Mark is awesome! He reminded me of my community college professors in the best way. Really passionate about teaching. He found ways to make things fun and to help us remember. He allows you to re-do labs if you score really low. He is giving us 2 extra credit opportunities. He is super accessible. There is really no reason not to do well! Take him!
2 Midterms and 1 Final. Easily one of my favorite professors. He makes his exams very straightforward and all the info is on the power points. EC quizzes every friday and other EC opportunities. He really knows his stuff!
Mark is awesome!! He really wants students to do well in his class. His exams are super straightforward and straight from his lecture PowerPoints (which he posts online) and if you dont do well on his exams he offers 2 extra credit opportunities, and also has weekly extra credit quizzes. He also wears Hawaiian shirts every Friday!! So cute.
A really caring, humorous and knowledgeable professor. Straightforward and organized lessons and expectations for students. Grade consisted of 2 exams, a final, and many opportunities for extra credit. I can now say that I can read a dinosaur phylogenetic tree due to Prof Deblois' instruction. I highly recommend him
Professor Mark was such a fun and exciting professor. He explains thing simply and his tests are taken out of the lecture slides. He an exciting instructor who is very passionate about what he does. Take him if you can ! He also gives weekly extra credit quizzes that really help your midterm grades if you need it.
Clear and interesting lecture, the exams are very straitforward.
Awesome teacher, nice persona, great structure for the class, open note exams with plenty of time. So enjoyable, stressfree and easy to be successful in this coure. HIGHLY reccomend. also LOTS of extra credit.
Interesting content n lectures with many EC opportunities. Mark is also a such a sweet professor!!
There is an "Aloha Quiz" every week which consists of 4 questions and a chance to receive an get a full point of extra credit (nothing hurts you). I had him FQ 2020 and his lectures were live and not recorded. The midterms/final were short and pretty easy! He is such a good teacher, happy to review concepts, and very caring of his students.
I ended up with over 100% in the class. It is PAINFULLY easy with an insane amount of extra credit. However, I learned barely anything and despite the lecture topics being very interesting, the professor is actually really boring (nice guy though) and I had a lot of trouble focusing. Take for the easiest A ever but not if you really care to learn.
Loved it! Super interesting content and an easy A. Definitely cares for his students. Lots of opportunities to get extra credit and low-stress exams. One downside is that lectures aren't recorded, but if you're able to show up you're golden. Great class to take if you're low on units.
He is a chill dude who is passionate about Geology. Great class to satisfy gen ed requirements. Pay attention in lectures and you can pass with an A
Easy class and a good prof, I recommend.
The class was overall easy! He gives extra credit quizzes that HELLPs your grade! The exams are on the easier side.
I loved this professor. His lectures are interesting and it's easy to learn in this class. The class was structures around two midterms and a final. I found it easy to learn in this class. This professor is sweet and this class is not intended to drain you. Great for someone interested in Geology and earthquakes. Would recommend this class:)
Mark is a very caring and passionate teacher. This class is fairly easy, it's all based on two midterms and one final. I recommended attending lectures because he doesn't record them. He also has an extra credit quiz every week so this class is an easy A. I've never been a big Earth science person, but Mark made this class very interesting & fun.
Prof. DeBlois is awesome! I would definitely take the class again because of how digestible the material was. Aloha Quizzes will be your best friend because it's practically the easiest extra credit you'll get at Davis. The quizzes are mini-reviews of the week's lecture and they really do boost up your grade.
Professor Deblois is very passionate about geology and makes learning about it not boring! His lectures are interesting and it is easy to do well as long as you go over his lecture slides before exams. He also offers Aloha Quizzes every weekend for extra credit :) The only negative thing are his discussion assignments which are a bit confusing.
He gives a lot of extra credit on top of making the midterms very easy to do well on. He has great energy and is just generally a very kind prof.
I honestly loved this class, specifically because it was taught by a very kind professor (wish more professors were like Dr. Deblois). His class is really easy and you will get an A as long as you attend the lectures, lots of extra credit as well. The only thing was that the discussion assignments were a little confusing but overall great class:)
Honestly this prof is great. I only have an issue that he refuses to record lectures but if you cant make lectures just study the slides and youll be fine. Lots of extra credit and boosts your grade by a lot. Easy A in my opinion
Interesting dude who makes fun lectures. Grading is based on tests. Materials are easy and few outclass efford is nessary for good grade. Go to lecture and go over materials before exams. There are things to remember but have you taken BIS series? Much less than that so you will be fine. Great class for GE and hopefully you will enjoy. Signing out
His course is very clear at all points and all of the contents of his lectures are exactly what you want to remember on the tests. He has 2 midterms, a final, and some weekly discussion papers. Extra credit is also given as a little quiz weekly, so make sure to do them to help your midterm grades. Overall, it's a nice and interesting course.
The class is entirely based on exams, but they're easy and straightforward! Just come to his live lectures and study his slides and you're set! Take him for an easy A! W professor.
Grade based on 2 midterms, final and lab activities. You also get to take a quiz every week to earn EC. Go to lab and you'll get an A. Online exams and final, complete study questions from lecture slides and you'll get an A on them. Enjoyed just listening to prof, he's a very passionate sweetheart and cares about all his students. Easy 4 unit GE.
Good professor. He is funny and great, the course is really easy A.
Your grade on this class will be based on your performance on the two midterms and final. All questions are based on lectures and there is no textbook needed. The lectures are interesting and it was my favorite class this quarter.
dr. deblois is the best. hes super sweet and is great to talk to!! the class (earthquakes & hazards) was really easy and very fun
This class is easy, but you will still learn a bunch of stuff. For example, I now know what ferromagnesian and felsic mean. there are many extra credit opportunities including weekly quizzes which will add points to your midterm grades. He answers every question you ask. overall, he's pretty good.
Professor Deblois is an amazing lecturer and uses analogies to explain difficult concepts. Tests are pretty easy if you pay attention in class, but depending on who your TA is, your discussion period assignments might be difficult to understand and also graded harshly.
Professor Deblois is an amazing professor and I hope he sees his ratings. He lectures clearly and goes over the same content a lot to make sure you understand the material. His lectures are recorded and his exams are super easy and straight out his slides.
I love this man, he is very caring and explains so well.
Class was easy and interesting. Lecture questions good to help study. Genuine effort to make lectures interesting and easy to understand. Discussion is tedious but not difficult, weekly assignments using google earth pro. He gives lots of extra credit, no excuses to do poorly!!
very nice professor, the test is very easy if you study the slides. The extra credit each week is easy to get, the discussion section might be a little tough but TAs are willing to help.
Professor DeBlois was one of the most caring professors I met! The lectures were straightforward to follow and very interesting too! Make sure to attend discussions because there were some fantastic and fun group projects/assignments that will help you understand and gain some clarity on previous lectures.
Professor Deblois was one of the best professors I had during the pandemic. His lectures were super fun to attend and super engaging. He is a very fair grader and his exams / quizzes are pretty easy if you go over the notes he provides and attend lecture. He is also super funny and is super easy to get a hold of for any questions!
A solid class, easy to follow material and great lectures. As long as you understand the overall material, you'll be set for the class. Clear, straightforward assignments and exams. Overall, a good class.
Doesn't record lecture but posts slides online. You can tell he's very passionate about his field by the way he talks about dinosaurs. The class was really interesting, but it got harder near the end where you had to remember all the different classifications. 2 midterms, 1 final, weekly extra credit Aloha quizzes. Very sweet man!
Prof Deblois really cares about what he teaches and it shows! His lectures are high energy.
I love this man. I wish I could give him higher than a 5.
Super cool professor, the lecture is interesting and its an easy A. All tests are multiple choice and you can get extra credit from online quizes every friday.
Graded by 2 midterms and the final. Weekly Aloha quiz each is 4-question with 5-min time limit worth 1 point max that can be added to exam scores. This class is too big with so many non environmental science or non geology students. Not attend lecture? You definitely will not pass the course!
Such a sweet guy! The tests are multiple choice, but I recommend attending lecture. I didn't and ended up with a B, so up to you. He gives Aloha quizzes that serve as extra credit, but there's quite a bit to memorize for his tests.
Textbook is optional. All exams are multiple choice questions. Aloha quizzes help boost exam scores to 100% max. Exams test materials in a much easier way than covered in class, so 240 students can have 39 full scores. You definitely will not pass if you are absent.
Prof Deblois is probably my favorite professor at Davis. You can tell he is really passionate about what he teaches and it helps make lectures engaging. He offers an extra credit quiz every week to adds points to your midterm scores. There are 2 midterms + a final and the study guide questions + quiz questions replicate the midterm questions.
Awesome professor! Clearly passionate about the material, and explains the content in an engaging way. Provides many analogies to help students more easily understand key concepts. Easy multiple-choice tests as long as you pay attention. Provides extra credit opportunities in the form of practice quizzes. Only downside is no recorded lectures.
Skip class? You won't pass! Graded by 3 multiple choice exams because the class had 200+ students. I got 100% on all three exams, so no need of the weekly Aloha quiz to help my score.
Deblois is really passionate about Geology and this class is great! Weekly extra credit quizzes that go toward your midterm and final exams. This class was simple and exams were just based off of slides presented in class. Definitely recommend taking!
I really enjoyed attending Dr. Deblois' lectures for this class all last quarter, due to his infectious enthusiasm for the subject of geology. He was also very helpful during his office hours, and the multiple choice midterms and final were all very straightforward.
Professor Deblois is AMAZING. I took two of his classes, and he is always engaging and passionate about what he teaches. He is the best professor I've had here. Even tho I'm not a GEL major, he makes me want to change my major! There are weekly extra credits to boost your score, one midterm and final both multiple choices. Super easy GE class!
Took this class with GEL001, super easy, and the contents were almost the same as GEL001, which made exams pretty easy cause I got tested on the same stuff. Professor Deblois is amazing, very kind, and willing to answer questions after class. Weekly ALOHA extra credit quizzes, two midterms, and one final multiple-choice exam. Easy 2 unit course!
take this class the professor is really nice and has little extra credit quizzes every week. it's such an easy class you just have to make sure you do your notes and assignments which are open notes plus you get 2 attempts.
The class was easy at first until it got to the last 7 lectures. It was about 7 chapters crammed into 3 weeks and the final was cumulative. But he was super nice. Extra credit opportunities (DO IT). He posts lecture slides so you can get by with those, but it is a memorization class. You're going to have to memorize a lot. No open note or curve.
I love Professor Deblois! The class is very chill, and it's easy to get an A if you just read the slides. His lectures are always interesting, and it's the only class I actually enjoy coming to! It's like watching a dinosaur documentary. He's also very nice and super accommodating. Take him if you can!
Lwk too much work for a 2 unit GE... the first two midterms were easy but the final required so much memorization of crazy long dinosaur names and clades. final average was like a 75. no curve but he gives extra credit points and also extra credit qs on tests.
Professor DeBlois is an amazing person and an even better teacher. The course was interesting and he is clearly passionate about it. There were no homework assignments, just 2 midterms and a final. He offers weekly aloha quizzes which are extra credit points that go towards the exams. If you study the slides and pay attention you should easily pass
I skipped lectures a few too many times but read and studied the slides and study questions on the slides and managed to 100%+ the 2nd midterm. I think he's a really great professor though and would definitely recommend you take any of his classes. A lot of opportunities for extra credit and no cost for missing lecture besides it not being recorded
Prof Deblois is as sweet as a puppy. He is from Hawaii and likes to do "aloha fridays" where he wears a Hawaiian shirt and gives you a bonus quiz that will be added to your exam grades. 2 midterms and a final. His slides are super detailed and he goes more into detail verbally but you can still pass if you skip class if you just study the slides.
Professor Deblois is truly a gem at UCD and definitely one of the best professors I've ever had. He makes information so digestible in class and posts his lecture slides which is really helpful. He offers extra credit that boost your exam scores, which the exams themselves are very easy if you know the material. 12/10 recommend!
One of the kindest profs I've ever had -- so funny and you can tell how much he loves geology/his students. Class itself was super easy -- he breaks everything down so clearly/posts lecture slides/gives weekly ec assignments Study qs on lecture slides -- midterms exactly based on those questions Chill weekly discussion where you look at real rocks
Weekly questions are so similar to exams and prof DeBlois offers extra credit!! Attendance is mandatory but I missed way too many lects (not recorded) and passed with FLYING colors- just rewrite the slide info the day before and pay attention to reading the phylogenetic trees. Best prof ever: he truly cares about the students and the subject
I studied hard, but I just cannot ace it because his test is hard! the grades for average is about B-, or 24/30(even lower). I followed the steps reviewing, but his tests are definitely not that easy. His test always contains some detailed questions, even depth? Where is it in slides? Anyways, I regret taking GEL012 instead.
Extracredits is changed this quarter, and the maximum of test can only be 100%. The material is harder in later slides. Also, his lectures are not that helpful. If you don't attend, that's totally fine.
He's really sweet and adorable! But this class was kind of like bis 2c and b tbh... It wasn't hard tho just a lot of memorization. If you just study the lecture slides really well you'll do great on exams.
easy A class
Gives lots of opportunities for extra credit through quizzes and bonus questions on the midterm. Class isn't recorded but I rarely went and just used the information on the slides to study and did fine. The final's kinda hard only because you have to memorize random dinosaur names and their traits, but it's doable
The class is incredibly easy if you attend lectures. He makes sure that you pretty much can't fail by offering extra credit in the form of weekly aloha quizzes. He also changes the grading if the class average is low for a midterm. I somehow have over 100% in the class after midterm 2 due to the wonky grading.
I have not seen a professor more enthusiastic about his subject than Dr. Deblois! Lectures are well-formatted, easy to understand and very clear (he loves analogies and uses them a lot!). Tests are fair and extra credit is generous and always contains helpful learning material. Warning: he is VERY Hawaiian...
Great professor, super passionate, fun class, recommend taking. Just review everything the day before the exam and you'll be good. Lectures not necessary but very interesting and fun. Lots of extra credit which really helps. Easy but required weekly discussion sections, so don't skip. Overall recommend!
Good professor! Love that guy, he offers a lot of opportunities to do good. Lectured aren't needed but I always went and was a good listen.
Great and engaging lectures, really good guy. Tests are multiple choice and not too hard, gives extra credit quizzes every week.
Really nerdy professor in the best way possible. Definitely one of my favorite professors here. You can tell he's really passionate about the material he covers. Exams were not too difficult as long as you studied the slides, and were filled with references to Star Wars and Dune. Don't miss discussion!!!!!!!
Amazing course, not a free A or jUst for dino nerds, a lot of science and history, heavy lectures and recommend note taking. Tests were fair, feedback was clear and amazing, loved the zoom sessions to review test results with the professor.
Pretty good class if you know how to study, class is ONLY grades by 2 midterms and final. No hw and doesn't record lecture and attendance is not mandatory. You do have to work to get an A.
A bit jaded, he has a routine and sticks to it. Doesn't go above and beyond but sticks to the course material and engages as expected. Very low energy but interesting topics from a lifetime of work in geology. Probably doesnt care to get caught up in fruitless rabbitholes in order to protect his head. Nice course would take again
Amazing lectures, really cares about what he's teaching and wants to see students succeed. Graded only by exams but the tests were all multiple choice and not too difficult if you engage with the lectures. Overall loved the class.
Don't expect an easy A, it's notes heavy, w/a huge emphasis on memorization. 2 midterms+1 final as well as quizzes before the tests that allowed up to 2 bonus points on the exam. HOWEVER, the highest you can get on the exams is 100 so if you got a 30/30, & had EC points from the quizzes, your exam score won't go any higher. Not worth it for 2 units
My favorite class ever so far! No textbook so you must attend lecture to understand the material and the slides. Found myself rarely needing to study or take notes because the lectures were so fascinating that they stuck in my head as most of it isn't memorization, but conceptual. Touches on many things we already learned about in BIO 3
He's very sweet. One of the only professors that I've had that doesn't make exam questions that fry your brain just trying to read them, the exams are super straightforward and simple. There's no homework which is super nice and he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Cool professor, cares about what he teaches. Lecture heavy, and lectures can get boring but they are helpful. Scantron exams that are easy enough and study questions are accurate to what is on the exams accurate to a 2 unit workload.
This class was a really great experience as a first-year! I often missed class since I was really sick, but his lectures are thorough and the exams are very easy. He consolidated the love I have for dinosaurs so much that he inspired me to do a geology minor with an emphasis in paleobiology. He's fr a goat and an friendly, 100% would recommend.
Great professor, most of the grade is on the test so I recommend to attend lecture even though is not mandatory it helps a lot to understand the topics on the class, very open to participation and very helpful after class or during office hours, gives lots of extra credit so don't expect to have a curve on tests, great professor on dinosaurs!
He tends to ramble a lot making it hard to pay attention, but you had to since the things that were on the lecture were on the midterms. His extra credit quizzes and homework assignments really helped before the midterms as practice. This was a pretty chill class otherwise and very easy if you just want the credit. His final was a bit too easy.
