harder than its supposed to be. You come in on exam day all confident after studying super hard, only to find out that you got 2 letter grades lower than you expected. Register with caution, you must consider chabot.
Good use of humor, interesting lectures; but you'll have to bust your ass for this class.
this should be a review for students who took bio in high school. barnby is funny and keeps things fairly interesting. he talks fast though and about half of the class was gone after the last "drop with W" day! just study the lecture notes for exams. you should be fine. i didn't rely too much on the book; it just complicated things.
He is hard. Test were also hard. You must take his class ans really focus primarily on it. I dropped it and took a better teacher: Ms. Drakiewicz.
He is a hard teacher, I will never take this class with him ever again. I tried so hard and go nowhere. If you can take it with someone else.
Absolutely horrible teacher. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER. He is hard. Test were ridiculous. Studied a lot for the tests but once you see them there is no point to your studying.
He is a funny and nice guy. Bad teacher though. His class is on a very high level for a basic biology class. He grades hard and his tests are even harder. None of the material on the tests were apart of his notes and lectures. I attended class every meeting asked questions but unfortunately got nowhere in the class so I dropped it.
Barnby is an extremely extremely hard teacher. Barnby really knows his biology and he expects his students to know just as much. Meaning, his test and grading is DIFFICULT! Although he does give you handouts and lectures, NONE OF THOSE were on his test! You kind of have to teach yourself and hope you pass his class with a C
Don't take this class. Plain and simple.
ONE COOL AND FUNNY TEACHER... YES HE'S HARD BUT IT'S ONLY FOR THOSE THAT WELLING TO TAKE THE TIME OUT AND GATHER THE INFO THAT HE GIVES YOU!!! THIS IS REAL IMPORTANT DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN'T KEEP UP!!!
Barnby is kool.. but he's the hardest teacher i have ever had in my life, his tests are really hard and even if u study very well u still won't be able 2 get an A in his class ... I end up dropping it.
He's a really funny guy and his lectures are interesting. He IS hard but you have to put the time and effort into the class. If you ask he can be VERY helpful. People who end up failing are the ones who don't show up for lecture. "Put in the minimum effort and you'll pass." He says that at least twice so PAY ATTENTION!
If u want to be treated like a college student, take this class. He's so funny - u will not fall asleep. The class is tough, but u will learn alot.
hes really hard, u have to put a lot of time out of class just to pass with a c-. he's one of the hardest teacher i ever took. his exams are really hard too, he talks really fast. i dont recommend at alll to take un less ur willing to put all ur effort in this class. some times he makes really offending jokes
worst biology teacher at ohlone dont ever take him unless u like pain
Dr.Barnby is pretty cool. He talks fast, but I think that's because he has alot of stuff to cover in a short amount of time, and it also keeps us from falling asleep. He's totally approachable, funny as hell, and a professional in labs. I admit, he's hard - but if you're majoring in any science or medical degree, you'll benefit from this class.
Very chanllenging teacher, so Darwin's theory of evolutiion applies if you take this class (only the strong survive). His tests covalently bond to his lecture notes. If you don't stimulate your neurons to the point of action potential or if you have 47 chromosones in the nucleus of ur blood cells - you will not pass this class.
He makes smart people look stupid. yea he is funny but he is helllllaaa hard, he made me feel stupid in his classs. i dont recomend him at allllll , there are other proffesors at ohlone he is the worst teacher out of all the science/bio teachers there. ur gonna have to put all ur effort in this class or else u wont pass
If you show up, take notes, and study for about 3 to 4 hours for the week prior to the test you get an A. He isn't easy but, if you put in work you learn a lot. So I guess if you're not intellectually curious and just want to float through life don't take this class if you want to learn then make sure you're in there.
DO NOT take his class! Taking his class would only mean FAILURE. A majority of his students drop out of his class before the semester ends, he even said that himself. The average grade people got on his tests were usually D's. Take his class if you dare...
He knows his stuff and is very enthusiastic. His classes are well organized, his explanations are crystal clear and he has a sense of humor. His exams are hard, though. He expects too much of his students.
it was hard, but i really liked prof barnby! i thought he was very funny!
I thought Barnby was an overall really good teacher. He's funny and keeps class interesting. His labs are easy and he'll usually give you the answers and walk you through everything. But his tests are VERY HARD. If you study a ton and go to every lecture, you should be fine.
I had to work hard to do well. Even today, I still remember asking him what will be on the test. His reply was, "Everything!" I was like "Damn it!? that did not help at all. Sure enough, I made sure I read the book, attended lectures, and understood everything in the outline. I didn't get my butt kicked in the finals, and I'm proud of it :)
Dr. Barnby is a really nice guy. He has very fast paced interesting lectures. It is important to pay attention and take good notes. As long as you study and pay attention you can get a good grade. I really enjoyed my time with Dr. B!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. HE IS EXTREMELY HARD. HE TRIES TO BE FUNNY, HIS JOKES ARE SOMEWHAT DISRESPECTFUL. HE REALLY TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE, BUT HE DOESN'T ENCOURAGE. CALLS HIS STUDENTS STUPID AND CONSTANTLY REMINDS THEM THAT MOST WILL NOT PASS AND WILL NOT DO GOOD ON ANY ASSIGNMENTS HE ASSIGNS. VERY POOR ETHICS FOR SOMEONE WHO SHOULD BE AN EDUCATOR.
Excellent instructor! Do the homework, show up to all labs and study for the lab quizzes well. If you ace the lab you will get at least a B in class. He's very helpful and makes the topic interesting. Lecture attendance highly recommened since he often hints at test questions. Best Bio teacher I've ever had.
He was a typical college professor. Just make sure you study chapters weekly. Course goes kinda fast. His tests usually consist of nine chapters and has 3 tests and a final. Also weekly lab tests. I would take him again. Really nice guy.
This teacher is great! He is very intelligent teach you everything he can in the short time he has to teach the subject. I recomed you attend alternate lecture discussion class you will benefit greatly. This is where you can ask what you did not get in class.
Lectures are just an hour, but it goes by super fast, so you need to pay attention. He's funny and makes jokes here and there. He emails you his lectures prior to class, so you have them with you and to study. Labs are easy and can be fun. Only thing is that it's all up to you to study. You really need to study through out the semester, don't cram!
SUCH A GOOD TEACHER. funny, really knows what hes talking about. a nice guy. no complaints whatsoever, i would love to take him again.
Although he is a hard teacher and a fast speaker, Mr. Barnby is really nice. Tests and quizzes are fair. He gives students all the lecture outlines, and they are helpful. I encourage students to take him for biology 130. Also, READ THE BOOK! AND THE FIGURES! IT IS HELPFUL!!!! :)
Before taking Biology, I was a psych major and was so scared to take Bio because in high school I received a D. However, I studied my fool head off and ended up with an A in Bio 130. I was totally shocked! But I did work hard. Anyways long story short...he gives his class a UC college atmosphere. BE DEDICATED! You will learn ALOT.
I freakin love barnby!!!! im in his bio 130 this semester and this class is great the info is a little boring but the teacher explains everything really good so you understand plus hes always making funny jokes. if you show up to all the lectures you will get a good grade plus he emails you lecture outlines that are better than the notes themself
Easy class, just be ready to work hard, be dedicated to learn and study the concept. Got a B with out trying, I could?ve done better but I was happy with the result. Professor Barnby is a great teacher, very helpful.
This class was definitely not as easy as I thought it would be. But an A is definitely possible if you study for the weekly quizzes and attend lectures. He sometimes gives away a few questions on the test in lectures.TAKE THE OPTIONAL FINAL no matter what grade you have. It will be your highest score! But he's a great teacher and really funny too
i attended all the classes up until the midterm, then i completely stopped attending lecture and only showed up for the lab/tests. Tests are pretty hard, but do well on the weekly quizzes and it gives you a greater chance of passing the class. Got an A for the course even though i didn't show up the last half of the semester.
Definitely read the textbook and review your notes as well as the notes that he emails you. Review the quizzes for the exams. The tests are okay, but he usually has extra credit (except for the final). Definitely take the optional final. It's super EASY and will definitely help you out a lot. Still have to study, but an A is not hard.
He goes extremely fast. He's nice, but make sure you study and ask questions. Quizzes and exams are difficult.
Prof. Barnby is a GREAT teacher. he emails the lecture notes prior to lecture, and his overall lecture class is very informative. i do suggest reading the book and fully understanding all material because he goes thru ALOT of material in a single semester. biology is a complex subject, so if you want to pass YOU have to put in the work, period..
Professors Barnby's class is pretty hard for an intro to biology class. Many students in the class score very low on exams and end up dropping the class. You have to put a lot of time into studying to pass his exams with a C. He keeps his class interesting with his crazy humor.
excellent teacher. very clear and organized. read the study guides and notes you will be fine. Got an A.
this class is hard, but it's definitely possibly to pass! he's a great teacher, & he sends you amazing notes for every chapter! as long as you go to every lecture, and take a look at the notes, you'll be fine! STUDY! And I promise you, you'll pass with a B if you just put even a LITTLE effort in his class!
All you need to do to receive an A in this class is study and READ! Fair and easy class. Great professor.
As long as you show up to lecture and lab everyday, you WILL pass!
Great professor. He was clear and very helpful. He let you retake your worst test for a better grade too.
Dr. Barnby is a clear and organized lecturer. His labs are well run & are pertinent to lecture. He is passionate about his subject and updates his lectures every semester with articles from scientific journals. One complaint - he isn't as responsive to emails as he should be. No study guides for his test or alternate final exams are offered no.
Great Professor with a passion for the subject he teaches. He always goes out of his way to improve the course. He does a great job of staying current in the research field and introducing new discoveries to the class. Very dedicated to the courses he teaches and to his students. He is very fair when it comes to test/quizzes.
i wish he taught Biology 103 and 106. he really made me appreciate biology.
He is a great professor ! To do great on the exam and quizzes (which are online) you should attend class. If you put in the time and effort to study your notes, you will get an A ! I also didn't really use my book in this class
He is extremely hyper and bounces around alot during lecture. He can be extremely helpful but sometimes unorganized.
Just checked my grade and got A in the class. There are 3 exams total, online quizzes and labs. I got D on my first test but still got A in the class. He's fairly easy and great hyper teacher. His armpit gets sweaty easily... But he's a great funny professor!
He really wants everyone to succeed and works hard to not move on until he's answered everyone's questions. It's a lot of material to cover but he's really clear. I highly recommend him.
He is very helpfull and really wants everyone to succeed and works hard to get good grade until he's loved to answered everyone's questions if u ask him any question he will tell u unit u get it . It's a lot of material to cover but he's really clear. I highly recommend him.he is funny professor u will enjoy his class love to attend his class
Dr.Barnby is a great biology instructor. Grades fairly, but also demands alot from students. Be prepared to read everything.there are 3 test, and 11 online test, and weekly lab. We had Ms.jensen as our lab instructor and she is also an amazing teacher.
Be prepared to study! He doesn't take attendance for lectures but they are super important to attend. His lectures also have a tendency to put people to sleep. But overall, Barnby isn't bad.
He's an awesome professor. His lectures move really fast but he gets your really prepared for Anatomy & Physio. His lectures are clear and organized... He's super helpful in labs... Makes sure you understand it before you leave.
An awesome professor. He's very organized, clear, and will answer any question asked. He's kind of fast paced, but go to lecture, pay attention, take good notes, read the chapters as supplements and just do the labs and quizzes. You're guaranteed a good grade if you put effort into his class - he doesn't make it hard, you just have to do the work.
Professor Barnby was fantastic. He is very helpful. He's passionate about Bio, and I wish he'd teach microbiology or any other bio class! His exams covered a lot of material but were multiple choice. He writes his notes on the board and doesn't have useless powerpoints! He actually explains it clearly!
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO PASS!!!
Mr. Barnby makes funny, ridiculous jokes about random things in class. He is very knowledgeable and very smart. He will always help you if ask for it. I have to be honest: he's the most intelligent professor I've ever had. He knows 150% what he's talking about. Take him if you want but I'm warning you.... the exams are difficult!!! So study hard!!
Exams are out of the book. make sure you go to all lectures, take good notes, do all homeworks and attend all laba and you will pass.
Dr Barnby is so nice and very funny. tests are ok not to hard not to easy if you do all your work its very easy to get an A in the course. Dont miss any lab days how ever if you go to every single one of his lectures you will pass...
Prof. Barnby is awesome the only way you can fail this class is if you dont show up for the labs and do all your homework. He only give out 2 test which are the midterm and final exam. class was a breeze he is a funny down to earth professor. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
This teacher might will say, "half of you will fail this class". BUT! that is only if you didn't study and pay attention to lab and lectures. I highly recommended you to pay attention, take all the notes when teacher writes on the board and study all the time! it will be worth it in the end!
This teacher might will say, "half of you will fail this class". So, take this class seriously! Go to lab and lecture all the time!
NOT an easy, breezy class, but VERY much an educational, well-built, and structured course. Professor Barnby is a cup of knowledge, and makes his lectures really entertaining, clear, and interesting. Not for slackers, but definitely for students that are interested in the topic and doing a good job. Labs are also super fun!
Easy professor, passionate about what he teaches, the tests are easy as long as you keep up with the class. He's very helpful as long as you go ask him questions, he won't just baby you. I would definitely take another one of his classes. You'd have to actually physically try to fail to actually fail his classes. He explains everything 100 times.
As long as you go to all the labs and do the online homework (which is where the book comes into play), you'll pass the class. Attending lecture isn't mandatory, but it's extremely helpful unless you already have a really strong foundation in bio.
He is a character, really funny and has a different sense of humor. Only issue is during his long lectures, he talks way too fast. He has chicken scratch too so its difficult to understand his hand writing. But he seems to get his point across and shows helpful videos of dna. The online hw is killer and not attending labs can hurt your grade.
Professor Barnby is a pretty good teacher but he's midterm and final are really hard. Some of the stuff on there he had never gone over in class. It is possible to still pass even if doing bad on the tests. Just make sure to go go to lab and do all of the homework!
LOVED his class. He talks super quick, he's like mighty mouse but he's very interesting and funny. Easy to ask questions to and very helpful in lab. MUST attend lab, he doesn't take told for lectures but you need to go or get a friends notes because his exams are straight out of lecture. Gives Extra Credit questions on exams.I got 111% on the final
First of all BIO 130 is really hard. I struggled so much that I dropped it before. But I re took this class with Mr. Barnby and it was still difficult but much more clear. Barnby is a great, hilarious professor. He really wants you to understand the material. Highly recommend him for bio 130 because it really is a hard class.
You can't skate through this course! Only 2 exams +lab notebook made up our class grade. First test is challenging and you really need a detailed lab notebook results or you'll get points taken off for the smallest stuff. Biggest peeve is that he talks fast during lectures. He's hilarious though, and the final was very fair. Memorable class!
Professor Barnby is Amazing, from day 1 I recommend that you record every single lecture and listen to them. He helped me so much, during the lecture I asked many questions and he would answer them all respectively , he was super helpful .Make sure you work hard, I studied almost everyday and ended up with an A by just listening to recordings.
Professor Barnby is an awesome professor. I recommend read the book before and after lecture. Make sure to record his lectures and take detailed lecture notes because his tests are straight out of his lectures. He doesn't hesitate to answer any questions (no matter how dumb they are) and he really loves what he does.
This class is pretty easy, as long as you show up and take lecture notes you will definitely pass. Lab and Homework are a combined 50% of your grade, you could potentially fail every test and still end up with a C. Tests are taken straight from the lecture notes, and always include about 10- 20 extra credit questions at the end.
Barnby's super nice. Will answer all questions respectfully and thoroughly, doesn't get angry or annoyed. Wants you to succeed, and thoroughly coversrepeats material that'll be on the tests.
One of the best profs! He really does care about his students and wants everyone to pass. Make sure you take really good thorough notes, because he only asks what he lectures you on in class. Also, he gives large amounts of extra credit at the end of his tests, especially in the "final"! During labs, he is ALWAYS there to help. Also, very funny!
Great class! Expect to do some hw outside of class and DONT even think about skipping lecture or labs. Very important to keep in mind he does display some power point material but most of his lecture is dictation and bullet points on the white board! I take great notes so I did very well in the class... so my advice take great notes and dont skip!
Barnby is the best lecturer I have seen. He is straight to the point, fast(which many see as a con), and answers questions thoroughly. If you pay attention in lecture and participate, you should manage to get at least a B on the tests (these aren't too hard in my opinion and have built in extra credit). The only thing the text is good for is hw.
Dr Barnby is very quick paced, and he can cover a lot of material during a lecture. However he will go off on a tangent a lot of the time to try and relate the material and make it more interesting. He definitely inspired the whole class, and had a lot of interesting side notes that really sparked curiosity about genetics. Very funny!
Professor Barnby is a great lecturer and he keeps biology very entertaining. Go to every lecture to fully understand the class. The tests are difficult but if you study the practice tests religiously and have lecture notes you will be in the B range. Online homework is easy and you can get points in the lab as long as you pay attention to detail.
His lectures are helpful and he keeps it interesting, but there's something about the lecture hall that's so sleep-inducing. The 3 tests aren't too bad, multiple choice and really similar to his study exams. Homework is time consuming, but can be helpful in studying. I really enjoyed his class and learned a lot from him. Just be prepared to study!
Barnby was one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is hilarious and he does his best to make his lectures interesting. He only takes roll in the labs BUT it is highly recommended to still attend the lectures due to the fact that the three tests we take are all on the lectures. Expect weekly online homework that takes about 1-1.5 hours.
As a non science related major, I thought this wouldn't be too bad. I was wrong. The lectures are so long and filled with info. I STRESS THIS: get a lab with Barnby, it's soo much easier than doing a lab with another prof. The exams are not easy to get an A (or B) on, you have to work for it. Plus, you won't know your grade until the end.
Ever heard of ppl who tune out to high frequency speech? I tune out when ppl talk TOO FAST. Wish he'd take a breath now & then so I can write things down :( It's hard to relate to a lecture when I come home with no handwritten notes. Also there's no way to print his "cheater notes" embedded in the PPT, & he jumps ahead too much, not easy to follow.
Don't miss lectures and do the online assignments and you'll do fine. Practice tests he provides are key in getting an A
If you wanna get a good grade, skipping classes is fine, but you really need to work hard and read all the texts in the book. He teaches many stuff in every lectures in order to keep up with the syllabus. The online assignment is easy and the exams (All MC) are tough. The good thing is the lab is easy and he will drop one lowest exam.
Super cool professor who uses real life examples to help you understand the material. Drops lowest exam. You can easily pass by doing the homework, going to lab, and getting at least a C on the exams. He was probably one of the funniest Bio professors I have had.
This semester the tables have turned, make sure you do not get him. He has changed all of his tests making it super hard, You can't follow his lectures to begin with. His tests are advanced level questions that no Ohlone student should ever see. Pretty much the whole class got a D-C.
Dr. Barnby is a cool and funny professor, but most of the time even the gifted students barely manage. You'll find that hard work does NOT pay off in this class and expect half right on exams that you spend at least 20-30 hours studying for. You can still fail even if you thoroughly read the textbook. He's experienced, but its not worth the effort.
He totally changed his style for this semester. no homework and study for the exam. This year exams were three times harder than last year. His lecture just like storytelling, most of his slides are pics, but he is hilarious. He never replied any emails, phone number on the syllabus is fake. Miscalculating grades, and forgetting things and lazy.
Due to Dr. Baxter's students complaining about Dr. Barnby's class being too "easy" and clear, he really upped his game this semester or even the last semester actually. Everything is super difficult. You really have to read the textbook to understand and practice since no homework is given. Now with bio-101A and B there is no good prof at Ohlone :(
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. I study for 20-40 hours and barley manage a B. His tests are borderline unfair dont take this clas
Hard class but not impossible to do good in. As long as you pay attention to what he emphasizes in his lectures and participate in the labs, a good grade is almost guaranteed. Does not respond to emails/messages but will answer any question asked during class or lab. Provides practice exams that are super useful.
He is that type of professor you will always remember: hilarious and smart, but still humble. He always remark that once he was an student & young. I learnt a lot with him and everything is mostly practical. Study from a book he can recommend you guiding you with the slides, but most importantly, study from your lab notebook!
I've had Dr. Barnby for 2 semesters of Biology, and I can recommend him. His lectures are detailed and also inform the student on current information on various topics, the drawback being that integral information can be just glanced over. Quizzes are twice a week and the exams can be exhaustive to prepare for. Daily studying is key and required.
Dr. Barnby is one of the best professor's you can get for a Biology class. Although I do agree like the many others that Biology on itself is a hard course, professor Barnby makes you work for your grade fairly. Attending lectures isn't enough, but understanding what is being taught is the best advice I can give. Would take his class again for fun!
Professor Barnby is the best choice for BIO101A. His lectures are clear and he'll explain it until everybody understands it. The exams aren't difficult if you study well and consistently. Last minute studying will not help you pass this class. There are lecture and lab exams. Take Barnby, you won't regret it if you're a good student.
Dr. Barnby's class definitely wasn't easy, but it was a lot of fun. His exams are pretty difficult, so be sure to study daily and take good notes in lecture. He gives very clear instructions on what he expects in labs. He provides practice exams for his lecture exams which are very useful.
Bio 101 AB are classes that you really have to work to get a grade. The materials themselves are abundant, so dont expect those classes will be easy. Dr. Barnby is knowledgeable and supper accommodated. Doing well is possible if you know how to manage all the information. Lecture is your best friend when it comes to exams
Y'all catch this man dropping a rap album. He talks so fast Eminem could NEVER. Since his tests were online this semester they were extra hard, few questions, and not a good evaluation of our knowledge. I hope no one ever has to take his class ONLINE. He was a lot better when remote instruction wasn't in yet.
I was looking forward to Professor Barnby's class and it went steady- study and pay attention and you'll do well. But when our classes went online, it felt like he switched and wanted us to fail. His tests got 5x harder and they were near impossible to study for, our mean went down per test. I wish the class stayed in person because it was brutal.
Biology is really difficult, so you need to stay on top of it by reading ahead and asking questions. He is a great lecturer, but the transition to remote instruction was very rough. The online exams became significantly harder than the ones taken in person. Great professor, but I'd suggest taking biology when classes return to campus.
I don't know what my grade is, but after his first class I found him scary. He lets us use the book, but not everything that he teaches is from the book. He said that if he thought anyone was cheating that he'll chase that person and make sure that that shows on your criminal record. He adds chemistry onto the biology course & makes the test hard.
BIO-101A is a really hard class, but Dr Barnby is an excellent teacher! He is very entertaining and makes class fun. Not the best at responding to emails though. I had to work VERY hard to get an A, but if you put in effort you can definitely pass :) He curved one test and offered a couple points extra credit but not much. TAKE NOTES in lecture!!
His online class is terrible. He speaks way too fast and doesn't explain concepts clearly. Since he lives in the mountains, his wifi is always cutting out and his live Zoom lectures are always freezing. He made the tests to be in person despite the lecture being online which is unfair. His tests are the most difficult things I've done. dont take!!!
There's no homework in his classes and he was willing to host extra office hours the day before Lecture Exams to clear up any questions. Read over the textbook BEFORE lecture, take notes during, and revise them after class. It's clear he wants his students to pass, but he will also make you work for it. Bio is hard and expect this class to be.
This class is on the harder side, but I loved it regardless. Dr. Barnby lectures really fast, but you get used to it after a while. He also weaves in jokes and keeps the lectures interesting. The exams are tricky but I was able to do pretty well by thoroughly reading the textbook and my notes a few days prior. Not an easy A, but I learned so much!
Biology is a hard class, and Dr. Barnby does try to help you succeed. A lot of people whom I knew struggled did not come to his lectures, missing out on what he writes on the board, etc. Make sure to pay attention, he outright says if he will put a topic on the test, and tests directly from his lectures! Read the textbook before lectures too!
Hardest class I've ever taken. Lectures were kinda useless unless he was teaching us how to do practice problems for exams. Otherwise, he's hilarious and explains topics really well. The textbook is mandatory as he pulls all the information from there for the exams. Exams were 10/10 on difficulty and labs were easy points.
This is a hard class and you have to read the textbook to do well on the tests. You cannot procrastinate on studying for tests because there is a lot of material in each test. He's sometimes hard to contact and returns tests pretty late, but he is a funny dude and some of the labs are really cool.
no homework, quizzes every week, fun labs, and hard exams. for this class you HAVE to pay attention to his lectures. he'll write things on the board but its not everything you need to know. also another good thing is that he does record lectures for you to go back and watch to study for exam. but i want to emphasize paying attention!!
Dr. Barnby's classes are tough, but engaging if you put in the work. Lecture attendance and textbook reading are crucial. unstuckstudy was super helpful for prep - don't skip it!
Prof. Barnby is amazing! You'll probably pass as long as you pay attention and actively participate (attending most lectures/labs)! The tests are very content-heavy and will make up most of your grade. The only other opportunity to raise your grade will be through quizzes and labs. Always look at the canvas and use all the materials available!
Lectures contain a lot of information that is crucial for exams, so highly recommend paying attention and reviewing. No homework, and he gives quizzes that are completely open notes. The labs are fun and not difficult at all. Exams make up a large majority of your grade, but the labs and quizzes are a huge help in keeping your grade up!
Lectures contain a lot of content, so be prepared to take a lot of notes. There will be one open note quiz at the end of every lecture. Expect about 1 quiz a week, rarely 2. There are 3 midterms and 1 final. Tests will have 50 questions, all multiple choice. Tests are based on lectures and QUESTIONS ASKED ON QUIZZES. Take a lot of notes and study!!
Prof Barney is amazing. I don't know why he gets low ratings. If you pay attention to what he lectures, guarantee that you will get an “A”. Plus he even gave us revisions/ study guides before the exam! It's rarely hard to get below a “B” grade. He won't give mercy for extra credit though. There is quiz after every lecture but it's open book.
Unironically the best class I have taken in my life. Biology is hard and Dr. Barnby's exams typically averaged in the 50s-70s. However, Dr. Barnby excels in creating engaging and entertaining lectures, often elaborating on complex topics during office hours.
Dr. Barnby is a great professor who truly knows and loves what he teaches. Truly cares about his students' success and listens to feedback on tests. Tests are fairly hard though with an average of 60-75 across the majority of them. TAKE NOT OF QUIZ QUESTIONS as that is what makes up a good chunk of the tests.
