The coolest teacher I ever had. He is very polite, very knowledgeable, and will genuinly help students learn the different topics. Has a pretty cool acsent! An easy "A" if you attend his classes. Don't need to take much notes at all. Easy tests, rarely any HW, what more could you ask for!

Cool guy, VERY nice, EASY class, He remindes me of grounds keeper willy on the simpsons. take this class
GET IN MY BELLY!!!!!!! cool guy
nice enough guy. little homework. horsed-up exams. easy A. not necessarily much learning.
Excellent teacher. Does his best to explain the material and wants everyone to understand. If you pay attention in class and take notes, you will easily pass the mutiple-choice tests.
A very helpful professor. He also takes the time to get to know his students during the 15 minute break time he gives.
very nice!I like the way he teach. Easy Clear and helpful. good job teacher
This is guy is great! He's from Scotland originally and always makes class exciting. Though he isn't the easiest, this guy knows his stuff and is a joy to learn from.
please don't take this class online or in class. you will fail. for in class the best you can get is a C. if you want a better than take someone else. i got a D for his class online. too much reading. he is scotland and you won't understand him.....
Way too difficult. Don't take him if you want to have ease with the course. This was to be an intro course and it seemed more like for computer science majors.

Use funny examples to relate to topic
I couldn't believe that in 2005, they were still teaching MS-DOS as an operating system. Super easy class, but didn't learn anything I didn't already know.
Provides you with he neccessary tools to get a good grade. Just study his online powerpoints and everything is covered in their in the test. you have 4 test the whole year if you get perfect scores on 3 you don't have to take final. thiers no reason why you can't get at least a B (which i expect to get).Oh and he drops lowest grade. I RECCOMEND HIM
Easy class online and inclass as long as you pay attention and listen. He'll teach you everything in a way anyone will understand. I've had a few classes with him and he's never used the book they claim you need so just save yourself the time and money and dont get it.
Awesome professor!! Love his accent, plus his anecdotes and metaphors. He does NOT use the book, he posts a ton of notes on blackboard (you have to read them, a lot of the info was on the tests and he didn't normally go over them in class), and he's got practice quizzes on blackboard that are REALLY helpful - the questions on the quizzes are the qu
He is nice
he is a great teacher.he posted all the material online, test are easy as long as you study the material.it is not an easy A but you learn alot.student who just want a easy one,he is not for you.i got an A but i worked very hard for it.he is one of the best teacher this school has.
This guy really knows his stuff and has a very engaging classroom manner, a potent combination. Highly recommended. Not easy but not too hard, just right!
He's a pretty good professor. The class material is boring though. You don't really need to go to class beside in the first few weeks and the tests!
You will never be able to learn anything in this class unless you have a prior experience with hardware, OS and binary digits. Even though previous comments are pretty good, I do not recommend taking him!
OMG professor, I know only nerds are writing in here, but I couldn't be quite about it. He doesn't teach he just talks, if you will be asking questions may be you will learn something. His Scotland accent makes the lecture so boring and not flowing, so bring the pillow with you. Take him if you already know a lot of advanced stuff about computer.
The textbook is only need if people who have know clue to use word, PowerPoint, and excel. If you know about computers you will be fine. He does have any accent but understandable. Makes Jokes. Does talk alot but help if you ask. Attendance is important. Just foucus and do the work. You will be fine. Only an idiot can get an F in the class or profes
I had him in ITE 221 and thought he was good. If you miss something in lecture he has notes online and very helpful online practice quizzes for each test you can take as many times as you want. If you study and take those quizzes the tests are easy to pass.
mr beattie isnt a good teacher. i missed an exam. he wouldnt let me make it up. i knew all the info but he all the students hate the 2nd exam and not to sweat it. i got a poor grade on 3rd exam and got an 87.5 on my final. i emailed him asking him if i could take the 2nd exam cuz it would give me a higher grade and he didnt even respond to my email
He is a good guy but a horrible professor
He is fairly easy, if you ask and take time to learn the material you're good to go. Missing a class will get you lost if you have no previous knowledge about OS hardware..
just do the practice exams online and you'll be fine. he can be a picky grader, but whatever. listen during lectures, book is pointless except it is needed for the final assignment. pay attention to due dates. it's easy to mess up your grade by not checking blackboard. doesn't ask for much, just stay on top of your work.
Fantastic teacher. Enthusiastic and keeps the class involved. Don't need the book (or get old version). You'd have to be pretty absent minded not to do well in this course. Do the practice exams and read the online material and you'll ace it. His lectures are great also.
Best teacher ever!!! Funny guy. Take him
Bottom line is that he has a great personality, but he's not a great teacher. He's very smart with his field, but teaching it to someone is not the same. Hybrid course was not helpful at all, becuz you learn 90% of things by yourself. If you want to learn easily from in-class teacher's demonstration, take a full in-seat class.
Funny and easy teacher =) You wont need the textbook and i wouldnt bother taking notes, i took notes and never used them. As long as you take the practice exams on blackboard, u'll pass. Easy A :D
Took the hybrid course. Professor is nice and enthusiastic, but the course is mainly self taught. There is rarely any hw though.
I took his online class "Operating Systems/Software Utilities" way back in 2004. The first time I failed because that's what usually happens when I take online classes. I took it again and got an A. He was nice and the class was pretty easy when I took the time to do the work. Unfortunately the class doesn't count towards my major anymore!:(
He is a great guy, and he is funny as well. However, he tends to talk about things that are not relevant during class. If you are looking for a helpful teacher, look elsewhere.
Best teacher ever.
I wish I could have Mark for all my ITE classes, extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Class is very interesting, he is lively, prepared, and does not ramble. (idk what the other person was talking about). Honestly the best college teacher i've had yet.
He's a cool guy. Really makes you feel comfortable when you approach him with questions. He treats you like a friend and I really respected him for that.Class isn't too hard, just take the practice quizzes. Don't buy the book, trust me you will never use it. Oh and he plays Quake lol
I took his hybrid course and it was easy. We had three exams, which we dropped our lowest grade and a final. He gave extra credit also. Great Professor.
Great teacher, fun and relaxed class, explains the stuff pretty good, answers questions, etc. Don't underestimate the difficulty though, you have to review the material before every test or you will have a bad time, he has lots of practice questions on blackboard, overall great teacher.
He's one of the best teacher at NVCC. He tries to help students and answers every question. textbook is no used. I got A on this but it's wasn't that easy.
GREAT PROFESSOR. Honestly he makes learning the material 2nd nature. He has great and hilarious analogies that make it very easy to understand. His relationship with the class is more of a friend rather than a student/teacher one with the class. If you go to his class, take notes, do his practice quizzes you will do great. Strongly recommend him.
This was the best teacher I have ever had. The course was an not an easy A, but I really learned a lot!
Really great teacher. He does make class interesting. Review the material for tests and quizzes.
Funny, Scottish guy. Classes are enjoyable and he finds ways to translate seemingly complicated material into something you can relate to. Would not suggest taking his hybrid ITE115 class unless you have some familiarity with Microsoft Word, Access, and Powerpoint. Overall great teacher.
He is an awesome person and I enjoyed his teaching, but the class left me really confused. The only things that were graded were exams, making the total points out of about 200. So I wouldn't recommend him if you have test anxiety or are not a computer person (the questions aren't always discussed in class). If you're an IT major, he's an easy A
Wonderful! great teacher! I have learned more in this class than any other class I have ever taken!
Very nice professor. Don't need the book even if he says you do. Everything is on the slides. 3 exams worth 30% each. Drops the lowest. If you got 100% on all 3 you will get an A and don't need to take the final. Otherwise, final is worth 40%. Exams are all multiple choice. Practice exams are online. He teaches very well. Take good notes.
Attendance not graded. He has a brilliant way of teaching. He uses colors and pictures which really help you understand how a computer works. He is an expert teacher. Highly recommended.
Well.. I ended up dropping his class because he doesn't even know what he is doing. He becomes impatient when the WHOLE class doesnt know what he asked to do. He may be a good ITE class professor but not in JAVA. Trust me, avoid him in this class. JAVA class is hard to teach, but come on, it wouldnt take much effort to explain syntax clearly.
HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING. END OF THE CONVO.
I like him when I took ITE 115. Thought he's good in java since hes an awesome ite instructor but nope. He gives out homework, tell everyone its graded but never checks it. Plus he always use google to search how to solve a problem. Arent he supposed to review his lectures before going to class? He is hilarious tho, but thats it.
Worst IT Class so far. Didn't learn anything. Schedules are messed up. Tells you to google the solution instead of teaching it. Instructions are unclear. I always wonder if he's certified to teach java.
Good teacher
I learned a lot in this class. It is a hybrid class with lost of home work. so If you do not keep up with the homework it is easy to fall behind. Dr Beattie convinced me to change my major to IT. I think he is one of the smartest teachers I have ever known.
best teacher
HORRIFIC. Final test was made by collaboration of all JAVA teachers so the practice questions he provided was not helpful at all. I did not learn anything at all aside from googling JAVA solutions and FINALS are closed notes and NO GOOGLE. He even admitted to class that it's his first time teaching JAVA after 8 years. Wow.. I can't. I really can't.
He's a bad java professor. I regret taking his class.
I've taken multiple courses with Beattie, and he really is a great professor. However, teaching Java is not his strong point, and I cannot recommend his Java class. But if you're considering one of his other classes, don't hesitate to enroll. He knows his material and (with the exception of Java) knows how to teach it. He's also entertaining.
Worst and hardest teacher
worst teacher ever no idea what hes talking about. I don't recommend you take him if you don't know the subject.
He is from Scotland so he has this weird accent that i didn't like at all. He is always rushing and his lectures are confusing, the notes on his blackboard but they are so long and you have to do a lot of reading. Do not take him but if you're smart and like to read a lot i guess you can take him. NOVA needs more good IT professors.
One of the best professors I've had. He knows the material very well and makes it easy to understand. If you attend class and read the notes, the class is easy. He drops your lowest test grade, tells you what to study, and gives a 10 percent curve.
Do not take him. He cannot teach JAVA. If you go into this expecting him to teach you java you are wrong. You must teach yourself to pass the class. He gives out 3 tests all of which are hard. He does not prepare you for the final which is a 14 page programming assignment. Terrible Java professor. Funny guy though.
Best NOVA teacher!
It is a hard class, but you learn a lot.
Love this guy. He is really really smart and he is also a great teacher.
Loved him! Has a Scottish accent and only writes key words on the board so you have to really listen to what he's saying. 3 tests and a final. he drops the lowest test grade of the 3. Would totally take him again he's great and easy to talk to about life in general! class only met once a week
Honestly, what he teaches, isnt important. All you need is to study from the practice questions on blackboard (basically the same questions on the test). and just know how to work word, excel, and powerpoint. He may be able to help with those questions
Great professor! He is there to help you with anything you have questions about. There is only 3 exams which may be difficult but as long as you do the readings in the book and practice exams it will be easy A.
He's great. Love him.
Cool guy. Super nice. Easy class.
Nice teacher. He helps you learn what you need to know.
Very knowledgeable, but you have to pay attention. He only puts key words on the board, aside from that just talks. No real attendance policy, but if you miss class, you miss a lot! Only 3 exams and a final, and he drops the lowest grade out of the 3 exams. He's an easy A, but you have to pay attention.
1 of best NOVA profs! Extremely thorough knowledge of everything IT. No use of Powerpoint, lectures refreshingly easy to follow. Awesome Scottish accent, is super animated and makes it exciting to learn. Draws funny cartoons to help you remember things. Book not req if you take notes. Lots of material covered which makes tests hard but MC so study!
Prof. Beattie was amazing. His Scottish accent was very easy to understand, and personally I LOVED his accent. He's a funny guy and makes sure that everyone understands what he's explaining. He draws interesting diagrams on the board for you and thoroughly explained each part of it. All exams and quizzes are really close to the practice ones.
If you want to learn, then he's the right guy. No need for book. Pay attention. Take as many as practice tests you can. He's fun.
He is the best prof i've ever had. I would take a class like this I would definitely take him. I had him as my prof for 5 weeks and it was so nice I learn for a short time. Take him!
I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Beattie. He is very clear in his explanations, his lectures are easy to follow, and he never surprises you with what will be on an examination. I also appreciated the practical nature of many of the exams. He is also super friendly and down to earth. If you need to take an IT class, take Dr. Beattie!
Professor Beattie is amazing Teacher! T A K E HIM Great class, fun lectures. I dont normally like lecture because most professors bore you. This was the first class that made me wish the class was longer. No homework.
Professor Beattie is a decent professor. He drops the lowest exam grade out of 3 exams. Final Exam is multiple choice based on the 3 exams. You will learn a lot in this course. In this course alone, you will get an idea of how to write HTML(web design/coding) and learn the functions behind computers. Just review your notes and you'll be fine.
Has a caring attitude towards students, his lectures on IT stuff are pretty informative. He wants you to get involved into the IT experience. The course only has 4 exams which comprise of 3 sections each. Very easy to do and he drops the lowest exam grade which will help you curve your grade by a lot. Also gives extra credit!
Nice guy. Awesome class.
Super nice guy with awesome lectures and good dry erase markers for writing examples on the board. i learned a lot
For my opinion taking professor Mark Beatie was not a good idea at least for my learning type. I didn't receive clear instructions he is not organized especially for his syllabus was not up to date. He doesn't explain much and just talks. if you can learn well by yourself then take his class but if you need more instruction i don't recommend.
Great Teacher
Nice Professor but I don't like his style of teaching where you have to teach yourself. Since I took ITE 115 as a hybrid, I had a lot of work in the textbook and his syllabus and exams weren't organized. Also the last exam is really hard. If you can't self teach them don't take him! He is also rude in class sometimes when ppl don't do their work.
I took a dynamic course. We never handed in homework which made the test difficult as I felt we didn't actually learn anything of value in class. However, he is so positive and caring when you need help that it makes it hard to be negative. If you are already familiar with computers and ite related things it'll be an easy A
Pretty easy to get a decent grade since he is fair with grading and drops the lowest exam. Did not purchase the textbook, and barely went to class and still got an A. The multiple choice can be a little challenging but the rest is common sense.
This class was tough. But Prof. Beattie is awesome. There's a lot of material to learn in the class, and I tried cramming before the first exam - I did poorly. He drops the lowest test exam though. After that, I studied the material weekly. He has practice exams on BB too, which were helpful. One day, I hope to be as knowledgeable as Prof. Beattie.
Professor Beattie is very nice and he'll give you several chances to boost your grade through extra credit or even just a reminder to do the work he assigned. Loves to say all the exams are "easy-peesy" lol which was not always what I thought but if you do the work and study it should be an easy A.
This class is tough. There are 3 hard exams (drop the lowest one), one project and a pretty easy final exam. You need to work very hard since there are a lot of difficult stuffs needed to memorize by heart. Prof has course documents on Blackboard, so students do not have to purchase textbook. Practice quizzes are helpful, especially in final exam.
This course is not easy at all! I was thinking to give up but I studied so hard and I did not sleep for my last project and I pass with A. The last project is the most important! I got 13 and 14 in my 1 and 2 test and I did not understand his classes, but I practiced with the online quiz and I get 17 in the final and I worked hard in my project
I wasn't expecting much from ITE221. Dr. Beattie went far above and beyond expectations to deliver an engaging and memorable course. His ability to visually demonstrate and explain concepts was exceptional and made comprehension and retention much easier as a result. I would definitely look for courses taught by him along the same path.
Really nice guy and great professor. Loves taking questions and answering them to the best of his ability. He is obviously passionate about what he teaches and does a superb job at it.
Teaches very well during the lecture and doesn't give out too much hw
The nicest man which makes him very likable. Im currently taking him so I cant say much other than I love his lectures
Impossible to cheat on tests, he makes them, as well as the study guides. Overall he is a nice person willing to help, and he is also a really good teacher, overall. If you want to learn take him. If you want an easy A then find someone else or you are going to be screwed.
Excellent professor that makes a boring subject interesting. He's always quick to respond to emails and encourages students to call him with questions whether specific to class or just the IT field in general. No reason anyone should get a bad grade if they attend class, participate, and do their assignments.
He gives no hw or assignments. Only 4 tests, can drop 1. Tests are difficult and there is no study guide. Doesn't answer chat questions, ignores them. Although he is nice, it doesn't make up for the lack of resources to help prepare for the material. I would highly recommend another teacher.
Professor Beattie is a down to heart person and is more than willing to help out any and all students that are struggling to grasp the material. His tests are predictable as long as you actually study the material and utilize his course notes that he explicitly posts. Don't study? Won't pass.
Professor is very knowledgeable. If you are not an organized person do not take the class. Two modules/chapters, plus 2 end of unit quizzes each week, 3 tests total (1+midterm+final) and group project end of semester. Step by step homework, but lengthy, assignments. Has sense of humor, overall not a bad class. Hope I made an "A"!
First of all there are very limited resources to study for the tests. No power point presentations, his lecture is really disorganized and hard to take note on. He might start from one topic and jump to another topic unrelated which makes it really hard to take notes. Safe yourself...
Professor Beattie is a solid choice. His lectures are meh. Fortunately, he records and posts the lectures onto Canvas. There are very few grades in the class. He makes up for this by giving extra credit. He curves your Exam 1 by 1.5 points and your exam 2 and 3 by 2 points. He then at the end of the semester drops your lowest exam score.
Best IT class taken at Nova even though it is really in Introduction to computers and concepts. Professor Beattie is very knowledgeable in the IT field. Gave out work from assignments to do on Cengage which was easy. The Cengage was required for Final. Gave us a website design project which was fun to code. class was awesome. I will miss this class
Professor Mark Beattie is amazing. He is funny, intelligent, sensible, and respectful and caring about people's IT progress. I'm gonna miss that Scottish guy forever man . He is good to talk to really knowledgeable in the IT field. I'm not studying IT but I took his class for a good reason. I will surely miss him. Bye Professor Beattie.
Professor Beattie is a great IT instructor. He explains concepts really well to understand for newbies. He cares about people's grades in this ITE 115 class. He gave us great assignments to complete with using Cengage Textbook. Word, Excel, and Powerpoint assignments were very easy to complete but fun to do. Take him again if you have to. Yay!
-Very good lecturer and super knowledgeable about the subject. -If you have bad test taking skills, avoid this class. -He offers 0 graded homework, so your entire grade is from four exams, a group project, and a lockdown browser test assignment. -You cannot slack in his class, pay attention and take notes, you'll need them. Not an easy A !
Pr.Beattie does things differently than other professors. He does his notes in some weird drawpad app and his handwriting is often not clear. Also your whole grade is dependent on 4 tests and a semester-long project with no specific due date seen. Also the tests, taken on Lockdown, do not cover his course notes and practice exams. Its all stressful
Professor Mark Beattie is a nice, caring, respectful, smart, & helpful professor. His lecture was good. The way he explained it during the lecture was pretty interesting. The OS project was no due date. It was pretty cool how he showed us how to do the project. The 4 test is on the lockdown browser. Take notes & show up to class on time.
This class is lecture heavy! If you like learning from a human being and not through a textbook or something like cengage, this is great. 4 tests, 1 project, participation makes up your grade. You will fail exams if you do not READ HIS NOTES and pay attention to the lecture. Difficult, but a very very very valuable course!!!
Do yourself a favor and don't take him, he doesn't offer any PowerPoint presentations or notes. Being late will result in a 2-point deduction. The professor does not assign any homework, and your grade is based on three difficult tests, a final exam, and one project. you will gain knowledge from this class but it can be incredibly stressful.
Professor provides 0 learning materials besides his hardly comprehensible notes and lectures in class. The grade is based solely on 4 tests and a project. I don't recommend this class if you don't know the basics of OS architecture yourself, and are ready to memorize A LOT of dry info. Professor Beattie is a great person, but not the best teacher..
Exams make up 70% of the grade (no textbook/notes). The only guide is lectures which he releases the same day as the next class, so good luck being able to study properly for exams. Furthermore, it is almost impossible to get ahold of him outside of the course; he doesn't respond to emails or inboxes. Won't say his office hours which are locked.
Pls do not take him. The class is very lecture heavy and he uses a word pad to go over his lectures. The problem is he's extremely unorgainzed so it can get confusing. Just an FYI, he uses lockdown browser for his exams. His exams are extremely hard and he doesn't give you access to review your exam to study for the final.
All the ratings below accurately summarize his class... save yourself time and money and find a professor that has structure or at least uses some learning materials. Prof provided 0 sources that help you learn. Everything comes from his lectures, and if you can't take notes fast enough and then study from those messy notes, you will fail.
Labs and assignments are very important here, quality learning oh yeah you'll get that. Just pay attention closely on assignments and labs and projects! You can easily get an A here and the professor is very smart and caring. Unlike some I met, who make classes difficult than what they actually are, if u catch my rhythm.
Oh my lanta this class was a rollercoaster. If you're good at the subject you'll be fine. Otherwise no.
Heavy lectures (all from his brain & unorganized) wont reference txtbook. 5 assignments; make Win&Linux VMs, 3 lecture notes (2pg, picky ab your notes). "Practice" exams and Exams are on lockdown, CAN'T GO BACK TO QUESTIONS nor review practice results, 2-3 questions from practice on exam. Many failed so he curved by 2 letter grades. Accepts late hw
If you don't like learning purely from lectures, avoid this class at all costs. That said, the lectures were well-conducted, informative, and beginner-friendly. Recordings are uploaded somewhat sporadically, but creating notes from them was easy. There were either 3 or 4 exams, graded on a curve, with the lowest score dropped. Exams via lockdown.
Prof. Beattie was an amazing teacher. work can be overwhelming sometimes especially if you start late but if youre on time and paying attention this class should be a breeze. Overall a great professor.
Really un-organized modules and lectures.
This professor forgot to teach us thing that we needed for the exams and not use his own course notes Also, you have to write handwritten notes for 10% of the grade had to do most of his course googling things that we didn't go over
A cool professor who gives reliable feedback and shows that he cares about technology through his emphatic and hilarious lectures. Assignments may be heavy in volume for some, but they are super easy to get done, around 3 assignments per week. Lectures and modules may be a little unorganized. His accent is awesome. Overall, 10/10
Lectures are him talking and drawing on a whiteboard provides no textbook for more information. Course notes have barely any info. Almost no assignments to bring grade up if you do bad on a test. No extra credit. Test are your main grade and attendance with camera on if mandatory for every class.
Great professor! I really enjoy having Professor Mark as my instructor. Very professional and easy. that being said, his class is very good he does assign class homework, but it is not difficult. Also, his lecture is very easy to understand as well, and Professor Mark is very passionate about his class. He is also very understanding.
Professor Beattie's ITE221 is a challenge, but engaging lectures and the option to use Unstuck ai for exam prep make it worthwhile. Stay on top of the material and you'll do well.
Honestly such a sweet professor. Lectures were easy to follow along and he's always asking if anyone needs help to ask during classes where we're working. Tests have respondus browser and are easy if you just look through the modules for a couple hours beforehand. Recommend him, the final was literally just a group project !
The professor teaches well using analogies and drawings, and balances lectures with breaks. However, practice tests don't show what you got wrong, and answers on exams can't be changed once submitted. Grades are based only on tests and journals (notes), with no extra credit. Installation projects are assigned with just a video for guidance.
