Excellent Prof!!
the class could be a LOT worse - and know your jerseys
No cool accent like most geog profs but easily one of the best
No Comments
Not a total self-absorbed putz, unlike all Geography students
Sexy votes eh... must be all those jersey's.

Boring
Perhaps the most helpful prof at the UofR and one of the nicest smartest profs
Good class to catch up on a lot of sleep. Seems like a good guy. Expensive way to catch a little shut eye.
Very boring prof and class. Although very nice guy, and always willing to help. Wastes a lot of class time.
EXCELLENT! This guy is good...and for everyone Into Hockey I swear he has worn every jersey!!! He's a cool proff...easy class....labs are easy!
I have never enjoyed a class more! Cote rocks! Easy to understand and easy to pass... His storys and pictures help alot. Heres to the most interesting class I have taken. Thanks Mark.
A pretty good class for first timers, he's a great prof to go to for help and he repeats himself (if you don't catch it the first time)
GREAT prof, love the jerseys, good sense of humour, tests are sooo easy if studied for, labs are easy too but can be time consuming
Mark, you are such a winer. All the comments made about you are good ones! Your classes are good and you are not boring. The dumbasses that say that just suck at university and have to blame somebody but themselves. Keep up the good work!!!
He's very disorganized. Class always starts late, but at least its easy. He thinks he's teaching introduction to university.
Most amazing, helpful professor. Take this class, pay attention, try to put a reasonable amount of studying in and you will get at least an %80! Best class I have ever been through!
Very easy prof to follow. And if you study and pay attention, the class is easy to get a good mark in!
He is such a fabulous man. I admire him so much! As well he is not to bad on the eyes! (ur hot Mr. Cote and you know it!!!) His environemetal class was great!!
terrible class!!!!!!!!! he makes you want to sleep during the entire thing!
One of the best profs that I've had!
NOT one of the best profs I've had. Analysing weather maps was a waste of time (for 45 minutes daily!).
labs are extremly easy and can be done in 10min. but his mid terms are hard becuase you don;t know what to expect. don't be surpirsed if u study forever and think ur ready, and come out of it with a 50.but his final is the same kind of thing so its easier
Probably the coolest teacher at the university. He must own a jersey from each NHL team. Funny guy who knows his stuff and makes the class fun. It's easy to do well in his class.
Great prof! The material wasn't hard at all, he was funny and kept it interesting. Great class overall.
Man Mark is awesome, If you show up to class and copy a ton of notes, you'll do well in his class. Make note of when he wears his hockey jerseys, they can come back for a bonus mark.
Mark is a great guy but it is sometimes difficult to pay attention in his class because he doesn't really include people in his lectures, he just talks about what he knows, and he knows it extremely well. All in all he is a good prof who is willing to help if you need it, just make sure on his midterms you define every single word you write.
although his is distracting with his finger on his chin and wears one of his thousand hockey jerseys everyday, he is a good guy once you get to know him. lectures a lot, but as long as you copy notes and listen, you will do fine. he is always willing to help as well
Material in class is good although text book not required to open. No help what so ever if asked questions, odd marker and vary objective. Beleaves he is the best thing to hit geography since sliced bread. He cannot string thoughts together at all making hard to pay attention to.
Mark Cote is the worst professor I have encountered, so far, at the U of R. He teaches from the text book and presents out dated statistics in his lectures. By trade is an atmospheric specialist and judging by his lectures, he may have enhaled to much ozone. If you want to waste $500 and a semester worth of education, take this class.
Took a meteorology class from him, and he was saying that global warming is just a natural blip in time. So wierd that this is the guy teaching meteorology in the geography department! A bit of an outdated, odd view, kind of like if the u of r had a holocaust denier teaching history.. Oh well!
He cant answer any questions you ask him....he will say something that has nothing to do with what u ask and he sends you off more confused than you already were!!!...DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFF!!!!!!!......BEN CECIL IS MUCH BETTER (ONE OF MY FAVORITES..i got a 80% with him)
great prof. funny but dry sense of humour. all you have to do is go to every class, and you will do fine. his notes are oral, so attendance is key. other than that, workload is reasonable, and tests are not hard, given you went to class, and took notes. the biggest collection of hockey jersey's i've ever seen. passionate about geography.
kind of boring, drawn out lectures... lots of repetition, but very helpful and nice on webCT and email.
Lectures are pretty slow and not super-organized. Mark was quite approachable and friendly, had a good sense of humor, and was very laidback. Assignments were pretty easy, though the written assignment was tougher. Marking was more than fair. Exams were pretty easy if you showed up at lectures and took some decent notes.
Most Boring Class Ever. Absolutely horrible. If you go to class you will do good. But seriously so boring!
Mark is really approachable. If you have any problems he will be willing to help you out at anytime. However he is pretty...plain. His lectures are kinda boring. Everything in the class is easy as long as you attend. Sit by a friend, laugh when he tries, and will someone count how many jerseys this guy owns?
good prof, very understanding. he knows his facts but has a dry sense of humor. class attendance is key, over all, a decent prof. take note of his jerseys (it'l come in handy later on)
Mark is a good prof. Very approachable if you are stuck on a question in an assignment. His tests though, make sure you are prepared to write a lot! Lectures often got boring but it is not his fault that stats is not entertaining! PS bonus marks if you can tell him on the final which jersey's he wears during the semester!
TERRIBAD. Verbal diarreah leaks out of the hole on his face contridicting 95% of the main stream scientists on the planet in an attempt to make his work appear ground breaking and revolutionary. Avoid.
Very boring class..Every class was powerpont slides and lecturing. Basically notes notes notes. Write down mostly what he says including everything on the slides. I found his midterm has a lot of questions i felt were not covered a lot. Attendence is key. A lot of "uhm's" and spaces in his speech.
Is a nice enough guy but he expects a lot. Understanding concepts is key for tests and he marks more critically than other 100 level profs would.
Pretty much your average cliche uni class. Lectures + slides + notes = boredom. He demands clarity on long answers of exams. The only thing i liked was his massive selection of nhl jerseys
Geog100 suppose to be a world regional geography class not the damn meteorology class.Only buy one Altas book not the other one becuase u will never use it!! How can Faculty of Arts allow this guy mess up the 100 level Geog class.
Very boring, very easy. Text are all available in the map library, save your money. Get the notes, memorize the notes and you will be fine. Assignments are easy and quick.
Oh my goodness very boring class, but he is a super approachable guy. Honestly one of the most boring classes ever, not that weather patterns are interesting, but come on. And he wears a different NHL jersey every day. Is this professional?
Suuuuuuper boring class. Very dull class. like EXTREMELY dull class. Says "uh" every second word. Hard to understand. Assignments are laid out so its easy to understand, he can have that. Don't really understand how the the content he was teaching was "world geography"......
Yawn! Most people at one time or another have to take a class like this. I thought it was horrible how behind we got... you're expected to do assignments which he touches on during the lecture, but the concepts regarded in the assignment are never in depth talked about.... hes not overly professional.
Very boring and vague. I was somewhat interested in Geography before taking this class...now I do not want to take another Geography class again.
One of the most boring classes I have ever taken. He is very unclear about what he wants and then expects alot on assignments and exams. On the written assignment and lab assignments better make sure you cite everything down to the smallest detail or else he will get you for academic misconduct...most professors aren't that hardcore.
He's VERY flexible and helpful, not picky. You have 3 assignments and a paper. Make sure you cite EVERYTHING or you'll be in a real trouble. Assignments are tough. He doesn't cover in the class what he's asking in his assignments, but after you do them, you start to understand the most complex topics of this class.
Midterm and Final are long and hard. He tells exactly what he expects. Remember his jerseys and, especially, from the last day. You have a bonus question in Final, which worth 5 points if you answer it. You are not going to use the textbook, unless you want to read it, but you need your Atlas. Don't miss his classes and take notes of EVERYTHING!
Mark is an awesome prof! He'll make time for any and all questions that his students have. Although, it is true that he expects alot from his students in the form of assigments and test. HOWEVER, he will give you extra help whenever you need it. Also, he gets a bad rep. for some "quirky" characterisitcs. I think they make him that much better!
1st day of class, his exact words were "if you are able to write everything i say and from the textbook, you will get a 75 at best". he's very boring and expects you to know more than is possible. assignments were long & unrelated to class material. 2-part midterm was long & hard (1 part/class). power point NOT posted on URcourses.
Good guy, good class. Just pay attention to the hockey jerseys. There are bonus marks involved.
He will help you as much as you want. Midterm wasn't easy. Assignments are challenging. Super interesting class. He doesn't post any info about the class online, you have to take notes. Book is useless. The only reason why I still in this class is cuz Mark is a great person.
Nice guy. Easy Assignments. Boring class. tough midterm but an easy final. Only buy the required atlas not the text.
Really hard midterm, assignments aren't bad but don't relate much to class material, and the written assignment will make you cry like a little girl. Only buy the atlas.
He has a photographic memory & I think forgets sometimes that most people don't. Fairly difficult class, labs are reasonable if you put the effort in and midterm was laid out well. There is a lot of material to cover in such a short time, which makes it difficult to choose what to study. He is very approachable and willing to help whenever needed
mark is a very nice individual, but his teaching skills are mediocre. he has memorized his entire class and gets very confused if you ask a question (to which he rarely has an answer). the tests are very subjective and marked hard, the assignments take a while but are otherwise relatively easy.
super nice, but a very boring lecturer. his tests are based off of short/long answer only, and expects you to know beyond the material. notes aren't posted online either
Mark believes students enter his class with prior knowledge of geography. He marks hard. He expects a lot from student. He uses Power Points, but he doesn't post them only. So you better be good at note taking because you need to write down the slides and what he is saying or you are screwed. Also don't buy the textbook only the atlas.
He expects students to have a prior level of 300 going into the class. The written assignment is mark atrociously, cite every sentence or you will fail and do not use "biased sources". He is boring to listen to and does not do well with helping his students out. If you want to succeed in Geography 100 then I would recommend a different professor.
RUN WHILE YOU CAN. I am being serious everyone, he will make your semester very unpleasant. He uses power points and does not post them, therefore class attendance is a good idea. He also expects your to write down every word that leaves his mouth. His exams are laid out in a complicated and annoying way and are very hard.
Mark is a very sweet person and is super understanding. His exams are very hard for a first year class and he expects a lot from his students. He requires two textbooks but the only mandatory one was the atlas. Hard to hear and his powerpoints are not posted online.
Mark is awesome. He really wants all of his students to succeed. He likes to joke around and tries to get to know everyone, but gets the job down. Very knowledgeable about the subject. Assignments and tests are very interesting, but still expects you to work for it. One of the best classes I've taken!
He didn't seem to realize that some people have never taken geography before.I couldn't understand a word he said 90% of the time and I would sit in the front, trying to understand. Labs are very confusing. It seemed like everyone wasn't sure about what to do. If you are taking this class because you need something with a lab, run!
He is always open to questions during class, and questions about the labs. Attendance is really important because he doesn't post much for notes or use a lot of powerpoint, usually just posts graphics if he shows them. He can be a tough grader, but he is also very clear in what he expects. Overall hes very helpful and wants students to succeed.
Lectures were nothing special, but you knew what was expected in the class. He has a odd sense of humor but still funny none the less. Would take another class as him as the prof but I'd want to take a class with a little more interest to me.
Love Mark! Took GEOG 121 with him and taking GEOG 321 with him in the winter. Very clear on what he expects and will make time for you if you have any questions! Highly recommend!
Good prof that obviously knows what he is teaching. Very tough grader, more like a 200 or 300 level course than an introductory one. Would not recommend if you are not passionate about geography.
Overall a very good professor. I took GEOG 121 with Mark this fall and am taking GEOG 321 with him this winter. Mark is a really nice guy that wants to see all of his students succeed, and he is also extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subjects he teaches. He can be a somewhat tough grader. Class attendance is VERY important.
I would not take another class with him. First, his questions were vague and hard to answer since you didn't know what he was asking, and his expectations were unrealistic (he wanted you to know 400 level science info for a 200 arts). Second, it took him 2+ months to get anything back. I only received 1 of 4 marks by the last week. Unacceptable.
Mark has been my favorite Professor so far, having taken 2 classes with him so far. While he can be a tough grader, it is possible to get high grades because he gives so much feedback with each assignment and test (but do take a long time to get back). He cares about the students and is passionate about his work. A fun and enjoyable environment!
This class isn't super hard if you actually apply yourself. Our class had the lowest midterm average that he had seen in 27 years (52%). I thought it was funny because i got a 88%. Anyways, he sometimes is a tough grader but he gives super great feedback. He is very funny, too. Pay attention to the jerseys. Textbook helps with projects alot.
Mark was a great prof. Lectures at times were boring, but other than that this was a great class. He gives great feedback on assignments and is always open to any questions you may have. He also has a great sense of humour.
Mark is a great prof. He really puts your success into your own hands and looks out for you as an individual. I enjoyed his class and he makes super funny comments/references. His assignments are fun to complete as well. If you need GES 100, take it with Mark over anyone else.
The lecture was not mandatory, but his lecture was very boring. The materials given are very concise and not responsible enough.
meh... very lax with due dates and super fun to listen to but he takes forever to mark stuff. I still haven't received some grades as I'm writing this. term papers are super annoying but other class work can be kinda fun. not an easy class but not super hard either. lectures can become somewhat boring after a while
Lectures are quite boring, he has a very monotone voice which can make it difficult to pay attention
Mark was clearly passionate about the subject matter at hand, but as an online course I found his virtual lectures a bit dry, they are however vital to doing well in the class. I never had to use the textbooks in this class, lots of writing heavy assignments. He is fair when grading and willing to give out high marks for those who put in the work.
Mark is kind and passionate, but the class itself was quite boring. Lots of writing assignements, but Mark is a super fair grader and outlines exactly what he is looking for which makes getting a good mark much easier. If you can keep up with a large workload and put in the time on the writing assignments this a great class to get a good grade in.
Mark is a great person, and easily found during his office hours. However the first couple weeks were great then something changed and started a few lectures complaining of budget cuts saying himself and others could be retired or lose their jobs and telling us to go talk with the faculty. And it just got worse from there.
Mark is a meteorologist by heart and is a very knowledgeable professor in the field of geography. He is easy to talk to and is always available for help and takes a genuine interest in his students. He use to work for Environment Canada too.
Mark is a true geographer at heart, he knew the material through and through however, he yaps on the most useless topics. The littlest of concepts he barely talks about are on the midterm and final. I recommend going to every class otherwise you will gain no knowledge of PowerPoint and skip buying the textbooks.
Amazing prof!
Lectures were boring, assignments were easy at the start but it got harder, especially the 5 page analysis on a random state in the world. It's incredibly hard to do good on the midterm, the average was ~53-55 and only 4 people got something in the 80s and none got higher, I personally got 66% on it. Personally, would not recommend this professor.
Lectures are boring, he is a very old school professor, avoid him if you are someone who likes digital
loved his lectures, he is really passionate about the subject. My only issue would be the time limit we had to write tests, I knew the answers but didn't have enough time to write the essay questions.
He is a really good prof. he often gets off topic but not for very long. very slides based but does add information. a lot of writing is required for this class.
Mark is a super nice man and loves to talk to his students. The midterm and final were graded quite hard and I did well in the class because I went out of my way to figure out what he wanted. You won't do well in the class unless you really try.
Mark is a solid prof. His assignments are challenging but fair. Using ChatGPT and unstuckstudy for study prep really helped me ace the class.
Lectures were dry and uninspiring, but at times had a sprinkle of comedy. His passion for the subject is evident throughout the semester. He has been teaching for 30+ years and knows his stuff, even if he has trouble inspiring a strong attendance.
His classes may be a bit boring at times, but he is really passionate about the subject and is a very nice dude. the assignments were really fun if you like geography, mid term was hard, the class avergae war around 50%, but the final was easier. overall good class and easy to get a good grade if you do what he asks of you.
If you're passionate about geography and related fields, he's a good prof. If you're like me and this was an elective, NOOOOOOOO. I regret the day I registered for this course.
Makes a really hard paper. And difficult to score in midterm and finals
You can get good grades if you do your assignment well, pay attention in his class, and read the textbook. I highly recommend this course for earning credit and as an open elective.
