To begin with, Prof. Collinson is one of the best at IVC. He has amazing working experiences and really knows the materials well. But, what makes everything not be as perfect as it should be is that Prof. Collinson has a serious British accent. Pay attention on the class, and you will get what your want! Extra credit is counted up to 5% or more.
Professor Collinson is an excellent teacher. Having worked in the banking industry for years, he has a great knowledge of how Macroeconomics plays a role in real-world situations, adding extra insight to our class. He also knows how to reexplain things in a new way so as to allow one to understand a concept better. And his British accent is tight!
Prof. Collinson was awesome and always here to help his students. Besides his amazing working experiences, Prof. Collinson was also enthusiastic with his job. Clearing grading and fair tests. It will never a bad decision to take his class.
Grading criteria not clear, don't know what he expect and typed everything you can, but still give you a bad grade when you don't even know where you need to improve. Expect you to know many things when this is only "econ 1." Expect you to ask questions in class.
British accent. 75% + is an A. DON'T need book. Humble, funny. Can be unclear at times, but always willing to rephrase. Genuinely nice guy. Get an A without studying, just show up to class. TAKE THIS CLASS. If you want an easy A, you got it. If you want to really learn the material, he's great.
Horrible Professor. He is not clear on his assignments and neither were his lectures. Although he has a degree in Economics doesn't mean he should be teaching it. In the beginning of the semester he class was full and about half way through his class 75 percent of the class dropped. This shows that he obviously isn't getting through students.
His class is definitely challenging. I skipped ECON1 and still got an A. You only need a 75% for an A. He's an easy grader but there's just so much material. He is a great professor and will spend as much time as necessary to make sure his students understand a concept. I would definitely take him again. He also gives a lot of extra credit.
Prof Collinson definitely has a passion for what he is teaching and I can tell he really enjoys teaching. But his grading criteria is a bit harder to grasp. 4 take home assignments that ask really broad questions and it's hard to understand what he wants. Maybe that's why the class is so curved. Take at your own risk!
Professor Collinson is definitely one of my favorite professors in my two years at IVC. Friendly, always willing to help, and provides real world information/lessons from his experience in business
He has a British accent that keeps things interesting. However, most of his lectures are difficult to grasp since the material does not flow well. He has changed his 75% A policy to the usual 90% (SPRING '16). His tests are based 70% on the information in notes and 30% of additional information covered in lectures. He gives extra credit.
FYI, I had a REALLY tough time in Economics. His grading can be a bit confusing, not as in how he grades, but rather how to add up your current grade in the class. There's EC but very little test and assignments. Final is worth a TON of the grade (40%). He's very nice and helpful when you need him. It's a lecture based class.
Macroeconomics Honors is a very hard class; prepare to study a lot. You cannot slack off in this class, or you'll pay for it later on! There are only 3 exams during the semester and the final is worth a whopping 40% of your grade. Make sure to review everyday and get the concepts down so you can ace the tests.
Worst teacher. Was not clear on many things. Tests are extremely hard and he grades very poorly. The entire class I was in, no one passed the class. His grading scale is curved because his student's aren't understanding his confusing lectures, and his low scores he gives you, is him "being generous". He makes macroeconomics more complicated.
WORST ECON CLASS! Made it hard to understand macroeconomics, even friends of mine (currently in the process of receiving their Masters in economics) said his teaching skills, tests, and grading is ridiculous
Not clear whatsoever, tests are extremely tough and unfair. When he grades your homework, and even if you fail, its still him "being generous". Even admitted no one has ever aced his final. Doesnt make sure the time is taken to review. Unclear and redirected answers. Never a straight answer.
3 tests and the final is 40% of your grade. Extra credit is 5%. Cumulative percentages he gives make it confusing to figure out it you're passing. Doesnt go over tests, doesnt tell us whats the correct answer on tests. Mandatory attendance and takes off 10% of your final grade everytime you miss. Never enough time on the tests.
All the people who think he's hard is hilarious. A is 75%. The three papers for homework are 30% of the grade and just put as much research in them you get all the points. Then the tests are easy if any of these kids ever studied. I had 58 points out of 60 going into the final and the final is 40% of the grade. All I needed was 17/40 that's a 43%.
While he does curve the class, a 75% is an A, it is extremely hard to even get that! He does not give study guides and doesn't grade fair on the tests or hw. Lectures are also extremely heavy, lots and lots of formulas and random information you need to remember for some small portion of the test. Avoid at all costs!
He's not a tough grader, in fact he actually gives points generously if you are going towards the right direction in Econ. I think people think he's hard because they are literally giving minimal effort to study econ. If you want help through youtube, ACDCLeadership is really helpful. Watch those videos and you'll get an A. Pay attention in class!
Not too bad,6 /18 of our class had A's going i to the final, so an A is not impossible. He grades assignments according to his rubric. Tests are very lenient grading as well. His lecturing is OK, the thing with econ is you need a good professor to translate graphs into words. I recommend MIT OCW Principles of Microeconomics for extra help. Take him
A benevolent and humorous professor BUT unclear grading criteria and difficult exams. had to drop because couldnt dedicate the time to the class. take at ur own leisure
It is really hard to get B or better.
His tests are multiple choice, 1 point for the right answer and 4 points for the explanation. This is why it's pretty easy to get an A- You can circle the wrong answer choice, but as long as your explanation for your answer is correct and thorough you will get 4/5 points. 75% is an A in his regular sections, lots of extra credit.
Fantastic Professor! He gives great lectures and truly wants you to understand economics. Be prepared to do a lot of graphing and explaining answers if you want to get full credit. 3 Tests, 4 Assignments, 1 final. 75% is an A. Attendance is highly recommended if you want to pass!
Loved the teacher's British accent. He really knew his stuff and any question asked was answered. Lectures are straight forward as well as all of the grading criteria you are given on the syllabus. He does not ever drop a student if they never come but if you don't come Im pretty sure you won't pass this class due to it being lecture focused tests.
Professor Collinson is a rather free-flowing professor. I have taken him for both Econ G175 and Econ G170. 3 tests and 3 assignments, 75% (each assignment is worth 10 and final is 40). I needed a 15/40 on the final to guarantee myself an A, and I didn't really study. His British accent and funny examples help keep lectures interesting.
I am currently taking his ECON 2 right now. he is amazing! He tried really hard for his class, almost hand typed all his tests and assignments. he isn't one of your lazy professor that read through PP. For those who screw around would totally fail the class. but If you turn up and sit through his class, you would find it very rewarding!
In response to the comment below; I screwed around, almost never turned up to class and still got an A. Its about the quality of effort you put in and not the quantity. Professor Collinson's teaching maybe unorthodox at times, but overall he is very a professional, polite and helpful gentleman and one of the nicest professors at IVC.
never gotten below a C in ANY class ever until I got a D in Econ1H. IDK if it's because it was a summer class, but Prof Collinson's lectures just bored&confused me. For tests, I'd been keeping up with the material&book (though the book isn't required)& studied 13 hours straight&got Ds on the last 2 tests. have to grade replace now& I rly tried HARD
Accessible outside class, hilarious, test heavy, amazing lectures, caring, extra credit,
Hes a tough grader. lectures kinda bore me. Not sure what final grade was but it was an A or B! Hes a nice proffesser and he gives a lot of extra credit! you need a 75% in the class to get an A. Hes kinda hard grading tests but on the essays not so bad. Hes a good teacher but lectures could be more interesting. He counts attendance so show up!
Easily one of the best teachers Ive ever had. The basis for success in his class, as he says on the very first day, is to turn up and keep up. Gives you the slides for the PowerPoints; all you have to do is pay attention and write notes when necessary. The more diagrams you show on tests and assignments, the higher grade you will get.
Best professor ive ever had, amazing lecture, this is my second course with him and its the only course i enjoy, just understand the lectures and u will get an A, i widh if he would teach other courses because i will not hesitate to take his class again
Collinson is the BOMB. If there were an ECON 3H and he taught the class I'd take it even if it were a 0 credit course
I took his summer class, so naturally, everything was much more fast paced. However, he stayed after every class to clearly explain all the questions I had. I can tell that he cared a lot about my understanding of econ concepts. Also, he gave several extra credit opportunities, which made it much more manageable to get a good grade in his class.
Prof. Collinson is one of the nicest professors in IVC. He is very polite and he cares about his students. You only need to have a 75% to get an A in his class. He will also give you many extra credit opportunities. There are only 3 assignments and 4 tests in his class. But you really need to spend time and effort on those to get a good grade. GLHF
I really like this professor, he is one of the best professors in IVC. He is really nice and friendly. He always makes the point clear. His class contains three take-home assignment and three tests and one final test. As long as your answers make sense, you'll get good grade. You can get at most 5 points for doing the EC and 75 is an A.
He is a kind of teacher who wants his student to ask questions and he will answer the question clear just to make sure you understand it. Never believe that I will think Econ is interesting but he makes me be interested in Econ. Not so tough grader as long as your answer make sense. He always expects image in essay and test. 75 IS AN A.
HIS ENGLISH ACCENT IS VERY CUTE. If he teaches Econ 2, I will definitely take him. But unfortunately, next semester he only teaches Econ 2H :( Take him with you Econ 1 is a decent choice for sure.
Professor grades really tough I don't recommend him take him and you will see. His additional help was useless.
He is hands-down the best professor Ive ever had in my entire life. You have to put in some effort but he makes it possible and all you need is a 75 in the class and you get an A. If you really cannot pass this class you shouldnt be in college. Best Lecturer I have ever seen in my life he should make YouTube videos
He didn't make any accommodations for me when I was sick. Asked him how to improve and he just said to read the book.
Def going to need to put in the work to get the grade, so if you're the studious type, TAKE HIM. He tends to tell stories rather than lec. He is patient and funny. Wants you to do well and will answer any question. The "homework" is extra credit so do it ALL, very worth it. By far my favorite teacher. Don't be afraid to ask him ?'s outside of class
Professor Collinson is my favorite professor I have encountered so far. First off, he has a British accent so lectures are always amazing. You only need a 75 to pass and if you put in the work early, it is a super easy final. He has three assignments and three tests outside of finals each worth 10%. Very generous in grading written work.
This professor is a nice guy but it certainly is not an easy A GE . Doesn't distribute study guides and is vague when answering questions about what to possibly study for the exams. Pretty difficult to access outside of class.
Everyone who says this class is hard wasn't paying attention in lecture. The lecture is a little complicated but he makes everything very clear and goes through everything slowly and logically. He'll happily answer any question. The professor is very smart. He attended two of the 5 best universities for economics in the world. Best econ class.
Anyone who doesn't love Professor Collinson did not put in the work. He is an AMAZING teacher and wants everyone to excel in his class. His lectures are great and his British accent makes them even better! The tests are straightforward based on the lectures and he continuously offers extra credit to help you succeed. I 100% am taking him for Econ2!
I've never had a terrible professor experience except for him.. Doesn't try to understand a college student's responsibilities and life and the hardest thing was that he wasn't really willing to clearly teach anything to the less intellectuals. I had vac. on final week and all of my professors kindly let me take it on a diff day except for this man
Professor Collinson is an amazing teacher. If you show up to class, actually pay attention to the lessons, and put in effort for the homework and exams, you will pass with flying colours. I wish that I had him for ECON1.
He is a nice guy. But he boasts about his background in economics. In his lectures he can run off topic and the examples he provides are unclear. The class barely has homework and is based on test taking performance. If you have difficulty with math do not take this class.
Nothing was more frustrating than understanding a concept being taught only to have it completely blurred by the examples he provided. He's a great teacher with a passion for his job but it's Econ 1 man! He forgets that a lot of his students don't have an in-depth understanding of the subject like him. It might as well have been online
3 tests, 3 take-home assignments, and 2 final exams. Tests are VERY challenging, limit of time, and no study guide. Even he provides a lot of outside EC, it is still difficult. Assignments are ok but have to put a lot of work into it. Multiple choices and analyze an article on the 1st final exam. 2 short essays on the 2nd final exam. 85% is an A.
He is a nice guy with a British accent but I do not recommend him as a professor for an online class. Every tests and assignment are hard and heavy. There are extra credits but some of them are also confusing. Require to understand every macroeconomic term but he does not contribute much time to review. Especially, no study guide for the exam.
overall a good teacher
Best professor at IVC, without a doubt. Super nice, very intelligent, and always willing to help. The class itself is difficult cuz the final is 40% of the grade and everything else is 3 tests, 3 assignments all worth 10%. The book helps, but you only need the lectures. I had him for econ 2H also and was the same. LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT, MaybeTooMuch
Professor Collinson is what I believe one of the best professors at IVC. He s super caring and his class is an easy A. As long as you attend lecture, do the extra credit quizzes (which are a lot), you can average a C on all test and still pass his class with an A. Down side is theres a lot of self studying to do (since he gives out no hw at all)
Professor Collinson is great! He truly wants you to grasp the concepts. I managed to slip away with an A all thanks to the extra credits he gives out. The class was challenging I'm not going to lie. You need to pay serious attention, especially with this online format. If you pay attention, it's an easy A. I didn't always, so that's why I struggled
Professor Collinson is a great professor who is really passionate about the subject. He always asks every few minutes if people are not getting the concept because he cares about people doing well in his class and is easily reachable after class or during scheduled office hours. He gives a tremendous amount of extra credit. He's really wonderful!
Professor Collinson is overall one of the best professors I have taken at IVC. Although his class may appear hard at first, he makes the concepts feel enjoyable and interesting. He is also deeply cares about his students and is incredibly comprehensive of the difficult circumstances we are facing in todays environment. Great EC opportunities too!!
He's one of the best professors at IVC, and you won't regret taking him if you are interested in economics. Even if you're not, he provides a lot of extra credit that can significantly boost your grade (a whole letter change if you do them all). He's lecture-heavy, but there is a lot of resources online you can use to understand the material.
I'm unbiased as possible. He is a very nice professor. If you ask him any questions he will answer it nicely. BUT his lectures are so heavy as if it's not ECON 1. The extra credits, assignments, and tests given are so so so hard. I have As on other classes except this one. Not recommended AT ALL if you have no any economics foundation.
I had to drop this class for my mental health. He doesn't use the book, long lectures, pop quizzes are hard, tests aren't open note, high expectation of already knowing material despite it being Econ 1. Note on Extra Credit, he says its optional but its not. he'll send you a rude email if you don't do it and then drop your grade by 50%.
He's a very nice man, however, he had lots of trouble with technology. During these covid times, learning how to use zoom and technology is so important. He would have a white board in the back and write on it but no one could really see or hear what he's doing. He didn't know what a study guide was.He talked to us as if we should know the material
He's a really nice person and cares a lot and you can tell he's passionate about economics. But it's a lot of work and the work really determines your grade. 3 tests, 3 assignments that are pretty tough, and a final/essay. If you don't pay attention to his lectures you're kinda screwed but the questions on the test are very similar to the lectures.
Tough class, but very caring professor who is fair and will help you do well in the class. Lectures are difficult and long. Tests are ok and assignments are pretty tough.
Truly one of the best professor I've had. Professor Collinson definitely knows what he is talking about, and breaks the concepts down to make them truly understandable. However, the tests are lengthy because you have to provide an explanation for each mcq. But he is honestly very generous with points, so make sure to do all the ec u can!
He is a great professor but his tests are somehow heavy for the first timer in economics. You have to put in a lot of effort to understand, watch YT videos and read online materials. Got grade A but will not take his course again.
Hes a racist.Says Africa is a poor country and has starving kids for Supply/demand. Said "Black's need to try harder. Long lectures and he belittles you in front of class for a question. Test heavy, doesn't contain the material covered in lectures/readings.He doesn't grade attendance properly and will give you a 0 if he assumes you weren't there.
Non-biased review from a bad student. This class is super boring and lecture heavy so it was hard for me to pay attention. As far as grading you only need 85% to get an A. And u get 10% automatically for showing up to class everytime and 5% from doing extra credit quizzes. Which means you only need a 70% average on tests and assingments to get an A
One of the best profs at IVC. He used to work on Wall Street and went to LSE so he really knows his stuff. He'll prepare you extremely well for university work. His class is a lot of work but if you put in the hours and ask questions you'll be okay
He's genuinely one of the nicest professors on campus. Your guide to getting an A in this class is to watch some AP econ youtube videos on top of his lectures. That should get the job done. His tests can be worded in ways that aren't the clearest, but as long as you learn the content it shouldn't matter. Easy honors class to take, great professor.
The comment below that he is racist is stupidly untrue. In any case, ask him anything outside of class and he will do his best to answer. Try to get 60% cumulative points before the final for smooth sailing, and keep in mind he has tons of extra credit that should most definitely be done every time to maximize the chance of getting an A.
A very caring Professor; he had great stories and was very open to any questions you might have for him. However, he strays a lot from the lecture slides and those anecdotes and examples he talks about are important to understand the material for his assignments and exams. You have to understand the content really well to support your answers.
Professor Collinson was truly a pleasure to learn from for both Econ 1H and 2H. His class is definitely lecture-based so be prepared to pay attention and don't skip class. However, he is an extremely caring professor who is extremely knowledgeable and readily available. Tip: Take your time to analyze and understand the curves and graphs. Good Luck!
Great professor. His grading system is backward and his lectures rely on slides + in-class notes, so definitely attend every class if possible. The teaching style is upbeat and engaging. Ask a lot of questions. Tests are fair and sometimes easier than expected. Cool accent.
He is a nice Professor in all and respectful but I remember when I took his class he did not provide us with any study guides before tests so I did not know the best way to study. The tests were not exact to what we studied. When we did our assignments he graded really hard and expected more from us. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Professor Collinson was a pleasure to learn from. The lectures are intense, so I would not recommend skipping class, but his teaching style is very upbeat and will help keep you engaged. Tests are fair, and he will adequately prepare you, but keep in mind that the final is weighted strongly (40%). He has a vested interest in his student's success.
Best econ teacher for honors classes. Super super caring, only recommendation is to get a clear picture of his grading structure to succeed. ALways do the extra creds. Other than that he is lenient if you are nice to him and chat outside of class. Took both 1H and 2H with him. 10/10 would recommend
Prof was great, very caring and helpful always willing to change the due dates. Lots of Extra credit and easy to get an A. Boring lectures but class itself is easy. 3 tests and make sure you do all the extra credits (you can cheat cause hes not the best with technology). All in all a great prof and teaches his subject well.
One of the best professors I've had. Very caring and understanding. Lectures were rather slow and boring, but he taught the content well. You may need to do some self-studying with all the graphs and diagrams there are. Exams reflect the material taught and assignments require a fair bit of economic analysis. Highly recommend if you want to learn.
If you want gain a deep understanding of macroeconomics, I highly recommend you enroll in this class. There are tons of extra credit opportunities. I slacked off when studying for the tests, which is why I earned a B. Earning an A is doable, you just really need to put in the work. There are 3 essay HW assignments, 3 tests, and a final exam.
very funny british guy, makes econ so fun. tests aren't too hard, but you definitely need to study. pay close attention to lectures b/c he uses a lot of anecdotes to explain concepts, but if you don't get something he'll go out of his way to help you.
Mr. Collinson is a very nice British guy, however I think he is an unfair professor. Tests are super difficult in my opinion due to no study guide, and not very clear directions on what to study. If you miss class, it hurts your grade. Tough grader. I only recommend taking him if you want a challenge, otherwise don't take him.
Professor Collinson cares a lot about his students and will go out of his way to help you when you need it. He teaches a very lecture based class, so attendance is very important if you want to do well. As long as you don't skip and keep up with the extra credits and course material, you should be able to get an A pretty easily.
Mark Collinson is a good professor. There is passion in his work and you can tell that he loves the subject. There are three papers, three tests, and a two-part final. There is extra credit and his office hours are flexible. But please DO NOT slack off. Go to each lecture, understand each topic when it is given and you will do fine. (+1pt British)
Amazing Professor. Very inspiring and caring. Gives lots of extra credit. Tests are slightly difficult but he prepares you well for them. 10/10.
The wording on his tests and assignments is weird and many times I had to double-check everything because I misread the question. Do every single extra credit, it can make a whole letter grade difference. The final seems intimidating, but as long as you memorize the characteristics of market structures and know the basics, you will be fine
Very entertaining lectures and lots of extra credit. Hard not to get an A if you turn everything in.
Professor Collinson is an Ivy League caliber professor. I have attended a 4 year prior to IVC and will say with interaction with several PHD professors, he is a rare and special kind. Extremely knowledgeable in the subject, applies concepts to real world examples with ease and is a very humorous guy. I highly recommend his class.
Overall good guy, but his wording can be confusing on exams. Structure: 3 tests - 10% each, 3 assignments - 10% each, 2 part final - 40%. Grading structure is weird but does help if you do terrible on the 3 tests, the final can swing your grade. Didn't get a single A on the 3 tests, but finished with an A. Check on yt for help and you'll be good.
All lecture. The slides don't have all the information, the important stuff is in his words so pay attention and take good notes. 3 exams, 1 final, 1 optional presentation for extra credit. He has an extra credit quiz for every chapter you learn. Nice guy, but this isn't an easy grade booster class.
The class content was fine, but the grading criteria felt inconsistent and sometimes unclear. The wording on both papers and tests was often confusing, which made it hard to know exactly what was being asked. While he was a good professor and explains his lectures thoroughly, his grading and clarity made the course trickier than it needed to be.
The course lacked structure. There were no study guides for the tests, and the grading criteria felt inconsistent. The wording on assignments and exams was often confusing, which made it difficult to prepare effectively. Overall, he had good lectures and explained the material well, but did not feel prepared enough for the exams.
His teaching style didn't work for me at all. Lectures were confusing, study materials unhelpful, and keeping up with grades was difficult. He showed little empathy and was passive-aggressive when I missed a test due to illness, even after providing a doctor's note, and requesting to make it up any time. Took at saddleback- much better experience.
This course is too hard for community college students. His slides are confusing and exams are difficult to prepare for because he does not provide any study guides. You really need to teach yourself for the whole semester. Anyway, he is a friendly guy.
His lectures don't make sense; you have to be in class to understand what he is talking about. Even then, he goes off topic and is vague. Has extra credit for every chapter. The way he words his tests is extremely confusing.
no just no. he took points off for no reason (his reasonings were really weak and compares your work to others), his grading were mostly opinion based. If you REALLY HAVE to take econ honors I would wait a semester just to get another teacher. it will be worth the wait. chill guy but just no
