The first teacher I took at OC, and my first math teacher ever - I never thought math could be fun, but that's how he made it seem. Doesn't bury you in homework, and is easy to get along with.

This prof is the BEST EVER!! He is really funny and you will definitely enjoy his lectures. He makes every problem so easy to understand, he'll do anything to make you understand- draw or act - anything. His tests are good if you study and he does assign hw almost everyday, but u'll never know when he'll collect them or not. His Great

I loved this professor when I went to Oxnard. he is very energetic when he teaches and breaks things down so even a monkey can do them. I highly recommend this professor and would gladly take him again any day.

Had a great experience in his class. He seems very fair when it comes to grading. You do have to attend class or else you might be lost. VERY helpful. pay no attention to the negative comment below. i withdrew from a previous STATS class because the teacher was terrible. Bates makes STATS easy to understand. Is available for tutoring in OC library. Class is enjoyable. Quizzes expected after each lesson. dont worry- just review the notes you take in class. Grading is reasonable.

If you've been afraid of math previously, Mr. Bates will help you view math in a positive perspective. He loves statistics and his job. He makes every attempt to help his students learn statistics, if you show up for class.

Mr. Bates teaches in a way that sparks your interest in the math! His lectures explain the problems very clear. I surely thought I would struggle in his statistics class but actually found it to be my favorite one! I highly recommend him.

Majority of reviews on Mr. Bates says it all. Definitely knows his material & makes it really easy for you to understand. Very passionate about statistics, & it shows in his teaching style. Always had a story that related very well to the topic & made it understandable. Extremely hilarious; there was not a day where you didn't laugh at least once.

Took Bates for Math 9 (Basic Math). My first math class ever at OC. Very help & very clear. I was afraid this class would be challenging but he gives great examples of the problems and is willing to answer questions and make sure that everyone understands. Definitely helped prepare me for Math 10 & Math 11 :) Very funny guy. Would highly recommend.

I absolutely love him! I wish he taught all my classes. He'll help you 100% until you understand the material. You hardly have to look at your book for more information because he teaches you everything you need to learn for his midterms. He quizzes every other day. Deffinitely take Bates for math 105 his class is beyond easy in reguards to the fact that he quizzes often which helps A LOT with the class. his math 115 class is a little more challenging and he does not seem more helpful in this class. Show up and review and DO ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS mandatory in both classes. Best teacher for math105.

Great teacher. Keeps the class awake. Homework is not collected, but if you want to pass, DO IT. Highly recommend seeing him during office hours if you're unsure about any of the work. He'll help you out a lot.

I took Statistics durig the Summer Semester...although thre is a lot of work involved, he made the class enjoyale and understandable...had I taken it during a regular semester, I robably would have scored an "A" in the class....there is a lot of work, but his stories/analagies made the class fun & educational...but even moreso, he cares if you try.

Best Stats teacher ever! You won't get bored in his class since he always jokes around. His grading system is different from the other teachers but he has good reasons for it. He wants every student to learn and understand his subject so he explains everything very well. The best part is he allows students to use notes on his tests. Take him! :)

Mr. Bates is such a funny dude! He was vey organized, but almost always a little late to class. Very helpful, really encourages questions. He wants to make sure you understand EVERYTHING. Didn't need the book. DO THE HOMEWORK. The only thing that almost hurt my grade was my QUIZ SCORES! YOU REALLY NEED TO STUDY AND SHOW UP TO CLASS FOR QUIZZES

Very helpful teacher, will always respond to you in a clear and professional way. He can also be a joker just to keep the class alive because some of us are brain dead by the time class starts. Rarely used the book, lots of HW online: DO THEM. Lots of quizzes too. Presentations are not too difficult.

Took him for stats 2 years ago but had to take two other stats classes when I transferred to the university. Best teacher I've had not only for stats or math, but overall in my entire college experience! Takes time to explain until everyone understands, is always available, and genuinely cares for your success in both, the classroom and in life.

Mr. Bates I think is one of the better math teachers here at Oxnard College. He enjoys teaching so you can enjoy the class with him. The way he grades the class is pretty out there, but at the same time if you pay attention in his class and do the homework then getting an A won't be as hard as you think.

Bates is an awsome professor. I was scared to take this class over the short period of 4 weeks but it was one of the best things I've ever done. Professor Bates was hands down the best math teacher I've had. He's funny, organized, and his lectures are on point. If you can take him then don't even think twice about it. Be aware he does quiz a lot, but don't get discouraged if you bomb more than a few. You'll have plenty of opportunities to make it up as the class progresses.

I took Stats in the summer during the four week course at Oxnard College. Math is something I didn't comprehend up until my college years. Professor Bates helps you clearly understand the material, gives extra credit, and has you do 3 projects in groups. He's funny and outgoing! I would highly recommend to take him for stats! #stud

Took this class during summer(SUMM 2017) for a four week course. Wasn't as hard as I expected because Bates will slow down until all students understand the lecture. But it was not easy either have to show up to class to earn a passing grade. DO NOT SLACK OFF you will regret it. He Does offer Extra Credit but do not relay on it.#OxnardCollegeStats

Only teacher you should be taking stats with @oc. He made stats so easy and trust me, im the worst at math. Quizzes every day and midterms, but he gives you study guides so you know what youre going into. He does make you work for an A though because you have to get an A in everything to get an A in the class (& also Bs, Cs, etc).

I'm taking his statistics class this spring 2018 and I can honestly say he is an AMAZING professor! He makes the course material very fun. I wish I had more math classes to take because he's great! I'm going to miss his class lectures. He doesn't require you to buy the book. Expect a quiz every time you finish a chapter,so don't slack off&study!

Stats can be hard depending on the person who is teaching you how it works. Mr Bates has a solid teaching method that helps you understand how stats works. Attendance is important because he gives pop up quizzes. He is hilarious and keeps your attention full lecture. I highly recommend!!

Bates is amazing! He makes lecture interesting and easy to understand. Everything you need to succeed in the class he gives it to you (notes, reference sheets, practice problems), you don't need textbook. We did 3 projects, and had 2 midterms and the final. Exams are relatively easy if you understand the material and use the cheat cheat he allows.

YO! Took him for a 4 week summer session and it was abreez! Had to study a little bit it wasnt overwhelming. Class was from 9-1 5x a week but I def was looking forward to it. Hes so funny. And easy to understand. Like REALLY FUNNY!! Def recomendable if you are able to to take him for stats.

Professor Bates has a heavy sense of humor but teaches Statistics very clear for everyone to understand how it is used in real life. Personally, he was difficult to reach outside of class through his ways of contact (email or txt), it is best to always get help from him in person. So don't wait till the last minute for anything.

Professor Bates knows his information. Attendance is mandatory because he gives out quizzes in the beginning of the class or at the end of the class ,but he test his students once or twice a week. Mr. Bates is by far the funniest professor I've ever met. He gives amazing lecture, so no matter how sleepy you are, you'll have that energy on class. If you hate math and don't understand it, take him!! He is so organized and explains everything so well. He also applies math to daily life to help students understand better. He also doesn't move on until everyone understands the chapter. Theres small quizzes weekly but its nothing you can't handle. He also drops 5 of your lowest scores.

I took his class online due to the pandemic. Professor Bates was awesome. He had pre-recorded lectures that were organized & thorough. We met twice a week over zoom & he went over the topics & answered any questions. Two quizzes weekly but nothing too rough. Accepted late work all the way up until the last day of the semester w/o any deductions.

Took this class for the Fall 2020 semester, the professor is clear on grading and lectures. The lectures are recorded and are very informational. During zoom sessions, the professor can answer any questions about the course material.

I absolutely LOATHED taking math classes up until Professor Bates. This was the first time in my life that I 100% understood the material in class. Hands down the best professor for this math class. He makes learning math super fun. Do all the work including the support assignments and honors and you will do well in the class. Make sure you show up to the webinars and pay close attention so you do not have to ask the same question someone else just asked. Prof. Bates made me love math again!

I took Intro to Statistics and couldn't be happier i chose him as a professor! He was fun, clear, and direct with his expectations. I was terrified of taking another math class since l took Algebra 10 years ago but he completely reassured me & provided additional handouts for people needing to refresh topics and E.C! He reminds me of a nice dad. Tells jokes, helpful, and kind. He knows his stuff. Expects you to bring your calculators every class period. He is a wonderful professor! His lectures tie in with real-life situations which makes studying stats worthwhile studying. I never expected someone like me to take a 4 week online 4 credit stats class, get an A+, and actually learn literally everything. His lectures are amazing (just put on 2x), and his class is so organized. If you have an iPad and notability/good notes, you're set.

Midterm and final exam for online summer class were in person but he gave you two different options of days where you could come complete it. He is the BEST!! Take him!!!!!

Great Professor! I took this course during the summer so it was a hybrid class. Mandatory in person on campus timed exams with cheat sheets. A lot of homework but also videos from Mr. Bates himself explaining how to complete every problem. Scores fairly and will let you redo incorrect problems for full credit. Overall awesome class!

Professor Bates is the best hands down! he is the only Profssr that made me realize I don't hate math, I actually love it! He really knows how to teach so if you fail his class, it's because you really didn't try hard enough. He makes the lectures so fun and interesting, he shows you how to actually understand Math. He knows his material very well.

Professor Bates is an excellent instructor. His lectures keep you engaged while also learning in the process. 25 quizzes total minus the 2 midterms and final but it never seemed like a lot. Very easy and you can use your notes. Ask questions if confused, he will always be happy to help. Extra credit is provided as well. Definitely take him!
