nice teacher but picky marker
very nice and funny man, hard marker- need perfect grammar
Funny guy! Loves to talk, easy quizzes, hard essays/tests, perfect your grammar!

Picky on grammer, but knows his stuff

Very good class
Life is a highway....and well, I want to ride it. Funny guy, good class
Not very helpful with students, sucks at getting essays back in a timely matter
Nice, funny. Hard though, and a little absent minded.
awful. sometimes he's funny, but it takes him forever to mark essays. he made business students read philosophy papers that no one understood. the guy's a joke, that's it.
dont expect to see your marks until the last minute. uses exams over and over from previous semesters

One word - yummy
This guy is such a waste of time. You don't even have to go to class in order to pass the class. I've missed about half and others in my class say I didn't miss anything. He is very bad at staying on topic and tends to talk to himself. Worst prof@KUC.
What a cuttie. Doesn't return essay's on time. Gets off topic a lot. Overall alright marker vert helpful and extremly cccuuuttttteee.
Rambles to himself all class, you dont have to be there for weeks and you wont miss anything. Pretty tough marker, but if you know what he wants you can get a decent mark I guess. I wouldn't take him again for sure.
Mark's a good teacher. He rambles a bit in class, but it's not a problem. He's interesting and knowledgeable; a slow marker, but very thorough and fair. Not an "easy" class, but you can get a good mark if you work for it. Good text choice! And h
What a horrible class. He rambled on about nothing. I left class everyday at the break I got so bored. Managed to pass the class but he's a very hard marker. His final was also incredibly tough. Don't take his class unless you're an English fanatic!!

What a pretentious twit. Never met someone so in love with his own cleverness, so eager to come off as some great intellect. Lectures consisted of boring, unfocused, uninspired prattle.
I started out optimistic, but thus far, he's a big disappointment. Should've listened to the bad reviews. Picky and boring. Classes are uninspired and makes you keep reading logs, which are a major drag. Is into poetry, which I hate.
he only teaches one eng 1100 class...which can say a lot. He takes forever to hand things back. He's a picky teacher. And he starts off with a lot of grammar. Tiny assignments and goes over them. He writes for the vancouver sun...so lots of editorial.
I don't agree with all the bad comments. He is really insightful, funny ,and intelligent. He's clear in what he wants and expects. Do your work and see him for advice or even a draft. He's helpful and passionate. Fair marker. I reccomend him to anyone.
Great teacher, helpful, and will stay after class to talk to you if you need help. With that in mind, the course itself is hard. Not sure if all English classes are that hard, but I was getting an A in gr12 eng and now its around B level. Good prof though
Ego-full and generally unhelpful. A flake. Avoid this class unless you are a nerd or a cute smart girl.
He didn't know what he was doing and was ALWAYS late for class. He never even gave the class back the last essay.
He is a pretty tough prof; he sets high standards and it can be a shock for 1st years. But I do feel that being in his class has improved my writing. Notice my semicolon usage in that first sentence. That's pure COCHRANE

do all your readings and get marks on his reading quizzes; however, do not hestitate seeing him before handing in your essay. Be sure to see him maybe a week or earlier before the due day, so that you'll have much more time to make correction.
To everyone who says he is hard...umm nope! He is so easy if you just go to class and pipe up with a comment or two during class. I got a A- and I didn't even try...and trust me, I am just an average student...and I guess it helps if you're a cute girl..
great prof, lots of effort on his part. he goes through the material thoroughly, supplying students with lots of points for papers and is always available for extra help. he might be picky with grammar but he IS an ENGLISH prof. let the guy do his job.
ugh....super hard marker and always talks about irrelevant things...super picky with grammar...takes VERY long to hand back tests and papers
he was quite a good teacher, he actually tried to make class fun by making jokes and such. he's a really nice guy and he's easy to talk to, definitely a good teacher to have.
Marks essays throughly, which is helpful & shows that he actually reads your work. He's a challenging instructor who stimulates students and sets high standards of excellence. When you do well in his class, you know you've earned the grade & deserve it.
I found him inspiring and helpful. Really supportive, easy going, though not necessarily always organized. But other than that, a very good teacher.
I think its hard to make this course interesting - its just kinda dull no matter what. Mark is nice and answers questions.
A prof who truly loves the subject matter he teaches. Can mark things hard, but gives marks in other areas to make up for it. Nice guy, and very interesting (most of the time!).
hes a nice guy! and he makes learning interesting, i went into the class hating the topic: gender trouble...but in the end i did pretty good..he does mark hard..but he gives out esay quizes on the readings...iactually learned stuff.
I'm an A+ student, but I could barely pull off a B- in his class. The previous comment is right, "if you want to lower your GPA take his class!"
Was a bit nervous about an english class, but managed to do very well with Mark. Very clear, let's you know what he expects on papers and in class essays. Didn't mark too hard, definitely not unreasonable. I did better in his class than 1110.
I loved taking english with Mark, lots of dirty jokes and off-topic discussions. He's a great teacher though and makes the material fun. He's really picky with grammar, but that's what english is about right? Very thourough marker which is so helpful.
quite a challeging prof
i thought he was hard at first but than realized he is actually an amazing prof. very helpful looks over the essays with you and helps as much as he can, theres a lot of grammar but its english, the last essay on film was a lot of fun to write about, he is very helpful i definantly recommend him.
cool guy
One of the best English teachers I have ever had! I learned more in his class that I did in my 5 years of high school English. The class is pretty boring though, but English is a pretty dry subject. As long as you can follow instructions and conform to his marking style, you'll be fine.
A little scattered, but very nice, very helpful. The class was interesting.
He's great! He doesn't even get mad if you yell at him! I'd definitely take him again as my teacher in my next English course.
SOOOO BORING...TALKS ABOUT THINGS TOTALLY NOT RELEVANT...GOES OFF TOPIC ALL THE TIME....MARKS REALLY REALLY HARD ON ESSAYS AND TESTS...STICKLER FOR GRAMMAR...MUMBLES TO HIMSELF ALOT...ANSWERS HIS OWN QUESTIONS...YAWN...BORING
oh god i tell u guys this man is awesome he is helpfull and he cares and gives u extra time if u need it u should take him eventhough english is not an easy course having a good teacher helps TRUST ME
Not only is he brilliant, but he is also probably the kindest most easy-going prof you will meet. On top of this, he seems to be one of the few profs who still has a passion for what he teaches. Those who gave him bad reviews, get a clue and learn to read you idiots. Mark is a stand-up guy who teaches an entertaining class that is NOT DIFFICULT.
Mark is a good teacher, highly intelligent, and helpful... yet, he deliberately introduces ethically questionable material that should remain in his own private realm. His course schedual is unrealistic and his essay marking focuses so highly on gramatical errors that he sometimes misses the point. Tough marker, good teacher, ethically questionable.
An entertaining and informative class. His schedule provided a wide range of interesting and inspiring material.
He totally sucks at teaching. Most of the time he doesn't even know what he is doing! He's the worst teacher ever! At his rate battling the clock and cramming in stuff nothing ever gets done! I'm having a terrible semester, Thanks to him!
He is a great teacher, really disorganized but nice and helpfull and not a hard marker, very understanding i had a family problem and that was killing my mark and he helped me by giving me extra time, i would love to take him again
2 words: he sucks! Comment: don't take his class. Opinion: he doesn't know how to teacher! and he's a horrible teacher. The End!
WORST TEACHER IN HISTORY!!!!! DON'T TAKE HIM!!! A WASTE OF $$$$$$
Mark loves music and literature. However, due to his passion he tends to go on and on and it can be confusing. Also, be prepared to work in his class you may have to read about 2 books and several hand outs at the same time. Regardless, the whole class was about music and the last assignment is picking an artist you like and writing about them
Mark really wants to teach you about looking at things from a different perspective. His passion for teaching comes through every time. He may be a bit loose with his lesson plan but only because he jumps on those impromptu "teachable moments." Very objective marker (cares about ideas). Very flexible with his office hours. Great teacher :)
He does not clarify on what he would like to see :(
nice guy but extremely hard marker.
All the idiots that complain hes a hard marker obviously have no idea what they're doing. English is a hard subject OVERALL. No english teacher can give u an A if u dont write properly. plus what he teaches u will help u write in other classes. Hes a good teacher, I'd recommend the teacher but not the class english is TOUGH!
Mark is a great prof. He is clear, concise and you know what to expect from him. He will help you excel in your writing if you put in the effort. He is funny and his class is very interactive (no boring lectures). He has lots of experience and is understanding and VERY helpful. I would love to take him again.
He's a total fox. He's a bit of a hard marker..but if he sees that u've tried hard he'll notice. He's a nice guy n gives u plenty of time for in class stuff.
Don't take him, waste of time, seriously needs to get a life...assignments are way too long, 8% grammar marks, which is pointless. Dont waste you're money, this is a POINTLESS class. Consider other teachers.
Great prof--super nice.
I adore Mark. He's really a nice guy, but you still have to put lots of effort into this class. Take the readings seriously. Always read the "red ink" on your marked essays. If you keep making the same grammar mistakes you WILL bomb. Even if you aren't the most eloquent writer, at least hand in stuff that's free of simple grammar mistakes.
Very kind, very passionate, very understanding. Does a good job explaining everything and his comments regarding essays are helpful.
Good teacher, Helpful, funny, knows his stuff, if you work hard and are willing to listen, you'll probably get a good mark. I will take him again next chance I get.
nice guy, can be funny, but he is extremely tough on citations. you really need to know MLA, one of his assignments is purely just a citation assignment on MLA-no essay, just citing. other than that, hes as tough as any other eng prof..
I thought he was trying to get into law school....What happened with that?
This is by far my favorite professor. He doesn't give out a lot of homework; however, he's all about the at home essays. Two in-class essays are written, along with the final exam at the end of the semester. He is also hilarious (in a dorky way but I love it), laid back and very easy going teacher. I would definitely recommend this professor!
awesome teacher
nearly failed all my essays
i dont know who the moron is that made the last post. This teacher is absolutely got some issues with students. He seems very nice at first. He is a very cool person, but he marks and rips open your essay like a lawyer or detective. PS: He is a lawyer during the day and teaches classes during evenings. Avoid at all costs please. Trust me!!!!!!!!!!!
extremely hard marker.. i have never got a grade less than a B in english and im failing his class.. his quizes are very tough too and you have to read about 100 pages every week just to prepare for the quiz
A Great Prof. Be prepared to do a lot of homework. Does everything he can to help you improve. Grades like any other Engl Prof. Quirky humor. Always eager to clarify and help.
Mark is a good teacher, although he can be unclear sometimes, he really wants everyone to do well. Most in-class essays are open-book and he is very funny (You'll know what I mean). He does care a lot about grammar so make sure your papers are free from mistakes. I had Grammar mistakes but minor ones and I got a B+ in the course.
Mark is a good teacher and very nice! though he isn't very clear with what he wants. The course is well divided, so if you flunk one, there's still chance to improve your mark. he is very understanding if you reason with him.
Had him for both my first year English classes and he was awesome. A good teacher who cares about his students. He was the only reason I passed those courses.
Hes nice enough and will happily answer your questions but he doesn't give back assignments till 3-4 weeks later. His first exam is more like a pressure test and the first half of the course up to with-drawl date is worth 35% the 2nd half is worth 65%. Unbalanced. assignment worth 5% is unfair-have to strictly follow the text but the text is wrong
Cochrane is nice but he is very inconsistent of what he expects from the students. He would say follow what the textbook book says. Then after handing the assignment, he says the textbook was wrong and so he marks your assignment wrong. He also takes to long to give back your essay. His test are hard! AVOID.
Mark is a good teacher but he is often VERY frazzled and loses track of what he wants to do, and often wastes time stressing about NOT having enough time. He marks incredibly hard and expects something different every time. If you get your papers done ahead of time, he reports back with different instructions. I would choose another teacher.
Lots of handouts, many of which provide material that is not tested. Did not assign a crazy amount of readings, though. Mark is willing to negotiate some deadlines and discuss assigment criteria, so he seems flexible that way. Be prepared for "productive" classes, with lots of reading and commentary, little group work or discussion. He is fair.
Mandatory weekly assignments. Confusing as hell and doesn't even know what he is talking about. AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!
This professor is a generous person who puts students before himself.
Gets Frazzled often goes off on a tangent. Don't expect anything marked back for 3-4 weeks. Expectations for intro to uni writing are ridiculous. Nice guy overall. I struggled with his assignments but really tried and I ended up with a B.
Engaging prof. There are weekly assignments but useful, good for preparation for essays and exams. Definitely would take another class with him.
Awesome prof! Gives out lots of homework, but it's not difficult if you read the textbook. Lectures are interesting and fun, he's nice as a person and approachable. Will help if you need itask. However, very strict and nit-picky about grammar.
Mark is a good prof - if you like English (if not avoid). Many weekly readings & quizzes. 3 In-Class Essays, 2 At-Home Essays. Clear in his expectations & willing to prolong due dates. Very smart and interesting guy & his class will improve your writing (dissects every piece of writing you hand in). Fair marker, would take again.
He talks ALOT and half the time its random. refers to the textbook and his preference -take note on what he says he likes and doesn't from the textbook. Marks will be given for techniquesstructures he prefers..
If you looking for just a pass, then take his course. You will not get higher than a C+ and he voices that during his first class. He's not interested in talking with students and helping them succeed. When you do ask him for feedback he implies you should already know how to do the work and if you don't then it's your loss. Avoid.
Has a quiz every class, even on the same day as our first exam. We felt not only rushed and stressed but we all barely finished it in time at 10pm even though class ended at 950pm... Excessive reading on irrelevant course content which he would then test your memory. So boring, talked for 3 hours straight -.-
AVOID HIM AT ANY COST!!! he expects us to be professional 4th year english students. He is not helpful at all and does not hand back assignments until 2 or 3 weeks later or says he will email them back and forgets. Extremely hard proff he should not be teaching a 1st year english course!! i will never take a class with him again !!!
This prof is seriously boring. He is very monotone, and does not engage the class at all. I ended up dropping the class because his marking his hard and isn't clear about what to expect.
There was no suprises and he was very precise on what he needed from us in order to attain the grade we required. I would recommend his class! :)
Cochrane is very boring and monotone. He gives too many weekly assignments! As if we do not have any other classes to study for. Other than that he seems nice but still AVOID him if you can.
Worst instructor I have had so far. His classes were so boring that I actually fell asleep a couple of times! And I was not the only one. I honestly had the chance to drop the class, but I thought I can make it through. Seriously the worst mistake of my university life.
I honestly don't understand how people can fail his class. Yes the subject is boring but its easy to pass. He tell's you what he expects and provides you examples of essays to mirror. If you fail maybe its because you didn't pay attention. There were no surprises and everything was straight forward with what he wanted.
Mark was a very nice guy. He gave us in total 3 papers to work on, which was given ALOT of time to be finished. He thoroughly goes through the handbook, where assignments (very small) are assigned. Two tests, one counts as a final. Group things only occurred when we were peer editing, but otherwise a funny teacher who really gives feedback!
Honestly hardest course ever. 2 semesters ago he failed 90% of the people. he takes 1 mark of your report for every grammer and punctuation mistake. He writes all over your essays for every mistake he finds, and deducts a mark for each one. He failed my essays only based on Punctuation mistakes. Must avoid, choose any other teacher.
Want to fail take mark. Otherwise, take another professor
just one word worst prof..
Tough grader.
Mark is really good professor. Always willing to help and cooperates. Very generous with giving you some extra time and makes his expectations very clear before every test and section. Should definitely take him if you wanna improve your writing.
Lectures too long; homework assigned and due prior to professor explaining how to do it.
Mark is a really good prof, and helps his students a lot. Hes actually a funny guy too, yeah hes a tough grader but all english profs are tough graders. The examples he teaches in class are very similar or exact to the ones on his exams/final.
Mark has a good sense of humour. Other than that, he assigns way too much homework on a weekly basis for any student that is full time. He is a very very tough grader. I have always gotten As on every single essay or research paper I have ever written in my 3 years at KPU. Mark gave me a C. I would not recommend any other student take his course.
He needs to understand that the students in class have a life as well other than sticking their faces into books 24/7. He gives so much homework like on days where theres no big essay due I understand but even on the days he makes an essay due he gives like 5 things for homework. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Mark is an amazing teacher. He knows how to explain concepts, gives clear guidelines, and marks fairly as well. If you are someone who does not want to work, then you won't do good with him. Put in the work, and know how to speak English, and you'll get an A. I would definitely take him again.
He's a great professor. As long as you put the work in, he gives great feedback and is always willing to answer questions. Don't skip his class or you'll fall behind. The method he uses for both writing and grading essays will be your go-to guide. Don't treat his course like any other English course you've taken in the past. I'd take him again.
He keeps rushing through everything and is more concerned about the time than content. We had asked for an extension on the time limit for our quiz but it is still not enough. During class, he briefs us on the week's topic but we have to teach ourselves the rest. WHY AM I PAYING HIM WHEN I AM TEACHING MYSELF?!
A great teacher, but a tough grader. Put in the work required and you'll do just fine.
Not recommend
He rlly enjoys what he does and gives clear instructions about what he expects and wants from each assignment the only downside is that the quizzes are rlly hard/v specific and he doesn't give back grades/feedback quickly at all which makes doing exams difficult however he does mark fairly easily. Nonetheless, he's a rlly nice guy and was v open
Mark is friendly. But... his workload is heavy. 1-4 assignments and readings assigned each week (5-30min each). Expect not to get any feedback in this class. He only marks your assignments after the semester is over. Got my second essay back the day before the final. Attendance is mandatory as he initials your work in class to know you've done it.
He was not a good professor. He does not give any feedback on the essays we submit. Please do not take him.
The amount of work he gives every week is insane. Working on his assignments made me lose all my time management skills. I would sray up till late just so i could atleast get a 50% in his essays. He is a very tough grader. You're lucky enough to get a passing grade on his essay let alone the tests.
