Really laid back and understanding. He's not so demanding on the homework but it will eventually count against your grade if it goes undone.

loved this teacher.my favorite at sjsu thus far.very lenient.very helpful.unlike many classes, his is interactive.in other words, he believes in class discussions instead of just standing there lecturing.the more you participate, the more you will get out of the class.easy class but you still learn at the same time.it's a college student's dream.

Great teacher, and is really helpful if you talk to him. He's really lenient on due dates and homework; there's a two week grace period for each assignment (although he abandoned that and made it so that you had to have everything turned in by the last day). He has a good sense of humor, so I had a fun time writing for his class.

Easy. He's really lenient on hw! You don't have to show up on most days if you don't want to-only he stresses you attend on important due days (seeing as he gave us a schedule). You can tell he loves English very much, so he's a bit nerdy. He appreciates all the input he gets & doesn't get upset.

took dowdy's class for engl 1a and it turned out to be alright. the essays were pretty hard for me but if you do your work it is an easy B. a little more effort on the essays can get you an A. he is very helpful and available to students if they need help.

Great and awesome teacher! Loves to engage with the class and is extremely helpful. An interesting character he is indeed and hilarious. Flexible with turning in late assignments. Grading may be a little tough, but is fair. If you are concerned about your grade or falling behind he takes the time for one-on-one conferences which was very helpful.

Easy teacher. He doesn't mind late work as long as you give him a heads up. He makes sure you pass his class. Even though there is a lot of essays to write, he doesn't grade that hard. He just cares a lot about grammar. Sometimes his class is boring, but he is a funny guy. nerdy but its cool.

Pretty good professor. Grades quite hard on grammar though. If your content is good but you have a lot of grammar errors, down goes your grade. I wouldn't say there's a lot of work in this class; it's manageable. You'll learn some interesting techniques in this class though.

Professor Dowdy is excellent! He clarified the instructions precisely and helped me understand them. His teaching methods in Engl 1A class are very clear. I would definitely recommend him as the best.

LOVE THE TEACHER, one of my favorites of all time. Very easy going and very flexible. Tests and essays are also a breeze if you pay attention and do the required reading. I enjoyed the class very much. There was alot of response questions after each reading, kind of time consuming but not too bad. TAKE THE CLASS.

I hate morning classes, I didn't show up to many classes. BUT, Professor Dowdy is very understandable, easy teacher, people say he grades hard on grammar, and to be honest, I get A/B/B- papers without proof reading, and I hate English. I would recommend this class. Bad thing is no cell phones, so you have to hide it when you're texting.

He was a great teacher. Always there if you needed help with your essays. He grades a little hard on grammar, but overall he is a good teacher. His class is boring , but he tries to find ways to make it fun

Definitely show up on group review days. Easy class to pass but if you want an A you have to really deserve it. Meaning, actually put some thorough thoughts in your essays. He's really lenient on due dates but things can get messy. Just show up and stay on task.

Dr. Dowdy has to be my favorite professor so far. He's always there to help, and really cares about his students. He wants all of his students to succeed If you ask for an extension on your final drafts, he'll happily allow it. I wish all my other professors were like him! I'm actually really bummed out I won't have him as a professor anymore.

Really Nice Professor. Always cares about student success. We had 4 take home essays, a take home final, and couple of in class reading quizzes that we could retake online if we did badly. We had a Group presentation at the end. Too bad he isn't teaching ENGL 2, would have loved to have him again. Take his class if you can!

Really wants everyone to learn. He tries to relate and make class interesting/fun by bringing in topics for our age group. Gives good feedback, not much hw. He really cares and answers any questions. I took an Intro to Shakespeare so the class was hard by nature so you really need to put work into it. The professor was chill, will give you extensions on papers if you need one. Overall warm, nice guy. I think he curved our grades too because some people didn't study at all but still received a passing grade.

An overall easy class. Most of your grade is based on Essays which he does kinda grade pretty harsh, but he grades them fairly.

Really respectful of students lives outside of school. He understands that life happens and tries to work around that. Great character with a strong passion have students leave better than where they started

Awesome professor. I highly recommend to take him. Very respected to all of his students, and loves to help his students whatever they need like they struggle on an assignment. Its a lot of work because its a 100W class. But youll be fine. Participation is 20% and writing assignments are 80%. Also, theres news quizzes every week.

He's the nicest professor I've had so far. I would love to have him in my other classes. He does his best to give feedback as long as you communicate with him over any concerns or questions, he'll help out. It saddens me that my class did not participate as he was always friendly and tried to make the lecture fun.

By the end of the semester before the final in-class essay and final essay, I have over 100% in the class. Show up to class because he gives participation every day, he will also recognize your hard work. I was worried about how you had to be "flawless" but as long as you try and FIX your essay with his feedback, he grades your IMPROVEMENT. :)

Mark was extremely nice and helpful. I think anyone taking Engl1A should have him as a professor if possible. He was really nice and interesting, and fun to talk to. He graded very fair and would be honest with you about your work. With that being said, the workload was very easy. I am glad I took him in my first semester of college.

Mr. Dowdy it very nice person and he really cares about his students. He does give out work but you honestly get to do it in class with your classmates or by yourself and the class work isnt even a lot. His class is fairly easy and he does offer a lot of extra credit. I would definitely take his class again.

Really cool and lenient, he cares more about you turning in the work rather than just missing the assignments, he was really understanding and pushed the deadlines a lot. He sometimes requires you to attend for the debates but theyre easy points if you show up to them.

Professor is very understanding and caring and always gives his best effort when teaching. Make sure to attend class regularly because a lot of participation points are given during class. There are quite a few papers but he gives very good feedback on them and you can usually get a good score if you revise your paper accordingly.

Most assignments were very easy, and Professor Dowdy gave great feedback on essays. The topics covered in class sometimes felt a bit meandering and sometimes irrelevant, but were still generally interesting. Tons of extra credit opportunities for completing additional assignments or participating. Only met once per week, mostly asynchronous.

Professor Dowdy took time to care for his students. He was completely understanding of the unique situation we are under and was willing to accommodate each and every student. A great professor, wish I could take his class again.

Prof Dowdy was very understanding with the current situation. I personally sent every assignment late and was given full credit. There are 3-4 major writing assignments in which he was very great at give feedback about what he wanted to improve the grade from RD to FD. I highly recommend Prof Dowdy when taking Eng1A.

Incredible professor! There are 3 major essays that make up 75% of your grade. Most classes are simply small and easy activities that prepare you and let you understand what he is expecting in the essays . The essays are lengthy but the grading criteria is crystal clear, he gives good feedback, and grades generously. He is really nice and easygoing

One of the best professors that I have taken this semester! Simply the best! All you need to do is listen attentively in his class and complete your assignments on time. I'd highly recommend prof. Dowdy for English 2 because he's truly passionate about teaching and cares for students. There are 2-3 major essays and other assignments requiring group work were often completed during class so participation/attendance is important. He's more than happy to help outside of class so don't hesitate to reach out!

The assignments were all relevant to the essays. We had 3 essays, no tests, no final, and rare reading quizzes. We had to work with others in breakout groups, but the assignments aren't hard.

Reading is NOT NEEDED to pass the class. He won't care if you read or not. There are hw questions regarding reading, but you can bs them easily. Reading 50% of the hw. 3 essays, 1 writing portfolio (final). He gets nitpicky when grading essays IMO. writing portfolio felt like graded on completion. He is very helpful, fair, and teaches well.

Everybody who puts a negative writing is just lazy and not ready for university. This class is straightforward and the professor is extremely caring and doesn't demand too much from you. I work as well and I never fell behind in his class.

This class was easy. There were many small assignments graded on completion which were tedious to do but helped boost your grade. There were 4 writing assignments that he graded leniently. He gives good and specific feedback on assignments if you ask for it before turning it in but otherwise, he doesn't teach much. He gives credit for late work.

Professor Dowdy is a super caring and friendly teacher that is passionate about teaching his students. There is a lot of little extra credit opportunities in class activities so take that as an advantage! Attendance is not necessarily mandatory but it is highly recommended so you do not need to makeup the in class activities.

3 main papers plus a reflection at the end, those are the main grades and he grades extremely generously. There are some readings you'll have to do, but it's possible to get by with just Sparknotes or skimming any text he gives. He has us play games to study different texts, and he's overall very fun. He gives extensions whenever needed on papers.

Prof. Dowdy's 1B was easier than I thought it would be compared to my 1A! Highly flexible and made class fun with various in class activities. Extra credit available for participation, and also two papers and a final reflection with flexibility took some stress off me. Recommend for taking 1A and 1B/2 however Packback means online participation.

My GOAT!! Not too much extra credit, but it is easy to receive. Weekly assignments are due on Packback at the end of each week. Two essays which are graded upon completion and revision from the previous drafts. An absolute character passionate about helping students and being accessible to them.

I don't enjoy english classes, but this was enjoyable + manageable. 3 essays (split to 2 drafts, 1 final draft across weeks), 3 small group presentations, and easy assignments during class. Professor Dowdy is super kind and funny and allows extensions of you ask. Classes were always super fun and entertaining to come to. The class had an overarching theme of music so we were able to write essays on what ever music related topics we wanted such as K-pop controversies to AI in music. Only 2 essays and 1 book. Really easy and fun class.

Dowdy is very approachable and active outside of class hours. One exam, not difficult if you have been following the book readings in class. Essays we did built off of each other. He provides great feedback before we work on final drafts. There were a few group presentations. In class you will have to work with classmates.

the way the class is organized, curriculum and physical classroom wise, u feel like ur back in middle school, but nothing wrong with that. Very nice guy, enjoys english, a few small group presentations. its an english course so obv an essay here n there.. his high rating compared to other professors is very justified. easy class if u js do the work

Very nice guy and he gave extra credit one time for people who attended class during a heatwave. His lectures are interactive and attendance is mandatory to complete the assignments which are sometimes groupwork. The assignments are a little long but fun activties. He gives reviews and the review is the test just the questions are reorganized.

Prof. Dowdy is the best professor I've had in my short year and a half at SJSU. He is such a chill guy. I remember showing up to class when only 7 or 8 people would show up and simply because we made it there, we would get some extra credit. He also gave me a 1-week extension so I could work on my essay over spring break. Didn't even need an excuse

Although attendance isn't mandatory, I would still show up he puts a lot of effort into his work. Super understanding and nice. We did about 3 essays throughout the course and he always provided great feedback.
