Incredibly clear, concise, and helpful instructor. He was born to teach, I've rarely met teacher like him, he is great all around. He is fair on his exams, quizes, report-marking. I just wish there were more teachers like him. Keep up the good work Mark. Highly recommended instructor. Cheers,
Awesome instructor... Prepares you well for quizzes and midterms. During lectures highlights important things to remember that might be used in tests. Friendly and helpful.

Textbook is useless. Boring course
Great teacher, very down to earth. Teaches the exact material needed and tests on it respectively. Textbook not needed which is extremely liberating for a student on a budget.
Mark is a great teacher! Put emphasis on what exactly is on the midterms therefore studying is straight forward. Explains really well! Love his class!
Amazing teacher- would take class again. Concise and to the point- very well rounded teacher!
Very good teacher, you will love him.
Excellent teacher. Concise and clear. Wants you to learn and goes the extra mile to get you there. Cares about the students. Take his class if you can!
One of the best profs I've ever had.
Hands down, best teacher I've ever had. Entertaining class, really cares about his students and is very fair. Obviously loves what he does and is very helpful. <3
awesomeness.
Great prof, tries to make material interesting..lots of knowledge on immunology. Took 1120 and 1220 with him. He is awesome!
best biology teacher ever !!!
Definitely one of the best instructors ive ever had! He is not an easy instuctor, and biology is not an easy subject. However, he makes it interesting and is always available for extra help. He makes a wonderful instructor and he has a passion for teaching, which is expressed on a daily basis.
amazing and helpful teacher. keeps the class environment light and fun. very intelligent as well.
Great instructor, very easy going and helpful. tests arn't easy, make sure you study his hand-out. He wants you to do well and is willing to help you out. Def. taking him for 1220. Super smart too!
He is an awesome instructor! Love him! He is smart and funny. He definitely wants you to succeed in his class. Wish there are a lot of teachers out there who has the passion to teach.
Amazingly great!
I took his class after hearing much praises about his teaching style. But I do not understand the hype. He says he wants to give you marks. In fact, he makes you feel stupid for following TB or labmanual definitions & takes away chunk of points if you do not write exact key words he goes by (even when he knows u understand the material) on the exam
Mark is really helpful and can tell that he's passionate about what he teaches. His exams are not easy, but he will prepare you and you just gotta study hard like you're supposed to as a post secondary student. Classes are fun and interesting. He's one of the best profs!
Mark is a very passionate instructor who values student time and will give the most concise lectures possible on the subjects. He posted all of the notes and lecture slides online which was amazing, no need to take endless hurried notes, a real lifesaver. Always open to questions and a great sense of humor, lectures were never dry.
Great teacher. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone! He is definately there to inspire you and make sure you understand the material. If you don't get it, he will help you until you do. His humour kept our class going, but most of all the students probably kept him laughing to. I would definately take his class, it's a mistake if you don't
Mark, is one of most amazing instructors there is out there. He interacts with the students with great respect and kindness. He teaches from his heart and he comes in 2 hours early before the class to explain the material one to one. Honestly, he is one of the best instructors out there and other A&P instructors don't even compare.
Would not recommend this teacher.
Mark is the best teacher I've ever had. He is very specific about what you need to know for the exams and gives you practically 10% in extra credit if you do 2 presentations. He's funny and makes the class interesting. The people that do poorly in his class either do not like biology, or don't listen to what he tells you.
Listen in class, go to the review classes, ask lots and lots of questions - he will basically give you the answers to the tests, you just need to ask.
He needs to understand that this is a FIRST year anatomy and physiology and to take it easy on the marking scheme of things. Guy is a super hard marker expectations are as if you are in your masters program. Take it easy Mark!
Key points - HARD marker. Will dock marks for anything minor. No sympathy for anyone. He's overworked - goes from one teaching job to another. When you ask questions he will brush you off. Quizzes once a month. Slight review before exams. Would recommend another prof as it is tough to get a good mark due to his tough marking. Unsure of all the hype
Make sure you go to all Mark's lectures. In class, he places emphasis on materials that are more important. He is a very tough marker (especially for a 1st year course) but if you study, try hard, and ask questions, you will do well.
Do not take this particular course with him. Good luck getting through incredibly difficult midterms and trying to get a good grade. He doesn't care what you get .. what you get is what you get. Have spoken to higher people in Biology department in regards to how he operates his classes. Would not recommend by any means.
Overrated!! Overworked & very moody. Makes students feel bad for asking questions. Brushes you off when further explanation needed. Docks marks on exams for unexplained reasons even if the answer is correct. Tough exams, brief and unhelpful reviews, lectures are quick & confusing. Does not care about student learning & success. Needs to relax!
Don't recommend this instructor at all. Is not helpful, is very mean at times and does not care about your overall education and goals. Is annoyed when asked questions or for help. High expectations almost equivalent to trying to obtain a Masters in Bio. Exams are extremely difficult and impossible to achieve great grades on them. Don't risk it
I got solid B- in Gr12 Bio so expected to do real good in AP. I was in for a big surprise with this master level course. Super moody.
For nursing, theres way too much emphasis on human physiology. I dont know why the course is so hard. I have to balance overtime shifts and kids and still have some time left over to party ;)
Totally favours people who study and understand and put in effort. Its so unfair.
hard exams, we aren't studying to be PhD's mark! Good thing is you get off class early every time. Bad thing is, well he will rush every lecture to get home and expect you to know every single detail. Perhaps he was a good teach before, but he is definitely not a good teacher anymore. Avoid if possible.
When I went away for a two week yoga retreat he wouldn't allow me to write a make up exam. Absolutely no sympathy at all! Do not take this highly over-rated instructor!
Sure maybe he give the questions in advance and reviews answers before but when it comes to the exam how does he expect you to know all this complicated phd stuff? When I went away for a two week yoga retreat he wouldn't allow me to write a make up exam. Absolutely no sympathy at all! Do not take this highly over-rated instructor!
I had to take this course as a pre req. By far the WORST bio prof ever. Super particular and anal about every little thing. Nobody cares what the difference is between a covalent and a polar bond. Give us a darn C+ and ride your bike. Do not take he is inconsiderate and there to collect a salary. Not helpful and not sympathetic.
My favourite teacher. Really cares about his students and teaches them what really matters and is important. I went into BIOL 1100 without BIO 11 or BIO 12 pre reqs and was able to A+ the first level uni course taught by him. He teaches the course content well and all you need to do to succeed in this course is apply yourself & take time to study.
Tough exams, but he is there to help! Replies to emails quickly and includes details in where to improve on. You need to put in the time to study, but what bio course don't you? I wish he was going to teach my other classes I needed.
Tough marker, total push over for anyone willing to whine for a better mark.
He's a tough grader and very particular but he basically gives you all the answers to the exams. You just need to ask LOTS of questions. Go to the reviews, and ask him anything and everything. He will emphasize on exam questions without you realizing. He gives 3x 10 mark questions per exam to choose from.. Learn them all and you'll do excellent
I see a lot of negative comments here, but I found Mark pretty amazing. He definitely is a hard marker, and very anal about details, but biology is a generally study-heavy subject, so if you are prepared to work hard, then you'll be just fine. Be sure not to bluff your answers, cause he deducts marks for wrong answers, even if the rest is right lol
Do not take biology 1120 with Mark. He cuts class short and will end it 1.5 hours in.. when the duration should be 4 hours. Then he expects you to know all this complicated stuff for the exams. He does not care about his students and will not change your mark even if you have a valid point. Super tough marker anal about everything.
Very good instructor! Fair, down to Earth, easy going, cristal clear teaching style and I can go on and on. Once in a while there comes the student who failed to blame it all on the instructor. Mark gives: his undivided attention when you have questions or need help, one on one explanations, marks if you prove you have a valid point! This is Mark!
Mark has a straight forward grading criteria. The tests are multiple choice and a lot of short answers. There are also extra credit to boost your grade! But, mark can be picky about word choice on short answer questions. He also takes attendance. Overall a good instructor.
I personally liked Mark. It is rare to see an instructor who wants to share knowledge the way he does it and who believes in the importance of exploring your potential. I found him inspiring. Very entertaining and has a great sense of humour. He explains the content well. He is there for you when you need it. I would choose him all over again!
I would like him to teach each and every course I need to take to complete my education. He's extraordinary!
I one word: amazing! Everyone loves him... So did I!
One of the best instructors I have ever had.... and I have been to three different universities/colleges. He really tries to keep the lectures interesting and interactive. His lectures are organized and contains the most important "must knows" about the units. He is very approachable and caring. Thanks Mark!
Awesome teacher! Understands the student. Very fair marker. Respectful. Approachable. Helpful. Smart. Other Bio profs dont compare to him. He is the best! Dont hesitate to take him.
Best bio prof ever! No hw . He tells you exactly what is in the exam and makes notes for you so you don't even need to buy the textbook. He is quite a funny instructor so class was always enjoyable. He is a fair marker and even gives you the long answer questions (in advance) for every exam. Took him for part 1 & 2
I took Mark's class for both 1100 and 1227, with no interest in Anatomy whatsoever. He was the most caring, funny, attentive teacher I have had in awhile. He has a gift. Only bases marks off of midterms and lab exams. Don't bother buying a text or coloring book - he has a website you can print lecture slides from.
Mark is an amazing teacher! Whether you like Biology/Anatomy or not is irrelevant; most students love his teaching style, helpfulness, kindness, dedication, not to mention his amazing looks. Only students who dont put any effort will dislike Mark, because he is a tough, but fair marker and wont give marks if the answer is made up. Go to class!
He provides lecture notes which are too comprehensive for this level of A&P, but he goes over the notes before exams and will tell students exactly what to focus on! This is a heavy course and he will deduct marks unless the answer is absolutely right. He has no sympathy for the student who slacks, disrupts the class or begs for passing. Hes fair!
His lectures are so short, and he rushes through the material so fast. He teaches the bare minimum and expects you to know everything. He is always late for lectures and exam days. The worst is, he never replies to emails, even if you're reaching out to see him or ask for help, he won't reply. Good luck!
This instructor is incredible!
The best for A&P at VCC! The others are not even close to how good Mark is, so take him without hesitation. Take the course seriously or dont bother taking it at all.
Mark is a phenomenal teacher. His lectures are very concise and clear and he always points out information that will be on midterms. He definitely knows his material when it comes to anatomy and is always willing to clarify difficult concepts. Very fair marker and super approachable. Put in the effort and you'll do very well in his class! :)
Amazing professor. I highly recommend him. Mark tells you what to study for based on his lecture notes and powerpoint slides. Textbook isnt required. 3 exams. No homework. Lab report isnt mandatory, but it is there for an extra boost. If hard work is put into studying, an easy high grade for sure. Thank you Mark for an amazing semester!
Loved Mark! Great instructor.
Mark is one of the best instructors I've had at VCC. He is very passionate at what he does and wants what is best for his students. He often give hints as to what is going to be on the exams which help a substantial amount. Give your time and effort and the overall result from it will leave you happy at the end of the course :) Good luck!
Mark was one of the best teachers Ive ever had. He is super caring and will go out of his way to help you understand the material. His notes are straight to the point and exams are covered under the material he teaches. Highly recommended him. If you do your part, you will get the grade you worked for.
This teacher was SO BORING and worst teacher ever! He literally just reads off of power point and finishes in like an hour when the class is supposed to be 4 hours. He makes his own tests which even the questions are difficult to understand the way he phrases them. He relies on his tests only and nothing for extra credit to boost your mark.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Half of people from my class failed. Exam questions come from no where. No practice questions. Study guide is vague, means you need to memorize every single words from the power point (over 60pages a chapter, times 4or5 chapters). Short answer questions are extremely difficult. 4 hrs class ends in 30-45mins. Good luck.
Here's to my fellow students who are thinking of taking his class for A&P -- DON'T. Unless you want to fail. I did look him up here before registering for his class but I did not believe what the majority was being said. 100% REGRET. 50% of people in my class failed!! GOOD LUCK!! Exams are way too hard, expects to know word by word from his notes.
By far one of the worst classes I have taken. Mark does not care about his students, and is not willing to help you. He has so many lecture slides, and just reads off the powerpoint. I have reached out countless times, and never get a response. I do not recommend his class unless you wanna fail.
His notes contain a lot of information. He explains the material well. Expectations are high! Tests are moderately difficult. Goes through the material fast. Classes are not four hours long. He is hard to reach. Not the greatest instructor, but he is okay.
Mark is a good instructor. Just attend his class, and be ready to memorize lots during this class. Tests are straight forward. Do the work and you will pass
I like that he posts all the study materials online. 3 tests are based entirely on the study guides. Notes are extremely detailed; he'll let you know what to study for. If you are only taking 1-2 courses, and good at self-teach, take his class. Yes, you'll need to memorize lots but pls, it's an AP class. PUT IN THE TIME NEEDED! Good luck to all.
Lots of material; he should cut back on it! Nobody will remember half of this in a years time. He has a website where he posts all the information, which is very helpful. You pretty much have to be ready for self-teaching. Hes okay, but could do better. Some classmates liked him, some didnt. It was about 50/50. It depends on your expectations.
Do not take his class!!!! Mark does not care about his students. If you dont believe it, take his class and see it for yourself Thats what I did! Big mistake.
Mark is an interesting instructor. He can be rigid in certain ways. I have mixed feelings about how he teaches. I made it work for myself, but generally felt there was too much material. I did not find him particularly helpful.
Mark gives great study guides but he puts the test outside of the study guide. Be prepared to study PowerPoints and chapter notes. Be prepared to struggle in his class. His midterms are very very hard and class average is so low.
To get an A or A+ in this course: 1. make your own summary notes based on his notes and PPT 2. make a flashcard for EACH QS on his study guide 3. before the exam, make a concise version of your summary notes with titles, subtitles, and keywords only. If you do all of the above, your grades WILL reflect your effort. Proven.
Mark has been one of the best biology teachers I have taken! I have had him for both Bio 1120 and 1220 and he makes learning the material and understanding it very easy. He has amazing lectures, practice exams and notes so there's no way you could be unprepared. He also very flexible and caring. Defs one of the best teachers i have had.
Mark is a pretty good prof. His classes aren't super fun or inspirational, but they're not bad either. His lectures are short, especially considering how much content there is, but it's easy to learn on your own through his notes. I think he's pretty lax and easy-going compared to other bio profs. Put in the effort and you'll get a good grade.
AWFUL! DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Be careful of him.
He may appear to be a chill and funny guy, but his grading is atrocious. Unclear marking schemes, doesn't provide detailed explanations for his evaluations. He is good at simplifying hard concepts but beware of his grading tactics.
This instructor is unreasonable and inflexible. Very annoying!
To current and future students: really bad idea to sleep with any professor and even worse idea to sleep with this one. You deserve better than to be used for sex by an old man. He's not worth it. Stay away from him for your own good.
If you want an A in this course, the easiest way is to sleep with this prof. If getting a good mark trumps sleeping with an old, salacious man for you, then go for it. Be ready to get creative! Expect disappointment. Good luck...
Many negative reviews have been removed, so unsure how long this comment will stay up, however I feel compelled to warn other women who are emotionally vulnerable against taking this class. If this isn't you, great! You won't have to buy a textbook, so there's that.
Explains very well and straightforward
Give poor grades and no explanation.
Gives good grades if you perform well.
Great teacher. Very approachable. Goes the extra mile to show how caring and supportive he is. If you have questions and need help, he's accessible outside class and very eager to help you.
Very approachable and accessible outside of class, if you are willing to do what it takes. He will give you a good grade.
THIS TEACHER IS AWFUL Tests are hard.
Awful professor . The grading is terrible and it is unclear how it will be corrected. There are no standard questions at all and they are very difficult.
This teacher is unprofessional and should not be teaching. His tests are hard and the grading is awful.
One the best profs I've ever had. I studied twice a week for 3 hours with no previous experience in biology. I got A I. 1120 and A+ in 1220. I highly recommend Mark. He is one of the rarest profs who actually loves teaching and cares about his students. It is not an easy course, but Mark makes it doable. it's an easy pass.
Mark is a good professor. I did enjoy his classes. His exams are also pretty straightforward if you study from the learning objectives. The only con is that he can be a bit sloppy with the marking. It is the end of the semester, and we have only received our grades for the first midterm and lab exam....
hard marking, low grades
Great professor, clear and enthusiastic, but grading is very strict. Answers can be marked wrong for word count, missing examples, too many examples or even pen colour. Before a test, check if he requires a word count. If not, exceeding the limit may cost you the complete test .Good class, easy exams but be prepared for tough marking.
He lays it all out clearly - if you watch his lectures and use his study guides and notes you will do well
