Hes really nice, and pretty much what he says in class is whats on his quizzes and tests, as long as you take notes. But hes kinda strict with late work, not very understanding and makes it hard to "get by" on him. But hes overall straight to the point and easy to understand.
this dude makes this class so much harder than it has to be...ridiculous amount of notes every class, quiz almost every class. Hard tests. too many assignments. not a fun class
Great guy, knows what he's talking about but the amount of notes, quizzes, and projects are ridiculous. Tests are hard-a lot of information; quizzes almost daily, strict on late work. Not as easy as the class description makes it sound.
The lectures have a lot of info but its basically straight from the text. There are weekly quizzes that test your short term memory and can sometimes be difficult. I think he is new to the subject this semester but he isn't that bad. It could be worse...then again it could be much much better.
This is way too much work for a 100 level class. If you're a senior just trying to get in that "fine art" credit, dont take this. The quizzes are hard if you can't remember the full names of the people he mentioned in his boring lecture. Also the papers are really annoying.
very nice guy..but come on dude..this is music 102..not music 402...tests are hard unless you can remember all the notes from the lectures (listening part, multiple choice and fill in the blank)...quiz at the end of each class..and they are worth 15% of your grade. stay away from this guy unless you are truly interested in the class
He is not a very Good professor. Doesn't know how to teach the class. The class is so boring! His test and quizzes are so hard. Too much work given. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS if you think music will be easy its not!!!
Easy class as long as you attend lectures and take notes. Had 5 assignments but 3 of them were to go to concerts you lke and write about it. He giaves you a check (90%) on assignments if you do even a decent job on them. Gives quizes every week so attend class. Lowest 3 quizes are dropped. Nice Guy and knows the subject.
this class is not an easy A. the tests are pretty hard to do well on, and he gives a quiz every week(to make sure you come to class. However he is really nice, and his lectures are clear and informative. If your lazy and dont wanna do any college level work dont take him. IF your interested in music I would def recommend the class.
cake walk. easy a. show up, take notes, memorize song artists and titles for the exam. i think i got a 99 in the class. take it for your fine art credit.
The class is pretty easy. Everything on the tests is in his lecture notes. There isn't much writing involved (Only 3 concert reports and two small assignments) Make sure you get the book and listening CD because the listening portion is 30 percents of the exams. His TA's are pretty helpful too and hold study sessions before the exams.
The class was great fun. Easy quizzess to verufy attendance, but you can still miss many classes. TA's held very helpful study session for tests. Really easy overall, if listening to some good music is easy for you.
This class was a lot of fun. Very interesting and very well run. There is some work you have to do out of the class but it is well worth it. The review session run by the TA will get you an A.
The class is pretty enteresting and the teacher can be entertaining sometimes. Make sure you go to class and write down the notes he puts up. If you don't you will have to end up reading the book and still not know what to focus on. You have to go to 3 concerts and write a review on each of them also.
This class is pretty ridiculous for those who just want a fine arts credit. 3 Tests, 3 counted quizzes, 3 concert reports, and 3 papers. If you're looking for an easy A...this isn't the class for you. Harder than some 300 level classes.
This course is somewhat difficult, but the music played in class is great. The class is well taught but the work done outside of class sucks.
He uses an overhead for Harris theater and expects u to see his 12 size font from the back. He stutters and mumbles a lot. He likes to give quizes when you least expect it. Even if you payed attention it's hard cuz u were squinting the whole time. Mayb you should bring binoculars. Dont forget to turn off cell. p.s. Lots of papers for this class.
Thinking U can get an easy A in this class??? Think again (unless ur really know the music played in the 1920 and couples of decades after that). He looks easy but he's not. Lots of paper for a 100 lvl class. Pop quizes r easy but he gives them out the very next class after the tests (I think he likes to do that). Hate this class!!!
He grades his papers hard.Expects us to go to 3 concerts, write 5 papers, take 5 quizes, and 4 tests. It's a lot for a 100 level class.I have a feeling he reads his comments bc his attitude changed after the last 2 comments.he didnt give a quiz after the test.Instead he acted like he was going to then laughed about it with the TA.Enuff said.
his notes are really helpful and his exams are pretty easy
I really liked this class. He puts the notes online. I would just copy them though. We listen to music the whole class. He hates when cell phones go off. Also, he gives pop quizes at the end of six classes but when you are about to have one, he will say "what did we learn today?"and he will say all the answers to the quiz right there.
This class is an easy A. He gives 5 papers, but they are all very easy and do not take long to do. His tests are really easy if you just read over the notes and the pop quizzes are freebie points. Take this class for an easy!
I love bergman! by far one of my favorite profs, here at mason. I took him two semesters ago when his class was harder than it is now. I liked it better when he didnt give notes at all only lectured and the tests werent all multiple choice. He is so helpful will go out of his way to make sure you do well. I loved him!
TAKE THIS CLASS!!! He gives a good amount assignments but you get an A if you just do them. As far as the lectures...i recommend you go to class because he gives pop quizes that are reddiculously easy if you pay attention plus, his lectures are really interesting. DONT BE FOOLED this class IS NOT an easy A you still have to study a good amount!
I thought it would be a cakewalk "A" course. It was certainly a fairly easy course but everyone in there had to work for everything they got. Attendance not mandatory but he has five pop quizzes (five points max each) and the max total you can get is 15 points (you can miss two). He posted lecture notes online. Study those and you'll do fine.
HORRIBLE! Hates having to stop in the middle of his borring lectures to answer simple questions. Has an attitude problem and he is arrogant. He keeps on using the words VISA-VI over and over again. He does grade fair though, his exams are easy if you read/study notes and book.
This professor is extremely difficult to deal with. No matter how hard you try you won't get an A in his class. He is determined to make sure that you don't!
He knows his stuff and is very approachable after class. How anyone gets less than an A in this class is beyond me.
Although this class is a no brainer, he makes it extremely difficult. Just when you think you have an A, he pulls the rug from up under your feet. Your better off taking someone else.
he sucks ! his classes are useless, all u need is his notes from his website. he's grading is pretty tough ! watch out for pop quizez,,, a lot a material to read ! don't take any class with this guy.
I couldn't imagine getting anything but an A in the class. I took it in the summer, and it was extremely easy. I never used the book. If he is really that hard in the fall or spring semesters, which I doubt, then take him in the summer. It's a cakewalk.
Great teacher ... very respectful to students.
Pretty easy class. Tends to give pop quizzes the day after tests so make sure to go to those classes. Other than that, notes are online. Go to the reviews and tests are pretty simple. Overall, he's a nice guy who is willing to help his students.
Extremely hard grader determined not to give you an A, arrogant for a nuclear physicist, much less a music prof, petty and nasty in dealing w/ students, and god help you if you have a personal problem...even a death in the family isn't enough to turn a paper in late (no joke!)
Nice guy, fun class, listen to music most of class. Tests are pretty hard, got to listen to the music on the CDs for the test. Good way to get an easy fine arts requirement.
He's real easy. I didn't go to class, and I just downloaded the notes from the site, and I got a 94 on the most recent exam. It will affect your grade if you don't go though, since he gives pop quizes as a way of monitoring attendance. And these quizzes aren't hard, but you gotta know some basics, you can't just show up at the end.
The class was very interesting and enjoyable. Prof. Bergman was a very good teacher and lecturer. As long as you listen to the assigned music and print the notes from the website you will pass. He gives the easiest pop quizzes, so come to class. It's an easy A.
Not very helpful, probably because its a huge class. Gets much more interesting/easy at the end when its more current music. sometimes a little rude or arrogant, so if you get offended dont take him. all notes on internet, but there are pop quizzes.
LOVED the music class!!! I liked the material, the tests are embarrassingly easy, he drops the 3 lowest quiz grades, and if you take notes, it is an easy A.
Decent class. The first 2/3 of the semester is boring and the tests are hard, but the more current music is fun and the test is easy. He is very cocky and full of himself, thinks of himself more than he should. He is disrespectful to students and other staff, so don't expect to be the class favorite. Does have some sense of humor.
The first half is pretty difficult and the exams are challenging, but the second half is really fun. We got to see Michael Jackson videos for one class...yeah, you know you love MJ too! Bergman is not arrogant at all, he just doesn't appreciate it when students have side conversations during his lectures, and who can blame him?
This class was a waste of money. It should be called Music HIstory and not popular music. The only time the music got even a little interesting was when we hit Michael Jackson. His grading policy and standards are completely random. If you follow the requirements on the syllabus dont expect the grade to reflect it. I would NEVER RECOMEND THIS CLASS
Easy A. As long as you turn in the assignments on time and do the class listening, you will pass. Class is interesting toward the end of the semester when he talks about more recent music. Good fine arts class.
His class at the beginning is extremely boring; however, it does get better towards the last half where you cover more modern music. Pretty good teacher that's definitely willing to help as long as you're willing to help yourself. Exams can be difficult, however, the assignments are pretty easy.
He's a very nice teacher and wants you to do good. the material isnt very intersting at the beginning but it wasnt too bad. i retained quite a bit of infor after the class. attend class for the pop quizzes...very simple. do the assignments and Attend the study sessions and you will do just fine.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He was very knowledgeable, energetic, enthusiastic, well-prepared, and wanted his students to succeed.
best class to surf the internet!!!!!
Class sucked in the beginning because we were going over music that was never listened to, but as the class progressed it got better. Tests are easy, 3 concert reports are easy, and the 5 random quizzes he gives (to make sure you show up for class) are really easy.
Pick this class if you need facebook surfing time during school and some credits while you're at it. Bergman should become a singer.
Professor Bergman could be totally corny, but he was still fun. He managed to make some really dull music types interesting. I would definitely take another class from him.
Too much works for a fine art class. Tests are not easy at all!
His Popular Music class is fun and informative. We listened to Led Zeplin the first day of class! He is unbiased about the music he discusses and makes sure to highlight the importance of all musical genres. He even hosts review sessions for the tests the day before. As long as you study a little bit and show up to class you will pass.
He can be a little annoying when he tries to do group activities in a large lecture but overall he's a nice guy and wants to teach you about music. The class gets easier and more interesting as it progresses. Mainly, go to the review sessions that the TA's provide, at least our TA's basically gave us all the answers for the tests.
I don't have an extreme passion for music so maybe that's why I really enjoyed this class. Going to class is not mandatory at all as long as you go to the review sessions the TA's hold. They give you the answers! 5 discussions on blackboard, not hard at all, and 3 class "projects" and they are easy as well. Easy gen ed!
His class is very easy and can be fun until he starts to ramble. A few very small, easy assignments. You really only have to come to classes on exam days or to turn in assignments. Otherwise, just skim the book and go over his notes. I put very little effort into the class and got an A. Definitely recommend him for a fine arts credit!
This professor is awesome. Great teacher.
Professor Bergman was fabulousss. He got me excited every class i attended and my eyes never left him. His class is easy, and his style is magnificent and flamboyant. Mr. Slave, his assistant, is a great TA as well, and changes the song right on command. Definitely take this class if you want an A.
The only reason i took this class was because of gen eds, it fulfilled the requirement for fine arts. But in the end, i learned a lot from this professor. Its kinda hard not to learn, when you have a professor like him, who is so passionate about what he teaches. The projects are simpleshort, there are three tests and a final. Attend the reviews
This class was both enjoyable and an EASY A. I wish I went to more class, as I ended up skipping around 60% of the time, but even so I got an A. All you need is to go to the review sessions, i promise, but I do suggest you go to class, because it is very fun, I mean you listen to music, lets be real...
Take him and his popular music in america class! easy A! you never have to go to class literally except when there are those mini proj dues which he collects at the end of class. those just take like 10 mins to do. other than that just go to the review sessions for the tests. the ta will LITERALLY give you the answers to the test
Prof Bergman is invested in his craft and in his students. He is a fair teacher and tries his best to make the class fun even when he has to cover some sem-boring material. I highly recommend this professor.
Prof Bergman is invested in his craft and in his students. He is a fair teacher and tries his best to make the class fun even when he has to cover some semi-boring material. I highly recommend this professor.
Nice teacher, funny guy. Just study the powerpoints and go to the review sections and do the online homework he gives you. EASY A!
He is a pretty good professor and you can tell he really knows music and is passionate about it. Class can be a little boring at times, but he does his best to keep everyone into it. He puts the notes online and that's all you really need to do well on the tests. Easy A for sure if you put in minimal effort
Definitely recommend this class for your fine arts requirement! Three tests and a final, 5 online homework discussion assignments, and 3 in class "projects." The tests can be a little tricky if you haven't studied...but still can do well. Piece of cake. Easy A for sure. Better than taking art history right? :P
So umm, I only went to class when we had a test (which was only like 3) and I got an A. Now you tell me how easy this class sounds?
Huge class size makes it hard for him to teach the material in a fun way. Pretty boring course (though it sounds exciting) but it is very easy. He is a nice guy and will help you if needed though. Try something else if you are looking for a challenge. Not a bad teacher, the class size is just daunting.
Try to read your notes carefully before the tests and your will be fine other then that there is no need to come to class. This is probably the class I least worried about, but it is very very boring though.
Great teacher! I actually enjoyed coming to class. While it is helpful to have some sort of prior knowledge on the music discussed in class, Professor Bergman is very informative. His TA even has informational sessions prior to tests. The group projects were annoying, not due to relevance, but because peers are often incompetent in large classes.
Bergman has a sense of humor & is passionate about his class. However, he is TERRIBLE about clarifying deadlines & expectations. He appreciates involvement & encourages discussion. Don't forget your iClicker!! He uses these for a participation grade. Any type of assessment is easy if you paid attention in class and took notes on what he SAYS.
I regret never going to this class because you actually learn a lot of interesting material. You listen to music/watch videos. The class is huge, but it's fun. 3 tests, final, 2 group projects (extremely easy), 2 class projects (i wouldn't even consider it a project),5 black board posts..he does have pop quizes but its barely worth any points.
Mark is a quirky guy but is rather entertaining. Easy class. Do not really need the text books. His tests come directly from the notes he puts online. Aslong as you do the stuff it should be an easy A. Lectures can be somewhat dry but they get progressively better.
I thought this class was a lot of fun. Yeah, you gotta do some work and pay attention to deadlines. Huge class size, but worth taking for a gen ed credit.
One of the better classes I've taken at Mason. Bergman is enthusiastic and you get to listen to a lot of music. He likes it when you participate in class. Tests are pretty reasonable. Pay attention to deadlines - he wont take late work
Great teacher that knows his stuff. Our class had almost 200 students but he put a lot of effort to make the class interesting (group projects and class discussions) instead of just doing straight lectures everyday. You listen to a lot of music in class which he uses to help you practice and immerse yourself in the music. Would recommend!
One of the better Prof at GMU. Take him to boost your GPA with an easy A :)
He isn't all that helpful. He is an available for office hours because his office hours are at the Prince Williams campus which can make things quite difficult and he also relies heavily on the textbook and listening to the topics in class. His projects in the homework are really pretty easy but make sure you study for the test because they can be quite difficult. He isn't a bad teacher in that he has a passion for the topic, he just needs to be available more and not rely on the TA so much.
I love Professor Bergman's class! The tests are easy and the class is fun. You can tell he genuinely cares about the students. Go to the TA's study sessions because what she talks about will be covered on the test! Class isn't mandatory but iClicker quizzes happen most weeks, but the questions are super easy. The textbook isn't really needed.
Fun class. Need an iclicker for quizzes. Group projects and several written blackboard discussions. 4 exams. Don't need the books
Great class, he tries to keep it interesting and really knows what he's talking about. IClicker quizzes in class are easy but are everyday and used for attendance and are graded, all notes are online PRINT THEM OUT. You dont need the book if you print the notes. Group work is graded heavily and assignments online are really important.
He know his stuff! He is very passionate in the topic he teachers, and he tries to get everyone in class involved especially with class assignments. He loves discussions and keeps everyone interested. HIs tests are quite easy if you pay attention in class and go to the test review because the TA gives hints on what exactly will be on the test.
Professor was arrogant, class was not exciting at all. The lectures were mandatory because of all the homeworks, quizzes, and group projects due. If you're taking this for an easy elective, I do not recommend it.
Fun class. Requirements are clear, and Professor Bergman is passionate about music. How anyone gets anything other than an A is beyond me.
Best class I have taken at Mason so far!
Pretty easy class. Bergman is an OK guy - gives a lot of iclicker quizzes.
PRETTY EASY! You wont need to do any critical thinking in tests, nor memorize small details! Just study the things that he mentions continually in class and his lecture notes on Blackboard. Not reading the textbook would still get u an A. Attending is recommended to follow up with his notes. 3 quizzes +final + 4 short assig. + 5 short discussion Qs
This class is not as easy as people made it seem to be. especially if you are taking a lot of classes. However Bergman is one of the best professor at George Mason. He is quick to response to his students, he is clear with his expectation and requires respect(attentiveness etc).Your grade reflects the amount of work you put in. I recommend!!!
I went into this class expecting it to be an easy A however that definitely was not the case for me. The tests are not bad but do require reading/studying, the lectures aren't interesting but his passion for music is seen through his teaching, other minor assignments which are easy. But I DEFIANTLY had to put a lot more effort that expected.
Don't take his class if you have no interest in music. A lot of work is required to get an A for this class.
This is a good class if you want to learn about music. This is not an easy A, though. You have to do the work and study for the tests (3 tests + final). It is just like another class. Bergman is a nice guy and loves Music. The class is too big for him and the TA making everything disorganized. I wasted $100 on the textbook that I barely used
The professor is very nice and passionate. However, this is not an easy A class, if you are not interested in Music. 3 exams, 1 final(cumulative), 5 discussion questions, 2 group projects, 4 class assignments. Also, no study guides or test reviews.
He does not respect his students at all. He uses iclickers as an attendance policy. If you're late, he pulls a clicker quiz at class start on the dot. So you fail. If he sees people get up to use the restroom. He pulls another quiz. Leave early? another quiz. not every class though. lots of excess info given in lecture. lots of memorization.
Class was harder than I thought it would be but I learned a lot. Not an easy A. Definitely worth taking though.
Bergman is enthusiastic and a good teacher. Tests are hard assignments are easy.
Professor Bergman was great and class was very fun to go to. Tests were very easy if you read the textbook and class was only mandatory because of iclicker quizzes, but they aren't worth a lot of points so missing a couple doesn't hurt. There are a lot of easy A assignments that help out your grade.
Best class I have taken at Mason so far - Too bad it is such a large class. Still, I know a lot more about music then I did.
His lecture is pretty boring, but you basically have to go because of his iclicker things. His test are easy and so are his assignments so you should be fine in the class if you study his powerpoints. Also DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS I NEVER USED MINE ONCE. Just look over his powerpoints!!!
Not a hard class at all, but necessarily an easy A. He gives iclickers at random times each class, so even though he posts all his power points on blackboard, still attend class by all means! Very passionate about his teaching and loves to encourage others to get involved in discussions, and praises you for getting answers correct in class!!
Don't buy the textbook, go to class (iclicker quizzes) and meet deadlines and you will get an A. He's not a nice guy and his lectures are pretty boring. I guess this class is good to fill that arts requirement but I didn't enjoy him or his class at all.
There are a lot to take notes in class. It isn't an easy A but at least the material is somewhat interesting. Although attendance isn't mandatory, there are many iclicker quizzes every class so you kind of need to be there for them.
Good class. Have to show up for iclicker quizzes. Would be better as a smaller class.
He made a potentially very interesting class pretty dull. There was a lot of work for the sake of doing work. My main issue was that all of his test questions were all extremely specific ("who DIDN'T made an album in 1917?", "who wrote this song"), instead of focusing on the more interesting big picture. Also just an irritating person in general.
Bergman is a good teacher, but the class is too big. The class discussions were interesting. Group work, not so much.
