Dont take! he's a nice guy & he is funny but all he talks about is himself, his wife & his dog. You're lucky if he takes 15 min to talk about physics. It's frustrating to have to sit down for 1hr and 30min to listen to this guy. Half the class dropped before the 1st test. If you value physics learn it from someone else.
This guy is so annoying! spends the whole class talking about how much of a genius he is and clearly lies about it, if he was such a physics genius he'd actually talk about physics in class. U will learn nothing from this guy, seriously if you need to know physics take someone else every class feels like a waste of time. you may as well stay home
well. if you need physics in the future, do not not not choice him, I just can say so bad
Talks too much about himself; teaches too little about Physics. During an average class, you get around 15-20 minutes worth Physics and around 1 hr 10 minutes hearing about his life & opinions. Exams are super easy but you don't learn the material until AFTER his exams; it's weird. Nice guy, would hang out with him; will not take his class again
Worst teacher ever! He doesnt teach also when you ask him a question he always gets off topic and starts to talk about his so perfect life
Easy class and exams. If you need physics for pre-med, don't take him. You learn the bare minimum about physics. It's disappointing to see what I learned in this class vs. what I should have learned. Talks too much about his life and political opinions. And if you ask him a physics question, he will find a way to connect it to something unrelated.
Worst teacher stay away or watch your money go to waste
His exams are really easy just review your homework and notes and you are guaranteed to get an A in the class. He does talk about his life a lot, but it's not that bad.
Only talks about himself & wont cover the material, his class is easy but if you have to learn the material then please don't take him, why would you pay someone just to talk about himself for 1 hour & 30 min? if you're a science major or an engineering major you will be affected if you take him, bcuz you gotta know basic physics! & he wont teach
I'm not sure why he is getting bad ratings... I took him during the summer and the class averages on each exam were above 80's...
I don't know why he has bad reviews. It was nice he will talk about other topics or personal life it was a good icebreaker. Students complaining about his off topic conversation will whine if the professor talks and drill nothing but problems/formulas too. Take him if you have any basics on Physics if you don't. You might struggle during his class
Professor Bouwens gives interesting lectures and is always in a good mood. The homework is done from the textbook, and tests are based on the homework problems. My only issue with this class is that I wish we went into more depth and difficulty on the material, but this is my major so I am biased.
4 tests, final will be based from all 4 prior tests. He will let you know about what would be on his test. My advise to you will be search and practice all problems available on Chegg or internet to prepare for your exam. If your plan is to cheat and hoping to go by on his class, he is not the one. He is to smart for you to cheat on his class.
Took online during winter break. A lot of work b/c of two week time span but overall easy. He is amazing-includes all info you need to pass and makes it easy to navigate through assignments. I barely used the textbook, all the info. for hw/quizzes/tests (print these out he repeats a lot of questions for exams) were from his power point slides.
I just have 1 simple thing to say, that is: take him He might talk a lot but he will make your life easier to breath when you're having too many hw with other classes. Wanna graduate soon with 100% pass grade? TAKE HIM
Dr. Bouwens is great at teaching. His lectures are never boring and he has a good personality also.
Professor Bouwens is down to earth and understands we are there to learn. He doesnt make it hard, in fact he always tries to make what we are learning a lot easier! Do your homework and youll do well on exams. He is very open to questions. Professor Bouwen is BRILLIANT!
Professor Bouwens class is the easiest physics 2 class ever. Doesn't give too much homework compared to the other profs. His tests are from the homework problems and the final is from the 4 tests. Simple.
Brilliant. Fair. The greatest.
He is great with wonderful explaining skill.
Dr. Bouwens has great explanation skills. i would recommend him .
He is a great professor , I would definitely take him again.
One of my favorite professors, very funny. Started Kinematics by talking about him falling/breaking his ribs, finishing by asking us to calculate how long it took to hit the ground. Homework is a completion grade, but only counts as 10%. Final is basically just a review of the other tests, so STUDY THEM. Can get political, but would recommend 100%.
Really great teacher, does very well at simplifying the problems and formulas. Homework is veerry similar to the tests. Is not difficult professor just pay attention and take notes. I wish I could've taken him for physics 2. He also has a lot to say about the universe in general so listen up. Ask questions otherwise he expects you to understand.
If you believe in climate change and global warming its best to keep your opinions to yourself or you will be shut out so quickly. Amazing class but dont dare to try and go against profs beliefs or you will be belittled since we are only students and he is a scientist lol. Good luck.
he is great!
Dr. Bouwens is a caring professor which is rare at HCC. You will do fine on his test if you do and understand the homework, doesn't take of points for petty things.
Professor Bouwens is a great professor. Gives great advice, amazing lectures, and answers questions when needed. There alot of homework but it will help get you ready for the exam. There are 4 exams, a final, and the homework. Not a difficult class as long as you come to class, do the homework, and practice/study for exams.
He is an amazing professor. If you do your assignments well and study both the assignments and examples given in class, you should be able to pass his class easily.
Dr. Bouwens is a A rated professor! Will not find a lot of lecturers like him. No quiz but weekly homework that aren't difficult and will be reviewed as a class. 4 tests and 1 final. Tests are open ended but are exactly from the homework. Final is super comprehensive and the same from the test! Just show up and listen and you will understand physic
Great professor. As long as you attend class, labs, and study your reviews you should be able to pass the course. Do not need to purchase textbook in my opinion.
Mark R. Bouwens is a good professor. He tries to make physics as simple as possible. It is good for those students that want basic knowledge of physics, but it is not good for those students who have physics and engineering majors and looking for profound understanding of physics.
Professor Bouwen's is a great! His sense of humor definitely helps in a 3hr afternoon course to not fall asleep. He is laid back and knows what his talking about. He makes lectures fun and when it comes to test he always reviews on what you will be tested on . The book was not mandatory. Overall take him!
He knows his stuff but more importantly knows how to teach it so you understand. His tests are straightforward since he bases them off the HW he gives. Do the HW and you should be fine on the tests. I'd recommend him forsure, I wanted to take him for physics 2 as well but unfortunately he isn't teaching it next semester.
I don't know why he can get some negative reviews. Maybe those students are just lazy to follow him. He teaches clearly and easy to understand. Homework can be more difficult than the tests but it will help you to learn. He's also an inspirational professor, he will tell you jokes and other socially stuffs but there are all good things to hear.
Dr. Bouwens, is one of the best professors I've ever take. Tests are exactly like the HW, he goes over the HW during lecture. Provides all the formulas, nothing is memorization. In other words do the HW (one packet per chapter) and you will pass with an A.
Best professor I have had in a science course yet. He not only knows the material, but knows how to explain it to people who do not. My only complaint, is he won't be teaching physics 2 in spring 2020. Do the homework, and study regularly; you will ace this course that way. If you have the chance, take professor Bouwens.
This was a prerequisite for the sonography program i'm trying to get into. I wouldn't say this class is an easy A, but its really not hard to pass this class. Just make sure you go to class and understand what he taught (which is also not hard). He's a bit loquacious ... but overall, simple.
Dr. Bouwens makes his lectures fun and explains each topic clearly. There are 4 exams, a final, and 10 homework assignments that consist of 10-23 questions. The tests are very similar to the homework assignments, and provides the formulas needed.
Dr. Bouwens class if fun and relaxed. If you do your part it is easy to make an A. He always asks his students if they need help. The course is very organized and not overwhelming. Physics is not my best subject however he explained each topic in a way that is easy to understand.
He is very nice professor with his caring and respectful. the lecture is easy and he will explain anything you do not understand, easy talk and fun in class. you should take him. GOOD PROFESSOR.
Really love professor Bouwen, his lectures are fantastic and he is very clear on what he expected for his tests. He gave a homework sheet for each of the chapters learned in class, each has about 15 questions. What is on the homework WILL be on the test. He also gives the formulas, so no need to remember that as well. Overall a great professor.
Dr. Bouwens was very straight to the point and thorough about each subject that he lectured. He gave us plenty of time to complete our homework which also served as our test review. Which gave us more than enough time to actually grasp an understanding of all the material. I really wish he was teaching Physics 2!
I took his University Physics 1 class. I would say that it was great! He is a great professor who is very knowledgeable in physics. He talks a lot about his personal life tho, like a lot. (understanding trump, climate change isn't real, his garden, his family...)
Good teacher, fair on the test. Review your homework and you will be fine. All 4 test is base on hw. Final will be comprehensive from 4 previous tests.
Homework is your lifesaver in this class. Understand the homework and you will understand the class for sure. 4 exams plus the final and a bunch of homework, that is all for this class.
Good teacher, he is upfront with everyone not at all stressed and is likable be an adult show up to class then you will pass read the slides overall great professor very funny.
His tests are easy. You just need to go to class, take notes carefully and do homework. You will have easy A
Professor Bouwens is a straight forward guy. Everything that you need to know is on his power-points, his reviews are same as the test so DON'T MISS THAT DAY. Take him , he might talk a lot but he seriously tells you exactly whats going to be in the test or what to study, and his class is really fun! TAKE HIM!
He goes of topic a lot.
Super awesome professor, sucks he doesnt teach past uni physics 1, hes really good at teaching the concepts, his homeworks are pretty much the test so if you do those and understand them youll do well, he even goes over the homework questions before the test, does go on tangents, also dont try to get on his bad side, but get him if possible
I would strongly recommend y'all to take Prof. Bouwens class. If you do your work, you would get A easily.
Easy class, good professor
Definitely would take this professor again! You have to be willing to put in some effort into this class for you to consider this an "easy A."
By far one of my favorite professors I've ever had!! I took Solar Systems this semester and I struggle in any kind of science and it was great! Professor Bouwens makes the class very enjoyable and easy to manage! Super fun and interactive class! highly recommend taking this course or any other course he teaches!
I took him for 2 classes online and I have to say it's an easy A. If you were to put in the time you could probably finish this class within a month. I rented the book both times and I did not use it either time so I say don't waste your money. Most answers you will find on his Powerpoints. Put all hw and tests on a word doc then use ctrl F. yw.
He is a great professor. He goes off topic alot. Me made physics easy!!! I got an A
Allows you to work ahead. The study material he provides covers all exams. I was done with the class within the first two-three weeks of it starting. I learned a lot of information and it was over all an easy and fun class. I am definitely taking him again!
I took his class in the spring. Lots of exercises are assigned each week. His temperament is very troublesome, so you should not provoke him if you take his class. He spends a lot of time explaining his homework, but the questions on the test are completely irrelevant. I totally discourage you from taking his class.
Easy show up and pass the class.
BEWARE! All these positive reviews are from Bouwen himself, they are oddly specific about how great he is (he talks like this in class) and there are multiple reviews on the same days, students only rate prof. at the end of the sem. after they actually took the class and have actual opinions. truth is, this guy is a terrible instructor. avoid
This guy has a really bad attitude and tells you stories about how "exceptionally gifted" he is. when in reality, physics is the last thing in his mind, if he was such a great physicist then why is he stuck at community college without any research experience or publications? this guy is a fraud
About 2-3 hw before each exam. 4 exams and a final. Though the man is quite cocky and loves to go off topic to talk about his daughter, he will prepare you for his class and the exams. He initially comes off as a rude, inconsiderate man, but he is actually understanding and caring. You just need to talk to him if you are having any issues.
Don't waste your time if you're going to take him online. the lectures are not helpful and he always talks about his daughter more than physics. Oh, also he should keep his political opinions to himself.
Took his Physics 1 class during the summer. Honestly, just do the homeworks and understand them. Make a study group, and show up to lecture. His homeworks are harder than the exams. Sometimes, he goes off topic and talks about his daughter but other than that his lectures are helpful. Also, you don't need to get the textbook it's a waste of money.
Everyone complaining about him getting off topic has a stick up theirs. Bouwens is a nice man who knows what he's talking about. Does he get off topic from physics? Yes, but he will never leave you unprepared for his exams. His class is only exams & hw. If you can do the hw well, you can pass the exam. The man is wise & shares inspirational words.
I took Bouwens twice, online & in person. I sincerely enjoyed his class both times. The way he structures his course is easily manageable. Honestly, your grade is only a reflection of ur effort in his classes bc as long as you pay attention & do the work, you cannot be left unprepared. & the work isn't even grisly. Great man. Funny & inspirational.
Took him around a year ago for physics II. I believe he is the best professor/teacher I have ever had. Very inspiring guy. He wants you to succeed, and it's reflected in his lectures. Although he goes on rants, they are great rants. He will also chat with you after class about random stuff if you want, just approach him and ask him stuff.
So thankful for taking elementary physics with Professor Bouwens at LSC! He gives good lectures (does go off topic and ramble), but he's funny and helps make the class as easy as he can. I really appreciated that he would go over and review with us for our tests. I was very intimidated by this class at first, but ended up really enjoying it!
Dr. Mark R. Bouwens is a great Professor, he engages the class does not give a lot of homework and his exams are not hard. He loves to talk about random things, but its interesting. Attendance is mandatory and if you are online camera must be on.
Took this class face to face. Best Professor I ever had, he is funny, understanding and assist you in Hw. Exam is super easy.
Professor Bouwens is one of the best professors I've had so far. His assignments are easy. Just make sure you turn everything in on time.
One of the easier professors, that I have taken. You all should take him. He responds fast to emails too. The way he structures his class on canvas is straightforward to navigate.
The class itself was ok, had to go through the modules and do everything on time. He clearly states never to email him until reading everything. have to stay on top of homework, labs, and test. Lots of textbook and slides to read.
One of the best professors at HCC, I had Dr.Mark R. Bouwens, for ASTR 1403 with lab so the class was 4 credits in one. Best decision ever! Made an A+, the easiest class ever, the exams, labs, and quizzes are easy and none require a lockdown browser. All the assignments are open so you can work ahead, just don't miss a deadline!
exams were easy doesn't give out a lot of homework just attend class and you will need your camera on if you're taking him online.
Couldn't tell if this was a lecture or his bi-weekly therapy session. Goes on long unrelated tangents and is somewhat political; definitely not a safe space for everyone. Overall, Easy A if you do the homework and don't mind wasting some time listening to his conspiracy theories about climate change. Gives partial credit but no extra credit.
Best physics professor you can take. Homework was a bit challenging sometimes but it prepared you very well for the test. The test usually covered 2 chapters with 10 questions for each chapter. The first few questions were very easy and they got progressively harder. He also gave good hints on what to expect on the test. Had amazing anecdotes.
I took the online anytime ASTR 1303 and it was a very simple course. The work can be done at your own pace, but there are still due dates. The homework quizzes are only 10 questions and the exams are at the end of each module. PPT's and the textbook are the resources used to help with the work. Syllabus quiz is MANDATORY, don't miss it and pass it!
Students, please take this Professor. Lots of comments complain regarding his talks of his personal life but tbh its a way to take mental breaks and learn the next concepts. He does not go off the book and will lay out what u need to know straight forward. 11 homework's thought the semester, 3-4 exams & 1 final. Exams are like HW! Best Professor!!!
Professor Bouwens is one of the BEST professors I have ever had at HCC. He is super understanding and has amazing lectures. Attendance is not mandatory but I would not recommend skipping class. He goes over the material in great detail and helps if you ask.
The way the class is set up makes it very manageable and easy to complete. All there is are quizzes over the power points/textbook provided and a chapter test at the end of every module. Would definitely recommend this professor.
The way the class is set up makes it very manageable and easy to complete. All there is are quizzes over the power points/textbook provided and a chapter test at the end of every module. Would definitely recommend this professor. I'm actually taking him again for another class and I'm excited to do so bc he is AWESOME
Dr. Bouwens is an amazing physics 1 professor that everyone should take. He does assign homework often but if you do the homework at least onceover, you will be prepared for all 4 of his tests for he bases the test questions off of the homework questions. When there is time to pass, he will tell you about his life stories.
Class was pretty easy, but the frequent off topic rants (particularly the political ones) were extremely annoying (and I usually enjoy teachers who get off topic). His elaborate climate change conspiracy affirmed for me that he shouldn't be allowed to teach a science class. He's getting paid to miseducate ppl about climate science, which is absurd.
Amazing Professor, I wish he was teaching PHYS 2326 would have LOVED to take him. Amazing and clear lectures. Was always willing to stay a little longer after class if you had any questions. I would really recommend taking his class.
very clear-cut, homework took like 2 hours max week, easy assignments, 10/10 would take again. Took a 5-week Course as well.
I would recommend Dr. Bouwens to anyone taking University Physics 2 over the summer. He makes his grading criteria clear and makes it clear what will be on the tests as well. This was an online 5-week course, so there was a lot of homework, but the material helps with preparing for the test. He is a bit harsh with his test conditions as its online
It's nearly the end of the semester and he hasn't graded a single thing yet-nobody in the class knows how they stand. His tests are absolutely nothing like the homework and he doesn't give reviews. The climate change denial rants are frequent. Said he wouldn't grade attendance on his syllabus but ironically that's the only grade right now.
When presenting unfamiliar equations to my Math 1316 Trigonometry professor, he says, "You should have learned this in Algebra or Geometry." When I ask for help in his class he says, "The help is in the homework," which adds to the stress.
With all due respect,Dr.MarkBouwens knows what heis doing through the class, but leaves you lost in dust, as he does not really explain anything he is doing but do the book work for us and then expects us to come in and ace his test.If we don't we're rewarded with his nice exploits about how we should go home and how we look horrible every morning!
Took Unv. Phy with Dr. Bouwens. He does tent to get off topic but most courses at this point are self taught anyways. His HW was very straight forward and exams similar to the HW. Easiest final exam I ever taken. Basically questions from previous exams. 100% recommend Bouwens for Physics. Allowed test corrections for first exam and dropped lowest.
Easiest class I've have ever taken and I'd recommend, to anyone taking ASTR1304. Easily the best at HCC, he has very clear grading just do everything early or on time and you will be fine esp. for the tests which are similar to quizzes it isn't overwhelming and no proctoring just quizzes and test on canvas. Which are similar to the Slides.!
Goes on rants for 1/2 of class meanwhile, his explanations of topics is lackluster. His rants are either political or about his daughter. The only help for the exams is homework & reading the textbook. No lecture slides. Nobody cares about politics or your daughter, we want more time spent asking us questions and explaining the topic at hand.......
Worst professor I've ever had. Wastes so much class time on conspiracy theories and personal anecdotes. Takes most of the semester to grade anything. We were very behind on the material by the end of the semester. He is very full of himself. Feels like a waste of tuition money. His tests are easy, so if you can ignore his personality, its an easy A
Pretty easy course and professor over online anytime. Most material is taught via PowerPoints for each unit. PPTX's covers everything you need but are somewhat long. Grade comes from homeworks for each module and 4 exams plus a final. Doesn't take too much time; at your own pace (very few deadlines), and stressfree. Would definitely take again.
The reviews about him going off topic is true but ultimately, I didn't pay attention previously in Physics 1 and with Dr. Bouwens I was able to pass with flying colors. Yes his tangents are a little long but just go on your phone or something. The tests were pretty much the homeworks, the final was just the 3 tests we took in class.
Yes tangents were long but just allowed me to relax a bit during class. Homeworks made up the test, the 3 test made up the final. Attendence was whenever you wanted to come. Drops one of the 3 tests. I didnt pay attention in Physics 1 but I passed Physics 2 with flying colors.
Extremely political and ego heavy. Most classes he talks 1/2 or more of the class. Class structure isn't bad, easy tests if you understand homework.
He spends majority of the class time rambling about unimportant things that are not pertaining to physics, but his class is fairly easy to pass if you do the homework and listen to him when he's actually talking about physics.
Zero class discussions. Zero projects. Zero feedback. The entire class was obviously cheating. Sad to see what education's become for some people. Mark probably shouldn't be teaching if he's going to treat his class like a MOOC with zero oversight. Insanely disappointed, don't take unless you want to be isolated all semester. This is NOT college!!!
he absolutely loves hearing his own voice, no one is lying about him rambling about unrelated topics (which were often inappropriate, even going as far as to argue with a student during a lecture). it is not a hard course and he is very easygoing though, as long as you pay attention during lectures and actually do the homework you can perform well.
