He makes sure everything is clear in lectures. Very helpful. Answers emails and questions promptly. Overall a great prof.
VERY GOOD professor.. highly recommended
The course itself is very condensed and needs a lot of work. The prof is one of the best at York though..open to questions and willing to help..his tests include short answer questions which make them more difficult. However, he will make adjustments if there are questions that are answered poorly by all students.overall I would highly recommend him
willing to help. tests are extremely difficult and hard to predict. question types include: SA, LA, T/F, MC
Teaches clearly in class and always willing to help. Tests are fair if you attend and study the recommended material. He cracks up jokes in class and makes lecture material interesting.
Great prof! makes things interesting and explains things well.
he is a good prof but his tests are pretty hard and the textbook is literally useless you better just focus on coming to classes and taking notes and read what he gives you in slides and you will be ok.
Approachable, helpful, explains concepts really well, makes lectures interesting, fair tests but tough marker.
Best prof I've met so far at York, and this is my 3rd year. Interesting lecturer and super approachable. Tests are pretty much all based on his lecture slides, so I found them quite simple. Just put some time and effort into it and you can definitely pull off an A, A+.
Awesome Prof, had him for summer. The 1st test was rather easy (amino acids stuff & HH equation)... Just pay attention to what he says to memorize. No structures. 2nd test took everyone for surprise, was awful hard. To give him credit though, the final was fair. I would suggest to try and understand, as application are the hardest Qs.
Very approachable. Wants to help students understand everything as much as possible. Never puts off any student regardless of how many questions they ask. Great teacher. Tests are appropriate for a 3rd year course but they can be hard to study for because there is so much material and tests have application questions. Does adjust marks if needed.
He is my favourite prof at York!! His lectures are clear, he's funny and he's always willing to help students out. Wish he taught some 4th year courses; i'd love to take more classes with him. Tests are not tricky at all but they do require you to know all the material in the slides. Overall, amazingly awesome prof. :)
Amazing prof, posts very detailed slides to follow along. Don't need to take too many additional notes except for the gels and various data. Too many experiments and proteins to remember them all but that's part of the course. So much better than Molecular I with Crerar. Hot prof!
He taught my BIOL2020 and BIOL3130 classes. Amazing prof, extremely engaging, you definitely won't get bored in his classes. He grades fairly and is very helpful and respectful to his students. Above all, he is crystal clear and makes sure everyone understands what he lectures. TAKE HIS COURSES! Put in an effort and you won't regret it.
K I seriously don't know what ppl are talking about TRUST ME DONT TAKE HIM! I screwed up big caz of him! He dznt follow the txt and will make it seem like his tests are going to be the easiest thing in the world...BUT that is so not the case! He will give u a bunch of options like only a, a and b, a and b and c, that u are bound to get it wrong!
Dr. Bayfield is the best professor at York, he is very helpful, nice ,young enthusiastic, answer questions perfectly and respond to emails very quickly. I took Biol 2020 with him in summer 2012 and got A. I wish to take another course with him. Simply, he is PERFECT
Amazing prof! He tells you that test material will be from his slides (don't really need the textbk). He makes himself available to students for extra help. In the summer, he holds tutorials for tests..ATTEND THEM! They will clarify what's most likely to be on the test. The tests are detailed so know the slides thoroughly (READ diagram captions).
Amazing Proff, I highly recommend him. He explains very well & his slides are very useful. He is the best
Can't say enough about this prof, he is the best hands down. very nice, helpful and amazing!! wish he teaches advanced biochem since I am taking it in winter 2013. Oh I forgot to say that he got the bluest eyes ever
The best prof ever, he makes lectures very interesting unlike other lectures that I mostly fall asleep when I attend them :P
Pretty straight forward, but you need to go to every lecture. Course is heavily lecture based. Get a hold of past midterms and exams if possible!!!
AMAZING prof, loves what he does. Keeps you engaged. As a bio major, I don't get to laugh very much during lectures, so coming to his class was always fun. Knows what he's talking about. I killed him with e-mails and he never failed to respond to any of them! VERY helpful. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
For a subject that I struggled so hard in he was the absolute best teacher/mentor possible! I kept improving after the first midterm! Thanks Dr.Bayfield!
He is a very good professor. He makes the subject so interesting, and his exams are fair enough. If you study hard, you should get at least an A or an A+. One of the best professors ever. Thanks MB! ^^
Overall a very good professor. Tests are very very hard, as you must know a great deal of detail. Very approachable as a person, cares a lot about his students and the subject he is teaching. I haven't opened the textbook once, waste of money on my part. Wouldn't recommend buying one at all. A lot of time must be invested in the class to do well.
Quite possibly the best professor at York. Gifted teacher and communicator; expresses even the most complex of topics in a manner that somebody with limited background knowledge could grasp with ease. VERY fair tests (no surprises). Every lecture is highly entertaining and very hard to doze off in. I'd recommend MB over any prof I've had thus far.
Very fun class, Bayfield is the best! Easy tests too! And you learn WAY more than one normally would from a single class.
I think he's a great professor, he explains things in such relatable, understandable way, and makes everybody further develop not only their knowledge, but their passion for science. That said, he likes to challenge his audience in his tests. His tests are 100% fair and are only on material covered, but pay attention in class!
Amazing. If you're going to take BIOL 2020, this is the prof you want. Tests are fair if you pay attention to close details. Very approachable and is passionate about the subject.
Good prof. But tests were very memory based. If your good at memorizing info great prof for that.
Very good professor, his lectures are very interesting and he is unintentionally funny during many occasions. You'll learn a lot in his class, but be aware that his tests are NOT easy, he is very detailed oriented, so ANYTHING on his lecture slides are fair game; his multiple choice questions are designed to make you think critically.
Hard Course, good proff. Memorize everything. You will learn a lot. He made me love brutally hard molecular biology. This course will literally put you lightyears ahead of others in terms of molecular bio.
An amazing prof. Slightly challenging tests though. I'd say an easy A, Slightly challenging A+
Very detail oriented. Dont really need to go throught the textbook. Just memorize whatever you see on his slides and an A or A+ should not be hard.
Great lecturer, makes difficult material understandable. I was forced to work hard and learned a lot by the end. Some mixed feelings about his exam questions though; and I'm not sure how some people can think this is an easy A course. Biochem was difficult and I'm just glad I was with a prof who could teach.
He is hands down one of the best profs I've ever had, I hope they make him a full time prof at york. He is super funny and engages the class. the course material is not difficult but there is way too much material that are covered and you need to know and remember and not confuse to get a good grade, I would not say an easy A+. biol 3031
He's a fantastic lecturer. Very enthusiastic about the material. If you come to class, and get to know him, you will get more from the class. Tests are hard, but fair. Do not take if you don't love molecular biology. There are many many experiments and their results that get discussed, and while interesting, make it really difficult.
He as a nice prof but the tests can require a bit too much studying/memorizing in order to get high grades, and even though the tests focus on the lecture slides, there is a lot of material. Pretty low class average for the midterms, but if you study early and study hard (or have photographic memory) you can get a decent grade!
Don't bother with the textbook. I didnt open it once and I am going into the exam with an A. MEMORIZE EVERYTHING; Midterms are very content heavy but if you understand everything (emphasis on memorizing everything...) he posts, you will do well. The content is manageable, and Bayfield's lecturing sparked a deep interest for BCHM
Great, amazing prof! Makes the lectures interesting and tests are good as long as you attend the classes, make notes, and memorize them!
He is extremely knowledgable, super helpful during office hour. Lectures are informative. Midterms are fair as long as you study the slide and listen to the lecture recording.
Could tell he was passionate about the class, lectures are all online, memorize everything he says, never opened the textbook once and finished with an A+, he's an amazing professor. Course is incredibly content-dense, don't ask him what will be on the test
If you're taking molecular bio part 2 then take it with this prof! The lecturers are really interesting and you will enjoy studying for the tests :)
Awesome prof! The course is predominantly focused on examining the techniques/methodologies that led to molecular bio discoveries. Understand very well the concepts he covers in class and memorize the small details. No textbook required, just lecture recordings. A/A+ is definitely achievable.
really tries to make you understand things if you dont.
Excellent professor! I may not have done well in this class, but it was not at all his fault. Clear grading scheme, tries his best to explain and make sure everyone understands before moving on. Content heavy, but if you review and memorize the day of, it'll be less pressure during exams. Memorize key word. Attendance isn't necessary.
He's a great prof. If you want to do well, memorise his audio recordings. When going over a slide maybe only 75% of it is emphasised, he'll specify during lecture which ideas to concentrate on. It's difficult though, you have to be extremely sharp otherwise little details will fly over your head. He gave bonus marks throughout the term too
Prof Bayfield is an amazing prof, one of the best I've had at York. He's extremely clear in his lectures and really cares about students (also has a good sense of humour). Just study the lecture notes-Textbook not required. Exam was tougher than the midterms but still fair game. HIGHLY recommend him!!
Awesome prof! Go through the lecture recordings and you'll ace the midterms.
decent prof and did well in his class but felt as though I didnt learn anything (until you reach the 3rd section-metabolism).
Records the lectures so if you miss class or something he says it is easy to listen to them. The textbook is not used and everything on the midterm is from his notes or what he says. Make sure to listen to what he says as not everything tested is explicitly written in the notes. Also seems to genuinely care about students. Recommended!
Prof Bayfield is one of the best biology professors I've had. His lectures (which are recorded) are extremely clear and concise. No need for the useless textbook. He curves grades on midterms and the final. But, his tests and final are very detail-oriented and require loads of memorization. However, with hard work, an "A" grade is achievable.
Great prof. He posts lecture recordings online which is extremely helpful. If you want to do well in his course go over his actual lecture recordings because he mentions testable material that isn't written on his powerpoint slides. I went over all of his lecture recordings multiple times and got an A + in the course. Textbook is not needed.
Professor Bayfield is very clear in all his lectures and if you don't understand something, you can go over the lecture recordings you post online. All the details that are needed for the midterms and final are in his lectures. Make sure to give yourself enough time to memorize the content and you'll end up with a good mark.
course is too easy. studied for the midterms and final a day before and got a 98 final. just ask questions and pay attention in class.
This was the HARDest course I have ever taken at York University. I'm very smart and I always study a day before my exams and ace but for this course I started studying from the first day, listened to every lecture at least twice(came up to 70 hours) and I still feel like I'm going to fail. Amazing prof but the outline is too much!! TOO MUCH!
I just finished molecular biology part 2 with him and it was a world of a difference after I took Peter Cheung for part 1. You will need to memorize, and apply your knowledge so its hard work, but very do-able. This prof explains things sooooo much better. He makes you truly understand. I wish he taught both parts. Amazing prof.
Grade lower than 3110. Lowest grade. The SA Qs mostly did not ask to demonstrate what you know. What was expected to know was not efficiently developed in class. You either figured it out, or not. I feel that the lec failed to properly prepare for the tests. I recommend to do the assignment as a small boost. What he drew was not asked about.
Hands down one of the best profs I had at this university. Super fair, straight-to-the-point and charismatic! Really wants all his students to do well but you will still have to put in work.
He is an awesome and fair prof, he goes straight-to-the-point and tells u what he expects you to know on the test because biochem is a heavy course. I loved taking biochem with him, although it is a packed course he still had fun with it. Sir you rock!!!
Amazing prof, but a hard course. There's a lot of material to learn and memorize, but having him as a prof makes it easier because he's great at explaining things and is very clear and concise.
Mark is an amazing professor. I would definitely recommend taking a course with him.
Thanks to this site I have had my fair share of good profs in my program but so far I consider Mark to be the best one. He's very knowledgable in his field and is able to explain the materials very clearly I didn't purchase the textbook and listened to each lecture recording twice and ended up with an A+. Heavy course load but exams are reasonable.
Easily the best biology teacher Ive ever had. No textbook required, minimal studying required, listen to his lectures either in person or via lecture recordings and you are bound to succeed. Failed the course in the winter semester and retook it with Bayfield in the summer and got a B+ without studying. BEST TEACHER EVER.
No textbook required! Course is very heavy so give yourself enough time to study. Mark's great!
After finishing Molec 1 I was scared to take part II, but professor Bayfield is a clear, charismatic lecturer who takes the time to thoroughly explain complicated topics and is very open to questions from students. Molec II is a HARD course, but he made it feel achievable. Attend lectures and watch the recordings and you'll do just fine!
Dr. Bayfield made this course more interesting than expected. The course itself is difficult but he makes it as clear as he can, he even posted pre lecture recordings. He posts his recordings so you can review them later and goes through as much as he can. He's the best professor I've had in my four years in biology because he genuinely cares.
An enthusiast of the course and expects the same from you. He's a good prof however, Our total class time for every week was 6 hours! even though it should have been 3 hours. He had in class reviews in addition to lecture videos. He's so enthusiastic that instead of directly explaining the concepts he makes it harder. Tests were extremely hard.
Mark Bayfield is an amazing prof. The course itself is heavy on the material. A lot of concepts and understanding of experiments is crucial but an A is still obtainable. Mark changed the format to include clickers and a group test for mark boosters. He also got rid of questions that students did poorly on and put some bonuses on tests!
This professor is bad at explaining and exams had nothing to do with what he talked about in class. If you care for your gpa then do not take this prof!
I am a fourth year biomedical science student, and this professor is the best I had at York.. He likes what he is doing and his lectures are so interesting.. This professor makes me love the course and if I have the chance to take this course again with him I will take it 10000 times. Trust me this professor is the best professor you can have
MCQ, if you are not good at it then practice from the beginning. Reviewing material regularly and asking questions for clarification helps. Overall good prof. Would take him again. Just felt prof was focused towards some people during lecture more than others in compare to all others profs I had. Get ready for clickers so pay attention during lect
Dr. Bayfield is an amazing lecturer, very clear and makes the topic engaging. People will complain about everything being tough, but don't be discouraged: A/A+ is very doable. Really keep up with the content and ask for help to understand experiments. This is how to do well! Fav course i've taken at york yet.
Great guy, but my god. Too much text on the slide, and exams are difficult as hell, and out of like /25, so a few mistakes and you can say bye bye to your GPA. He's such a good professor, but makes this class unnecessarily hard to score well in.
Prof Bayfield is a legend! He's so passionate about what he teaches that you can't help but love his courses! He teaches very well and explains things so clearly, and you can tell he has a brilliant mind! He's very down to earth and chill, and he's always cracking jokes. Really fun experience. Exams were fair but pay attention to what he says!
If it werent for the final exam i would give him 5/5. The final was so unfair. Midterms were fair, not just because they were online, but the questions were fair. The exam was mash of trick questions. Also, it was super based on memorizing, something which he said wouldnt be the case. Most traumatic exam i have ever done
Wonderful professor. I really did not like the online midterms as they were mostly based around how fast you could recall a certain topic while the final was more conceptual and focused on actual applications of the things you learned. Overall amazing course and prof!
He's a very good prof, but this course was way too complicated. Averages for both midterms were low (despite it being online) and the final exam was unfair. There was no formula sheet, and a lot of questions were based on pure memorization instead of understanding of the content. If you put lots of work into this course you can achieve a good grade
If you memorize what he says is important to know in class and take detailed notes, you'll do well. There is a lot of content so you do need to be reviewing regularly, but his midterms and exams were more than fair.
He is a great prof, the lectures might be a little boring (the course is content heavy). However his slides give you all detailed needed for midterms and finals. I founded the midterms and the final very fair.
Professor Bayfield, is by far one of the best professors I have had. I loved his teaching style and how he takes the effort to clear everything detail up, Biochem is not an easy course but he sure made it easier with his test being relative to what is taught in class! 100% will take him again for BIOL 3130, highly recommend him!
Favourite class I've taken over the course of my degree so far! (not to glaze) Prof Bayfield thoroughly explains material that may look overwhelming in a way that's easy to digest. Make sure to write down details he mentions that aren't included in the slides! The midterms and final exam are very straightforward if you know your stuff. Good luck!
His lectures contain a ton of material and he constantly goes back changing what's being said making it incredibly difficult to determine what is actually right and what you are supposed to take away. Likes to use the board which is impossible to read even when sitting at the front of the room. Super nice and friendly but class is a nightmare.
Professor Bayfield is one of the best professors at YorkU. Despite the course being challenging, he teaches very well, explains throughly and has a genuine passion for what he teaches. If you take notes and study, you're bound to do well although the course is on more of a difficult side. Exams are fair and he's very knowledgeable and helpful.
Very nice class, responds immediately to emails, explains concepts well and not to mention he's also a good-looking guys :)
Great professor, hard course, a lot of memorization since his section is mostly theory based and about knowing the theories. Recommend to make flashcards for this course that's how you can get a good grade. Make sure to go over slides as well
The course itself is pretty difficult and really info-heavy, so it's easy to fall behind during lectures. But the professor is amazing, he genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
loml he's so pookie
first day in class #livelaughlovemark #savingmybiochemmarkihope #hesfunny 😛
he's genuinely one of the best professors at York so far. He makes you actually enjoy seating and taking notes in his class. I really enjoy learning in his class and he makes it so easy to understand the concept. One of the only classes I actually look for forward too! He's very specific about what he actually wants you to know which is so amazing.
This man is Jesus incarnate.
I think i'm in love with him - Thank you
Great prof. nothing bad to say. it's clear that he enjoys teaching and cares about his students. he makes it very clear during lecture what he expects students to know for the test. His lectures are engaging and easy to follow… as someone who has ADHD I was able to actually focus and understand what he was teaching.
Hands down best prof I've ever had. He's clear about what you need to know and his teaching style is so engaging. Second half of the course was taught by him and it made me acctually look forward to class. For such an information heavy course he broke things down well and made it easy to ask questions.
One of the best! Clear about what he expects from students, not easy but fair tests. Lectures and explanations are just amazing. Interesting assignments that you would enjoy if you like the course
Amazing prof hes literally the bees knees
