DeCamp is very challenging.

Very helpful. Works for the students and is always trying to help!
Best professor ever

very good professor!
the material is hard, his teaching style is great and he's very helpful, and he's just a nice guy.
BORING!!!!!!!!!!
Very intimidating and he knows it. Anytime I talk to him, I feel like he's uninterested. Not very encouraging.
good teacher
Material is very difficult but his office door is always open! I learned a lot.
Considering how hard the class is, he is a very good Prof! I learned so much and I really like his system. I really wish I could have taken him for Orgo 2.
I agree, he is quite intimidating. I studied more than what my grade showed. Better than Allen, but not a magnificient teacher, just a good one for organic chemistry. Sexiest man in science building.
Very good teacher, I learned a lot from him. Tests were hard, but Chem 225 is a very hard class. Definately prefer him over Allen just because he is a little more clear.
BEST PROFESSOR IN THE WORLD. EXTREMELY INTIMIDATING. BUT HE IS VERY HELPFUL
Amazing teacher. The best prof at Dearborn. The course is hard and demanding but he teaches it well.
He's an amazing teacher. Makes a difficult class so clear and understandable. His tests aren't so bad if you carefully read his notes. I would definitely take him again, one of my favorite professors.
Good teacher, organized, always prepared, never left in dark. Extremely clear and helpful. I Love him. Mo y saad
Intimidating? Maybe if you're a chump. Two words: serious badass; really knows his****.
I am a woman, not a chump, and yes, his demeanor is what's intimidating. I agree, he is the king of Chemistry at UMD. Not the best teacher I've ever had, though.
If you study and pay attention, you can do good. Yes, he is intimidating, but he is so amazing. If you get to know him, he is really nice and helpful. Always willing to help you to understand, and shows that he wants to help you. GREAT PROFESSOR!!!
Great teacher, very helpful, very nice, very approachable, really fair

ok, everyone needs to get off decamps jock, he s not THAT good. he just loves his job too much
I totally agree, he is not the best teacher at all, but, compared to most in science building, he's top notch, which is a shame. He knows the material and answers questions precisely. Much better than Allen, still again, not best int the world. STudy hard!
he was the most incredible proffessor i ever had. he made such a hard class so incredibly easy. it make me ALMOST want to be orgo major :)
Dr. Decamp is the man. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is caring, understanding, and a great friend. I'm going to miss Dr.D when this semester is over. I definetly recommend Dr.Decamp for Organic Chemistry.

Decamp is the Shizzle. Some might call him rude because of his sarcastic, biting sense of humor, but that's my kind of humor, so I like him. He's helpful, funny, articulate and straight forward. His tests are hard but they're not impossible, so ppl who whine about it need to toughen up.
Good prof. overall. He does a good job teaching a rather challenging class. If you keep up and study, you should be fine. No tricks.
Tip # 1 Do not procrastinate. Tip # 2 Read all handouts and know every concept. Tip # 3 When he stops explaining all the mechanisms in lecture, use your book and LEARN mechanism. Tip # 4 Do EVERY homework assignment for the first test. You will need the practice.
very good porf. If you read his handouts and do the assignments you should be fine. He also, gives old exams to highlight the most important concepts. His exams are not easy but if you study and keep up with the metterials you will do good.
Easily the best prof on campus. I didnt get the best grade and I still found him amazing. Exams while hard are fair, the grade you get is the grade you earn. The class is all about effort and you need to put some in. DeCamp is basically the man and sets the standard for all professors to follow.
If you like monotonous, difficult, know-it-all, stiffly stifferson professors then HE IS YOUR MAN. Best advice, try to avoid him unless absolutely necessary. Can make your grade suffer and it's only an intro to chem. Exams often ask "trick questions" so they may not accurately reflect ability. BOOOO
Dr. DeCamp teaches one of the most intimidating courses offered to any undergrad. Your grade is a direct reflection of your effort. He offers xtracredit if you catch his mistakes (shameless)and ALWAYS stays after to meet with you, even 5:00 on a Friday afternoon. He is standard prof's should follow.
Decamp is a cross between Darth Vader, Tony Soprano, and Homer Simpson... Doh!
DeCamp is DeMan
Decamp may be the most overrated teacher at U of M, but that doesn't mean he's not good. If you take the class in the summer be prepared to be on your toes. With tests every week you have to be willing to study. He gives a good curve, about 8 percent. Decamp favors students so try to get on his good side.
DeCamp is De man. All I got to say is DeCamp is De best teacher at u of m. He's not a easy teacher, but he is De most clear and understandable teacher at school, bar none. He give a test every week, but he prepares you for each one. If you have to take organic chemistry you better take it with De man, DeCamp.
I was aweful at Chemistry until I had him. He goes out of his way to help you if you are willing to put in the time and effort. He is awesome, and if you are taking Chemisty, take it with him..
Hes the BEST TEACHER I've had so far in college...he always motivates u to teach and learn the material. Just because of him i was always motivated to do good in his class, i mean the exams were tough but hey its ORGO who said it would be easy..so TAKE AS MANY CLASSES AS U CAN WITH DR. DeCamp :-D
u know dat i will be the 1st one to tell abt decamp very gud prof, but his 2nd exam sucked Asss badly more then ohio state beating michigan, hopefully he will understand that we are trained under allen for chem 225, comon make it lil easy baller....
awesome teacher, he explains everything so clearly, i never understood chem till i took his class, all exams and quizes are very fair (although they are hard, but that is expected w orgo, he is always there to help you and doesnt try to make his class horribly hard, cant say enough good things about him
awesome professor he tells us exactly what will be on the exam with exact format. he gives us an old exam which helps out a lot. i can honestly say that he is the best chem professor i have had i had a hard time w/ chem untill i had decamp.
okay he is a good person but as far as his exams goes damn! they are hard and suck, they require a lot of study and applying everything, Nothing is straight forward. if you like chem your in heaven otherwise you see, he will NICKEL AND DIME YOU TO DEATH (a decamp quote)
HANDS DOWN BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!. he was soo nice and was sooo easy and was so friendly. he was always there when i needed extra help or just to talk to for guidance. must take him. and his exams are good too.
Grades people differently based on how capable they are. Favors bio majors. Does not give the same amount of partial credit to different people. Very biased. Also very pompous. The man has an ego the size of the sun and does not only seem very bothered by questions (from people who aren't his favorites) but is also very rude. He's a jerk.
THE BEST PROFESSOR I"VE EVER HAD!!!!!!!!!! Orgo is suppose to be the hardest subject, but the way he teaches it makes it so much easier and duable. Record his lectures, listen to the lectures, re-write your notes and understand each lecture througly and a guaranteed A-
Professor DeCamp is a great professor. Orgo is a hard class - period. Expect that and prepare. DeCamp is very organized and very helpful. He's always in his office and he has a great website - use it. Don't buy the book by Jones. It's horrible I promise you won't understand it. I studied notes and slides and got an A. Work hard and so can you.
THE WORST TEACHER ON PLANET EARTH! STILL USES HIS NOTES FROM WHEN HE FIRST STARTED TEACHING. EXAMS ARE DEADLY. HE IS BIASED AND IF HE DONT LIKE YOU YOUR SCREWED. IF HE IS TH ONLY TEACHER TEACHING THIS COURSE I RECOMMED YOU TO TAKE IT AT A DIFFERENT SCHOOL. THIS TEACHER THINKS HE IS THE BEST WHEN HE REALLY SUCKS.
Decamp = great. He is funny, smart, and wants us to learn. He is very into real applications of organic chemistry, so the more examples you do, the more successful you'll be at doing his real life examples. I wish I took it in the fall though, because work plus this class made it rough on me. I definitely recommend him. Student EVERY NITE
ok, 6 tests, 1 drop, smalllll curve, final is 125 points of the class total 500. study hard, not nite before like me,lol(get old exams)
Disregard any negative comments about DeCamp. He doesn't play favorites, and even if he did, he shows you exactly what the ranges are for certain grades at the end. He helps his students ALOT! He will answer your emails very fast, I seriously think he refreshes every half hour.I promise that he is the easiest orgo teacher you can take at any school
All I have to say is this man is a liar...the most two-faced person I have ever met. Beware of his fascade....he is a creepy old man!!!
He is very nice person , and a good teacher. You just got to study.
This guy is a very nice helpful guy. I don't care what anyone says, hes fair and understanding and answers all the questions you ask. What professor gives handouts on everything you need to know and study. Tape record lecture though, he talks fast, so pay attention in class, its difficult, and study hard but its orgo what do you expect
DeCamp is the best professor! do not listen to what anyone says, he is DEFINITELY not pompous or arrogant. He is very friendly, and always willing to help. He answers everyones questions, and has very fair exams. Orgo is not a fun class, so just get over it. I personally enjoyed him as a professor, you just have to study the material. I love him!!!
i took this class last summer, you don't have to read the book, it's too complicated and a waste of time, just go through your class notes and the handouts a million times and do all the practice problems twice (don't bother with the ones in the book), and you'll get an A
Decamp is De-Man. GREAT guy, NOT biased or **** (I'm Southeast Asian, I know). Super helpful, very smart, not arrogant at all. Doesn't show favoritism, but does appreciate hard work from students. Work hard and shut up. Orgo is hard, no matter where you take it.
Mark Decamp is the best science professor that i've had ever! He explains things throughly and breaks the information down to a level that you can understand! Do the work sheets, read the c.p. carefully and take notes and you should do fine in the class. I ended up getting an A- and I highly recommend this class! MARK DE CAMP IS DE MAN FOR SURE!
Great professor take him!
he is a good teacher. dont waist your money buying the text book for orgo 1 or 2. the hadouts and attendance are the most important . the books are useless.study everyday and dont listen to students who tell you that orgo is hard , there is nothing hard if you have a strong believe to be successful.
He is really nice guy. Curves big time and gives partial credits. His lectures however are BORING! majority of student taught themselves the materials and tried hard not to fall asleep (although I caught couple of student snoring during his class). Not a great teacher but an alright one. I guess comparing to the other UMD teachers he's the man!
if u have to take orgo, take it with DeCamp! He is EXTREMELY helpful and he curves like CRAZY! i'm not saying the class is easy, so u have to STUDY and understand the stuff but DeCamp makes the struggle worthwhile
Had him for both Orgo 1 & 2. This man needs to learn how to lecture. Totally a snore-fest. Picks favorites like no other, so do well or he'll look at you like you're an idiot forever. He's also pretty weird as a person, makes strange faces when you talk to him. He needs to retire and go away already! The sooner the better!
Had him for both 225 and 226, and he was great for both. Extremely helpful professor, just ask him any questions you have during recitation. Very easy if you put in just a little bit of effort. He is more than a fair teacher; he offers lots of extra credit on his tests, which allows you to score over 100. One of the best profs at UMD.
this guy is worthless. what good is his phd from princeton if he cant teach? i taught myself everything in this course n he didnt go over even the basics of mechanisms. wth dude?he sucks a*s at teaching the material. you will hate chemistry. idk who leaves him good rating. overall, horrible NOT EZ. I do NOT recommend him for those taking MCAT/PCAT
I took this professor over the summer semester, and am not pleased with his effort to teach the class. He is very vague, unenthusiastic about the subject, and does not know how to lecture. Also, he doesn't relate anything of the first 3/4 of the class to mechanisms. You will have to teach yourself. He is an easy A, but you won't learn anything.
Not as great as every1 made him out to be. Doesnt go over rxns and mechanisms much, just the easy stuff like memorizing definitions. Got a B+, while missin an exam and failing two. Missed two and a half weeks of lecture. Curves like crazy, final was easy, didn't learn much in class or out, but with a little effort, could have been an easy A.
He is not good at explaining the mterial. But is easy grader. 81% is an A-. I would not raccomend for those wanting to learn orgo, Take Allen if possible, or take the course at a different institute. This professor thinks he's the shiznit because he taught horribly for so long. I got an A but still have to retake the course or I'm screwed for orgo2.
this guy sucks beyond belief. i can't believe he's been teaching for such a long time. idc if he has a princeton phd and whatnot, but would never take another class with him again. the exams are not that hard if you know your stuff. but you won't learn sht by goin to lctr, n SI is to packd to ask q's. this guy is just a gimmick. brings shame to UMD
6 exams n lowest one is dropped. too bad that the one dropped is the last one guaranteed because he won't teach anything to do with mechanisms or rxns. he just puts up a bunch of energy diagrams and mumbles about them in lecture. i don't know why people say that this prof is good. YOU MUST READ THE BOOK. it appears decamp leaves himslf ratings
I think that DeCamp is an alright teacher. Although you do need to read the book alot, because his lectures are not informative. He is easy when curving. 60% is a B, and 80% is an A. Don't just rely on the curve though. Alot of people make that mistake. The last 2 exams are tough, so study hardcore. Everyone in my class got a C or higher.
there is 2 orgo professors at UMD, allen and decamp. i took them both, and i would have to say that allen is definitely better than decamp. decamp was very overrated on this site before i took him. for everyone from annarbor who comes to umd for an easy A look bak, becaus he is not easy A. also, he will shove your questions off saying he will pass.
He is the easiest orgo teacher in the world. If ur looking for a definite way to pass orgo, look no more. As long as you have a pulse, and you have the tuition, take him, and you'll pass that darn organic chemistry. his lectures really boring though, but easy A if you wanna get into your program
he is the worst professor in the world. he doesn't teach anything. if u have the old tests u r set, otherwise soo screwed. u be sitting in his class thinking wtf is this guy talking about. the correlation bw lecture and exams is hard to see. i did well, but he is still a horrible professor. and he doesn't even have much knowledge about chemistry
I got a good grade in his class, the highest possible! But this guy is overrated, DO NOT GET A recommendation LETTER FROM HIM, he will tear you into pieces! He does not know how to teach, I just taught myself. He does not know how to communicate with students and he definitely has favorites!!Might smile in your face but he will talk behindurback
amazing teacher, though if you hate chem, you'll hate the class, which is very visual so study hard.very precise on telling you what will be on exams/quizzes, if you have questions just ask in recitation. average final grade was ~40-50% which curved to C+/B-, but his lectures flow very well from subject to subject, i'm devastated hes not doing 226.
he is too easy and you dont learn anything. lectures are oh so boring, no one even bothers to show up. not recommended for premeds or for people who have to take 226 with a different professor.
as everyone already said, he sucks. even as the premed advisor, he doesn't really know much. extremely lazy professor. doesn't know how to teach properly, shouldn't be teaching at all.
whoever got a good grade in this class got extremely lucky. the class was a complete nightmare. he needs to learn that a curve doesn't make up for lack of knowledge. the book is just as horrible as he is. it's written in some weird literature format just like his notes. if you want to honestly earn an A, get the francis carey orgo book
To be honest, it seems that many of these people simply weren't willing to do the work required for organic. It's a hard subject in general, but if you listen to DeCamp and ask him questions, it's not that bad. At least one person in my class managed to get a B without ever buying the book. Just pay attention, study, and stop whining.
the class was rather easy, but he is not good teacher because he doesn't explain well. he just reads off of his very old notes. sometimes the class is in doubt to whether he actually knows the material he is teaching. however it's an easy A, but you don't get much out of the class. Not recommended if you plan to take 226 with someone else
Firstly, don't buy the textbook he tells you to buy--it sucks and is inefficient, but instead, buy the francis carey book, thats where he gets his test q's from. next, do the old exams. you will be set for an A- that way. I am a complete idiot, and I aced the class, hence idiot-proof class.
Im halfway through the semester and i absolutely love this teacher! He tells you EXACTLY what is going to be on the exams, and gives you plenty of practice sheets and one of his old exams. Very nice guy and funny too. Just pay attention in class and read the book and you'll be golden. EC on every exam, and they're not even very hard
Great professor. Tests are tricky but it's organic chemistry. It's a hard class regardless who you take. He post's his old test and plenty of optional worksheets on c-tools. I recommend doing them and also attending SI sessions. Do not take this class if you're not willing to put the time in.
he really is that bad. he displays no enthusiasm at all, and has no interest in what he's teaching. but...ANYone can get an A in this guys class. I got a C in gen chem and an A in his class. Reason is that you just need to know how to do the old exams and your set.
not bad as a prof, the subject's hard as it is. get a hold of his old exams, and practice them, and his worksheets. 5 exams (1 drop) + final. i worked really hard and got a B+ good luck
First of all, before you listen to any of the raters take a look at their interest level before taking the class. How can you take advice from people who had 0 interest in the class, that is setting yourself up for failure. Read your notes, attend lecture, attend recitation, do practice exams and all his worksheets and ASK QUESTIONS when stuck.
Ok so to start I can't stand chemistry but professor decamp made me love orgo. This is a tough class but put in the time and you'll do great. He posts old exams and a lot of worksheets. The more exams and worksheets the more prepared you'll be. Study, this isn't genchem. Good luck
i have never struggled so much in a class. i had to completely rely on external sources to get the grade i got. the book makes no sense whatsoever at all. his lecture is jumbled up and all over the place and indirect. it's like he's beating around the bush to make sure we don't understand the concepts. his teaching method is set for failure.
he is horrible. dont take him no matter what. he just spends the time reading right off the slides. he also needs to know that orgo goes way beyond resonance and the VSEPR theory. If you show him ur good with resonance and the VSEPR theory, you'll get an A. it seems that's all his class is about.
Had to learn the material on my own. Definitely not the best orgo instructor but is better than the rest at this university.
he is an OK teacher, not that great teachingwise. one thing that i do like about him is that he keeps ochem to a sane level. doesn't try to weed out students, and doesn't try to screw over students. students who do bad in his class are ones who screw themselves over. with decamp, what you put in is what u get out(unlike other ochem professors)
DeCamp is a great professor for Orgo II. He sounds a bit like a textbook, but this also means he's very clear. He answers questions well and offers solid advice for success. Nice guy. He goes by a class coursepack, which is SO helpful for studying. His tests are very straight-forward, so you will do fine if you study hard.
the class is retarded easy. don't buy the textbook. just buy the coursepack and use it as a reference. for studying and learning, use the slides on ctools. just go through the slides once before lecture and once after lecture and once before the test, and you can get an A+ that way. don't bother with old exams.
First off, this is not an easy class so ignore the comment below his one. This class takes a lot of time and effort to fully understand the material covered and anyone who says it is easy is just lying to you. You can't get an A+ or even an A without putting in a lot of effort. If you don't believe me, ask Dr. Decamp to see previous final grades.
First, you won't get a good grade without putting effort into this class. This class is information intensive, and it's a lot of work, graded only by tests and quizzes. 5 quizzes, 5 exams, drops the lowest from each category, plus a cumulative mult-choice final. Go to SI sessions. I devoted 4-5 hrs each week to get an A-.
good teacher. read slides before and after lecture, and do handouts and know methodology behind problems on the old exams to get an A. book is unnecessary. sometimes he is a bit dry, unless questions are asked. most students did not bother to show up, but a lot less effort is needed if attended.
Class wasn't very interesting, but for me organic is really just a dry subject. I got around 90 on the first two exams and 70 on the others because I just stopped studying and didn't take any notes. Ended up with a B. Can't complain, but I don't feel like I retained much. Problematic for those taking the MCAT, perhaps.
He gives out only a certain number of "A's" in the course, basically a handful. Although there are some A-'s and even more in the B range.. his grading is extremely ambiguous. Attending class is honestly not even mandatory, considering he reads off the slides. Overall, an alright professor, but nothing too special.
Be able to memorize, don't expect to be entertained. Fairly challenging, not sure what Decamp's motives where. Can't tell if he genuinely values the student, or if hes just a systematized component of the educational machine. Occasionally one can catch a flash of compassion in his eyes, but most of the time he seems reserved and difficult to read
more of a clown rather than a teacher. majority of students don't attend lecture, and as a result, help the ones that do show up. class is based on a bell curve, so he has to give out A's, to a certain amount of students, regardless of how dumb they are. This doesn't make those kids smarter than the ones that get a B or a C. book is worthless
