I had Mark Brown for an essay writing course. It was a complete waste of time. I didn't learn anything. We read essays, but instead of discussing why they were good or bad essays, or how to write a good essay, all we did was debate over the content of each essay. It was a big waste.

If you go to class, you'll pass. If you read the book, you'll pass. Textbook is well detailed so you could probably pass from just reading book. Going to class ensures you know which sections are being taught as he skips some parts of the book. Breaks down a midterm and final to pretty much give it to you on a silver platter as others have said.

This prof is fairly ineffective. Mark Brown needs to learn that teaching requires actually explaining concepts to students. Mark is a terrible professor. He made me hate everything about this class. He does not explain concepts in the least; he merely reiterates them and assumes that all students understand. The class was not that interesting but his exam and tests were straight forward, he tells you what you need to know and doesn't deviate from that! Reading the chapter before coming to class helped a lot but he explained the topic very well so you could still get a perfect understanding without reading! Book was a little bit of a pain to buy though!
