Lawrence Morgan says Dotson doesn't know anything, he is right!
Did not learn anything!
Fun professor. Very personable and easy-going. Easy grader.
Smart and entertaining guy! Learned nothing!!
I had Dotson in Grand Rapids for both Torts classes. He is a great teacher - easy going, helpful, and a genuine nice guy. I felt like I learned a lot, so for you other people - put away the cell phone games and computer solitare.
incoherent
I thought he was pretty entertaining. He explained things well, but you had to tie it together on your own in the end.
He is incoherent and disjointed. I learned absolutely nothing from Mr. Dotson. Only at Cooley could an instructor like this get tenure. Mr. Dotson pales in caparison to professors teaching the subject matter. A real shame.
He is the most amazing professor I've had thus far at Cooley. His explanations are coherent and consistent with his teaching style. I would switch into his class if you can.
Dotson what are you saying???
Makes class interesting but doesn't go into great detail with a lot of the information due to all his stories and pep talks. great guy though.
He doesn't get to the point, he dances around the law and the issue but doesn't come right out and say it which is annoying. Other than that he's a great guy.
Dotson's a fun professor. But, he's a bit unprofessonional (he wore a fleece running suit to class one morning), is all over the place in his teaching (we hardly followed the assigned readings or the book), and his testing was on his own methods ("Dotson jurisdiction"), not what was read in the book. Recommended, but with caution: don't underestima
Professor Dotson is entertaining in class, but struggles to convey the material. Very frustrating when students ask legitimate questions and he does not answer them. Isn't that what professors are getting paid for?
don't listen to the ratings below. Dotson is more than qualified to be teaching torts 2, he does an amazing job and is so open to helping students. i bet the people who **** would have done better if they weren't screwing around on the internet the whole class. YAY DOTSON!!!
Dotson is one smart dude, and highly experienced. He knows the subject matter very well, but his organization can be lacking. However, he teaches what you need to know for the exam. Show up and pay attention and you'll be fine.

Guess what Dotson? Bringing a pizza the last day of class will not help you get a good evaluation. Horrible teacher. Our Torts 2 final consisted of him cutting and pasting the wrong set of questions to a fact pattern. And products liability, don't even get me started. His answer for everything in that topic - what does 402 A say? Plus, he is very unprofessional.
Great professor. He doesn't spoon-feed you the answers, but he's interested in helping you learn & teaching you to "think like a lawyer." I learned more from him about how to think than other teachers. He also gives you a really good idea of what to expect on the exam & if you give a reasoned answer, you should do fine.
You have got to be kidding Cooley. This professor does the Bill Clinton "I feel your pain thing very well" but what I paid for was law school. What a charade of a law professor. I don't care if the teacher cares - I wanted at least a little bit of law in class.
He's a great lecturer but he is very unprofessional and grades a little to harsh for his lax teaching style.
His lectures were disjointed and did not make any sense and doesn't like to answer your questions. He says he doesn't want to spoon feed the law but I learned the least out of his class. Most people memorized his final exam packet. He likes to answer his cellphone during class and is too lax in class but I guess I would to if I was on tenure.
doesnt break the material down at all. focuses heavily on public policy, but ends up rambling. professionally lacking.
Worst teacher ever. Avoid like the plague. Lectures are incomprehensible. Midly intelligent. Fake. Backstabbing. Malicious. Exam covered material of little importance. Needs to retire.
This guy is horrid
probably the worst prof i've had at cooley. grades like a beast, doesn't flesh out the material at all.
This guy likes his own law, not the majority so good luck on the bar!! He likes to flirt with the girls. His lecture is more discussion, don't need to brief cuz he'll never call on people. Just memorize the test packet f/ the final, only write down the rules, etc he says in lecture not anything else cuz test is mostly products liability& defamat
Teaches different material to different sections, but makes an incredible effort to make sure students understand, but makes things more difficult than they need to be.
dont listen to anything he tells you except the page numbers on the syllabus. memorize the exam pack.
Run, run, as fast as you can away from Prof. Dotson's classes. I can't figue out how he got to be a professor, let alone the dean of the torts department. He sure likes to speak of other people and pass judgement. But law is what law student need in class.
Wow... where to begin? First, I will admit he is fairly entertaining to listen to in class. But, his grading is out-of-this-world harsh. Definitely the oddest professor I've had so far.
Dotson is a great Prof. His lectures are some of the best in law school. He doesn't make you read any dissents, notes, or comments in the text either. He goes over what you need to know in class. Must learn the law the way he teaches it though which means effective note taking in class, no outside supplements required. Told us what would be on exam.
Spring 06 (B) He wants detail. He tells you what to know. Example: MUST know rational- ie why court follows a particular doctrine. If you know WHY youll be good. If he offers a Q&A go to it. He gives pep talks, if you think you think you are too good for a pep talk he will get on your nerves. I like pep talks. MEMORIZE EXAM PACK
A lot of people were frustrated with his lax teaching style and his refusal to answer questions. The bottom line is I have retained more info from him than any other professor at Cooley. He mostly pissed off people that wanted the material spoon-fed to them. His exam was fair and there were no surprises, I would take him again.
His teaching style may be laid back but he still makes you learn the material. His exam was awesome. no long essays just pure short answers. no surprises either. if you ask him a question in class, he wont gice you an answer it but will guide you to the answer. Best prof I've had so far.
this guy has no business teaching law...he is a nice enough guy, but beware
Good Prof. He answers questions, but his style is different then most. He challanges you to answer questions on your own through reasoning, as he knows that most questions aren't looking for answers but rather assurances. Pay attention in class. His intent is to teach you how to argue, not teach you what is right and wrong. Arguing is lawyering.
Kinda has his own version of the law, very helpful, fun, and exam is what he says it will be
Great professor, just pay attention in class and you shouldn't have a problem. Very nice guy and helpful. Answers questions in class (in a roundabout way) He even tries to answer questions from students who clearly don't have a clue.
Without a doubt one of the BEST PROFESSORS I HAVE EVER HAD!
At first he seems like a really great guy. Then around week 10 or so he starts to play little games with you when you ask questions. So, when it's getting near finals, don't expect him to give you straight answers on anything you ask--just hope you have good notes and go to the TA sessions-they are somewhat helpful.
Awesome professor!!! Don't be lazy, and remember to use common sense. As he says, "it is what it is." Don't try to make new law, just go by what he says. Do your work, pay attention, use some common sense, and you will do fine. Nice, plesant, down-to-eath professor!! We need more like him!
Very straight forward essays. Take your time on the test and you should be fine. I blew thru mine in 1 and 1/2 hours and got a B.
I got a B, my lowest so far, in his class... Loved the prof as an interesting person but couldn't stand the fact that its been the only law school class so far where I had no idea what he was asking for on the exam. That's because he makes up his own law for you to use in "Dotson's Jurisdiction".
Dotson is a BAD teacher. Period. He talks a lot and even tells u very interesting things, but they are barely related to the subject. Our entire class did not know what to expect on the final, which, btw, looked OK at first glance. Ultimately, he failed or gave Ds to MANY students. Would not recommend taking this prof.
Wow, he reminds me of my Uncle named Tom. He claims that if you have a problem you should come to him, but he is a product of the machine that is Cooley. Good lookin' out bro.
EXTREMELY FAIR EXAM. The essays were basically knowing the law and making your argument what which is law is all about! He's very good at explaining the law but I think some students cannot see the big picture and want everything handed to them which is why they don't like him.
Don't know how anybody could not like this man. Maybe he has lightened up a bit since some of you had him, but he is the absolute man. Made class interesting. Showed tv shows. Had QnA every week, and pretty much let us know what we had to know for the final. Which was very straightforward. I will take Prof D for any class I could.
I did not mind him as a professor, but for a school that is supposed to be teaching me how to pass the bar exam why is he stuck on a Restatement that was rewritten in 1997? He tries to be as helpful as possible, but let's face it Torts II is not that interesting to begin with and I would rather get out of class early then watch TV.
Pretty much full of himself. Thinks he's so cool that he creates his own rules for Products Liability; If you want to know the right rules for Torts that will help u pass the Bar take someone else instead.
Basically what everyone is saying about him is correct. There were times during the semester that I wanted to stand up on the table in class and scream "Dotson, wtf are you trying to tell me?" Made me almost suffer a nervous breakdown and then in the end I get an A in his class. So take this for what it's worth.
Great Guy. Horrible Prof. Period.
The guy is entertaining, but is of little help when you ask him questions. Asking him questions is akin to pulling teeth, and ultimately it's so frustrating that you forget what you originally asked. Very little form to how he teaches, and he teaches his own law rather than what is on the books. Avoid this guy at all costs if possible
Steer clear from Dotson for Equities & Remedies! I took him for Torts II & he was pretty good - but he has no idea what he's talking about for Equities. It was like he was speaking a foreign language or just making up the course as he went along.
very engaging in the beginning - like the real world examples (his past cases). Had a hard time understanding him toward the end of the semester...got to the point where all I was hearing was "blah blah blah" - could have something to do with my lack of interest in the subject (unfortunately, the class is required)
Very liberal professor. Always wants the plaintiff to win regardless of what the law says. Very high on himself and at times he just rambles, not a great professor but the tests are fairly easy if you know what he wants.
Had him for I&II. Doesn't really call on ppl, great guy, but a little hard to follow. Get the outlines and clarify any questions you have! Even if you have to ask 5 times before you get an answer do it. He is so smart it's sometimes hard for him to come down to student's level, but he is willing to put in the work and cares about students!
Good. does not call on anyone unless no one raises their hand. Will meet with you to explain anything. Gives great "life lessons" if you will.
Very disorganized, never gives straight answer.
great class, I don't know how he is getting so lowly rated by some of the individuals below (other than if you get a bad grade you are more prone to flame here). every question I had he answered, he covered everything on the test in class, and after it was all said and done I had a pretty strong grasp on torts.
Good grade in the class, but this Prof does not know how to give straight/clear response to questions that are asked.
This professor is not very competent. He is distracted, hard to follow, and believes he has his 'own version' of the law (not sure what the Bar thinks about that!)He made some major errors in the final exam questions (typos and other problems) which created a great deal of confusion. Anyone who has info about this same problem please post....
He is his biggest fan. Dotson loves to tell of people he knew when he was a practicing attorney (e.g., Johnnie Cochran). While teaching, he will go off on a tangent. In the end, his students need to find the relevant information in what he says and be prepared for the wildest Final they will ever take (e.g., typos and vaguely worded questions).
this is the worst teacher ive had in law school. horrible!!

Best Professor at Cooley - hands down. Students do not understand that in the real world the law is not "black and white," it is grey. If the law was black and white, there would be no need for lawyers! Make your argument - that's what lawyers do.
he keeps it real.
If find him a little arrogant and impolite at times. However, he is a good professor overall. The reason his class is confusing is because a few students constantly ask the most ridiculous questions which confuse everybody. His final is fair. I studied hard, but did get an A in the course.
Brilliant, challenging, entertaining and approachable. He is the consummate professor and advisor. No, he's not easy, and yes, he is not above making a fool look like a fool. Very passionate and knowledgeable, extremely fair exam. Take him. You'll be a better lawyer because of him.
This prof thinks we are in court for every class. This is not a litigation class but he tries to make it one. He also doesn't use plain english so it makes it difficult to learn the material. He takes simple concepts and makes them more difficult than they are. I do not suggest this prof to anyone.
Last term in law school and I the worst prof ever! He does not know how to speak nor write clearly. Read the portal's exam questions and you'll wonder how did he pass law school. If you try to listen to lecture, you will be confused. He used words (during class) that make absolutely no sense.
Very unhelpful professor. But makes you try to acquire the mentality of an attorney. So never offers a direct answer to any of your questions. He expects you to answer your own questions. But exam is easy, and hes a fair grader. Know Negligence.
I am somewhat baffled by the negative comments being made about Prof. Dotson. He was my Prof. in both Torts 1 and Torts 2, and he knows his stuff. I would not be surprised if those who are making those outrageous claims about Prof. Dotson are just disgruntled students who got low grades.
As a student who performed well in Torts, I?m not at all surprised by the negative comments regarding Prof. Dotson. He?s a great guy, but near the end of the semester his lectures became incomprehensible. Take Prof. Palmer!
Prof is engaging in class, very challenging, and truly makes you think on your feet. He is a bit intimidating to some, but I found that having his instruction has enhanced my legal education. Be prepared to think, listen, learn, & absorb. If you can take his course, do so! You will not be sorry! If you "know the law" you will do well!
Very kind man! He's a BOSS!!
Early on he doesn't give out much material aside from reading the book; by the end it all falls into place. His background would excuse him if he chose to be arrogant, but he's actually very approachable and is a great guy who truly wants his students to succeed. He gets you to think like a lawyer, and I appreciated his sense of humor too.
Great professor. Really gets you to think like a lawyer. Tests are good and very argumentative, just what is needed. Should get him if possible.
You don't need to read the cases to get by in his class. Just know the issue and the rule. He talks a lot and never calls on anyone. You'll never get a straight answer when you ask a question so just don't ask. He's entertaining and funny but you will be lost. His past exams are your friend but don't dare ask for feedback.
Nice guy but horrible professor. Not a fair grader at all, try to avoid.
Initially he makes you feel like an idiot and you dont belong. You soon come to realize that what he is saying is common sense. KNOW THE LAW. the LAW is like your Social Security number.. it doesnt change, you just apply it in different circumstances. Over time I came to like Dotson, he is informative but I prefer him out of the class setting.
Dotson is fairly entertaining in class. He goes off topic way too much for anyone to understand anything. He likes to hear himself talk I think. He is rather harsh and makes you feel like an idiot when you ask a question which makes a lot of students shut down and not ask questions.
Dotson is truly a nice person. Dotson as a professor though? NEGATIVE. I went to law school to learn, not to teach myself. And I understand that I have to put in the work, but at least teach me something, ANYTHING. He just talks and tells stories ... there's rarely anything concrete coming from him. If you plan on passing, teach yourself.
Dotson is a genius. Knowing the text matters, but he will only talk about its application. At first it seems incredibly hard for a 1L course, but you just have to get past that and figure out what he is trying to teach you. Meet with him every chance you get.
Dotson is very misunderstood. He wants everyone to be successful. However, he teaches in an unorthodox way. Most professors lecture and expect you to memorize every concept and rule. Dotson talks you and your classmates through each topic to help you actually understand. Stick with it. He's very smart and cares about your future career.
Having Professor Dotson as an instructor was a game changer for my law school career. He taught us how to effectively and efficiently read cases in order to determine how the law was applied so that we could do the same in subsequent readings and fact patterns. Take him if you want to do law school and not just attend law school.
Professor Dotson is personable and helpful to talk to one-on-one. In class, he spends a lot of time talking about administrative material and how material should be approached rather than the actual content. You will not get a straight answer or a complete thought if you ask a question. Don't bother.
The lectures are engaging and the professor breaks down complex topics well. Using resources like the textbook and unstuck AI helps study effectively for this class.
