Great Prof, hard marker. BUT he helped us out for our final, it was the last of 5 in a row and he changed it a week before we were to write it to make it as straitforward as possible (it required about 0 studying and was open book)! If you paid attention in class you should have done ok. He wants us to learn the big picture ideas not trivia

Great delivery. The guy is the best speaker amongst all the mba profs at uvic but unfortunately he's light on content and heavy on fluff. Most of the stuff covered in this course is just common sense man! This course should be an elective.

I've finished my degree so I can reflect on the best classes and this was one of them. Mark's classes were always 'spot on' and he uses lots of pratical examples. The only drwaback is HSM students must take this class which seems unfair as others can chose their specialization

Mark is honestly a gem. He does 15 mins of standup comedy every class and its probably the best part of the entire lecture. He's really easy going and makes the subject super interesting. The only downside is that he plays off the midterms like theyre nothing but you actually need to study for them in order to do well. Great guy though! DING DONG!!

Mark kept the course fun and interesting throughout the entire semester. Every class started with 10 minutes standup comedy, and was followed by an upbeat lecture. If you study, you will get a good grade. No surprises.

It is a very engaging class for sure, and literally was the only class I really bothered going to the last semester; not because I had to but because I wanted to. One paper, 2 "quizzes" (midterms), a final & 10% participation (allowed 4 skips)

Some seem to be disappointed with grade rather than class. This class was unlike any other I have taken with the best guest speakers, voting, cases etc. definitely don't take if you want traditional class. A MUST

While studying for this exam I exam I took a break to read Marks commnets. I have to agree it is not often you get a class with content and comedy! I did not miss a class and I learnt so much. I'm pre-commerce so fingers crossed I get him later on too.

Very fun and inspiring class, with amazing guest speakers. Although I feel I learned a fair amount, this class was quite heavy on fluff. We rushed through accounting way too fast and I felt like I was poorly prepared for the final exam.

Glad to say I aced the final exam and got an A. If you come to class but don't do tutorials/see prof outside of class then you will not be prepared enough to get an A. You need to make use of extra learning opportunities. BEST CLASS IN MY UVIC EXPERIENCE!!!

Amazing prof. Engaging, amusing, knowledgeable and friendly. I was nervous about being in a class of 300 but I didn't have any problems. He was there whenever you had questions and was more than happy to go the extra mile. Mark cares about each and everyone of his students. Every class i had a new story joke to tell people. i have always wanted to go into business and mark really helped confirm my decision. his papers are tough but the tests are awesome if you pay attention in class, attend tutorials, and study a bit.

Had com 100 with him and it had the smallest workload of all my classes (2 midterms, 1 paper and the final) and it was an easy A. Even though I'm not doing business, I feel like I got a lot of knowledge from that class that I can use in any field.

Loved it all and that's a rare thing - guest speakers were a real highlight. lighter on workload than others - and I like that! If you can get in take it for sure its a monumental class which is so much fun.

Great prof. Entertaining lectures that were both funny and interesting, he is truly an inspirational speaker. He only gave a midterm, final and 2 assignments, one of which a group project. Both assignments took time, which was okay as the individual assignment especially was fascinating. If you do the readings you'll do fine. No textbook as well.

One of the best loved his 'real' assignments. I never gapped and only missed a few classes. Best bit was the feedback which was always quick and we could use to make changes before final version was handed in.

He went through great personal traumas while teaching this class in this semester, and I admire his optimism and grit even though he has to go through some seriously horrific situations.

Mark is amazing. He's so funny and engaging, but you also actually learn from him. He covers so much useful content, and he always keeps it fun and interesting. I took at 8:30 am class with him and didn't miss a single one just because I really enjoyed the lectures. Not a hugely heavy courseload, but everything you do cover is very useful.

Colgate was hilarious. He actively keeps his lectures filled with humour to make his students a) want to attend his lectures, and even further, b) makes them want to participate. He's very aware that the material he's instructing might not be interesting at times, and yet he makes it very much so. He's a solid favourite.

Felt bad missing a class as they we were so much fun and useful to attend. No textbook saved me so much $$$ too. Best part was getting feedback on assignment early so I could improve it before it got graded. No other prof did this. Highly recommend

Professor Colgate's sense of humor is what made time fly during our 8:30am lectures. He was also very reasonable when grading the big assignment - if you handed in the rough draft, you got feedback before you handed in the final version. The final exam was fair but took forever to get back. He was very approachable and made me want to improve.

Engaging and motivating prof. Made me switch majors. Down to earth concept explainations that leave you with a deep understanding of the material, highly recommend! He tells dad joke stories all the time and then sneaks in valuable information, makes you feel like youre not even in a lecture at 8am. Like medicine in a chocolate bar baby.

I never write reviews but Mark deserves this one. I ENJOY going to class. He puts so much effort into every lecture and always cracks FUNNY jokes. He designed the course for all to succeed and I have gained so much knowledge from him. Wonderful prof, take his class, its a MUST!!!

Doubt anyone needs more convincing but if you do I genuinely implore you to take Mark's COM100 class. Most engaging, funny, and easy to learn class I have ever taken, and not because the material is the easiest. Instead of textbooks he assigns specific article readings that, if you read them, take notes, attend class, I guarantee you will do well.

I did com 450 coaching class with prof colgate and it changed me so much. We coached each other and mark coached us through the whole semester. It was such a hands on course which was uncomfortable at times but a wicked learning experience

The lectures were very engaging and he was a fun prof. There are readings before each class that he quizzes you on but they are really easy.

This class was my best at UVic for sure. We learned the science behind coaching and we practiced coaching in every class too. For the final project, we had to coach Mark 1-1 to get a coaching certificate which made it real. I feel like I've got skills I can take into the workplace that maybe others don't have. 100% recommend if offered

Funny. His class is really high-regarded. He's a little bit overrated if you ask me, but a good prof nonetheless. His lectures did get kinda stale towards the end of the course, but at least it's not a difficult class. Overall, a fine choice for a class, not raving about it but not at all against it either.

Class is incredibly easy, I probably worked on this class for like a total of 20 hours over 3 months, easy A+.

I loved Mark Colgate, he somehow made this class so fun and made everyone laugh each class. His lectures were relevant and interesting and the assignments were as well. If I could take another class with him I would there was never a dull lecture with him. The midterms were pretty easy and so were the assignments as long as you keep up to date.

Took Com 100 and Mark Colgate was so funny and so engaging. I loved his lectures- they were split half in person half online, and I never wanted to miss one- not because I needed the help but because it was just so fun with his jokes and positive attitude. 100% would take this course again with him. I loved Mark Colgate. He was an awesome Prof. Pretty accessible outside of class, reasonable, fun dude overall. It was online but I still loved it. He explained topics, questions, and answers, plus went into detail with examples. There were short zoom poll quizzes, pretty easy if you have the reading open. I WOULD TAKE IT AGAIN!!!

mark is a freaking legend, told us a lot of great stories and his book is a must read. he gives out all materials needed to the class for free, final structure is a little bit odd and oddly resource intensive compared to the rest of the class. Did a coaching class with mark as a 4th year elective - was hands on every class and learned skills not typical is a Bcom. We had to coach mark for the last assignment which was high stakes but cool. 100% recommend any class he teaches

Chill guy, gives some of the most informative and entertaining lectures at UVIC. Com 100 introduces a lot of interesting concepts, ideas, and case studies. There is a fair number of long readings for the course, which do come up on Midterm #1 and the final. As long as you stay on top of the reading you'll be fine.

Lectures were so engaging, funniest and nicest prof I've ever had who also marks very fair. Would highly recommend taking any course with this prof!
