Very confusing!! Too much work!! Nice guy but could be a little more clear with his lectures and diagrams. Writing is suppose to be fun, not made as a chore. Lighten up a little and talk to students more often!
Does not teach what the subject title/ matter supposed to be. Goes off on many philosophical tangents. Texts have nothing to do with the course subject. Does not give good directions on how to do paper assignments. Leaves it up to students to come up with

A highly intelligent teacher, but difficult and a very hard grader
I would reccommend Dr. Delancy to anyone wanting to actually learn here at Loyola. I would always feel smart and educated after class. You will learn how to develop and intellectual argument after taking him.
Loser
Hardest English class. Very interlligent but needs to bring it down a notch for the students, speaks as though he is speaking to a group of PHD's. Grrrrrr!
he is so unclear, and grades, as if English is a math course... very ambiguous, but grades very specifically, looking for specific ways that you set up your paper STAY AWAY
Nice when non-class related. Very unclear when commenting on papers. Is willing to help. Expectations are unknown because he is very inconsistent. While a challenge is good, the constant devil's advocate perspective provides little hope for success.
RUN FOR DEAR LIFE! if you want to spend a semester doodling in your notebook and trying not to jump out the window then be my guest. I cannot stress enough how horrible this class is and what a horrible teacher he is. He talks only to hear himself.
Definately the worst teacher that I have had. You have to change your entire writing style for him or you get a bad grade. Ridiculous. Also, an extremely boring class from start to finish unless a TA is teaching.
Extremely hard teacher. Grades as if students are all grad students. I advise you to stay away from this class.
His course was very challenging. I got a lot out of the lectures-- he is very into what he is talking about. You'll really learn from taking him but you've got to work hard.
Ok, so he's hard. He's also excellent and you'll be a better writer after taking the class. The class is always entertaining and you don't have to do any of the reading. Just accept the B.
you either make or your take it
ok, here's the deal, hard hard teacher. Confusing, is the word of the day. Very hard grader, all papers have to be in his style of writing or expect to fail. Definitly knows what HE's talkin about. Dont recomend it, take my word for it.Good guy tho
okay, so Delancy really is a nice guy, but his class is awful.I spent every period forcing myself to stay awake and watching him draw circles on the board. Your writing style is not good enough for him, but stick it out and you'll get a decent grade
Worse class I have ever taken at Loyola. I am now a Junior and look back with nothing but regret having signed up for that course. I went from getting good grades in AP to his class where he gave me a C because I didn't write exactly to his archaic form.
Ok, keep in mind i'm an english major. I like his class alot. he does try and keep the class interested by engaging us into mind boggling debates. he's very nice and willing to help out. although i'll probably get a C in the class, i've learned alot.
ok, usually if one puts 50 hrs into writing a 4 pg paper, they expect 2 get a good grade. or at least a "good try." but no. delancey sux. worst teacher i ever had. didnt learn a thing, except how to feel bad about myself.
Delancey's tough. This is true. However, if you attend class, pay attention and do the work, you'll be transformed into a much better writer by the end of the semester. Extremely concise with his critiques and he's always willing to help.
As everyone has already said - delancey is hard....but he'll make you a better writer...AND he's dreamy......
Tough but if you work at it you will get a decent grade. It's worth going to see him on his office hours. Try to participate, notes don't mean much in this class.
terrible teacher. never received anything less than a B+ on an essay before AND after this class. he is WAY too into himself and just an overall awful experience. stay clear of him unless you don't mind conforming your mind to an outdated form of writing
If you take this class, you will dread going to it every day. Very boring and hard to follow, absolutely impossible to read what is written on the board, although quite entertaining. Willing to meet with you about papers, but grades really hard.
Very challenging teacher, but a really nice guy & always willing to help.He grades on improvement,I got two C's, a B and then an A and ended up getting A in the class. Do ALL hw and have him look at rough drafts before final due dates,if u do u'll be fine
He's super hard, but I enjoyed the class; he definitely knows his stuff. Take the class if you want to have a solid english prof, who will cut you down,...don't take it if you're looking for an A, or for that matter a B in English 105 or 106.
Delancy grades very hard but is extremely helpful. Also he sounds exactly like Ian Malcolm (aka Jeff Goldblum) from Jurassic Park. He is the man.
You'll learn a lot and be glad you took this class when you're done, but you'll hate every minute of it while you're in it. You will be a better writer when you're done, and DeLancey isn't too hard on the eyes, either.
Theory class was difficult, but intersting. Lectures are good and class was enjoyable, but readings were hard. Fair (but not easy) on grades and willing to help students. Overall, I enjoyed him. (Not too bad looking either, for a prof)
not too smart but thinks he is
horrifying... avoid like the clap
undeniably awful. I mean really, really, bad. So bad you just can't believe. I'm almost a month removed from it and I still wake up in cold sweats... AVOID with all of your might.
Get out of this class if at all possible unless you want to spend your semester listening to the same lecture EVERYDAY and learning English like a math teacher would present it. All Delancy did was draw crazy circles on the board.
Don't take if you want an A, thinks a little too highly of himself
The most retarded teacher who lives in his own world and teaches according to his own world!
Delancy is awesome! The course is definitely hard, but it will make you a better writer. He's also exactly like Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park, he even keeps his shirt unbuttoned a little.
A Ted Danson look-a-like who refuses to give A's..you know grade inflation. He is arrogant but is very helpful and lenient when it comes to late assignments. Good luck getting even a B+ even if you are a great writer.
This class was awful! Horrible grader and teacher, and boring might I add. I am an A student when it comes to writing papers and he gave me all C's. I must say though,he is willing to help you out if you go to his office hours, which are of course at 7am
He's is a great teacher, he knows his stuff pretty well. He is a fair grader and you can not get lower than an B if you actually do the assignments and put some effort into the papers. Also, he is very easy to reach, by hours or by phone.
INSANE. Same lecture everday and incoherant insanity on the board. Dont take this class, it wont teach you anything worth knowing.
Very nice teacher, knew what he was teaching. Papers not very difficult, yet important. Does a thing with collection of papers you hold on to, don't lose VERY IMPORTANT. Overall, very pleasant teacher.
Same lecture every single day. God only knows what he writes on the board during lecture. The papers are somewhat easy and he is very open about providing help when asked. Don't expect an 'A' but expect his unbuttoned shirt in class everyday.
Delancey was my favorite teacher before transfering. His class actually stretched my mind, and improved my writing. take his class if you enjoy philosophical thinking. Hes more concerned with impoving his students' minds then handing out easy As.
Anybody that wants to understand the flow and pattern of logic should take this course. He's totally Socrates II so expect to answer questions, its how he teaches, but answer honestly and you'll get a lot more. By the by...unbuttoned shirt, WAY sexy.
hated the class at first, but have learned immensely more than other 106 classes. focuses on argument style-very philosophical-he will stretch your mind. can choose own controversies. Getting A is tough, but do-able with hard work. friendly;learns all students' names and greets us outside classroom.
Definitely a challenging class for me: getting an A is not easy on papers. Classes sometimes get dull (as most English classes do), but DeLancey really knows his stuff. Watch for the unbuttoned shirt and the really cute (slightly nerdy) laugh.
He is a very nice guy, but the class is very boring. If you have a prior knowledge of post- modernism, it might not be so bad. But if not, forget it. He is a nice guy, who tries to get good class participation, but is a bit boring if you aren't interested.
He's a nice guy however he can talk for hours on over the same thing. Post-Modernism, blah blah... Do not expect an A for this class
You will not get an A in this class. Very boring, too much work.
Really philosophical teacher...sometimes his thoughts are far out. But amazing teacher who is willing to have one on one meetings for every paper. Class is not hard if you do the papers. Highly recommend this teacher.
More difficult than I liked, but he really improved my composition skills. Definately felt like I was taking a real college course, and can honestly say that I walked away a better writer. Very nice guy, types a whole page in response to your paper. Take his class if you are serious about writing-
DeLancey is very challenging and very difficult. He will drive you crazy in the beginning but in the end it is worth taking him because you learn so much. Grades on improvement. Take him only if you really want to learn how to write an argument well! Would recommend to serious students.
DeLancey is a wonderful teacher. He is very helpful if you take the time to see him. He has really helped me improve my writing skills. He is a very intelligent man, who will teach you to bend your mind in ways you never thought possible. If you are interested in really learning, take him.
We were supposed to write papers using Aristotelian Model of Argument. In theory it seemed to be very interesting but in practice it sucked. His lectures were rather interesting and the grading policy was rather fair but grading scale was very high.

Any A student will receive a B in his class, because he refuses to acknowledge those students who enter the class as exceptional writers. Grading on improvement is not fair. If you have confidence in your writing skills, don't let him know-if you think as highly of him as he does, you will do well.
ready to goto med school, and he gave me the only B+ I have ever earned in school, ever, ever.... go figure
what a horrible prof. no traces of nature in a "nature in lit" class. what did we read? the bible. his behavior/demeanor are inapropriate. avoid him.
what a prick. he grades like a maniac. any decent writer will be struggling for a C. You cannot follow his trains if thought, even if you were inside his head. stay away from his night classes...your imagination will get a better workout than your pen.
2 1/2 hours of Delancey is not recommended unless you enjoy listening to a person state their opinions in a long boring ego boosting sermon. He is not helpful if you try to get advice on a paper, rather he tells you that people usually get more confused when he tries to help them.
The class is challenging and boring, but you learn a lot about how to write better. He talks all class about who knows what and it is always about the same thing.
DeLancey is awesome. He's very philisophical and interesting to listen to. In this class you don't only learn how to write but you learn how to think. He grades based on improvement so only your last two papers really count for your grade. Great teacher!
great teacher
Wow!He very restictive on your writting sytle. All you do is write arugmentive paper based on the Aristolian Form of argument, which is not fun, nor is he clear on how to write it. He grades based on improvement, but that did not work to my advantage! I ended up with a C.
Very challeging class. Those people who say that A is not possible probably didn't work hard enough. If you do ALL exercises and follow his model, then you will get an A.You learn a lot from Delancey. He will teach how to deepen your reasoning.Take him but only if you are willing to work hard enough.
Great teacher.Like someone already said he is very philosophical. He will not only teach you how to write excellent arguments but also how to deepen your logic. I learned in this class far more than all other courses I have taken.
DeLancey is a wonderful teacher. He is very helpful if you take the time to see him. He has really helped me improve my writing skills. He is a very intelligent man, who will teach you to bend your mind in ways you never thought possible. If you are interested in really learning, take him.
Delancey sucked, he was hands down the worst professor I had at Loyola. I learned more in hs than his classes, never got anything lower than an A in the English dept (as an honors major) except in his classes. Boring, annoying, stupid papers.
The guy was okay. His papers were difficult to write at the time because I was never certain for what he was looking. This was also freshman year. His comments were not always helpful, so the objective usually remained blurry. The lecture was interesting,
He should give the 2nd and 3rd button of his shirt a chance.
wow. this man is confusing. he draws the most random diagrams i have ever seen and he made robert frost confusing and painful. i dont even know whats going on half of the time.
So ya this guy is super tough but he's also really cool. There is no midterm or final but there are 3 papers that make up your grade but he bases your grade not just on the score but also on improvement. If you ask for help he is super cool and explains everything so you do better. He is hard tough and confusing.
horrible man
I think this guy is great. Seriously. He's a good professor and he teaches well. His subject matter is interesting too. I didn't expect to like this class, but it's my favorite.
I think he's a great professor. He's difficult to follow, but if you attend class and pay attention it all comes together. Different from any writing class I've ever taken. He's tough, but if you follow his rules you should do fine. Plus he grades you on your improvement, so if you try hard enough you'll pass.
He will absolutely tear your papers up for the smallest of flaws, but he is a great teacher and makes the class extremely thought-provoking. He also grades on improvement which helps a ton, but requires a lot of work on papers. His syllabus says he docks points for not showing up to class, but he didn't do it anyways *shrug*.
this class was one of the most unsatisfying classes i have ever taken. the homework has nothing to do with the papers and i worked way too hard for a B-. he thinks he is being helpful but conferences are just more time for him to hear himself speak. the only good thing about this man is that he doesn't care about attendance. Stay away!
Very good spirited man with a genuine passion for literature. Extremely knowledgeable. Definately hard to follow at times. Class consists mostly of scattered-brained lectures and students trying desperately to keep up. No midterm or final. Just three papers and participation. So show up... If you dont mind his top two shirt buttons being undone.
Delancey is a pretty tough professor. You do a lot of intensive reading, but he attempts (key word... attempts) to be very helpful in explaining it. His papers are somewhat of a bear: This is no write the night before thing. He will tear them apart. I got a B+ by talking a lot in class and seeking advice for writing papers. He'll help you get an A.
Delancey is pretty easy, so long as you participate and write papers that sound smart. But he has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to literature. His confused, incoherent interpretations of the texts are a disservice to the authors. If you must take him, smile and nod, but don't actually listen to anything he says, because it's wrong.
Really nice guy, but confusing. His lectures usually consist of superfluous jargon and severe abuse of chalk diagrams, though most of the chalk ends up on his coat. Attempts class discussions, but it usually ends up in either complete silence or a lot of BS. Not as tough as a grader as he says. Claims to take attendance, but he didnt mark me off...
the smartest man possibly alive. I loved this class, not because I did so unbelivable in it and bc it was easy, but because of how smart he is. He got his undergrad from Yale and grad school at U Chgo... truly brilliant man, you get a LOT out of his class
he seems much more interested in proving how intelligent he is than actually explaining things to us. Uses the phrase to put things "in common sense terms" right before he starts making less sense than usual. Half the class dropped in the first week, I wish I had joined them.
This was suppose to be the entry level English class and we had one kid get a B+. I had a TA and prof grade my paper and he gave me a C+ on it. He is a brilliant but be ready to get a C. Drop or transfer!! If you are a girl you should try to seduce him
He means well. He really does. However, he also manages to make even the simplest concepts confusing. He condescendingly asked me to participate less in class, and I took his advice and stopped trying to help him explain things. He complains about his inefficient time management, and I feel like we all agreed with him. Best avoided, I think.
Delancy is fricken brilliant. If you do the reading he assigns and you particpate in class he'll love you. It was hard to understand him sometimes because the subject was new to me but I learned a lot as a freshman from him. My English class now feels like a breeze compared to his Criticism and Theory Class because of how hard his class was.
As the comments below say, DeLancey likes to hear himself talk. A lot. He's a hard grader, though it seems like his grading reflects less on the student's work and more on his desire to keep grades consistently low. I went into this class a strong writer looking to 'break the cycle' and get an A - it only barely happened. Good luck if you take him.
Genuinely interested in the material. Bright guy, but I don't think as hard as he's made out to be. complicates some things unnecessarily. Engaging. Not such a hard grader. diagrams make no sense. gets lost in his language. good prof. IF you are on the same page as him
Definitely a teacher for those of you paying for good education, not just easy As. His class, which primarily focused on argumentative writing, although tough, helped me tremendously. The hard work pays off when you realize he's taken your writing style and ability from high school to college level.
Brilliant. Arrogant. Pompous. Difficult. Vague. He will teach you how to dissect an author properly and he will attempt to teach you to write exactly as he sees fit. If you do not do so, you will get a c. He enjoys giving students bad grades at the beginning and then increasing their grade later in order to make himself feel like a good teacher.
As someone who got an A in this class, take my advice. DO NOT TAKE HIM. As excited as I was to take his class I did not appreciate nor understand his long-winded, nonsensical lecture style. I had to learn most of the material outside of class, because he was so incomprehensible. He's also a tough grader. I barely got an A, and I excel at writing.
Professor Delancey is a great teacher. When the semester started, I was completely lost because we jumped right into work. You will write a total of 4 papers, all arg and two arg research papers. Note: GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS FOR HELP WITH THE PAPERS! Makes a huge difference. He is one to embrace and a very interest and intelligent being!!
Remember how much money you are paying for your education; just trying to pick easy courses where you don't learn anything is a waste of your (parents') money. Mark Delancey will help you to see things like you never have before. His course is worth every penny. Instead of hearing people talk about how "superior" he is, try and learn something.
Do not recommend. The lectures have nothing to do with the papers that we write - it's sort of a waste of time to go to class. He told us before we got our first paper back that he will only give you an A if you have the writing quality to be a professional at that moment...
He has good intentions and wants you to improve your writing, but he uses a textbook that is now out-of-print and completely outdated, not to mention he rambles on at a level that isn't appropriate for freshmen. Don't get me wrong, I understood him, but you won't learn anything new. For an entry-level writing course, he has high expectations.
all i have to say is: why doesn't he have a chili yet?
the man is crazy...he rambles on an on about nothing, has nothing to do with the course and asks the most philosophical impossible questions....horrible, horrible teacher. VERBOSE!
If you cant understand, or see the value, in this guys lectures than your a prime example of how college has become too accessible. While not always crystal clear, lectures are substantial, interesting, and thought provoking. Delancy is an academic. If you want something neatly packaged, concrete, and job oriented then find a trade school.
Very nice guy, but near IMPOSSIBLE to understand at times. Speaks in giant, complex, and barely understandable logic circles, often repeats himself. Stereotypical single professor who wears tweed and says he enjoys relaxing at home with his intellectual glasses on, reading a novel and sipping cognac with a cigar. Hard grader!!! AVOID IF YOU CAN!!!
Very Hard. I dont think it is possible to get an A. I am a good writer and a good student and this class was horrible. AVOID. I learned a lot from him but it is not worth the suffering and the ridiculus arbitrary grades.
if you can avoid taking him do it. extremly hard grader. you learn a lot in his class if you can understand him. he talks in circles and is very hard to comprehend. but use his office hours if you take the time to understand the material he will take the time to make sure you understand it. no exams only papers but he grades them very hard.
Thought provoking, he talks in thesis statements. Grading is difficult but he uses grades to get you to put more effort into writing. worth taking.
Cool, intelligent dude. Someone I could easily see getting a beer with while listening to probably more than a handful of highly entertaining stories from him. He's kind of a rambler but if you're smart you'll catch on. Good for anyone whose literary appreciation extends beyond reading "catcher in the rye" for your high school english class.
This guy is really confusing when he lectures but he's a really easy grader. If you pay attention in class you'll do well but he can be really boring. Take his class though and you'll get a lot out of it. He's also easy to talk to and get help from. Really nice and smart and dont be afraid to be called on cuz he usually answers his own questions.
I don't know what grade I am getting in this class at the moment, and I don't care. If I had the opportunity to take this class with another professor and have a guaranteed A, I would still have choosen Delancey because I can actually say I had fun in this class, and more importantly i can say i learned to think.
Also, after reading some of the previous comments, my comment would seem to imply it is impossible to get an A. It isn't. It is very doable to get a B+ or A, but will take effort.
Let's be honest. NO one wants to take UCWR. But there are far better people to take it with. Professor Delancey is a complete drag and tries to sell his writing methods. Personally, his grading didn't make any sense on my papers and I've been told I write well. Try not to take him but if you have him, enjoy very longgg dryyy classes.
Best teacher at loyola. Hard class but he seriously is the smartest teacher I've had.
A great teacher! I learned a ton and was very interested in what he had to say.
DeLancey was by far my favorite professor of the semester. He is truly a wonderful man, interesting, and extremely intelligent. By the end of the semester I was able to analyze texts better than I ever had. Do as many as the writing assignments as you can to get a better grade.
A great teacher. Initially the work load is intimidating, but soon you find it isnt that bad. he analyzes everything extremely in depth, and he's extremeLy intelligent. Went to Yale for undergrad and received his doctorate in English at university of Chicago. I learned a LOT in his class. Everyone should learn what he has to offer
Very boring. Very dry. If you do not pay attention in class and glance at the chalkboard you will not have a clue as to what is going on (it's basically a bunch of circles connected at random points. If you have the chance...choose someone else.
Brilliant and happy to share his brillance if you'll do the work. Highly recommended
I got an A in his class. That said, this was the most useless class in the history of man. It was a WRITING class, but all the daily homework was reading Greek philosophy or 100 year old speeches. Everything we read he tied into religion according to him. Took one page of notes in 16 weeks because everything on the chalkboard was illegible.
He was very intimidating at first but I actually enjoyed it in the end. He grades on improvement which was weird but he cared a lot about his students and was always willing to help. If you see him after class he will basically outline your paper for you and tell you exactly what to do to get an A.
I dropped out of his class. The way he went over the texts was...really confusing and I had trouble understanding his concepts...he makes you read A LOT.
Potentially the best professor I've had in my academic career. He's brilliant and very helpful if you show an interest in getting a good grade. I've never looked forward to going to a class more than this one.
Take Dr. DeLancey! It is a lot of work because you do have a homework assignment every class, but he is a great man and very helpful when it comes to papers. You have to work for a good grade in the class, but his class is very enjoyable!
Don't take him, unless you are really good at interrupting relationships between not related things. He wants participation, no one participates, so he just tells you everything about the readings. As long as you come to class when he discusses any two of the books, you are able to write the 2 assigned papers. No other homework.
Students who value articulate, bright, caring and genuine professors, take Professor Delancey.
DeLancey's class was kind of intimidating at first since the writing method he teaches is kind of confusing as he just writes scribbles on the board, but it got easier as the semester went on. Although his class can get pretty boring, he is actually a nice guy and is helpful if needed.
I went from getting A's in AP English classes in a Nationally ranked high school to getting a B- in this class. Anyone who is dazzled by his "intelligence" is merely impressed by the use of big words. He talks in circles and literally comes to class without a clue about what he is talking about. He's a nice man, but he teaches Lit like philosophy.
Dull and mediocre at best. I don't think anyone learns writing by having the professor lecture and scribble all over the board. Comments on papers were useless.
Hands down the worst UCWR professor. Talks in circles and his writing is illegible. He's methods are very intimidating as well. He is a very smart man whose intelligence could be put to better use elsewhere
Really nice and helpful teacher. If you go to his office hours, he helps you basically write your paper for you. I barely read anything for class, and I still am doing fine. TAKE HIM, you wont regret it.
Loved this class. Professor Delancey is extremely cool and funny. He is one of my favorite teachers this year.
Delancey is very helpful with writing and grades based on your progression in the class. He also goes on some pretty awesome/funny tangents that actually trigger thought. Great professor to have for my first year in college.
There's no point in attending class or reading or listening or even caring. 3 essays in total about any author from the syllabus. 1 essay is "trial," so your grade is 2 essays and some participation. Avoid him! I love lit before this class, and now he's ruined the subject for me altogether.
He doesn't appreciate interpretations other than what follows his own. Grades you harshly for it and honestly he just blabs on and on in circles.
AVOID. he is a very smart and respectable man, however, he is not a good professor for an introductory writing course. he is very opinionated and rejects other interpretations. if you can try to find a different professor for UCWR
This class was terrible. His syllabus was WAAY off. It doesn't even have the right textbook needed for class, or the same schedule. He is very unclear about the homework. Trying to get in contact is very difficult!
Thought would be a blow-off as a core course, but it was actually my most stressful classes of the semester, and I took that my sophomore year! He's the prof that takes the most insignificant detail in a book and elaborates on it for an entire lecture, relating it to a similar word with the greek root of that, etc. Surprised about my grade still.
It's sad to see such a brilliant professor have such a low rating. Delancey changed the way I interepret literature and was willing to help me at every step along the way. If you want to grow as a human being, take his class. You will work for your grade, but that's how it should be. Loyola is lucky to have him.
I took Dr. DeLancey's class 24 years ago! You get what you deserve in his class! His class was amazing, I learned so much about myself and the world around me from class discussions! Thank you, Professor!
