Mark loves teaching this class and it shows! Though his tests are really hard, if you actually know the concepts and dont just memorize the specifics you will do fine. I know that I assumed all I should do is memorize the exact stuff he taught us, but he is really wanting you to have a deeper understanding. Get outside class help from GTF's & Mark
Mark is definitely an extremely enthusiastic teacher. I won't lie, the class and course load is hard if you're expecting a good great, but definitely very possible if you go into homework sessions/study sessions. He definitely wants his students to succeed though and that shows.
Good Professor. Cares about the students and the material. He was a little scatter-brained and unorganized at times, but it didn't ever cause any problems. My one complaint is that we rarely used the textbook and instead used his lecture notes. Printing those off was a total pain and used up a ton of ink and paper.
He records lectures and puts up almost too detailed notes after every class. There are tons of GTF's with office hours, and if you look back at what he's taught after a couple weeks it really is much more simple than it seems. His tests are pretty easy, but not as easy as the practice questions would let you think. Tons of outlets for help.
Made his 212 class much too difficult for a 200 level class. Absolutely do NOT recommend this class. Take an alternative instead if you can
Worst teacher of the 21X Series at the UofO. It's more about his weird kinks, than teaching (enthusiastic, but misguided). He yearns for other to recognize his self proclaimed 'genius' status. GTF were somewhat helpful, but obliviously only kissing his ass for a letter of recommendation. Amazing topic, do not take! Take 211,213,214 instead!
Mark is a good guy who loves teaching. My advice is to get as much help as you can especially in the first few weeks. This class is hard, but the truth is it all comes up in later classes. His tests were hard, but looking back it really helped me know the material. I have several friends who think this class best prepared them for the DAT/ MCAT.
Tests way to complex. This guy is super weird and annoying. Avoid him if you can!
take this class over summer school or elsewhere if you can!!! His teaching style and tests are completely incomprehensible!
I don't think I've ever had a more disorganized and incomprehensible teacher, ever. He may mean well and he can be helpful in person, but as a lecturer he is worthless.
Mark is great!! His class is not easy but it's worth it if you like biology! This is by far one of the most interesting classes I've taken at the UO. There is a ton of help-podcasts of every lecture, pre-lectures, homework sessions, office hours. He loves the subject and it shows. He's friendly, smart and passionate about biology!
This class is NOT easy. You seriously need to put your effort. Otherwise, you will not even pass the class. Somehow the test is not very straight forward. However, professor is willing to explain endlessly.
If you can, don't take Bi212 with Mark Carrier. He doesn't teach the normal curriculum. If you're looking for a general biology course, you'll get something entirely different (and not in a good way). He is extremely disorganized, mumbles a lot during lecture, and is generally incomprehensible.
Past comments had me scared to take this class, but PLEASE, Mark is not that bad. yes he is fairly unorganized, he does mumble and he does like to withhold the answers to clicker questions but his tests are fair and he will give you the answers to homework questions if you go to his HW sessions. Mark keeps my attention in lecture by moving (rare)!
I really like Mark. Yeah, sometimes I have no idea what he's talking about, but for the most part he's understandable. If you study the notes and do your homework questions the exams are NOT difficult. I don't know why he has the ratings he does, they almost kept me from taking this class. I'm glad I did though I'm enjoying it.
i hated this class. The amount of materials is too much! ive taken 400 level classes that are easier then this! You actually HAVE to go to his office hours, GTF's office hours, lectures, plus more to get the materials in and out. There is A LOT to this class!!!! Mark isnt a bad guy; its the class and his tests that sucks!
I am quite proficient in the field of biology. This class was impossible. Mark's test questions were so unclear I could not understand them. His lectures consist of incoherent drabble and if you take this class be prepared to work very hard for a C in a class that should be a relatively easy A. This class was harder than O Chem.
I enjoyed the class and I learned a ton of biology, but Mark was generally incomprehensible during lecture. Attending office hours, homework sessions, and GTF office hours was almost mandatory to get a good grade in the class. I managed an A but only because I put A LOT of time and effort into this course. Only take this course if you love science.
His lectures had way to much information and his test questions were not clear at all. I studied really hard for all exams and feel like there was no point once I saw the exam!
The hardest class in the BIO series avoid like the plague unless its the only class you are taking during the term its a 4hour a day class to get a C
Definitely one of the worst professors I have had at UO, if not the worst. Lectures were unorganized, he was really hard to understand, he didn't explain anything very well, tests were ridiculous, just an all around bad instructor. He may be a nice guy who knows biology but he doesn't know how to teach. Avoid this class if possible.
Geez people, he's not that bad! Pay close attention in lecture, attend office hours and you'll do fine in the class. Mark's a good guy and just wants people to learn the material, which are qualities many professors do not have. Study hard and do the readings. And chill out.
Yes, this class is tough - but the level of understanding required probably prepared me the most for my upper-division classes and taught me to really LEARN rather than MEMORIZE. Never had a class have so many resources available, and it was easy to see that Mark *really* did care about us succeeding together as a team. Give him a chance, honestly.
If you pay attention and go to office hours, then you will do OK. problem is the tests are EXTREMELY tricky, never the answer you think. Worst part of the class is the confusion on the tests.
Tests were unbelievably hard and unclear. Taking notes in lecture, even after printing out the pre lecture notes, is nearly impossible. How anyone gets an A in that class baffles me. For an entry/prereq course it was way too difficult and the professor lacks teaching skills.
His exams are set up to trick you. The amount of time that's required to get a decent grade, far exceeds the amount of time a full time student has available to put into it, with just a 12 credit load. You are never tested on your knowledge of the material, only on the inverse application of the material. This class will lower your GPA.
Carrier is a knowledgeable professor, but he makes his tests quite difficult. In reality they aren't extremely bad if you go to every class, hw session, and at LEAST 1-2 office hours a week. You really have to know the stuff in order to do well in the class. A thoroughly challenging class, but there are a lot of BPTs that help out with the material
For an early 200 level course, this is by far one of the hardest classes I have taken. With a 12 hour credit load (full time) there is not enough time to study the amount needed to pass this course. The homework, labs, and paper are fairly easy. However, the extremely hard tests will put you under!
The tests honestly did not reflect the lecture material much at all. I ended up with a decent grade because of the BPTs. It takes a LOT of extra hours in BPT homework help sessions to really understand the material as Carrier's lectures are largely incomprehensible. I find his style of teaching VERY confusing, and he goes through slides too fast
I personally felt ridiculed as well as had seen it with other students. This guy has a huge ego and needs 20 somethings to verify his ability. He is a lousy instructor and if it were not for all the additional resources no one would pass his class. I would be curious to see both his drop out rate and how many students he fails.
This guy is an awful professor...He makes everything so much more complicated than it needs to be and quizzes on little details that are hardly touched on in class. He posts lecture slides that are nothing like the slides that he shows in class so if you miss a day for some reason DO NOT rely on these posted slides...very misleading
He is a very difficult teacher and expects a lot from his students. The tests are quite challenging but if you study for them and go to bot hours, you should be ok. Although it was one of the hardest 200 level (or any level) class I've taken, it's not impossible to do well. He has office hours, homework sessions and more. Work hard, you'll do fine.
Tests were awful, and the lectures are hard to sit through.
His tests were awful and lectures seemed like they would never end.
Mark Carrier is a harder than most professors but you actually learn the material. If you do the reading and HW assignments you'll be fine. If you don't like him go to the lectures for the pure enjoyment of seeing him ramble through his lectures. He's a fine teacher, he's not going to hand you everything on a silver platter like most teachers do.
Great professor and guy. He really cares about his students doing well, but at the same WILL NOT hand you a grade. You will have to work hard in this class to do well, but he provides plenty of office hours, BPT hours and homework sessions to make sure to help students who seek it!
Mark is an all around great teacher. He has personality, is funny, has put a lot of effort into his lectures, he's always citing the latest research, and he has tons of office hours. While the class covers A LOT of material, its really interesting stuff and well worth it.
I love him.
Mark is a nice guy, but WOW are his exams tough. He never tests directly on your knowledge, but rather confusing inverse applications of it. I understand the material fully, enough to explain it to others and even draw diagrams, but when it comes to test time, prepare to be stumped and frustrated, even after weeks of studying and tutoring.
Prof. Carrier is a great person that knows his information very well but when it comes to his exams they are extremely hard. His exams arn't your typical exam but rather how to apply them. I understood the material and were able to draw diagrams to others but his exams were nothing like that.
His lectures are useless. Had to take this class twice despite lots of hours studying the first go around.Do not rely on him for any information.Go to the BPTs and GTFs, especially their review sessions, they are the only way that you will pass the class. He always answers questions with more questions. No straight answers ever.
Prof. Carrier takes a genuine interest in his students. yes, his exams are pretty tough, but if you attend office hours, ask questions, and make this class a top priority, you can succeed with hard work!
He gives you all the material to succeed, but you need to work impossibly hard. I put about as much work in this class as the other 3 I was taking COMBINED and I got A in 300 level environmental science course, A in gen. chem, A+ in an upper division bio, and a B- in Carrier's class..
You will not pass this course if you don't regularly attend his office hours and understand the material forwards, backwards, sideways and inside out. The material is extremely interesting, but hours of effort after every lecture is necessary to pass. Difficult course but Mark is EXTREMELY helpful and clear if you seek his help. Funny guy as well.
Give Mark a chance, he's awesome. He's freakishly smart and very helpful. Every tutor, lab GTF, and especially Mark want you to do well in this class so take advantage of all the help available. (There's a lot). The material is really challenging but really interesting too. You have to understand concepts rather than just pure memorization.
There is so much information to take in for this class, I have never worked so hard for one 4 credit class before. I probably study for this class 15 hours a week and I still feel like I will get no higher than a Low B. These tests feel unnecessarily difficult and confusing. However Carrier and his TAs work really hard to help you understand info.
While the course content in itself is fascinating, the exams for this class are unfair and unreasonable. The exams are not fair reflections of student knowledge. Professor Carrier and his TA/undergrad team and happy to help, however the amount of material covered, and the difficulty of the exams make this class impossibly challenging.
Mark Carrier teaches a mean biology class. This class WILL take over your life for the term if you do it correctly (or you're a prodigy). Start office hours early in the term (office hours is where you will actually learn), and introduce yourself. His exams will kick your ass.
I failed Mark's class the first time, which was probably the best thing to happen to me in college. To pass this class you will need to work harder than you have most likely ever worked for a single class before. Mark is my favorite teacher at UO because he kicked my ass, and turned me into a more dedicated student. Good luck , you got this!
Mark goes through a lot of material, very quickly and tests incredibly hard. His expectations for the students are very high, and he commonly will not finish his lecture material for the day, yet still expect you to know the information he didn't go over (despite his assurance that book use will be low in the class).
Hands down the hardest 200 level course I've taken. Mark is extremely intelligent and funny, but his tests were downright impossible. I attended almost every class, went to office hours multiple times a week, studied my butt off and still barely managed to get a C in this class. Almost every exam question is designed to trick you.
The class is more difficult than other 200 level classes. The advice you need to take is to read his lecture notes carefully for 2-3 hours a day, every day. Do all given practice problems and go to seek help if ones do not make sense. Quality of his notes (there is no textbook) is often lacking, contributing to the difficulty of the class.
Mark was the best teacher I have ever had. He cares so much about his students succeeding and he is so dedicated to his job. His tests are hard but so creatively written.
Carrier is not a professional. He is rude and abrasive. His lectures are chaotic and unorganized. While the course content in itself is fascinating, the exams for this class are unfair and unreasonable. I personally felt ridiculed and condescended to on a weekly basis. Definitely the worst professor I have had at University of Oregon.
Mark was a most unfortunate professor, probably the poorest I've had in my undergrad & grad education. His course was extremely unorganized and random, which he tied to tie together with strings of barely-enunciated logic. I'd recommend taking this from someone else.
This is the worst class I have ever taken! Not only do you not know what to study for, his lectures are unclear and filled with typos. I suggest that you don't take this class unless you are planning on putting a ridiculous amount of time into studying for it.
Makes you know the material inside and out, but cares about your learning and does all he can to give you the highest grade. Literally goes through each student's grades looking for improvement over the term and tries to find the best way to weight them.
This class is the first time I've ever taken biology seriously, and I learned so much it still proves useful a year later. I attribute lots of my success in upper division biochem classes to Mark's class. Tested required deep conceptual knowledge of the systems taught, and taught me to learn and love biology in a way I hadn't before
Some of the hardest tests I have ever taken. Failed the first midterm. He gives a TON of different sources to learn from, puts in as much effort as he expects you to. He's funny, freakishly smart. This class made me a better student. Only way I was able to do well was office hours and transcribing his lecture notes into my own words, all 400 pages.
Best teacher I've ever had. The amount of help offered is immense. This is because the class is not easy. Watch his videos, and read the lecture notes and take notes on those. Keep up on the lectures notes as they can be inundating if you slack off. Hilarious teacher with a great staff. Best class I've taken at U of O. Wish he taught more classes.
Incredibly difficult class, but Mark has so many help sessions that it's not impossible to learn the material. He really cares about his students and while he doesn't curve the overall class, he curves students individually to give them the best grade he can.
Never worked so hard for a class in my life, but like other people have said it honestly taught me how to really study and be a better student. I'm really thankful I took this class with him. Material is interesting/ easy to understand if you put in the time. Videos help a lot and his grading system is great for people who improve over the term
Mark is a great guy, but this class is hard, the hardest class I have taken yet. He wants you to succeed and offers tons of office hours and homework help. GO, that was my biggest mistake. Also the TAs are helpful, go to their OHs too. This class is hard, but going to OHs, and not letting yourself get behind or slack and you are good.
Mark Carrier is a great teacher. The content of this class is difficult, but you can definitely come out with an A if you review lecture notes everyday and take advantage of all the help Mark offers. Attend tutor/office hours, use the videos, practice tests, and lecture notes and you'll be just fine.
Mark is probably the worst teacher I have ever had. His tests are absolutely impossible.. I failed every single midterm and quiz because his tests are designed to confuse you. Still ended up with a C in the class but he is terrible. Avoid at all costs.
This class is designed as a weeder class for human physiology majors and pre-med students. THE COURSE CONTENT IS NOT EASY. Content is all about cellular mechanisms (maintaining homeostatic levels) in plants and animals. Mark is a tough teacher who gives brutal exams, but he is helpful to those who seek him out. USE HIS VIDEOS ON BLACKBOARD.
The general concepts you learn in class are straightforward, but there is just so much you have to know. Make sure you go to Mark's many office hours as well as to the TA hours. The tests are very challenging because they are designed to make you think in a way you are not used to in science. As long as you study a lot you will do fine.
He's a great professor who knows how to teach and cares about his students. Sure, if you don't go for help its a hard class but if you go to his office hours and hw sessions you understand everything. The people dissing on him just are bad students who odiously don't care about their grade enough to go to office hours. BEST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD
He has like 14 hours of office hours starting from 7:30 in the morning, and he has so many help sessions but it was such a hard class. This class literally took over my life and I hated it. The tests were terrible and almost impossible. Average for both midterms were like 50%. He is a great guy but summer with a different prof might be better.
It's super tough but if you study your ass off and get help you can do it.
Mark has 12 hours of office hours every week, he has a teaching staff of like 20?, he has small homework sessions and quiztest review sessions. If you want the help, it's there. His tests are hard and there is a serious learning curve to the questions he asks but by the end you'll know what to expect. The material is sweet, don't skip class.
If you want to pass or get a good grade, do not waste your time or money on this course. You WILL fail his tests and quizzes. Our class averages for the midterms were 49% and 44%. That said, Mark is a really nice guy, is one of the best professors I've ever had, and I learned a ton in this course before I dropped it.
The class will challenge you to think in a way that you have never before. You will really need to hone in on your problem solving skills; it is not a class you can simply memorize an regurgitate information. One of the best classes I've taken, but expect to work your butt off. Attend office hours, rewrite lecture notes, and make use of the videos.
Exams are brutal, wording is difficult to understand, and there is a ton of information provided to you. He doesn't really use a textbook, so most of your work is done after class (reading post lecture notes and taking self exams). However, I learned more in his class than any other I recall and he really wants you to succeed. Go to office hours.
By far my favorite class at UofO. I am currently a medical student at OHSU and his class, more than any other, prepared me for the depth of thought and quantity of information required to master to pass a medical school course. I was a TA in his class for many years and saw first hand his passion for teaching, and his ability to find TAs who care.
This class was extremely difficult to me. The material made sense, but during tests and quizzes, the information had to be extremely applied, which I understand is fair, but it seemed no matter how good I felt about the material before tests, I wasn't prepared.
After taking AP Biology, I thought this class would be a good review of concepts I earned in high school. I was mistaken. There is too much content in this class to really feel like you could ace tests. Plus the tests are written with the intent to trick you. I would advise you take this class with other classes that are easy.
Mark is a very tough teacher because he expects students to really understand the material- not memorize it. But he genuinely wants students to succeed and has a lot of opportunity for extra credit
One of the toughest classes I have ever taken. Tests are unnecessarily difficult and it seems as if he tries to trick you. I love biology, but this course seemed exceptionally difficult for a "general" bio course. Be prepared to study really really hard and barely pass.
Makes you learn a lot on your own.
Mark is a great professor! He wants students to succeed, and he tries hard to teach. The class builds fundamental ability for advanced biology. Memorization is not as important as logic and understanding, the qualities we expect our doctors to have. I think the class difficulty level is reasonable and office hours really help! Fun Class! Work hard!
Mark is a nice enthusiastic teacher but made this course way more painful than necessary. Too much material was presented in an unorganized fashion (jumped back & forth between plants/mammals way too often). A lot of course work and studying is expected out of every student. Tests are extremely hard & barely ever straightforward. Avoid if possible.
Interesting teacher who is very passionate but lectures are a little bit all over the place. He cares a lot about improvement so don't worry if you don't do well in the beginning. Go to office hours so he knows who you are and you will get a better grade.
Easily the hardest class I have taken in college. Memorization isn't enough, everything is based on understanding logic and pathways. Be prepared to study countless hours by drawing diagrams and pathways over and over. Topics jump back and forth between plants and animals, but there are parallels between mechanisms. Work hard, good luck.
Good luck. Hardest class I've ever taken by far.
He is am amazing teacher who I felt forced me to really understand and apply the material. I know I have learned so much from this course and am confident due to his teaching style I will not forget the information learned. He spends SOO much time on his students. there are tons of videos he creates, they helped me a ton! He is worth it and cares!
I took this as a summer class. Decent lecturer but there's so much memorization about pathways. The midterm/final were a joke. They were so hard and too specific. I studied forever and barely anything I studied were on those exams. The videos he makes helps for the general ideas but not for the exam. Try to avoid, if you can't.. good luck.
hard class but not for those who work and want to learn. life is not wrote memorization, it is critical thinking, it is being given a knowledge set and being forced to apply it to something new, and that is exactly what this class requires of its students. best teacher i have ever had, will put effort into you if you put effort into class
Mark expects you to use every single resource he gives you, and will test on the TINIEST details. Incredibly hard to follow during lecture. Entertaining lectures, but only if you aren't furiously trying to take notes from 3 slides ago. Try to take this course over the summer, with a different prof. I'm told it's way easier.
Mark is all over the place in lecture, which is all clicker Q's. No text book, has you print out all the material which is only half filled out so that you can complete the graphs and "cartoons", which he rarely provides the info for. So you are left with half completed diagrams to study for tests. Good luck.
Everyone that whines about Carrier obviously didn't put in the work. Yeah -- it's probably the first hard science class that you've taken, and yeah you have to watch the videos, and read the lecture notes, and go to office hours, and do the homework, but it's not that hard to figure out what's going to be on the test. You get out what you put in.
Fantastic Prof! Bi212 is a hard class, but if you really apply yourself, work hard, and GO TO OFFICE HOURS, you will be successful! Mark has a big heart, and if you get to know him and genuinely work to understand big concepts, versus memorize facts, the odds will be in your favor!
Mark says you won't pass unless you go to his office hours which is true. There are lots of GE office hours to go to as well. However, mark talks like Yoda, asks clicker questions before teaching material, and his diagrams are terrible. He also doesn't use textbook or posts slides. Don't take him unless you have time to put into class
Mark is one of the best professors I've had so far. He cares a lot about his class and the students. A lot of students like to make this class seem impossible, but it's not. As long as you put in the work and GO TO OFFICE HOURS you'll do great in the class. There are so many resources available it's up to you to utilize them.
Mark is the best professor I've had the University of Oregon, I struggled In the class up until the midterm then I went to every single office hours for the last 5 weeks and he was so devoted to his students he helped me and challenged me to get the grade I wanted. He truly cares for his students and his work. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS AND HW SESSIONS
BI 212 isn't worth attending lectures for. The entire material is in Mark's online videos and each of them every lecture add up to 40 additional minutes of listening. The man forces everyone to go to lecture by forcing clicker questions down our throats and expects everyone to know the answer before teaching the material. This man is a sadist.
Mark gets a bad reputation for his sense of humor and grading style but he cares so much about his students. He is one of my favorite teachers. As long as you GO TO OFFICE HOURS, you should do well in the class. He holds 5 hours of office hours a day and there are additional TA office hours. Tests are hard but he curves the class a lot.
Mark is an amazing teacher! Any negative reviews on here are from people who didn't want to put in any effort in the class. But Mark is always there for his students and is more passionate about learning than any teacher I've ever had before.
I absolutely loved this class. Not going to lie, it can be difficult, but Mark is so helpful and always willing to give you a pointer. He's by far the most dedicated professor I've had at the UofO
I went into 212 thinking it would be a nightmare but I realized how wrong these reviews are. The class is hard if you don't try. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!! This is the best I've done in a science course so far because you're forced to ask for help from TAs/Mark. Everyone is really caring and wants to help. Mark is hilarious sometimes. Just do your best!!
If you do take this class, go to office hours, TAKE CLASS ENCORE, form study groups and ALWAYS watch his videos! His train of thought jumps all over the place. He counts down from 5 for each clicker and tells us we aren't trying when no one knows the answer. He LEFT during an office hour because there were so many people there. Good luck.
As a current senior, looking back on my sophomore year in his class was a joke. I've taken both ochem and biochem and aced those classes. This is the only class I've ever received a C in. Carrier makes everything unnecessarily difficult and office hours are often jam-packed if you don't get there early. Best tip: make friends & join study groups!
Honestly why put yourself through this class when you can take it over the summer and learn the same stuff but get a better grade? That's what my cousin who just entered med school said after I told him how hard this class is. He said he heard horror stories so he took it over the summer, clearly did not impact his ability on the MCAT.
This course is a general biology course, and lower division. Yet, Mark makes the class harder than it has to be by expecting you to have mastered the material before coming to class, then gets mad at us when we under-perform on tests/clickers. I'm taking 13 upper division credits as well, and his class is just not manageable with that in mind.
Mark is a cool guy, but makes the class so much harder than it needs to be. No matter how much I studied or how many office hours I went to, it was never enough to get good grades on quizzes/tests. Sure, it's more than just memorizing, but Mark's quizzes/tests feel designed to trick you. He cares, but doesn't do a great job of showing it.
By far my favorite professor from my freshman year at UO. Both very knowledgable about the material he teaches and able to explain it to students in digestible segments.
Mark is very intelligent and wants his students to do well in the class. I appreciated his enthusiasm for biology. However, his lectures were hard to follow along sometimes and the exams were challenging. Going to office hours and spending a lot of time studying are necessary for you to do good on the quizzes and exams.
It's an easy A if you get a binder for class and stay organized. Go to office hours before the day of the exams and quizzes because they get packed fast on quiz and exam Friday's. Sit up front and ask questions. He sometimes hands out exam points for questions asked and if he asks questions he'll give out points.
Mark's lectures can be a little intimidating, because he moves fast, asks clicker questions faster, and jumps between plants and animals a lot. That said, none of the concepts he's trying to get across are super tricky, it's just a matter of watching all his videos and running some practice test problems.
This is a tough class, but Dr. Carrier really cares about his students and wants you to succeed. The material is difficult, but he posts helpful videos to explain the topics as well as tons of practice problems. Office hours and/or Encore are crucial for this class, and having the time to focus on class will really help your grade.
This class was on Zoom, but Dr. Carrier worked so hard to deliver the material in an online format. Go to office hours EVERY WEEK and I highly suggest signing up for Class Encore. The more places to study and get help for this class, the better. This is a tough class, but Dr. Carrier is very caring, wants you to succeed, and is hilarious!
I heard a lot of bad things about this class, and it was definitely hard and took a lot of work, but Mark honestly cares about his students so much. Go to his office hours a lot, and you'll be fine. Every single homework and test has 10-20 points of extra credit so you can miss 25% of the questions and still get a 90 on his tests.
Took the class online in Spring 2020. hardest class ever. I went to tons of office hours and spent hours studying and concept mapping outside of class but the class is way harder than it needs to be. Getting COVID might have been a better use of time. My mans knew we were all struggling and refused to slow down the pace of the course until week 8:(
I'm a bio major so I already love this subject, but I've never studied it in this way. Mark doesn't follow a textbook, so his method of teaching is super inventive and I love how the concepts are tied together so seamlessly. This is the best class I've ever taken, and I think the level of challenge is just right for the remote format.
Online teaching clearly isn't Mark's thing. Compared to the professors of Bio 211, he is clearly behind in terms of making an online class effective. His online lectures move all over the place and teach you very little information, almost all teaching is done by GE's in live lectures. By the time you know the info, you've already missed points.
Compared to other professors in his own department, Mark Carrier is clearly a step behind when it comes to teaching his class in an online format. As this class is done without the guide of a textbook, there are no outside sources one can use to reinforce what they've learned in class. He wonders why students attempt to cheat. He should look inward
Dr. Carrier is clearly a smart guy, but his lectures are extremely disorganized and he doesn't know how to use technology. He isn't good at providing the basics of a topic before jumping into more complicated examples. Almost all the teaching is done by the TAs, definitely go to their office hours and do your homework on time.
He clearly isn't up to the task of changing his course to a format of online learning unlike so many of his colleagues in the Biology department.
Awful online class. Professor Carrier does not use a textbook and structures the class how he sees fit-- it is incredibly unorganized with lectures jumping between topics (many of which he later says are irrelevant). I strongly discourage students from taking Professor Carrier's classes.
Horrible teacher that makes biology so much harder than it should be. First off, we dont even have a textbook to study therefore we pretty much have to rely on Mark who is responsible for all the material taught in the class. I shouldnt go to EVERY office hour to pass a class that I paid thousands of dollars for to learn during lectures.
This was the worst class I have ever taken & the worst professors I've ever had. Mark is the most unreasonable person & he refused to listen to student's concerns about the class setup. He only used videos he made years ago to get out of actually teaching during COVID. After the quiz (the average was a low C) he blamed the TAs & students.
Worst prof I have ever had. There is no textbook we can look to, the only way to learn is from pre-recorded video lectures, which are not helpful. He clearly was never educated on how to teach and is very ignorant to those who suggest good changes. Take this class at Lane CC if you have to, sad that I have to pay thousands for this horrible class.
Not accommodating at all to students. Doesn't have a textbook to offer, we're forced to learn through videos, which isn't helpful if you learn best by reading.
Terrible lectures. No textbook to read and learn from. I only learn from the GEs or TAs.
He refuses to actually teach us like he does not explain anything in his lectures. Or even worse he will ask a question on topic that isn't even going to be taught until the following week. I haven't learned a single thing from this class. I got an A+ in BI211 and I usually love bio but he has made me hate this class. It's worse than ochem!!!
I have seen a lot of STEM professors in my time and Prof. Carrier is BY FAR the worst I have ever encountered. ZoomU has not treated him well. His lectures are not conducive to learning and entirely rely on other undergrads, there isn't a textbook, content is entirely random. AVOID HIM. He is unreasonable and does not listen to students nor care.
If you don't have to take this class, don't. He clearly cannot adapt to the online format even though he expects the students to. There is no textbook so the class is extremely confusing and he jumps from animals to plants seemingly every lesson. His TAs and lab assistants save the class, go to their office hours if you can.
the worst professor at UO. You may think I'm kidding and take this class thinking that you can do better but your hubris will strike you down. Actually, just Marky boy will.
recent reviews are HARSH, Carrier is a TOUGH professor, he wants you to work hard and learn to APPLY the concepts of the material not just memorize. yes, it's HARD and it harder online, BUT learning HOW to learn tough biological concepts is going to be useful in harder classes. He provides help but won't hand you a grade. Understand that
Mark records distance lectures, concept videos, hosts live zoom sessions w practice problems, posts complete lecture notes, and has office hours nearly everydayin addition to the dozens of office hours from the TA/GEs. He is a tough professor, but he cares and wants everyone to succeed. I also suggest doing encore bc its super helpful.
Not a class that's set up for most people's learning styles. I learn by reading best, and there is no option for that because there's no textbook or anything other than videos. He also doesn't take suggestions or constructive criticism, gets offended by it and blames everyone else. He's probably a smart, nice guy, just not a good teacher in my op.
I'm never taking a class taught by him again if I can help it. I have learned nothing from him. It's all done by the poor GE's trying to save this terrible class.
I honestly really liked Mark--it's clear he put a lot of effort into his "distance lecture" videos for online school, and a lot of thought into the way he organized his zoom lectures to be more student-involved. Plus, I just really got the feeling he actually cared about people. Definitely the most time-intensive class I've taken here, but good!
The only saving grace about this class was the GE's. Do not take this class with Mark. His exams are too hard, he doesn't listen to students and overall does not accommodate to anyone for anything. Save yourself the late nights and the tears, don't take Carrier's classes.
There has recently been a lot of really negative reviews, but this was not my experience at all. Yes the material is challenging, but Mark makes all of it clean. The students complaining are the ones that aren't attempting to apply the material and actually learn. just relying on memorization. If you use the resources he gives its an easy class.
love mark
Dr. Carrier is an amazing professor. People will complain and say he is too hard or unfair, but that is because he teaches you how to learn. This is a class where you apply knowledge rather than memorizing and spitting it back out. He is caring, kind, and passionate about his course. There is a large staff of wonderful undergrads to help with stuff
Mark is one of the best professors I have ever had. He makes you work it and put in the time to actually understand the material instead of just memorizing things, but he is very accessible and is always there to make sure that you succeed. Go to his office hours and take advantage of all of the TA office hours as well!! Great class!
Mark is the best professor I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. 212 was the first class that I struggled with in college, and it was not the last!! I am so proud of what I learned in this class, and I am saddened to see the horrible things students are writing about him on this page. They are grossly misinformed. Mark is actually amazing!
The class itself is tough but Mark gives lots of opportunities for extra credit and organizes class so you can fail a few tests and still get a decent class grade. Lectures and readings are dense and you need to take good notes but there are many extra resources provided and a large staff of TAs/BULAS/GEs who are there to help
It is a difficult class and difficult tests but his passion for biology is apparent, he does his best to provide materials for students.
Mark is nice man who is passionate about biology. That said, he's proven to be less than competent when it comes to teaching the material. The topics are very easy if you put in the time to learn them. His main issue is that he rarely teaches the basics of a topic before jumping to tougher examples. Not conducive to learning. Respectfully, 0.5/10
I struggled to keep up with this class in an online environment. It is crucial to be fully present from day one. Overall, Mark is obviously passionate about what he does. The organization of the online material is overwhelmingbut in person, it must be fun. I learned a lot, but it was a real challenge. I feel more prepared for future bio classes.
Mark is obviously serious about biology, but that's not reflected AT ALL in his teaching. Intense homework (7+ hrs) in the same week as quizzes & midterms is not a feasible expectation for any student. Doesn't have a textbook & 30+ TA's / GEs except no one knows the material! Lectures aren't helpful & distance lectures that are treated as quizzes.
Here is my honest opinion w/out the angry 1.0 reviews and fake TA 5.0 reviews. Its clear Mark is passionate about Bio. However, his teaching style needs adjustment to the online format. There is no textbook so its hard to follow the material at times, however, he does provide a lot of Office hours, helpful videos, lecture notes, and practice exams
Mark is a great man but his class was literally the worst. The lectures and readings are the most important. His tests are anything but straightforward. The homework is unbearably hard. Even if you give everything you got and go to every office hours it still won't be enough.
BI212 is definitely one of the more challenging stem classes at UO. If you want to succeed in the class, you have to be willing to put in the work. Mark really cares about his students, and WILL GLADLY HELP IF YOU SEEK HIS HELP. Go to office hours, and do everything you can to fully understand the material.
Ok this class is something.... his class requires a lot of hard work and critical thinking. I know this class was difficult this term, the infrastructure of the class is questionable, and there's just too much work. I beg students to take their time with the material, ask peers for help, and support each other. Organize, take notes, and be strong.
I managed to get an A in this class without ever attending office hours or the zoom class times. People who are leaving reviews stating that this class is ridiculously hard will fail to be successful throughout later school and work with that mindset. This class is nowhere near impossible. Mark gives great lectures and sets you up for success!
I finished this class with over 100%, but that doesn't tell the whole story. It's absolutely criminal that this course is listed as 4 credits. You will spend more time on this class than any of your others. The reviews will tell you it ranges from the best class ever to a straight up waste of money, but the truth is, it's somewhere in the middle.
Mark's actions in winter term this year were questionable at best. This was a hard class that dominated my time for a not very good grade. Mark is not willing to help most of the time and will provide snark. I frankly have a personal vendetta against this class at this point. Avoid if possible. Also? The TA's have been giving the good reviews.
This is not an easy class if you do not put time into it. I attended Mark's office hours every morning and I credit that to my success in the class. He helped me get out of my comfort zone and participate in group discussions which, in the end, helped me learn and understand the content even better.
Mark is clearly all about biology, but it is not reflected in any way in his teaching. He refused to change his ways when the whole class asked. Intense homework 7+ hrs in the same week as quizzes & midterms. No textbook & 30+ TA's yet no one knows the material! Lectures often leave material out & are treated as quizzes. His organization was awful.
hard but good class
Mark is a really nice teacher but does not explain things very concisely. Definitely make friends with the TAs and write notes on everything. He does give lots of opportunities for extra credit but the exams can be hard even if you study
Mark Carrier is the worst professor that I have ever had across all of my years of schooling. I dont even know where to start. Mark cannot explain a simple concept if his life depended on it. This is an intro biology class yet he talks to the class like we have been taking biology for years.
He uses very specific examples of certain processes yet fails to explain the basic concept of things. His tests are impossible and the wording is very confusing. When confronted about the ridiculousness of the tests he displays an arrogant and pompous attitude. In my class the average for both of the midterms was an F.
Question: What is the number one thing a teacher should be able to do? Answer: explain concepts easily and clearly. This teacher can not explain easy concepts. His explanations are overly complicated. I had to seek help from another professor who agreed that Carriers explanations were confusing. Stay away at all cost.
MARK CARRIER IS THE LITERAL WORST. His lectures are extremely disorganized and he is zero help if you ask questions and he does not care. Definitely get to know the TAs and get ready to work your butt off. BI 212 is not supposed to make you want to drop out of school and die, but leave it to Mark Carrier to rise to the challenge.
He seems to know a lot about the topic but his lectures are near impossible to understand. He makes no sense. He bounces around topics and doesnt go into enough detail on stuff. This class is hard on its own but he makes it harder. you wont pass unless you go to tutoring or class encore. or youre a genius bc this class is insane
Mark is literally the WORST teacher. YOU DON'T LEARN OR EVER HAVE ANY IDEA OF WHAT'S GOING ON. His office hours are at 7 AM and he recommended that if we skip we should skip lectures instead of office hours. NO organization and no help. Become best friends with your TA's or take it at Lane. You also never know your grade during the course.
Mark's the worst. There's no structure to his lectures- he will leave things out of his lecture notes and just put, "I talked about this in class". If he doesn't cover something in lecture, it goes on a quiz or HW. He lied about our 1st exam having textboxes to show work for partial credit & then muted the grade. Grades hidden since beg. of term.
He's a very tough grader and not very understanding when it comes to late work or making things up. He's a nice person and super funny but also makes lectures super confusing. This class makes me feel stupid
Carrier is by far the hardest professor I've had here so far. He's hard to reach outside of class, makes you feel dumb for not knowing certain concepts, lectures are beyond confusing, he won't ever let you make up assignments or tests if you miss them AND you even let him know, jumps around to random topics in class, etc. overall terrible class.
I'm gonna be fair to mark (there are a lot of angry 1 star reviews that I think are a liiitle bit misguided) and say that the class's content is definitely interesting and I DO think that going through this behemoth of a class turns you into a better student. HOWEVER, I don't like that he's often very snarky to students and feels out of touch.
I agree with the 3.0 review below. I think Mark is cursed with teaching a difficult class, but his teaching style is abnormal. Lectures feel pointless 90% of the time, but he makes them required through Clickers. I learned more from pre-lecture vids. Exams are very difficult and poorly worded sometimes which is annoying. Not very empathetic.
You might think the worst part of this class are the strangely worded exam questions, his attitude towards students, or maybe even just the structure of the curriculum. You would be misguided. The absolute worst part are the cult-like flock of undergrad TAs who kiss this man's ass for either a letter of rec or as a symptom of Stockholm syndrome
Mark is an inconsiderate teacher who doesn't care about his students success. The class is extremely difficult, the lectures make no sense and the tests are weirdly structured and very difficult. I did all of the pre lectures and assignments and still didn't learn anything.
Prof. Carrier has the most erratic teaching style I have ever witnessed here at UO. He moves from topic to topic with concerning speed and blatant disregard for any confusion. Exams are very difficult and poorly worded, and class averages are consistently 50% or below. Attendance is mandatory but most of the learning will happen outside of class.
mark is the worst professor i have EVER had. the average on all our tests is 50%. We all failed the first two midterms, so took them again online the following monday, with a 24 hour notice. it was unlimited time and open book and we all still failed. he tests on things not taught, he does not explain anything to the extent he does test on.
The people giving 1.0 ratings are the ones who will fold later on in med school. Don't listen to them. If you are a good student who cares about your grade and is willing to go the extra mile you will be just fine. I am not happy with my grade but Mark really does care and he is always super kind in office hours.
The content of this class is interesting when you get it. Unfortunately, this seldom happens because the teaching process is unbearable. Lectures are unfruitful and hard to follow, prof. does not provide slides, and info in post lecture notes is intentionally obscured. He gives overly complex examples and makes you extrapolate the important ideas.
To be fair, this class is not all that bad. However, it takes such an excessive amount of time that I spent more time on it than my other 12 credits that I'm taking - COMBINED. Mark is kind but I feel like you should be able to realize that something needs to change when the average on both midterms is a 50 or lower.
To be honest, I am a very hardworking and dedicated student. This class was phenomenally ridiculous. Mark’s teaching was completely unacceptable. The average test scores were a 50% or lower and quite frankly, you will hate your life during the duration of the term if you are in this class.
His lecture videos were somewhat informational, however his pre and post lectures slides were just terrible. Information was splattered everywhere. The average quiz and midterm scores were always below a 50%. The structures of his test and quizzes are completely irrational, structure of test alone make them harder than they should be. Needs change.
I watched all pre-lecture videos, went to office hours, class encore, and yet nothing could compensate for how terrible of a teacher he was. SO disorganized, ignorant, and rude, I've never had a teacher as bad as him and it shows because test averages were always
Mark carrier smells bad
The people saying that struggling in this class is equivalent to failing med school need a serious beatdown back to reality. The content of this class is not the issue; it's the professor who is teaching it. Lectures are ridiculously disorganized. Horrible exam averages, impossible exams, and bad support/prep. Retire PLEASE.
350 words is not enough to describe the class. Most people giving 1.0 reviews are bitter that they are the ones getting weeded out. However, the content is extremely difficult and his teaching style is very erratic/incompatible with the material so you definitely have to put in excessive amounts of time outside of class to learn it.
Mark Carrier is incredibly disorganized and unable to follow. There was no textbook so all that we had to go off of was the incoherent in-class ramblings, mandatory self-tests that didn’t match with what was taught, and bizarre lecture videos with his pet bird in the background (no shade on the bird). He was the worst professor I’ve had at UO.
Mark's lectures are EXTREMELY disorganized and the pre-lecture videos often conflicted with the material that was lectured upon in class. I spent numerous hours in TA/GE office hours and Encore trying to understand the confusing and conflicting points that he would make during class. I'm grateful to have completed this class, but it was difficult.
This class was very difficult with somewhat advanced content, but I really like Mark. The lectures were very disorganized and the way in which the content was presented made it very challenging to learn during lecture. The tests were challenging, but I appreciated that there was an opportunity to retake them online, with the opportunity to get a B.
Mark is a funny guy, but not the best professor. He has office hours almost every day from 7-10am, which is nice, and I would recommend going to them as much as possible. The lectures are really confusing and his content is kind of all over the place. The best way to succeed in this class is joining encore and watching the prelec vids.
The way he teaches and the high amount of difficult material makes it challenging to learn during lecture. Most of my learning was during office hours outside of class time. The TAs/GEs are incredibly helpful, and by going to office hours/putting in a lot of time outside of class you will succeed. Most students don't have that kind of time, though.
Lectures are horrible so you basically have to rely on office hours and encore. Expect to take a massive amount of time out of your week for this class. His exams are very hard with no notes allowed.
Worst professor. Test averages were 50%. From my understanding, he may just curve the grades at the end of the quarter so that he doesn't look like a bad professor by failing almost all his students. He never explains the topic he's going to lecture about and all over the place. Quizzes, homework, and tests are impossible even with good notes.
Very disorganized class and teacher. That's what made the class difficult. He didn't want to tell us/explain answers to clicker questions (even when most of the class got them wrong). His explanations were not clear or understandable either. Going to office hours (Adriana's) helped a lot more than he ever did.
Mark seems like a nice guy, but his lectures were very hard to pay attention to because so much information is covered and he doesn't explain iClicker questions. Exam content is often not covered in the review. He also locks the grade calculator in Canvas so you can't tell what grade you have unless you calculate it yourself.
Mark's lectures are at best hard to follow, and at worst impossible to learn from. To pass this class, you have to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to teach yourself. Half of lecture is super fast clicker questions with little explanation, and I would go on if there wasn't a character limit. I'd say avoid this class if it wasn't required.
worst teacher around. Never handed any tests back and refused to point out what I got wrong.
Mark's lecture notes are incoherent, unorganized and make absolutely zero sense. The amount of time he expects you to spend learning outside of class is absurd considering his lectures are crap. Very well read and up to date on research but extremely out of touch with his students.
People on here berate Mark too much. Although his class was quite hard and a bit unorganized, it was still possible to do well. I never attended anyones office hours like people say you need to and still did well in the class. The best resource is the videos he posts to watch before each lecture. If you watch these videos and study you'll do fine.
Mark Carrier is an awful professor and a worse human being. It's clear that he has a distain for students, which is reflected in his tests and lectures. There was no textbook so all we had access to were his borderline incoherent PDFs. His tests often asked about material that hadn't been touched on for more than one minute or not at all.
His numerous TAs must be the few positive reviews because every single person I spoke to in class was super confused and frustrated. Messy slides, misses entire topics (some of which show up on tests) and expects you to learn all material before coming to class for heavily weighted, graded clicker questions! Lecture is for learning, not testing!
Most of Mark's slides are drawing he did himself, they're messy and hard to understand. He doesn't teach you the basics of topics, he just expects you to figure it out yourself. One lecture, he showed a slide for barely 5 seconds. The whole lecture asked him to go back but he refused and said "it's better if you figure it out on your own."
Bio212 is a very tough class. Mark is not always the best in lecture because he can go off on tangents or move quickly. However, his lecture notes posted online are extremely thorough and he takes his time to work with students in office hours. You have to be willing to put the time and effort into this class to be successful.
Mark is probably one of the most disorganized and unclear professors I have ever had. The pre-lecture videos are unclear, the ones made by TA's are much better. Topics mentioned on one slide in lecture would show up on the midterm. Teaching yourself a lot of the content and going to TA office hours are a requirement to do well in the course.
Mark is a good enough guy but his lecture videos are relatively incoherent and slow. Content on tests is derived from whatever he pleases, often only mentioned once. There's no textbook, so content structure is pretty much nonexistent. Go to office hours and find a study group.Take lighter courses with this one; it'll require a lot of your time.
I took this class spring of 2022. BI212 is definitely a weed-out class for the biology program at UO. In order to succeed in the class you really have to drill ALL of the content in. Mark cares about students succeeding if they put in the effort to learn. Go to office hours. Watch the videos. It's a very self-taught class but anyone can succeed.
Anyone can theoretically do well in this class, but depending on your learning style, success may depend on investing time you just don't have. It's a shame because I enjoyed the class and I think Mark is a great professor. The course is just not accessible to everyone, and I don't think it's supposed to be, unfortunately (see "weed-out" comments)
Never had such a hard time trying to stay on topic during lecture before I came into this class. Will give you max 5 seconds to answer clickers, then gets disappointed if wrong. Never answered my questions when I went into office hours. Tests and quizzes are quite difficult. Be ready to teach yourself and study hard.
I hate this class and the way it is taught. By W5, I stopped taking notes and only answered the clickers because I RARELY went back to look at my notes because of their unhelpfulness. Learned more from TA's and people in the class then I ever did from Mark. Lectures literally don't make sense and are filled with rambles, expect to teach yourself.
Mark is a good man who is passionate about what he teaches. You will see lots of negative reviews because he goes fast in his lectures and you still need to learn it. This is by design, there is a lot of material and it will challenge you. Your time put into studying needs to actually do something. Consider this your first taste of med school.
Amazing TAs and good lecture summaries but lecture itself not useful and exam topics barely covered in class. Grading criteria could not be more unclear and no analytics ever provided so you cant compare to other students. Good guy tho
Mark genuinely explains nothing. His lectures are confusing and honestly not helpful. There are many outside resources including lecture videos, office hours, and class encore; all of which I recommend. The class is usually heavily curved.
Honestly, Marks lectures are confusing and not helpful. He explains difficult concepts poorly. There are many outside resources including lecture videos, office hours, and class encore; all of which I recommend. The class is usually heavily curved.
Mark is funny and a nice guy but his teaching style is not great. His lectures go on tangents all the time and his tests are nothing like what u learn in lecture. Study for everything weeks in advance and PLZ just go to office hours the TA's (not GEs) save ur grade and are so helpful. Be ready for a lot of time and work outside of class fs
very disappointed
Awful, awful man. His lectures are ridiculous, theres no organization. He has no sympathy or care for his students. Despite being in his office hours every week, he didn't give af when my family member died unexpectedly and I had to miss the funeral to take Marks precious exam. Glad I passed and never have to see this egotistical, selfish ass again
Mark was awful, disorganized lectures, stuff mentioned for 1 slide in lecture would show up in great detail on the test. The only way I did well in this class was the LA office hours. Don't let the overall rating fool you, Mark was not good in any capacity.
This class is challenging, quiz and midterm grades are 60 or below. He says there is no curve, but there definitely is based off the final grades people get compared to what they expected. Study EVERYTHING, there is no telling what will be on the test, so just know it all. It's going to be hard, but if you apply yourself it can be done.
Mark is a great professor. Although his lecture slides can be difficult to follow and he tends to ramble, he is one of the better professors I have had. He is easygoing and genuinely wants everyone to succeed. Class is challenging, but that can be expected. Doesn't seem to grade the final, exams and quizzes follow guides, but can be confusing.
Terrible teacher, unorganized lectures, and unclear grading. You don't know your real grade until the end of the term. Lectures are full of tangents and he makes unclear transitions between material. Must go to office hours and watch his lecture videos to make it through. Seems like a nice guy, but worst class I've taken here.
Its unfortunate that UOs biology department is so bad because having 4 general bio classes makes no sense on top of the horrible curricular and quality of them. There are easier ways to get people to truly learn on than create unnecessary stress. Mark is an objectively bad professor with objectively vague lectures and specific and trippy questions
The lectures and videos are unclear and disorganized, and it's hard to pick out important things to know. Definitely watch all the lecture videos before lecture, and if there are TA lecture videos for a topic, WATCH THOSE ESPECIALLY (they are way clearer). I haven't finished yet, but I've heard he grades based off of improvement, which is good.
While Mark seems like a nice enough guy, this class was incredibly difficult. Lecture is often spent covering very recent scientific material or speeding through iClicker questions and not on subjects that are on exams. Expected to know much more material than what Mark goes over during class. Encore and TA office hours are the only way I passed.
Love this guy tbh. He grades extremely tough but he's fair if you tell him why you think your answer is correct. If you can draw it, you'll get it right in the class most of the time.
This is one of very few difficult undergraduate courses available at UO. Mark will give you information and its up to you to understand it through the lecture notes or videos available on the topic. The class moves fast, if you don't show up every day actively ready to learn you will likely fail. I never went to office hours and still did great.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. He's a nice guy but does NOT know how to teach. Too many people fail every term but he never self-evaluates or changes anything about his course. I've been relearning material from this class and it really showed me that it really was just his teaching that made it bad. This class is a full-time job...
He is a nice enough guy but the worst teacher I've ever had. None of the topics connect there is no textbook, his lectures make zero sense and counting down from 5 for every clicker is ridiculous. His tests have horrible point distributions. His content doesn't change, I found quiz answers from over ten years ago, and any good reviews are his TAs
Makes BI212 difficult for no reason, refuses to use a textbook and teach concepts as they appear. Ambioguous test questions alongside unclear lectures makes me want to KMS! Thanks Mark
Awful just awful. I don't know how this guy is still allowed to teach. No clear curriculum the only way to pass is to go to office hours. Lecture notes are sloppy and hard to follow. He teaches you concepts but how to apply it to a problem. There is no textbook either so you have to follow his horrible notes. Makes the class harder than needs to be
Unclear lectures, sloppy notes, hard assignments. The only way to pass it to go to office hours. He teaches the most random things in lecture and expects you to know it right away. There isn't even a textbook so you have to learn through his curriculum which is awful. Don't be fooled most 5 star reviews are from his ta's.
Mark is a hilarious professor, however, due to his cryptic ramblings during lecture his ability to prepare you for his fairly difficult course load is lacking. His lecture notes are also genuinly useless as he often only shares vital information in clicker questions and does not include them in the notes on canvas. you MUST go to office hours daily
Funny guy but doesn't know how to teach. Lecture notes are useless and rarely have anything to do with the tests/hw and during lecture he tries to speedrun the slides, never takes the time to explain things coherently. Office hours mandatory if u want to pass. A gen bio class shouldn't be this difficult. Making me lose my love for biology
If ever there was a way to make students detest biology, it would be this class. BI212 has sucked out my entire soul. Lectures feel like thunderdome-style iClicker mayhem. Mark doesn't bother to teach the material or further your understanding of said material, he expects you to know everything. Encore, office hours, and tutoring are a must.
Lectures and notes are convoluted and disorganized. Goes on for an entire lecture about nonsense, expects everyone to know answer to a clicker in less than five seconds. No textbook for the course, extremely difficult to find information in a centralized place. 20 TAs do the work for him in terms of teaching which is why office hours are packed.
Curriculum is quite questionable. Shows many random, difficult concepts with an unorganized structure. Includes research papers with intent of students to improve critical thinking skills and interpretation of data. Fact is Mark you can't teach! Yapping about random topics and having students to go to Office Hours to learn is not the way.
Not it. Mark has one of the most unaccessible classes I have taken. He has no textbook. Meaning you will have to suffer through his incoherent lecture notes. His class is different from other Gen Bi 2 classes from other schools. Concepts covered in this course don't relate to those at all, and are more difficult than required.
350 words can't describe how awful this man is. A common trend between past classes is that the majority fail exams. Clearly he is doing something wrong. Maybe it's the fact that he hires 20 TA's to teach for him while he endulges in the suffering of those stressed out by his class. Did I mention the absurd scientific papers required too? Fire Him.
Mark is probably the worst professor I've ever had. His lectures are him clicking through slides while making incoherent mumbles and quiet words. Some of his slides even include a shakespear poem? He also has 20+ GE's and BULA's that arent allowed to help you with clicker or homework. Tests also have content not covered in class from new research?
Definitely a weed-out course, but I actually know Biology now. He needs better grading criteria and transparency with students, don't worry about your self-test/iclicker scores. Needs better lectures too, but I enjoyed learning the material he presented through the abundance of resources available
My experience with marks class was amazing. He prioritizes understanding instead of memorization, yes his tests are hard but the only way you will succeed in his class is if you attend TA/Mark office hours and show dedication. His lectures could use some work but his class will teach you how to think critically and form new effective study habits!
Silly guy who loves to teach biology. Office hours are fun and he just wants you to succeed. The class is hard and will require a lot of work and self motivation. Honestly, forget about grad/med school if you don't enjoy and do well in this course bc the structure and rigor is to help prepare for that. Use the resources he provides and have fun!
Mark is a terrible teacher who expects all his students to be at his level when solving problems. The few students who do excel in this course end up becoming brainwashed TAs who think he is the second coming. Overall, terrible lecture notes, hard to follow in class, tons of homework, I do not recommend it to my worst enemy
This class has legitimately made me depressed. Everyday I dread being in this course because of the workload, unclarity, and disorganization of information. The amount of stress caused by this has made my hair fall out. Mark is making me lose my love for biology with the way he presents his course. Going to office hours is the only way to pass.
Incoherent lecture notes, difficult concepts, combined with a ridiculous workload makes me want to KMS. Want help? Go to packed office hours where TA's gatekeep problem solutions and defend/praise Mark for a recommendation letter! Thanks for ruining my mental health, physical health, and future chances of grad school Mark!
Bad professor, and even worst human being. Is rude, and snarky to students who don't understand concepts immediately. Praises the few students who succeed in his course and promotes them to personal servants (TA's). Then TA's praise Mark for the benefits of a recommendation letter resulting in the few good reviews he has. Retire already
You can tell Mark really enjoys teaching this class but he is the worst professor I've ever experienced. Lecture notes are incomprehensible, curriculum is all over the place, no textbook. He rambles during lecture about god knows what making it hard to follow along if you're not an auditory learner. This class made me want to drop my bio major!
I was warned about how difficult this class was before I took it, and all of those warnings were correct. The information is all over the place and isn't the same content that is on the exams. Unless your naturally a quick learner, you NEED to go to office hours. I understood the concepts easier from having the TA's/other students teach me them.
His teaching style is awful. It makes it hard to understand/learn rather simple material, and lectures are all over the place with an insane amount of homework. He relies on his TAs to teach everyone the material he expects you to know after talking about it for 5 minutes, then testing you with rounds of graded clicker questions. HARD tests!
Mark's class was tough, but you'll succeed if you put in the work. It's good to understand the content before its discussed in lecture. He and the TAs are very helpful and you'll understand why an answer is right, not just what the right answer is. In the future, I would like if a textbook was provided, however.
Good luck
The worst professor with the worst, most condescending GE's. I almost failed this class because of how awful my lab GE was. No feedback from instructors, only a peer-review for a final paper that's worth 15% of your grade. Good luck trying to plead your case if you get an unfair grade, because Mark's goons will try to gaslight and demean you.
Maybe he was a good professor back in the day, but now, all he does is explain concepts poorly, give clicker questions, and then ask, "Why aren't you guys getting this?" when over half the class doesn't know the answer. It's incredible how convoluted the self-tests are and how hard it is to get a good score regardless of time or effort. Retire.
The amount of effort required for an A is unlike any upper division course I've ever seen, 300 and 400 level classes are infinitely easier. My social life is in shambles and my room is a mess. But hey, anything for that A right? I'm so tired of this. Please get me out of here. Something is going to happen if I keep on going like this. Good luck :))
Do not take Mark Carrier. Take BI212 online. Anything to get out of this class. Would not pass if it weren't for the GEs and extra hours I put in learning the material myself. Funny and accessible out of class, but an awful professor.
It's so weird how much he prides himself on failing people. Nice guy but he 100% needs to retire. Also the TA's are such kiss-ups for Mark, they act like he's a god or something and it's actually so weird. Easy concepts to learn but his tests actually make u wanna die because he loves to try and trick you on purpose.
Mark is a smart, funny, nice guy. Doesn't mean he's a good professor. No textbook, disorganized lectures, rapid fire clicker questions, condescending TAs, etc. Put in tons of extra work/went to encore and office hours and barely passed. His teaching style is just not accessible at all. Way more complicated than it needs to be for a 200-lvl class.
He's a fine person, but his lectures are a joke 2.8/5 feels a little high for someone I can't stand more than 2 classes from. Someone please remind him students spend money and time on university, because it seems like he's forgotten that
You get out of it what you put into it. It's a weed-out class, but in no circumstance would I deem this class unjust. There are over 20+ office hours and 20+ TAs because Mark knows all students learn differently. The concepts taught are mind-opening, and giving this class effort and diligence will pay off immensely. Don't be soft and lock in.
This class requires a lot of effort, but engaging with the material and utilizing resources like unstuckstudy ai can really pay off. The concepts are interesting, and the professor's specific teaching style, though challenging, is worthwhile if you put in the work.
BIO212 was an insane class. it's a weed out class so expect to get weeded out. you won't succeed unless you give everything and DO NOT expect to get an A off the bat. I was failing the class the first five weeks n managed to pull it up to an A before the final by taking encore and going to GE help hours. There's a lot of extra credit on tests tho
Mark's class was the most difficult 200 level class I took. The exams are worded very confusing and are worth most of the grade. If you have a job/take any other classes, you won't get an A in this class. He expects you to put all fo your energy into this class. Way too demanding for an lower-division class, best you can do is go to office hours.
He does not explain things. You NEED to go to the review sessions to survive.
This is the hardest class here, but Mark is the most knowledgeable professor here I've met. It is a weed out class so expect to feel the pressure. He is caring though and seriously wants to help, but only if you are willing to put the work in as well. He gives so much extra material and is always having office hours of willing to respond.
Worst teacher I've ever had.
Took his class a year ago and decided to come back and give a reflective review of how awful this class is. I am now a business major. I switched in my fourth year and 90% of the reason was because of Mark. I now struggle to take tests because I am expecting the professor to try and trick me fully because of this class. Good luck.
I'm not done with the class but I'm done with life because of it (not even two weeks in). All the bad reviews are spot on.
Mark is by far the worst teacher at the university. His lectures are horrible and he contradicts himself between the lecture videos and the answers on tests and homework. DO NOT take this class unless you need it to graduate. Expect to be putting in at least 3-4 hours per day of work and studying on this one class alone.
This is bad. Do NOT do it. Save yourself please I would rather be at this school for 3 more years than be in this class.
No textbook and no provided resources to learn the material. He does an awful job at explaining topics, and tests on things he does not teach. He is by far the worst professor I have ever had in my school experience ever including K-12. Do not take this professor if you want to learn.
This professor is truly the worst teacher I have had in my life. I did well in this class in spite of him, not because of him. If you are forced to take one of his classes my advice is to go to as many office hours as possible. Even something from a single slide he breezes over could be a huge question on the final.
Horrible teacher. His lectures are the worst and he doesn't care for his students. He tells you that you will do well i you just go to office hours and watch the videos and that is not true. He is the worst teacher I have ever had.
If you HAVE to take this course with him as your professor, do it during a term where you know you won't have a busy schedule. The content is extremely confusing and the course layout is hard to follow so office hours are incredibly necessary.
Get ready to cry for 10 weeks straight. Mark is the worst professor I have ever had and does not care about his students. Seriously wondering how he's still employed at this University. Ruined science for me and made me question my entire life goals. Avoid taking this with Mark and go to office hours with less students so you can get 1 on 1 help
I will say that I disliked Mark less after going to office hours regularly. He cares, but this class is just crazy. The term isn't over and he began this week by admitting that he should slow down b/c our midterm grades weren't the best. He joked earlier this term saying that if we all ace this class, he'd finally retire. Not very encouraging!
Mark was the WORST, and I mean WORST, professor I have ever had. He speaks so cryptically about the material he is supposed to be teaching us but instead poses everything as a weirdly worded question and never gives the answer. Passing this class will only be by the grace of god. I go to 8 office hours a week and do class encore; it's not enough.
Possibly the worst professor at the school. His lectures are a mess, canvas page is unorganized, and his quizzes and midterms DO NOT match what you learn in class at all. You have to be a genius to even get a B- in this class. Get ready for a ROUGH 11 weeks.
Mark is truly the funniest and sweetest guy and I love him. His lectures don't really make sense so you're going to be learning from pre-recorded videos and the TA's. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. If you wanna do well become his friend and abandon your social life. Content is super interesting but get ready to cry nonstop bc of the harsh grading.
Maybe one of the nicest teachers I've ever had the pleasure to work with. The first few weeks I didn't like him, but I quickly realized just how great he was. His classes are not easy, and he is often disrespected for it. His lectures aren't ideal, and he is definitely a cryptic speaker, but if you study you're fine. Office hours are a must.
Mark has been teaching this class for years, so he's pretty set in his ways. With that said, it is a very difficult course meant to weed out students from upper biology/natural sciences tract. Basic participation, like any other class, is not enough-- office hours, Encore sessions, and study buddies are the key to success in this class. Good luck!
Mark is truly an amazing person. He is so funny, but his class... oh man. This class was by far the hardest class that I have taken here. The lectures are confusing and he gives you 5 seconds to answer the clicker questions. SIGN UP FOR ENCORE!! The GE's and BULAS helped way more than mark. Also, his office hours are extremely helpful.
Mark is lovely, but I think he expects too much of his students sometimes. He doesn't explain his reasoning and his lectures can be ridiculously heavy on material. Your grade will be determined on how many hours and tears you're willing to put into the course. Go to office hours, sign up for encore, and God Speed.
Assignments every day keep you on top of things, but it's difficult to manage with other courses. Don't take other hard classes at the same time
Yes, the rumors are true. This class is incredibly difficult. However, Mark is incredibly caring and he puts so much effort into creating an environment for you to thrive and learn. How well you do in the class will be determined by how much effort you're willing to put in. I have learned more in this one class than I have in any other before.
TAs/BULAs office hours are very helpful, especially because half the class is usually there. These harsh reviews are probably from students who weren't really trying to get help outside of lecture. Mark holds office hours fairly often, and is very welcoming to questions. You can tell he definitely wants students to succeed, but it's just not easy.
Must say this is the class that made me reconsider studying bio. My social life is nonexistent. Hard to handle with other hard classes, 17 credits, and a job. Have never gone to office hours, but I think it's probably the best thing to do according to what many say. Read his post lecture notes and use the self tests to study! Be prepared to cry too
The best teachers I have ever had. Although his teaching style doesn't match everyone but as long as you go to office hours you are set. He himself has 12 hours of office hours a week and with over 20 TA's/ GE's there are plenty office hours. STUDY but he is more than willing to help if needed and there is always extra credit given on tests.
Carrier is a good man, but a bad professor. I went to encore, review sessions, prepared for tests weeks in advance and it's still not enough. Go to Lane or find an online, save yourself the tears. Half the time he makes no sense in lectures and the class itself is hard unless you naturally pick up and retain information. His videos are also no help
Honestly overhated. Yes, it's a tough class. Yes, he's a quirky old guy with questionable lectures. BUT, the reality is he is just trying to prepare you for the MCAT. He is very approachable and has TONS of resources (extra videos, helpful TA's, office hours, etc...) to help you succeed. Go to TA office hours/review sessions and DON'T GIVE UP!!
BIO212 was definitely an experience! It has become the hardest but most rewarding and most interesting class I've taken at this school. Mark cares about his students and wants all to succeed, and gives plentyyyy of resources to do so! Go to office hours and meet Mark, watch the supplemental videos before lecture, and take a deep breath.
This was an extremely intensive course so be prepared. It was tough to take in conjunction with other challenging courses, a job, and a family. There is an overabundance of resources which can be overwhelming but the answers are there you just have to dig. My main gripe was that he does not build intuition on core concepts early or often.
Mark was by far the WORST professor I have ever had at this university. He constantly contradicted himself in lectures and quizzes to the point where none of his material aligned correctly. His lectures were hard to follow and he rarely explained his hand made drawings. Good luck if you are taking this class with Mark, you are going to need it.
Very hard class. But if you cant handle it, you shouldn't try your luck at med school. He teaches you how to THINK like a doctor/researcher, not just what to do. This means theres a steep learning curve, but he gives you a million possible points to improve throughout the term. He really cares about your success, and theres so many TAs to help.
The best part of this class was its labs due to the amazing GE I had. Mark is insane. As a student who works parttime to afford school and takes multiple classes, he is a tough class. You have to do most of the learning yourself outside of class, TAs can help but tend to blame you for not understanding Marks secret language he calls learning.
He is the most confusing man and then gets mad when you don't understand what he is talking about. Good luck to all my part-timers out there with him, I'd switch to lane, I hear its SO much better than him.
"Kill me" has been in my drafts here since week 2- take this Pass/No Pass if you can, it will save your life and so much stress because nothing about the grading in this class is clear. The TA's gatekeep information they know is helpful unless you go to office hours; their office hours (professor too) are literally a popularity contest to them.
had multiple breakdowns 🐖🐖🐖💖💖💖 i don't understand anything Mark says and he kinda mumbles, but Mason and Justin saved me 🩰🩰🩰
hes not even that bad
Going to office hours will save your grade with all of the self tests. If you form a relationship with him and he knows who you are and sees that you're trying, he will curve your grade at the end. Lectures were not great but watching his videos were life saving. This class is very difficult, the hardest I've ever taken, but ultimately so rewarding
BI212 is as difficult as people say it is, but just going to office hours and studying is enough to get an A. Mark and his class have a bad reputation, but that reputation mostly comes from those who didn't expect the difficulty of a STEM class and did not want to put in the effort it requires and deserves.
Mark's class is hard but if you put in the work and go to office hours he is willing to help you. The class can be easy if you put in the work. Office hours is the best thing that will help you. If Mark sees that you are trying he will help your grade, he only cares about improvement.
Mark Carrier is an amazing teacher and the reputation he has is not deserved. He wants you to learn the content and genuinely cares about helping you learn the material. I would 100% take this class again and I think that everyone should take this class because it changed my view on studying. Go to office hours and start the class off strong.
Took this last term and got an A+. It's a tough class with lots of tests and material, but you just have to study a lot. Mark is actually super funny and approachable, people complain, but he holds students to a high standard. Med/dental school won't be easier. If you put in the effort, you'll do well. Great prof, lots of content.
Going into this class, I had heard it was one of the most difficult and most terrible classes at the university. Despite heading into the class extremely concerned, it turned out to be my favorite class. It is not an easy class, but Mark does an amazing job teaching and wishes to help you succeed. A must take class w/ a top notch professor.
The amount of material covered in this course can be overwhelming, so staying on top of things is key. Marc is a great teacher and is dedicated to helping his students succeed. He is very easy to reach outside of class, and has many office hours where he makes people feel welcome. He makes lectures interesting, and he is passionate on the subject.
I had Mark during Spring 2025 and I do believe I got minor PTSD from his class. I studied so incredibly hard... every. single. day. He's a nice guy, but a super hard grader. He does, however, grade on improvement which I do believe is the only reason I passed the class. Good luck to anyone who has to take his class-- you'll need it.
Mark's BI212 class is no joke, but if you put in the work you may even thrive. I found this to be the most gratifying class I have yet taken. Do biology every single day. Go to office hours. Mark is actually very approachable and a pretty fun guy. He loves seeing students ask questions and help one another. Time management is crucial. Good luck!
