This likable Prof was a really good teacher. He made sure the concepts were UNDERSTOOD by the student rather than memorized. Although his grading is REALLY strict and his test are REALLY hard.. most students didn't finish.. by the end of the semester there were 8 students left and sadly I received a "C" when I typically get A's
Great.
Great prof! Be prepared to work as he is tough. On the bright side I was prepared for calculus at UT.
Very good but very tough. Be ready to work and to think on your own. If you are willing to really try, you will learn.
Great professor! He really wants you to develop a true comprehension of the material, rather than just memorize the procedures. Just do not go into his class expecting an easy A: he is very strict about grading, and you will not do well in his class if you do not work hard and really put effort into understanding the topic.
I had him for Calc 1. It wasn't my first time taking it, but with his help, I finally understood it. He makes you work in groups everyday, which is a huge help. He's not an easy teacher, but he's a really nice guy and just wants everyone to do well in his class. He's great at explaining & doing examples. Absolutely recommend taking him for Calc!
One of the hardest teachers I have ever had, but by far one of the best. If you are not serious about learning and do not take going to class and doing homework seriously, he is not the teacher for you. However, if you love a challenge and truly want to come away from the class with a deep understanding of the concepts, this is the teacher for you!
Calc 2 with Burtch was the toughest class I have taken in all my college career, yet the most rewarding. I went in office hours twice a week and he was 95% available. Come to every class so you don't get behind. Ask questions when you don't understand. I was shooting for an A, and worked my butt off and got it by the hair of my chin.
Often times condescending toward students. Cannot break concepts down to help explain to students more clearly. Excessively has things appear on test that were not discussed in class.
I haven't had the chance to personally thank Mark for his Calc II class I took in Spring 2012. Being 10 years removed from school his strict approach to conceptual understanding and grading really forced me in the right mindset for the rigors of UT. Take his Calc classes if you're looking for the same. And thanks, Mark!
this is my first semester at ACC and I am leaving with not much confidence for math because of him. He is HARSH, and very STRICT. I am not saying that is a bad thing but he does not explain concepts, he makes everything confusing, I am literally relying off of what I learned in Algebra 2 in High school. Do not take him for elementary algebra.
Great professor! He genuinely cares about the students who show interest in his class. If you're not prepared to work hard and ask questions then you will not do well. Word of advice: Go to his office hours!
This class is very hard, and professor Burtch assigns a lot of homework which is very time consuming. In the end though, the hard work is worth it because you will learn a ton and if you work hard on your homework, you will perform well on the tests.
Not a bad teacher, but his grading sucks. I never received full credit for homework, even after checking it for hours before turning it in. Expect to write and explain in words every answer on tests, even if the question does not explicitly state to do so. Read the book, know the material and study hard if you expect to pull an A in the class.
Doesn't explain the material well. He usually centered his attention toward a specific group of students (mainly females). Homework load was INSANE!! If you missed an assignment you were screwed no do overs what so ever. The test did not go over the practice material. He would get off topic ALOT! Wish you luck with his class, its sink or swim!!!!
Terrible teacher, he's extremely rude, not clear at all. He confuses himself. The work load is unbearable. Such a hard greater! If you can, do not take his class. Not worth it.
Burtch is an excellent professor. He is knowledgeable on the subject and can clearly be understood. Homework will be the toughest part of this class. Arguably, test days will be the best days of the semester since homework isn't assigned that day. Homework takes LONG, and he grades tough on homework. Each is out of ten points, and 7.5 is average
If you have a hard time with math I do not recommend this teacher. I learned more from my math lab than I did this teacher. There is online home work about every night and a online quiz twice a week. If you miss a homework you can't take the quiz. Tough grader on test. Attendance is import because there pop quizes and if you miss you fall behind
Worst professor I have ever had. Rude and completely useless in office hours. Wanted to drop the class the whole time because of the course load. Can't explain what he is trying to teach at all. If you're looking for an easy math class this is NOT it.
If you take Burtch for differential equations, prepare to work hard. Attendance isn't mandatory technically, but there's no way you'll do well in this class without going. He likes to use hand outs for homework. Also--and this is key--BUY THE RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOK. Not the required text. He works out of the recommended one.
Hardest class I have ever taken. Never studied harder in my life or put more time in doing homework/ studying for tests and still did not pass. His way of teaching is very strict and though he will try to be helpful he is not sympathetic whatsoever in grading. Never goes over homework or tests in class. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
The worse math class I've ever had! Instructor isn't responsive when you have questions or concerns. He doesn't teach in class and expects you teach yourself online or through group interaction in the after hours of class/through web videos.
Initially I thought he was a great professor but now that I'm retaking the class (because it didn't transfer) I realize that he wasn't that great, he could have been much clearer and reasonable about grading.
Terrible teacher! I took him for DE. Most of the time he was not in his office during office hours. Be prepared for writing a lot of essays. His lectures are unorganized. He is unclear in the prompts on his homework assignments. He answers questions with more questions. You will have to basically teach yourself the material.
He is tough but good. Don't miss class or a quiz. No make ups. Must be ready to think for yourself, but Burtch helped a lot!! Very good class.
I have taken DEQ with other professors and Burtch is clear, takes things slowly, and gives a hoot, which definitely helps. He is an extremely tough grader but a great teacher so it evens out. Definitely recommend for DEQ.
I took him for D.E. He does not follow a textbook. He gives out handouts and a ton of homework. I did all the homework. He will never give you full credit for homework. I averaged a 70 on my homework. His tests are extremely hard. He expects to one to explain concepts. However, he will never give one feedback or a clear explanation or example.
Lots of homework, assigns mymathlab almost every night. If you do the homework and show up it's not too hard of a class, just very time consuming.
worst math teacher I met, unorganized lecture, test and quizzes are hard, if you wanna get high grade, go to his office hour before every class. and study hard by yourself
Nononsense prof who teaches for understanding. (1)Be prepared to justify (show work) or explain all solutionsknow all the material. (2)Homework quiz most class-daysexactly what to expect on a test, and how he will grade. (3)Do all homework & don't skip class. (4)Clear lectures, thorough coverage, good handouts, helpful in office, no surprises.
Terrible. Pop quizzes weigh heavily but he doesn't give enough time to complete or do well on them. Group work during every class means that lecture clarity is chaotic, although the hands on practice is beneficial. Worst part: the material on the tests does not reflect closely lecture or homework. Many students thought we were unfairly tested.
Best math teacher I've ever had. Teaches concepts thoroughly, really solid lectures. That being said - the problems that show up on his tests are consistently the hardest version of that material and he is a ruthless grader. I have never learned this much and gotten such a bad grade. He would be the perfect teacher if I wasn't trying to transfer.
Buckle up because this will be one of the hardest classes you ever take. There are 4 tests and an optional final that will drop your lowest test. Many pop quizzes. Homework is optional but necessary. Examples in class are not difficult but homework and tests are. GO TO OFFICE HOURS TO GET HELP. Clear teacher but very tough grader.
Do not take this class.
Possibly the biggest waste of time. He may say he is a nice guy to himself all the time but really if he cared about whether or not his students did well he would actually assign homework as a portion of the final grade and not decide to put the most impossible questions on every test. Do yourself a favor and avoid this dude at all costs. NO REALLY
His lectures are not helpful whatsoever, neither is he. He puts material on the test that wasn't on homework.
Great Professor, learned the material so future classes are easier, wish examples in class and suggested problems were harder than the exam problems
It was disappointing that almost everyone in my class failed. Its not that he isnt smart he just doesnt explain things clearly. He will repeat the same thing over again and is very disorganized with his lectures. And when you go to his office hours he makes you feel like youre wasting his time. I would not recommend if math isnt your best subject.
Do not take him. Self proclaiming professor, claims he is an angel really just man that is lost in his lectures. Exams are not at all what you expect. Must justify all of your work for any points.
Honestly worst teacher i have ever had. Do not take. Avoid at all cost. Just take the class next semester he is that bad. Basically an online class that meets 2 times a week to do group work and wast your time. He is mean.
Exams are conceptually heavy and he expects your answer to be spot on. He doesn't like physical textbooks and only gives online homework. Studying the textbook is not recommended for this professor. Study the notes he gives out and evenly study everything on them.
Lets start off that I'm a math major and I got a D. If you are transferring credit to UT, pick another professor. Mark does not care about students and makes tests designed to fail students. You can study your homework or class work for hours and fail. Problems he never covered on the test. No curve. Bonus impossible. Condescending. WASTE OF TIME.
He is impossible to please, and will spend maybe a second grading each homework problem. Despite 0 patience for student's schedules, If he makes a mistake (which is ok), he is never present for office hours to fix it(not ok). If you're a girl, get ready for proximity and uncomfortable flirting. Mandatory daily group work, through the whole lecture.
Absolutely awful teacher who just exposes you to Calculus II and doesn't actually teach you!
He sees himself as a nice guy, but in reality he could careless if his students pass. Offers help but is rude about it. Class notes/in class work is easy, but not like tests. Online homework is hard. He is the worst teacher I've ever had and grades his tests like its an essay. One wrong word and he docks points. Do not recommend. Not nice. Bad idea
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES. He is a nice teacher and a cool guy, but this man loves making things difficult. I'm in college math, not a difficult subject at all, and not one person in my class has an A. No curve and barely any help. If you are trying to transfer somewhere I would suggest taking another teacher as he will probably ruin your gpa.
Take him if you really want to learn something. He is a good teacher and cool person, but too tough grader. Do not even think about an easy A!
He is good but tough.. Work hard and it will be worth it.
Combination of tough grader and challenging material makes many students complain. But Dr. Burtch is a good teacher. Go to his office. It helps a lot!
He is a good teacher and knows about math and can be really helpful if you go to his office hours but is very condescending towards his "lower" level math classes. it can be very frustrating at times. He is a stickler and all around just a jerk, I will not take him again as an instructor and all of my classmates agree and I got an A in his class.
Grades extremely hard and picky. Rushes to get out of class and doesn't utilize the full class time to lecture. I took him two semesters in a row for precal and calc thinking it would be easier having him another semester and it wasn't at all. Good at teaching concepts but not worth taking if you need a good grade
Prof. Burtch is really good at teaching. He teaches everything conceptually and uses examples easier to grasp than straight up Calculus. My problem with him is that his exams are difficult. Some problems are unnecessarily hard, and seem to be there to bring your grade down. At least he has extra credit in exams, but those are the hardest problems.
Dr. Burtch is a great Teacher for Calc 3. It was easy to follow and understand. Very clear. Gives a lot of quizzes but they are very similar to homework problems. The exams are exactly what you expect. Great class!!
Made the dreaded College algebra seem not so bad. Good teacher. I learned a lot.
Dr. Burtch was definitely a good calculus teacher. I do not enjoy math by any means, but he made the class more than bearable. I came out of almost every lecture with a good understanding of the concepts taught, but the tests are pretty difficult. Study, do extra problems, go to the LL, and then study more. Also, expect quizzes every class.
I also came from an entirely different County College and was unaware of the Trigonometric pre-requisite. So I was very lost. Professor was very inspirational and considered my time spent in the learning lab, but was not an easy grader.
Professor Burtch isn't an "easy" teacher, but he is great at teaching math. His lectures are VERY interactive, with lots of worksheets and student participation. You almost don't realize how well you are learning the information until you start doing the homework and breeze right through it. Attend, participate, pass!
Don't take if you don't like group work don't go to his class for mathematics. Don't expect much help if you email him with a question. Doesn't matter if its a time crunch or anything to he will still tell you to talk to him in class or during his office hours that are at a time when most people are in class and can't attend.
Prof Burtch isn't the instructor to take if you aren't a fan of mandatory group work. Generally uncomfortable to be around if you are female, as he can be flirtatious and does not seem to respect the normal boundaries of space. Do not recommend if you dislike random physical contact. Not military friendly.
I've never done well in math before in my life, I could never wrap my head around all the numbers, until this class. The way this teacher explains things makes it very easy to understand.
He's really good. You just have to want to learn and do your homework like a responsible student. Be ready to put in the work like you should and you will thoroughly enjoy his classes. He is very passionate about teaching and strives for everyone in class to ACTUALLY understand what's happening with the math.
Doctor Burtch has an amazing way of getting the students involved with teaching one another. Theres one thing to hear a professor drone about a subject and its another thing to work in small teams to tackle problems. This IMO has helped me better then just lecture and note taking. It was a different approach to learning. Dont be late for class!!
Dr. Burtch is a no nonse teacher. HARD grader, HARD test, and no extra credit. I did like him as a teacher though. He WANTS PARTICIPATION, and do ALL your work.
Found Prof Burtch to be nitpicky in his grading and doesn't grade the homework in its entirety. He selects a few problems throughout the paper and that's that, but he does give credit for completing the assignment. His exams are tough, plus tons of quizzes. Be aware that he expects you to work in groups, period.
Prof. Burtch was not for me. I get what he is trying to accomplish, he sets the bar high and holds his students to a higher standard. He is not sensitive to all learning styles and shames students for coming to office hours. If you ask for clarification in class he just repeats it louder. Doesn't utilize full class period, or his office hours.
If you're one of the majority of people who likes easy classes & stuff handed to you then don't take this class. If you're willing to work for your grade while learning in the process then I recommend this class. He is pretty tough but its CALCULUS so of course it wont be easy. Pay attention in class and do the work at home and you'll get an A
Would literally laugh if no one knew the answer to questions he asked during class, doesnt teach much expects you to work in groups to figure it out which is impractical since if we knew the subject already wed test out.
This professor will grade quizzes/exams very harshly. One tiny mistake & you lose a chunk of points. Don't take this class if you are not the best at math. I spent more almost whole days studying the exams, just to score high Ds and mid Cs. Very time consuming class. However, he teaches well & is engaging. Only problem is he grades way too harsh.
Probably someone Id be friends with if I was older but not someone I want as a professor again. Very tough grader, gives minimal support, and overall just not a good professor. I understand not wanting your class to be known as an easy-A and want people to work for their grades- but he takes it to a whole new level WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. RUIN GPA
Tough but good. You will learn A LOT if you are willing to work. If not, you will struggle.
Tough, tough grader, BUT, if you are willing to work, and not just have stuff handed to you, then he is the absolute gem. He drills material so deep into your brain, that you feel and are prepared for the next math classes. Took him for both Calc 1 and Calc 2. If you only need Calc for core though, then you might be better off with someone easier.
I enjoyed his teaching style; he makes learning calculus exciting! I believe he is a fair grader. If you dedicate the time to work on the material, you will learn the concepts and can earn a good grade. I strongly recommend asking him for the suggested homework to use as additional practice!
Great teacher! Every class starts with a quiz.
Mr. Burtch is not a difficult professor. He is funny and passionate of his teachings. Dont be afraid to ask him to repeat what you didnt understand the first time. You'll see he makes sense the second time around. If you do your work and pay attention you'll see his classes are extremely easy. After hour tutoring dont miss out he is AMAZING.
Message for the salties: Why the hell are you in college if you cant show up, participate and just do the damn homework? He is fair if you at least act like you care. Don't expect him to baby you and remind you 5 times what page the lecture is on during the lecture. It's not hard. Message for people who care: Study, homework, participate pass
Dr. Burtch is a great teacher. I noticed that the students who worked hard and participated pretty much all got A's or B's. He is fair, tough, but very engaging. Class goes by quickly. Definitely take this guy.
The classes rarely were held the entire length, we were let out early almost everyday. He teaches fast & I felt I didnt get my money worth. He taught quickly but he had the opportunity to be much more detailed & through. Dr Burtch requires students to know why we are testing for the answers in his verbiage. Expect to be asked 3-4 quesions on tests.
Very tough teacher. Invades personal space very often and can make you feel uncomfortable. Gets bothered when asked for further assistance. Would not recommend.
I was so nervous taking his class due to the amount of negative reviews, however he's only hard on his students because he actually cares and wants you to pass his class. I would not have passed without his help. Don't skip class because chances are there will be a quiz reviewing what you learned the day before. 10/10 will take his class again.
Honestly, he was the worst professor I've ever had. He barely answers emails and would leave them unresponded when I had questions. He says to ask questions in class but answers them in a rude way. His exams are hard and he is a very hard grader. I would get points taken off, even when my answers were right. I recommend not taking this professor.
Professor Burtch was the worst! He never seemed to want to help his students that were struggling, and to top it off he would either take days to respond to my emails or not respond at all. There is homework due almost every night, even after a 2 and a half hour long exam. He also takes points off of exam questions that were answered correctly.
He's condescending. Doesn't offer much in terms of support. Learn the way he teaches you or you don't pass. When we need clarification he just laughs at us slower people, asks the smarter people to answer, and relishes himself being smarter than us. Consecutively makes test more difficult than they need to be. 4/16 students made it to the end.
Dr. Burtch is challenging, but if you work hard and do your hw, you will succeed. He really cares about his students understanding the ideas.
This class was not easy but not hard. If you put in the work, not hard to get the grade. He explains things well if you ask questions. Hard to do well if you don't participate. Don't believe all the negative things on here. He's good, but not for lazy students.
awful... was super hard and seemed like he didnt care to help his students... also sometimes he seemed irritated if someone asked a question or didnt get what he was teaching
Despite the negative reviews found on this site, Dr. Burtch is actually quite good. Put in the work, go to class, and you will probably be successful.
Mark Burtch was the worst professor I've ever had. He intentionally makes all the test questions harder than the material he goes over in his lectures. He doesn't give out reviews or study guides so you go into the test blind. If it's convenient for him but harmful to you and your grade he will always choose what is more convenient for him. RUN.
Overall, Professor Burtch knows his stuff well, and the lectures display that. However, he tends to go too fast, and speeds to cover as much material as possible. Ultimately, he feels extremely disorganized, and I'd take another professor if I were you. If you have no option, make sure to ask questions, pay attention, and study for the tests.
Feedback on tests was unhelpful as they were 2 words, nothing or ?.If you reach out to him for anything expect no response, or one after it's too late and irrelevant. Gives no opportunity to earn pts back unless everyone does bad so that way he doesn't get in trouble. I heavily relied on help from students and YouTube. Wish I could say more to warn
Dr. Burtch is good, clear, and willing to help.
Professor Burtch's in person Calc II class was by far the greatest college class I have ever taken. He is extremely thorough and teaches you to ace his exams and genuinely learn the material. I will admit the class is hard but that is not going to change with any professor. Not too much HW and just go with a genuine effort and you'll do great.
He is the worst professor. I will not recommend him to anyone. He doesn't care about his students and he never answers questions through emails. Don't take him he is not a good teacher I don't know why other people have given good comments about him he is not a good teacher. Don't register him you will regret like I did.
Professor Burtch is the best teacher I've ever had. He was enthusiastic about the material the entire semester, and genuinely wanted every student to understand each concept. If you pay attention to the lectures, do the homework, ask questions, you'll do great. Sincerely, I'm even sad the semesters over because I loved his class so much.
Dr. Burtch was awesome. Clearly passionate about teaching math and very good at it. You do need to work hard, but if you do you will learn a lot.
Bit tricky using all of the online features for grading and submitting assignments. But overall taught the class pretty well. Just make sure to ask questions if you're confused on a concept.
He was the worst teacher I think I've ever had. He teaches his material entirely too fast, he never responds to emails UNTIL the day OF class or on test day and it is almost NEVER helpful feedback. If you can, I recommend getting a different teacher because I had the worst freshman experience.
If you want to feel confident about "Calculus I" at the end of the class and you don't too sensitive if get deserved low score sometimes - he is the right teacher for you. Follow the teacher's paper materials, do your homework thoughtfully and you can get a good score easily.
This guy got my ass through Cal2 in summer 2019, one of the best teachers I ever had.
Professor Burtch is absolutely phenomenal at teaching calculus and I cannot recommend him highly enough. The class is hard, but you will know the material afterwards. I'd particularly recommend him if you plan on taking a higher math course after you finish his class. He may be a fallen angel.
Dr. Burtch is the best math professor I've ever had. He explains clearly, knows from head to toe what he is teaching, really chill and fun, and lectures are interesting. He has no issues going over old material in order to help the explanation. He does give a lot of home "quizzes" but if you have all of these your grade will go up quickly. The best
Look I took this class for spring 2024 but within the second week drop out I know why his class had many sears available he goes off at different directions in class very confusing to learn homework is different than the pop quizzes so to save my grades I had to drop the class.
Tough class. Passable. Be prepared to work hard. My suggestion, day 1 find at least one study partner. You will need to work through a lot of problems in this class. It helps to study together. Good professor, just realize you need to put in the time.
Ghosted me after emailing about my grade. I did everything that he had told me to do especially passing the final with an A and he still failed me and denied saying that I'd pass if I did what he said.
I recommend you avoid this professor at all costs, even if it means you have to go to a different campus. He would give lots of homework and take home quizzes, which would have nothing in common with the exams. His lectures were not in-depth at all, which meant I was just lost throughout most of the lectures. Do not waste your college funds on him.
Don't take a math class with this professor! Lectures are very difficult to follow and very confusing to follow. Quizzes and tests are very different and much harder from the homework. I emailed him a couple times during the semester for questions and never ever responded to any of my emails I emailed. The notes are also kind of confusing...
Prof. Burtch is a laid back guy, but his lectures are all over the place, the notes that were given to us were constantly out of order, had typo's, and incorrect questions. The homework takes forever and is some lazy online program and it didn't help you on the exams at all. Spent weekends w/ hours of studying and don't feel like I'm better at math
Everyday there is a 10 minute quiz so attendance matters, then a lecture for the rest of the class time. Really wants everyone to have a deep understanding of math. Group participation everyday, multiple HW assignments, 15-20 questions each. only 4 tests but beware test 3. Overall a very caring and understanding prof, use paul's online math notes.
Professor is cold and uncaring. Don't expect compassion from him because he does not care what you have going on in your life outside of classes. I recommend starting a study group. it helps tremendously.
Professor Burtch's Calc II course is no easy feat, but with dedication and the right study tools like unstuck ai, you can ace it. Go to class, do the work, and you'll learn a ton. Not an easy A, but very rewarding.
Took his class a while ago, his lecture was difficult to follow. The notes are confusing to follow and didn't slow down. Almost every class, there is a quiz, but the quiz seemed different than the homework and notes. He bragged about how hard his class is on the first day of class. To protect my GPA, I dropped his class.
Don't feel like answering his questions? Get ready for all of class to be halted until someone participates. Don't have a printer? You failed, can't take the test with a nightmare of a set up. Lectures themselves are fine and informative, but the homework often contains material not taught (probably due to the online text/workbook).
Mr Burtch is fantastic. He can be stern but is very fair and will give you credit for the work you put in. If you show him effort, he will show you grace. I struggle with math hard and had to bust my butt to secure a B, which is the highest grade I've gotten in a math class ever. TBH, I would go out of my way to have him as a teacher again.
Prepare to work. Homework (online via Pearson) is due often. Expect a quiz every class. Calculus demands a lot of your study time. Dr. Burtch was an excellent professor. Take him if you want to learn Calculus. Fair grader, very personable when you engage him, always available during office hours. *Find a study partner day 1 ** Attend SI session
Cal 2 is TOUGH! Great Prof. Lots of Homework. Tests were fair but challenging. Take this guy to really learn. Be prepared to work your butt off. Find study partner(s) before you walk out of the first class. If you have any questions, go see him during office hours! SI rules! Use it. Group Me/Discord is a great tool to use intraclass.
Dr. Burtch is seriously a great professor because he understands *how* to teach math in a way where you can actually apply the information. I'm only passing Calc 2 because of how well he taught Cal 1. Calculus is hard, you have to put in some work.
Took his class a while ago for Math 1324. Do not advise taking his class. His lectures do not follow the book's criteria or material. Every time I asked a question, he wouldn't fully answer it and would just get smart with me. There is a pop quiz almost every class, and he doesn't tell you when there is going to be one, which is frustrating.
Really enjoyed his class and his lectures
Cool guy but as a teacher he has clocked out. He has no idea what is on the HW he just takes it from the textbook. If he offers extra credit don't take it seriously. continuously went back on his word. Actual teaching is good. Weirdly friendly with some of the women in the class. mark has a superiority complex and should retire.
Class attendance is essential to passing his class! For a hard class like Calc II, clarifying questions are a must. Dr. Burtch encourages it and applauds you for it! He has class handouts that are great for note-taking as well as studying before his exams. He moves a little quick when working problems as a class so make sure to ask if you get lost!
