Christensen is very insightful and makes what would normally be a very boring class, be interesting. I normally find World Civ boring but he's funny and makes the class interesting. The textbook isn't too bad, but he also makes you read another book as well (City of God) that is a little over 500 pages.
This class was an absolute nightmare! History is not my forte to begin with, and the professor could be pretty boring to listen to. I didn't know what I should focus on to prepare for his exams. He also makes you read a way long book in addition to the normal text just for the purpose of writing a 3-4page paper. I do not recommend this class!
I don't particularly enjoy history, so the lectures could get boring at times. Professor Christensen does treat his students right! He remembers what its like to be an undergrad and realizes that this isn't our only class. There is a considerable amount of reading, but no real homework. One paper, one midterm, weekly quiz, and the final.
Dr. Christensen is awesome. His research focuses on religion in Latin America and is able to answer basically any question you could bring up. His quizzes are pretty easy if you do the readings and come to class. The three papers that he has you write are very straightforward and not too difficult to write. Solid class.
I loved this class! He really cares about what he teaches and relates well to his students. He will take pauses during the lecture to make sure everyone writes down the info on the powerpoints (also serves as the study guide for the test but he won't post them so take notes!). Quizzes are weekly and easy as long as you go to class and do the readin
Three papers, a dozen or so quizzes, and participation points. Lectures are fun! He grades papers pretty generously, but the quizzes are hard. You have to really dig into the readings to do well. Our class quiz average was a 72% overall. If you go in and talk to him for advice on the papers, he'll tell you just what he wants and you'll get an A.
For HIST201 he was engaging and an entertaining teacher given the course material. Readings before every class and the essay book did take some time every night, but if you pay attention and do all that is asked, it's not hard to get a B. Doing the necessary hw was often better than all of it. Overall a great guy and a good route to fulfill the GE
I loved his lectures! He was really interesting and passionate. But there are only 2 exams, and its really hard to prepare for the first one, and it was a difficult test! By the final, you know what to expect, but I might be too late. Also there's a giant novel you have to read and write a report on and its worth a huge part of the grade.
He's a nice guy! I struggled in the beginning of the semester because I wasn't sure of what he wanted. But, I met with him, and after that did great in the class. You have a quiz every week, but at the end of the semester, you can make up any quiz for full points. The readings do take a long time, and the paper wasn't my favorite.
Prof Christensen was really easy to listen to in lectures and is obviously very smart and passionate about his field. Lots of reading and weekly quizzes, but if you ask the TA's you can make up any and all quizzes for full points at the end of the semester.
Professor Christensen is one of my favorite teachers at BYU! His lectures are amazing because he is HILARIOUS! He always gives you enough time to write down everything from his power points, which you should use to study for the weekly quizzes! Reading the textbook helps a lot as well. Definitely take this class from him!!!! :)
Worst class I've taken at BYU. If you're not a good test taker, don't take his class because 70% of your final grade is based on the midterms/final. If you don't frequently ask/answer questions, you won't get above a C on your participation grade, which is a significant portion of your final grade. Readings are long and quizzes are very specific.
He's really passionate about history and always accessible. I didn't like the class mostly because I wasn't interested in ancient history at all. There is a lot of textbook reading and in class quizzes every week. The first test was really hard to prepare for because he doesn't hold exam reviews and there is a ton of material.
Even if you love history like I do this class will still be boring. Every single day he just reads off his slides and expects you to write every little thing down. Not interesting at all. He is an extremely hard grader, especially for a GE class. Even if you talk to him about your grades he is very unforgiving. Doesnt seem to care about students
Chill, down to earth guy
Fantastic Class, great lecturer. Very consistent in the routine, you cover one chapter a week, have a reading quiz each week.
This class was my favorite for the semester. Despite what most people may say, the work load is not that hard. You read 20 pages a week split between 3 days (about 6.5). Once a week there is a 5 point quiz on the chapter. Other than that, there is one midterm (based completely on his slides) and one short essay on "The City of God" book. And final.
Life lessons, thats what you'll get out of this course. MLA is not good enough, Chicago style is business. Get ready to read. You have to make it clear you participated each class, that is how the participation grade goes. I would not take it again.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken at BYU. It is the only A- I have ever received. There are reading quizzes every week that are ridiculously hard. They are worth a good portion of your grade. I would read the chapter 3 times and take notes and would still only get a 3/5. If you are taking this class, take it from a different person!!!!!!!
I have LOVED having Professor Christensen. This class overall was my favorite at BYU. He is very clear in what he expect and to be honest he doesn't expect much. If you read and go to class the class will be a breeze. There is extra credit. He is understanding. I loved his lectures. PLEASE TAKE HIS CLASS- YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark is such a great guy! He tries his best to make lectures interesting and fun with cool references and funny jokes. There is a chapter of reading as well as a quiz each week which is doable. You have weekly reading quizzes, a midterm, paper, and final. Not too much work, I just studied my notes and the last pages of the chapter for quizzes.
Some people like his style, but not me. Youre graded on very few things: 20% in-class quizzes that are tough, 25% on a paper based on a long book reading, and 55% on two exams (midterm and final). Weekly quizzes were short answers and nit-picky from large readings, essay grading not fair, and tests had some short-essays. Take it from someone else.
Honestly, this class wasn't nearly as hard as some people made it out to be. His lectures are really fun and interesting, and if you pay attention and come to class you'll do well on the midterm and the final. Some of the weekly quizzes are tougher, but not anything crazy if you try on the readings. Overall, a really good professor!
He's chill, and this was an easy class for the Civ 1 GE. It's mostly lecture, but he's engaging and funny. Quizzes every Friday, one midterm, a final, and one paper (although he might be adding another). The TAs are almost always available, and he has office hours as well, but the TAs do the grading. *I finished this class online due to Covid19
Fairly easy quiz every week to test you on the weekly chapter, lots of extra credit. Midterm and final are entirely based on his slides. One long paper on City of God but as long as you use quotes and justify you will get a good grade. Nice guy and funny lectures.
By far the easiest Civ 1 professor. All you have to do is read a chapter and take a quiz each week. I always went to the TAs right before and they would give all the answers. The tests are so easy (1 midterm and 1 final not cumulative), and only have the most basic concepts from the lectures. The essay is really easy too (just 4 pages). SO FUNNY.
There is one chapter of reading per week which comes to about 10 pages a class max. He then lectures on the third. Quizzes each week require the reading, ask TA's questions from chapter to pass! Also 6/5 possible on each quiz. The test is from lecture notes: GO TO TA HOURS. The first paper wasn't bad, the book was shorter than it looks.
Prof. Christensen is a hilarious teacher. He tries to make history relatable and understandable. There is a quiz almost every week, 2 essays, 1 midterm and a final (that's it), so if you're not a good test taker, maybe rethink your choice. Besides that, Prof. Christensen is a really great and caring teacher. Totally recommend him.
Professor Christensen is very clear about how you'll be graded. He wants you to take careful notes of every slide in lectures, so if you miss a lecture make sure you get the notes from someone else. He's funny and engaging in his lectures, though not big on class participation. He's responsive to emails, but not very willing to be flexible.
Prof Christensen is a super great guy. He really cares about his students and is great during his lectures. There are weekly textbook readings, but if you read you will be fine. There are also two major papers, but he grades them super hard. I spent weeks on mine and only got a B. Like I said, he really cares about his subject and loves to teach it
Professor Christensen was a great guy and made this class very doable. There are quizzes every week, and you have to read the textbook if you want to pass them. Only 2 papers, a midterm, and a final, so you aren't graded on much. I would recommend taking this class for an easy history credit.
How can anyone find his class hard? He never tests you on specifics like dates and names and everyone I knew who skimmed through the textbook and paid attention to his lectures got an A. The weekly quizzes are insanely easy and the tests are not hard. I'm not a great writer and didn't do all the readings but he still gave me A- on the essays.
Prof. Christensen is an AMAZING teacher and really chill& understanding. there are 2 papers (which you will get a good grade if u actually read and try), 2 tests (are just on lecture material so write that down!) and chapter quizzes from the textbook. which can be hard but as long as you are decently prepared you should do ok. overall amazing class
Professor Christensen is a nice guy, he is really passionate about his work. He tells some nice stories in class. Study, study, study the notes for the tests!! He was a little unclear on what he wanted in the essays, but go to the TAs and ask them. The weekly quizzes were hard too, but go to the TAs for help. He isnt lenient on rounding points.
Great choice for a Civ 1 credit. To succeed do three things: 1. Read the chapters, especially the broad summary paragraphs 2. Write down the slides and know them well (don't worry about dates, there was never a question about dates) 3. Don't procrastinate the papers and use the TAs to make sure you did them right.
Nice guy. Makes a lot of jokes in class, and is very open-minded. Tests are directly from the reading and lectures, so they aren't too difficult. The two papers on the books we read were very difficult though, particularly as there wasn't a clear path to get a great grade on the papers. It's an overall easier class. Makes a good Gen-Ed.
If you want to be a high school history teacher, this class is for you. I think that less than 10/160 students answered a question all semester long. He is a super nice guy but the class was way too hard. Tests try to trick you with no review at all. Hours of reading weekly followed by 5 question weekly quizzes that decide your whole grade.
Listen up if you got B's in history in HS. This class will not be easy, or fun for you. And I tried hard to have a good attitude. I'm just giving to you straight. I did none of the readings, and my cousin did all of them, and we both got Bs - the exact same grade. He doesn't do extra credit or zoom chat. He's funny, though.
His lectures are entertaining and he recognizes that not everyone is a history major so he tries to make the content applicable to everyone. Makes it very clear how class will go and how to get an A. If you do the reading, the class should be no problem.
Difficult, but doable
Professor Christensen is in no way a terrible professor, however, his class was very difficult for me. There are about 2-3 hours of reading after each class and all of those hours of reading boil down into 5 questions that will make or break your grade each class period. I did not like the organization of his class, but he is very knowledgeable.
Prof. Christensen is a great dude. Super funny and really cares about his students. Quizzes every week are based off the readings (which aren't super long) so do them! Don't skip class because the exams are based totally off his slides. Overall great class, super eye-opening.
I've really enjoyed this class with Profesor Christensen. I loved his lectures and I feel like I have a greater understanding of the world. The only assignments are reading quizzes every week, a short paper, and a couple of tests. This class requires some work but if you try you'll definitely get a good grade. Overall I loved this class!
Professor Christensen is fricking awesome. I absolutely loved him and he was one of my fav profs. Really funny and engaging. Lots and lots of reading is required for this class. Entire semester revolves around 3 tests (one being about a book), a book report, and a weekly reading quiz. Not a lot of opportunities to save your grade on previous grades
For tests he doesn't give you any ways to focus your studies and says "study your notes" which is literally everything from the whole semester. He is vague for what he expects from us. His slides and lectures don't make sense and his teaching is all over the place, and we bounce from topic to topic and place to place. He is also very condescending
Prof. Christensen was super funny, but I seriously struggled in this class. Weekly reading quizzes are pretty easy, but the exams were rough. They're made directly from his slides, but there's a lot of broad information that's hard to remember. Super interesting content, hard to remember and hard to come back from a bad grade.
Interesting class, but what I liked most was Professor Christensens takes on life and spirituality. Do the reading, take notes, and you will be fine.
Professor Christensen is amazing, one of the best professors at BYU. His lectures are engaging and informative. He's a straight up guy and is very clear with his expectations which is so nice. There are weekly quizzes but if you come to class and do some reading, you'll be fine. Tests aren't too hard. And he's funny, so coming to class is worth it.
The lectures were pretty good for a GE history course, and the workload wasn't so bad either. However there were some administrative issues such as changing test dates without announcing first and not being flexible with in class quizzes. The tests are ABSURDLY specific, even though he claims to test us only on "major patterns" of history.
Very funny and charismatic guy. My favorite class last semester. Showing up to class is crucial, as he doesnt post his slides on learning suite. Some people dont like his 5 question quizzes, but if you come to class and skim over the end of the chapters, you should be set. Plus theres a bonus. The TAs keep the questions fairly straightforward.
He's absolutely hilarious! I loved him. Weekly (easy) quiz on the reading. He gives exact outlines for the notes and uses those same notes to write his tests. There is one big paper, which had a frustratingly vague rubric, but generous grading. Only downside is he won't post notes, so if you miss class, you have to find a friend.
Christensen is a good person and an ok teacher, but I think his course his set up poorly. Graded on very few things (weekly reading quizzes, 3 exams, 1 paper) so if you don't do great on 1 thing, you're screwed. TA's aren't very helpful, don't provide reviews or study guides for exams-makes it hard to study.
Professor Christensen is super funny, and is super knowledgeable about ancient America. Most of your grade is based on a few essays, and he expects some participation, but for the most part, the class is just discussions based on some fairly entertaining readings.
Honestly, he is a phenomenal teacher. I loved taking this class from him. He is sarcastic and hilarious, definitely making for good lectures. Weekly reading quizzes, but they are only 5 questions (with a bonus) and not that hard. If you try, you can definitely pull a good grade. HIGHLY recommend!!!
Absolutely loved Professor Christensen's class! He's a super funny and sarcastic guy and his lectures were funny and applicable. He does such a great job teaching usually boring subjects (at least for me). There are weekly quizzes but they aren't hard if you've read the material and studied for them. I will definitely take a class from him again!
If I could just go sit and listen to professor Christensen's lectures, then I would love this class! I feel like he didn't realize just how difficult his class is though. You're only graded on a couple things, and the weekly quizzes are very unpredictable which is challenging. He gives great lectures though.
Professor Christensen is a really great teacher. He made class fun and interesting, and he is amazingly sarcastic at times. He clearly loves history and loves teaching, and you can see that in the way he interacts with students. Honestly, the hardest part of this class was the reading and weekly reading quizzes, but that wasn't even that bad.
I loved this class. The content was interesting and Professor Christensen is really funny and really passionate. You have to make sure you read the textbook to do well on the weekly quizzes.
I got an A in every other class but this one was incredibly difficult. He downplays how hard and specific his tests are. The class is very unorganized on LS. He doesn't inform students of what's ahead. The lectures would be fine except that every Friday he has a 5 questions quiz that is incredibly specific and often haven't even been covered yet.
I did enjoy listening to his lectures but he did not set you up to succeed in the class. He gives quizzes once a week about random things from the textbook and gives you no warning on what they will be, so basically; I have read the textbook about three times in preparation for those quizzes. Go to study sessions with the TAs for quizzes and exams!
He actually seems like a super chill dude but the class is not really set up to help people succeed. Why? 1. There is nothing posted on LearningSuite so you need to look at the syllabus for everything 2. there are no study guides or things to give you extra help 3. both major midterms were placed only two weeks apart being open on a weekend only
Just kinda an average professor. No real feelings either way. Teaches history well, can be really funny at times, but nothing that will blow you away. Be prepared for weekly quizzes.
Good teacher with enjoyable lectures. Makes history interesting for sure, but his tests/quizzes are pretty specific with no study guide or studying advice other than "read the textbook". Some bigger readings/essays throughout the semester, but they are manageable. Pray you have a good TA and go to their office hours to review before tests.
Professor Christensen was a really good teacher. His course is really strait-forward and if you follow the syllabus you'll be fine. Super awesome experience.
Dr. Christensen's lectures are the best! He is hilarious and makes even the more bland parts of history at least mildly interesting. However his tests and weekly reading quizzes have no study guide or anything which can sometimes make it feel like you're going on a wild goose chase to internalize as much as you can before regurgitating it on a test
Prof Christensen was an amazing professor and I really learned a lot in his class but it was tough to get a good grade. The readings are boring and long and the quizzes test obscure facts. The TAs will save you in this class. Overall liked the lectures and would take again but be ready to study and be with the TAs for hours to do well on tests.
Prof Christensen is a great lecturer. He is straightforward about what he expects and stays consistent. Highly recommend!
LOVED his class and lectures! So good. He teaches history in a way that's super entertaining and applicable to everyone, and I felt that the workload wasn't too heavy. It's pretty doable. The ta's can be a bit rude but other than that I loved everything about his class!! don't miss an opportunity to take a class from him
He is the best professor ever.
That he is amazing
Professor Christensen made history so interesting. He taught boring parts of history in an entertaining way and always made connections to modern life. Not politically charged at all which was refreshing for the humanities department. Get to class a bit early and ask the TA's your questions. I wouldn't want to take history from anyone else.
Probably my favorite teacher ever here at BYU. Amazing lectures that help you find an interest in any section of history. Fairly light load, wasn't too overbearing with assignments. Fantastic teacher and wish i could take him again.
Professor Christensen is definitely the one to take for History 201. His lectures are great, and it's important you show up for them as the notes you take are directly reflective of the material on the weekly quizzes/midterm/final. Make sure to go to TA office hours for help on the weekly quizzes and reading responses!
He is a great teacher and makes history more entertaining than it should be. Funny jokester. The class consists mostly of textbook reading and a quiz each week. TAs are very helpful! He implemented a study guide for the test and it helped. The tests are not too hard if you study. Overall, I enjoyed my experience. I hate history, but I love Mark!
Professor Christensen is awesome! His lectures are very interesting and all the test information is right in the slides. There is a weekly chapter and quiz. Before the quizzes go to the TA lectures, they really helped!
Mark knows a lot about history and is a good teacher. I recommend his class. lots of reading and there are quizzes each week based on the reading. They aren't too difficult though if you do the work you can get a good score. There's a lecture everyday so it gets a little repetitive but he's good at keeping you engaged.
one of the best lecturers in byu for sure. class is a good mix of history, spirituality, humor, and learning. just watch out for weekly in-class quizzes that can get a little tricky, but if you go to the TA review hours, you'll be okay. best professor for history 201 credit!
Least fav professor I've had so far. The course would be great if you could just sit and learn, cuz the lectures are super interesting. However, he does not set you up to succeed. He tests on such obscure things, so you have to study every single bullet point of notes. Take from someone else if you just need it for a general credit. Not worth it.
This is my favorite professor because of how amazing his lectures are. The course isn't easy and I'm not into history but I am so glad I took it with him. In addition, I went to talk to him about two of my short essays that the TAs graded and he gave me a hundred percent on both so make sure you ask him questions. Overall amazing
Professor Christensen was amazing! His lectures always kept us engages despite their length. Weekly readings take about an hour or two out of class and material is quizzed. Take notes of his powerpoint slides, and study those notes, you will do fine. He has one midterm and another test over the book Popol Vuh. Six 1-2 page writing assignments
Dr. Christensen made the class super interesting and very achievable for non-history majors. There is much work to do and it's easy to pass.
Brother Christensen is such a great lecturer and his love for history is infectious. He always makes sure to interweave life lessons, too. That being said, watch out for the weekly quizzes, they can get brutal. You need to do the readings and show up to class, too. Overall, it wasn't an "easy" GE class but I wouldn't choose any other civ credit.
This class was life-changing & Prof. Christensen was amazing! He taught me how to become a better researcher & got me excited to write about history. Tough grader, but pushed me to new heights & encouraged me to work hard. You gotta be dedicated & stay on top of your work, but you will learn a lot. Permanently changed my perspective of history.
Professor Christensen is an incredible lecturer. He's genuinely really funny and has a ton of passion and knowledge about his course material. Be prepared to read a LOT because a large portion of your grade comes from reading quizzes. I would 110% take another one of his classes because I learned a TON and enjoyed it a lot.
There are 3 tests that are pretty difficult. There are 4 essays that are not too complicated. Weekly quizzes are pretty challenging. There are some options for extra credit. It is a challenging course but the easiest way to get this credit in my opinion. Christensen clearly loves history and makes the lecture entertaining.
I really liked this class! Honestly, it's only hard if you don't read, don't go to TA hours, and don't pay attention in lectures. If you do, those things you'll be fine. He is straightforward and open to meeting with you if you have any questions. TA hours also help a lot to understand important concepts. Overall, great professor!
Prof Christensen is the best professor at BYU. I hated this class at first because I don't love history, but overtime I really enjoyed the lectures. Everyone should have a chance to take from this man. He's too cool and loves his job. King Arthur the TA is graduating but go to the other TAs and they will help you SO MUCH! Lit lit lit class.
Dr. Christensen is hands down the best history teacher I have ever had. You can tell he truly loves his job and history. The tests, weekly quizzes, and four one page essays are easy. He has clear expectations for the class and has amazing lectures. If you pay attention during the lectures, take notes, and read the chapters, you'll get an A.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class because the lectures were interesting despite the topic being pretty boring. I felt that the tests were harshly graded and because they were a large part of the grade it brought my overall score down a lot. Make sure that if you take this course to do the readings and use Quizlet to study for the in-class quizzes.
Easily my favorite class. He's funny and makes good analogies to help the history connect. Felt like I was actually learning, not just getting a grade. Quizzes in class every week, go review with TAs beforehand and they'll be a breeze. Same with tests and papers. Textbook is helpful, read as much as you can, but if you miss a bit it's okay.
The lectures were boring and he doesn't let you take pics of the slides or post them. There is a textbook ch for each week and 1 quiz a week which are okay if you read. The tests are challenging and very detail focused so you have to study. The TA's were not helpful when writing the papers and were very particular. not my fav class but not bad.
Great teacher but does not prepare you for weekly quizzes or tests. Class grading is very test-heavy, and he is very specific about citations.
The way he structured his class just seemed unorthodox. Weekly quizzes that destroy your grade if you do bad on them, but didn't help your grade if you aced them. He claims his test questions aren't specific, and for the most part they aren't, but he'll often throw in an outofpocket question from some random chapter about something never discussed
Not a great teacher and test content is not covered in the lectures. His TAs are also the worst TAs I've ever worked with, they have no clue what they're doing and their grading is very inconsistent.
This class is pretty easy and straightforward, but the professor is a little insufferable. And never ask a question that you could conceivably find out the answer to on your own or he will make fun of you.
Dr Christensen was fantastic. His lectures are super interesting, coming from someone who doesn't care for history. A large part of the grade comes from weekly quizzes based on the readings and his lectures. They're pretty simple if you've come to class and do the reading. Only 1-2 hours of HW a week. Despite what some people say, he's awesome.
Tests are worth 55% of your grade which is atrocious especially since there is so much content in the class and you have no idea what you will be tested on. He provided study guides but they were actually worthless on the midterm and final. Take this class from someone else who knows how to set up a class for students success.
I enjoyed this class a lot. Professor Christensen is hilarious which makes his lectures both informative and entertaining. You have to read around 30 pages a week in order to do well on his weekly quizzes, but he offers extra credit and the exams are very easy if you attend all the lectures.
There is tons of content in the book, but he narrows it down to specific things to focus on. He could make this course much harder. Work with your TA and study throughout the semester and you will be fine. Send your writing to the TA for help. He is hilarious and you can learn so much from his lectures if you choose to. His BoM lecture is insane!
I loved this class! His lectures were incredibly enjoyable and he only puts what's on the slides on the test. There was an extra book we had to read on our own and had it's own separate test. The exams are super straightforward and more general. Also three short essays that are easy to ace. I did all of mine the night before and got 100%.
I loved having Christensen! His lectures were always great and he was very funny. You will have to read pretty much the entire textbook to get an A because he gives a lot of quizzes on it, but his lectures cover all of the material you need for the final.
Be prepared to do a lot of reading/studying for in-class quizzes, which were difficult (helpful study guides for midterms/final though). Aside from that, this professor is wonderful! I especially appreciated how he tied elements of the gospel to class content. I genuinely looked forward to each lecture! Not an easy class, but definitely worth it!
He is one of the best professors I have ever had. I loved him so much. If you can take anything from him then DO! I learned so much and everything he teaches is so helpful and logical. Made me want to switch to history and major in that. He made a class that could have sucked into one of my favorite college classes
Loved his lectures, has a dry, kinda sassy humor that makes his classes that much more entertaining. But there IS a ton of readings, with weekly quizzes (so pay attention.) Tests were difficult, but reasonably so. You'll read the Popul Vuh, but it's not bad. Overall, great teacher, I love going to his class
If you love history you'll probably enjoy his lectures. Lots of readings, with in class quizzes once a week. Study guide isn't really helpful for preparing for the tests. A couple papers on additional lengthy readings. Spent lots of time not knowing what I should be looking for.
An easyish class because the workload isn't that bad, but it's hard to get an A. I would spend a couple hours reading the entire chapter of the textbook, but it's hard know what's important to remember. So, I switched to listening to the podcast his TAs did (Dorm Room History on YouTube). About 45 minutes of listening and I understood more content.
I have despised history pretty much my whole life and I was not looking forward to this class in the slightest but Prof. Christensen really changed my opinion on history as a whole. His lectures are so interesting and his expectations for you are so clear and easily understood. Easily the best class I've taken at BYU.
PROTECT THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS. I WISH TO PERSONALLY THANK HIM. I NOW LOVE HISTORY BECAUSE OF HIM. HIS HUMOR IS PEAK! HE ADDRESSES HOW BYU CULTURE AND MODERN CULTURE CAN BE EXPLAINED BY HISTORY WHICH IS SO COOL AND MUCH NEEDED. ASSIGNMENTS ARENT HARD. I WOULD CREATE FLASHCARDS TO STUDY EACH CHAPTER. VERY GENEROUS GRADER. HONORED TO TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
If you're like me and skim textbook readings (or skip them completely), you'll struggle in this class. The weekly quizzes pull information directly from the textbook, and you'll fail unless you took meticulous notes on the assigned chapter. The study guides are vague and don't prepare you for the tests. Take HIST201 from someone else.
If you're a history major, take this class from Dr. Christensen! He gears the class towards prepping you for an actual career in history. Everything he teaches, he actually practices and he shows it. He didn't assign any busy work so the class is very self-guided. It was tough, but very rewarding.
The dude knows how to teach. He is a somewhat difficult professor but he truly cares and really taught me how to research and write better. He always incorporated the gospel as well, which was nice! Highly reccomend!!
this class is such a joke. Weekly quizes that he claims arent going to be too hard yet they pull from such niche info in the textbook. Like its unreal. Its a class for try hards and this professor seems to not care that everyone here is taking it for a general and not our major. I promise you will regret this class.
I don't think there's a professor with a gamer personality. He's the epitome of those who can't do, teach
This is probably the hardest class I've taken at BYU. Lots of reading. Don't believe him if he says a quiz will be easy or obvious. It almost never is. There aren't very many assignments, so recovering from a bad grade is really hard to do. I really hate this class lol. I'm a decent student and have never felt more helpless.
This class was a pretty solid general. Lots of reading, but you can do well on the quizzes by doing the reading and going to TA hours. The professor's lectures are interesting, but he tends to get political and sometimes makes mildly offensive comments. The tests are based on lecture, and the assignments are easy if you follow the rubric.
Wouldn't take this class again, quizzes are weekly and you have no idea what the questions could be on the large amounts of reading you had to do in between. You do learn a lot, but way more difficult than it needs to be.
I took his class this semester and it has been one of my favorite classes ever! He's funny, well-knowledgeable, and is an engaging teacher you will enjoy listening to. Also, the textbook readings are long, and you have to read them, because you have weekly quizzes that ask about annoyingly specific things in the chapter. Be ready to work hard!
This class was one of the most difficult generals I've ever taken. Grades are based on very few assignments and it's really hard to recover if you miss something. Essays are graded harshly on things that are never mentioned in class. The lectures were really interesting and engaging but if you need a good GPA, I definitely wouldn't recommend.
This is one of my favorite classes -- he is such a good professor and I loved attending his lectures because he taught modern applications to ancient history and I learned so much! The tests are pretty simple if you attend class and study, and there are 3 short essays. There is a quiz every week but if you do the reading you'll be totally fine.
For a 201 class Professor Christensen is a difficult grader. I'm a history major and many of our classes are research based, Professor Christensen loves memorization based quizes and a teaching style that is very different from the rest of the history dept. If you take his class be prepared to throughly study the textbook and lectures to suceed.
