Don't take this class if you can get out of it. He's an arrogant jerk who doesn't care if you pass or not. In fact, he'd rather you didn't. His tests are ridiculously hard and you'll have more homework than all of your other classes combined.
this guy is a ****. hes not a teacher but a lecturer. this guy is the hardest teacher ive ever had. his tests are made to fail you because he likes to think hes better than everyone else. avoid this piece of crap if you can
Tough professor, but one that is willing to help if you are willing to work. He won't spoon feed you or sugar coat the material. You have to want it and be willing to work for it. Don't be swayed by slackers that demand it on a platter. Dr. Cracolice is one of the best.
This guy needs to be put under serious review. the exams are ridiculous and there is very little prep. for them in the text. the lab. is terrible and rarely seems to follow lecture. The active learning approach is the worst thing i have ever seen. workshop is a complete waste of time and peers teaching peers is a joke. Avoid this class at all costs
Like other people have said get out while you can. it is a 161 level class, I take 300-400 level class that are not this hard. I was not a slacker I worked my ass off and still got no where
Cracolice is an excellent professor. He is very hard and if you want to succeed, you need to work incredibly hard. He will keep people who do not want to work out of important professions. Would you want an engineer to build a bridge that isn't an excellent problem solver?
Terrible, conceited
A great professor! Anyone who says he isnt helpful either never went to his office to LOOK for help or they went without prethought-out questions. It's very hard but rewarding if you stick to it. I was getting C's and D's on the exams but on the standardized final I got a 97%!!! He'll beat you into submission and you either die or become stronger
worst teacher EVER. take this class if you like to fail all your tests even after spending 4 hours every day of the week on homework. the only thing worse than his typo riddled textbook, would be his lectures, or maybe the quizes, no wait... the TESTS FROM HELL WHERE NOBODY GETS AN A... seriously this dude will ruin your GPA
So, he is a hard teacher. I gotta admit; but no, he is not so difficult so as to fail everyone. It just requires a little more effort than most. I think, honestly, a main problem arises in that many who take the class are freshman and they are not used to the kind of involvement asked of them. Stay on top of it and you'll do well.
Good professor, requires a little dedication though. I got a B, but I went into the class almost cocky, after the first test you realize you actually gotta work in his class.
Professor Cracolice is an amazingly dedicated, hard working professor. He works hard to provide his students with plenty of practice opportunities and a chance to discuss the material with a knowlegable peer at least once a week. He has come up with a system for problem solving that,if used, makes this and many future classes much easier. Very Nice
This man thinks that its fine to require 30 hours a week for one class. Its a joke. Peer led team learning is a huge waste of time. I did fine in his class, but by the end I was just so sick of him, I stopped showing up about the last week. Thats how much I hated going to his class.
This is perhaps the worst example of education I've ever seen or heard of. I would never recommend taking his class. Unfortunately, students at UM often don't have any other option. I'm an A student with great study habits. He makes it impossible to learn and even harder to figure out what's going on in the class. He gets an F in every realm.
This is a class to separate the cookies from the crumbs. I very much enjoy chemistry but because of his bland persona and monotonous tone I quickly loose interest. I am perturbed by the idea that he wrote the textbook - I don't trust him. A well structured class and for some people this really works, just not for me.
At first I hated the class. I couldnt understand why I had to work so hard for a 100 level course. I literally cried during the first test. So then,I studied, I studied like crazy. Now that I am a graduate student I wish I had the opportunity to tell him than you. I am smarter and more hard working because of his class. So THANK YOU DR CRACOLICE!
This was a very difficult class. You had to work hard. His book was a perfect source for getting good grades on the tests, you people below me should try studying. This class is designed so idiots dont get good degrees
He is a shy genius who will make you know chemistry, if you want to try. I did not work harder in any other college class, but I am glad that someone is stopping lazy, self-important people from becoming doctors and engineers. P.S. Course numbers are not difficulty ratings. They separate foundation classes from integration classes.
He will make you work. If you're a slacker that wants a professor to hold your hand and wipe your little toosh while telling you what a big boy or girl you are, then this class isn't for you. If you're a student that expects to work and expects to be rewarded for that work, you won't be disappointed. Slackers hate this guy. Grown ups love him.
Very dificult class. A good percentage will have to take it twice. His exams are alos very dificult with very little prep.
Apathetic, comes off as uninterested in students.
Very difficult class, but also one of the best you can take. Comprehensive review of general chemistry that provides the necessary foundation required to succeed in a college-level science curriculum (i.e., chemistry majors, pre-pharmacy, pre-medical school).
He is a very poor professor. He charges $100 for a book that you cant even return and then fails half of his class. In this aspect alone, i find him a crook. He is easy to aproach, but then so would i if i was making large sums of money from my students. He is very arrogent. Also, his text has tons of errors. New revised txt book every semister.
Very poor lecturer. Even more difficult to aproach.
This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. The lectures are completely over your head and it's a "teach yourself by book at home" class. I studied upwards of 30-40 hours for tests and still failed. Took the class a second time and it wasn't any easier. Office hours are pointless, and he really doesn't care if you pass or fail.
Attending class is very important because there is a quiz every class. Most of the learning is done outside of class. Excellent textbook. Doing the homework is the only way you will be able to get a B or higher.
This is definitely a difficult class so be prepared for that. Lots of homework, daily quizzes and difficult tests. However, the text book is the best I've ever had. The way the textbook and the class are structured makes learning of very complex subjects much easier. If you can't handle this class, DON'T BECOME A SCIENCE MAJOR!
This is not supposed to be an easy class. This class was meant to make everyone squirm and make those not cut out for a science degree want to quit immediately. That being said, it is the best structured class I have ever taken! The textbook is great and it is very easy to learn in this class. Attaining a decent grade is much more difficult though.
Excellent course. Very difficult and much of the course is self-taught by doing the lessons in the book. The professor is very knowledgeable in the subject to the point that he is intimidating. You WILL be successful in the course if you do the readings and assignments. This course breeds excellent chemistry students.
It's true that this class sucks and it takes control over your life, but Cracolice is there to answer your questions and he's a decent teacher. I definitely wouldn't recommend this to anyone who doesn't want to apply themselves or to those that this class isn't in their major. Most days you'll want to drop, but if you stick with it, it's worth it.
Amazing professor. Probably the best engineered class I've ever taken. You have to live and breath chemistry to get an A but it's possible if you put in the work. He gives you everything you need to succeed you just have to do your part and work very, very...very hard.
This was by far, the most challenging course I have ever taken. It requires a lot of hard work. This class will challenge your intelligence and will make you feel hopeless at some point. BUT, it is not impossible, his office is always open for questions and if you are willing to fight for a good grade, you will succeed.
I am a hard working, good student going into science education. I found him narcissistic and unhelpful, his lectures useless and chaotic, peer review disorganized and unclear. I failed every quiz despite studying 30+ hours a week and often found myself in tears over the homework. Sadly, I have no choice but to take this class again from him.
Many students will be unwilling to deal with the work load and complain about it. Do the work, it is college you know. He provides so many useful tools to get questions answered and understand the information. Take advantage of those.
This class will kick your butt - however the professor is actually very approachable and friendly and is willing to work with you to solve whatever problems you might be facing - there is a lot of support for this class, it just takes a lot of effort on your part to go out and take advantage of the opportunities.
Dr. Cracolice has created an ingenious system to create excellent chemistry students. The lecture is structured down to the second and the book is surprisingly easy to read with helpful practice problems inserted throughout the reading. This class will take up most of your time for the semester that you take it so plan your schedule wisely.
The homework focus of class makes it easy to learn. The book, written by the professor, is riddled with typos and missing information.
Tough class, and it is important to make sure you have a good workshop leader.
Simply put, you'll learn so much about General Chemistry in this course. While it is sink or swim, it is an entirely homework-based course so your own effort will determine your grade. Dr Cracolice is exceptionally bright and while his course is challenging, you will enjoy it immensely if you are willing to put in the requisite effort.
Very difficult class, but you will learn so much from it in a short period of time. Cracolice can be very hard to approach and may not seem friendly, but he really is there to help you learn so go talk to him when you run into problems.
Avoid CHMY 141 with him at all costs. I took this class and dropped it within the first month. Take it in the spring with a different professor instead.
At the end of the year you know your stuff... or you've become a business major.
It is a difficult class, but by the end, your general chemistry skills will be solid and your problem solving skills will be greatly improved. I thought this was a great class, and Dr. Cracolice is a great teacher. His tests are hard, but the class is definitely worth it.
Even though the class is difficult and test grading is frustrating, you get out what you put in. I love the structure and Dr. Cracolice is a really nice guy. He wants you to help yourself but I've found him approachable as long as you're clear about what you need and respectful. It's a big commitment but very rewarding. You'll learn so much.
My perfect (100%) ACS scores both semesters are a direct reflection of Mark's teaching ability. Do exactly what he says to do and you will succeed. Slack, whine, and make excuses and you will fail. The best college course I have ever taken (160+ credits so far). I switched my major to chemistry after this course. Hats off to you, Dr. Cracolice.
This class is definitely tough and very time consuming. Exams are difficult; however, you will leave this class with so much more knowledge. Cracolice has this class structured excellently and has a very effective method to ensure you know the material, if you put the time in. Well worth it! He was a great professor!
This class is way too hard for a one hundred level class. Only a few peer leaders are actually helpful. In general I'm unhappy with UMs chemistry program, which doesn't offer enough support for undergrads. Basically this class is sink or swim. On the plus side you will be extremely prepared for the ACS test.
my last chem class i aced and it was taught by doctors that didn't have teaching experience. this class i'm barely keeping up with. confusing lectures, no help on questions from him and super strict grading make me frustrated. if all you(Cracolice) care about is torturing people don't teach. ever.
Take your general college chemistry courses elsewhere - even if you plan to attend UM! This course is extremely difficult. Its focus is on memorizing homework, though Cracolice will say he wants you to understand concepts. A disproportionate amount of students do poorly in the class. UM desperately needs to bring a new professor in for this course.
I would not recommend Cracolice's class to anyone. I came into this class having done very well in all chemistry classes prior, but no matter what I did in his class I could never get a good grade. He does not really teach and he grades extremely harsh and he has an ego that won't quit. Save yourself and don't take his class.
This class is difficult. It needs to be your priority if you want to keep your head above water. It's very easy to fall behind. If you go to class,do the homework, pay attention, and use your workshop leader for help, you will be fine. It's the weed out course for the sciences,so it's there to get rid of all the slackers who aren't willing to work for it.
He has a very hard way of teaching and expects you to know more than he teaches. It always makes it confusing for when the tests come and I don't know any of the material. He doesn't much teach, he just reads off the slides and makes it very boring.
This class will make even the most passionate, hard-working, intelligent students hate chemistry with a vengeance. Cracolice is by far the worst university professor I have ever had the misfortune of learning from, if you want to call it learning. Avoid this class like the plague, I started out with Chem and Math majors and now I'm just in Math.
So for some clarity, I am a former student but I will say this; this class is incredibly hard but it single-handledly prepared me for all calculation-based problems in pharmacy school. I was not a good student in this class, I definitely failed more exams than I passed, but I think it is designed to be punishing do it isn't taken for granted.
Cracolice's class is hard but very rewarding. He puts a lot of effort into this class and gives many resources to make sure we can do well, although he expects a lot of work from his students. People say it's too hard and it's not fair, but those people aren't the ones that are working hard. His textbook is great.
Dr. Cracolice does not teach this class in a logical manner. He starts off the semester with stoichiometry then two months later you learn about what atoms and electrons actually are. Treat this class like a full time job. There are quizzes everyday so do not skip. If you're scared, don't worry, he'll tell you how to drop his class the first week.
This class is not a joke, so do not treat it like one. I graduated high school valedictorian, always got good grades, had excellent study habits, and none of that prepared me for this class. This was the first time I've actually gotten an F on an exam. There is a disconnect in learning the material and I haven't figured out what it is yet. Awful.
One of the toughest, most rewarding classes I have taken thus far. Mark Cracolice is a good teacher and the class is structured in a very organized manner. The kicker is that there is a lot of homework that needs to be done every night and tests are not easy. This class is a huge commitment, but if you put the work into it you will be rewarded.
Dr. Cracolice is a very tough professor but a good one overall. He prepares students for the real world and although is very critical, students will develop an efficient way of studying. I'm glad I took this class, it taught me that you've got to really work for your grade. I recommend students to take this course with Dr. Cracolice!
Book is a joke that keeps on giving. More mistake and missing chapters then I have ever seen. Chem does not need to be difficult it just needs to be explained with clarity and consistency!!!! This class does not do either. Take the class at another university if possible and definitely with a different book. possibly the worst class at the U of M.
He is very demanding of his students time, expects chemistry to first priority over any subject. He seems to pride his ego off his failure rate for the courses he teaches. On the positive note, he over prepares students for the standardized ACS final. This class overall has basic concepts with too much busy work that turns you off.
I went up to him for help several times, and he could not help me. He is too smart to teach this class. If you don't get the nomenclature down (lessons 8-9) drop the class!!!
Very hard class if you don't commit to it. Do your homework and go to all section meetings and it will help a lot with the tests. Flash cards are beyond helpful, if you don't show your work, say goodbye to those points on the test.
Dr. Cracolice has one of the most organized class on campus. Unfortunately, he may be one of the worst professors you may encounter here. The quizzes and exams are inconsistently graded. Expect to be graded based on how well you can regurgitate equations, not on your knowledge base. For a man that expects no errors, his book is loaded with em'.
Fast talker and lecturer.
He gets a bad rap because he knows how important gen chem is to almost every science class and so he forces students to practice it and become good at it. People in his class don't realize it, but I doubt there is a professor on campus that cares more about his students actually learning and wants them to pass.
He makes you work consistently throughout the semester, and I think he is pretty helpful if you take advantage of the class.
It is an extremely hard class and very demanding! Get ready to have a rigorous schedule with hard exams. I will say this, I am in the school of pharmacy and while his class is hard, it prepares you immensely for the pharmacy school. We have used over half the concepts he's taught. Sit down and learn the stuff. It will pay off.
I loved this class, but it is one of the hardest classes you will take. However it will prepare you VERY well for any future chemistry classes you have to take. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't feel like working for a grade. If you work to understand the concepts you'll do fine. Don't complain, suck it up, and get ready to ready to really learn
Be ready to work. Tough class but you will walk about knowing your genchem. I was prepared well for the PCAT.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. The prof expects you to put in 40 hours of work a week on top of your other classes. If you have a job, or a learning disability/mental illness, you can kiss your chances of getting an A goodbye, unless you're willing to have a mental breakdown. Professional scientists have said this class makes no sense.
Incredibly hard class. Make sure to take 141 with him before taking 143.
Horribly designed class, incredibly hard and way too demanding for a. a 100 level class and b. ONE class when I had four others to be working on as well. Make sure you take 141 with him to learn his teaching style before you take 143 with him. Super hard and way too much work.
Amazing teacher. If you are willing to work really hard then you will respect this guy. He pushes you to be fluent in this important material and I grew very confident in my ability to do chemistry and solve problems. He gets a bad rep for being tough on students, but really he just wants to push you to be better.
I can understand why this class may be useful for students who will continue to take Chemistry, but I am only taking it to fill a credit requirement for Computer Science. While the class only teaches basic concepts, it does so in an incredibly unforgiving and unintuitive manner. Requires an unreasonable amount of time and memorization.
Doesnt really care about students or their struggles to understand material.
Extremely difficult with unreasonable work loads. Concepts are relatively easy, but problems are extremely complex. Basically educational overkill. I would say if you dont need this class, dont take it. Also, his body posture while lecturing is distracting because it is so bad
The course sets unrealistic expectations early on. This class will tank your gpa. If you are considering pre-med, pre-vet or any other pre-profession that requires this course, I suggest going to Bozeman instead.
This class is extremely difficult with a professor that doesn't care about his students. He doesn't teach what he tests on and grades with little to no partial credit. I put in 30hrs a week of how and study and never got more than a D on a test. He teaches as though he wants all of his student to fail. Whatever you do not take this class form him.
If you need this class go to Montana State in Bozeman. Dr. Cracolice's ego gets in the way of student success. There are 38 quizzes throughout the semester. Each quiz and test is inconsistently graded. He gives the option for regrading, however without looking he's told me not submit several of my quizzes because I shouldn't make his T.A. mad.
This class gets a bad rep because of its difficulty. Don't get me wrong, this class is a weeder class so it's very hard. You definitely have to put in the work in order to do well. Cracolice can seem cold and but the bottom line is, he wants students to really grasp the material in order to succeed in their future. You will get out what you put in.
Chemistry has taken over my life and not in a good way... Dont take this class if you have a social life, job, other classes, pets, etc. Almost impossible to pass and he doesnt care. You can put up to 30-40 hours a week into this class and still fail exams. Waste of time. Take somewhere else from someone else if you can.
He only wants serious STEM students enrolled, which is fair. Extremely challenging class. Had to quit my job just to have enough time to spare for this and my other classes. 38 quizes throughout the semester, graded very very harshly. Make sure to have up to 20 hrs/week to study for this class (whether for quizzes/exams) and you should be good.
It's a lot. You have to be prepared for the sheer amount of work and studying for this class. Definitely the hardest class I've ever taken. However... If you can make it through to the end you learn SO much. The class is generally geared toward premed, and trust me you will be ready for any graduate school tests after this. Horrible? yes Worth? yes
This class is extremely difficult for a 100 level class. If you are able, take 141 and 143 with Dr. Sugden instead. The classes are essentially the same, but Dr. Sugden is much more approachable. If you can stick with the class, it is worthwhile... but it is a lot.
IN CHEM 141/143 you have to be prepared to spend a ton of time on homework. There are quizzes every class and they must be perfect in order to even get a B on them. The exams for the class are even more difficult. In my semester, it was rare for anyone to even receive a B on it. If you are going to take the class, just be prepared.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. I was a straight A student in high school and had a 3.8 GPA. I have never once ever been on the verge of failing a class. I FAILED both exams after studying 15+ hours after studying for both exams. The professor goes extremely fast through the lectures and never once stops to ask if theres any questions.
QUIT YOUR JOB, BREAK UP WITH YOUR S.O. AND HIRE A THERAPIST BEFORE TAKING THIS CLASS! I am an all A student applying to medical school, and this class made me question every aspect of myself especially my intellect. Dr. Cracolice gives no care to student success, but rather his own based on how many students drop his class each term. BEWARE
Could not get above an F without taking it with Professor Sugden. The 1% who don't have a job and who can afford a tutor are the kids who pass. THIS SHOULD NOT BE A 100 LEVEL CLASS. Guess I should kiss my full year of job shadowing goodbye? No feedback is taken into account. Syllabus "I don't care if you are a single parent, this class is priority"
He grades super tough and picks questions for the test you will never see in any other chemistry class. If you can survive until the end, you'll at least be prepared for the standardized test at the end of the year. Any other class is easy in comparisson.
Very difficult but absolutely worth it if you want to go into chemistry or other hard science. You have no choice but to leave this class with a very good understanding of gen chem and every class after seems easy in comparison. Only for the toughest people.
Forces you to buy the textbook he wrote. If you have to retake the class, you have to repurchase the book. Lies and says he doesn't make any money from the book. Sure dude, sure.
I hate to say it, but Crac's class is the one in which I learn the most. I hate the guy and I think he's a registered sociopath, but he does know his stuff and he knows how to teach it. The amount of homework is insane and the tests/quizzes are very difficult. If you don't get the wording perfect, you're completely wrong and get no points at all.
Prepare for this class to kill your soul. Cracolice prides himself on his fail rate and to top it off is a poor lecturer. I feel so sorry for anyone who has to take this class. I can't wait to be finished. Good luck.
When I was reading about crac this summer, I was super scared, and if you're feeling that way, calm down a little bit- you just have to do it. Be prepared for up to 15-20 hours of homework a week if you want to be successful. It is possible to succeed, but I don't credit much of that to the professor. I taught myself all of the concepts I know.
At the beginning of this class, prof said we would be doing an hour and a half of homework every night and this is definitely true. However, if you do the homework and use the resources available, you will learn chemistry very well. Also, the grades are sort of curved at the end and so your final grade is almost always higher than your raw score.
By far the hardest class I have ever taken. Quizzes every single class, no partial credit, and NO exceptions for late work. I literally had a car fall off of its jack and on to me, resulting in a trip to the ER and this man still refused to allow me to retake a quiz. Faint of heart beware. Granted, if you manage to pass, you'll understand chemistry
Lectures are poor. Grading is harsh, seems like the wordy questions are not based on basic understanding, has to be word for word.
This class was so hard. Don't take it unless you absolutely have to. 0/10.
You will either learn chemistry or fail. He sets up the class to be hard to do well on ACS, but that included daily quizzes. I was in the hospital during the semester and couldn't be excused from those daily quizzes because 8 were dropped. Pretty brutal.
By far the worst professor at University of Montana. This class will make you want to pull your hair out. He only wants a high ACS grade. He weeds out kids with avg grades (b and c) to only have the top performing people for the test. This is not a 100 level class when he teaches it. He has an inability to lecture and show basic human compassion.
Genuinely a class that wants you to fail and he doesn't care. He literally only cares about the ACS because it's a national test and claims that his teaching method helps us understand and pass and the final will supposedly help but when the class average for tests in no higher than 55% still claims his method works with no care for the students.
A sad depressing man whose whole life boils down to how a handful of kids score on an ACS test. Never once saw him smile. Randomly focuses WAY too much on equilibrium tables. An 850 in his class is a B, other professor in Fall & Summer curves to an A for that score. Good thing I scraped by with a 904. Unrespected by faculty and staff.
The only way to pass this class with THIS professor is to either be incredibly gifted or exhibit poor mental health practices throughout the entirety of the semester. This class consumed my soul to the point where I lost all passion for academics and the sole thing that kept me going is refusal to allow this out of touch man ruin my future
The class is structured well, and grading methods are set out from the beginning. There are lots of outside resources to support you, and his lectures and homework set you up very well for exams. Homework is time-consuming, but not overly hard, and quizzes reflect the homework. I have lots of respect for Cracolice and the way he runs his course.
