Very tough grader and lots of reading. Doesn't like to lecture, and most of the class work is done in groups. Looks for specific things in assignments. Usually gives good feedback on work.

Kind of a strange/funny/weird guy. Prefers group work, doesn't like to lecture (they're too rushed not much discussion). Tough grader, very specific, kind of picky (which is annoying). Likes to bring up pop-culture (trying to be cool).

Great class if you want to learn about ancient greek and roman literature. Reading is a little demanding, but worth it. Calkins is a little flamboyant, but very funny. Great class for Segment III. Group discussion is great for filling in the gaps.

He made the class very easy.. his lectures were often boring, but sort of essential for quizzes. He quizzes on stuff from his lectures and plot points. Assigns one project that's ungraded. Works with "weekly discussion groups." Pretty cute though. I liked him.

He admits first thing that he knows little to nothing about ancient Greek history, which is pretty disappointing off the bat, esp. since it's a classics class. His class has the difficulty of a college class and the stupidity of a high school class. Never in my whole college career have I been asked to draw a picture representing Odysseus' struggle. He seems nice though and tends to tie in a lot of pop culture references into his lectures which is kind of fun.

I hated this class. He only wants you to write essays with ideas that HE wants to hear, and if you don't write exactly the way he wants he gives you a C. He gives reading group work because he can't lecture to save his life, and there is too much work for a BS GE class. Boring to the max & really frusterating. I wanted to kill myself in this class!

He does not lecture long. He tells jokes because he does not have much to say regarding the assigned texts and so students pay attention to him. Dr. Calkins is one of those professors you should encounter at least once in college. He's funny and laid back, and if you take notes during his short lectures, you should pass the class with a breeze. Poor excuse for a teacher. He never treated us with respect, gave arbitrary grades and wouldn't give feedback unless we went to him, assigned hw more hours before it was due, etc. This guy canceled class multiple times; as a result, he gave us more work the last two weeks than was fair. Almost dropped the class and didn't; now I regret that choice.
