Very boring, but you'll get a A for sure!
He's soooo hilarious! Very lively person until he starts to lecture. He doesn't really announciate words, so it's hard to follow sometimes. BUt he's great!
This teacher is so funny. If you have to take History take his class. You'll learn a lot and get an easy A. Plus you'll have so much fun. I wish all my teachers were like Prof. Dodge!!!!! (^_^)
doesn't take attendance, funny, easy class
easy, funny man (we call him Santa Claus)...easy to get A. almost e'one pass in the class...but sometimes boring
Really easy class. Isn't too much trouble to pass. Several group quizzes which made it even easier. Doesn't like tests (a good thing!) Kinda funny professor but odd at times.
A strange teacher no doubt. Don't bother listening to his lectures they have NOTHING to do with his tests (a simple compare and contrast essay)and you get questions beforehand. Not a pretty sight. Boring as hell. Easy as Macaroni.
Man, this guy is so funny. He's so jolly, and friendly. He does lecture quite a bit, but he doesn't like to grade tests so I only took one essay exam when we were supposed to have 2. But that was a good thing because I was getting an A in the class
a VERY INTERESTING CLASS .i RECOMMEND IT ..ONE of the open minded ppl.easy to pass his class ,easy to get an A (am a 3.8 student)
He is funny. He does not take note on the boad. It's kind of hard to follow in the beginning. He is very informative.
Doesn't really teach.
very cool teach!
AWESOME TEACHER! He jokes a lot and still happens to convey all the information so that u learn much about history. PCC needs to hire more teachers like him and not those that can't teach info. very well (all he gives is a midterm, term paper, & final)
horrible teacher!!! i can HONESTLY confess that i learned absolutely NOTHING!!! the term paper was entirely copy and paste with minor fixes. If i'm the dean, i know exactly who to fire!@@ hehe good luck
he bs too much.i learn absolutly nothing in his class.alot of ppl there just fall asleep or do their hw..can you imagine that? he talks all da way through his class,it'z hard to follow n understand n take notes cuz all he does is bust out a bunch of B
HOrrible teacher, cant or just doesnt teach/lecture, doesnt care about students, when ur absent and u miss handouts, ask him and he always brush u off and never gives them to u, the worst teacher i had at pcc
No Comments
I love this man, he may not do anything, but you can tell he really knows his stuff.
I had him at cal state.Terible teacher
Dodge is a funny man! His work is so easy I never read the book I just went to two museums wrote my essays on my experience and got an A. His midterm and final are easy questions that you can get from your notes! Homework coloring maps! Coloring okay!!!
All rite, i must admit he is a funny man, no doubt. But his lectures simply sucks. He just talk all the way while the students are doing their own things. (sleeping, day-dreaming) If he can change his teaching methods, i think he will be great. ^_^
Dodge is a sweet man who knows his history, although he may drift off sometimes he means well! You can learn ALOT if you set your mind to it, take his class if you want an understanding teacher who will cut you slack cause you're lazy.
He wasn't as easy as I expected. The most boring class I have ever taken.
This is the most interesting class! Alot of reading, but Professor Dogde knows his history!! Makes class fun with all his dumb jokes and antics. I learned alot. Not an easy class, do not take him if you want an easy "A"
Not easy.
Great Teacher! Very funny! Made History intresting and humorous. He let us form opinions of historical events. I recommend him for any History Class.
hard, hard multiple choice, no one in are class did better than 20/25 on them.
St. Nick sucks D*** Did not enjoy his class at all
he's wack
Nice guy, Good class, but full of students not interested in history. His tests are difficult but he grades on a MAJOR curve, an F is usually turned into an A.Alot of xtra credit and several field trips. Do the homework and classwork and dont worry about reading the book. just study the notes.easy A
History may not be a fun subject to learn for most people, but the way Dodge retells history makes you want to learn more. May look and act intimidating @ first, but don't let that fool you. Completely sarcastic at times, but definitely a funny New Zealander. Tip: Write ESSAYS for midterm/final.
i personally like history but not in his class! most boring luctures EVER! i shouldn't even call the luctures cuz they have nuthin to do wid history.the worse ever! dun believe me? take him and see wut happens.THE WORSE!!does not have a grading system.i passed all the tests got an F? wtf is that!
Santa!!! his butt crack will haunt me forever!....:( ...It's hard to tell if he's actually lecturing. reading is too much-impossible and is like 10 times his lectures. Zarate is way better...
Dodge is a very very good professor. His assignments are challenging yet not hard. He goes the extra mile to ensure you pass his class, and also has frequent movies shown during class. He's highly recommended if you want the same teacher for all your history classes.
Aright look people..I took the class cause of the comments on here...what are you people on? his scantron tests are uneblieveably hard, & his essay questions are ridiculous. he knows he can ask a question that his students will know but he chooses to ask questions he hardly lectured on. Weird..
Thank god I am at CSUF now! Anyway, this dude is - funny, boring, lazy, horny and cracks some dumb ass funny jokes. Oh and he eats ding dongs in front of everyone! Ask him about teaching naked history! PCC SUCKS!!!!
unfair grade, but easy to got c.
By far the worst teacher i've ever had. i recommend you guys take it with nebrida. you won't regret it.
OMG... whoever wrote that about the buttcrack, i feel you. He doesn't know HOW to pull up his pants, so i too am haunted by that nauseating image. Otherwise, he just blabs n blabs about the lecture and throws in his own comments/pictures that are really weird sometimes...
Blabs and blabs but does'nt say much.He is very boring and does'nt spell the names so you can't even research them for tests.Reminds me of a dumb abdominable snowman with droopy pants.Very unstructured. You'll wonder how after you did everything required you still got a bad grade.Unfair grading.
Good teacher, cracks jokes to make history more interesting. Is understanding about life getting in the way and will give extra time. I don't know where some of these negative comments are coming from.
i have nothing to say about this teacher that is positive, so i will say that you have to take history with eloy zarate... you wont regret it!
Nicest teacher in the world.Fair grading system. At least better than that psycho Zarate who is insane.Dodge will give you a nice surprise take him. Relaxed and easy going. Just bring your cup of starbucks to stay awake.
Pretty easy going atmosphere in the class, attendance isn't really required to pass it, as long as u do the reading on ur own, or study the essay portion. I dont know who this zarate is, but i know Mhunzi is the worst hist teacher ever. anyway, dodge is a pretty fair teacher, just stay on his good side and answer his questions if he picks on u.
comments listed are unfair he is a very interesting professor but make sure you show up he loves to drop people.
Not recommended. Unorganized. Confused. Chemically Enhanced Probably. I'd avoid this class if you take someone else. Mark Dodge shouldn't be a teacher unless he gets an assistant to help him "get it together."
Good teacher, but seems lazy. Yes, he is unorganized, but grades well. Hard to get extra credit if you have a job. Test are alright. Do not rely on him to go over everything. You have to study on your own. If you like group work, take his class. Overall, nice man, but hard to take seriously.
Funny and entertaining.Makes going to classs a breeze. His tests are ok. But this is college ok.I recommend him over Zarate who is arrogant, irritating and an obnoxious dwarf.Prof.Dodge is a better choice. At least he is not a dictator but an easy going teacher who gives you a pleasant learning enviroment which makes it easier to learn. Take Him.
If u are a history major, take his courses.Teaches from a "made for history majors" perspective.U will learn a lot. He also isnt a ethnic hating teacher like Zarate (his hate for white people is very clear). He is Funny and does not teach with an AGENDA as Zarate does. He gives U Info n lets U decide. Dodge rules Zarate Sucks.

If you need help, don't count on him. Let me tell you he is very grumpy and can really make stupid remarks about women. He rambles on and on and on about nothing and clearly talks about things that are not important to history.
I have to admit he's a little on the weird side, but that's what makes him interesting. He has a love affair with donuts. His comments about women were something I could have done without. Overall he's not too bad, he even prepared SOME lessons. hehe
easy.
AHAHAHAH i've never got an easier "A" in my life! take history of california (history8). all we do is go on field trips once a week on friday and write a one page, double spaced essay about the place we went to. AND THATS IT. NO JOKE!!! I HAVE 105%!! it's transferrable under IGETC; best history class i've ever taken, it's so chill. GG
I thought he was kind of hard. You have to study on your own a lot. He doesn't give much extra credit. You are definitely going to have to read on your own a lot if you want an A on the tests. He's a pretty cool guy, though.
He is a super funny guy...always made everyone laugh. He knows a lot about history and makes it fun. I recommend you to take him...easy A if u study and turn everything in on time. You could get a C if u dont do well on tests and turn in work late...so bottom line...he's pretty easy!
He was very boring. All he did was sit there and read the powerpoint slides. He doesn't do much class participation. The final and the midterm are worth half of your grade, which can be hard. He gives out the possible essay questions before hand, so that makes studying easier. He's very self-important, so it's hard to listen to him drone.
He's a very good teacher. He's very informative and gives an entertaining lecture. You do have to do a lot of reading on your own, but that's what's expected from you in college. Do your work and study for tests and you should do well in his class.
You'll have to be self-motivated to read the texts, but he gives you a lot of chances. I mean, the midterm and the final had three different forms for you to choose from: essay, mult choice, or short answer. You could at least get a C on one of them right?
never gives hw! only midterm and final exam. easy A if u study hard!
He's so nice when it comes to tests because you can choose which one you want to take essay, short answer, multiple choice. The teacher is very funny & he gets the class involved! I dont even like the subject but because of him I enjoyed it throughout winter. I didnt study much and got a C!!
Me and my friend took Dodge for California history. Easiest damn class....ever! Loved the field trips to ghetto parts of LA. Our grade was just to go on the frickin field trip! Main advice: pick the essay for the test...he won't fail you. If you pick multiple choice, you're screwed. Me and my friend did essays, always 20+ or better, out of 25. LOL!
take his class! its so easy!
it might be an easy class to get B, but if you want to get an A-(guranteed, if you are a good writer even though you dont study), its quite a different story. He has an aura of self-importantce, and seems to be nice but gets easily annoyed if you approach him. This semester he gave a lot of group and off-campus projects, also quite a different sty
he is so easy. try to write for more than 4 pages in both midterm and final. guarentee A. Dont Take the Frigging MC, U WILL BE SCREW!
History of middle east, DO NOT take unless you REALLY have too. unless you know an abundance about the subject you learn from the start of the middle east to current events but trust me. Not unless you have too dont take this one. as far as attendance goes, i always left early and managed to study and get a B in the class. Stay low and in the back
History 16 is not for people who need structure, but I've gotta say that the class was always very interesting. Reading the books helps a lot to keep up with the discussions.
This is the best class ever!!! This professor always makes jokes to keep the class entertained!!! And he's very laid-back, what kind of professor listens to his iPod? I recommend taking this class, and choose the essay for midterm and final!!! It's way easier than doing a multiple choice or short answer!!! Take this professor, or you'll miss out!!!
Dodge is a unique professor. Rough around the edges though. He peeks your interest. If you want to distract him, ask him about the "goat story!"
well what can i say bout dodge. his lectures r basically all on powerpoint so all u have to do is copy them. briefly read the books.his midterms & final r essays. just as long as u write like 4-6 pages youll be fine. and besides he lets you copy notes on your blue book for 5 min prior 2 the tests. hes weird, and sometimes funny
This class is SO wacky. Don't take it if you can't handle disorganization. Dodge is very nice. I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you don't already have knowledge of the Middle East, as background given is not thorough. I attended every class and did all homework, and I received a C. I rarely did the reading because it wasn't discussed.
this class is so stupid, it'll make you stupid!
very easy professor! only midterms and finals make up the grade. choose the essay and make sure to write more than four pages. does lectures through powerpoint and the stories he tells are interesting. he speaks in a sarcastic manner, so don't feel offended.
Highly recommended. If drinking in class is your thing, or texting your friends, Dodge is the teacher to take. No homework, only a midterm and final, and if you beg and complain, he'll let you take both home to complete them. Shows a lot of videos in class and shows lots of sarcasm. All his classes are easy A's, so you can't go wrong!
Disorganized, immature, unprofessional. Demeaning & disrespectful toward students who are really interested. Despite having a Ph.D., has obviously never studied the subject of "teaching". Slumps in his chair, staring at the floor, delivering a series of monotone lectures. Exhibits a juvenile social veneer while masking a cynicism and apathy....
Mostly story time, some discussions and movies. The information is of little use outside the classroom. For those inclined to writing or can make strong arguments that are backed up, chose the essay on the tests to get a good grade.
talks randomly into space about stuff not even in the book. talks a lot about homosexuals in history, and other stuff not relevant to the class. tests are easy - just write 8 or more pages to get an A.
prepare to be bored out of your mind. buying the text book is a waste i haven't look at it once and im 2 % shy of an A. Darn. snooze duringthe whole sem and study the essay topic. excruciate details and make sure 2 write more than 4 pgs
nice person...lots of interesting stories .powerpoints are not clear..boring...read the book a lot...helps more than you can imagine...what was said about the essays are not true...quality over quantity
This teacher writes his rating on this page!!! FXXK
The BEST professor at Pasadena City College you can get for History that makes life so easy for you. He let you eat and drink in class everyday while he lecture. Breaks are reasonable. Little homework. Easy class to pass for sure unless you do nothing. Show up in class, do the test and participate and you will pass 99.9 percent.
FUN FUN FUN. This guy is funny as hell and cool. lets you make up late work, you go on field trips practically every week!!!!! that means no class!!! you go to Santa barbara, san diego, different museums and just report on what you saw and did, thats it!!!! easy class and chill too. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
This guy is a strait up scam artist. He is as far from a teacher as i have ever seen. He cheats students out of an education and a worth while class. I'm being completely serious when i say that i think this guy just uses this job as a scam to collect a paycheck for doing little to no work at all. this was the most worthless class i have ever h
This class is weird. You go to a field trip every week then write a 1 pg paper on a topic relating to the trip. You will be in class only 3 times the semester and you will either watch a movie or listen to him talk the whole period. Anyways the trips range from somewhat boring to extremely fun. Go find some travel buddies for this class!
Good class. Good professor! He shows great movies in class and makes the info interesting. You can snack in class! Hes very lenient if you have good reason and understanding. Midterm, final & paper. He likes class participation as well and makes you think outside the box!
Not a helpful teacher.
This class was easy and fun. All we had to do was go on field trips and write short essays. The lectures are boring but you won't have to do a lot of reading for this class. It's a breeze.
This class is a joke! If you care about learning anything do not take this class. It can be an easy A but it is also a bit of an inconvenience.
Most Hilarious class ever taken in my life. field trip every week and 1 term paper. overall it's a fun traveling class but really can't learned much. the only thing I don't like is that I can never figure out his grading standard. but hopefully i ended up with an A.
It might seem like an easy A but be careful. He didn't have much clarity but no one cared because everyone thought they were going to get As. Do every paper and try to be at every trip,, I was and I got a B.. yeah
Easiest teacher iv ever had, chill, all you have to do is watch videos and color maps, tests and quizzes are pretty much easy, you will catch on to the material fast.
worst professor ever! not helpful at all. if you ask him any questions he will just blow you off. not clear in describing assignments. most boring trips. its not even worth taking his class. extremely rude!
Dodge is the SHIZ, the way the class is designed is theres a trip with the exception of 3 class meetings I kept track of all the expenses, it came to 143, and i would estimate an extra 50 for traveling expenses The trips are really cool especially S.D. and S.B. CourseopenedmyeyesEasyA THANKSDODGE=)
The lectures were incredibly boring as were most of his field trips. He is not very clear when it comes to the assignments and is somewhat moody, but then again I would be too if I hadn't "gotten some" in decades. Overall an easy class, most kids either received an A or a B with a few scattered C's.
i am shocked to read the reviews here. he took me to places i have been and i learned more about them. actually considering attending some of the field trips again because he invited us to do so. i HATE history and i got a b in the classwithout taking the final cause my best friend died. and he did not know that. super easy super funnclass.
Mr. Dodge was an excellent class conductor. He really knows his stuff and keeps everyone involved. He turned what could have been endless reading and memorizing of dates into a relevant, and hands on learning experience!
This is perhaps the best class at PCC, ever. Dodge is an old badass, and he has a sense of humor. We went on field trips every week and he tried to get us discounts on every ticket we ever bought. This is way better than sitting in class and memorizing a bunch of useless crap. Get a life and get out there.
cool teacher, field trips every week and having a blast, but there's one thing that bothered me greatly. I did every assignment and put in lots of effort into them but received a C after attending every field trip. My friend who missed out on the last mandatory field trip and didn't do the final essay received a B, so this class is a wild card.
Most boring class. EVER. Class requires 3 books..that will bore you to death. Read them if you suffer from insomnia. Funny guy, but fails to engage all students in subject. Easy A, but super boring.
I took this class in Spring 2012 thanks to the "Spring Forward" sessions offered at PCC. Class itself is only a little bit difficult, and it is mainly because it took place during ten Saturdays with five hours per Saturday. -_- Anyways, I did not learn much in this class, but then again I'm not a history person. Way easier than my AP U.S. teacher
I took him for summer and he hated me for coming in late. So be on time! Other than that, Dodge is awesome. His quick lecture about racial stereotypes was eye-opening. Teachers that can inspire students to produce good in society should always be admired. Oh, and the video project was fun!
This professor makes an interesting subject boring. But at least consumption of alcohol in his class makes the time go by quickly. You could probably smoke and Dodge wouldn't notice. His grades are a crapshoot - I wrote a kicka$$ paper and got a C on it, but another paper that was total crap got a B+. What the hell? YMMV with Dodge.
Professor Dodge is a nice person, I'd meet him for coffee, but avoid his class. He doesn't want to be there anymore, and it shows. He seems checked out, apathetic, and unwilling to engage beyond a script he wrote for himself a long time ago. Not in control of his class and doesn't care. I got an A, but I would never study with him again.
This class is a field trip class. Don't take classes before and after this class because you go to LA and Santa Barbara and you have to either miss those classes or his class, but you can only miss two class and still get an ok grade, but its better if you go to all of them. You meet in class once a month and it is so boring, but the trips are fun.
Mark Dodge is the most humorous and most sarcastic professor at pcc. He "uses" the book for his lectures. If you skip class you're not screwed, because he gives a brief study guide, before the tests. His tests have the option for either answering 1 of 5 essay questions or 25 multiple choice questions. Very little to no homework. MUST TAKE!
Dodge does not actually teach, he just reads word for word aloud directly from the outline from behind his desk in a monotone voice for 3 hours. Horrible and painstaking waste of my time!
TERRIBLE teacher! Opinionated, bitter, disrespectful and he has been known to grade your "subjective" assignments harshly if he does not like you. He makes very clear when he does not like you and why. If you want to learn about History of the Middle East, you will have to do so despite his confrontational & offensive behaviors and comments.
I do not understand all of these bad ratings. He was a funny teacher and one of the best. He gave three test which were pretty easy He gives 6 maps and group discussions. One presentation.
Read the book, color the maps, take the tests. Its that easy. Dodge is dope.
Reading, coloring, and listening to lectures. Class is simple but this guy is at least 70 so he is hard of hearing and boring to listen to. He does not censor what he says, nor does he care if it offends anyone. His grading scale is unknown and random. It seems like he gives you whatever grade he feels like.
He was overall a very funny professor yet he would often voice his opinion during a lecture, and not seem to care if it really offended anyone. Within the 6 weeks there, I didn't really learn much. Have to read the textbooks he assigned in order to know anything that's on the test. It was an ok class to take for summer session.
Professor Dodge is a nice man, but not someone I'd want to take a history class from. My main problem with the class is that it was verrrrry unstructured and wasn't straightforward at all. If he feels like you're genuinely trying, he'll be willing to help you, but the grading criteria was very very unclear, as was what to study for tests.
This guy has me laughing sometimes. Love the way he teaches history. He even invited students to come to Paris with him. He has maps to color and lots of reading to do. His exams seem a lot harder than what's expected but just study and everything will be fine. I won't forget his lectures and his jokes. Love teachers like him.
DO NOT TAKE MIDDLE EAST HISTORY WITH DODGE! His tests are extremely unclear and it is almost IMPOSSIBLE TO PASS! Over half of the class had to drop this class by the fourth week, and the readings were overwhelming. He does not have any structure as to what may be on the exams, and doesnt care. EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to get an A or B in this class.
I genuinely tried to work with Dodge and enjoy this class. Cites John Dewey as an inspiration for his teaching style, but doesn't actually pose any challenging/thought-provoking questions. Prefers to rattle off names/dates/facts. Quiz questions are often vague or misleading. Feedback is useless. Might be mindblowing if you're still a teenager.
Great class, Dr Dodge doesnt put unnecessary pressures or stress on his students, and has a very dry yet hilarious sense of humor. 3 Exams, make sure to choose the essay and write A LOT, even if its jibberish. Odds are that if you write a lot, he'll simply flip through the pages and give you an A without reading your essay. He's Lazy but Easy
Your grade is composed of maps (3), exams (3), and a museum paper. Getting a B in the class is very easy, but getting an A in the class is a little harder. Just do all the maps, listen to the lectures, and read the readings. Always choose the essay over the multiple choice exam because the essay is slightly easier. Reading the text is important.
Very good and nice professor. I took him for history 1A. He gives study guide which is helpful for test. By the way, his class is the most comfortable I have taken.
I took him over the summer as an online class. There weren't a lot of quizzes and tests so if you didn't take them or if you didn't do well on them it would tank your grade. Super flexible with time and easy to talk to though.
Dr. Dodge essentially co-taught this course at McMaster in the fall term, to this day he's one of my favorite professors/TA's. His feedback is genuine and you can tell he cares a lot about his students and their learning. I LOVED attending his sections and he even helped me outside of class time with essays and writing (offered to every student).
