You don't need a text book; his only assignments are that you read certain articles that are on course reserves. The content is easy to understand. Attendance is not mandatory, but he occasionally passes around a sign-in sheet. If you take notes on lecture and read the articles you will be fine. 4 tests.
Cooney is a nice guy and is really passionate about sociology. All you do is take notes and he assigns lengthy readings but you only have to have them read before the tests. Overall he is a good teacher and the subject is interesting but he gets really specific on the test questions so pay attention in class and take good notes!
Cooney speaks w/ an Irish accent and has a thing for using examples from rap and hip hop to explain his points; he is very entertaining. Friendly and approachable, he makes a real effort to get to know his students. He even recognized me on the street once out of a class of 50. No textbook or homework, and just 4 tests make him highly recommended.
Smart and nice guy but DO NOT take this class if you are looking for an easy A. I had a tough schedule and needed an elective to balance it out, but it ended up being my lowest grade, a C. There isnt a book and his tests are specific. If you enjoy sociology and have the time/are willing to read complicated, long readings, then go for it!
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. I thought it was going to be easy but it was my hardest class. My only C. Get a different teacher.
The people below didn't go to class. If you go to class, do the readings and actually study before each test, you'll do fine. I should have made an A, just didn't go to all the classes, missed notes. I ended up with a B+
I went to class and still had a hard time. Class is pretty interesting, and Dr Cooney's a really cool guy but his tests are so nit picky. You have to read each artical and try to remember quotes because they might be a question on the test. also, remember the side stories/examples he talks about in class because they'll show up too.
Cooney is a good teacher and a nice guy, but his class is very tedious and gets pretty boring after while. His tests are tough, but if you read all the articles online (there is no textbook), you'll be fine.
Attendance is not mandatory, but he does not put notes online. Also, you MUST do the reading (and know it WELL) if you want any hope of doing well on tests. That said, Cooney is a great teacher. Funny, smart, and Irish, he's not at all boring. This class is NOT an easy A, but if you read and study, you'll do fine. Recommended.
He is an amazing teacher. By far one of the best at UGA. I loved this class and so did many of my classmates. There is no textbooks, only required readings. I never read them however, and did fine on the tests. He briefs you on what you are supposed to read in class. He's tall, Irish, and hilarious. He makes class interesting! I;d give him an A++!
Amazing professor, and he has quite a resume if you care to look him up - he's influential in his field, for sure. Terribly knowledgeable and a great lecturer. Very interesting class and as a plus, no textbook! Only online readings. Be warned - the tests are tough, but take good notes and read the notes and readings well and you should be fine.
Surprised to see the blue face! Not going to class killed me. 20% of test questions say "In class I said..." He's very kind and eager to help during office hours. His book, the textbook, is fascinating. I enjoyed him and wish I went to class more.
He is an AMAZING teacher. He is very knowledgeable and relays the information to his students through interesting lectures.Bonus: No textbook! His test are quite hard, read his assigned readings and study them well. Listen carefully to his lectures and attend them all. If you study, there should be no problems!
Mr. Cooney is a really nice guy and he tries to make the class interesting and fun. He has a powerpoint every day, so it's a lot of writing. But, tests are from class lectures. If you go to class and pay attention it's easy to make decent grades on the tests. I don't really like sociology, but he definitely is one of my favorite professors.
A really great class. The tests could be challenging at times, but as long as you attended class you would do fine. The readings could be incredibly lengthy at times though and difficult to follow through. Altogether it was a great class and he's one of my favorite professors
He is a GREAT teacher! He shows you cool and sometimes funny youtube videos to start class. He is straight lecture, which can get tiring, but he makes the material interesting. His tests are very hard and are in great detail, but FYI: he grades more leniently if you choose to do the essay version of the test versus the multiple choice.
There is no textbook, but there are a lot of readings (at least one per class), most of which are interesting, though they can be lengthy. Cooney cares about his students and is very helpful. The lectures are interesting, but you must hand-write notes (no laptops allowed). There's no attendance policy, but you have to show up to get a good grade.
The class is really interesting and Dr. Cooney is an awesome teacher! I highly recommend this class. The textbook is a book that he wrote - so if you either read it or go to class then you will do well! I went to class but didnt read the book and I did well.
I would highly recommend this class! Dr. Cooney is an awesome professor. He was funny and always kept class interesting. However, it is definitely not an easy A! I studied a ton and still only made a B. There's no textbook but its really important to keep up with the article readings.
GREAT professor!! He is exrememly engaging in class and makes the subject INTERESTING. He gives detailed powerpoints that you copy during class. They are easy to follow and very clear. The hard part about the tests is he asks extremely detailed questions from the readings (for example, you have to know percentages and locations). I made an A
Cooney is a great teacher, and he's actually part of the reason I changed my major. You have to read and pay attention in class, but it's worth it. My favorite professor at UGA so far.
Did I miss the free bag of shrooms at the door? No? What else can explain all these positive reviews? This class is awful! There is no textbook, only articles he chooses -- half of which are outdated and spouting theories that have been proven wrong in my other upper level classes. If you read them, bring a pillow to class. Avoid this professor!
His class is unnecessarily hard. We take hand-written notes off a powerpoint. He's really nice and can be funny at times, but his tests are SUPER specific and his answer choices are always tricky.. This class require lots and lots of attention to detail. And our only grades the entire semester are tests so you have to study really hard beforehand!!
On each test you can either write an essay or do multiple choice. WRITE THE ESSAYS. its much easier than the mc. the essay questions are based off the articles so as long as you have an understanding of the articles and do the essays for each test, you can get an A or B and not even go to class, although it might help to go to understand concepts.
Professor Cooney is a good teacher and the classes are relatively engaging. However, the tests are very difficult and force you to pay way to much attention to detail. The tests feel like they are designed to trick you, all of the having an "all of the above" or "A and B" etc. type answers. Its crucial to stay on top of the reading.
The tests are definitely difficult (but you choose between a MC or essay test) but the material is interesting. The notes are word for word on the powerpoints, but he doesn't put them on ELC and you can't use your computers. But Dr. Cooney is a great professor. Interesting lectures, he explains things well and he is very helpful in office hours.
Dr. Cooney is a good teacher. I just took him for Maymester and got a B in the class. He is not hard, but not easy. We had three tests and that is all & optional paper. The tests were tricky sometimes because of the true/false questions, but alright just take your time. However, he is nice and helpful. Study hard & you can get the grade you want!
The class is interesting and he keeps you focused but for an intro class, his tests are ridiculously hard. The questions are really tricky sometimes.
This class is incredibly easy, but that doesn't mean it's useless or boring. You get to learn so much without the pressure of making a good grade. No text book. Four tests. Study for a few hours the day before and you will be fine. Also, I don't know what everyone is talking about. The multiple choice option is the way to go. Not difficult.
He is an interesting guy, and he's from Ireland, so he has a cool accent. I love sociology (I'm a major), so I was interested in the content; however, he makes test s more difficult than they should be and asks ridiculously detailed questions that seem irrelevant to everything.
I don't understand what everyone was complaining about. The tests, although detailed were reasonable. As long as you get complete notes and are a good reader you'll be fine. I got lazy and didn't come to class for 3 weeks. Got notes/thoroughly read articles and still received a B+. But do go to class as he is a great teacher and very interesting!
Dr. Cooney is THE BEST! I'm a sociology major and I LOVE his class. He's not an easy teacher, but not too difficult either. His tests are somewhat difficult and he challenges you to think, but if you attend class and keep up with the readings you should do fine. He's very helpful and there for all of his students!
Dr. Cooney is a great professor. However, you must go to class and pay attention to his lectures. Try to keep up with the readings. I fell behind on the readings and it reflected on my test grades. His tests are very detailed but if you do the readings and study the notes, you'll be fine. I would recommend Dr. Cooney if you're willing to work.
Dr. Cooney is a good teacher overall, but he gives really long articles to read outside of class and his tests are way too specific for an intro class. The information is interesting, but I wouldn't take this class unless you have time to read for about 3 hours each week outside of class.
I really enjoyed taking his class. He loved the topic and knows everything about it. I am taking a class from him again. If you have the choice between the class presentation and the paper, do the presentation!
Professor Cooney is an AMAZING teacher. He is so knowledgable is willing to answer any question and will always help. Just read the readings and come to class and it is very possible to get an A. Class is also interesting.
Cooney has a really specific way of teaching, he does a lecture paired with a guided powerpoint that is really easy to follow that goes over what your reading assignment was. TAKE NOTES-- he usually will not post the slides. Class was super interesting. Tests are all off the in class notes and can be difficult if you dont study
It's not that bad I PROMISE, unless you're a sucky student. Just suck it up and do the reading, never skip class because a lot of test questions come from stuff he says in class and he doesn't post the powerpoints on line. But it's a very reasonable and interesting class. He's very pleasant and remembered my name. I got a nice A. Only 4 tests.
He structures class from his powerpoints, which are really easy to follow. You need to know the readings and the authors for the test. He's a very easy going guy, but he will call you out for using your phone during his lecture. Overall, as long as you study your lecture notes and the big points from the lecture you should pass.
Favorite professor. Very funny guy who knows his area of expertise. His lectures are really interesting. He doesn't post his slides, so you have to take notes. I debated taking this class, but I am so glad I did. Tests are somewhat hard, but definitely not tricky. Just study and put some effort in. Sometimes he adds bonus questions to boost grades.
Dr. Cooney was an excellent professor! He is witty, interesting, very intelligent, and his Irish accent makes it easier to pay attention for some reason.. The test format is a choice between an essay or multiple choice (only 2 tests). Only one paper, but the topic is pretty open for choice. He is also very passionate about the material.
Honestly a great class and teacher, I've taken him for many upper level classes also. Read the passages and take notes. His tests are the exact power points and passages. He explains everything clearly, and makes you interested. If you're lazy don't do it, but if you are willing to put in like two days work do it
I took him for 1101 and 4800 and both classes were amazing. He doesn't require attendance but it's pretty important to hear the lectures because he doesn't post notes. He's got a cool Irish accent too. He does about 4 tests based off the readings and lectures and their relatively straight forward, I definitely recommend him.
Professor Cooney is one of my favorite's this semester. Such a good lecturer and is easy to listen to because of his Irish accent. There isn't a textbook, but he assigns readings that are due before every class. Very straightforward tests over the readings and lecture notes. Doesn't put notes on ELC, so class is mandatory. Very good sense of humor.
Aslong as you show up to class and pay attention to the lectures you'll be fine. His powerpoints are word for word the notes you'll need. He puts the readings online and they're never too long or hard to read. If you show up, tests are easy. He doesn't want you to fail so the tests are pretty straightforward; choice btw multiple choice or essay.
I personally would not take this course. It's a harder class & no extra credit. He grades the essay tests easier and they are all based on the readings so if you know the readings inside and out you'd be fine. I never knew what to expect on the MC tests. You usually have two readings for homework with one possibly being about 30 pages long.
Cooney is by far my favorite professor this semester. He provides articles to read in lieu of a textbook and his power points are straight forward. Must go to class bc he doesn't post these power points online. He builds in extra questions into the tests so you can get over a 100. Tests are medium difficulty. He really cares for his students!!
He doesn't post lectures online so if you skip, you wont pass the class. The messed up thing about this class is that the lectures aren't bad and I liked Cooney. What messed me up was the exams. The questions screw with you and no matter how much I study, I have made Cs. DO NOT TAKE FOR EASY A, YOU WILL NOT GET IT. I regret not dropping this class.
You have 5-7 articles to read for each exam. The problem is: the articles range from 5-12 pages. They are boring and the tests ask nitty bitty questions about the articles and exams. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR AN EASY A. YOU WILL NOT GET IT. One tip: If anyone is selling notes, BUY THEM. He does not post lectures online and you need the notes.
Dr. Cooney is a great professor! Your grade is from 4 tests( you pick either mc or essay). Take detailed notes, actually read the readings (even though they are long) and you will do well! His tests are mostly straightforward, he also puts extra questions so you can receive more 100. He really cares and has a great Irish accent so take him!
He is a nice professor, but he does not post any of the notes. It would be easy if I had no other classes, but this class is too in-depth and too much of a time commitment for an intro course unrelated to my major. Always show up and be prepared to answer specific questions about the readings. I made A's in my upper level courses and a B- in this.
Took this class expecting to get an A or A-, i ended up with a B-. I think that the workload and detail of this class is too much for an intro class. Your grade consists of 4 tests which are based off of the lectures & about 5-7 articles posted on elc. Come to class because he doesnt post notes online and read the articles throughly to pass.
Dr. Cooney knows a lot about the subject and this reflects in his teaching. He doesn't allow laptops in class, but his lectures are usually pretty interesting that you want to pay attention the whole time. Long classes always went by fast to me. Do the reading, participate in class, respect him & he'll respect you.
Don't take this class if you don't want to put in extra work towards the readings and study specific material (ie: percentages). Lectures seemed long, but they were pretty interesting. Two tests (one 25% and one 30%) and the final which is 30% as well. If you don't do well on the test, you'll pretty much have a pre-destined grade.
I LOVE professor Cooney. He's a great lecturer and is very engaging. One of the reasons being that he doesn't use a textbook but he assignments very interesting articles for the class. Definitely need to go to every lecture because he doesn't post notes anywhere. Only two tests and a final in the class but with class notes and readings very doable
Dr. Cooney is an AMAZING professor, with seemingly infinite knowledge and a great sense of humor. It's a difficult Intro class, and involves a lot of reading (articles, not textbook), but his lectures are always a great experience, and his class has been awesome. Definitely not easy, but certainly worth the effort. Attendance taken daily.
Professor Cooney is a great lecturer. He used Tophat this semester and the questions came from the readings (1-2 readings assigned each class, about 10 pages average). Our grades came from attendance, the Tophat questions, and three tests (choice between essay and multiple choice). Extra credit on the tests. Read all the readings closely.
I loved taking his intro class. He doesnt post the lectures online most of the time and there isnt a textbook, so its really important to go to class, however the lectures are interesting and engaging. If you do the reading and show up to the lectures, youre bound to get an A.
Dr. Cooney is very enthusiastic about sociology. His lectures are powerpoint based, and he doesn't post these online. He also takes attendance through TopHat and had daily quizzes based on our article readings. Would 100% suggest reading the articles before class, and especially brushing up on them for tests.
As long as you read all the readings and take notes during lectures (ppt based, not posted online) you should do well. The tests are easy. Your grade is based on tests & attendance/participation. He asks really easy questions on tophat everyday to make sure you read the reading he posts on elc. Study the readings before tests & you'll do fine.
Dr. Cooney is an awesome professor! His lectures are interesting and insightful. The readings assigned after class are a must if you want to do well on tests and fully understand the following lectures.
Cooney is a good lecturer. He made the class pretty interesting. He makes you read a bunch of stuff, but you can honestly pass without it if you pay attention in class. The tests were super easy. I put very minimal effort into this class, and I still got an A. Would recommend.
Dr. Cooney is a great professor. His class definitely isn't easy though. The concepts are difficult and there's a lot of reading, but he tries to explain everything as clearly as he can. Be prepared to think deeply and focus on your readings. He's highly respected in his field, and his accent makes the lectures.
Don't take his class his format for test is on Tophat and you can't change your answers when your in the class. 3 test heavy graded , his lectures are great but his tests are awful don't take him I dropped the class.
He is a really nice, funny guy but he gives really detailed tests as well as assigns about 10 pages of reading for homework. He makes you work for it. Only 3 tests but each is worth 30% of your grade.
This class is not an easy A, so don't expect to skip lectures and readings and still do good on tests. But if you pay attention during lectures and do the readings on time, you'll do fine! Tests are ok, but if you don't do well on one, he gives extra credit on the 2nd test and the final so you can bring it up. Really interesting and well-taught!
Professor Cooney lectured a lot, but then his test would only cover the reading done outside of class. I have never made a C in my life, but there is a first for everything. Take a different professor if you can.
This class is definitely not as easy as I thought it would be but it is very informative and interesting. Professor Cooney cares about his students and his broad knowledge of sociology is evident in his lectures. This class will provide you with vital knowledge about today's society. If you read and take notes on the readings you will do well.
Cooney was a pretty cool professor; he is super passionate about sociology. Class consisted of lectures and taking notes from his PowerPoint. He doesn't post the PowerPoints on eLC often, if at all. Attendance is taken from TopHat, and he usually does reading check type of questions online. Tests are also online, unless you want to write an essay.
Dr. Cooney was so funny and engaging. I enjoyed his lectures. Tests are the only grades so you have to prepare for them. There are assigned readings every night but they are pretty interesting and easy to read. The tests include a significant amount of material from the readings so you need to review them before the test. I recommend this class.
Great professor, very knowledgeable about his subject matter but tests and TopHat questions are heavily based on the assigned readings. You have multiple readings a week and many are 10+ pages. If you struggle with retaining information from readings , this may not be the professor for you. I dropped my sociology minor because of this class.
Here is the thing, this class can be an easy A if you show up to class and take notes. People complain about the readings, but they are actually pretty interesting, his TopHat questions are fair and are not too specific to the reading. If you study his notes, you will pass his tests with an A. I have taken him for three classes, all super easy.
This class is extremely test heavy. There is no textbook use, but there are readings for every lecture. You do have to put in a lot of time in for the class, but if you do, tests tend to be easier. However, tests are extremely specific (referencing subjects from lectures). Dr. Cooney is a great lecturer and seems very passionate about the subject.
I took Professor Cooney for an FYOS credit. The course was not my first choice, however I am so glad I got to take it. There are only two grades in the course, both being papers. With these papers he provides amazing feedback and makes it nearly impossible to not do well. He truly cares about his students and I would recommend taking this course.
Dr. Conney is smart, and he does not have a problem letting you know, like making snarky comments 24/7. There is a lot of readings (up to 4-6 a week, sometimes more) of academic articles, and the participation grading scheme is not transparent and hard to get an A in. Test are too hard and over complicated. It feels rigged against the student.
its an easy a if u go to class and skim the readings. the readings were usually long and super detailed. hes a quiet talker so it was hard to stay awake but super nice guy. tests arent too hard if u go to class and look at his powerpoints online
A good professor & knowledgable on his field. However, the class is very work-heavy for an intro class. My grade was combined of 3 tests and participation/attendance. Tests are VERY specific to his ppts and MANY, long readings for class each day. Overall, interesting, but difficult. Seems like a good man, but hard teacher for intro.
I would highly recommend! He is an entertaining lecturer (adorable Irish accent) and covers interesting material in a clear and effective manner. Articles to read every week but many are interesting though long. Posts powerpoints online. Easy Tophat questions if you read assigned articles. This was my best class of the semester. Easy A if you study
Professor Cooney is clearly very passionate about sociology and offers unique and diverse views of society. The class is based on 2-3 readings per week that you do before lectures, and he goes over the main points in class. The tests are solely based on the powerpoints and readings, so if you prepare well this class will be fun
Dr. Mark Cooney is an amazing professor. All of the tests are based on the readings and PowerPoints he shares with the class. All you need to do for this class is annotate the readings and look at the PowerPoints to pass this class. It may be a lot of work for some, but in reality most of the readings are easy and interesting. It is so easy- 10/10.
Professor Cooney is good at teaching you what you need to know for the tests, I just found the class really boring. The class was remote and I often didn't do any of the readings or lectures until the day of the test and still got an A in the class. Readings every night and your grade is composed of 5 tests. Do the work and it's an easy A.
Mark Cooney is a literal GEM! He's been one of my favorite professors here at UGA. The tests can be tricky, but if you're prepared, A's are definitely doable. All in all, a wonderful class that I'd definitely take again! And he's Irish! The accent (if anything) should keep you interested :)
This class was really easy and although we were supposed to do a lot of readings, the tests were open notes and I honestly did just fine (98) without having done them or even studying at all. The classes, which were only held once a week for us and were optional, were fairly interesting, but got a little political at times. I didnt like the TA.
Professor Cooney was my favorite professor this semester. Every week, we read one chapter of his book and discussed it in class, but participation was not graded. He gives great feedback on the rough draft to ensure you fo well on your final paper. I loved his class and it was more interesting than what I have heard other have to do.
I took this class during the pandemic, and Professor Cooney was such a joy to learn from! Even though his Zoom sessions weren't mandatory, he made them interesting enough to feel like I wasn't just staring at a screen. His grades are only off of the five tests and his lectures and required readings can be very lengthy, so beware of that.
Professor Cooney seems to care a lot about his students, he only had one zoom a week and it was not necessary to attend it. His class is based on powerpoints and readings, I found a lot of the readings to be very interesting and the lectures to be very helpful. The grade is comprised of 5 tests, so you have to do well on them. Overall, I liked him.
Interesting subject and a really great guy. Make sure to read all material for optimal results.
Great professor, very knowledgeable on sociology. Just have readings before each class. Tophat questions during class and tests are only grades. Very fun lectures.
THE BEST PROFESSOR YOU WILL EVER HAVE!! Wish he cld be my professor for all of college. The class is lecture-based and the tests are notes taken from the lecture. He has the most pure soul. He deserves the best. Best class.
There is no book, but he gives you different readings to read and the tophat questions he gives you the next class are on those readings. He gives 5 tests and tophat to get your final grade. As long as you go to class and study some before the tests, they are relatively straight forward. He is a very interesting professor and wants the best for you
Mark is fantastic - his lectures every day were very interesting!! Because it's a big lecture class, attendance/participation does not matter but you will miss the lecture and the TopHat question in class every day. Each test is about 15-25%, and there is a reading for class each night, so if you do the reading and go to class, it is actually fun!
Professor Cooney is such a passionate professor. You can tell he truly cares about his students and what he is teaching. Grades are based mainly on tests and top hat questions. There are 1-2 readings that you will cover in class that you must read prior to the lecture. Overall, if you do your work and attend class, you should make an A or A-.
Professor Cooney has amazing lectures, and he is very passionate about sociology making him a fine professor. His Irish accent and occasional humor will make you hang onto every word he says. He's a respectable man because he is always understanding of students. For this course as long as you listen & read the assigned readings expect a good grade.
Hes a great teacher but his text were hard to study for. Be ready to take a lot of notes too.
Mark is a really great professor who cares about both what he is teaching and his students. Do the readings before class and take the notes he presents and you'll be fine.
Dr. Cooney is a great professor! His SOCIO 1101 class isn't too bad as long as you do the readings. The readings are due before each class and then there is a topcoat question during class. Your grade comes from 4 online tests and TopHat questions. If you do the readings and take notes you will be golden.
Dr. Cooney is truly a passionate and caring professor. He has an amazing Irish accent and his lectures are intriguing. Has TopHat questions on readings during class (so make sure you go) that really aren't hard if you skim over them the morning before class. Exam questions come straight from the lecture notes. Only grades are 4 exams and THQ's.
His tests are very specific, so make sure you review all the readings and the notes thoroughly! He's a great professor and has a cute little Irish accent. The class was always super interesting!
Dr. Cooney is the best. STAN MARK! There are a lot of readings for this class, but most of them are fairly interesting and not too long. His tests can be a bit tricky, but if you've done the readings and taken notes on his lectures, you should be just fine. Also, a Tophat subscription is needed; he asks questions in lecture based on the readings.
I loved this course and Dr. Cooney! There are a lot of readings, but they're pretty easy to understand and not too long. He has Top Hats you have to do in class and your only other grades are your tests, but if you take notes on the readings and lectures you'll be fine. The tests are online.
Difficult because based on four tests, and the readings are lengthy. However lectures were really interesting and the subjects were captivating. I enjoyed it and enjoyed his lectures, just make sure you do your top hat questions.
Cooney is a solid professor and for the most part I enjoyed his lectures. Class isn't mandatory but he talks through topics that enhance your understanding of the material. Grade comes directly from 4 test and clicker questions so be prepared. Tests come directly from readings and clicker questions. Know how to read and you'll be fine.
Literally the most enjoyable class I took so far. He is so genuine about his students and is passionate about his class. It is pretty reading heavy, but most of them are easy to read. Stay on top of the readings because some questions on the tests come directly from them. Take good notes during his lectures and read over them before every test.
He is one of the sweetest professors ever! He gives 4 tests and outlines them very well, all are taken on eLC. Lectures were interesting and overall super easy class. Never any homework to turn in.
He's very funny, loves the field, very passionate about the subject. If you're lucky, he'll dance for the class. The course can be a little rough at some patches, but overall it was fantastic.
Prof. Cooney is wonderful. I took his terrorism class and it was very cool. His grading is simple with 3 exams, 1 final or presentation (you pick), and participation. His teaching style is to the point and simple so his exams are the exact same way. They are pretty detailed so make sure to read the articles & follow along with powerpoints
very kind, good lectures, doesn't go to fast or too slow, keeps it interesting, def read the readings and take lecture notes, but it is easy overall as long as you do that, he mentions the readings in class and lectures on related topics but it is not too similar to the point where the lectures are pointless
He's really nice and passionate about the subject. Easy A elective if you take the notes. Tests are easy if you go over the lecture notes. He took attendance via tophat so you do have to go to get those points. Only other assignments are discussions and he posts pre-class readings and he does test you over them.
Nice professor who is passionate about the subject but I would not take this class if you want an easy intro class for this subject. It's a lot of readings you have to read and answer a question on via TopHat every day. The tests are very PowerPoint heavy and sometimes have very specific measurements. Wouldn't take him again but he is a great guy!
If you skip class, you likely wont pass as he does attendance questions every lecture and combined theyre worth almost the same as a test. Good lectures and usually lets you out early
What you need to know There are 4 tests, total, no final. Study the class ppts, and you're ok. There are 4 discussion posts. Write as much as you can and you'll get 10/10. There are readings, I'd skim them- not reading them could hurt you on tests. Attendance is checked by TopHat. If you skip, get someone to tell you when 1 comes. Overall easy A
Cooney is a funny, down to Earth dude and an engaging lecturer. There are a ton of notes to keep up with, so be ready to write fast. There is also a good amount of reading to prepare for the next lecture as well as a Top Hat question about the reading for points. There are 4 tests (all online) which are not hard as long as you study. Take him!
He is an amazing professor. He is down to Earth, passionate about Sociology, and just generally very humorous and caring. You do have to read something before each class but it'll only be around 6 pages of an article. Not bad at all and the topics are usually very interesting. Grading is easy and the tests are word-for-word his lecture slides.
I loved his class. Very interesting, but the course is only graded by tophat questions, 4 tests, and 4 discussion posts. He was always engaging and very easy to follow along. I would recommend this course to others.
The test are fairly easy, as long as you pay attention in his lectures and do the homework reading. His lectures are a little boring but they could be worse. Overall, hes pretty good.
Genuinely cares about students, lectures are long but helpful, and tests are solely based on notes and lectures which are easy to follow. Attendance is mandatory but worth going to. He is very wholesome and is passionate about what he is teaching. I would definitely take a class of his again.
Try to get really good grades throughout the class (each point matters). I would attend all lectures, because there are tophat questions. Getting an A can be hard because you can only miss 20 out of 300 points (280/300). There are 4 tests (online). There is 4 discussion posts which are really easy.
Prof. Cooney was amazing all semester. His lectures truly made me look forward to going to his class. There are assigned readings for before every class which you will answer a top hat on in class to make sure you're there/actually read. Thanks for a great semester.
He is an awesome professor. I would take him again, but would study a little more for the tests. They're not bad, but I should have prepared.
Class was fairly easy and lectures were decently interesting. Attendance was taken through in-class TopHat questions on the assigned readings that could be taken from home. Grade was based on four tests which weren't incredibly difficult but definitely required more preparation than I'd thought.
Cooney is a very sweet and reasonable professor who cares a lot about sociology. The content was often kind of surface level, but it was a fine intro class. Grading consists of tophat reading questions for attendance, tests (largely based on powerpoints), and discussion posts. Super easy and straightforward.
Overall I would recommend taking this class. Attendance isn't technically mandatory but there is a question asked on TopHat for a grade each class about the reading for that day (missing a few isn't a big deal). Tests are online and not bad as long as you did the readings. He posts powerpoints after class so missing won't set you behind.
The tests are word for word from the powerpoints. Only thing is every class its just a lecture where he reads from the powerpoint and each class there is like 30-40 slides with random information with no real organization. I attended almost every lecture and read but such difficult time remembering that one random detail on one of the 1000 slides.
There's a "pop question" on tophat during class every day, and take them seriously as they can make or break your grade. Lots of readings throughout the course, but he covers them in class so I found that it's okay to just copy his notes on the readings. Each test has several subjective questions which were frustrating.
Cooney is such a sweet guy and explained the material well. Lectures could get a little boring but the tests aren't bad as long as you take notes and do the readings (all tests are online). Make sure you do all the tophats even if you don't go to class.
Take the tophat questions seriously - didn't realize they were graded on accuracy, not just participation, until the end of the semester. Dr. Cooney is very knowledgable, but lectures are somewhat dry at times. The tests aren't terrible, but sometimes questions are misleading and hard to understand. Neither the best or worst class I've taken at UGA
He's nice and his lectures are interesting. Tests are online. You have to read a reading before each class but it's not bad. Attendance is taken thru tophat questions which count towards your grade but are usually easy. I have nothing bad to say about him. Super easy class and he usually lets us leave early
Awesome dude. You will do completely fine if you pay attention and at least skim the readings.
Great man and I love his passion for sociology. NO homework except skimming chapters and making ONE presentation. You have little time to write the first draft of the final paper, but you have more time to revise. I suggest you start that as soon as possible. Overall a very sweet man who wants to hear about your week every class. Love him.
A great lecturer and so passionate. Very interesting content. All tests are online and have a few simple discussion posts throughout the semester. Required Top Hat questions based on readings every day, I found that he discusses the readings in class so wasn't very necessary to read. Genuinely such an awesome guy and couldn't recommend him more.
Definitely attend class for the Top Hat questions, it is important to help boost your grade. Tests can be slightly challenging but they are online (no class on test days). Cooney has a powerpoint for each class and posts them afterwards for students to view. There are 4 discussion posts that are always easy points towards you grade.
Genuinely cares about sociology and is really into lecturing- all the powerpoint are posted online and tests are word for word from them. go to class for top hat questions based on readings that are easy to get right if you know the general topic. tests are always online and no class on test days
He is the best professor i've had by far. He is so understanding and really cares about his students. I will miss him!
Really nice guy and a great lecturer, he's pretty interesting to just listen to honestly. Doesn't give out a ton of work, pretty much the only homework is discussion posts, and tests aren't anything crazy. Cares about his students, for the last test I got my dates mixed up and accidentally didn't take it and he opened it up for me the next day.
His grading scale and criteria is perfectly clear. Attendance is necessary because he does TopHat which counts your presence and daily grade. The TopHat questions relate to the readings that we do every week. He gives four quizzes and one discussion per month. He does not provide extra credit, and he will encourage you to "step your game up."
He is very understanding and cares about his students. Attendance was mandatory as we had a Top-Hat question on the assigned readings every class. Test are slightly challenging and require you to understand the assigned readings, but we don't have class on test days. He does not provide any extra credit.
Dr. Cooney is a very nice man who truly loves what he does. Lectures were interesting; exams were easy. Attendance/participation matters more than you think, so try not to skip too often.
Cooney was OK. His lectures are just him reading (verbatim) from the power points which is just not for me. I felt like most of the grading scale in his class was from the tests so if you studied enough you should be ok. He's a nice guy who actually cares about his students but I just found his class so boring (especially for a tu/thurs class).
super easy class but can be boring. not much grading, just on discussion posts (extremely easy), top hat questions for attendance, and tests. exams can be a little challenging bc some questions are from readings. overall easy class if u go to class and skim over reading
Prof Cooney was a great professor and I would definitely take him again. Attendance is mandatory and can help your grade a lot!
Sweetest old guy ever. Tophats were used for attendance and can make or break grade. Discussion posts are easy 100s. All exams were online and not open note (done at home so "technically" not open note). Cracked some funny jokes and the content itself was easy to follow. He wrote his own books and that made it more engaging. Good intro class.
Great professor, doing readings before class is important as well as being engaged in lectures and taking notes. The ONLY problem I had in this class was how relaxing his irish accent is XD i found myself frequently wanting to fall asleep but the material is truly interesting
This was a great class. There was a good chunk of reading with daily tophat quizzes. Be ready to read at a close enough level to remember niche info for exams.
Cooney is so sweet and funny!! I was often falling asleep during his lectures unfortunately as he tends to drag on about the same things. However, he made the class as simple as possible. Tests are online, with no lockdown browser.
Dr. Cooney is the sweetest guy. His global terrorism class was super interesting and not too hard. Not too much reading and if you take notes the tests are easy. He is super helpful and wants the best for his students, I suggest taking him.
Dr. Cooney is seriously the best. He really cares about his students and wants you to do well. I enjoyed his power points and how he made the class into more of a story rather than just random facts. The tests are online but they were kind of tricky. Overall great and will take him again if i can
He is super sweet and genuinely cares about the subject. Uses tophat for attendance and posts all the slides after class. His tests r online, I do not know why I never got a good grade on his exams but that is a me issue and nothing he could have done for that.
Loved him for global terrorism (4700?). Nightly reading, lectures in class. Attendance not taken by Top Hat questions in class every day. Three online tests and one research paper. Do the readings, take notes in class, and you'll be fine. Interesting class and he brings great insight! Love Dr. Cooney!
Professor Cooney is a sweet, engaging lecturer. The class is fairly straightforward - easy assignments, manageable exams, and helpful attendance/participation policy. I found Unstuck study great for boosting my study efficiency.
He's a sweet guy, but the lectures were really boring. His Irish accent could put me to sleep. The tests were hard for no reason and I think that his answer key was wrong. Tests are online no lockdown browser, and he does TopHat for attendance.
I had Professor Cooney for my FYO, and he was amazing. FYOS' are meant to be an easy A and this is exactly what it was. You can tell that he is passionate on what he is talking about, so lectures were fun to pay attention to. The only work is a group presentation and a final essay, so the work load was very minimal.
Dr. Cooney greatly cares about the class and what he is teaching. The class is fairly easy however you are graded on few things. Dr. Cooney does Tophat each class, which is a good portion of your grade. The tests are few questions but on ELC with no lockdown browser.
Professor Cooney for SOCI1101 was great! Lectures can get a bit boring and monotone, but as long as you keep taking notes, you'll be perfectly fine and won't fall asleep. There's almost one TopHat question per lecture day so reading the given material is highly recommended! Exams are at-home for 24 hours but are strictly timed. No stress needed.
Cooney is very sweet and a great professor. About 2-3 readings a week for Top Hat questions in class, which do count towards your grade, but you can skim *most* (not all) of the readings and be prepared for class. Take him!!
I LOVE him! He's so passionate and does a great job at making lectures entertaining. I honestly loved taking him and signed up to take another class with him in the fall. Get ready to read before each class but tbh I skimmed over all of them and I was fine
Clearly very knowledgeable about sociology but this was very bland class being that it was in a giant lecture hall. I feel like sometimes he would talk for 30 minutes and say 1 meaningful thing. You have to pay $40 for TopHat just for in-class attendance questions. Discussion posts are easy points, tests are generally easy but none are dropped.
He was the sweetest guy ever. The exams were straight forward. There were a lot of readings to do and tophat questions based on them during class (also taken as attendance). The tophats are really easy though. He doesn't offer and extra credit. I thought it was a pretty easy class I would recommend.
Dr.Cooney was my favorite professor this semester! He is very passionate about sociology and makes the course overall really easy to understand. There are 4 discussion posts, 4 tests (4th test is the final and all the tests are online, so he cancels class for that day), and he takes attendance with Tophat so it's best to be at lectures.
Top hat was used for participation. Tests were all online with no lockdown (had all day to complete), super easy discussion questions with a week or more to complete, overall very passionate. He is hard of hearing but you get used to it.
Dr. Cooney is friendly & the material is not hard to understand. HOWEVER, Cooney is tricky with his exams, changing one little word in the question to get you. My BIGGEST COMPLAINT is that he doesnt give enough time on exams—only a minute per question. Its hard when u have to remember an answer from an older reading but only have a few seconds.
Prof Cooney is a great professor, highly recommend taking 3830. Tests are at home online, but they are quite tricky still. One paper at the end. Every class there is a "pop question" (Top hat) to ensure you both come to class and did the reading. Can easily do well if you do the readings and go to class. He loves the topic, and is a quite nice dude
Dr. Cooney was great. He cares very deeply in his lectures and it's evident. Participation is taken through Tophat, which is weighted pretty heavily so don't miss too much. The readings are pretty dense, and the tests are tough. But if you keep up with your Tophat and discussions you don't need to ace the tests for a good grade.
super great guy and easy class. its important to go and get tophat points, i didn't and it brought my grade down a fair amount
super sweet, really interesting, actually cares ab students, easy homework
Professor Cooney is an average teacher. His classes are solely lectures; he uses TopHat to grade your attendance. His lectures can be pretty boring as he doesn't have great organization. However, all his tests are online, and you can get good grades if you work hard. Also he is Irish which is fun
The course definitely challenged me, but it was really interesting. He is very respected in the field of sociology and very knowledgeable. Tests were tricky, but they were on ELC/take home. Daily TopHat questions based on readings can sometimes be hard. He has high expectations, but he is a GREAT professor. Definitely have to work for your grade.
He is a very sweet and kind professor. I had him for my FYOS so it was a bit different from a normal class, however it was easy. I loved the content we learned and it was very eye opening. The class is structured in a student led presentation way so be prepared to present. As long as you put in the effort you will be good!!!
Professor Cooney was really kind and obviously passionate about his line of work. I took his FYOS class about family honor violence, and it was very interesting! There was weekly readings, one group project, and one essay that composed of the class. Overall, it was a really interesting class, and Professor Cooney was very nice.
The course was pretty solid & simple overall. Lectures weren't bad, and were fairly interesting at points if you're into sociology at all. The test questions can be tricky since they are super niche questions from lecture, but they are online and at home. Only uses TopHat, but will ask questions during class for attendance so you gotta be there.
You are assigned to read an article or 2 before every class. READ THEM!!! In class he uses tophat about the articles and your tophat grade is 20% of your grade. Getting an A in tophat will help a lot. Online quizzes, discussion posts that are graded easy, interesting lectures, but lots of reading.
Dr. Cooney is a great teacher who clearly cares about what he is teaching. His lectures are easy to understand, and not boring, especially if you like sociology. Tests are relatively easy and they are online and taken at home. There are a lot of readings, but they are short and easy to understand. Loved his class!
go to class do the reading and do the top hat you'll get an A. stay on top of your work you'll be fine. he's a rly nice guy super interested in what he's teaching and the readings/lectures can be interesting. the tests are online and kinda easy if you go to class and use the readings.
graded on participation with tophat questions on readings every class. tests are online but you still have to study
Professor Cooney is passionate about what he's teaching. He's a great professor, and his lectures opened me up to a new perspective. The exams are easy as long as you take notes. Make sure you come to class because there are Top Hat questions that he uses for attendance. You have the option of doing an essay or presentation. Both aren't difficult.
Overall good professor. Attendance is a big part of the grade, which I find is a little unfair when the class can easily be self-taught. Not really any incentive to go to class other than for the attendance grade. Attendance is also worth more in the grade book than one of the tests, which I found a little weird. Still a good lecturer.
I love Dr.Cooney. He really loves what he does and what he teaches. I took him for SOCI 4700 – Global Terrorism (they didn't have that option on here). You are graded by TopHat attendance (which is easy if you just do the readings), three exams, and a final paper. He really tries to explain things in a way that is easy to understand. He is amazing!
This was a great class, and Dr. Cooney is a great professor. The tests are very easy if you pay attention during the lectures and read the articles that he posts on eLC. Take this class if you can!
Very nice guy and it is easy to see his passion for sociology. Tophat questions on the readings are pretty crucial for your grade, so make sure you attend class even though it isn't required. Discussion posts are very easy as well and are the only other grades besides online take-home tests.
Take Dr. Cooney!!! He is so sweet, and his class is very easy. All tests are online (no lockdown browser), and there are a few discussion posts. He also uses top hat for attendance, so you kinda have to go, but you can always guess the answer from home. This class was an easy A and I recommend him a lot!!
A fantastic professor! His lectures were straightforward and interesting, and all exams were online! A very easy A as long as you do the weekly readings! He is a very caring guy that has a true passion for sociology. Take his class!
Lectures are long and pretty boring. He's very knowledgeable and answers questions thoroughly. Tophat sucks though. Questions are confusing sometimes and if you get excused absences from class it hurts your grade. Tests are easy and all online
SOCI 1101 is a very easy class and should be an easy A. Tests were all take-home, with no lecture on the day of. There are only 4 discussion posts, and 4 tests, so doing well on each is important, but very easy. There is a reading, or 2, before each lecture so be ready to read. TopHat questions are used for attendance. Lectures are great.
Professor Cooney is super passionate about sociology, and he cares about his students despite it being a lecture class. Tests are all online, there are a few discussion posts during the semester, and he uses tophat for attendance and in-class questions. Read the assigned readings before class!!!!!
Dr. Cooney was excellent! You could tell how passionate he was about sociology and how much he cared about his students. There was no homework, only readings and discussion posts. Tests are virtual but he does take attendance by Tophat about the readings. Lectures were long but could be engaging depending on the topic. Highly recommend him!
Loved Professor Cooney! He's so so smart. Just get ready to read every night before class or become great friends with NotebookLM. He also has in-class-only TopHat questions every class, so attendance is kind of mandatory because the TH questions impact your grade. But love Cooney! Love how he can't hear well lol.
He's passionate, he's a good speaker, and everything is very easy. Sometimes the readings suck and they were easy for me to forget about, but often I enjoyed reading them and they're always short. Tophat everyday. I felt bad for him because no one would answer his questions in class, so answer his questions. And whatever you do, don't leave early
Dr. Cooney was amazing! I took him for SOCIO 1101 and it was a great class. He assigns readings, but they are not difficult at all. His tests are all online (no lockdown browser), and they are not hard at all. The only thing is you have to go to class because he uses top hat and you don't want to get points off for that. Overall amazing teacher!
His lectures are on interesting topics, and you can tell he is very passionate about the subject he teaches. I never had trouble following along and his readings are typically not that long but are required for his class, tophat points, and tests. The tests are easy; the only thing is that there are no drops or extra credit available.
I loved him as a professor, he was very passionate about what he was talking about. The only grades were 4 discussion post, 3 tests, and a final, and the tests are online. The only thing you have to do in class is take notes and voluntarily answer a question if he asks. I would take him again, I think he is such a genuine sweet man.
I love him so much, he is so sweet and really passionate about what he teaches. He assigns readings that you are supposed to read before class everyday but they are not that long. Please answer his questions in class (no one every does and it made me so sad). I feel like he's just naturally funny as well. Just 4 discussion posts, 3 tests, and final
The tests are very easy because you can take them on your own accord at any point of the day, so, not much pressure. Although, you can't really miss any classes without it hurting your grade a lots since he uses TopHat. Overall he's a very good lecturer and you can tell he's passionate about what he does.
Dr. Cooney is a good professor, however some of the content is challenging including the way he writes tests, they are take-home but I always used up all of the time. He uses his own sociological theory, and I found it hard to follow. The TopHat questions are difficult and there are only a few so make sure to attend every class and do the reading.
